We report a comparative study on microwave control lines for a transmon qubit using: (i) flexible stripline transmission lines, and (ii) semi-rigid coaxial cables. During each experiment we performed repeated measurements of the energy relaxation and coherence times of a transmon qubit using one of the wiring configurations. Each measurement run spanned 70 h to 250 h of measurement time, and four separate cooldowns were performed so that each configuration could be tested twice. From these datasets we observe that changing the microwave control lines from coaxial cables to flexible stripline transmission lines does not have a measurable effect on coherence compared to thermal cycling the system, or random coherence fluctuations. Replacing the bulky cryoliquid-based cooling stages of cryoenabled instruments by chip-scale refrigeration is envisioned to disruptively reduce the system size similar to microprocessors did for computers. Electronic refrigerators based on superconducting tunnel junctions have been anticipated to provide a solution, but reaching the necessary above the 1-K operation temperature range has remained a goal out of reach for several decades. We show efficient electronic refrigeration by Al-AlO$_x$-Nb superconducting tunnel junctions starting from bath temperatures above 2 K. The junctions can deliver electronic cooling power up to approximately mW/mm$^2$, which enables us to demonstrate tunnel-current-driven electron temperature reduction from 2.4 K to below 1.6 K (34% relative cooling) against the phonon bath. Our work shows that the key material of integrated superconducting circuits - niobium - enables powerful cryogenic refrigerator technology. This result is a prerequisite for practical cryogenic chip-scale refrigerators and, at the same time, it introduces a new electrothermal tool for quantum heat-transport experiments.

Quantum correlations are a vital resource in advanced information processing based on quantum phenomena. Remarkably, the vacuum state of a quantum field may act as a key element for the generation of multipartite quantum entanglement. In this work, we achieve generation of genuine tripartite entangled state and its control by the use of the phase difference between two continuous pump tones. We demonstrate control of the subspaces of the covariance matrix for tripartite bisqueezed state. Furthermore, by optimizing the phase relationships in a three-tone pumping scheme we explore genuine quadripartite entanglement of a \textit{generalized} H-graph state ($\mathscr{\tilde{H}}$-graph). Our scheme provides a comprehensive control toolbox for the entanglement structure and allows us to demonstrate, for first time to our knowledge, genuine quadripartite entanglement of microwave modes. All experimental results are verified with numerical simulations of the nonlinear quantum Langevin equation. We envision that quantum resources facilitated by multi-pump configurations offer enhanced prospects for quantum data processing using parametric microwave cavities.

We fabricate and characterize superconducting through-silicon vias and electrodes suitable for superconducting quantum processors. We measure internal quality factors of a million for test resonators excited at single-photon levels, on chips with superconducting vias used to stitch ground planes on the front and back sides of the chips. This resonator performance is on par with the state of the art for silicon-based planar solutions, despite the presence of vias. Via stitching of ground planes is an important enabling technology for increasing the physical size of quantum processor chips, and is a first step toward more complex quantum devices with three-dimensional integration., Comment: Accepted version. 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables with appendices included

Superconducting devices, based on the Cooper pairing of electrons, play an important role in existing and emergent technologies, ranging from radiation detectors to quantum computers. Their performance is limited by spurious quasiparticle excitations formed from broken Cooper pairs. Efforts to achieve ultra-low quasiparticle densities have reached time-averaged numbers of excitations on the order of one in state-of-the-art devices. However, the dynamics of the quasiparticle population as well as the time scales for adding and removing individual excitations remain largely unexplored. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a superconductor completely free of quasiparticles for periods lasting up to seconds. We monitor the quasiparticle number on a mesoscopic superconductor in real time by measuring the charge tunneling to a normal metal contact. Quiet, excitation-free periods are interrupted by random-in-time Cooper pair breaking events, followed by a burst of charge tunneling within a millisecond. Our results demonstrate the possibility of operating devices without quasiparticles with potentially improved performance. In addition, our experiment probes the origins of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in our device; the decay of the Cooper pair breaking rate over several weeks following the initial cooldown rules out processes arising from cosmic or long-lived radioactive sources., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures + supplementary information

Radiation sensors based on the heating effect of the absorbed radiation are typically relatively simple to operate and flexible in terms of the input frequency. Consequently, they are widely applied, for example, in gas detection, security, THz imaging, astrophysical observations, and medical applications. A new spectrum of important applications is currently emerging from quantum technology and especially from electrical circuits behaving quantum mechanically. This circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) has given rise to unprecedented single-photon detectors and a quantum computer supreme to the classical supercomputers in a certain task. Thermal sensors are appealing in enhancing these devices since they are not plagued by quantum noise and are smaller, simpler, and consume about six orders of magnitude less power than the commonly used traveling-wave parametric amplifiers. However, despite great progress in the speed and noise levels of thermal sensors, no bolometer to date has proven fast and sensitive enough to provide advantages in cQED. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a bolometer surpassing this threshold with a noise equivalent power of $30\, \rm{zW}/\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$ on par with the current record while providing two-orders of magnitude shorter thermal time constant of 500 ns. Importantly, both of these characteristic numbers have been measured directly from the same device, which implies a faithful estimation of the calorimetric energy resolution of a single 30-GHz photon. These improvements stem from the utilization of a graphene monolayer as the active material with extremely low specific heat. The minimum demonstrated time constant of 200 ns falls greatly below the state-of-the-art dephasing times of roughly 100 {\mu}s for superconducting qubits and meets the timescales of contemporary readout schemes thus enabling the utilization of thermal detectors in cQED.

Radio-frequency reflectometry allows for fast and sensitive electrical readout of charge and spin qubits hosted in quantum dot devices coupled to resonant circuits. Optimizing readout, however, requires frequency tuning of the resonators and impedance matching. This is difficult to achieve using conventional semiconductor or ferroelectric-based varactors in the detection circuit as their performance degrades significantly in the mK temperature range relevant for solid-state quantum devices. Here we explore a different type of material, strontium titanate, a quantum paraelectric with exceptionally large field-tunable permittivity at low temperatures. Using strontium titanate varactors we demonstrate perfect impedance matching and resonator frequency tuning at 6 mK and characterize the varactors at this temperature in terms of their capacitance tunability, dissipative losses and magnetic field sensitivity. We show that this allows us to optimize the radio-frequency readout signal-to-noise ratio of carbon nanotube quantum dot devices to achieve a charge sensitivity of 4.8 $\mu$e/Hz$^{1/2}$ and capacitance sensitivity of 0.04 aF/Hz$^{1/2}$.

We carry out an experimental feasibility study of a magnetic field sensor based on the kinetic inductance of the high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductor yttrium barium copper oxide. We pattern thin superconducting films into radio-frequency resonators that feature a magnetic field pick-up loop. At 77 K and for film thicknesses down to 75 nm, we observe the persistence of screening currents that modulate the loop kinetic inductance. According to the experimental results the device concept appears attractive for sensing applications in ambient magnetic field environments. Since the introduction of bolometers more than a century ago, they have been applied in a broad spectrum of contexts ranging from security and the construction industry to particle physics and astronomy. However, emerging technologies and missions call for faster bolometers with lower noise. Here, we demonstrate a nanobolometer that exhibits roughly an order of magnitude lower noise equivalent power, $20\textrm{ zW}/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$, than previously reported for any bolometer. Importantly, it is more than an order of magnitude faster than other low-noise bolometers, with a time constant of 30 $\mu$s at $60\textrm{ zW}/\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$. These results suggest a calorimetric energy resolution of $0.3\textrm{ zJ}=h\times 0.4$ THz with a time constant of 30 $\mu$s. Thus the introduced nanobolometer is a promising candidate for future applications requiring extreme precision and speed such as those in astronomy and terahertz photon counting.

Quantum data is susceptible to decoherence induced by the environment and to errors in the hardware processing it. A future fault-tolerant quantum computer will use quantum error correction (QEC) to actively protect against both. In the smallest QEC codes, the information in one logical qubit is encoded in a two-dimensional subspace of a larger Hilbert space of multiple physical qubits. For each code, a set of non-demolition multi-qubit measurements, termed stabilizers, can discretize and signal physical qubit errors without collapsing the encoded information. Experimental demonstrations of QEC to date, using nuclear magnetic resonance, trapped ions, photons, superconducting qubits, and NV centers in diamond, have circumvented stabilizers at the cost of decoding at the end of a QEC cycle. This decoding leaves the quantum information vulnerable to physical qubit errors until re-encoding, violating a basic requirement for fault tolerance. Using a five-qubit superconducting processor, we realize the two parity measurements comprising the stabilizers of the three-qubit repetition code protecting one logical qubit from physical bit-flip errors. We construct these stabilizers as parallelized indirect measurements using ancillary qubits, and evidence their non-demolition character by generating three-qubit entanglement from superposition states. We demonstrate stabilizer-based quantum error detection (QED) by subjecting a logical qubit to coherent and incoherent bit-flip errors on its constituent physical qubits. While increased physical qubit coherence times and shorter QED blocks are required to actively safeguard quantum information, this demonstration is a critical step toward larger codes based on multiple parity measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 10 supplementary figures

A challenge for scaling up quantum processors using frequency-crowded, weakly anharmonic qubits is to drive individual qubits without causing leakage into non-computational levels of the others, while also minimizing the number of control lines. To address this, we implement single-qubit Wah-Wah control in a circuit QED processor with a single feedline for all transmon qubits, operating at the maximum gate speed achievable given the frequency crowding.
