The scientific performance of the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) after one year of in-orbit operation is presented. We describe the main optical parameters and discuss photometric calibration, white noise sensitivity, and noise properties. A preliminary evaluation of the impact of the main systematic effects is presented. For each of the performance parameters, we outline the methods used to obtain them from the flight data and provide a comparison with pre-launch ground assessments, which are essentially confirmed in flight., Comment: Published version

We describe the processing of data from the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) used in production of the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC). In particular, we discuss the steps involved in reducing the data from telemetry packets to cleaned, calibrated, time-ordered data (TOD) and frequency maps. Data are continuously calibrated using the modulation of the temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation induced by the motion of the spacecraft. Noise properties are estimated from TOD from which the sky signal has been removed using a generalized least square map-making algorithm. Measured 1/f noise knee-frequencies range from 100mHz at 30GHz to a few tens of mHz at 70GHz. A destriping code (Madam) is employed to combine radiometric data and pointing information into sky maps, minimizing the variance of correlated noise. Noise covariance matrices required to compute statistical uncertainties on LFI and Planck products are also produced. We report on the initial analysis of Herschel/HIFI carbon monoxide (CO) observations of the Martian atmosphere performed between 11 and 16 April 2010. We selected the (7-6) rotational transitions of the isotopes ^{13}CO at 771 GHz and C^{18}O at 768 GHz in order to retrieve the mean vertical profile of temperature and the mean volume mixing ratio of carbon monoxide. The derived temperature profile agrees within less than 5 K with general circulation model (GCM) predictions up to an altitude of 45 km, however, show about 12-15 K lower values at 60 km. The CO mixing ratio was determined as 980 \pm 150 ppm, in agreement with the 900 ppm derived from Herschel/SPIRE observations in November 2009., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (special issue on HIFI first results); minor changes to match published version

The Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) is one of the three science instruments on ESA's far infrared and submillimetre observatory. It employs two Ge:Ga photoconductor arrays (stressed and unstressed) with 16x25 pixels, each, and two filled silicon bolometer arrays with 16x32 and 32x64 pixels, respectively, to perform integral-field spectroscopy and imaging photometry in the 60-210\mu\ m wavelength regime. In photometry mode, it simultaneously images two bands, 60-85\mu\ m or 85-125\mu\m and 125-210\mu\ m, over a field of view of ~1.75'x3.5', with close to Nyquist beam sampling in each band. In spectroscopy mode, it images a field of 47"x47", resolved into 5x5 pixels, with an instantaneous spectral coverage of ~1500km/s and a spectral resolution of ~175km/s. We summarise the design of the instrument, describe observing modes, calibration, and data analysis methods, and present our current assessment of the in-orbit performance of the instrument based on the Performance Verification tests. PACS is fully operational, and the achieved performance is close to or better than the pre-launch predictions.

6. EVN observations of 6.7 GHz methanol masers from Medicina survey

We report VLBI observations of methanol masers in the brightest 5(1)-6(0) A+ transition at 6.7 GHz in NGC 281W, 18151-1208 and 19388+2357. Using the fringe rate method absolute positions were obtained for all observed sources. A linear ordered structure with a velocity gradient was revealed in NGC 281W. Under assumption that such structure is an edge-on Keplerian disk around the central object with a mass of 30Msun located at a distance of 3.5 kpc from the Sun, we estimated that methanol masers are situated at the distance about 400 a.u. from the center of the disk. A second epoch of observations was reported for L1206, GL2789 and 20062+3550. The upper limits on the relative motions of maser spots are estimated to be 4.7 km/s and 28 km/s for L1206 and GL2789 respectively., Comment: 2 pages, 1 table, 2 figures, proceedings of the 6th EVN Symposium

- Abstract
The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity (${{\Delta T}\over T}$ ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

19 páginas, 18 figuras, 3 tablas.-- et al., We describe the processing of data from the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) used in production of the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC). In particular, we discuss the steps involved in reducing the data from telemetry packets to cleaned, calibrated, time-ordered data (TOD) and frequency maps. Data are continuously calibrated using the modulation of the temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation induced by the motion of the spacecraft. Noise properties are estimated from TOD from which the sky signal has been removed using a generalized least square map-making algorithm. Measured 1/f noise knee-frequencies range from ~100 mHz at 30 GHz to a few tens of mHz at 70GHz. A destriping code (Madam) is employed to combine radiometric data and pointing information into sky maps, minimizing the variance of correlated noise. Noise covariance matrices required to compute statistical uncertainties on LFI and Planck products are also produced. Main beams are estimated down to the ≈−10dB level using Jupiter transits, which are also used for geometrical calibration of the focal plane., This work was supported by the Academy of Finland grants 121703 and 121962.

We will present realisations of MMIC Low Noise amplifiers designed to operate in a cryogenic environment, working from 18 to 26 GHz. These devices have been produced with the intent to be installed in a five beams feed array receiver, realised to improve the single dish survey and VLBI performances of the 32m diameter parabolic dish antenna of the Medicina Radioastronomical Station, near Bologna, in Italy. The entire project named FARADAY has been developed in the FP-5 context supported by EU. Many efforts has been concentrated to produce devices with the best compromise between lowest noise, flat gain, and good input matching. For this device, MMIC 0,1 um gate length InP HEMT process has been used. We will start the work description from the design specification to the on wafer devices measurements. We will also introduce our packaging material investigations in order to have a reliable working device at cryogenic temperature. Packaging device efforts has been devoted also to realise a modular carrier that let the choice between coaxial and waveguide interface.

- Abstract
The scientific performance of the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) after one year of in-orbit operation is presented. We describe the main optical parameters and discuss photometric calibration, white noise sensitivity, and noise properties. A preliminary evaluation of the impact of the main systematic effects is presented. For each of the performance parameters, we outline the methods used to obtain them from the flight data and provide a comparison with pre-launch ground assessments, which are essentially confirmed in flight. © ESO, 2011.

- Abstract
We will describe a system of three heterodyne receivers. Its mixers are based on SIS tunnel junctions which allow a very sensible downconversion of the detectable signal from 94 GHz, 225 GHz and 345 GHz to 1.5 GHz. This will allow the detection of molecular rotational transition lines from diffuse molecular clouds. The current status of a 94 GHz receiver, prototype of MASTER, will also be described. Technical design and cryogenic problems solution will be shown and we will focus our attention on the optical coupling technique based on Gaussian beam analysis

Solar Physics - Abstract
High spatial resolution observations of solar active regions in soft X-rays and centimetric wavelengths are compared using X-ray and radio data obtained during the 1973 Skylab mission. An overall correspondence in position and size between regions of enhanced X-ray emission and regions of enhanced microwave emission was noticed. However, a closer analysis of the findings suggested that substantial differences exist between the emission properties of the atmosphere over sunspots and that over plages, with the difference probably related to the average intensity of the magnetic field, which was found to be higher over sunspot umbrae than over plage areas.

- Abstract
We present a second update of the Arcetri Catalog of water masers (Comoretto et al. [CITE]; Brand et al. [CITE]). The present study reports the results of the observations carried out with the Medicina 32-m radiotelescope from January 1993 to April 2000 on a sample of 300 sources. This compilation consists of newly discovered maser sources that did not appear in the previous Arcetri Catalogs and is made of: a) detections from the literature, and b) unpublished detections obtained with the Medicina antenna. Overall, 83 out of 300 sources were detected. The detection rate is low (28% ) and we attribute this result to the inclusion in our survey of a rather large number of spurious maser detections that have appeared in one particular paper. The observational parameters are reported in tabular form for all the 300 sources and the spectra of the detected masers are presented. We discuss the global properties of the complete Arcetri Catalog based on Comoretto et al. ([CITE]), Brand et al. ([CITE]) and the present observations, which now contains 1013 galactic water maser sources. Of these, 937 have an IRAS counterpart within 1 arcmin from the nominal position of the maser. We establish a classification scheme based on the IRAS flux densities which allows to distinguish between water masers associated with star forming regions and late-type stars. The Arcetri Catalog represents a useful data base for systematic studies of galactic water maser sources.

- Abstract
The scientific performance of the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) after one year of in-orbit operation is presented. We describe the main optical parameters and discuss photometric calibration, white noise sensitivity, and noise properties. A preliminary evaluation of the impact of the main systematic effects is presented. For each of the performance parameters, we outline the methods used to obtain them from the flight data and provide a comparison with pre-launch ground assessments, which are essentially confirmed in flight.

22 páginas, 16 figuras, 6 tablas.-- Planck Science Team: et al., The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity ( ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

We will describe a system of three heterodyne receivers. Its mixers are based on SIS tunnel junctions which allow a very sensible downconversion of the detectable signal from 94 GHz, 225 GHz and 345 GHz to 1.5 GHz. This will allow the detection of molecular rotational transition lines from diffuse molecular clouds. The current status of a 94 GHz receiver, prototype of MASTER, will also be described. Technical design and cryogenic problems solution will be shown and we will focus our attention on the optical coupling technique based on Gaussian beam analysis

30. Chemical Synthesis of Monolignols: Traditional Methods, Recent Advances, and Future Challenges in Sustainable Processes.

- Abstract
Monolignols represent pivotal alcohol-based constituents in lignin synthesis, playing indispensable roles in plant growth and development with profound implications for industries reliant on wood and paper. Monolignols and their derivates have multiple applications in several industries. Monolignols exhibit antioxidant activity due to their ability to donate hydrogen atoms or electrons to neutralize free radicals, thus preventing oxidative stress and damage to cells. Characterized by their alcohol functionalities, monolignols present three main forms: p -coumaryl alcohol, coniferyl alcohol, and sinapyl alcohol. In nature, particularly in plants, monolignols with geometry ( E ) predominate over their Z counterparts. The methods for obtaining the three canonical monolignols, two less-common monolignols, and a monolignol analogue are addressed to present an overview of these phenol-based compounds, particularly from a synthetic standpoint. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis is used to explain the advantages and disadvantages of synthesizing monolignols, key alcohol-containing raw materials with enormous significance in both plant biology and industrial applications, using bench chemical methods. The uniqueness of this work is that it provides an overview of the synthetic pathways of monolignols to assist researchers in pharmaceutical and biological fields in selecting an appropriate procedure for the preparation of their lignin models. Moreover, we aim to inspire scientists, particularly chemists, to develop more sustainable synthetic protocols for monolignols.

The article discusses the production of platform chemicals from various biological sources, including glycerol, lignin, cellulose, bio-oils, and sea products. It presents the results of catalytic and downstream processes involved in the conversion of these biomass-derived feedstocks. The experimental approaches are complemented by numerical descriptions, ranging from density functional theory (DFT) calculations to kinetic modellingof the experimental data. Acidolysis lignins from the species Quercus cerris L. and Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. were isolated and characterized using high pressure size exclusion chromatography (HP-SEC), Fourier-transform (FTIR) infrared spectroscopy, analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GCMS), and two-dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence (2D HSQC) NMR spectroscopy. The acidolysis lignins from the two different species varied in chemical composition and structural characteristics, with Q. cerris L. lignin having a higher S/G ratio and higher molar mass averages with a bimodal molar mass distribution. The different analytical techniques FTIR spectroscopy, Py-GCMS, and 2D NMR spectroscopy provided consistent results regarding the S/G ratio of the lignins from the two wood species. Based on the determined high S/G ratio of both oak and eucalypt lignin, the two wood sources could be promoted as substrates for efficient lignin isolation in modern forest biorefineries in order to develop innovative lignin-based value-added biorefinery products.

33. Prebiotic supplementation modulates selective effects of stress on behavior and brain metabolome in aged mice.

- Abstract
Aging has a significant impact on physiology with implications for central nervous system function coincident with increased vulnerability to stress exposures. A number of stress-sensitive molecular mechanisms are hypothesized to underpin age-related changes in brain function. Recent cumulative evidence also suggests that aging impacts gut microbiota composition. However, the impact of such effects on the ability of mammals to respond to stress in aging is still relatively unexplored. Therefore, in this study we assessed the ability of a microbiota-targeted intervention (the prebiotic FOS-Inulin) to alleviate age-related responses to stress. Exposure of aged C57BL/6 mice to social defeat led to an altered social interaction phenotype in the social interaction test, which was reversed by FOS-Inulin supplementation. Interestingly, this occured independent of affecting social defeat-induced elevations in the stress hormone corticosterone. Additionally, the behavioral modifications following FOS-Inulin supplementation were also not coincident with improvement of pro-inflammatory markers. Metabolomics analysis was performed and intriguingly, age associated metabolites were shown to be reduced in the prefrontal cortex of stressed aged mice and this deficit was recovered by FOS-Inulin supplementation. Taken together these results suggest that prebiotic dietary intervention rescued the behavioral response to stress in aged mice, not through amelioration of the inflammatory response, but by restoring the levels of key metabolites in the prefrontal cortex of aged animals. In recent years, the demand for high-quality solar products that combine high efficacy with environmentally friendly characteristics has increased. Among the coral-safe sunscreens, ethylhexyl triazone (Uvinul
® T150) is an effective organic UVB filter, photostable and practically insoluble in water, therefore difficult to be formulated in water-based products. Oil-free sunscreens are considered ideal for most skin types, as they are not comedogenic and do not leave the skin feeling greasy. Recent studies reported that pollen grains might represent innovative drug delivery systems for their ability to encapsulate and release active ingredients in a controlled manner. Before being used, the pollen grains must be treated to remove cellular material and biomolecules, which could cause allergic reactions in predisposed subjects; the obtained hollow structures possess uniform diameter and a rigid wall with openings that allow them to be filled with bioactive substances. In the present work, pollen from Lycopodium clavatum has been investigated both as a delivery system for ethylhexyl triazone and as an active ingredient by evaluating its photoprotective capacity. The goal is to obtain environmentally friendly solar aqueous formulations that take advantage of both sunscreen and sporopollenin microcapsules' UV protection with a relatively low cost, as these pollen grains are widely available.- Published

35. Expanding the Chemical Space of Benzimidazole Dicationic Ionic Liquids.

- Abstract
Benzimidazole dicationic ionic liquids (BDILs) have not yet been widely explored in spite of their potential. Therefore, two structurally related families of BDILs, paired with either bromide or bistriflimide anions and bearing alkyl spacers ranging from C3 to C6, have been prepared. Their thermal properties have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while their electrical properties have been assessed by cyclic voltammetry (CV). TG analysis confirmed the higher stability of the bistriflimide BDILs over the bromide BDILs, with minor variation within the two families. Conversely, DSC and CV allowed for ascertaining the role played by the spacer length. In particular, the thermal behavior changed dramatically among the members of the bistriflimide family, and all three possible thermal behavior types of ILs were observed. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry showed different electrochemical window (C
3 (C1 BenzIm)2 /2Tf2 N < C4 (C1 BenzIm)2 /2Tf2 N, C5 (C1 BenzIm)2 /2Tf2 N < C6 (C1 BenzIm)2 /2Tf2 N) as well as a reduction peak potential, shape, and intensity as a function of the spacer length. The results obtained highlight the benefit of accessing a more structurally diverse pool of compounds offered by dicationic ILs when compared to the parent monocationic ILs. In particular, gains are to be found in the ease of fine-tuning their properties, which translates in facilitating further investigations toward BDILs as designer solvents and catalysts.- Published
