Search

Can art make a difference? This is a call for a new sense of interconnectivity among visual art programs in and out of schools. This common ground will be found in the embodiment of performance, critical reflection, and social change within art learning. One goal of this article is to encourage educators to use the "verbs of art" for building curriculum investigations that integrate social change and community engagement. The cite/sight/site of our critique is centered on an after-school art program for refugee children. Two focal questions: Can performance help art educators become more-effective leaders in community development? Will the study of performance enhance our commitment to active inquiry and social learning? (Contains 5 figures and 3 endnotes.)

En el presente texto se problematiza sobre la noción de desarrollo sostenible como expresión (oficial) que revela la continuidad histórica de una forma de organización social y de un régimen de producción insostenibles, basados en la explotación de la naturaleza y el trabajo humano, así como en la adecuación de las instituciones sociales y de las expresiones culturales a las demandas del régimen de producción y la sociedad de mercado que materializan el poder de grupos y corporaciones. Se entiende como el resultado de un proceso histórico y una forma de civilización impuesta a los pueblos del mundo, vía la colonización evangelizadora, la dominación política y el exterminio cultural; un nuevo credo y evangelio que revestidos de racionalidad se impusieron con fuerza colonizadora a través de los discursos del progreso y desarrollo y se difundieron por el mundo para producir lo contrario: subdesarrollo. Esta revisión se orientó en el objetivo de rastrear en sus expresiones discursivas (léase oficiales) viejos preceptos que, asentados sobre novedosas adjetivaciones, mantienen intacto el algoritmo del paradigma hegemónico occidental eurocéntrico: progreso à evolución à crecimiento à desarrollo. Del análisis realizado, se desprende la insostenibilidad del desarrollo sostenible en su filiación de origen al crecimiento económico, al reconocer límites ecológicos al crecimiento material y a la naturaleza como fuente de recursos y vertedero de deshechos, al confrontar las dimensiones de la sostenibilidad ecológica y social como contradictorias, en tanto avances en la sostenibilidad ecológica acarrean afectaciones en la sostenibilidad social, en fin de cuentas, la insostenibilidad del desarrollo sostenible es la expresión de la imposibilidad física de la continuidad de la civilización del desarrollo (moderna) basada en el crecimiento económico y material y de sus formas de producción y reproducción de la vida social.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo fazer uma reflexão acerca da abordagem da história e cultura afro-brasileiras na Base Nacional Comum Curricular do Ensino Médio à luz da Lei nº 10.639/03. Para tal, foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica calcada no exame de artigos acadêmicos, livros, documentos, leis e normas oficiais que incidem nas formulações de políticas, planos e sistemas educativos. Os estudos demonstraram que as abordagens referentes ao ensino da história e cultura afro-brasileira nas áreas de Ciências Humanas e Sociais Aplicadas e Linguagens e suas Tecnologias não contemplam os anseios da sociedade em relação à educação antirracista; problematizações acerca das questões estruturais e institucionais que são bases para uma cultura racista não estão presentes no documento; as questões raciais são abordadas de modo amplo e universal que privilegia o conhecimento da cultura ocidental eurocêntrica e desconsidera as especificidades de outras culturas.

Purpose – The puropose of this study is to analyze the functioning of the triple helix interaction in Minas Gerais, through the case study of the Minas Gerais State Research Support Foundation (Fapemig). Design/methodology/approach – The information was collected from the Activity Reports published by Fapemig. Quantitative methods were used for structural analysis and data tabulation of the researched and qualitative programs for a procedural and documentary analysis of projects promoted by Fapemig between the years 2009 and 2018. Findings – The Fapemig showed itself to be a fundamental agent for innovation and the development of interactions between the state, universities and companies in Minas Gerais, through the creation of programs, offered in public notices, financing them and creating a space of consensus among the agents. Originality/value – There is few research on triple helix interaction for the state of Minas Gerais; most research on this topic is concentrated in some regions of the country, and the present work contributes to fill this research gap, besides demonstrating, in a case study, applications of recent and still little-explored concepts of the literature on triple helix.

El presente trabajo tiene como propósito aborda la descripción de la gestión estratégica como un factor clave para la gestión organizacional. Metodológicamente es de tipo bibliográfica-documental con una ventana de observación de literatura de diez años (2011-2020) en bases de datos iberoamericanas como REDID, SCIELO, DOAJ, CLASE y REDALYC. Los planteamientos realizados llevan a la reflexión de que la planificación estratégica es una herramienta de gestión que permite a los gerentes reconocer las prioridades de la empresa y determinar las principales acciones necesarias para realizar la misión y los objetivos de la organización. Así, se aprecia que los componentes que constituyen la gestión estratégica son la estructura organizacional, la cultura de gestión, la implementación de la misión y visión, la implantación de la planificación estratégica, y la dirección basada en estrategias. En la actualidad, el dinamismo en el entorno empresarial hace de la gestión estratégica una herramienta primordial en la efectiva gestión de las organizaciones y ese dinamismo requiere del conocimiento y comprensión del entorno para establecer las barreras que la empresa enfrentaría y así determinar la misión y los objetivos de la organización que permitan implementar estrategias, para lo cual la planificación estratégica y la gestión estratégica son de gran valía.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to evaluate the occurrence of loss of sensitivity of the inferior alveolar nerve, and to monitor the remission of this change in patients with mandibular fractures subjected to surgical treatment. Methods: patients with mandibular fractures, surgically treated within one year, were prospectively evaluated. Data regarding etiology, fracture location, type and displacement, and surgical access, were obtained. The tactile and thermal tests were applied at eighteen points in the mental region, within a period of six months. Statistical tests were applied to compare the categories of variables and the period of observation (p ≤ 0.050). Results: during the study, 37 patients were included. There were 24 bilateral and 13 unilateral fractures. Sensory changes occurred in 56.8% of the patients in the preoperative period, in 83.8% of the patients, in the postoperative period, and 35.1% of the patients presented complete remission during the final period of the study. Conclusion: sensory changes occurred in about half of the patients, due to the fracture, increasing greatly in the postoperative period, with complete remission in about one third of the cases. The fracture type, degree of displacement and surgical access type influenced the occurrence of sensory alterations.

En el artículo se propone una metodología de enseñanza-aprendizaje, basada en la vinculación de la teoría con la práctica, y su aplicación como técnica didáctica en la asignatura Topografía, la cual forma parte del pensus académico de la carrera Ingeniería Civil de la Universidad de Guayaquil. La finalidad de esta estrategia es que el estudiante desarrolle sus habilidades de razonamiento y juicio crítico que les permitan enfrentarse a los desafíos en el aula de clases. En la investigación de la que se deriva el artículo se planteó un problema práctico de la vida real, relacionado con una vía de acceso a un recinto de la provincia del Guayas.

El en artículo se describe una metodología de enseñanza-aprendizaje basada en problemas y su aplicación como técnica didáctica en la asignatura de Topografía. Esta estrategia posibilita que el estudiante desarrolle habilidades de razonamiento y juicio crítico que les permitan enfrentarse a los desafíos profesionales. Para lograrlo, hemos procedido a la aplicación de conocimientos en un problema de la vida real: el estudio y la construcción de dos pasos peatonales, como alternativa para el descongestionamiento del tráfico vehicular y peatonal de la avenida Delta, mediante el uso de herramientas topográficas, teniendo en cuenta los diferentes esquemas de señalización.

El artículo se centra en la importancia que tiene la enseñanza-aprendizaje de la trigonometría en la aplicación de los cálculos topográficos en carreteras o vías de acceso. El estudio se realizó con los alumnos del segundo semestre de la carrera Ingeniería Civil de la universidad de Guayaquil, con el propósito de determinar los conocimientos adquiridos en la asignatura de Geometría, específicamente los relacionados con la trigonometría, para evaluar dicho conocimiento en los contenidos teórico-prácticos de la signatura de Topografía y los proyectos de titulación. Para ello se trabajó con un problema práctico de la vida real, relacionado con el cálculo topográfico del trazo y diseño geométrico de una carretera o vía de acceso, dicho estudio fue realizado en el recinto denominado camino vecinal Palo Alto del cantón Daule.

Genomic selection (GS) has successfully been used in plant breeding to improve selection efficiency and reduce breeding time and cost. However, there has not been a study to evaluate GS prediction models that may be used for predicting cotton breeding lines across multiple environments. In this study, we evaluated the performance of Bayes Ridge Regression, BayesA, BayesB, BayesC and Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces regression models. We then extended the single-site GS model to accommodate genotype × environment interaction (G×E) in order to assess the merits of multi- over single-environment models in a practical breeding and selection context in cotton, a crop for which this has not previously been evaluated. Our study was based on a population of 215 upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) breeding lines which were evaluated for fiber length and strength at multiple locations in Australia and genotyped with 13,330 single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers. BayesB, which assumes unique variance for each marker and a proportion of markers to have large effects, while most other markers have zero effect, was the preferred model. GS accuracy for fiber length based on a single-site model varied across sites, ranging from 0.27 to 0.77 (mean = 0.38), while that of fiber strength ranged from 0.19 to 0.58 (mean = 0.35) using randomly selected sub-populations as the training population. Prediction accuracies from the M×E model were higher than those for single-site and across-site models, with an average accuracy of 0.71 and 0.59 for fiber length and strength, respectively. The use of the M×E model could therefore identify which breeding lines have effects that are stable across environments and which ones are responsible for G×E and so reduce the amount of phenotypic screening required in cotton breeding programs to identify adaptable genotypes.

ABSTRACT Objective: Globally, more than 1.2 million people die from traffic accidents each year. In order to reduce the rate of traffic accidents and their subsequent social consequences in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the aim of this study was to characterize pedestrian victims of traffic accidents and occurrences. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive and retrospective epidemiological study of 2723 pedestrians injured in traffic accidents during 2016 in Sao Paulo. Results: Of the total sample, 37.3% participants were female and 62.7% male; incidence was highest in the 10-19 year old age group (19.9%) and lower limb injuries were most frequent (28.6%). Of the cases attended in urgent health care units, 75.6% progressed to hospital discharge. Accidents were more frequent in the afternoon (44.6%), and most commonly involved cars (47.2%). Conclusions: This study showed the importance of making detailed records of traffic accidents to guide the government in intensive education efforts to develop a healthy society and respect for traffic regulations, to promote urban improvements involving signage and pavement, and to maintain pre-hospital and hospital care teams in strategic locations to minimize the time elapsed between the accident and care provided to the victim. The article focuses on the inclusion of performance art in the context of art education. The author proposes that art education is well suited for performance-based exploration of the so-called sociality of education. He believes that a performance work conducted by a student that results in overtly queer articulations of personal experience within the art classroom ultimately leads to the process of self-evaluation. He describes learning as a process of coping with the uncertainty of perception and feelings of estrangement.

Actualmente el cloud computing, representa un poderoso aliado tecnológico para muchas organizaciones; Todos los usuarios informáticos actualmente tienen acceso es este tipo de servicios. Este servicio está apoyado en la utilización externa de sistemas informáticos y puede ofrecer infinidad funciones a través del Internet, reduciendo enormemente la utilización de dispositivos de almacenamiento físicos y reemplazarlos por virtuales. Esto sumado a un nuevo concepto en el manejo de los datos, un término llamado “BIG DATA” ha llevado a las empresas a un cambio de lo cuantitativo a lo cualitativo, inicialmente se aplicaba este término en la astronomía y genética, pero en la actualidad esto se está llevando hacia todos los ámbitos de la actividad del ser humano. El objetivo general de este trabajo es explicar cómo las empresas del Ecuador a través de la implementación y utilización del cloud computing y el Big Data pueden incrementar su productividad.

Se estudió la vegetación de los bosques de Polylepis incarum (Bitter) M. Kessler & Schmidt-Lebuhn en el anexo de Lamparaquen, en la provincia de Lampa, departamento de Puno en los años 2009 y 2014. Se determinaron 83 especies vasculares pertenecientes a 35 familias. En cuanto a las formas de vida, dominan las herbáceas, gramíneas, arbustos y árboles, siendo en su mayoría, nativas e endémicas, algunas introducidas. Se identificó el ecosistema queñoal representado por la nueva unidad fitosociológica Lupino chlorolepis-Polylepidetum incari con cuatro subasociaciones respectivamente. La composición florística demuestra una riqueza moderada-alta de especies, siendo las familias con mayor representatividad, Asteraceae, Poaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Fabaceae y Pteridaceae. Se aplicó el método fitosociológico de Braun-Blanquet para el análisis de unidades vegetativas. Se presenta la clasificación de comunidades mediante el software TWINSPAN, el análisis de ordinación DCA con el software CANOCO 4.5 y un dendrograma basado en correlación de especies para cada cuadrante efectuado con el software PC-ORD. Mayores estudios son aún necesarios para tener una visión más amplia de las comunidades de plantas en otras zonas geográficas, y evaluar como la vegetación puede verse afectadas con el cambio climático y acciones antrópicas.

In this study we evaluated the floristic composition and changes in stored biomass and dynamics over time in 9 permanent plots monitored by RAINFOR (Amazon Forest Inventory Network) and located in the lowland Amazon rainforest of the Tambopata National Reserve. Data were acquired in the field using the standardized methodology of RAINFOR. The biomass was estimated using the equation for tropical moist forests of Chave et al. (2005). Biomass dynamics were analyzed, in three separated periods from 2003 to 2011. 64 families, 219 genera and 531 species were recorded. The tree floristic composition is very similar in all plots except for one swamp plot, although but it is also evident that two slightly different forest communities exist in the rest of landscape, apparently related to the age of the ancient river terraces in the area. Mortality and recruitment of individuals averaged 2.12 ± 0.52% and 1.92 ± 0.49%, respectively. The turnover rate is 2.02% per year. Aboveground biomass stored in these forests averages 296.2 ± 33.9 t ha-1. The biomass dynamics show a total net gain of 1.96, 1.69 and –1.23 t ha-1 for period respectively. Prior to the drought of 2010 a change in biomass was found 1.88 t ha-1 yr-1 and post drought was -0.18 t ha-1 yr-1 on average, though the difference is not significant. Demographic analysis suggests a dynamic equilibrium in the plots. The negative balance of biomass observed for the period 2008 – 2011 may be due to the drought of 2010, in which half of the monitored plots experienced negative net biomass change due to mortality of individuals selectively affecting the floristic composition.

El propósito de este estudio es analizar la radio comunitaria como estrategia de comunicación en comunidades como la de Isla de Dios, en Recife, Brasil, cuya principal actividad económica es la pesca. El análisis parte de la recepción de la Radio Comunitaria Boca da Ihla por parte de los moradores de la isla con el propósito de entender las apropiaciones que los pescadores -hombres y mujeres- hacen de la emisora local y comprender el significado que esa población le da a los mensajes en su vida cotidiana. En el estudio se discuten distintas posibilidades de uso de la radio comunitaria en proyectos de extensión pesquera para fomentar el desarrollo local.

The biogeographical relationships between far-separated populations, in particular, those in the mainland and islands, remain unclear for widespread species in eastern Asia where the current distribution of plants was greatly influenced by the Quaternary climate. Deciduous Oriental oak (Quercus variabilis) is one of the most widely distributed species in eastern Asia. In this study, leaf material of 528 Q. variabilis trees from 50 populations across the whole distribution (Mainland China, Korea Peninsular as well as Japan, Zhoushan and Taiwan Islands) was collected, and three cpDNA intergenic spacer fragments were sequenced using universal primers. A total of 26 haplotypes were detected, and it showed a weak phylogeographical structure in eastern Asia populations at species level, however, in the central-eastern region of Mainland China, the populations had more haplotypes than those in other regions, with a significant phylogeographical structure (N(ST= )0.751> G(ST= )0.690, P

Se presenta un caso de fibrosarcoma retroperitoneal en un lactante de 8 meses, que se manifestó clinicamente por tumor abdominal de rápido crecimiento. El tratamiento consistió en cirugía, quimio y radioterapia, a pesar de lo cual el tumor recidivó localmente comprometiendo funciones vitales que llevaron a la muerte. El interés de esta presentación radica en la rareza de este tumor, en especial en esta topografía, asi como la discusión de las medidas terapéuticas empleadas.

The State of Tennessee granted appropriations to an urban university in the West Tennessee region to address the needs of at-risk African refugee children and families who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Action oriented research efforts were conducted to address the needs of youth in the local region by developing, implementing, and evaluating a community-based intervention that was not only trauma responsive but culturally competent. The Trauma Healing Club was a treatment package developed and researched for this purpose and offered in an after school support program. This identified intervention utilized an existing evidence-based trauma intervention framework that was adapted to include more culturally responsive processes such as pyramid mentoring and African drumming. This work aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an integrated trauma-informed practice model for community-based programming and the effectiveness of adapting an existing intervention to better fit the community needs. Objective: To comprehensively assess family characteristics of adolescents with severe obesity and whether family factors impact weight loss outcomes following weight loss surgery (WLS)., Methods: Multisite prospective data from 138 adolescents undergoing WLS and primary caregivers (adolescent: M age  = 16.9; M BMI = 51.5 kg/m 2 ; caregiver: M age  = 44.5; 93% female) and 83 nonsurgical comparators (NSComp: adolescent: M age  = 16.1; M BMI = 46.9 kg/m 2 ; caregiver: M age  = 43.9; 94% female) were collected using standardized measures at presurgery/baseline and at 1 and 2 years., Results: The majority (77.3%) of caregivers had obesity, with rates of caregiver WLS significantly higher in the WLS (23.8%) versus NSComp group (3.7%, P < 0.001). Family dysfunction was prevalent (≈1 in every two to three families), with rates higher for NSComp than the WLS group. For the WLS group, preoperative family factors (i.e., caregiver BMI or WLS history, dysfunction, social support) were not significant predictors of adolescent weight loss at 1 and 2 years postoperatively, although change in family functioning over time emerged as a significant correlate of percent weight loss., Conclusions: Rates of severe obesity in caregivers as well as family dysfunction were clinically noteworthy, although not related to adolescent weight loss success following WLS. The β-haemoglobinopathies, such as sickle cell disease and β-thalassaemia, are caused by mutations in the β-globin (HBB) gene and affect millions of people worldwide. Ex vivo gene correction in patient-derived haematopoietic stem cells followed by autologous transplantation could be used to cure β-haemoglobinopathies. Here we present a CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing system that combines Cas9 ribonucleoproteins and adeno-associated viral vector delivery of a homologous donor to achieve homologous recombination at the HBB gene in haematopoietic stem cells. Notably, we devise an enrichment model to purify a population of haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells with more than 90% targeted integration. We also show efficient correction of the Glu6Val mutation responsible for sickle cell disease by using patient-derived stem and progenitor cells that, after differentiation into erythrocytes, express adult β-globin (HbA) messenger RNA, which confirms intact transcriptional regulation of edited HBB alleles. Collectively, these preclinical studies outline a CRISPR-based methodology for targeting haematopoietic stem cells by homologous recombination at the HBB locus to advance the development of next-generation therapies for β-haemoglobinopathies.

Objective: The psychosocial health of adolescents with severe obesity (BMI ≥ 120% for age and gender) has only recently been the focus of empirical work., Methods: This multisite study-an ancillary to a prospective longitudinal observational study documenting health in adolescents having weight loss surgery (WLS)-presents preoperative/baseline data from 141 WLS adolescents and 83 nonsurgical comparisons (NSComps). Self-report data from adolescent and caregiver dyads characterize adolescent psychopathology and potential correlates., Results: One in three adolescents reported internalizing symptoms, and one in five endorsed externalizing symptoms in the clinical range. Generalized linear model analysis demonstrated that increased risk of psychopathology for adolescents with severe obesity was associated with family dysfunction, eating pathology, family composition, and seeking behavioral intervention (versus WLS), whereas better quality of life (QOL) was associated with lower psychopathology., Conclusions: While psychopathology rates are comparable to national samples, there is a subgroup of youth who present for behavioral weight loss services and are at greater risk for psychopathology relative to national adolescent base rates. The design of novel, functionalized semiquinone (SQ) ligands which combine structural rigidity and electron-withdrawing, electron-donating, and electroneutral substituents enables investigation of multiple structure-property relationships and building blocks for new materials, including components of sensors, switches, and molecular spintronics. Along these lines, we report the synthesis of several new SQ ligands containing fused heterocyclic ring systems. Using both electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations, we show how spin density is affected by the fused ring system substituents.
