Abstract

Using a model solution, we have demonstrated the feasibility of using titanium(IV) oxyhydroxyphosphate-based ion-exchange materials for extraction of Cs+ and Sr2+ cations from multicomponent high-salt bottom residues. Conditions for the use of the ion exchangers have been optimized experimentally: liquid : solid = 50, t = 25°C. It has been shown that Cs+ is effectively extracted at pH 2, whereas Sr2+, at pH 8. The zirconium-modified sorbent has been shown to have a higher affinity for metal cations. The modified sorbent is especially selective for cesium in the acid pH region owing to the higher mobility of the protons of its hydrogen phosphate groups in comparison with the unmodified sorbent composition. Abstract

Background: The aim of the present study was to examine the composition and content of the polysaccharide complex and polysaccharide fractions from yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus L.) rhizomes growing in Russian Federation (Moscow region). Materials and Methods: Traditional pharmacognostic methods were used in the analysis of polysaccharides as biologically active substances. The total amount of polysaccharides was determined by a gravimetric procedure with alcohol precipitation. Fractions of polysaccharides were isolated by sequential changing of solvents. The content of monosaccharides was determined by the method of high-performance liquid chromatography with refractometric detection (HPLC-RID) after acid hydrolysis. HPLC-RID procedure was performed using Chromatograph Agilent 1260 Infinity, Sugar-Pak column (300x6.5 mm), and isocratic elution mode. Results: Polysaccharide complex was isolated, the total content of polysaccharides in the rhizomes of I. pseudacorus was determined, as well as their distribution by fractions (water-soluble polysaccharides, pectic substances, hemicellulose A, hemicellulose B), the composition of individual sugars (glucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, rhamnose, arabinose) was determined for each fraction. All rights reserved.The significance of the research problem is conditioned by the influence of global mass media on personality, providing it a unique ability to access information from anywhere in the world. To achieve the state when the identity of the student can feel confident in the process of choice and decision making, it is important to teach students the skills of critical thinking. In this regard, this paper is aimed to identify trends in didactic and pedagogical solutions to the problem. A leading research method is a constructive monitoring that allows using for the concept of “critical thinking” of the modern sense, due to the characteristics of the global information environment. The paper reveals the typology of thinking, the structure and content of its kinds; reveals peculiarities of process of formation of students’ critical thinking, defining transformations of the learning content (interdisciplinary units) and learning technologies (interactive, design, computer); justifies the set of didactic tendencies of forming of students’ critical thinking. Productivity of the revealed complex of didactic tendencies for students’ critical thinking formation is proved. The paper submissions can be useful for teachers, listeners of the system of qualification’s improvement and retraining of teachers, methodologists, post-graduates and University students.

This paper presents a study aimed at determining the weight ratio of oxide additives for obtaining high-voltage ceramics in the ZnO–Bi2O3–Sb2O3–Al2O3–Co3O4 system containing 90 wt % ZnO, with a leakage current density under 1 μA/cm2. The ceramic containing the oxide additives in the ratio Bi2O3 : Sb2O3 : Al2O3 : Co3O4 = 0.25 : 0.17 : 1.4 : 1.4 has a nonlinearity coefficient as high as α = 69, a leakage current density as low as Il = 0.4 μA/cm2, and a breakdown voltage Vb = 4.1 kV/mm. Abstract

Objective: Self-perceived health status may be helpful in identifying patients at high risk for adverse outcomes. The Euro Heart Survey on Coronary Revascularization (EHS-CR) provided an opportunity to explore whether impaired health status was a predictor of 1-year mortality in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing angiographic procedures. Methods: Data from the EHS-CR that included 5619 patients from 31 member countries of the European Society of Cardiology were used. Inclusion criteria for the current study were completion of a self-report measure of health status, the EuroQol Questionnaire (EQ-5D) at discharge and information on 1-year follow-up, resulting in a study population of 3786 patients. Results: The 1-year mortality was 3.2% (n = 120). Survivors reported fewer problems on the five dimensions of the EQ-5D as compared with non-survivors. Abstract

Aims: Revascularization in patients with coronary artery disease changed over the last two decades, favouring the number of patients treated by means of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) when compared with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Many randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been performed to compare these two competing revascularization techniques. Because of the strict enrolment criteria of RCTs in which highly selected patients are recruited, the applicability of the results may be limited in clinical practice. The current study evaluates to what extent patients in clinical practice were similar to those who participated in RCTs comparing PCI with CABG. Methods and results: Clinical characteristics and 1-year outcome of 4713 patients enrolled in the Euro Heart Survey on Coronary Revascularization were compared with 8647 patients who participated in 14 major RCTs, comparing PCI with CABG. In addition, we analysed which proportion of survey patients would have disqualified for trial participation (n = 3033, 64%), aiming at identifying differences between trial-eligible and trial-ineligible survey patients. In general, important differences were observed between trial participants and survey patients. Patients in clinical practice were older, more often had comorbid conditions, single-vessel disease, and left main stem stenosis when compared with trial participants. Almost identical differences were observed between trial-eligible and trial-ineligible survey patients. In clinical practice, PCI was the treatment of choice, even in patients who were trial-ineligible (46% PCI, 26% CABG, 28% medical). PCI remained the preferred treatment option in patients with multi-vessel disease (57% in trial-eligible and 40% in trial-ineligible patients, respectively, P < 0.001); yet, the risk profile of patients treated by PCI was better than that for patients treated either by CABG or by medical therapy. In the RCTs, there was no mortality difference between PCI and CABG. In clinical practice, however, we observed 1-year unadjusted survival benefit for PCI vs. CABG (2.9 vs. 5.4%, P < 0.001). Survival benefit was only observed in trial-ineligible patients (3.3 vs. 6.2%, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Many patients in clinical practice were not represented in RCTs. Moreover, only 36% of these patients were considered eligible for participating in a trial comparing PCI with CABG. We demonstrated that RCTs included younger patients with a better cardiovascular risk profile when compared with patients in everyday clinical practice. This study highlights the disparity between patients in clinical practice and patients in whom the studies that provide the evidence for treatment guidelines are performed. © The European Society of Cardiology 2006.
