We use scanning tunneling spectroscopy to show directly that the conduction band density of states (DOS) of GaAs1−xNx with low nitrogen (N) content x is enhanced about 0.5 eV above the band edge, followed by a decrease at higher energy. The structure of the measured DOS is in excellent agreement with calculations based on a Green’s-function formalism taking into account different N environments. This analysis highlights the inclusion of N-N pairs and the validity of the Green’s-function approach to describe the band structure of dilute nitride and related extreme semiconductor alloys.

The 4,5-diamine-2,6-dimercaptopyrimidine (DADMcP) compound is an interesting multifunctional species exhibiting a rather complex tautomerism, encompassing nine tautomeric forms. Investigation of tautomerism in this compound has been carried out by means of FTIR spectroscopy, in association with ab-initio HF/SCF and DFT calculations. According to this study three tautomers are energetically favored; the thione form being the most stable one. The theoretical vibrational spectra of such tautomeric forms have been successfully simulated by means of DFT calculations, allowing the elucidation and assignment of the complex composition of the vibrational bands observed for the mixture of isomers. O estudo da tautomeria nesse composto foi realizado por meio da espectroscopia FTIR em associação com cálculos ab-initio HF/SCF e DFT. De acordo com os resultados teóricos, três tautômeros são favorecidos energeticamente, sendo a tiona a forma a mais estável. Os espectros vibracionais das formas tautoméricas mais estáveis foram simulados através de cálculos de DFT, permitindo a atribuição e elucidação do quadro complexo de bandas vibracionais observado experimentalmente, envolvendo a mistura de isômeros.

In dem Feldexperiment ARKTIS 93 sind Kaltluftausbrüche in der Nähe Spitzber- gens von ihrem Ausgangspunkt über dem arktischen Packeis über eine Entfer- nung von mehreren hundert Kilometern hinweg untersucht worden. Mit i,n si,tu- Messungen zweiq Flugzeuge wurde die Entwicklung der Grenzschichtbewölkung über etwa 300 km dokumentiert. Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit sind die dabei durchgeführten Messungen zur Wolkenmikrophysik. Verwendet wurden kommerzielle Geräte zur Messung von Teilchengrößen. Zur Erfassung größerer Partikel dienten optisch abbildende Geräte in unterschied- lichen Ausführungen. Die Größenverteilung kleiner Wolkenteilchen wurde mit Streusonden des Typs FSSP-100 gemessen. Diese Streusonden sind primär für Wassertropfen konzipiert, in den Wolken befindliche tristeilchen können zu Fehl- messungen der FSSP führen. Eine Verfälschung der Meßergebnisse kann aber vermieden werden, indem der Meßbereich begrenzt wird. Die Kombination mit einer optisch abbildenden Greyprobe ermöglicht eine verläßliche Ableitung von Größenverteilungen im Meßbereich 2-635 ¡;m Durchmesser. Im Rahmen einer umfassenden Fehlerbetrachtung werden diese und andere gerätebedingte Meßun- genauigkeiten diskutiert und deren Einfluß auf die abgeleiteten Größen mittlerer und effektiver Durchmesser, Teilchenzahldichte und Wassergehalt abgeschätzt. Die Fehlerfortpflanzungsrechnung zeigt, daß bei hinreichend langen Mittelungs- intervallen alle Größen, mit Ausnahme des Wassergehalts, auf besser a\s 20% genau zu bestimmen sind. Die größere Ungenauigkeit im Wassergehalt ist auf dessen eisförmige Komponente zuruckzuführen. Große Teilchen sind überwie- gend gefroren und weisen eine Vielfalt an Formen auf. Die Ableitung ihrer Masse aus der gemessenen Größe erfolgt über einen empirischen Zusammenhang, der um etwa einen Faktor drei unsicher ist. In Wolkenabschnitten mit hohem Anteil großer Teilchen erreicht die Unsicherheit in der Bestimmung des \A/assergehalts daher über 100 %. Von den insgesamt elf Meßtagen während ARKTIS 93 erwiesen sich der 20., 24. und 25. Màrz als besonders geeignet für die Untersuchung der \Volkenmikro- physik. Diese drei Tage bilden daher die Grundlage der in dieser Arbeit vorge- stellten Auswertungen. Das Untersuchungsgebiet lag westlich von Spitzbergen. In einer südlichen Strömung floß kalte Luft vom arktischen Eis südwärts über den eisfreien Ozean. Hohe Wärmeflüsse vom Meer in die Atmosphäre führten zu starker Konvektion in der Grenzschicht. Es bildeten sich typische rollenförmige Konvektionsmuster, im Satellitenbild als Wolkenstraßen zu erkennen, die nach mehreren hundert Kilometern in zellulare Konvektion übergingen. Anhand der Daten des südlichsten Meßabschnitts, etwa 280km vom Eisrand entfernt, wird die Vertikalstruktur der Wolken ausführlich dargestellt. Die Wol- kenschicht war dort mehrere hundert Meter mächtig und in Wolkenstraßen or- ganisiert. Der horizontale Bedeckungsgrad betrug 0.8-0.95 in der Schichtmitte und nahm zu den Rändern stark ab. Die Untersuchung der Vertikalstruktur derWolken ergibt ein Bild, wie es für konvektive Grenzschichtbewölkung nicht unty- pisch ist. Der gemessene mittlere Teilchendurchmesser stieg von etwa 4.5 ¡tm an der Wolkenbasis zum Oberrand linear an. Die Anzahldichte blieb nahezu kon- stant, mit einem leichten Maximum in der Mitte der Wolkenschicht im Bereich 80-110cm-3. Der Flüssigwassergehalt nahm mit der Höhe zu,lag aber deutlich unter dem adiabatischen Flüssigwassergehalt. Zum Vergleich dieser Ergebnisse mit Literaturwerten müssen Beobachtun- gen aus anderen geographischen Breiten herangezogen werden, da für die Arktis bislang keine Messungen zur Mikrophysik konvektiver Grenzschichtwolken exi- stieren. Die gemessene Teilchenzahldichte ist typisch für Wolken in wenig ver- schmutzten maritimen Luftmassen. Die mittlere Teilchengröße war geringer als in vergleichbaren Messungen. Auffällig ist der extrem niedrige Wassergehalt. In geschlossenen Stratokumulusschichten kann nahezu der adiabatische Flüssig- wassergehalt beobachtet werden kann. Für einzelne Kumuli finden sich in der Literatur deutlich niedrigere Angaben, bis hinab zu einem Viertel dieses Wertes, verursacht durch Entrainment trockener Umgebungsluft. Die hier vorgestellten Messungen zeigen ein noch niedrigeres Verhältnis zwischen gemessenem und adia- batischem Wassergehalt von nur etwa 0.1. Derartig geringe Wassergehalte sind in der Literatur noch nirgends beschrieben. Trotz des niedrigen Wassergehalts kam es an zwei der drei Meßtagen zu Nie- derschlagsbildung. Ein Vergleich der Messungen an verschiedenen Positionen zeigt, daß sich die Wolkenmikrophysik im Verlauf eines Kaltluftausbruchs nicht wesentlich änder- te. Im Fall starker Niederschläge sank die Teilchenzahldichte der Wolken ge- ringfügig. Teilchengröße und Wassergehalt an der Wolkenbasis sowie der Anstieg dieser Größen mit der Höhe zeigten aber keine signifikante Abhängigkeit von der Entfernung zum Eisrand. Ein Vergleich mit in der Literatur veröffentlichten Berechnungen der Wasser- und Temperaturbilanz der beobachteten Kaltluftausbrüche verdeutlicht die Be- deutung der Messungen für die Untersuchung von Grenzschichtprozessen. So führt eine Berücksichtigung des gemessenen geringen Wassergehalts zu einer si- gnifikanten Erhöhung der berechneten Regenrate, und die Bedeutung von Kalt- luftausbrüchen für den Transport von Flüssigwasser ist wesentlich geringer als bisher angenommen. Cold air outbreaks (CAOs) in the vicinity of Spitsbergen \Mere the main topic of the field campaign ARKTIS 93. Starting over the arctic ice, CAOs were stu- died over a distance of several hundred kilometers. Two airplanes documented the development of boundary layer clouds. This thesis concentrates on cloud microphysics measurements taken during these flights. Standard commercial instruments were used for measuring cloud particle size distributions. Relatively large particles were recorded using optical a,rray probes. Small cloud droplets were measured with forward scattering probes FSSP-100. These scattering probes are designed and calibrated for sizing water droplets and may fail in the presence of ice. A corruption of the results can be avoided by limiting the measurement range to the lower size channels. Combining the FSSP data with those of the 2D-Greyprobe provides reliable size distributions in a range of 2-625pm particle diameter. All known measurement uncertainties are discussed and a detailed error propagation with respect to mean and effective diameter, number density, and water content is given. It is shown that, averaging over a sufficient long time, all these quantities besides the water content can be derived with an accuracy of better than 20%, The water content has a larger uncertainty due to the presence of ice. Large particles are mostly frozen and show a variety of different shapes. The estimation of ice particle mass from their measured size is done using an empirical relation and has an error factor of about three. Therefore, in cloud sections with a large amount of ice the uncertainty in measuring water contents exceeds L00%. Out of eleven measurement cases in CAOs during ARKTIS 93 March 20, 24, and 25 came out to be most suitable for studying cloud microphysics. All results shown here are based on these three days. The measurement area \Mas located west of the Spitsbergen island. With northerly winds cold air from the arctic ice flew southward over the ice free ocean. Large heat fluxes from the ocean into the atmosphere induced strong boundary layer convection. Near the ice edge the convection patterns were organized in rolls parallel to the mean wind. In the updraft regions cloud streets developed. A few hundred kilometers downstream the rolls transformed into cellular convection. A detailed study of the vertical structure of the boundary layer clouds is given using data from about 280 km south the ice edge. Here the cloud layer was several hundred meters thick and organized in cloud streets. The horizontal cloud coverage was 0.8-0.95 in the middle of the cloud layer, decreasing towards the boundaries. The vertical structure wa,s found to be roughly as expected for convective boundary layer clouds. The mean particle diameter increased linearly with height starting from about 4.5 pm at cloud base. Number density was nearly constant with a slight maximum of 80-110 cm-3 in the middle of the cloud layer. Liquid water content increased with height above cloud base, but was significantly smaller than the adiabatic liquid water content.Up to now there are no published measurements concerning cloud microphy- sics in arctic convective boundary layer clouds. In comparison with results from other geographic regions the measured particle number density is quite typical for maritime clouds. The mean diameter is smaller than reported in other pa- pers. The most interesting finding is the extremely low water content. In layers of closed stratocumulus the measured water content is typically very close to the adiabatic water content. For single cumuli the reported ratio of measured to adiabatic water content is lower, down to 0.25. The measurements shown here result in a ratio of about 0.1, the lowest water content reported in literature. Despite the low water content at two of the three measurement days precipi- tation occurred. Results from different positions show that there was no significant change in cloud microphysics along the CAOs. In case of strong precipitation the cloud particle number density decreased slightly. No dependency on the distance to the ice edge of the mean particle diameter and water content at cloud base or of the increase of this quantities with height could be found. An estimate of the impact of the findings presented here on published cal- culations of the temperature and liquid water budget of these CAOs shows the consequences of this measurements for the study of boundary layer processes. Using the measured water content instead of an assumed higher one results in a significantly higher rain rate. This reduces the importance of CAOs for the horizontal transport of liquid water.

We estimate the annual financial losses resulting from wildlife damage to major crops and livestock in Nebraska. For each wildlife species, the damage problem is presented along with a description of how the estimate was made. Field crop estimates include losses from Plains pocket gophers (Geomys bursarius), commensal rodents (Rattus norvegicus and Mus musculus), field rodents in grain fields (e.g. Peromyscus maniculatus, Dipodomys ordi, Spermophilus tridecemlineatus), house sparrows (Passer domesticus), blackbirds (e.g. Agelaius phoeniceus and Ouiscalus guiscula), lagomorphs (Sylvilagus floridanus, Lepus californicus, and L. townsendii), deer (Odocoileus virginianus and Q. hemionus), voles (Microtus spp.), and beaver (Castor canadensis). Livestock estimates include losses from commensal rodents, coyotes (Canis latrans), European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus), and house sparrows. Estimated values of the crop and livestock resources damaged total approximately $37 million annually. Further study is needed to refine such estimates, as well as to assess the positive benefits of various wild vertebrates.

Different combinations of fixation and dehydration procedures for the preparation of permanent mounts of marine nematodes of the subfamily Oncholaiminae were tested and compared. Qualitatively, the best specimens resulted from Seinhorst's killing method and fixation in FAA; the dehydration procedure was of less significance. Quantitatively, no significant modification of measurements resulted from any of the methods used. Sources of error in measurements are discussed.
