In order to trace the instantaneous star formation rate (SFR) at high redshift, and thus help in understanding the relation between the different emission mechanisms related to star formation, we combine the recent 4-Ms Chandra X-ray data and the deep Very Large Array radio data in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South region. We find 268 sources detected both in the X-ray and radio bands. The availability of redshifts for {\tilde}95 per cent of the sources in our sample allows us to derive reliable luminosity estimates and the intrinsic properties from X-ray analysis for the majority of the objects. With the aim of selecting sources powered by star formation in both bands, we adopt classification criteria based on X-ray and radio data, exploiting the X-ray spectral features and time variability, taking advantage of observations scattered across more than 10 years. We identify 43 objects consistent with being powered by star formation. We also add another 111 and 70 star-forming candidates detected only in the radio and X-ray bands, respectively. We find a clear linear correlation between radio and X-ray luminosity in star-forming galaxies over three orders of magnitude and up to z{\tilde} 1.5. We also measure a significant scatter of the order of 0.4 dex, higher than that observed at low redshift, implying an intrinsic scatter component. The correlation is consistent with that measured locally, and no evolution with redshift is observed. Using a locally calibrated relation between the SFR and the radio luminosity, we investigate the L$_{X}$(2-10 keV)-SFR relation at high redshift. The comparison of the SFR measured in our sample with some theoretical models for the Milky Way and M31, two typical spiral galaxies, indicates that, with current data, we can trace typical spirals only at z{\le} 0.2, and strong starburst galaxies with SFRs as high as {\tilde}100 M$_{&sun;}$ yr$^{-1}$, up to z{\tilde} 1.5.

2011/2012 La mia Tesi di Dottorato si occupa dello studio della formazione stellare cosmica e delle galassie con formazione stellare (SFG), sia dal punto di vista osservativo che teorico. La formazione stellare è uno degli elementi chiave per comprendere la composizione e l'evoluzione delle galassie. Per identificare le galassie con formazione stellare è cruciale sfruttare informazioni multispettrali per ottenere una stima migliore del tasso di formazione stellare. La formazione stellare istantanea in una data galassia può essere stimata attraverso la misura di un indicatore collegato all'emissione da stelle giovani, massive e con vita breve. Tuttavia la maggior parte di questi indicatori sono affetti da forti incertezze. Va sottolineato che è possibile identificare le regioni di formazione stellare solo nelle galassie locali a causa della limitata risoluzione angolare strumentale, mentre per le galassie distanti è necessario affidarsi all'emissione totale di ciascuna galassia. Il mio lavoro scientifico si focalizza su due bande non affette da assorbimento, tipicamente una delle maggiori cause di incertezza, le bande X e radio. L'emissione X è principalmente associata alle binarie X di grande massa (HMXB), velocemente formate con la popolazione stellare di grande massa, mentre l'emissione radio è dovuta all'emissione termica di bremsstrahlung dalle nubi HII associate alle regioni di formazione stellare. Distinguere il segnale della formazione stellare da altri contributi ad alto redshift è complicato. Per studiare questo problema mi avvalgo dei più profondi dati disponibili, in una delle regioni del cielo più osservate, il Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). La survey radio con il Very Large Array (VLA) telescope dell'Extended Chandra Deep Field South (E--CDFS), e le osservazione profonde in banda X, permettono di esplorare la possibilità di tracciare la passata storia di formazione stellare cosmica usando la combinazione di dati X e radio. Il nostro scopo è l'identificazione delle sorgenti la cui emissione è dovuta a formazione stellare nelle bande radio e X. Un'analisi spettrale completa delle controparti X delle sorgenti VLA, supportata dai redshift ottici disponibili, ci permette di caratterizzare le loro proprietà X, e ci fornisce una classificazione robusta di galassie con formazione stellare e AGN. L'identificazione delle sorgenti con emissione dominata da processi di formazione stellare è stata fatta per mezzo di molti criteri nelle bande radio e X.La forte correlazione della SFR con la luminosità hard X nel nostro campione di galassie ad alto redshift mostra che le survey X possono fornire uno strumento potente e indipendente per misurare la SFR istantanea nelle galassie distanti. Comunque i nostri dati indicano anche che la complessa fisica dietro l'emissione radio e X associata alla formazione stellare può introdurre una significativa dispersione nella relazione tra la SFR e $L_X$. La seconda parte della tesi si occupa della modellizzazione teorica di galassie starburst utilizzando modelli di evoluzione chimica. Il modello consiste di un modello a una zona dove la galassia si forma per accrescimento (infall) di gas primordiale (nessun metallo). Il gas forma stelle, che a loro volta arricchiscono il mezzo interstellare (ISM) con nuovi elementi. Le supernovae (SNe) rilasciano parte della loro energia nell'ISM e, se l'energia termica del gas così riscaldato super quella di legame del gas, si sviluppano dei venti che espellono principalmente i metalli. Il confronto con la SFR, il tasso di SN e la metallicità di galassie locali (M82) e ad alto redshift ci porta ai seguenti risultati: Le galassie starburst ad alto redshift sono galassie massive. Quelle di piccola massa possono essere osservate solo nell'universo locale; Uno scenario che prevede molti burst brevi e molto efficienti riproduce meglio la SFR osservata e le abbondanze chimiche; Un'alta formazione stellare ($\nu > 10$ Gyr$^{-1}$) produce venti efficienti e arricchiti in metalli, che espellono una frazione importante della massa; Il confronto dei modelli con la galassia starburst locale M82 mostra che la galassia è in una fase di burst corto ed efficiente ($\nu > 5$ Gyr$^{-1}$) e che una IMF diversa dalla Salpeter riproduce meglio i dati; Solo i modelli con più burst corti e altamente efficienti raggiunge l'alta formazione stellare osservata ad alto redshift. Questo suggerisce che stiamo osservando le fasi di burst di queste galassie, mentre i periodo più quiescenti sono sotto il flusso limiti di osservabilità. XXIV Ciclo 1984

We study a sample of 883 sources detected in a deep Very Large Array survey at 1.4 GHz in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. The paper focuses on the identification of their optical and infrared (IR) counterparts. We use a likelihood ratio technique that is particularly useful when dealing with deep optical images to minimize the number of spurious associations. We find a reliable counterpart for 95% of our radio sources. Most of the counterparts (74%) are detected at optical wavelengths, but there is a significant fraction (21%) only detectable in the IR. Combining newly acquired optical spectra with data from the literature we are able to assign a redshift to 81% of the identified radio sources (37% spectroscopic). We also investigate the X-ray properties of the radio sources using the Chandra 4 Ms and 250 ks observations. In particular, we use a stacking technique to derive the average properties of radio objects undetected in the Chandra images. The results of our analysis are collected in a new catalog containing the position of the optical/IR counterpart, the redshift information and the X-ray fluxes. It is the deepest multi-wavelength catalog of radio sources, which will be used for future study of this galaxy population., 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS, Table 3 and 5 are available in their entirety in the ancillary data

We study the spectral properties of the unresolved cosmic X-ray background (CXRB) in the 1.5-7.0 keV energy band with the aim of providing an observational constraint on the statistical properties of those sources that are too faint to be individually probed. We made use of the Swift X-ray observation of the Chandra Deep Field South complemented by the Chandra data. Exploiting the lowest instrument background (Swift) together with the deepest observation ever performed (Chandra) we measured the unresolved emission at the deepest level and with the best accuracy available today. We find that the unresolved CXRB emission can be modeled by a single power law with a very hard photon index Gamma=0.1+/-0.7 and a flux of 5(+/-3)E-12 cgs in the 2.0-10 keV energy band (1 sigma error). Thanks to the low instrument background of the Swift-XRT, we significantly improved the accuracy with respect to previous measurements. These results point towards a novel ingredient in AGN population synthesis models, namely a positive evolution of the Compton-thick AGN population from local Universe to high redshift., 11 pages 12 figures; A&A in press
