Phase selection in Ti-Zr-Hf-Al high-entropy alloys was investigated by in-situ high-energy X$-$ray diffraction, single-crystal X$-$ray diffraction, and density-functional theory based electronic-structure methods that address disorder and vacancies, predicting formation enthalpy and chemical short-range order (SRO). Samples with varying Al content were synthesized, characterized, and computationally assessed to ascertain the composition-dependent phase selection, as increased Al content often acts as a stabilizer of a body-centered-cubic structure. Equiatomic TiZrHfAl was especially interesting due to its observed bcc superstructure - a variant of $\gamma-$brass with 4 vacancies per cell (not 2 as in $\gamma-$brass). We highlight how vacancy ordering mediates selection of this variant of $\gamma-$brass, which is driven by vacancy-atom SRO that dramatically suppress all atomic SRO. ZrMnP and HfMnP single crystals are grown by a self-flux growth technique and structural as well as temperature dependent magnetic and transport properties are studied. Both compounds have an orthorhombic crystal structure. ZrMnP and HfMnP are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures around $370$~K and $320$~K respectively. The spontaneous magnetizations of ZrMnP and HfMnP are determined to be $1.9$~$\mu_\textrm{B}$/f.u. and $2.1$~$\mu_\textrm{B}$/f.u. respectively at $50$~K. The magnetocaloric effect of ZrMnP in term of entropy change ($\Delta S$) is estimated to be $-6.7$ kJm$^{-3}$K$^{-1}$ around $369$~K. The easy axis of magnetization is [100] for both compounds, with a small anisotropy relative to the [010] axis. At $50$~K, the anisotropy field along the [001] axis is $\sim4.6$~T for ZrMnP and $\sim10$~T for HfMnP. Such large magnetic anisotropy is remarkable considering the absence of rare-earth elements in these compounds. The first principle calculation correctly predicts the magnetization and hard axis orientation for both compounds, and predicts the experimental HfMnP anisotropy field within 25 percent. More importantly, our calculations suggest that the large magnetic anisotropy comes primarily from the Mn atoms suggesting that similarly large anisotropies may be found in other 3d transition metal compounds.

Single crystals of Fe5B2P were grown by self-flux growth technique. Structural and magnetic properties are studied. The Curie temperature of Fe5B2P is determined to be 655$pm$2K. The saturation magnetization is determined to be 1.72 MuB/Fe at 2K. The temperature variation of the anisotropy constant K1 is determined for the first time, reaching ~0.50 MJ/m3 at 2K, and it is comparable to that of hard ferrites. The saturation magnetization is found to be larger than the hard ferrites. The first principle calculations of saturation magnetization and anisotropy constant are found to be consistent with the experimental results.

The article addresses the possibility of alloy elements in MnBi which may modify the thermodynamic stability of the NiAs-type structure without significantly degrading the magnetic properties. The addition of small amounts of Rh and Mn provides an improvement in the thermal stability with some degradation of the magnetic properties. The small amounts of Rh and Mn additions in MnBi stabilize an orthorhombic phase whose structural and magnetic properties are closely related to the ones of the previously reported high-temperature phase of MnBi (HT~MnBi). To date, the properties of the HT~MnBi, which is stable between $613$ and $719$~K, have not been studied in detail because of its transformation to the stable low-temperature MnBi (LT~MnBi), making measurements near and below its Curie temperature difficult. The Rh-stabilized MnBi with chemical formula Mn$_{1.0625-x}$Rh$_{x}$Bi [$x=0.02(1)$] adopts a new superstructure of the NiAs/Ni$_2$In structure family. It is ferromagnetic below a Curie temperature of $416$~K. The critical exponents of the ferromagnetic transition are not of the mean-field type but are closer to those associated with the Ising model in three dimensions. The magnetic anisotropy is uniaxial; the anisotropy energy is rather large, and it does not increase when raising the temperature, contrary to what happens in LT~MnBi. The saturation magnetization is approximately $3$~$\mu_B$/f.u. at low temperatures. While this exact composition may not be application ready, it does show that alloying is a viable route to modifying the stability of this class of rare-earth-free magnet alloys., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

We present a detailed study of R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) single crystals by measurements of crystal structure, stoichiometry, temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and specific heat. This series forms with partial Ni occupancy with x varying from ~ 0.1 for R = La to ~0.7 for R = Nd. The electrical resistivity of this series follows metallic behavior at high temperatures. Determination of clear anisotropies as well as antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures for R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = Ce, Pr and Nd) have been made. For Pr3Ni1.56Sn7 and Nd3Ni1.34Sn7, multiple magnetic transitions take place upon cooling. Metamagnetic transitions in this family (R = Ce, Pr and Nd) were detected for applied magnetic fields below 70 kOe. An H-T phase diagram of Ce3Ni1.69Sn7 was assembled to shed light on its low field properties and to rule out possible quantum critical effects., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, and 5 tables

We have used single crystal X-ray diffraction methods to establish the crystal structures of a compound in the Pd-Mn-Si system and in the Pd-Mn-Ge system. The title compounds have structures related to the Fe$_2$P structure type and are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures above the room temperature. Density functional electronic structure calculations help to understand the nature of the local moment ferromagnetism in these compounds. However neither the electronic structure calculations nor the magnetic measurements provide any evidence of half-metallic behavior., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures
