Tripodal donor‐acceptor (D‐A) small molecules Tr‐Np3 and Tr‐T‐Np3 consisting of triphenyl triazine and 1,8‐naphthalimide, without and with a thiophene spacer have been synthesized. Their optical and redox properties were thoroughly investigated along with their utilization as photocatalysts in organic transformations. Compounds Tr‐Np3 and Tr‐T‐Np3 showed broad absorption in the range of 290–480 nm in solutions and 300–510 nm in thin films. These tripodal molecules displayed wide optical bandgaps of (Egopt) 3.10 eV and 2.64 eV with very deep‐lying HOMO energy levels (−6.60 eV and −6.03 eV) and low‐lying LUMO levels (−3.50 eV and −3.40 eV). Appreciable electron mobilities of 5.24×10−4 cm2/Vs and 6.14×10−4 cm2/Vs were obtained for compounds Tr‐Np3 and Tr‐T‐Np3 respectively by space‐charge limited current (SCLC) measurements. Metal‐free tripodal molecules Tr‐Np3 and Tr‐T‐Np3 showed excellent photocatalytic abilities towards condensation of aromatic aldehydes and o‐phenylenediamine followed by cyclization under visible light to yield benzimidazole derivatives that are of high medicinal value. Recently developed C10‐(H)‐arylated‐N‐(pyren‐1yl)‐picolinamide compounds have been investigated spectroscopically for their photophysical properties and metal ion sensing abilities. Two sets of regioisomers were selected based on their molar absorptivities and fluorescence quantum yields and classified into two series I methoxy group at meta‐ and para‐ position of phenyl ring, and series II methyl group at meta‐ and para‐ position of phenyl ring. Additionally, for better understanding on structure‐property relationship, a comparison study with C‐10 unsubstituted compound was also conducted. All compounds exhibited characteristic absorption and emission responses only towards Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions among all the screened metals. While the reference compound and those with methoxy substituent displayed a fluorescence turn‐off behaviour, compounds with methyl groups showed fluorescence turn‐on response through excimer formation at ∼550 nm in the presence of Cu2+ and Fe3+. Sensing studies were performed to elucidate structure‐property relationship and to obtain limits of detection, binding constants and fluorescence quenching constants. Three grades of pectin xanthates (PX1, PX2, and PX3) have been prepared by the reaction of pectin with carbon disulfide (CS2) in an alkaline medium using NaOH, via the xanthation process. The percentage yield of prepared pectin xanthates has been found to be 87.06%, 90.38%, and 93.80% for PX1, PX2, and PX3, respectively. Prepared pectin xanthates and raw pectin were utilized for heavy metals (Cu(II) and Ni(II)) and lignin enriched paper industry wastewater (LEPIW) treatment. The removal percentage of pectin, PX1, P X2, and PX3 for Cu removal at optimum condition (adsorbent dose: 5.14 g/L, pH: 5 for Cu and 7 for Ni, optimum temperature: 50°C and time: 80 min for Cu(II) and 100 min for Ni(II)) has been found as 85%, 92.33%, 93.5%, and 94.66% and 76.66%, 89.44%, 91.66%, and 93.33%, respectively, for Ni removal. The LEPIW treatment efficacy for pectin, PX1, PX2, and PX3 has been found to be 54%, 77%, 83%, and 86% for the initial COD: 2000 mg/L, pH: 7, optimum temperature: 40°C in 105 min operation time. Adsorption isotherm studies suggest that Langmuir isotherm is most appropriate which indicates adsorption follows chemisorption. The adsorption capacities of PX1, PX2, and PX3 are found as 309.59, 352.11, and 380.22 mg/g for Cu(II) and 299.40, 315.45, and 328.94 mg/g and for Ni(II), respectively, which is very high in comparison with many other recent literature studies. Regioisomeric acceptor‐donor (AD) molecular rotors (p‐AD, m‐AD and m‐ADA) were synthesized and characterized, wherein dyads p‐AD and m‐AD, and triad m‐ADA contained 4,4‐difluoro‐4‐bora‐3a,4a‐diaza‐s‐indacene (BODIPY) and benzodithiophene (BDT) as electron‐acceptor and electron‐donor, respectively. In all the compounds, the donor and acceptor moieties are electronically decoupled by a phenyl spacer, either through a para coupling or through a meta coupling. The dyad counterparts p‐AD and m‐AD showed distinct photophysical characteristics in which dyad p‐AD showed TICT band at ca. 654 nm characterized by a Stokes shift of ca. 150 nm and prominent solvatochromism. However, meta regioisomeric triad m‐ADA showed well‐defined aggregation in solution. Notably, because of the temperature‐tunable and solvent‐viscosity‐dependent emission, efficient ratiometric temperature sensing with positive and negative temperature coefficients and viscosity sensing was observed for all compounds. Interestingly, the fluorescence of dyad m‐AD (in 10/90 v/v THF/water) revealed a near‐white light emission with CIE chromaticity coordinates (x, y) of (0.32, 0.29). Furthermore, the fluorescence emission of p‐AD in THF at 0 °C also showed a near‐white light emission with chromaticity coordinates (x, y) of (0.34, 0.27). Such multifunctional rotors with readily tunable emission in the red region and prominent temperature‐ and viscosity‐sensing abilities are promising for sensing and bioimaging applications.
