We propose and demonstrate a simple all-optic control for Si photonics using a photo-thermal heater. The control light is absorbed in a heavily doped control waveguide and the signal light phase is tuned through thermal diffusion in a signal waveguide adjacent to but not optically coupled with the control waveguide. We designed and fabricated Mach–Zehnder- and microring-type devices requiring 17 (π-phase shift) and 4 (switching between resonance and non-resonance with 6 dB extinction) mW of control power, respectively. We confirmed that the heating efficiency of all-optic control exceeded that of an electrical heater placed above the signal waveguide.

We developed a thermo-optically controlled nonmechanical optical beam scanner using a Si photonic crystal slow-light waveguide with a diffraction grating to achieve on-chip light detection and ranging (LIDAR). This Letter applies pre-emphasis signals to the thermo-optic control, and the cutoff frequency increases to 500 kHz. Observing the beam scanning in the space-time domain showed that the turn-on and turn-off times of the scanner for a rectangular drive voltage were 10 µs and reduced to 2.7 µs when the pre-emphasis signals were optimized. This new, to the best of our knowledge, result enables a frame rate of 29 fps for 12,800 resolution points in LIDAR.

We have developed a nonmechanical beam scanner equipped with a Si photonics slow-light grating toward an on-chip frequency-modulated continuous-wave light detection and ranging (FMCW LIDAR) device. An optical beam is scanned thermo-optically, but it is also shifted sensitively to the frequency modulation, which is inconvenient for FMCW LIDAR. In this study, we canceled this shift and obtained step-like beam scanning with synchronized thermo-optic signals, which was confirmed in space–time-domain beam observations. The step-like scanning allows finer angular resolution of the range profile.

Optical beam scanning is a widely utilized function in optical systems and a compact nonmechanical solid-state device has long been anticipated. Here, we have studied such a device consisting of photonic crystal slow-light waveguides and switch trees, fabricated by a Si photonics process, employing a bespoke prism lens for beam collimation. Further in this study, we particularly demonstrated the operation of the device only by the thermo-optic (TO) tuning of its components, at a fixed wavelength of light. A spot beam of ∼0.1° divergence, was scanned in two dimensions, in the angular range of 40° × 8.8° and average power consumption of < 0.7 W. Neglecting some disordered beams caused by the non-uniformity of the fabricated device, the estimated number of resolution points was 400 × 32 = 12,800, which required a significant effort in the device fabrication and calibration, utilizing optical-phased arrays, if the same performance was targeted.

Synthetic dimensions, which simulate spatial coordinates using non-spatial degrees of freedom, are drawing interest in topological science and other fields for modelling higher-dimensional phenomena on simple structures. We present the first realization of a synthetic frequency dimension on a silicon ring resonator photonic device fabricated using a CMOS process. We confirm that its coupled modes correspond to a 1D tight-binding model through acquisition of up to 280 GHz bandwidth optical frequency comb-like spectra, and by measuring the first synthetic band structures on an integrated device. Furthermore, we realized two types of gauge potentials along the frequency dimension, and probed their effects through the associated band structures. An electric field analogue was produced via modulation detuning, whereas effective magnetic fields were induced using synchronized nearest- and second-nearest-neighbor coupling. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a frequency-modulated continuous-wave light detection and ranging (LiDAR) with a Si photonic crystal beam scanner, simultaneously enabling scanning laser Doppler measurements. This nonmechanical solid-state device can reduce the size of conventional scanning laser Doppler vibrometers, making LiDAR a multimodal imaging sensor, which can measure the distributions of distance, velocity, and vibration frequency. We fabricated this device using Si photonics process and confirmed the expected operations. Distance and velocity resolutions were less than 15 mm and 19 mm/s, respectively. The detection limit of the vibration amplitude determined by the signal-to-noise ratio was 2.5 nm.

The doubly periodic Si photonic crystal waveguide operates as a nonmechanical beam-steering device that can be applied in light detection and ranging. In this Letter, we develop and describe a prism lens that collimates a fan-shaped beam, emitted from the waveguide independent of the steering angle. Its fundamental profile is investigated using a theoretical analysis for thick lenses, and then, its detailed aspherical design is obtained. In ray tracing, this prism lens suppresses the beam divergence to less than the diffraction limit in most of the targeted beam-steering range. The prism lens is fabricated by acrylic cutting, and its expected characteristics are observed.

Refractive index fronts propagating in waveguides are special spatiotemporal perturbations. The interaction of light with such fronts can be described in terms of an indirect transition where the frequency and wavenumber of a guided mode both are changed. In recent years, front-induced transitions have been used in dispersion-engineered waveguides for frequency conversion, optical delays, and bandwidth and pulse duration manipulation. These concepts have originated from different research areas of photonics, such as nonlinear fibre optics, slow-light waveguides, plasma physics, moving media and relativistic effects. We propose an electromagnetic wave imaging system using Si photonics microring modulators (MRMs) as radio over fiber components. In this system, radio frequency signals detected at microwave probes are applied to the connected MRMs; an MRM is tuned to the laser wavelength using the thermo-optic effect to read-out through the optical transmission. By repeating this process for all MRMs and mapping the read-out signals in two dimensions, the distribution of electromagnetic waves can be visualized. Such system operation was demonstrated at 3.5 GHz in a 37.5 × 37.5 mm2 probing area, for which we confirmed the agreement with theoretical simulations.

Significance There are no biomarkers for schizophrenia (SCZ), a disorder of dysfunctional neural networks. We demonstrate that a master regulator of cytoskeleton (“CRMP2”) and, hence, neural circuitry, may form the basis for such a biomarker because its activity is uniquely imbalanced in SCZ patients. We show that SCZ patients are characterized by an excess of active CRMP2 not only in their brains (where it is correlated with dendritic abnormalities) but also in their peripheral blood lymphocytes. The abundance of active CRMP2 and insufficiency of opposing inactive p-CRMP2 likely disrupts neuronal function. Because peripheral blood CRMP2 appears to reflect intracerebral processes, it could form the basis of a rapid, minimally invasive, sensitive, and specific clinical diagnostic aid for SCZ in young patients., There are no validated biomarkers for schizophrenia (SCZ), a disorder linked to neural network dysfunction. We demonstrate that collapsin response mediator protein-2 (CRMP2), a master regulator of cytoskeleton and, hence, neural circuitry, may form the basis for a biomarker because its activity is uniquely imbalanced in SCZ patients. CRMP2’s activity depends upon its phosphorylation state. While an equilibrium between inactive (phosphorylated) and active (nonphosphorylated) CRMP2 is present in unaffected individuals, we show that SCZ patients are characterized by excess active CRMP2. We examined CRMP2 levels first in postmortem brains (correlated with neuronal morphometrics) and then, because CRMP2 is expressed in lymphocytes as well, in the peripheral blood of SCZ patients versus age-matched unaffected controls. Semiconductor ion sensors that respond to the surface electric charge in a solution are used for chemical and biological sensing. Photonic sensors exploiting such a response in the photoluminescence intensity enable a simple system consisting only of a photopump source and a photodiode; however, their sensitivity is usually lower than that of electric sensors, such as ion-sensitive field-effect transistors. This study employed a GaInAsP semiconductor honeycomb photonic crystal slab as a photonic sensor structure and obtained a high ion sensitivity. The surface recombination, which is the origin of the ion sensitivity, was enhanced by increasing the surface-to-volume ratio and moderately suppressing the photopump level. Nevertheless, a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio was maintained by improving the light extraction efficiency. Moreover, a high pH sensitivity of 0.27 dB/pH, which is six times that without photonic crystals, was obtained and resulted in a pH resolution of 0.011 at pH ∼7 comparable with that of electric sensors.

We demonstrate 64 Gbps operation in a compact Si photonic crystal optical modulator that employs meander line electrodes and compensate for the phase mismatch between slow light and RF signals. Although low dispersion slow light increases the modulation efficiency, maintaining a sufficiently wide working spectrum, the phase mismatch becomes a limiting factor on the operation speed even when the phase shifter length is as short as 200 μm. Meander line electrodes broke this limit and enhanced the cutoff frequency by up to 31 and 38 GHz using 50 Ω and 20 Ω termination resistors, respectively. This allowed to use a group index of slow light higher than 20, and greatly improved the quality of the modulation characteristics at 25 and 32 Gbps. Clear open eye was observed even at 40–64 Gbps.

Slow light generated through silicon (Si) photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) is useful for improving the performance of Si photonic devices. However, the accumulation of coupling loss between a PCW and Si optical wiring waveguides is a problem when slow-light devices are connected in a series in a photonic integrated circuit. Previously, we reported a tapered transition structure between these waveguides and observed a coupling loss of 0.46 dB per transition. This Letter employed particle swarm optimization to engineer the arrangement of photonic crystal holes to reduce loss and succeeded in demonstrating theoretical loss value of 0.12 dB on average in the wavelength range of 1540–1560 nm and an experimental one of 0.21 dB. Crucially, this structure enhances the versatility of slow light.

This paper describes a comparison of optical leaky-waveguide antennas, i.e., grating waveguide (GWG), waffle waveguide (WWG), and waffle-iron waveguide (WIWG), using both simulations and measurements. We simulate the antenna characteristics and experimentally confirm the high antenna gain.

For next-era optical interconnects in data centers, development of compact, energy-efficient, low-cost, and high-speed optical transceivers are required, for which high-performance external modulators in silicon photonics will be key components. We present a silicon photonic crystal waveguide slow light Mach-Zehnder modulator suitable for this purpose. The enhancement in the modulation efficiency via the slow light effect reduces the halfwave voltage-length product VπL , maintaining a wide working spectrum over 15 nm. The frequency response of the slow light modulator is constricted by an electrooptic phase mismatch between slow light and RF signals. In this study, this was dramatically improved by matching the phase using meanderline electrodes that delay RF signals. The cutoff frequency was experimentally evaluated to be 32–38 GHz. Using this device, we demonstrated high-speed modulation, including 64-Gbps on-off keying, 100-Gbps pulse amplitude modulation, and 50-Gbps/ch wavelength division multiplexing in 170–200-μm- long devices.

We demonstrate that the lasing wavelength and emission intensity of GaInAsP photonic crystal nanolaser can be controlled by immersing it to an electrolyte and applying a bias voltage. This method gives an option to the control of semiconductor lasers by the iontronic effect.

We demonstrate a nonmechanical, on-chip optical beam-steering device using a photonic-crystal waveguide with a doubly periodic structure that repeats the increase and decrease of the hole diameter. We fabricated the device using a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor process. We obtained a beam-deflection angle of 24° in the longitudinal direction, while maintaining a divergence angle of 0.3°. Four such waveguides were integrated, and one was selected by a Mach–Zehnder optical switch. We obtained lateral beam steering by placing a cylindrical lens above these waveguides. By combining the lateral and longitudinal beam steering, we were able to scan the collimated beam in two dimensions, with 80 × 4 resolution points.

We demonstrate an adiabatic wavelength redshift using dynamic carrier depletion. Free carriers are first induced through two-photon absorption of a control pulse and then extracted by a reverse-biased p-i-n diode formed on a Si photonic crystal waveguide, resulting in rapid carrier depletion. A copropagating signal pulse is redshifted by the consequent increase in refractive index. We experimentally evaluated the dynamics of the carrier depletion by the pump-probe method and explored suitable conditions for adiabatic redshift. The signal's redshift was observed, and was confirmed to originate in the dynamic carrier depletion. The redshift was experimentally determined as 0.21 nm.

Time of flight LiDARs are used for auto-driving of vehicles, while FMCW LiDARs potentially achieve a higher sensitivity. In this study, we fabricated and tested each component of a FMCW LiDAR based on Si photonics and experimentally simulated the ranging action. Here, we drove a Si photonic crystal slow light modulator with linearly frequency-chirped signal in the frequency band of 500–1000 MHz and a repetition frequency of 100 kHz, to generate FM-signal light from a narrow-linewidth laser source. Next, we branched the signal light into two paths. One was inserted into a fiber delay line of 20–320 m and its output was irradiated to a photonic crystal slow beam steering device acting as an optical antenna via the free-space transmission. When the irradiation angle was optimized so that the antenna gain took maximum for a set laser wavelength, light was efficiently coupled into the antenna. We mixed the light output from the antenna with reference light of the other path with no delay, and detected it by balanced photodiodes. We observed a beat signal whose frequency well agreed with the theoretical value predicted from the length of the delay line. Thus, we succeeded in the experimental simulation of the FMCW LiDAR. We also observed a spectral sequence around the beat spectrum, in which the inter-frequency spacing equals the repetition frequency and corresponds to a range resolution of 30 cm which will be improved by expanding the modulation bandwidth.

A lattice-shifted photonic crystal waveguide (LSPCW) maintains slow light as a guided mode and works as an optical antenna when a kind of double periodicity is introduced. Selecting one LSPCW from its array and converting the fan beam to a spot beam using a collimator lens allows non-mechanical, two-dimensional beam steering. We employed a shallow-etched grating into the LSPCW as the double periodicity to increase the upward emission efficiency and designed a bespoke prism lens to convert the steering angle in a desired direction while maintaining the collimation condition for the steered beam. As a result, a sharp spot beam with an average beam divergence of 0.15° was steered in the range of 40 ∘ × 4.4 ∘ without precise adjustment of the lens position. The number of resolution points obtained was 4256. This method did not require complicated and power-consuming optical phase control like that in optical phased arrays, so it is expected to be applied in complete solid-state light detection and ranging.

Using machine learning, we optimized an ultrasmall photonic crystal nanocavity to attain a high Q . Training data were collected via finite-difference time-domain simulation for models with randomly shifted holes, and a fully connected neural network (NN) was trained, resulting in a coefficient of determination between predicted and calculated values of 0.977. By repeating NN training and optimization of the Q value on the trained NN, the Q was roughly improved by a factor of 10–20 for various situations. Assuming a 180-nm-thick semiconductor slab at a wavelength approximately 1550 nm, we obtained Q = 1 , 011 , 400 in air; 283,200 in a solution, which was suitable for biosensing; and 44,600 with a nanoslot for high sensitivity. Important hole positions were also identified using the linear Lasso regression algorithm.

In this study, we fabricated a photoelectrochemical circuit using GaInAsP photonic crystal nanolasers as a working electrode. Then, we controlled the emission intensity and lasing wavelength of these nanolasers by applying a bias voltage in an ionic solution. The electrochemical working points for the emission intensity and wavelength were observed for the backward and forward biases, respectively. We confirmed that the emission intensity is primarily changed by the surface recombination, which is enhanced by the Schottky barrier near the solid–liquid interface. The wavelength shift is also assumed to be caused by the Pockels effect in the electric double layer of the solution. This control method can maximize and stabilize the performance of photonic biochemical sensors and also become an option in controlling the laser diode characteristics., This article may be downloaded for personal use only. We present the results of a theoretic study of the electromagnetic field imbalance in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which reveal that the magnetic field components induced by the electric fields normal and parallel to a metal surface cancel each other in SPPs, resulting in an imbalance. A group velocity analysis shows that this imbalance contributes significantly to the slow propagation of SPPs. We also analyze the enhanced spontaneous emission and nonlinearity in plasmonic cavities, and the results indicate that the electromagnetic field imbalance must be considered to correctly estimate the interaction strength.

We demonstrate label-free imaging of living cells using a GaInAsP semiconductor imaging plate. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity is changed by immersing the semiconductor wafer in different pH solutions and by depositing charged polyelectrolytes on the wafer. Various observations indicate that this phenomenon arises from the radiative and surface recombination rates modified by the Schottky barrier at the charged semiconductor surface. HeLa cancer cells were cultured on the semiconductor, and PL was observed using a near-infrared camera. The semiconductor areas with the cells attached exhibited characteristic PL profiles, which might reflect the attachment and surface condition of the cells, cellular matrix, and other substances.

The detection of low-concentration biomarkers is expected to facilitate the early diagnosis of severe diseases, including malignant tumors. Using photonic crystal nanolaser sensors, we detected prostate-specific antigen (PSA) from a concentration of 1 fM, which is difficult to detect by conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The signal intensity and stability were improved by using a surfactant (i.e., ethanolamine). Even when a contaminant such as bovine serum albumin was mixed into the PSA sample, thereby increasing the concentration of the contaminant ten billion times, it was still possible to maintain a high level of detection.

We demonstrate 10 Gb/s modulation in a 200 μm photonic crystal silicon optical modulator, in both carrier-injection and depletion modes. In particular, this is the first demonstration of 10 Gb/s modulation in depletion mode and without pre-emphasis, in a Mach-Zehnder type modulator of this length, although moderate pre-emphasis can improve the signal quality. This is made possible by utilizing the slow-light of the photonic crystal waveguide, where the group index ng is ~ 30 and gives ~ 7 times enhancement in the modulation efficiency compared to rib-waveguide devices. We observe 10 Gb/s modulation at drive voltages as low as 1.6 V and 3.6 V peak-to-peak, in injection- and depletion-modes, respectively.

GaInAsP photonic crystal (PC) point-shift nanolasers operate at room temperature and under pulsed and continuous-wave condition by photopumping, with an effective threshold of ～1 μW, a single mode peak of over 40 dB, and a small modal volume of -0.2 times the cubic wavelength. We report the details of its design, fabrication process, measurement method, and lasing characteristics. In particular, we reveal that wide spectral broadening often observed for nanolasers under pulsed condition is caused by large thermal chirping. Then, we focus on a nanolaser-based liquid index sensor, which is also applicable to detecting gases and bio-molecules. The dependence of the laser's sensitivity and resolution on the modal profile and spectral linewidth are investigated. We also configure the laser in a large-scale array, and demonstrate spectrometer-free sensor system. Finally, we present a nanoslot nanolaser, which is particularly suitable for further reducing the modal volume and enhancing light-matter interaction and sensor performance. Additionally, we demonstrate that high sensitivity and spectral narrowing by the unique optical confinement in the nanoslot gives rise to.

Optical nonlinearity can be enhanced by the combination of highly nonlinear chalcogenide glass and photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) providing strong optical confinement and slow-light effects. In a Ag-As(2)Se(3) chalcogenide PCW, the effective nonlinear parameter γeff reaches 6.3 × 10(4) W(-1)m(-1), which is 200 times larger than that in Si photonic wire waveguides. In this paper, we report the detailed design, fabrication process, and the linear and nonlinear characteristics of this waveguide at silica fiber communication wavelengths. We show that the waveguide exhibits negligible two-photon absorption, and also high-efficiency self-phase modulation and four-wave mixing, which are assisted by low-dispersion slow light.

We proposed and demonstrated a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical beam-steering device consisting of a thermally controlled doubly periodic Si two-dimensional bulk photonic crystal waveguide and coupled microring multiplexers. Beam forming and steering while maintaining a sharp profile is much easier in this device than with optical phased arrays which need the fine phase control. By dividing the range of beam-steering angles into different wavelength channels, it is possible to cover a wide range of angles, even when each angle is small. In this study, we fabricated a device with four wavelength channels, each of which showed beam steering of 4°-5° as a result of heating, resulting in a total of 16°. Two-dimensional steering is also achieved by loading a collimator lens and selecting one waveguide from those arrayed. We evaluated 112 resolution points with four wavelengths and 448 points in total by switching four waveguides. If this WDM concept is introduced into light detection and ranging and the number of wavelengths is increased, it will be possible to increase the sensing throughput, which is usually constrained by the round-trip time of light, by simultaneous parallel operation.

We demonstrate a Si photonic crystal waveguide Mach-Zehnder modulator that incorporates meander-line electrodes to compensate for the phase mismatch between slow light and RF signals. We first employed commonized ground electrodes in the modulator to suppress undesired fluctuations in the electro-optic (EO) response due to coupled slot-line modes of RF signals. Then, we theoretically and experimentally investigated the effect of the phase mismatch on the EO response. We confirmed that meander-line electrodes improve the EO response, particularly in the absence of internal reflection of the RF signals. The cut-off frequency of this device can reach 27 GHz, which allows high-speed modulation up to 50 Gbps.

Proposed is a simple silicon wire intersection with low diffraction loss and crosstalk. Finite-difference time-domain analysis shows the lowest loss to be as small as 0.14 dB. A nearly optimum structure was fabricated on SOI substrate, the measured loss being 0.24 dB, which is only 0.01 dB larger than the theoretical loss.

Light focusing characteristics of a negative refractive lens fabricated out of a silicon-on-insulator photonic crystal (PC) slab are investigated theoretically and experimentally. It focuses in the near infrared, but the focal spot is degraded by a lens aberration. To reduce the aberration, we designed a composite PC that gives rise to a narrower focal spot. In addition, two unique functions of this lens are demonstrated: refocusing outside of the PC and parallel focusing, enabling image transfer and real image formation, respectively. These results prove the feasibility of an in-plane free space optical network based on negative refraction.

A GaInAsP photonic crystal slab microlaser with an integrated passive waveguide was fabricated by a MOCVD butt-joint regrowth process. The boundary between the active and passive regions was optimized for high light transmission. In addition, the edge of the waveguide was designed to output a narrow beam, and the light detection was improved. Consequently, a maximum output power of 0.17 mW was obtained with a differential quantum efficiency of 20%, which would increase to more than 40% under ideal detection conditions.

Slow light with a remarkably low group velocity is a promising solution for buffering and time-domain processing of optical signals. It also offers the possibility for spatial compression of optical energy and the enhancement of linear and nonlinear optical effects. Photonic-crystal devices are especially attractive for generating slow light, as they are compatible with on-chip integration and room-temperature operation, and can offer wide-bandwidth and dispersion-free propagation. Here the background theory, recent experimental demonstrations and progress towards tunable slow-light structures based on photonic-band engineering are reviewed. Practical issues related to real devices and their applications are also discussed. The unique properties of wide-bandwidth and dispersion-free propagation in photonic-crystal devices have made them a good candidate for slow-light generation. This article gives the background theory of slow light, as well as an overview of recent experimental demonstrations based on photonic-band engineering.

Photonic crystals are multidimensional periodic gratings, in which the light propagation is dominated by Bragg diffraction that appears to be refraction at the flat surfaces of the crystals. The refraction angle from positive to negative, perfectly or only partially obeying Snell's law, can be tailored based on photonic band theory. Negative refraction enables novel prism, collimation, and lens effects. Because photonic crystals usually consist of two transparent media, these effects occur at absorption-free frequencies, affording significant design flexibility for free-space optics. The photonic-crystal slab, a high-index membrane with a two-dimensional airhole array, must be carefully designed to avoid unwanted reflection and diffraction. Light focusing based on negative refraction forms a parallel image of a light source, facilitating optical couplers and condenser lenses for wavelength demultiplexing. A compact wavelength demultiplexer can be designed by combining the prism and lens effects.

We report on the fabrication and evaluation of a directional coupler consisting of two different chirped photonic crystal (PC) waveguides that can generate wideband, low dispersion slow light. The directional coupler was fabricated from a silicon-on-insulator PC slab with airhole diameter chirping. For both waveguides, we observed a group index of 60-80 near the photonic band edge and opposite dispersion characteristics. In the directional coupler, we evaluated a group index of 30-40 in a wavelength bandwidth of 32 nm. The experimental results agree with the theoretical relation between the group index and bandwidth.

We propose and demonstrate an on-chip optical correlator, in which two types of photonic crystal slow-light waveguides are integrated and operated as an optical delay scanner and a two-photon-absorption photodetector. The footprint of the device, which was fabricated using a CMOS-compatible process, was 1.0 × 0.3 mm(2), which is substantially smaller than that of conventional optical correlators with free-space optics. We observed optical pulses using this device and confirmed the correspondence of pulse waveforms with those observed using a commercial correlator when the pulse width was 5-7 ps. This device will achieve one-chipping of an optical correlator and related measurement instruments.

We designed and fabricated 70×75 µm2 arrayed waveguide grating demultiplexer consisting of Si slab and wire waveguides on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. By optimizing the connection between components and the layout of arrayed waveguides, internal light scattering and the increase in phase error were suppressed. As a result, clear demultiplexing characteristics were observed with a channel spacing of 8 nm and a sidelobe level of -22 dB in the wavelength range from 1.5 to 1.6 µm.

An ultralow group velocity of light in a III–V semiconductor photonic crystal (PC) waveguide is expected to enhance the optical gain per unit length of the waveguide. We discuss the possibility of a compact semiconductor optical amplifier that utilizes a single-line-defect PC waveguide fabricated from an all semiconductor low-Δ slab with deep airholes. From photonic band and traveling-wave rate equation analysis, a gain of larger than 20 dB is expected in a short active PC waveguide of 10 µm length, although the waveguide mode has a large radiation loss. We experimentally demonstrate such a waveguide in the passive wavelength regime. The waveguide is fabricated into a GaInAsP/InP wafer with high-mesa input/output waveguides. We show that the observed transmission characteristics of light correspond well to the photonic band theory.
