1. Grey and harbor seals in France (mainland and Saint-Pierre et Miquelon): microbial communities and identification of a microbial source tracking seal marker.

Abstract

Introduction: Seals, protected wild marine mammals, are widely found in waters around the world. However, rising concerns about their increasing numbers in some areas have led to potential worries regarding microbiological contamination of coastal areas by their feces, which could impact bathing and shellfish-harvesting activities. To the best of our knowledge, no study has been conducted on the bacterial and RNA viral communities present in the feces of both grey and harbor seals, which are the two main seal species observed in mainland France and overseas. Methods: Fecal bacterial (n = 132) and RNA viral (n = 40) communities of seals were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon high-throughput sequencing and viral RNA sequencing methods, respectively. In addition, to identify the specific characteristics of seal fecal microbial communities compared to other animal fecal microbial communities that may also contaminate coastal areas, the bacterial communities of seals were compared to those of wild waterbirds and breeding animals (i.e., cattle and pigs) which could be present in upstream catchments of coastal areas. Finally, ANCOM was used to identify unique and seal-associated Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs), aiming to develop a Microbial Source Tracking (MST) bacterial qPCR marker associated with seals. Results and discussion: The bacterial communities of grey and harbor seals were not found to be significantly different and were characterized by a predominance of Firmicutes, including the genera Clostridium sensu stricto 1 and Peptoclostridium , followed by Fusobacteriota with the genus Fusobacterium , and Bacteroidota with the genus Bacteroides. However, variations in bacterial communities between sites and individuals were observed. Similar observations were made for the RNA viral communities being characterized by a predominance of Picobirnaviridae (44% of total reads) and Astroviridae (15%). This study successfully developed a sensitive (89.8%) and specific (97.1%) MST qPCR marker targeting grey seal-associated bacteria belonging to the Bifidobacteriaceae family. This marker can be used to identify potential fecal contamination of coastal areas by seals and complements the MST toolboxes of markers already developed for humans, wild birds and livestock. Abstract

Five terms of reference (ToRs) were addressed at the working group. The first three terms of reference were standing ones. Under ToR A, new information on cetacean and seal population abundance, distribution, and population/stock structure, was reviewed, including information on vagrancy in cetacean and pinniped species. For cetaceans, coverage from the latest SCANS-IV survey (summer 2022) was presented as well as the results of recent regional/national surveys, particularly those in the Bay of Biscay and around the Iberian Peninsula. Updates on population estimates and distribution were provided for particular species studies, such as some coastal bottlenose dolphin populations. For seals, latest monitoring results were given for harbour, grey, and Baltic and Saimaa ringed seals. In addition, where possible, local long-term trends were illustrated for those species, based on earlier efforts by WGMME to assemble these data into a seal database. For both species’ groups, recent records of vagrant species were summarised. Under ToR B, cetacean and seal management frameworks in the North Atlantic were discussed, with an overview of the EU Maritime Spatial Planning Directive, and examples from the United Kingdom, Spain and the Faroe Islands of national management frameworks regarding marine mammals., ToR C provided an overview of new published information with regards to anthropogenic threats to marine mammal populations following on from the review by WGMME in 2015 (ICES, 2015) and subsequent updates. These were considered under the following headings: cumulative effects, fishery interactions, chemical pollution including marine debris, underwater noise, ship strikes and other physical trauma, tourism disturbance, climate change, and new pathogens (including avian influenza). ToR D focused upon bycatch. In support of WGBYC, this ToR aimed to contribute to the Roadmap for ICES PETS bycatch advice. ToR E involved liaison with other WGs. The Chairs of the newly-formed WGJCDP introduced to WGMME members, the Joint Cetacean Database Programme, which is to be hosted by the ICES Data Centre. The scope to collect information on other marine species besides cetaceans was discussed. A meeting with another newly formed ICES working group, on Marine Protected Areas, was planned but was deferred at the request of that group. Abstract

The Working Group on Marine Mammal Ecology met in 2022 to address five terms of reference. Under the first of these, ToR A, new information on cetacean and seal population abundance, distribution, population/stock structure, was reviewed, including information on vagrant ma-rine mammal species. This was done to ensure the recording of possible range changes in marine mammal species in the future. For cetaceans, an update is given for the different species, providing for a latest estimate for all species studies. In this report, particular attention is given to the updating of information from Canadian and US waters, and together with those countries, latest estimates for cetacean species are provided. For seals, latest monitoring results are given for harbour, grey and Baltic ringed seals. In addition, where possible, local long-term trends are illustrated for those species, based on earlier WGMME efforts to assemble these data into the WGMME seal database. For both spe-cies’ groups, a first account of vagrant species is provided

Abstract

International audience; Sympatric harbour (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) are increasinglyconsidered potential competitors, especially since recent local declines in harbourseal numbers while grey seal numbers remained stable or increased at their Europeancore distributions. A better understanding of the interactions between these speciesis critical for conservation efforts. This study aimed to identify the trophic nicheoverlap between harbour and grey seals at the southern limit of their Europeanrange, in the Baie de Somme (BDS, Eastern English Channel, France), where numbersof resident harbour seals and visiting grey seals are increasing exponentially. Dietaryoverlap was identified from scat contents using hierarchical clustering. Isotopic nicheoverlap was quantified using δ13C and δ15N isotopic values from whiskers of 18 individuals,by estimating isotopic standard ellipses with a novel hierarchical modeldeveloped in a Bayesian framework to consider both intraindividual variability andinterindividual variability. Foraging areas of these individuals were identified fromtelemetry data. The three independent approaches provided converging results, revealinga high trophic niche overlap due to consumption of benthic flatfish. Two dietclusters were dominated by either small or large benthic flatfish; these comprised85.5% [CI95%: 80.3%–90.2%]of harbour seal scats and 46.8% [35.1%–58.4%]of greyseal scats. The narrower isotopic niche of harbour seals was nested within that ofgrey seals (58.2% [22.7%–100%]overlap). Grey seals with isotopic values similar toharbour seals foraged in coastal waters close to the BDS alike harbour seals did, suggestingthe niche overlap may be due to individual grey seal strategies. Our findingstherefore provide the basis for potential competition between both species (foragingon benthic flatfish close to the BDS). We suggest that a continued increase in sealnumbers and/or a decrease in flatfish supply in this area could cause/amplify competitiveinteractions and have deleterious effects on harbour seal colonies.

Abstract

Natural Environment Research Council (GrantNumber(s): SMRU1001; Grant recipient(s): Ailsa Hall) 1. In the United Kingdom (UK), several harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) populations have been declining over the past decade. In order to understand the effect of these changes in abundance, this study seeks to determine the population structure of harbour seals in the UK, and in Scotland in particular, on a wider and finer spatial scale than has previously been reported. 2. Harbour seals were genotyped from 18 different localities throughout the UK and neighbouring localities in mainland Europe, at 12 microsatellite loci. Results from Bayesian and frequency based tests of population structure suggested an initial structural division into two main groups consisting of localities in northern UK and southern UK-mainland Europe, respectively. 3. These two clusters were further divided into four geographically distinct genetic clusters. 4. An overall agreement between the genetic results and the existing management areas for UK harbour seals was observed, but it is also clear that an adaptive management approach should be adopted, in which the delineation of the current management areas is maintained until further genetic and ecological information has been accumulated and analysed. Abstract

International audience; Shipping noise is a threat to marine wildlife. Grey seals are benthic foragers, and thus experience acoustic noise throughout the water column, which makes them a good model species for a case study of the potential impacts of shipping noise. We used ship track data from the Celtic Sea, seal track data and a coupled ocean-acoustic modelling system to assess the noise exposure of grey seals along their tracks. It was found that the animals experience step changes in sound levels up to ~20dB at a frequency of 125Hz, and ~10dB on average over 10 1000Hz when they dive through the thermocline, particularly during summer. Our results showed large seasonal differences in the noise level experienced by the seals. These results reveal the actual noise exposure by the animals and could help in marine spatial planning. 2

Abstract

Marine mammals help gather information on some of the harshest environments on the planet, through the use of miniaturized ocean sensors glued on their fur. Since 2004, hundreds of diving marine animals, mainly Antarctic and Arctic seals, have been fitted with a new generation of Argos tags developed by the Sea Mammal Research Unit of the University of St Andrews in Scotland, UK. These tags investigate the at-sea ecology of these animals while simultaneously collecting valuable oceanographic data. Some of the study species travel thousands of kilometres continuously diving to great depths (up to 2100 m). The resulting data are now freely available to the global scientific community at http://www.meop.net. Despite great progress in their reliability and data accuracy, the current generation of loggers while approaching standard ARGO quality specifications have yet to match them. Yet, improvements are underway; they involve updating the technology, implementing a more systematic phase of calibration and taking benefit of the recently acquired knowledge on the dynamical response of sensors. Together these efforts are rapidly transforming animal tagging into one of the most important sources of oceanographic data in polar regions and in many coastal areas.

lien internet : http://www.scirp.org/journal/ojcm/; International audience; Thermal dissipation in power electronic devices can be improved through the elaboration of a new generation of layered heat sinks based on copper (Cu) -carbon nanofibers (CNF) composites. Though the high theoretical thermal conductivity of CNF (1200 W/m.K) no Cu-CNF composites with enhanced thermal properties are available. Indeed conventional compositing processes do not allow neither a good dispersion of the nano-reinforcements nor a control of the nanofiber-matrix interface which is not suitable for efficient heat transfers. In this paper, a process based on CNF coating with Cu followed by uniaxial hot pressing in described. It is shown that under proper experimental conditions the salt decomposition coating method is capable of achieving the desired high thermal conductivity values (> 400 W/m.K) thanks to a good dispersion of the CNF, low porosity content and the control of Cu-CNF interfaces.

Abstract

Nowadays, with growing use of location-aware, wirelessly connected, mobile devices, we can easily capture trajectories of mobile objects. To exploit these raw trajectories, we need to enhance them with semantic information. Several research fields are currently focusing on semantic trajectories to support inferences and queries to help users validate and discover more knowledge about mobile objects. The inference mechanism is needed for queries on semantic trajectories connected to other sources of information. Time and space knowledge are fundamental sources of information used by the inference operation on semantic trajectories. This article discusses new approach for inference mechanisms on semantic trajectories. The proposed solution is based on an ontological approach for modelling semantic trajectories integrating time concepts and rules. We present a case study with experiments, optimization and evaluation to show the complexity of inference and queries. Then, we introduce a refinement algorithm based on temporal neighbour to enhance temporal inference. The results show the positive impact of our proposal on reducing the complexity of the inference mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
