Abstract Background Urban agriculture is potentially an important piece of the food security puzzle for a rapidly growing urban world population. Community gardening is also promoted as a safe and viable form of exercise for aging populations in crowded settings where opportunities to participate in other action activities may be limited. Knowledge of potential site-specific health risks to environmental contaminants is important in dialogues promoting urban farming. Methods We assess the pseudo-total concentrations of selected potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the soils of community gardens, public parks, and woodlands in the tropical urban island nation of Singapore. We compare concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc with amalgamated risk guidelines to form a baseline understanding of the level of contamination in these spaces. We also perform providence tracking with lead isotopes to identify potential sources of contaminants. Results All pseudo-total concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the soil were below threshold concentrations considered to represent substantial risk. Further, PTE concentrations in gardens were largely equivalent to those found in community parks and woodlands, but the geographical distribution varied. Provenance tracking with Pb isotopes indicated Pb in gardens was both anthropogenic and natural, but spatially variable. The lack of strong spatial clustering of areas with the highest PTE concentrations was inconsistent with a common point source of contamination. However, the correlation between Cu and Zn suggest a common source for these elements, such as road/trafficking or atmospheric deposition. Conclusion We find limited risk of urban gardeners to exposure to Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn—elements that are commonly abundant in urban settings with dense transportation networks and substantial industrial activities. The low levels of PTEs are encouraging for the promotion of urban farming for food production and leisure in this dense urban setting. However, as concentrations were low, we did not assess bioavailability and bioaccessibility of the PTEs. These assessments would need to be determined in cases of with higher levels of contamination to provide a more thorough consideration of actual human risk.

Energy plays an important role in sustaining humanity. With rising worldwide energy demand and the great dependence of energy generation on fossil fuels, it is inevitable that enhanced oil recovery must be deployed to recover more possible reserves. This report focuses on reviewing publications related to enhanced oil recovery from 2007 to 2020 through the utilization of bibliometric analysis. Of the 5498 documents retrieved from Web of Science, 569 journals, 90 countries, 2025 organizations, and 8684 authors are involved. China, the United States, Iran, Canada, and India published the most documents. The United States has the highest h-index at 61. The analysis of keywords had shown that the hot issues lie around four main domains namely carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS), microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR), development of unconventional reserves, and chemical enhanced oil recovery. This study provides some useful insights for future research directions. From there, discussions were subsequently placed on chemical EOR.

Rotating packed bed (RPB) belongs to a HIGee technology, a process intensification device that can provide better mass transfer rate due to the generation of hyper-gravity under the influence of centrifugal force. While determining the efficiency of the RPB, the MRT of the liquid plays a vital role. The MRT of the RPB is very small and can be tuned in accordance with the mass transfer rate of the solvent to achieve the required outlet concentration of the absorbed gas. There exist two methods, i.e., empirical correlation and the residence time distribution (RTD) method. The applicability of both methods still needs to be investigated for better prediction of MRT in RPB. The current study compares the MRT of the two of the most widely employed techniques, i.e., MRT by empirical correlation and the RTD approach using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The difference between the MRT by both methods lies between 30-38%. The results show that the RTD better predicts the MRT in the RPB as compared to the Burns empirical correlation.

Tiong Ang is developing a work entitled 'The Second Hands' for the 9th Bucharest Biennial 2020–21. This is a collective enterprise. Under the name Tiong Ang & Company, he leads a core team of ±15 people, which for certain parts of the work will be expanded with a group of dancers and extras. In terms of intention, The Second Hands is a philosophical work that draws a sort of parallel line with the events in Bucharest and Timisoara at the end of 1989, leading to the deposition of Nicolai Ceausescu and the end of Communist rule, but in today’s world, 2020–21. At that time, we in the West were able to follow these important events. What was special about the Romanian Revolution was how close the media and reality came together and almost merged. The Romanian State Television broadcasted live images of a dictator who appeased the masses while gunshots, clamour, and chaos in the background wiped out his story. Rebellion, revolution, and the celebration of freedom are imagined as moments of passage in Tiong Ang’s work of art: that is the intention. This is not made explicit, the indicated line is fictitious, but it is palpable and emerges in descriptions of the project. Essentially, 'The Second Hands' is conceived as a large film production, divided into five films under the direction of different makers. The themes of the five films are strongly interconnected: political oppression (Ola Hassanain), mass demonstration (Esther Arribas, Bart van Dam), coming of age in uncertain times (Fey Lehiane), a trip through Europe to Romania filmed as a road movie (Robert Wittendorp) and finally the Congregation, a collective performance in Bucharest (Tiong Ang) as an Ode to Freedom. Because of the corona situation, Ang had to postpone 'The Second Hands'. In March I spoke to him for the first time about his project.* Just before that, he had to stop all the film productions. In June, Ang proposes to talk further. A new momentum has emerged with waiting as a motto, now that the opening of the work in Bucharest has been postponed for a year. Let’s deepen, he suggests, our conversation by juxtaposing the Bucharest plan with another complex work: 'Universality: Decorum of Thought and Desire' (Guangzhou, 2015). Ang wants to use that installation, whose set-up resembled that of 'The Second Hands' – eight different films were made for 'Universality' as part of a fictional evening programme, a full night of television – as a template for his new project. I suggest to also consider a third presentation, that of a young Ang at the Havana Biennale in 1994. His participation in that biennial, at the very start of his career, was a formative experience of a ‘revolutionary’ manifestation in a changing art world. (MK)

Around 60% of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) remain undiagnosed after comprehensive genetic testing, primarily of protein-coding genes1. Large genome-sequenced cohorts are improving our ability to discover new diagnoses in the non-coding genome. Here we identify the non-coding RNA RNU4-2 as a syndromic NDD gene. RNU4-2 encodes the U4 small nuclear RNA (snRNA), which is a critical component of the U4/U6.U5 tri-snRNP complex of the major spliceosome2. We identify an 18 base pair region of RNU4-2 mapping to two structural elements in the U4/U6 snRNA duplex (the T-loop and stem III) that is severely depleted of variation in the general population, but in which we identify heterozygous variants in 115 individuals with NDD. Most individuals (77.4%) have the same highly recurrent single base insertion (n.64_65insT). In 54 individuals in whom it could be determined, the de novo variants were all on the maternal allele. We demonstrate that RNU4-2 is highly expressed in the developing human brain, in contrast to RNU4-1 and other U4 homologues. Using RNA sequencing, we show how 5 splice-site use is systematically disrupted in individuals with RNU4-2 variants, consistent with the known role of this region during spliceosome activation. Finally, we estimate that variants in this 18 base pair region explain 0.4% of individuals with NDD. This work underscores the importance of non-coding genes in rare disorders and will provide a diagnosis to thousands of individuals with NDD worldwide.

COVID-19 pandemic has brought drastic and unprecedented challenges to the medical education and medical students, affecting them physically, mentally and emotionally. While progressing through the post-pandemic recovery phase, it is crucial to comprehensively evaluate the pandemic's consequences and tackle the underlying problems. To investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on medical students' mental health, social well-being, and academic progression. A cross-sectional study was carried out with voluntary sampling of students from both government and private medical schools in Malaysia. A self-administered online survey form containing three validated psychological tools was distributed (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale HADS, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, NIH Toolbox Social Relationship Scales). There were also questions regarding the challenges faced by medical students and their academic performance during COVID-19 pandemic. Scores of each questionnaire were tabulated, analyzed and interpreted according to their specific cut-points. Two hundred and thirteen responses were received. 89.2% (n = 190) were domestic students while 10.8% (n = 23) were international students. Out of 32 medical universities in Malaysia, the participants were from 19 of them (9 public and 10 private universities). About half of the participants had contracted COVID-19 infection during the study period (n = 124, 58.2%). Majority had chosen "Lack of on-campus learning and training session causing incompetency" as the most relevant impact of COVID-19 on their academic progression (n = 85, 39.9%). Above 90% of participants passed their Final Academic Assessment in 2020 (91.5%) and 2021 (93.9%). About half of them (n = 86, 40.4%) were having symptoms considerable of anxiety while only 19.2% (n = 41) were having symptoms considerable of depression. Majority had normal self-esteem (n = 177, 83.1%). For social relationship, around two-third of them had great social support and companionship. However, more than half had social distress. The median for the period of time having absolute online classes, absolute physical classes and hybrid classes were 18, 4, and 9 months, respectively. Having absolute online classes of >18 months was associated significantly with higher perceived hostility (16.49 vs. 14.47, p = 0.012). In addition, being infected with COVID-19 was associated significantly with higher self-esteem (26.88 vs. 25.85, p = 0.009). Large proportion of students were affected by COVID-19 pandemic. Absolute online classes has huge impact on emotions of medical students especially from the aspect of perceived hostility. Hence, implementation of online medical education during COVID-19 era requires modifications and improvements.

Copy number variants (CNVs) are significant contributors to the pathogenicity of rare genetic diseases and, with new innovative methods, can now reliably be identified from exome sequencing. Challenges still remain in accurate classification of CNV pathogenicity. CNV calling using GATK-gCNV was performed on exomes from a cohort of 6,633 families (15,759 individuals) with heterogeneous phenotypes and variable prior genetic testing collected at the Broad Institute Center for Mendelian Genomics of the Genomics Research to Elucidate the Genetics of Rare Diseases consortium and analyzed using the seqr platform. The addition of CNV detection to exome analysis identified causal CNVs for 171 families (2.6%). The estimated sizes of CNVs ranged from 293 bp to 80 Mb. The causal CNVs consisted of 140 deletions, 15 duplications, 3 suspected complex structural variants (SVs), 3 insertions, and 10 complex SVs, the latter two groups being identified by orthogonal confirmation methods. To classify CNV variant pathogenicity, we used the 2020 American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics/ClinGen CNV interpretation standards and developed additional criteria to evaluate allelic and functional data as well as variants on the X chromosome to further advance the framework. We interpreted 151 CNVs as likely pathogenic/pathogenic and 20 CNVs as high-interest variants of uncertain significance. Calling CNVs from existing exome data increases the diagnostic yield for individuals undiagnosed after standard testing approaches, providing a higher-resolution alternative to arrays at a fraction of the cost of genome sequencing. Our improvements to the classification approach advances the systematic framework to assess the pathogenicity of CNVs.

BACKGROUND: In Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) PCV7 was introduced in 2008, then PCV10 in 2011 and PCV13 in 2014. In 2017 PCV10 was re-introduced, replacing PCV13. In the present study, we investigate the resultant rapidly changing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) epidemiology. METHODS: We compare the IPD incidence rate ratio (IRR) in NZ (2022 versus 2020) with other countries, and describe the IPD epidemiology (including trends in overall IPD and serotype 19A, and antimicrobial resistance) within NZ. Additionally, we performed a genomic-epidemiology investigation identifying the most common 19A sequence types and associated risk factors. FINDINGS: Though IPD incidence rates have increased in the US and Australia (2021-22) after declines in 2020, in NZ the incidence rate is the highest since 2011 with a significantly higher IRR than US (p

Abstract Background Brain-computer interface (BCI) offers promising solutions to cognitive enhancement in older people. Despite the clear progress received, there is limited evidence of BCI implementation for rehabilitation. This systematic review addresses BCI applications and challenges in the standard practice of EEG-based neurofeedback (NF) training in healthy older people or older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods Articles were searched via MEDLINE, PubMed, SCOPUS, SpringerLink, and Web of Science. 16 studies between 1st January 2010 to 1st November 2024 are included after screening using PRISMA. The risk of bias, system design, and neurofeedback protocols are reviewed. Results The successful BCI applications in NF trials in older people were biased by the randomisation process and outcome measurement. Although the studies demonstrate promising results in effectiveness of research-grade BCI for cognitive enhancement in older people, it is premature to make definitive claims about widespread BCI usability and applicability. Significance This review highlights the common issues in the field of EEG-based BCI for older people. Future BCI research could focus on trial design and BCI performance gaps between the old and the young to develop a robust BCI system that compensates for age-related declines in cognitive and motor functions.

Abstract Key functions of antibodies, such as viral neutralisation, depend on high-affinity binding. However, viral neutralisation poorly correlates with antigen affinity for reasons that have been unclear. Here, we use a new mechanistic model of bivalent binding to study >45 patient-isolated IgG1 antibodies interacting with SARS-CoV-2 RBD surfaces. The model provides the standard monovalent affinity/kinetics and new bivalent parameters, including the molecular reach: the maximum antigen separation enabling bivalent binding. We find large variations in these parameters across antibodies, including reach variations (22–46 nm) that exceed the physical antibody size (~15 nm). By using antigens of different physical sizes, we show that these large molecular reaches are the result of both the antibody and antigen sizes. Although viral neutralisation correlates poorly with affinity, a striking correlation is observed with molecular reach. Indeed, the molecular reach explains differences in neutralisation for antibodies binding with the same affinity to the same RBD-epitope. Thus, antibodies within an isotype class binding the same antigen can display differences in molecular reach, substantially modulating their binding and functional properties.

Abstract This study explores the integration of nanotechnology and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) machine learning algorithms to enhance the understanding and optimization of fuel spray dynamics in compression ignition (CI) engines with varying bowl geometries. The incorporation of nanotechnology, through the addition of nanoparticles to conventional fuels, improves fuel atomization, combustion efficiency, and emission control. Simultaneously, LSTM models are employed to analyze and predict the complex spray behavior under diverse operational and geometric conditions. Key parameters, including spray penetration, droplet size distribution, and evaporation rates, are modeled and validated against experimental data. The findings reveal that nanoparticle-enhanced fuels, coupled with LSTM-based predictive analytics, lead to superior combustion performance and lower pollutant formation. This interdisciplinary approach provides a robust framework for designing next-generation CI engines with improved efficiency and sustainability. Diesel engine performance and emissions were found to be influenced by variations in combustion chamber geometry, underwent validation through simulation using Diesel-RK. Re-entrant bowl profile in quaternary blend is found to exhibit 31.3% higher BTE and 8.65% lowered BSFC than the conventional HCC bowl at full load condition. Emission wise, re-entrant bowl induced 90.16% lowered CO, 59.95% lowered HC and 15.48% lowered smoke owing to improved spray penetration and faster burning of soot precursors. However, the NOx emissions of DBOPN-TRCC were found to be higher. The simulation outcomes, derived from Diesel-RK, were subsequently compared with empirical data obtained from real-world experiments. These experiments were systematically carried out under identical operating conditions, employing different piston bowl geometries.

Abstract The microgrid (MG) faces significant security issues due to the two-way power and information flow. Integrating an Energy Management System (EMS) to balance energy supply and demand in Malaysian microgrids, this study designs a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) that considers intermittent renewable sources and fluctuating demand patterns. FLC offers a flexible solution to energy scheduling effectively assessed by MATLAB/Simulink simulations. The microgrid consists of PV, battery, grid, and load. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller helps to extract the maximum PV output and manages the power storage by providing or absorbing excess power. System analysis is performed by observing the State of Charge (SoC)of the battery and output power for each source. The grid supplies additional power if the battery and PV fail to meet the load demand. Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) analysis compares the performance of the Proportional-Integral Controller (PIC) and FLC. The results show that the PI controller design reduces the THD in the current signal, while FLC does not reduce the THD of the grid current when used in the EMS. However, FLC offers better control over the battery’s SOC, effectively preventing overcharging and over-discharging. While PI reduces THD, FLC provides superior SOC control in a system comprising PV, battery, grid, and load. The findings demonstrate that the output current is zero when the SOC is higher than 80% or lower than 20%, signifying that no charging or discharging takes place to avoid overcharging and over-discharging. The third goal was accomplished by comparing and confirming that the grid current’s THD for the EMS designed with both the PI Controller and the FLC is maintained below 5%, following the IEEE 519 harmonic standard, using the THD block in MATLAB Simulink. This analysis highlights FLC’s potential to address demand-supply mismatches and renewable energy variability, which is crucial for optimizing microgrid performance.

Purpose: The present study explores a tricomponent attitude model for "forced" online learning applied in the post-COVID era following the online learning transition. The study aims to provide a reference for future practitioners in the event a similar crisis results in the mandatory transition towards this study mode again. Methodology: Following the guideline for judgmental sampling, a total of 156 valid responses were collected from Malaysian undergraduate students via an online questionnaire from Google Forms. The respondents' profiles were computed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0, while Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to validate the measurement model, structural model, and mediation model for hypothesis testing. Findings: The findings demonstrate that perceived usefulness (PU) is insignificant when online learning is the only feasible learning strategy. Technical system quality (TSQ) was found to be positively related to perceived ease of use (PEU), attitude (ATT), and student satisfaction, while quality of content (QC) was found to be positively related to PEU and student satisfaction. The remaining hypotheses were rejected. These findings are expected to transform various student attitude, leading to the cognitive components of PEU and PU and ultimately contributing to student satisfaction. In line with the government's desire to transform digital education in higher education, TSQ and QC constitute a framework for shaping the affective components of students' attitude. Attitude, in turn, drives students' PEU and PU, which are two critical factors of the Technology Acceptance Model that serve as the main determinants of student satisfaction. Significance: The study demonstrates that instructors can use a variety of strategies to increase student satisfaction with online education, which can be beneficial even in the post-COVID era. The findings can aid education providers in implementing necessary changes to improve online learning for their students in the future. In addition, the study reveals that through the pandemic, students have become more resilient and have begun to value online learning, highlighting the importance of considering the long-term effects of online learning on student satisfaction.

Background: Prostate cancer is now one of the most prevalent cancers in men in Asia. As the average life expectancy of Asian males with prostate cancer increases with the availability of treatment options, the possible risk of cardiac-related adverse effects arising from androgen-receptor-targeted agents (ARTAs) may be increased due to the greater exposure. We aim to perform a meta-analysis on the incidence of cardiac-related adverse events in Asian patients with prostate cancer treated with ARTAs. Materials and methods: Databases were thoroughly searched for relevant articles. The Patient Intervention Comparison Outcome Study type model was used to frame our clinical question, and 2 independent authors went through several rounds of screening to select the final included studies. A meta-analysis was conducted using the Cochran–Mantel–Haenszel method. Quality assessment was carried out with the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool RoB 2. Results: Seven randomized controlled trials were included for the final meta-analysis. Use of ARTA in Asian men did not show any significant increase in the total number of cardiac-related adverse events (risk ratio [RR]: 1.66 [0.84–3.26], p = 0.14). However, there was increase in incidence of hypertension (RR: 2.30 [1.41–3.73], p = 0.0008) and hypertension crises (RR: 16.87 [2.13–133.34], p = 0.007). A subgroup analysis of the type of ARTA used showed enzalutamide having the highest risk of hypertension (RR: 5.86 [2.10–16.38], p = 0.0008). Conclusion: :Although ARTAs did not show any significant increase in incidence of cardiac-related adverse events, there is an increased risk of hypertension especially with the use of enzalutamide. With this knowledge, closer blood pressure monitoring is needed for patients started on ARTA, especially enzalutamide.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the perioperative, oncological, and functional outcomes between single-port robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (SP-RARP) and multiport robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (MP-RARP) via a meta-analysis. METHODS: For relevant articles, three electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, were searched from their inception until January 15, 2022. A meta-analysis has been reported in line with PRISMA 2020 and AMSTAR Guidelines. The risk ratio and weighted mean difference (MD) were applied for the comparison of dichotomous and continuous variables with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Of the 368 retrieved abstracts, 41 underwent full-text review, and seven studies were included in the final analysis, comprising a total cohort of 1,934 cases of RARP (355 SP-RARP cases and 1,579 MP-RARP cases). As urbanization accelerates and buildings become more complex, fire emergency evacuation has become increasingly challenging. Traditional evacuation plans often struggle with slow response times and suboptimal path planning in real-time dynamic and complex fire scenarios. To address these issues, this study proposes the IoT-based DWM-Evac model for fire emergency evacuation path planning. The model leverages IoT technology by using various sensors placed inside buildings to monitor fire incidents and spread in real-time, collecting critical data such as temperature, smoke concentration, and flame location. It integrates Dynamic Graph Neural Networks (DGNN), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), and Markov Decision Process (MDP) to enhance path efficiency and safety. Experimental results indicate that the DWM-Evac model achieves an average evacuation time of 315 s in a virtual mall environment, 25 s shorter than traditional plans, with an average path length of 255 meters and a path safety score of 0.92, higher than the traditional plan’s 0.88. The application of IoT in fire emergency management not only improves response speed but also optimizes path planning, significantly enhancing personnel safety.

Multiplicative thinking is important for students’ learning of key topics in mathematics such as algebra, geometry, measurement, fractions, statistics, and probability. This study employed an embedded mixed-method approach to investigate primary school teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge for developing multiplicative thinking in students. The study participants (n = 62) were primary school teachers in Australia at different levels of teaching experience, from preservice teachers to novice, experienced, and expert teachers. Teachers completed a carefully designed questionnaire, and a model of Teacher Capacity was the framework for instrument design and data analysis. The investigation in this research focused on three key teaching stages for developing multiplicative thinking: transitional, multiplicative, and proportional reasoning. Estimated marginal means, pairwise comparison, and regression analysis statistical tests were conducted using SPSS 2.0. The results highlight specific areas requiring attention in teacher professional development and preparation programs to enhance teachers’ capacity to effectively support students’ learning and development around multiplicative thinking. For example, there is a need to enhance teachers’ capacity for multiplicative thinking during transitional teaching and the need to emphasize the development of teachers’ knowledge of students and the design of instruction.
