Abstract

A research program with the aim of investigating the spin dependence of the three-nucleon continuum in pd collisions at intermediate energies was carried out at IUCF using the Polarized INternal Target EXperiments (PINTEX) facility. In the elastic scattering experiment at 135 and 200 MeV proton beam energies a total of 15 independent spin observables were obtained. The breakup experiment was done with a vector and tensor polarized deuteron beam of 270 MeV and an internal polarized hydrogen gas target. We developed a novel technique for the analysis of the breakup observables, the sampling method. The new approach takes into account acceptance and non-uniformities of detection efficiencies and is suitable for any kinematically complete experiment with three particles in the final state., Comment: Contribution to the 19th European Few-Body Conference, Groningen Aug. 23-27, 2004

2. Spin correlations in $\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pn\pi^{+}$ pion production near threshold

Abstract

A first measurement of longitudinal as well as transverse spin correlation coefficients for the reaction $\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pn\pi^+$ was made using a polarized proton target and a polarized proton beam. We report kinematically complete measurements for this reaction at 325, 350, 375 and 400 MeV beam energy. The spin correlation coefficients $A_{xx}+A_{yy}, A_{xx}-A_{yy}, A_{zz}, A_{xz},$ and the analyzing power $A_{y},$ as well as angular distributions for $\sigma(\theta_{\pi})$ and the polarization observables $A_{ij}(\theta_{\pi})$ were extracted. Partial wave cross sections for dominant transition channels were obtained from a partial wave analysis that included the transitions with final state angular momenta of $l\leq 1$. The measurements of the ${\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pn\pi^{+}}$ polarization observables are compared with the predictions from the J\"ulich meson exchange model. The agreement is very good at 325 MeV, but it deteriorates increasingly for the higher energies. At all energies agreement with the model is better than for the reaction ${\vec{p}\vec{p}\to pp\pi^{0}}$., Comment: Preprint, 21 pp, submitted to Phys. Rev. C. Abstract

We have measured three axial polarization observables in (d) over right arrow(p) over right arrow breakup with a polarized 270 MeV deuteron beam on a polarized proton target. Axial observables are zero by parity conservation in elastic scattering but can be easily observed in the breakup channel at the present energy. Based on a symmetry argument, the sensitivity of these observables to the three-nucleon force might be enhanced. Calculations without three-nucleon force are in fair agreement with our measurement, indicating that the expected sensitivity of axial observables to the three-nucleon force is not confirmed. Including a three-nucleon force in the calculation does not improve the agreement with the data.

Abstract

Physical review letters 74(4), 502 - 505 (1995). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.74.502, We report measurements of spin correlations and analyzing powers in He3(p, 2p) and He3(p, pn) quasielastic scattering as a function of momentum transfer and missing momentum at 197 MeV using a polarized internal target at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility Cooler Ring. At sufficiently high momentum transfer we find He3(p, pn) spin observables are in good agreement with free p-n scattering observables, and therefore that He3 can serve as a good polarized neutron target. The extracted polarizations of nucleons in He3 at low missing momentum are consistent with Faddeev calculations. © 1995 The American Physical Society., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Abstract

We have measured the longitudinal analyzing power A(z) of the pp --> pp pi(0) reaction at 375 MeV bombarding energy.
