Abstract: International audience, The propulsion of nano-ferromagnetic objects by means of MRI gradients is a promising approach to enable new forms of therapy. In this work, necessary techniques are presented to make this approach work. This includes path planning algorithms working on MRI data, ferromagnetic artifact imaging and a tracking algorithm which delivers position feedback for the microdevice and a propulsion sequence to enable interleaved magnetic propulsion and imaging. Using a dedicated software environment integrating path-planning methods and real-time tracking, a clinical MRI system is adapted to provide this new functionality for potential controlled interventional targeted therapeutic applications. Through MRI-based sensing analysis, this paper aims to propose a framework to plan a robust pathway to enhance the navigation ability to reach deep locations in human body. The proposed approaches are validated with different experiments.

2. Endovascular navigation of a ferromagnetic microrobot using MRI-based predictive control

Abstract: International audience, This paper presents real-time MRI-based control of a ferromagnetic microcapsule for endovascular navigation. The concept was studied for future development of microdevices designed to perform minimally invasive interventions in remote sites accessible through the human cardiovascular system. A system software architecture is presented illustrating the different software modules to allow navigation ofa microdevice in blood vessels, namely: (i) vessel path planner,(ii) magnetic gradient steering, (iii) tracking and (iv) closed-loopnavigation control. First, the position recognition of the microrobotinto the blood vessel is extracted using Frangi vesselness filtering from the pre-operation images. Then, a set of minimal trajectoryis predefined, using FMM, to guide the microrobot from the injection point to the tumor area through the anarchic vessel network. Basedon the pre-computed path, a GPC is proposed for robust time-multiplexed navigation along a 2D path in presence of pulsative flow. The simulation results suggest the validation of the proposed image processing andcontrol algorithms. A series of disturbances introduced in the presence and absence of closed-loop control affirms the robustness and effectiveness of this predictive control system.

Abstract: HBr emissions from volcanoes lead rapidly to the formation of BrO within volcanic plumes and have an impact on tropospheric chemistry, at least at the local and regional scales. The motivation of this paper is to prepare a framework for further 3D modelling of volcanic halogen emissions in order to determine their fate within the volcanic plume and then in the atmosphere at the regional and global scales. The main aim is to evaluate the ability of the model to produce a realistic partitioning of bromine species within a grid box size typical of MOCAGE (Model Of atmospheric Chemistry At larGE scale) 3D (0.5∘ × 0.5∘). This work is based on a 1D single-column configuration of the global chemistry-transport model MOCAGE that has low enough computational cost to allow us to perform a large set of sensitivity simulations. This paper uses the emissions from the Mount Etna eruption on 10 May 2008. Several reactions are added to MOCAGE to represent the volcanic plume halogen chemistry. A simple plume parameterisation is also implemented and tested. The use of this parameterisation tends to only slightly limit the efficiency of BrO net production. Both simulations with and without the parameterisation give results for the partitioning of the bromine species, of ozone depletion and of the BrO/SO2 ratio that are consistent with previous studies. A series of test experiments were performed to evaluate the sensitivity of the results to the composition of the emissions (primary sulfate aerosols, Br radical and NO) and to the effective radius assumed for the volcanic sulfate aerosols. Simulations show that the plume chemistry is sensitive to all these parameters. We also find that the maximum altitude of the eruption changes the BrO production, which is linked to the vertical variability of the concentrations of oxidants in the background air. These sensitivity tests display changes in the bromine chemistry cycles that are generally at least as important as the plume parameterisation. Overall, the version of the MOCAGE chemistry developed for this study is suitable to produce the expected halogen chemistry in volcanic plumes during daytime and night-time.

Abstract: In this paper, we present a new design for a 1 atm gas-mixing furnace using the gas mixture CO–CO2–SO2. This furnace can simulate disequilibrium processes such as magmatic and volcanic degassing. Here, we present the technical aspects of the design. The furnace can sustain temperatures of up to 1650 ∘C and has a hot zone that spans 200 mm vertically, where the hotspot is determined to be ∼ 32 mm below the midpoint of the furnace enclosure. The four mass flow controllers are individually calibrated and accurate to within 0.8 % of the specified value. The fO2 is accurately reproduced in the furnace within ±0.002 log units, as calibrated by the Fe–FeO reaction across the iron–wüstite (IW) buffer at 1300 ∘C. The furnace can reliably simulate dynamic conditions, where the fO2 can be modulated at a maximum rate of 2.0 log units min−1 by varying the gas mixture. A delay of 40 s is observed to attain the fO2 calculated from the gas mixture, at the hotspot. A series of safety measures to protect the user from exposure to the toxic gases are detailed. In our experiments, the furnace is used to determine sulfur isotope fractionation factors among melt, sulfide, and the gas phase, within a magmatic context, using either crystals of olivine or silica glass tubes. The furnace has the potential to investigate various other dynamic high-temperature reactions occurring on Earth.

Abstract: International audience; To improve our capabilities to model surrogate fuels, particularly in respect to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot formation, the pyrolysis of n-heptane is studied in a single-pulse shock across a wide temperature range (900–1700 K) at 20 bar nominal pressure and 4 ms residence time. Three different initial fuel mole fractions are considered, 103, 502, and 2000 ppm of n-heptane in argon. Fuel and intermediate species, including aromatics up to three-ring structures, are measured using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry diagnostics. An ongoing detailed chemical kinetic model for PAH chemistry has been updated to successfully capture the fuel decomposition, the formation of small hydrocarbons, and the concentration of the main PAH products. Major reaction pathways to PAHs are highlighted as well as the role of important intermediate species.

Abstract: International audience; Wetlands are the largest natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. The eddy covariance method provides robust measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CH4, but interpreting its spatiotemporal variations is challenging due to the co-occurrence of CH4 production, oxidation, and transport dynamics. Here, we estimate these three processes using a data-model fusion approach across 25 wetlands in temperate, boreal, and Arctic regions. Our data-constrained model—iPEACE—reasonably reproduced CH4 emissions at 19 of the 25 sites with normalized root mean square error of 0.59, correlation coefficient of 0.82, and normalized standard deviation of 0.87. Among the three processes, CH4 production appeared to be the most important process, followed by oxidation in explaining inter-site variations in CH4 emissions. Based on a sensitivity analysis, CH4 emissions were generally more sensitive to decreased water table than to increased gross primary productivity or soil temperature. For periods with leaf area index (LAI) of ≥20% of its annual peak, plant-mediated transport appeared to be the major pathway for CH4 transport. Abstract: While remote observations of the linear polarization of five low-albedo near-Earth asteroids are available at large phase angles, space missions have collected materials from the surface of two of them and one of them is already back to Earth. The structure of the regolith on the surface may be different from that encountered on larger objects, because of their low gravity and thermal stress cycling. Dust particles crushed from low-albedo meteorites (i.e. Orgueil and Allende) are tentatively used as analogues to provide a better approach of such regoliths. The PROGRA2 experiment studies the light-scattering properties of dust particles of various size distributions under Earth’s gravity either deposited or with clouds lifted by an air-draught, as well as under μ-gravity conditions. Similar maximum in polarization (i.e. Pmax) values are obtained experimentally for dark particles deposited or in levitation, showing that multiple scattering is negligible. The increased sensitivity of PROGRA2 instruments, together with imaging techniques, makes it possible to study Pmax with increasing sizes of the lifted particles, up to mm-sizes and above. Our results confirm that particles constituting the regolith are mm-sized and may reach polarization values up to 50 per cent in good agreement with remote observations. Some materials are also suggested to be present on the surface of the particles. Also, huge agglomerates made by random ballistic deposition may be considered as relevant analogues e.g. for pebbles and boulders.

Abstract: International audience; This contribution aims to define an analysis procedure for abnormal deposits in human tissues starting from in vivo characterization, down to the nanoscale using major instrumentation. Such an integrated approach is based on recent literature, but particularly on our research over the last twenty years on pathological calcifications. To this end, we begin by describing four successive analytical steps, on the injury site or physician’s surgery, at the hospital, at a typical physicochemical laboratory, and finally at a large scale (possibly multinational) facility. For the first step, we present various techniques which can be implemented on portable instruments. For the second step, commercial analytical setups are used. In a physicochemical laboratory, prototype or commercial setups are used and finally on large scale instruments, characterization techniques with better spatial resolution and/or higher sensitivity or techniques specific to synchrotron radiation are employed.

Abstract: International audience; By studying the unprecedented growth of a French-language press in the Dutch-speaking capital peripheral of the Austrian Netherlands in the mid-18th century, this article recounts the conditions for the development of a media strategy, with a local and international focus, the center of which was Brussels. From unpublished archives (records from the Privy Council of Brussels, various letters, periodicals published or refused) revealing media representations and strategies implemented by the authorities, this article examines the stakes of a government by the media in the mid-18th century from the point of view of powers. By giving particular attention to the aborted journalistic projects and the dissensions between the protagonists, this study allows to get into the core of media political practices, so as to grasp the diversity of the actors involved in these communication dynamics and what political intelligence of the media was possible in the ‘century of the Enlightenment’.; En étudiant l’essor sans précédent d’une presse en langue française dans la périphérique capitale néerlandophone des Pays-Bas autrichiens, cet article analyse les conditions d’élaboration d’un appareil médiatique à visée locale et internationale au milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Centrée sur le cas exemplaire de Bruxelles, cette enquête est fondée sur des sources locales, variées et nombreuses : d’une part, les 9 journaux imprimés et les 5 journaux refusés à Bruxelles entre 1755 et 1767, d’autre part, des archives inédites témoignant des représentations et des stratégies médiatiques mises en œuvre par les autorités (papiers du Conseil privé de Bruxelles, correspondances diverses, dossiers de la censure). Par l’étude de cette documentation inédite, l’article met en lumière les enjeux d’un gouvernement par les médias au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, du point de vue des pouvoirs. L’attention particulière portée aux projets journalistiques avortés et aux dissensions entre les protagonistes (saisis notamment grâce aux archives de la censure) permet de pénétrer les mécanismes des pratiques politiques médiatiques du gouvernement bruxellois. On observe la diversité des acteurs politiques et journalistiques et ce que pouvait être une intelligence politique des médias au XVIIIe siècle. La figure centrale dans le phénomène ici analysé, du comte de Cobenzl, ministre plénipotentiaire autrichien à Bruxelles, sert de fil directeur pour interroger la nature et les enjeux de l’action gouvernementale dans le domaine médiatique ainsi que les débats et les difficultés qu’elle suscite, à l’échelle locale d’une monarchie composite.

Abstract: We search for a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) generated by a network of cosmic strings using six millisecond pulsars from Data Release 2 (DR2) of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA). We perform a Bayesian analysis considering two models for the network of cosmic string loops, and compare it to a simple power-law model which is expected from the population of supermassive black hole binaries. Our main strong assumption is that the previously reported common red noise process is a SGWB. We find that the one-parameter cosmic string model is slightly favored over a power-law model thanks to its simplicity. If we assume a two-component stochastic signal in the data (supermassive black hole binary population and the signal from cosmic strings), we get a $95\%$ upper limit on the string tension of $\log_{10}(Gμ) < -9.9$ ($-10.5$) for the two cosmic string models we consider. In extended two-parameter string models, we were unable to constrain the number of kinks. We test two approximate and fast Bayesian data analysis methods against the most rigorous analysis and find consistent results. These two fast and efficient methods are applicable to all SGWBs, independent of their source, and will be crucial for analysis of extended data sets., 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: International audience; Natural organic matter (OM) has a complex structure whose complete structural and chemical description remains a challenge. Rock-Eval® device constitutes a rapid and affordable method for obtaining key quantitative and qualitative parameters on OM. Previous studies on soil samples proposed to deconvolute or to split into temperature slices Rock-Eval® S2 pyrograms in order to distinguish and quantify chemical fractions of increasing thermal lability. In order to provide support for such an assumption, this work proposes a methodological approach based on coupling a temperature-programmed pyrolyser to a standard mass spectrometer (Py-MS). In this manuscript, we compare results acquired by Rock-Eval® pyrolysis with those from Total Ion Current (TIC) traces obtained by Py-MS on a set of reference soil samples, completed by dissolved OM, source rock and coal samples, in order to test the extent to which this approach can be generalized. Our results show good quantitative and qualitative agreements between the two methods. This comparison is a prerequisite before going further and addressing the molecular significance of S2 pyrograms deconvolution through the examination of m/z fragments abundance curves.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for continuous gravitational wave signals (CGWs) in the second data release (DR2) of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) collaboration. The most significant candidate event from this search has a gravitational wave frequency of 4-5 nHz. Such a signal could be generated by a supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) in the local Universe. We present the results of a follow-up analysis of this candidate using both Bayesian and frequentist methods. The Bayesian analysis gives a Bayes factor of 4 in favor of the presence of the CGW over a common uncorrelated noise process, while the frequentist analysis estimates the p-value of the candidate to be 1%, also assuming the presence of common uncorrelated red noise. However, comparing a model that includes both a CGW and a gravitational wave background (GWB) to a GWB only, the Bayes factor in favour of the CGW model is only 0.7. Therefore, we cannot conclusively determine the origin of the observed feature, but we cannot rule it out as a CGW source. We present results of simulations that demonstrate that data containing a weak gravitational wave background can be misinterpreted as data including a CGW and vice versa, providing two plausible explanations of the EPTA DR2 data. Abstract: Pulsar Timing Array experiments probe the presence of possible scalar/pseudoscalar ultralight dark matter particles through decade-long timing of an ensemble of galactic millisecond radio pulsars. With the second data release of the European Pulsar Timing Array, we focus on the most robust scenario, in which dark matter interacts only gravitationally with ordinary baryonic matter. Our results show that ultralight particles with masses $10^{-24.0}~\text{eV} \lesssim m \lesssim 10^{-23.2}~\text{eV}$ cannot constitute $100\%$ of the measured local dark matter density, but can have at most local density $\rho\lesssim 0.15$ GeV/cm$^3$., Comment: 5 pages + acknowledgements + refs, 2 figures

Abstract: Here we report on Neanderthal engravings on a cave wall at La Roche-Cotard (LRC) in central France, made more than 57±3 thousand years ago. Following human occupation, the cave was completely sealed by cold-period sediments, which prevented access until its discovery in the 19 th century and first excavation in the early 20 th century. The timing of the closure of the cave is based on 50 optically stimulated luminescence ages derived from sediment collected inside and from around the cave. The anthropogenic origin of the spatially-structured, non-figurative marks found within the cave is confirmed using taphonomic, traceological and experimental evidence. Cave closure occurred significantly before the regional arrival of H . sapiens , and all artefacts from within the cave are typical Mousterian lithics; in Western Europe these are uniquely attributed to H . neanderthalensis . We conclude that the LRC engravings are unambiguous examples of Neanderthal abstract design.

Abstract: The International Pulsar Timing Array 2nd data release is the combination ofdatasets from worldwide collaborations. In this study, we search for continuouswaves: gravitational wave signals produced by individual supermassive blackhole binaries in the local universe. We consider binaries on circular orbitsand neglect the evolution of orbital frequency over the observational span. Wefind no evidence for such signals and set sky averaged 95% upper limits ontheir amplitude h 95 . The most sensitive frequency is 10nHz with h 95 = 9.110-15 . We achieved the best upper limit to date at low and high frequencies ofthe PTA band thanks to improved effective cadence of observations. In ouranalysis, we have taken into account the recently discovered common red noiseprocess, which has an impact at low frequencies. We also find that the peculiarnoise features present in some pulsars data must be taken into account toreduce the false alarm. We show that using custom noise models is essential insearching for continuous gravitational wave signals and setting the upperlimit.

Abstract: International audience; Bispidine (3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane) provides a rigid and preorganized scaffold that is particularly interesting for the stable and inert complexation of metal ions, especially for their application in medical imaging. In this study, we present the synthesis of two bispidine ligands with N-methanephosphonate (H4L1) and N-methanecarboxylate (H3L2) substituents as well as the physico-chemical properties of the corresponding Mn2+ and Zn2+ complexes. The two complexes [Mn(L-1)](2- )and [Mn(L-2)](-) have relatively moderate thermodynamic stability constants according to potentiometric titration data. However, they both display an exceptional kinetic inertness, as assessed by transmetallation experiments in the presence of 50 equiv excess of Zn2+, showing only similar to 40 and 20% of dissociation for [Mn(L-1)](2- ) and [Mn(L-2)](-), respectively, after 150 days at pH 6 and 37°C. Proton relaxivities amount to r(1 )= 4.31 mM(-1 )s(-1 )([Mn(L-1)](2-)) and 3.64 mM(-1) s(-1 )([Mn(L-2)](-)) at 20 MHz, 25°C, and are remarkable for Mn2+ complexes with one inner-sphere water molecule (q = 1); they are comparable to that of the commercial contrast agent [Gd(DOTA)(H2O)](-). The presence of one inner-sphere water molecule and an associative water exchange mechanism was confirmed by temperature-dependent transverse O-17 relaxation rate measurements, which yielded k(ex)(298) = 0.12 x 10(7) and 5.5 x 10(7) s(-1 )for the water exchange rate of the phosphonate and the carboxylate complex, respectively. In addition, radiolabeling experiments with Mn-52 were also performed with H-2(L-1)(2-) showing excellent radiolabeling properties and quantitative complexation at pH 7 in 15 min at room temperature as well as excellent stability of the complex in various biological media over 24 h.

Abstract: As a consequence of extreme heat and drought, record-breaking wildfires developed and ravaged south-eastern Australia during the fire season 2019–2020. The fire strength reached its paroxysmal phase at the turn of the year 2019–2020. During this phase, pyrocumulonimbus clouds (pyroCb) developed and injected biomass burning aerosols and gases into the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). The UTLS aerosol layer was massively perturbed by these fires, with aerosol extinction increased by a factor of 3 in the visible spectral range in the Southern Hemisphere, with respect to a background atmosphere, and stratospheric aerosol optical depth reaching values as large as 0.015 in February 2020. Using the best available description of this event by observations, we estimate the radiative forcing (RF) of such perturbations of the Southern Hemispheric aerosol layer. We use offline radiative transfer modelling driven by observed information of the aerosol extinction perturbation and its spectral variability obtained from limb satellite measurements. Based on hypotheses on the absorptivity and the angular scattering properties of the aerosol layer, the regional (at three latitude bands in the Southern Hemisphere) clear-sky TOA (top-of-atmosphere) RF is found varying from small positive values to relatively large negative values (up to −2.0 W m−2), and the regional clear-sky surface RF is found to be consistently negative and reaching large values (up to −4.5 W m−2). We argue that clear-sky positive values are unlikely for this event, if the ageing/mixing of the biomass burning plume is mirrored by the evolution of its optical properties. Our best estimate for the area-weighted global-equivalent clear-sky RF is -0.35±0.21 (TOA RF) and -0.94±0.26 W m−2 (surface RF), thus the strongest documented for a fire event and of comparable magnitude with the strongest volcanic eruptions of the post-Pinatubo era. The surplus of RF at the surface, with respect to TOA, is due to absorption within the plume that has contributed to the generation of ascending smoke vortices in the stratosphere. Highly reflective underlying surfaces, like clouds, can nevertheless swap negative to positive TOA RF, with global average RF as high as +1.0 W m−2 assuming highly absorbing particles.

Given the complexity of distributed software and the adverse effects of incorrect reconfigurations, a suitable methodology is needed to ensure the correctness of reconfigurations in component- based systems. This survey gives the reader a global perspective over existing formal techniques that pursue this goal. It distinguishes different ways in which formal methods can improve the reliability of reconfigurations, and lists techniques that contribute to solving each of these particular scientific challenges.

Abstract: Proteins are known to be social interaction signals in many species in the animal kingdom. Common mediators in mammals and aquatic species, they have seldom been identified as such in insects' behaviors. Yet, they could represent an important component to support social signals in social insects, as the numerous physical contacts between individuals would tend to favor the use of contact compounds in their interactions. However, their role in social interactions is largely unexplored: are they rare or simply underestimated? In this preliminary study, we show that, in the termite Reticulitermes flavipes, polar extracts from reproductives trigger body-shaking of workers (a vibratory behavior involved in reproductives recognition) while extracts from workers do not. Molecular profiling of these cuticular extracts using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry reveals higher protein diversity in reproductives than in workers and a sex-specific composition exclusive to reproductives. While the effects observed with extracts are not as strong as with live termites, these results open up the intriguing possibility that social signaling may not be limited to cuticular hydrocarbons or other non-polar, volatile chemicals as classically accepted. Our results suggest that polar compounds, in particular some of the Cuticular Protein Compounds (CPCs) shown here by MALDI to be specific to reproductives, could play a significant role in insect societies. While this study is preliminary and further comprehensive molecular characterization is needed to correlate the body-shaking triggering effects with a given set of polar compounds, this exploratory study opens new perspectives for understanding the role of polar compounds such as proteins in caste discrimination, fertility signaling, or interspecific insect communication.

Abstract: Accurate forecasts of thermosphere densities, realistic calculation of aerodynamic drag, and propagation of the uncertainty on the predicted orbit positions are required for conjunction analysis and collision avoidance decision making. The main focus of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) International Space Weather Action Teams (ISWAT) involved in atmosphere variability studies is satellite drag, and this paper reviews our current capabilities and lists recommendations. The uncertainty in the density of thermosphere models is due to the combined effect of employing simplified or incomplete algorithms, inconsistent and sparse density data, incomplete drivers for upper atmosphere heating processes (proxies for solar and geomagnetic activity), and forecast error of said drivers. When calculating drag, the uncertainty is amplified due to the satellite shape and aerodynamic model. The sources of uncertainty are reviewed in this paper, and possible and promising ways forward are proposed. Data assimilation models/approaches have demonstrated superior skill in reproducing the thermosphere's state and are the most promising way forward. However, data to drive the models is generally lacking, and they require significant computational resources. Substantial progress can only be made by means of setting up a full-blown observing system, including not only density and composition measurements, but equally the necessary model drivers.

Abstract: Previous works have shown the existence of protein partnership, belonging to a MultiStep Phosphorelay (MSP), potentially involved in osmosensing in Populus. The first actor of this signalling pathway belongs to the histidine-aspartate kinase (HK) family, which also includes the yeast osmosensor Sln1, as well as the Arabidopsis putative osmosensor AHK1. In poplar, the homologous AHK1 protein corresponds to a pair of paralogous proteins, HK1a and HK1b, exhibiting an extracellular domain (ECD), as in Sln1 and AHK1. An ECD alignment of AHK1-like proteins, from different plant species, showed a particularly well conserved ECD and revealed the presence of a cache domain. This level of conservation suggested a functional role of this domain in osmosensing. Thus, we tested this possibility by modelling assisted mutational analysis of the cache domain of the Populus HK1 proteins. The mutants were assessed for their ability to respond to different osmotic stress and the results point to an involvement of this domain in HK1 functionality. Furthermore, since HK1b was shown to respond better to stress than HK1a, these two receptors constituted a good system to search for osmosensing determinants responsible for this difference in efficiency. With domain swapping experiments, we finally demonstrated that the cache domain, as well as the second transmembrane domain, are involved in the osmosensing efficiency of these receptors.

Abstract: International audience; Ground surface analysis of CO2 emissions with δ13C determination is experimentally demonstrated to be a potential methodology to monitor, on line, the dynamics of petroleum-hydrocarbon biodegradation in soil aquifers, thanks to the improvement of the Isotopic Ratio Infra Red Spectroscopy technique. Biodegradation rate of remaining hydrocarbon substrates in groundwater can be quantified using basic application of the Rayleigh equations, by δ13CCO2 analysis released at ground surface above the pollution plume instead of usual approaches based on groundwater hydrocarbons δ13C analysis, when physical and chemical properties for the contaminated site meet appropriate conditions.The validation approach for that gasoline contaminated specific site is discussed and verified by comparison of first order attenuation rate constant determined from δ13CCO2 analysis emitted at ground surface and from δ13CTOLUENE analysis in ground water. A kinetic fractionation factor α of 0.9979 (or ε value of −2.1 ± 0.5‰) is estimated for the biodegradation of the most reactive hydrocarbon substrates (TEX). The treatment of this Rayleigh equations by linear regression of δ13CCO2 values along the predominant direction of groundwater flow leads to the following results and conclusions for that site: (i) first order biodegradation rate constants (and annual variation) are maximum after the activation of a Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) in May 2014: 0.92(+0.29–0.17) year−1, and during July and October: 0.46(+0.14–0.09) year−1 and minimum in mid-winter in February 2015: 0.17(+0.05–0.03) year−1, given by the estimation range for ε. These results are in the lower range with reported in literature for similar contaminated sites (1.6–18 year−1) considering natural attenuation under sulfate reducing conditions and (ii) the seasonal variation of the first order biodegradation rate constant is mainly correlated with the seasonal variation of the CO2 flux, where maximum values are in summers and minimum values in winters. Both seasonal variations are mainly due to the annual cycle of the natural biodegradation activity at the scale of the pollution plume, rather than the activation of the PRB.This work demonstrates that δ13CCO2 analysis released at ground surface from biodegradation of groundwater hydrocarbons could provide, under characterized and appropriate conditions, a non-intrusive (without soil samplings), fast, and low-cost online method to monitor and therefore to optimize soil remediation processes in real time. Abstract: We present results from radio and X-ray observations of the X-ray transient MAXI J1810-222. The nature of the accretor in this source has not been identified. In this paper, we show results from a quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray monitoring campaign taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory X-ray telescope (XRT), and the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). We also analyse the X-ray temporal behaviour using observations from the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). Results show a seemingly peculiar X-ray spectral evolution of MAXI J1810-222 during this outburst, where the source was initially only detected in the soft X-ray band for the early part of the outburst. Then, ~200 days after MAXI J1810-222 was first detected the hard X-ray emission increased and the source transitioned to a long-lived (~1.5 years) bright, harder X-ray state. After this hard state, MAXI J1810-222 returned back to a softer state, before fading and transitioning again to a harder state and then appearing to follow a more typical outburst decay. From the X-ray spectral and timing properties, and the source's radio behaviour, we argue that the results from this study are most consistent with MAXI J1810-222 being a relatively distant ($\gtrsim$6 kpc) black hole X-ray binary. A sufficiently large distance to source can simply explain the seemingly odd outburst evolution that was observed, where only the brightest portion of the outburst was detectable by the all-sky X-ray telescopes., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: Given any measurable subset $\omega$ of a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and given any $T>0$, we define $\ell^T(\omega)\in[0,1]$ as the smallest average time over $[0,T]$ spent by all geodesic rays in $\omega$. This quantity appears naturally when studying observability properties for the wave equation on $M$, with $\omega$ as an observation subset: the condition $\ell^T(\omega)>0$ is the well known \emph{Geometric Control Condition}.In this article we establish two properties of the functional $\ell^T$, one is geometric and the other is probabilistic.The first geometric property is on the maximal discrepancy of $\ell^T$ when taking the closure. We may have $\ell^T(\mathring{\omega})1/2$ then the Geometric Control Condition is satisfied and thus the wave equation is observable on $\omega$ in time $T$. The second property is of probabilistic nature. We take $M=\mathbb{T}^2$, the flat two-dimensional torus, and we consider a regular grid on it, a regular checkerboard made of $n^2$ square white cells. We construct random subsets $\omega_\varepsilon^n$ by darkening each cell in this grid with a probability $\varepsilon$. We prove that the random law $\ell^T(\omega_\varepsilon^n)$ converges in probability to $\varepsilon$ as $n\rightarrow+\infty$.As a consequence, if $n$ is large enough then the Geometric Control Condition is satisfied almost surely and thus the wave equation is observable on $\omega_\varepsilon^n$ in time $T$.

Abstract: International audience; Serpentinization and carbonation of ultramafic formations is a ubiquitous phenomenon, which deeply influences the biogeochemical cycles of water, hydrogen, carbon…while supporting the particular biosphere around the oceanic hydrothermal vents. Carbonation of peridotites and other mafic and ultramafic rocks is also a hot topic in the current energy landscape as the engineered sequestration of mineral CO2 in these formations could help reduce the atmospheric emissions and cope with climate change. In this study, we present two reactive percolation experiments performed on a natural serpentinite dredged from the ultraslow South-West Indian Oceanic Ridge. The serpentinite cores (length 3-4 cm and dia. 5.6 mm) were subjected for about 10 days to the continuous injection of a NaHCO3-saturated brine at respectively 160°C and 280°C. Petrographic and petrophysical results as well as outlet fluid compositions were compared to numerical batch simulations performed with the PHREEQC open software allowing to reconstruct the mineralogical evolution of both cores. The most striking observation is the fast and dramatic decrease of the permeability for both experiments principally due to the precipitation of carbonates. On the contrary, serpentine was found to be less impacting as it precipitates in low-flow zones, out of the main percolation paths. In total, about 5.6% of the total injected CO2 was retained in the core, at 280°C. In the same time, hydrogen was consistently produced with a total recovered H2 corresponding to 0.8% of the maximum H2 possible. The global behavior of the cores is interpreted as the result from an interplay between interacting spatio-temporal lengthscales controlled by the Damköhler number.

Abstract: International audience; Solubility experiments were performed on a trachyte and a pantellerite from Pantelleria. The trachyte has SiO 2 = 65.2 wt%, Al 2 O 3 = 15.2 wt% and a peralkaline index (P.I. = molar[(Na 2 O + K 2 O)/Al 2 O 3 ]) ∼ 1 while the pantellerite has SiO 2 = 72.2 wt%, Al 2 O 3 = 11 wt% and a P.I. = 1.3. Solubility experiments were performed in the pressure range of 50-300 MPa at T = 950°C for the trachyte and 50-200 MPa at T = 850°C for the pantellerite. The water content of experimental glasses was determined by Karl Fischer titration, elemental analyser and FT-IR spectroscopy. Water content appears similar in both compositions for analogous pressure conditions, varying from ∼2.5 wt% at 50 MPa to ∼5.8 at 200 MPa. Comparison of the experimental data with the thermodynamic models shows that the empirical model of Moore et al. [1998] better matches the experimental data for both compositions, while the thermodynamic models of Papale et al. [2006] and Ghiorso and Gualda [2015] tend to overestimate melt water content, probably due to the paucity of peralkaline melt compositions used for calibration. One inference of these new solubility data is on MI-derived depth of felsic reservoirs at Pantelleria which deepens from 2.4 to 3.5 km.

Abstract: International audience; This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a simplified single reed instrument model subject to a stochastic forcing of white noise type when one of its bifurcation parameters (the dimensionless blowing pressure) increases linearly over time and crosses the Hopf bifurcation point of its trivial equilibrium position. The stochastic slow dynamics of the model is first obtained by means of the stochastic averaging method. The resulting averaged system reduces to a non-autonomous one-dimensional Itô stochastic differential equation governing the time evolution of the mouthpiece pressure amplitude. Under relevant approximations the latter is solved analytically treating separately cases where noise can be ignored and cases where it cannot. From that, two analytical expressions of the bifurcation parameter value for which the mouthpiece pressure amplitude gets its initial value back are deduced. These special values of the bifurcation parameter characterize the effective appearance of sound in the instrument and are called deterministic dynamic bifurcation point if the noise can be neglected and stochastic dynamic bifurcation point otherwise. Finally, for illustration and validation purposes, the analytical results are compared with direct numerical integration of the model in both deterministic and stochastic situations. In each considered case, a good agreement is observed between theoretical results and numerical simulations, which validates the proposed analysis.

Abstract: Our knowledge of the second Iron Age has evolved considerably over the past 30 years as shown by several recent syntheses (Buchsenschutz et al., 2015; Garcia, 2014; Krausz et al., 2013; Guilaine, Garcia, 2018). In the more specific field of numismatics, research has focused mainly on the civilization of the oppida (late 2nd-Ist centuries BC), a period when there was already a significant monetarization of economic activities. But the realities prior to the emergence of the oppida remain largely unknown. Looking further upstream, as early as the 3rd century BC, this study looks at the triggers for the monetarisation of the economy in protohistoric societies at various targeted points in Europe. Does the transformation of trading systems result from a structural change in European societies?, Nos connaissances sur le second âge du Fer ont considérablement évolué depuis 30 ans comme l’ont montré plusieurs synthèses récentes (Buchsenschutz et al., 2015 ; Garcia, 2014 ; Krausz et al., 2013 ; Guilaine, Garcia, 2018). Dans le domaine plus particulier de la numismatique, les recherches ont surtout porté sur la civilisation des oppida (fin IIe-Ier siècle avant notre ère), période où l’on constate une monétarisation déjà importante des activités économiques. Mais les réalités antérieures à l’apparition des oppida demeurent largement méconnues. En regardant plus en amont, dès le IIIe siècle avant notre ère, cette étude s’intéresse aux éléments déclencheurs de la monétarisation de l’économie dans les sociétés protohistoriques, en divers points ciblés de l’Europe. La transformation des systèmes d’échanges résulte-t-elle d’une modification structurelle des sociétés européennes ?

Abstract: Volcanoes are known to be important emitters of atmospheric gases and aerosols, which for certain volcanoes can include halogen gases and in particular HBr. HBr emitted in this way can undergo rapid atmospheric oxidation chemistry (known as the bromine-explosion) within the volcanic emission plume leading to the production of bromine oxide (BrO) and ozone depletion. In this work, we present the results of a modelling study of a volcanic eruption from Mt Etna that occurred around Christmas 2018 that lasted 6 days. The aims of this study are to demonstrate and evaluate the ability of the regional 3D Chemistry Transport Model MOCAGE to simulate the volcanic halogen chemistry in this case study, to analyse the variability of the chemical processes during the plume transport, and to quantify its impact on the composition of the troposphere at a regional scale over the Mediterranean basin. The comparison of the tropospheric SO2 and BrO columns from 25 to 30 December 2018 from the MOCAGE simulation with the columns derived from the TROPOMI satellite measurements shows a very good agreement for the transport of the plumeand a good consistency for the concentrations if considering the uncertainties in the flux estimates and the TROPOMI columns. The analysis of the bromine species’ partitioning and of the associated chemical reaction rates provides a detailed picture of the simulated bromine chemistry throughout the diurnal cycle and at different stages of the volcanic plume’s evolution. The partitioning of the bromine species is modulated by the time evolution of the emissions during the 6 days of the eruption, by the meteorological conditions, and by the distance of the plume from the vent/the time since the emission. As the plume travels further from the vent, the halogen source gas HBr becomes depleted, BrO production in the plume becomes less efficient, and ozone depletion (proceeding via the Br + O3 reaction followed by the BrO self-reaction) decreases. The depletion of HBr relative to the other prevalent hydracid HCl leads to a shift in the relative concentrations of the Br− and Cl− ions, which in turn leads to reduced production of Br2 relative to BrCl. The MOCAGE simulations show a regional impact of the volcanic eruption on the oxidants OH and O3 with a reduced burden of both gases that is caused by the chemistry in the volcanic plume. This reduction in atmospheric oxidation capacity results in a reduced CH4 burden. Finally, sensitivity tests on the composition of the emissions carried out in this work show that the production of BrO is higher when the volcanic emissions of sulfate aerosols are increased but occurs very slowly when no sulfate and Br radicals are assumed to be in the emissions. Both sensitivity tests highlight a significant impact on the oxidants in the troposphere at the regional scale of these assumptions. All the results of this modelling study are consistent with the previous studies carried out on the volcanic halogens modelling.

Abstract: Mutual impedance experiments are in situ plasma diagnostic techniques for the identification of the plasma density and the electron temperature. Different versions of mutual impedance instruments were included in past and present space missions (e.g., Rosetta, BepiColombo, JUICE and Comet Interceptor). New versions are currently being devised to fit the strong mass, volume and power constraints on nanosatellite platforms for future multi-point space missions. In this study, our goal is to define and validate two new instrumental modes (i.e., chirp and multi-spectral modes) to improve the time resolution of the experiment with respect to typical mutual impedance instrumental modes (i.e., frequency sweep). Higher time resolution measurements are expected to simplify the integration of mutual impedance experiments onboard nanosatellite platforms by facilitating antenna sharing between different experiments. The investigation is performed both (a) numerically, using a 1D-1V electrostatic full kinetic Vlasov-Poisson model and, (b) experimentally, with laboratory tests using a vacuum chamber and a plasma source. From a plasma diagnostic point of view, we find that both the chirp and multi-spectral modes provide measurements identical to the (reference) frequency sweep mode. From an instrumental point of view, multi-spectral measurements are faster than frequency sweep measurements but they require larger amounts of onboard computing resources (i.e., larger power consumption). Chirp measurements, instead, outperform frequency sweep measurements both in terms of measurement duration (20 times faster) and onboard processor usage (20% less).

Abstract: International audience; The formation of large tin-tungsten (Sn-W) deposits around granitic intrusions requires the circulation of large volumes of fluids within permeable structures. Half of the world’s tungsten production originates from highly mineralized veins above granitic intrusions and from the altered part of the granite (the greisen), whose formation results from intense fluid-rock interactions. During greisenization processes, mineral reactions involve a decrease in the rock volume and thus an increase in porosity and permeability. To understand the complex fluid-rock interactions leading to the formation of large Sn-W ore deposits, we conducted numerical modeling accounting for magmatic fluid production and realistic permeability changes due to granite alteration and overpressure in the hosting rocks. The water/rock ratio is computed to constrain the rate of greisenization and therefore the porosity and permeability evolution laws. Four model results are presented: with and without fluid production exsolved from the granitic magma, and with and without dynamic reaction-enhanced permeability. The formation of greisen is reproduced, and greisen thickness reaches 200 m for the more sophisticated model. The interplay between greisenization and fluid production creates zones of overpressure above the granite that could localize the permeable structures such as the veins swarm observed at Panasqueira. Dynamic permeability promotes high fluid velocity and intense fluid-rock exchanges that could result in the formation of large ore deposits by enhancing mass transfer within and above granitic intrusions.

Abstract: Over the past decade, observations of relativistic outflows from outbursting X-ray binaries in the Galactic field have grown significantly. In this work, we present the first detection of moving and decelerating radio-emitting outflows from an X-ray binary in a globular cluster. MAXI J1848-015 is a recently discovered transient X-ray binary in the direction of the globular cluster GLIMPSE-C01. Using observations from the VLA, and a monitoring campaign with the MeerKAT observatory for 500 days, we model the motion of the outflows. This represents some of the most intensive, long-term coverage of relativistically moving X-ray binary outflows to date. We use the proper motions of the outflows from MAXI J1848-015 to constrain the component of the intrinsic jet speed along the line of sight, $\beta_\textrm{int} \cos \theta_\textrm{ejection}$, to be $=0.19\pm0.02$. Assuming it is located in GLIMPSE-C01, at 3.4 kpc, we determine the intrinsic jet speed, $\beta_\textrm{int}=0.79\pm0.07$, and the inclination angle to the line of sight, $\theta_\textrm{ejection}=76^\circ\pm2^{\circ}$. This makes the outflows from MAXI J1848-015 somewhat slower than those seen from many other known X-ray binaries. We also constrain the maximum distance to MAXI J1848-015 to be $4.3$ kpc. Lastly, we discuss the implications of our findings for the nature of the compact object in this system, finding that a black hole primary is a viable (but as-of-yet unconfirmed) explanation for the observed properties of MAXI J1848-015. If future data and/or analysis provide more conclusive evidence that MAXI J1848-015 indeed hosts a black hole, it would be the first black hole X-ray binary in outburst identified in a Galactic globular cluster., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, ApJL in press

Abstract: The nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB) is expected to be an aggregate signal of an ensemble of gravitational waves emitted predominantly by a large population of coalescing supermassive black hole binaries in the centres of merging galaxies. Pulsar timing arrays, ensembles of extremely stable pulsars, are the most precise experiments capable of detecting this background. However, the subtle imprints that the GWB induces on pulsar timing data are obscured by many sources of noise. These must be carefully characterized to increase the sensitivity to the GWB. In this paper, we present a novel technique to estimate the optimal number of frequency coefficients for modelling achromatic and chromatic noise and perform model selection. We also incorporate a new model to fit for scattering variations in the pulsar timing package temponest and created realistic simulations of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) datasets that allowed us to test the efficacy of our noise modelling algorithms. We present an in-depth analysis of the noise properties of 25 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) that form the second data release (DR2) of the EPTA and investigate the effect of incorporating low-frequency data from the Indian PTA collaboration. We use enterprise and temponest packages to compare noise models with those reported with the EPTA DR1. We find that, while in some pulsars we can successfully disentangle chromatic from achromatic noise owing to the wider frequency coverage in DR2, in others the noise models evolve in a more complicated way. We also find evidence of long-term scattering variations in PSR J1600$-$3053. Through our simulations, we identify intrinsic biases in our current noise analysis techniques and discuss their effect on GWB searches. Two types of ISS phenomena (intensity scintillation and pulse broadening) are caused by electron density fluctuations on small scales (< 0.01 AU). Theory predicts that these are related, and both have been widely employed to study the properties of the IISM. Larger scales ($\sim$1-100\,AU) cause measurable changes in dispersion and these can be correlated with ISS observations to estimate the fluctuation spectrum over a very wide scale range. IISM measurements can often be modeled by a homogeneous power-law spatial spectrum of electron density with the Kolmogorov ($-11/3$) spectral exponent. Here we aim to test the validity of using the Kolmogorov exponent with PSR~J0826+2637. We do so using observations of intensity scintillation, pulse broadening and dispersion variations across a wide fractional bandwidth (20 -- 180\,MHz). We present that the frequency dependence of the intensity scintillation in the high frequency band matches the expectations of a Kolmogorov spectral exponent but the pulse broadening in the low frequency band does not change as rapidly as predicted with this assumption. We show that this behavior is due to an inhomogeneity in the scattering region, specifically that the scattering is dominated by a region of transverse size $\sim$40\,AU. Abstract: International audience; In this study, X-ray laminography is used to monitor the evolution of a model 3D packed bed porous medium on a chip (micromodels) undergoing reactive flows. The obtained 3D images are used to compute the fluid flow patterns and develop insights into dissolution mechanisms. This study is a first proof of concept study, with controlled micromodels, and could later be extended towards deeper understanding of the dissolution and precipitation processes occurring in porous media at the microscale, mechanisms which are relevant to many industrial areas including catalysis, geochemistry, energy, and waste storage in deep geological formations, etc.

Abstract: Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter data are used to investigate the radial evolution of magnetic turbulence between $0.06 ~ \lesssim R ~\lesssim 1$ au. The spectrum is studied as a function of scale, normalized to the ion inertial scale $d_{i}$. In the vicinity of the Sun, the inertial range is limited to a narrow range of scales and exhibits a power-law exponent of, $\alpha_{B} = -3/2$, independent of plasma parameters. The inertial range grows with distance, progressively extending to larger spatial scales, while steepening towards a $\alpha_{B} =-5/3$ scaling. It is observed that spectra for intervals with large magnetic energy excesses and low Alfv\'enic content steepen significantly with distance, in contrast to highly Alfv\'enic intervals that retain their near-Sun scaling. The occurrence of steeper spectra in slower wind streams may be attributed to the observed positive correlation between solar wind speed and Alfv\'enicity., Comment: Accepted to APJ letters with minor revisions

Abstract: We present the results of the search for an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB) at nanohertz frequencies using the second data release of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) for 25 millisecond pulsars and a combination with the first data release of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA). We analysed (i) the full 24.7-year EPTA data set, (ii) its 10.3-year subset based on modern observing systems, (iii) the combination of the full data set with the first data release of the InPTA for ten commonly timed millisecond pulsars, and (iv) the combination of the 10.3-year subset with the InPTA data. These combinations allowed us to probe the contributions of instrumental noise and interstellar propagation effects. With the full data set, we find marginal evidence for a GWB, with a Bayes factor of four and a false alarm probability of $4\%$. With the 10.3-year subset, we report evidence for a GWB, with a Bayes factor of $60$ and a false alarm probability of about $0.1\%$ ($\gtrsim 3\sigma$ significance). The addition of the InPTA data yields results that are broadly consistent with the EPTA-only data sets, with the benefit of better noise modelling. Analyses were performed with different data processing pipelines to test the consistency of the results from independent software packages. The inferred spectrum from the latest EPTA data from new generation observing systems is rather uncertain and in mild tension with the common signal measured in the full data set. However, if the spectral index is fixed at 13/3, the two data sets give a similar amplitude of ($2.5\pm0.7)\times10^{-15}$ at a reference frequency of $1\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. By continuing our detection efforts as part of the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA), we expect to be able to improve the measurement of spatial correlations and better characterise this signal in the coming years., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 4 appendix figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: International audience; Formed through oxidation of underlying primary sulfide- and/or oxide-bearing mineralization, gossans remain a major metallotect for mineral exploration. The identification of gossans within arid regions with ferruginous regolith of different origins is not easy and requires a good knowledge of these superficial red indurated formations on a regional scale. Following this approach, we studied some ferruginous cuirasses in the Khat Oummat Elbid (KOB) region of Inchiri in Mauritania, a region actively prospected for gold and copper in particular. The KOB zone belongs to the orogenic segment of the northern Mauritanides. Two hills with a quartzite basement and capped with ferruginous duricrust were selected for this study. The good outcrop quality made it possible to study the basement, to realize logs across the duricruts and to sample for petrographic, mineralogical (optical microscopy, SEM, DRX) and geochemical (multi-elementary total rock) analyses. The duricrusts are ferricretes in the strict sense with no direct link to the development of lateritic profiles. The quarzitic basement contributes only by producing a coarse clastic fraction at the base of the ferricretes. The cement of the ferricretes is goethitic at the base in between the quartzite clasts while the top is marked by very fine grain sizes and dominant authigenic processes (nodules and pisolites with cortex of goethite and hematite). From the base to the top of the ferricretes, rounded ilmenite grains accompanied by small quartz grains suggest aeolian transport “sprinkling” this material from external sources. These ferricretes are therefore characterized by significant mechanical and chemical allochthonies, the source of Fe in solution such as grains of ilmenite being difficult to trace with certainty in this region. The comparison with average contents of major and trace elements of gossans, lateritic cuirasses and bog ore shows that whole rock geochemistry can be used to discriminate KOB ferricretes from gossans at first-order, but that databases should be implemented with analyzes of gossans developing above iron-oxides-copper-gold deposits such as those exploited in Inchiri ( e.g. the Guelb-Moghrein deposit, near Akjoujt).; -Les chapeaux de fer (ou gossans) développés à l'aplomb d'une minéralisation sulfurée et/ou oxydée primaire restent un métallotecte majeur pour l'exploration minière. L'identification de gossans au sein de régions arides à régolithe ferrugineux de différentes origines n'est pas aisée et suppose une bonne connaissance de ces formations superficielles indurées rouges à l'échelle régionale. En s'inscrivant dans cette démarche, nous avons étudié certaines cuirasses ferrugineuses de la région de Khat Oummat Elbid (KOB) d'Inchiri en Mauritanie, région activement prospectée pour l'or et le cuivre en particulier. La zone de KOB appartient au segment orogénique des Mauritanides septentrionales. Deux collines à socle de quartzite et coiffées de cuirasses ferrugineuses ont été sélectionnées pour cette étude. Les campagnes de terrain ont permis d'étudier le socle, de lever des logs dans les cuirasses et d'échantillonner pour des analyses pétrographiques, minéralogiques (microscopie optique, MEB, DRX) et géochimiques (multi-élémentaire roches totales). Il apparaît que les cuirasses étudiées sont des ferricrètes au sens strict sans lien direct avec le développement de profils latéritiques. Le socle quartzitique contribue uniquement en produisant une fraction clastique grossière à la base des ferricrètes. Le ciment des ferricrètes est goethitique à la base entre les clastes de quartzite tandis que le sommet est marqué par des granulométries très fines et des processus authigéniques dominants (nodules et pisolithes à cortex de goethite et hématite). De la base au sommet des ferricrètes, des grains d'ilménite arrondis accompagnés de grains de quartz de petite taille suggèrent un transport éolien « saupoudrant » ce matériel depuis des sources externes. Ces ferricrètes sont donc caractérisés par des allochtonies mécaniques et chimiques importantes, la source du Fe en solution comme des grains d'ilménite étant difficilement traçable avec certitude dans cette région. La comparaison avec des teneurs moyennes en éléments majeurs et traces de gossans, cuirasses latéritiques et minerai de Fe des tourbières (« bog ore ») montre que la géochimie en roche totale est utilisable pour discriminer les ferricrètes de KOB des gossans au premier ordre, mais qu'il convient d'implémenter les bases de données avec des analyses de gossans se développant au-dessus de gisements de type iron-oxides-copper-gold deposits comme ceux exploités en Inchiri (e.g. gisement de Guelb-Moghrein, près d'Akjoujt).

Abstract: The European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) and Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) collaborations have measured a low-frequency common signal in the combination of their second and first data releases respectively, with the correlation properties of a gravitational wave background (GWB). Such signal may have its origin in a number of physical processes including a cosmic population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs); inflation, phase transitions, cosmic strings and tensor mode generation by non-linear evolution of scalar perturbations in the early Universe; oscillations of the Galactic potential in the presence of ultra-light dark matter (ULDM). At the current stage of emerging evidence, it is impossible to discriminate among the different origins. Therefore, in this paper, we consider each process separately, and investigate the implications of the signal under the hypothesis that it is generated by that specific process. We find that the signal is consistent with a cosmic population of inspiralling SMBHBs, and its relatively high amplitude can be used to place constraints on binary merger timescales and the SMBH-host galaxy scaling relations. If this origin is confirmed, this is the first direct evidence that SMBHBs merge in nature, adding an important observational piece to the puzzle of structure formation and galaxy evolution. As for early Universe processes, the measurement would place tight constraints on the cosmic string tension and on the level of turbulence developed by first-order phase transitions. Other processes would require non-standard scenarios, such as a blue-tilted inflationary spectrum or an excess in the primordial spectrum of scalar perturbations at large wavenumbers. Abstract: Pulsar timing arrays offer a probe of the low-frequency gravitational wave spectrum (1 - 100 nanohertz), which is intimately connected to a number of markers that can uniquely trace the formation and evolution of the Universe. We present the dataset and the results of the timing analysis from the second data release of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA). The dataset contains high-precision pulsar timing data from 25 millisecond pulsars collected with the five largest radio telescopes in Europe, as well as the Large European Array for Pulsars. The dataset forms the foundation for the search for gravitational waves by the EPTA, presented in associated papers. We describe the dataset and present the results of the frequentist and Bayesian pulsar timing analysis for individual millisecond pulsars that have been observed over the last ~25 years. We discuss the improvements to the individual pulsar parameter estimates, as well as new measurements of the physical properties of these pulsars and their companions. This data release extends the dataset from EPTA Data Release 1 up to the beginning of 2021, with individual pulsar datasets with timespans ranging from 14 to 25 years. These lead to improved constraints on annual parallaxes, secular variation of the orbital period, and Shapiro delay for a number of sources. Abstract: International audience; Bioturbation by termites is considered a key process in the regulation of soil properties in tropical soils. The concentration of clay and the presence of 2:1 clay minerals in termite-soil are usually explained by the need of termites to build stable biogenic structures and/or to have access to water only available in the lower soil layers. However, while these hypotheses are attractive, they do not always offer a sufficient explanation for understanding termite bioturbation behavior. Here, we used ecological stoichiometry theory to propose a third hypothesis: that bioturbation can also be explained by the limitation of termites for Na +. This chemical element is missing from the vegetation consumed by termites, while it plays an important role in the regulation of termites' physiological processes. In old and highly weathered soils, such as those found in the tropics, a significant source of Na + for termites likely comes from 2:1 minerals, which are only available in the deeper soil layers. Therefore, this article aims to propose the hypothesis of the use of bioturbation by termites as a means to fulfil their need for Na +. The impacts of this ecological process on ecosystem functioning and soil fertility are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Gold-(I) catalysis was used for the intramolecular cyclization of tertiary alcohols with terminal alkynes to form diverse aza-spirocycles. The reaction was carried out with low catalyst loading under microwave irradiation to give both sulfonylated and acylated spirocyclic nitrogen derivatives. Gram scale spirocyclization was carried out and demonstrates the robustness of the reaction. An intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck reaction was performed to give several tetracyclic spirocycles. Double bond reduction and selective protecting group manipulation gave spiropiperazine and spiromorpholine derivatives. These compounds were incorporated into biologically relevant scaffolds to give the first selective spirocyclic inhibitors of LIMK.

Abstract: 22 pages, 30 réf.; We illustrate with several new applications the power and elegance of the Bendixson–Dulac theorem to obtain upper bounds of the number of limit cycles for several families of planar vector fields. In some cases we propose to use a function related with the curvature of the orbits of the vector field as a Dulac function. We get some general results for Li´enard type equations and for rigid planar systems. We also present a remarkable phenomenon: for each integer m ≥ 2, we provide a simple 1-parametric differential system for which we prove that it has limit cycles only for the values of the parameter in a subset of an interval of length smaller that 3√2(3/m)m/2 that decreases exponentially when m grows. One of the strengths of the results presented in this work is that although they are obtained with simple calculations, that can be easily checked by hand, they improve and extend previous studies. Another one is that, for certain systems, it is possible to reduce the question of the number of limit cycles to the study of the shape of a planar curve and the sign of an associated function in one or two variables.

We used the second data release of the 144 MHz LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey to produce circularly polarised maps with a median noise of 140 µJy beam−1 and resolution of 20″ for ≈27% of the northern sky (5634 deg2). The leakage of total intensity into circular polarisation is measured to be ≈0.06%, and our survey is complete at flux densities ≥1 mJy. A detection is considered reliable when the circularly polarised fraction exceeds 1%. We find the population of circularly polarised sources is composed of four distinct classes: stellar systems, pulsars, active galactic nuclei, and sources unidentified in the literature. The stellar systems can be further separated into chromospherically active stars, M dwarfs, and brown dwarfs. Based on the circularly polarised fraction and lack of an optical counterpart, we show it is possible to infer whether the unidentified sources are likely unknown pulsars or brown dwarfs. Abstract: International audience; The Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) plays an important role in innate immunity by inducing type I interferons in response to sensing viral or bacterial cytosolic DNA. Cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs) are known to activate STING. Here, we describe the synthesis and biological evaluation of two new 3’,3’-CDN, in which the internucleotide linkages were replaced, respectively, by a 1,2,3-triazole moiety (as more stable isosteres of phosphate linkers) and an unsaturated carbon chain (as flexibility can led to crucial binding affinity and specificity). Abstract: Short communication 7 p.; International audience; Aging is a multifactorial process that affects the entire organism by cumulative alterations. Visual function impairments that go along with aging are commonly observed, causing lower visual acuity, lower contrast sensitivity, and impaired dark adaptation. Electroretinogram analysis revealed that the amplitudes of rod- and cone-mediated responses are reduced in aged mice and humans. Reports suggested that age-related changes observed in both rod and cone photoreceptor functionality were linked to oxidative stress regulation or free radical production homeostasis. Interestingly, several recent reports linked the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) cellular activity with oxidative stress regulation in several tissue including brain tissue where FMRP participates to the response to stress via protein translation in neurite or is involved in free radical production and abnormal glutathione homeostasis. Based on these recent literatures, we raised the question about the effect of FMRP absence in the aging retina of Fmr1(-/y) compared to their WT littermates.
