Abstract

This is a new era for emerging businesses across the globe. Advancements in the technology field and its applications have resulted in new businesses that bring new challenges. Innovations are also responsible for developing new business models by formulating new different strategies, expanding business base etc. One of the new business models are the formation of start-ups. Start-ups emerge from innovative ideas, encouragement from government policies, opportunities for self-employment, etc. Start-ups can be opened in any of the economic sectors (Aldrich, 1990). In India, Bengaluru is considered the start-up capital. Women's empowerment is one of the important economic objectives of many of these start-ups. Start-ups founded by women not only create jobs for others but also boosts their morale and entrepreneurship abilities. The present study focuses on start-ups formed by women in Bengaluru. This paper aims to find the factors that encourage start-ups and the challenges that women face in setting up start-ups in Bengaluru. It analyzes the operational efficiency of these startups. The researchers conducted a cross-sectional survey through in-depth interviews of 20 women entrepreneurs who set up new businesses in the last 2 years. Convenient sampling method was used to select the sample. Thematic content analysis with some grounded theory was used to analyze the data. NVivo12 Pro software was used for the qualitative data analysis. The results indicate that the Covid-19 pandemic affected operations and setting up of start-ups by women in Bengaluru. 2. An Optimized Deep Ensemble Super-Learner Model For Thyroid Disease Classification.

Abstract

Early detection of thyroid diseases is crucial to mitigate severe consequences. various Artificial Intelligence (AI) models have been developed to identify and classify thyroid diseases. But, certain models that rely on a single classifier often suffer from high prediction errors and lower generalizability and accuracy. To solve this, Optimized Deep Ensemble Super-Learner Model (ODESLM) is developed for thyroid disease prediction. In this method, Deep Ensemble Super-Learner Model (DESLM) is designed for feature selection tasks with six base learners like Support Vector Machine (SVM), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (Bi-GRU). The Super Learner Model (SLM) optimally combines and weights the predictions of base models to minimize the overall prediction error. The ensemble method uses resampling or reweighting to build a stacked model to capture capturing diverse patterns for enhancing the accuracy of thyroid disease identification. The Output values of DESLM is optimized using Secretary Bird Optimization Algorithm (SBOA) which is inspired by secretary Birds' foraging behavior to avoid incorrect classifier selection in training datasets. SBOA refines training datasets, optimizes hyperparameters and identifies relevant features from base models to enhance the superlearner's performance. It adjusts model weights and parameters to balance bias and variance enhancing generalization and reducing overfitting. This optimized ensemble model improves accuracy on larger datasets with lowers predictive error in thyroid disease prediction. Experimental results show that proposed model achieves 92.73% accuracy on the thyroid disease dataset, outperforming traditional models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Despite advances in surgery and pharmacotherapy, there remains significant residual ischemic risk after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. Methods: In REDUCE-IT (Reduction of Cardiovascular Events With Icosapent Ethyl–Intervention Trial), a multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial, statin-treated patients with controlled low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and mild to moderate hypertriglyceridemia were randomized to 4 g daily of icosapent ethyl or placebo. They experienced a 25% reduction in risk of a primary efficacy end point (composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularization, or hospitalization for unstable angina) and a 26% reduction in risk of a key secondary efficacy end point (composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke) when compared with placebo. The current analysis reports on the subgroup of patients from the trial with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting. Results: Of the 8179 patients randomized in REDUCE-IT, a total of 1837 (22.5%) had a history of coronary artery bypass grafting, with 897 patients randomized to icosapent ethyl and 940 to placebo. Baseline characteristics were similar between treatment groups. Randomization to icosapent ethyl was associated with a significant reduction in the primary end point (hazard ratio [HR], 0.76 [95% CI, 0.63–0.92]; P =0.004), in the key secondary end point (HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.56–0.87]; P =0.001), and in total (first plus subsequent or recurrent) ischemic events (rate ratio, 0.64 [95% CI, 0.50–0.81]; P =0.0002) compared with placebo. This yielded an absolute risk reduction of 6.2% (95% CI, 2.3%–10.2%) in first events, with a number needed to treat of 16 (95% CI, 10–44) during a median follow-up time of 4.8 years. Safety findings were similar to the overall study: beyond an increased rate of atrial fibrillation/flutter requiring hospitalization for at least 24 hours (5.0% vs 3.1%; P =0.03) and a nonsignificant increase in bleeding, occurrences of adverse events were comparable between groups. Conclusions: In REDUCE-IT patients with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting, treatment with icosapent ethyl was associated with significant reductions in first and recurrent ischemic events. Issues of sexual orientation are relevant to multiple levels of the school community, including students, school professionals, and schools as institutions. School counselors, with their developmental training, systems perspective, and commitment to diversity, are uniquely positioned to be leaders in efforts not only to provide support for students engaged in the process of recognizing and accepting their own sexual identities, but also to promote more sophisticated dialogue about issues of sexual orientation in schools. This article presents a three-tiered action plan that will provide school counselors with tools necessary to address the issue of sexual orientation in their schools.

Abstract

Systemic chemotherapy is increasingly being used with radiotherapy for the radical treatment of advanced head and neck cancers. Chemotherapy offers modest benefits in the metastatic setting. Platinum containing agents are the most active drugs and form the mainstay of most chemotherapy schedules. In recent years taxanes have shown activity in head and neck cancers and are being -incorporated into neo-adjuvant and concomitant chemotherapy regimens. Targeted agents and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors, like cetuximab, in particular, have shown benefit in the metastatic and the concomitant setting. EGFR inhibitors and other targeted agents form the thrust of pre-clinical and clinical research into the systemic treatment of head and neck cancers.

Abstract

The marine environment is a rich resource for isolating exploited microorganisms. In recent years, antibiotics have become important in this study of new antibiotics that show antiviral, anticoagulant and cardiac properties. Soil samples were collected from different area and isolated the bacterial colonies were separately streaking in agar plates (KP1, KP3, KP6, KP7 and KP9). The bacteria were done by morphology characteristic after that bacterial crude extract was taken separately. The crude extract was used in antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria. There KP 7 and KP 9 havethe highest activity in B. subtilis and S. pyogenes rest of the samples also had activity comparing to these samples (KP 7 and KP 9) is highest zone inhibition developing. Abstract

Extracts of natural products, especially microorganisms, have been a valuable source of various molecules in many drug discovery efforts and led to the discovery of many important drugs. The identification of microbial strains with promising biological activities and the purification of biomolecules responsible for activities led to the discovery of many biologically active molecules.Crude extracts of two marine bacterial isolates isolated from marine sediment samples, were studied for their in vitro anticancer activity against human oral squamous carcinoma (KB) cell line. Morphological studies and biochemical tests of the two bacterial extracts were also carried out. Cytotoxic, intracellular ROS, nuclear staining and apoptotic morphological alteration studies were carried out to assess the anticancer potential of each extract. The crude ethyl acetate extract of KP-9 isolate showed promising results by MTT assay with IC50 as low as 7.9 μg/ml while as KP-7 showed an IC50 value of 21.1μg/ml in KB cells. The crude extract of KP-9 augmented higher levels of ROS and displayed higher potential by inducing higher levels of nuclear and morphological alterations when compared with KP-7 bacterial extract in KB cells.

Abstract

Abstract Background Rates of labour induction are increasing. We conducted this systematic review to assess the evidence supporting use of each method of labour induction. Methods We listed methods of labour induction then reviewed the evidence supporting each. We searched MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library between 1980 and November 2010 using multiple terms and combinations, including labor, induced/or induction of labor, prostaglandin or prostaglandins, misoprostol, Cytotec, 16,16,-dimethylprostaglandin E2 or E2, dinoprostone; Prepidil, Cervidil, Dinoprost, Carboprost or hemabate; prostin, oxytocin, misoprostol, membrane sweeping or membrane stripping, amniotomy, balloon catheter or Foley catheter, hygroscopic dilators, laminaria, dilapan, saline injection, nipple stimulation, intercourse, acupuncture, castor oil, herbs. We performed a best evidence review of the literature supporting each method. We identified 2048 abstracts and reviewed 283 full text articles. We preferentially included high quality systematic reviews or large randomised trials. Where no such studies existed, we included the best evidence available from smaller randomised or quasi-randomised trials. Results We included 46 full text articles. We assigned a quality rating to each included article and a strength of evidence rating to each body of literature. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and vaginal misoprostol were more effective than oxytocin in bringing about vaginal delivery within 24 hours but were associated with more uterine hyperstimulation. Mechanical methods reduced uterine hyperstimulation compared with PGE2 and misoprostol, but increased maternal and neonatal infectious morbidity compared with other methods. Membrane sweeping reduced post-term gestations. Most included studies were too small to evaluate risk for rare adverse outcomes. Conclusions Research is needed to determine benefits and harms of many induction methods.

Abstract

HIV/AIDS spread has opened a Pandora of medical and health problems apart from creating serious socio-psychological trauma for the victims and their families. Despite the governmental effort to curve the growing infection, very little success has been achieved. The northeastern region of India presents a very peculiar situation due to recurrent insurgency in all its states for long time and thus it became instrumental in paralyzing the social and health machineries to an extent, which still deteriorated the futile national effort to check the deadly infection. The study tried to understand the level of awareness and correct knowledge among the underprivileged scheduled tribes and scheduled castes women in the age group 15 - 44 by exploring data from district level of Rapid Household Reproductive and Child Health Project Phase I (1998) and Phase II (1999) for Assam, Manipur and Nagaland and suggested a strategy to control the infection in the region. It is found that HIV/AIDS awareness was 59% among the women in all the three states with very few among them who had correct understanding of its prevention. A pronounced difference in the level of awareness was observed with respect to age, economy and residential status of the respondents.

The spurt in contraceptive technology particularly in spacing methods has opened up a wide variety of contraceptive choice for the potential user all over the world. India inspite of having national programs for family planning for long could not make proper use of the same. Sterilization still today remains the mainstay of the program. The current use of spacing methods in India is 7%. People still today are unaware of the importance of use and effectiveness of the spacing methods. Add to this the family planning delivery system is also not completely successful in reaching the methods to the target population and failed to achieve its goal to provide planned family to the nation. Under this situation the Indian population is far away and could not make use of the spurt in the contraceptive technology. Rigorous IEC on family planning, promoting spacing methods (introducing the use effectiveness of the new methods) and consolidating the national programme on family welfare and strengthening the outreach services can bring better results.

Abstract

The presence of phytochemicals and the medicinal value of the Ayurvedic medicinal plant Karunthakali or Karimthakali (Solanum rubrum Mill) is investigated in detail for the first time, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Phytochemical compounds are identified from the samples extracted from the leaf, root and seed of the plant, using standard methods. The ash values of the plant leaf are obtained. Alkaloids, flavanoids, anthronol glycosides, terpenes, carbohydrates, saponins and proteins are found present in this plant parts. Tanins, Free amino acids, Free Anthroquinone and Cartenoids are absent in this plant. Presence of high mineral content is the unique identification observed in this plant. The preliminary investigation of phytochemical study of this plant confirms qualitatively its antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiarrhoel, anthelmintic and anticancer activity.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Tribal men's reluctance in sharing responsibilities as supportive partners in reproductive and sexual health matters debar women from their sexual rights coupled with their negligence in health care and lesser utilization of reproductive health facilities. As a matter of fact a large proportion of ill health particularly related to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) suffered not only by men but also by their spouses. The present study was planned among one of the primitive tribes of Madhya Pradesh to understand the knowledge of males about reproductive tract infection (RTI)/STI/HIV/AIDS, RTI symptoms suffered, perception on sexual health, utilization of health services and to improve the knowledge by intervention of need based IEC (information, education, communication) strategy. Method: The study was conducted among 400 currently married men in the age group of 15-40 yr in one of the primitive tribes, Baigas of Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh. Eighteen villages were explored in the study. The IEC intervention was made by using quasi-experimental before and after with control design. Result: The baseline data generated indicated that Baigas male were poorly informed about RTI (18%), STI (21.5%) and HIV/AIDS (10%). Further, men also projected misconception on different aspects of sexuality. Women's views recorded also suggested a disturbing trend regarding male involvement in reproductive health particularly related to STIs. Interpretation & conclusions: After intervention of IEC targeting male population in age group 15 - 40 yr by adopting a before and after with controls design the awareness was improved significantly. The utilization of the health services was also improved significantly. The study recommends replication of the IEC strategy designed in other Baiga villages for improving the reproductive health of the tribe.

Abstract

The health of Indian women is intrinsically linked to their status in society. Research into Indian women's status has found that their family contributions are often overlooked and they are likely to be regarded as an economic burden, especially in rural areas. This attitude has a negative impact on their health status. Poor health has repercussions not only for women, but also for their children and other family members. This commentary focuses on the trend in five key women's issues in India: maternal and child health; violence against women; nutritional status; unequal treatment of girls and boys; and care quality. The discussion is based on data extracted from Indian National Family Health Surveys (NFHS-1, NFHS-2 NFHS-3) spanning the period 1993-2006, and data from the Indian Sample Registration System and National Crime Research Bureau.

Abstract

The multifunctional and androgen-regulated epididymis is known to provide a conducive microenvironment for the maturation and storage of mature spermatozoa. HOXB2 homeodomain-containing epididymis-specific sperm protein (HOXBES2), a molecule first reported by our group, exhibits cell- and region-specific expression. It was found in the cytoplasm of the principal epithelial cells with maximum in the distal segments of the rat epididymis. The present study was undertaken to determine whether HOXBES2 expression is regulated by androgens and postnatal epididymal development. Toward this, the epididymis was disallowed access to circulating androgens either by chemical or biologic castration. In bilaterally orchidectomized animals, the levels of immunoreactive HOXBES2 declined to5 % of those seen in sham-operated animals. Exogenous dihydrotestosterone (DHT) supplementation (250 microg/kg body weight) for 7 days restored the expression levels toor= 90 % of that observed in intact animals. Ethylene dimethane sulfonate (EDS) administration completely abolished HOXBES2 expression in the epididymis, and supplementation with DHT or DHT + estradiol for 10 days re-established HOXBES2 expression to near normalcy. However, in the estradiol alone-supplemented EDS-treated group, HOXBES2 remained undetected. The unaltered HOXBES2 expression following efferent duct ligation suggested that HOXBES2 is not critically dependent on testicular factors. During postnatal development, protein expression in the epididymis begins to appear from day 40 and 50 and increased from day 60 onward, coinciding with the mature levels of circulating androgens and the well-differentiated epididymis. Thus, the data obtained from this study suggests that HOXBES2 expression could be regulated by androgens, and its expression level is closely associated with the postnatal development of the epididymis.

The state of Karnataka is blessed with rich biodiversity that has ten agro climatic zones and nine types of soil. This is the only state having more varieties in the growth of fruits . Karnataka has emerged as the new destination for food processing industries. Changes in lifestyles, income consumerism, technology has led to the establishment of food processing industry and food parks in the country. Food parks and food processing are considered as the emerging industrial units that would not only create employment but would also be a value addition to economic development. Under the 10th five year plan scheme, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India encourages public private partnership that would inject investment in setting up food parks. Therefore the present paper attempts to understand the importance of public private partnership and food parks in the state. The state Government has encouraged private players to support and establish food parks as these private players are more technically efficient, provide better infrastructure and attract investment in the food sector. The Government has promoted special purpose vehicle (SPV), Food Karnataka Ltd (FKL) in 2004 to attract private investments in food parks across the state. It has been observed that Karnataka is one of the top ranked states to adopt public private partnership (PPP) in meeting its infrastructure requirements, technological up gradation and investment to achieve faster industrial progress. The food processing industry ranks fifth in terms of production and exports. Thus, this paper is a study about the importance of public private partnership(PPP) and food parks in Karnataka in contributing towards the development of the economy as the food processing industry is considered as a 'sunrise industry'. BACKGROUND Maternal smoking has been associated with decreased risk of preeclampsia; however, it is uncertain whether this association is causal. An argument for causality would be strengthened if changes in smoking status across consecutive pregnancies were related to the risk of preeclampsia. METHODS We used data from the National Swedish Birth Register to ascertain the associations between changes in smoking status during the first two successive pregnancies and risk of preeclampsia in the second pregnancy in 371,627 women between 1992 and 2006. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS Compared to women who did not smoke in either pregnancy, the risk of preeclampsia was reduced in women who smoked in both pregnancies (adjusted OR = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.47, 0.63), in those who only smoked in second pregnancy (OR = 0.76; 95% CI = 0.58, 0.99) and, to a lesser extent, in women who smoked only in the first pregnancy (OR = 0.81; 95% CI = 0.70, 0.94). History of preeclampsia in the first pregnancy did not substantially modify these associations. CONCLUSION These data add support to a causal interpretation of the observed inverse association between smoking during pregnancy and risk of preeclampsia.

Abstract

Systemic chemotherapy is increasingly being used with radiotherapy for the radical treatment of advanced head and neck cancers. Chemotherapy offers modest benefits in the metastatic setting. Platinum containing agents are the most active drugs and form the mainstay of most chemotherapy schedules. In recent years taxanes have shown activity in head and neck cancers and are being -incorporated into neo-adjuvant and concomitant chemotherapy regimens. Targeted agents and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors, like cetuximab, in particular, have shown benefit in the metastatic and the concomitant setting. EGFR inhibitors and other targeted agents form the thrust of pre-clinical and clinical research into the systemic treatment of head and neck cancers.

Abstract

Issues of sexual orientation are relevant to multiple levels of the school community, including students, school professionals, and schools as institutions. School counselors, with their developmental training, systems perspective, and commitment to diversity, are uniquely positioned to be leaders in efforts not only to provide support for students engaged in the process of recognizing and accepting their own sexual identities, but also to promote more sophisticated dialogue about issues of sexual orientation in schools. This article presents a three-tiered action plan that will provide school counselors with tools necessary to address the issue of sexual orientation in their schools.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Tribal men's reluctance in sharing responsibilities as supportive partners in reproductive and sexual health matters debar women from their sexual rights coupled with their negligence in health care and lesser utilization of reproductive health facilities. As a matter of fact a large proportion of ill health particularly related to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) suffered not only by men but also by their spouses. The present study was planned among one of the primitive tribes of Madhya Pradesh to understand the knowledge of males about reproductive tract infection (RTI)/STI/ HIV/AIDS, RTI symptoms suffered, perception on sexual health, utilization of health services and to improve the knowledge by intervention of need based IEC (information, education, communication) strategy. Method: The study was conducted among 400 currently married men in the age group of 15-40 yr in one of the primitive tribes, Baigas of Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh. Eighteen villages were explored in the study. The IEC intervention was made by using quasi-experimental before and after with control design. Result: The baseline data generated indicated that Baigas male were poorly informed about RTI (18%), STI (21.5%) and HIV/AIDS (10%). Further, men also projected misconception on different aspects of sexuality. Women's views recorded also suggested a disturbing trend regarding male involvement in reproductive health particularly related to STIs. Interpretation & conclusions: After intervention of IEC targeting male population in age group 15 - 40 yr by adopting a before and after with controls design the awareness was improved significantly. The utilization of the health services was also improved significantly. The study recommends replication of the IEC strategy designed in other Baiga villages for improving the reproductive health of the tribe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
