The exceptional properties of high-grade graphene make it an ideal candidate for thermal dissipation and heat exchange in energy applications and nanofluid development. Here, we present a comprehensive study of few-layer graphene (FLG) nanofluids prepared in an industrial context. FLG nanofluids were synthesized through an ultrasound-assisted mechanical exfoliation process of graphite in water with a green solvent. This method produces FLG of high structural quality and stable nanofluids, as demonstrated by electron microscope, dynamic light scattering and ζeta potential analyses. Thermal conductivity measurements of FLG-based nanofluids were conducted in the temperature range of 283.15 K to 313.15 K, with FLG concentrations ranging from 0.005 to 0.200% in wt. The thermal conductivity of FLG nanofluids is up to 20% higher than water. The modeling of nanofluid thermal conductivity reveals that this enhancement is supported by the influence of the thermal resistance at the FLG interface, and the content, average dimensions and flatness of FLG sheets; this latter varying with the FLG concentration in the nanofluid. Additionally, the density and heat capacity of FLG suspensions were measured and compared with theoretical models, and the rheological behavior of FLG nanofluids was evaluated. This behavior is mainly Newtonian, with a weak 5% viscosity increase.

In this study, a 2D numerical analysis was conducted to investigate electro-thermo-capillary convection in a 2D enclosure filled with a dielectric fluid. The enclosure had a free top surface and was subjected to buoyancy and electrical forces. The study considered a strong unipolar injection of electric charge (C = 10), a mobility number (M = 10), and a Prandtl number (Pr = 10). Calculations were performed for various thermal Rayleigh numbers (Ra) ranging from 5000 to 50,000, Marangoni numbers (Ma) varying from −5000 to 5000 and electric Rayleigh numbers (T) ranging from 100 to 800. The coupled equations governing the electro-thermo-convection problem (Navier-Stokes, energy, charge density transport, and the Maxwell-Gauss equations) were established and solved numerically using the FVM. This study involved mathematical modelling of complex and coupled phenomena, considering viscous, thermal, thermocapillary, and electrical instabilities. The findings showed a significant improvement in heat transfer with higher electrical and thermal Rayleigh numbers. Furthermore, the control of different forces led to an increase in the Nusselt number. Specifically, the application of thermal forces resulted in a 70% increase, while the use of thermocapillary forces led to a remarkable 169% increase. Additionally, electrical forces resulted in an impressive 224% increase. Multi-parameter correlations were established to estimate the Nusselt number as a function of the Marangoni, thermal and electrical Rayleigh numbers.

This study explores the impact of an adiabatic obstacle on the symmetry of temperature, flow, and electric charge fields during electrohydrodynamic (EHD) natural convection. The configuration studied involves a square, differentially heated cavity with an adiabatic obstacle subjected to a destabilizing thermal gradient and a potential difference between horizontal walls. A numerical analysis was performed using the finite volume method combined with Patankar’s “blocked-off-regions” technique, employing an in-house FORTRAN code. The study covers a range of dimensionless electrical Rayleigh numbers (0 to 700) and thermal Rayleigh numbers (102 to 105), with various obstacle positions. Key findings indicate that while the obstacle reduces heat transfer, this can be counterbalanced by electric field effects, achieving up to 165% local heat transfer improvement and 100% average enhancement. Depending on the obstacle’s position and size, convective transfer can increase by 27% or decrease by 21%. The study introduces five multiparametric mathematical correlations for rapid Nusselt number determination, applicable to numerous engineering scenarios. This work uniquely combines passive (adiabatic obstacle) and active (electric field) techniques to control heat transfer, providing new insights into the flow behaviour and charge distribution in electro-thermo-hydrodynamic systems.

The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the effects of electrohydrodynamics (EHD) on coupled free convective thermocapillary flow. The study focuses on a free-surface cavity filled with a hybrid nanofluid (MWCTN- Fe3O4-thermal oil) and containing a hot rigid obstacle. An electric field is applied between the obstacle and the lower cavity wall to induce additional instabilities in this region. This technique aims to eliminate the dead zone typically present in traditional natural convection and is expected to greatly improve heat transfer efficiency. To achieve this objective, the equations governing the EHD phenomenon, as well as the equations defining the physicochemical properties of the hybrid nanofluid, are solved using the finite volume method (FVM) coupled with a blocked-off region procedure. A parametric study is conducted, involving the Marangoni number (surface tension), the thermal Rayleigh number (buoyancy force), the electrical Rayleigh number (electrical force), the nanoparticle concentration, the size and the position of the obstacle. It has been demonstrated that applying of an electric field to the convective-thermocapillary flow of the nanofluid (combining two enhancement techniques) significantly enhances heat transfer, resulting in a more than 230 % increase in the Nusselt number.

Application: Newly developed fluid called phase change materials (PCM) used to accumulate solar thermal energy. This paraffin-based fluid is mixed with hybrid nanoparticles composed of titanium dioxide “TiO2″ and copper oxide “CuO”. Using this fluid, we hope to improve the efficiency of industrial solar thermal installations. Purpose and Methodology: A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed using Ansys Fluent 19, coupled with a home code implemented in the C programming language as a “user-defined function”. Initially, the model was validated against experimental data, then a parametric study was conducted to investigate the impact of pure paraffin PCM and hybrid nanoparticles-paraffin PCM, as well as the effect of varying the mass fraction of nanoparticles and the heat transfer fluid flow rate. geometric parameters such as the number of fins installed in the storage tank were also considered during the analysis. Major findings: On the basis of the obtained results, it was found that the incorporation of paraffin phase change materials (PCMs) within a storage tank has the potential to significantly prolong the operational duration of solar systems. Additionally, hybrid nanoparticles at 1% concentration increased the average storage tank temperature by 8% and decreased the melting time by 13.29% compared to pure PCM.

Due to the rapid urbanization of many cities around the world, industrial manufacturing plants have been expanded quickly, leading to the discharge of large amounts of pollutants into the environment. Consequently, a significant deterioration in local air quality is recorded, representing a high health risk for the city's residents. In this context, the main objective of this work is to understand the dispersion of gas pollution in high-density urban environments, specifically the Hail region of Saudi Arabia. The simulations carried out with Ansys Fluent 19.0 were based on actual climatic conditions, with particular attention paid to accurately reproducing the exact topography of the study area. The main results concern the characterization of flow behavior and the dispersion of gas pollutants emitted by power plants. Several factors, including building geometry and wind speed, are examined. The study reveals that for a reference wind speed of more than 7 m/s, gaseous pollution exhibits a significant tendency to accumulate within buildings, resulting in significant concentrations.

This work aims to use a green, economical and efficient adsorbent to remove organic matter from Tunisian industrial wet phosphoric acid (WPA: 52% P2O5). For this purpose, a natural and abundant clay is extracted from the Douiret, Tataouine deposit in southern Tunisia. This clay is being tested for the first time as an adsorbent in WPA medium. The raw clay and purified clay are analysed using standard analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and BET methods. The results show that the raw clay is a mixture of illite and kaolinite, with other mineral impurities, mainly quartz. Organic matter adsorption tests show that the purified clay exhibits greater effectiveness than raw clay. The parametric study with purified clay indicates that temperature, contact time, and clay dosage strongly influence organic matter adsorption. The highest adsorption occurs at 60 °C after 50 min, reaching 56% with 8 g of purified clay per kg of WPA. Among several recognised models, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Sips isotherm model are the most suitable for modelling the experimental data. This study suggests that Douiret clay can be considered an effective, inexpensive and environmentally friendly adsorbent for eliminating organic matter in industrial phosphoric acid.

Research interest in nanotechnology is growing due to its diversified engineering and medical applications. Due to the importance of bioconvection in biotechnology and various biological systems, scientists have made significant contributions in the last ten years. The present study is focusing on the investigation of the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) bioconvective heat transfer of a Williamson nanofluid past an inclined moving plate embedded in a porous medium. The partial differential equations governing the considered configuration are established, then transformed into ordinary differential equations using suitable similarity transformations. The variables corresponding to the velocity, temperature, nanoparticle volume fraction, and density of motile micro-organisms along with their gradients, are computed using the bvp4c-MATLAB built-in numerical solver. Results showed the rising of the buoyancy ration parameter leads to an increase in the flow velocity. It has been also observed that the flow intensity becomes more important with an increase in the Weissenberg number, and the opposite occurs with an increase in the bioconvective Rayleigh number. As an effect of the Brownian motion, a random fluid particle’s motion is encountered.

A numerical investigation of a phase change material (PCM) energy storage tank working with carbon nanotube (CNT)–water nanofluid is performed. The study was conducted under actual climatic conditions of the Ha’il region (Saudi Arabia). Two configurations related to the absence or presence of conductive baffles are studied. The tank is filled by encapsulated paraffin wax as the PCM, and CNT–water nanofluid flows through the capsules. The main goal is to increase the temperature of the PCM to 70 °C in order to store the thermal energy, which can then be used during the night and cloudy weather. Numerical computations are made using the finite element method (FEM) based on actual measured weather conditions. Climate conditions were collected from a weather station located on the roof of the engineering college’s building at the University of Ha’il. The collected data served as input to the numerical model, and the simulations were performed for three months (December, March, and July). The solid CNT volume fraction range was (0 ≤ ϕ ≤ 0.05) and the nanofluid volume flow rate ranged was (0.5 L/min ≤ V ≤ 3 L/min). For both considered cases (with and without baffles), it was found that the use of CNT–nanofluid led to a reduction in the charging time and enhanced its performance. An increase in the volumetric flow rate was found to accelerate the melting process. The best performances of the storage tank occurred during July due to the highest solar irradiation. Furthermore, it was found that the use of baffles had no beneficial effects on the melting process.

Impacts of using double rotating cylinders and partly porous layers in the bifurcating channels on the hydro-thermal performance were numerically assessed. Hybrid nanoparticles were used in water and finite element method was selected as the solver. Effects of Reynolds number, rotational speeds of the cylinders and their locations in the bifurcating channels, porous layer sizes and nanoparticle solid volume fractions on the hydro-thermal performance features were explored. The contribution of different hot wall parts was changed with varying Reynolds number and rotational velocity of the cylinders. Depending upon the rotational direction of the cylinders, the vortex occurrence and size at the bifurcations change significantly. Heat transfer considering all hot walls rise with higher rotational speeds in both directions. The amount of improvement in the heat transfer rate becomes 25% and 19% with varying speeds of the cylinders as compared to motionless cylinders. The pressure coefficient reduces with increasing the second cylinder speed in clockwise direction and this is favorable for thermal performance since the heat transfer also increases. The overall impact of the varying horizontal locations of the cylinders on the heat transfer rate is slight. The separated zones at the branching depends on the porous layer sizes. The overall heat transfer behavior becomes opposite when varying the sizes of the porous layers in the horizontal and vertical channels. By using nanoparticles in the base fluid, 35.75% improvement in the heat transfer rate is achieved for vertical wall at Re = 350 while pressure drop coefficient rises by about 8.5%. The overall improvement in the heat transfer rate by using nanofluid is 26%. Owing to diverse use of bifurcating channels in thermal engineering from fuel cells to electronic cooling, the proposed methods of heat transfer enhancement techniques can be considered simultaneously for effective control the thermal performance of those systems.

Building energy consumption in hot arid climates is dominated by air conditioning use. Therefore, using passive cooling methods could reduce this demand, improve resource efficiency, and decrease carbon emissions. In this study, an innovative configuration of a passive downdraught evaporative cooling (PDEC) tower is investigated numerically. The governing equations are solved using the finite element method (FEM), and the effects of inlet velocity (0.5 m·s−1 ≤ uin ≤ 3 m·s−1) and temperature (35 °C ≤ Tin ≤ 45 °C) on the fluid structure, temperature field, and relative humidity are studied for three cases related to the position of the air outlet. The flow is considered as turbulent, and the building walls and the tower are assumed to be thermally well insulated. The PDEC tower is equipped with two vertical isotropic saturated porous layers. The results revealed that the inlet velocity and temperature play an essential role in the quality of the indoor temperature. In fact, the temperature can be reduced by about 7 degrees, and the relative humidity can be enhanced by 9% for lower inlet velocities.

The computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) models based on the steady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANSs) using the k−ω two-equation turbulence model are considered in order to estimate the wind flow distribution around buildings. The present investigation developed a micro-scale city model with building details for the Hail area (Saudi Arabia) using ANSYS FLUENT software. Based on data from the region’s meteorological stations, the effect of wind speed (from 2 to 8 m/s) and wind direction (north, east, west, and south) was simulated. This study allows us to identify areas without wind comfort such as the corner of the building and the zones between adjacent buildings, which make this zone not recommended for placement of restaurants, pedestrian passages, or gardens. Particular attention was also paid to the highest building (Hail Tower, 67 m) in order to estimate, along the tower height, the wind speed effect on the turbulence intensity, the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), the friction coefficient, and the dynamic pressure.

In this study, a 3D numerical study of free ventilated room equipped with a discrete heat source was performed using the Finite Volume Method (FVM). To ensure good ventilation, two parallel openings were created in the room. A suction opening was located at the bottom of the left wall and another opening was located at the top of the opposite wall; the heat source was placed at various positions in order to compare the heating efficiency. The effects of Rayleigh number (103 ≤ Ra ≤ 106) for six heater positions was studied. The results focus on the impact of these parameters on the particle trajectories, temperature fields and on the heat transfer inside the room. It was found that the position of the heater has a dramatic effect on the behavior and topography of the flow in the room. When the heat source was placed on the wall with the suction opening, two antagonistic behaviors were recorded: an improvement in heat transfer of about 31.6%, compared to the other positions, and a low Rayleigh number against 22% attenuation for high Ra values was noted.

Natural convection and entropy generation due to the heat transfer and fluid friction irreversibilities in a three-dimensional cubical cavity with partially heated and cooled vertical walls has been investigated numerically using the finite volume method. Four different arrangements of partially active vertical sidewalls of the cubical cavity are considered. Numerical calculations are carried out for Rayleigh numbers from (103 ≤ Ra ≤ 106), various locations of the partial heating and cooling vertical sidewalls, while the Prandtl number of air is considered constant as Pr=0.7) and the irreversibility coefficient is taken as (φ=10−4). The results explain that the total entropy generation rate increases when the Rayleigh number increases. While, the Bejan number decreases as the Rayleigh number increases. Also, it is found that the arrangements of heating and cooling regions have a significant effect on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of natural convection and entropy generation in a cubical cavity. The Middle-Middle arrangement produces higher values of average Nusselt numbers.

In the present work, the effect of magnetic field on double diffusive natural convection in a cubic cavity filled with a binary mixture is numerically studied using the finite volume method. Two vertical walls are maintained at different temperatures and concentrations. The study is focused on the determination of the entropy generation due to heat and mass transfer, fluid friction and magnetic effect. The influence of the magnetic field on the three-dimensional flow, temperature and concentration fields, entropy generation and heat and mass transfer are revealed. The main important result of this study is that the increase of Hartmann number damped the flow and homogenized the entropy generation distribution in the entire cavity.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between Lipid ratios and asymptomatic peripheral artery disease (aPAD) in type 1 diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed among 223 diabetics. Patients were segregated with aPAD when their ankle-brachial index (ABI) was abnormal (ABI ≤ 0.90, or ABI > 1.20). Patients were segregated into the following groups (patients with normal ABI vs. patients with arterial stiffness). The association between lipid ratios and aPAD was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analysis and the receiver operator characteristic curve. Results: Our study reported a slight preponderance of females (108 males vs. 115 females), with a mean age of 30.70±9.69 years and a diabetes duration of 11.13±8.95 years. The prevalence of arterial stiffness was 38.11%. TC/HDL-C ratio was a significant predictor for atherosclerosis with a sensitivity of 77.3%, specificity of 62.5%, and diagnostic accuracy of 0.758%.
