Abstract: We prove sharp bounds on the virtual degrees introduced by Larsen and Shalev. This leads to improved bounds on characters of symmetric groups. We then sharpen bounds of Liebeck and Shalev concerning the Witten zeta function. Our main application is a characterization of the fixed-point free conjugacy classes whose associated random walk mixes in 2 steps., Comment: v2: 44 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Abstract: Our purpose is to study the effect of binary companions located within the first 10 stellar radii from the primary AGB star. In this work, we target the mass-losing carbon star V Hydrae (V Hya), looking for signatures of its companion in the dust forming region of the atmosphere. The star was observed in the L- and N-bands with the VLTI/MATISSE instrument at low spectral resolution. We reconstructed images of V Hya's photosphere and surroundings using the two bands and compared our interferometric observables with VLTI/MIDI and VISIR archival data. To constrain the dust properties, we used DUSTY to model the spectral energy distribution. The star is dominated by dust emission in the L- and N- bands. The VISIR image confirms the presence of a large-scale dusty circumstellar envelope surrounding V Hya. The MATISSE reconstructed images show asymmetric and elongated structures in both infrared bands. In the L-band, we detected an elongated shape of approximately 15 mas, likely to be of photospheric origin. In the N-band, we found a 20 mas extension North-East from the star, and perpendicular to the L-band elongated axis. The position angle and the size of the N-band extension match the prediction of the companion position at MATISSE epoch. By comparing MATISSE N-band with MIDI data, we deduce that the elongation axis in the N-band has rotated since the previous interferometric measurements 13 years ago, supporting the idea that the particle enhancement is related to the dusty clump moving along with the companion. The MATISSE images unveil the presence of a dust enhancement at the companion position, opening new doors for further analysis on the binary interaction with an AGB component., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Stellar mergers and accretion events have been crucial in shaping the evolution of the Milky Way (MW). These events have been dynamically identified and chemically characterised using red giants and main-sequence stars. RR Lyrae (RRL) variables can play a crucial role in tracing the early formation of the MW since they are ubiquitous, old (t$\ge$10 Gyr) low-mass stars and accurate distance indicators. We exploited Data Release 3 of the GALAH survey to identify 78 field RRLs suitable for chemical analysis. Using synthetic spectra calculations, we determined atmospheric parameters and abundances of Fe, Mg, Ca, Y, and Ba. Most of our stars exhibit halo-like chemical compositions, with an iron peak around [Fe/H]$\approx -$1.40, and enhanced Ca and Mg content. Notably, we discovered a metal-rich tail, with [Fe/H] values ranging from $-$1 to approximately solar metallicity. This sub-group includes almost ~1/4 of the sample, it is characterised by thin disc kinematics and displays sub-solar $\alpha$-element abundances, marginally consistent with the majority of the MW stars. Surprisingly, they differ distinctly from typical MW disc stars in terms of the s-process elements Y and Ba. We took advantage of similar data available in the literature and built a total sample of 535 field RRLs for which we estimated kinematical and dynamical properties. We found that metal-rich RRLs (1/3 of the sample) likely represent an old component of the MW thin disc. We also detected RRLs with retrograde orbits and provided preliminary associations with the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus, Helmi, Sequoia, Sagittarius, and Thamnos stellar streams., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 29 pages, 20 figures

Abstract: Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. Abstract: The Gaia satellite has provided the community with three releases containing astrometrical and photometric data as well as by products, such as stellar parameters and variability indicators. By selecting in the Gaia database, one can select stars with the requested characteristics, such as high speed. At present any selection is based on available Gaia releases including a subset of the observations. This, for some stars, can show some limitations, for example there is still not a sufficient number of observations to detect binarity. We investigated a star selected in Gaia EDR3 for its high speed that appears unbound to the Galaxy. We requested high-quality spectra to derive more information on the star. {From the spectroscopic investigation we confirm the low metallicity content of the star, and we derive a detailed chemical composition. The star is poor in carbon and very rich in oxygen: [(C+N+O)/Fe]=+0.65. From the two spectra observed we conclude that the star is in a binary system and from the investigation of the ionisation balance we derive that the star is closer than implied by the Gaia DR3 parallax, and thus has a a lower intrinsic luminosity. The star is probably still unbound, but there is the possibility that it is bound to the Galaxy. 8. Benchmarking the effective temperature scale of red giant branch stellar models: the case of the metal-poor halo giant HD 122563

Abstract: There is plenty of evidence in the literature of significant discrepancies between the observations and models of metal-poor red giant branch stars, in particular regarding the effective temperature, teff, scale. We revisit the benchmark star HD 122563 using the most recent observations from Gaia Data Release 3, to investigate if these new constraints may help in resolving this discrepancy. We review the most recent spectroscopic determinations of the metallicity of HD 122563 [Fe/H], and provide a new assessment of its fundamental parameters, i.e. bolometric luminosity, teff, surface gravity, plus a photometric determination of its metal content. Using these constraints, we compare the position of the star in the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram with various recent sets of stellar evolution tracks. The H-R diagram analysis reveals a significant disagreement between observed and theoretical teff values, when adopting the most recent spectroscopic estimate of [Fe/H]. On the other hand, by using the photometric determination of [Fe/H] some of the selected sets of stellar tracks appear in fair agreement with observations. The sets with discrepant teff can be made to agree with observations either by modifying the prescription adopted to calculate the models' outer boundary conditions, and/or by reducing the adopted value of the mixing length parameter with respect to the solar-calibration. A definitive assessment of whether the teff scale of metal-poor stellar red giant branch models is consistent with observations requires an even more accurate determination of the fundamental parameters of HD 122563 and also a larger sample of calibrators. 9. The memory of Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence

Abstract: In this work, we consider the problem of inferring the initial conditions of a Rayleigh-Taylor mixing zone by measuring the 0D turbulent quantities at an unspecified time. To this aim, we have generated a comprehensive dataset through direct numerical simulations (DNS), focusing on miscible fluids with slight density contrasts. The initial interface deformations in these simulations are characterized by an annular spectrum which is parametrized by four non dimensional numbers. %In order to study the sensitivity of 0D turbulent quantities to the initial interface perturbation distributions, we build a surrogate model for the simulations using a physics-informed neural network (PINN). This allows us to compute the Sobol indices for the turbulent quantities, disentangling the effects of the initial parameters on the growth of the mixing layer. Within a Bayesian framework, we use a Markov chain Monte-Carlo method to determine the posterior distributions of initial conditions given various state variables. %This sheds light on the inertial or diffusive trajectories along with how the initial conditions are progressively forgotten during transition to turbulence. Moreover, it identifies which turbulent quantities are better predictors for the dynamics of Rayleigh-Taylor mixing zones by more effectively retaining the memory of the flow. By inferring the initial conditions and forward propagating its maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate, we propose a strategy to model the Rayleigh-Taylor transition to turbulence.

Abstract: The Gaia satellite has already provided the astronomical community with three data releases, and the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) on board Gaia has provided the radial velocity for 33 million stars. When deriving the radial velocity from the RVS spectra, several stars are measured to have large values. To verify the credibility of these measurements, we selected some bright stars with the modulus of radial velocity in excess of 500\ to be observed with SOPHIE at OHP and UVES at VLT. This paper is devoted to investigating the chemical composition of the stars observed with UVES. We derived atmospheric parameters using Gaia photometry and parallaxes, and we performed a chemical analysis using the code. We find that the sample consists of metal-poor stars, although none have extremely low metallicities. The abundance patterns match what has been found in other samples of metal-poor stars selected irrespective of their radial velocities. We highlight the presence of three stars with low Cu and Zn abundances that are likely descendants of pair-instability supernovae. Two stars are apparently younger than 1\,Ga, and their masses exceed twice the turn-off mass of metal-poor populations. This makes it unlikely that they are blue stragglers because it would imply they formed from triple or multiple systems. We suggest instead that they are young metal-poor stars accreted from a dwarf galaxy. Here, a descent in a permutation $\sigma$ is a pair of consecutive elements $\sigma(i), \sigma(i+1)$ such that $\sigma(i) > \sigma(i+1)$. Likewise, a descent in a rooted tree with labelled vertices is a pair of a parent vertex and a child such that the label of the parent is greater than the label of the child. Abstract: Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Abstract: Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. Beyond these candidates, the associate tables in this Focused Product Release allow the entire community to explore the unique Gaia data for strong lensing studies further., Comment: 35 pages, 60 figures, accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. Abstract: The lattice Boltzmann method, after close to thirty years of presence in computational fluid dynamics has turned into a versatile, efficient and quite popular numerical tool for fluid flow simulations. The lattice Boltzmann method owes its popularity in the past decade to its efficiency, low numerical dissipation and simplicity of its algorithm. Progress in recent years has opened the door for yet another very challenging area of application: Combustion simulations. Combustion is known to be a challenge for numerical tools due to, among many others, the large number of variables and scales both in time and space, leading to a stiff multi-scale problem. In the present work we present a comprehensive overview of models and strategies developed in the past years to model combustion with the lattice Boltzmann method and discuss some of the most recent applications, remaining challenges and prospects.

Abstract: Classical Cepheids (CCs) are solid distance indicators and tracers of young stellar populations. Our aim is to provide iron, oxygen, and sulfur abundances for the largest and most homogeneous sample of Galactic CCs ever analyzed. The current sample covers a wide range in Galactocentric distances (RG), pulsation modes and periods. High-resolution and high S/N spectra collected with different spectrographs were adopted to estimate the atmospheric parameters. Individual distances are based on Gaia trigonometric parallaxes or on near-infrared Period-Luminosity relations. We found that Fe and alpha-element radial gradients based on CCs display a well-defined change in the slope for RG larger than 12 kpc. Radial gradients based on open clusters, covering a wide range in age, display similar trends, meaning that the flattening in the outer disk is an intrinsic feature of the radial gradients since it is independent of age. Empirical evidence indicates that the radial gradient for S is steeper than for Fe. The difference in the slope is a factor of two in the linear fit. We also found that S is, on average, under-abundant compared with O. We performed a detailed comparison with Galactic chemical evolution models and we found that a constant Star Formation Efficiency for RG larger than 12 kpc takes account for the flattening in both Fe and alpha-elements. To further constrain the impact that predicted S yields for massive stars have on radial gradients, we adopted a "toy model" and we found that the flattening in the outermost regions requires a decrease of a factor of four in the current S predictions. Sulfur photospheric abundances, compared with other alpha-elements, have the key advantage of being a volatile element. Abstract: We consider the concatenation of $t$ uniformly random perfect matchings on $2n$ vertices, where the operation of concatenation is inspired by the multiplication of generators of the Brauer algebra $\mathfrak{B}_n(\delta)$. For the resulting random string diagram $\mathsf{Br}_n(t)$, we observe a giant component if and only if $n$ is odd, and as $t\to\infty$ we obtain asymptotic results concerning the number of loops, the size of the giant component, and the number of loops of a given shape. Moreover, we give a local description of the giant component. 20. Modeling gas flows in packed beds with the lattice Boltzmann method: validation against experiments

Abstract: This study aims to validate the lattice Boltzmann method and assess its ability to accurately describe the behavior of gaseous flows in packed beds. To that end, simulations of a model packed bed reactor, corresponding to an experimental bench, are conducted, and the results are directly compared with experimental data obtained by Particle Image Velocimetry measurements. It is found that the lattice Boltzmann solver exhibits very good agreement with experimental measurements. Then, the numerical solver is further used to analyze the effect of the number of packing layers on the flow structure and to determine the minimum bed height above which the changes in flow structure become insignificant. Finally, flow fluctuations in time are discussed. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the behavior of the gas flow in packed bed reactors, opening the door for further investigations involving additionally chemical reactions, as found in many practical applications.

Abstract: The possible impact of temperature differences during crystal growth is investigated in this study. The organic molecule considered is mandelic acid, an important component for the pharmaceutical industry. The productivity of generating pure mandelic acid crystals are largely determined by the growth process. Reaction conditions, purity of the components, supersaturation, temperature, but possibly also temperature gradients play a central role during crystal growth. In this study a numerical model based on a hybrid solver combining the lattice Boltzmann method with finite differences is developed to model the crystallization dynamics of (S)-mandelic acid (S-ma) taking quantitatively into account temperature effects. At first, the fourth-order finite-difference method used to model energy and species conservation is validated. Then, comparisons are carried out regarding temperature changes within the single-crystal growth cell. In practice, the molar heat generation at the crystal interface shows only a small effect on the temperature field in the surrounding domain, with temperature differences below $1.5$ degree. 22. Comparative study of flow fluctuations in ruptured and unruptured intracranial aneurysms: A lattice Boltzmann study

Abstract: Flow fluctuations have recently emerged as a promising hemodynamic metric for understanding the rupture risk of intracranial aneurysms. Several investigations have reported in the literature corresponding flow instabilities using established computational fluid dynamics tools. In this study, the occurrence of flow fluctuations is investigated using either Newtonian or non-Newtonian fluid models in patient-specific intracranial aneurysms using high-resolution lattice Boltzmann method simulations. Flow instabilities are quantified by computing power spectral density, proper orthogonal decomposition and spectral entropy, and fluctuating kinetic energy of velocity fluctuations. Furthermore, these hemodynamic parameters are compared between the ruptured and unruptured aneurysms. Our simulations reveal that the pulsatile inflow through the neck in a ruptured aneurysm is subject to a hydrodynamic instability leading to high-frequency fluctuations around the rupture position throughout the entire cardiac cycle. At other locations, the flow instability is only observed during the deceleration phase; typically, the fluctuations begin there just after peak systole, gradually decay, and the flow returns to its original, laminar pulsatile state during diastole. In the unruptured aneurysm, there is only minimal difference between Newtonian and non-Newtonian results. In the ruptured case, using the non-Newtonian model leads to a considerable increase of the fluctuations within the aneurysm sac.

23. Towards pore-scale simulation of combustion in porous media using a low-Mach hybrid lattice Boltzmann/finite difference solver

Abstract: A hybrid numerical model previously developed for combustion simulations is extended in this article to describe flame propagation and stabilization in porous media. The model, with a special focus on flame/wall interaction processes, is validated via corresponding benchmarks involving flame propagation in channels with both adiabatic and constant-temperature walls. Simulations with different channel widths show that the model can correctly capture the changes in flame shape and propagation speed as well as the dead zone and quenching limit, as found in channels with cold walls. The model is further assessed considering a pseudo 2-D porous burner involving an array of cylindrical obstacles at constant temperature, investigated in a companion experimental study. Furthermore, the model is used to simulate pore-scale flame dynamics in a randomly-generated 3-D porous media. Results are promising, opening the door for future simulations of flame propagation in realistic porous media.

Abstract: We present new empirical infrared Period-Luminosity-Metallicity (PLZ) and Period-Wesenheit-Metallicity (PWZ) relations for RR Lyrae based on the latest Gaia EDR3 parallaxes. The relations are provided in the WISE $W1$ and $W2$ bands, as well as in the $W(W1, V - W1)$ and $W(W2, V - W2)$ Wesenheit magnitudes. The relations are calibrated using a very large sample of Galactic halo field RR Lyrae stars with homogeneous spectroscopic [Fe/H] abundances (over 1,000 stars in the $W1$ band), covering a broad range of metallicities ($-2.5 \lesssim \textrm{[Fe/H]} \lesssim 0.0$). We test the performance of our PLZ and PWZ relations by determining the distance moduli of both galactic and extragalactic stellar associations: the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy in the Local Group (finding $\bar{\mu}_{0}=19.47 \pm 0.06$), the Galactic globular clusters M4 ($\bar{\mu}_{0}=11.16 \pm 0.05$) and the Reticulum globular cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud ($\bar{\mu}_{0}=18.23 \pm 0.06$). The distance moduli determined through all our relations are internally self-consistent (within $\lesssim$ 0.05 mag) but are systematically smaller (by $\sim$ 2-3$\sigma$) than previous literature measurements taken from a variety of methods/anchors. Abstract: Poland has faced several crisis situations related to migration in the past decade. With differences in the scale and origins of incoming people, these crises have triggered various reactions from Polish policy-makers, from the welcoming of non-EU migrants to the implementation of restrictive measures at the Polish border. The present research uses a discursive approach to study the ways in which non-EU migrants are presented and discussed in Poland. By comparing official discourses from Polish authorities during the 2015–2016 migration crisis, the 2021 border crisis with Belarus and following the Russian war on Ukraine in 2022, we analyse how different groups of non-EU migrants are discursively described and considered by political figures. Furthermore, as these crises have important links with the European Union (EU), we also investigate how Poland’s relationship with the EU is envisioned by Polish authorities. Through the discourse analysis carried out, we argue that ‘migrants’ and ‘refugees’ are discursively constructed as opposing groups in a manner that is highly visible. This discursive strategy is instrumentally used to reflect on the perceived deservingness, alterity or proximity of incoming people. We identify one unifying perspective of Poland’s relationship with the EU throughout these crises: Polish authorities are keen to stress the importance of its membership of the EU when benefiting from the latter’s restriction of migration to Europe.

Abstract: Aims. In this work we use the Gaia DR3 set of ultracool dwarf candidates and complement the Gaia spectrophotometry with additional photometry in order to characterise its global properties. This includes the inference of the distances, their locus in the Gaia colour-absolute magnitude diagram and the (biased through selection) luminosity function in the faint end of the Main Sequence. We study the overall changes in the Gaia RP spectra as a function of spectral type. We study the UCDs in binary systems, attempt to identify low-mass members of nearby young associations, star forming regions and clusters, and analyse their variability properties. Results. We detect 57 young, kinematically homogeneous groups some of which are identified as well known star forming regions, associations and clusters of different ages. We find that the primary members of 880 binary systems with a UCD belong mainly to the thin and thick disk components of the Milky Way. We identify 1109 variable UCDs using the variability tables in the Gaia archive, 728 of which belong to the star forming regions defined by HMAC. We define two groups of variable UCDs with extreme bright or faint outliers. Conclusions. The set of sources identified as UCDs in the Gaia archive contains a wealth of information that will require focused follow-up studies and observations. Abstract: The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100,000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper (arXiv:2206.02901) introduces the survey results. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202,000 spectra of 115,000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022., Comment: 38 pages. Abstract: We present the third data release of the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, GDR3. The GDR3 catalogue is the outcome of the processing of raw data collected with the Gaia instruments during the first 34 months of the mission by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. The GDR3 catalogue contains the same source list, celestial positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and broad band photometry in the G, G$_{BP}$, and G$_{RP}$ pass-bands already present in the Early Third Data Release. 31. Modeling compressed turbulent plasma with rapid viscosity variations

Abstract: We propose two-equations models in order to capture the dynamics of a turbulent plasma undergoing compression and experiencing large viscosity variations. The models account for possible relaminarization phases and rapid viscosity changes through closures dependent on the turbulent Reynolds and on the viscosity Froude numbers. These closures are determined from a data-driven approach using eddy-damped quasi normal markovian simulations. The best model is able to mimic the various self-similar regimes identified in \citet{Viciconte2018} and to recover the rapid transition limits identified by \citet{Coleman1991}.

32. Low Mach number lattice Boltzmann model for turbulent combustion: flow in confined geometries

Abstract: A hybrid lattice Boltzmann/finite-difference solver for low Mach thermo-compressible flows developed in earlier works is extended to more realistic and challenging configurations involving turbulence and complex geometries in the present article. The major novelty here as compared to previous contributions is the application of a more robust collision operator, considerably extending the stability of the original single relaxation time model and facilitating larger Reynolds number flow simulations. Additionally, a subgrid model and the thickened flame approach have also been added allowing for efficient large eddy simulations of turbulent reactive flows in complex geometries. This robust solver, in combination with appropriate treatment of boundary conditions, is used to simulate combustion in two configurations: flame front propagation in a 2-D combustion chamber with several obstacles, and the 3-D PRECCINSTA swirl burner. Time evolution of the flame surface in the 2-D configuration shows very good agreement compared to direct numerical and large eddy simulation results available in the literature. The simulation of the PRECCINSTA burner is first performed in the case of cold flow using two different grid resolutions. Comparisons with experimental data reveal very good agreement even at lower resolution. The model is then used, with a 2-step chemistry and multi-component transport/thermodynamics, to simulate the combustor at operating conditions similar to previously reported experimental/numerical studies for $\phi$=0.83. Results are again in very good agreement compared with available large eddy simulation results as well as experimental data, demonstrating the excellent performance of the hybrid solver.

Abstract: The Gaia mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) has been routinely observing Solar System objects (SSOs) since the beginning of its operations in August 2014. The Gaia data release three (DR3) includes, for the first time, the mean reflectance spectra of a selected sample of 60 518 SSOs, primarily asteroids, observed between August 5, 2014, and May 28, 2017. Each reflectance spectrum was derived from measurements obtained by means of the Blue and Red photometers (BP/RP), which were binned in 16 discrete wavelength bands. We describe the processing of the Gaia spectral data of SSOs, explaining both the criteria used to select the subset of asteroid spectra published in Gaia DR3, and the different steps of our internal validation procedures. In order to further assess the quality of Gaia SSO reflectance spectra, we carried out external validation against SSO reflectance spectra obtained from ground-based and space-borne telescopes and available in the literature. For each selected SSO, an epoch reflectance was computed by dividing the calibrated spectrum observed by the BP/RP at each transit on the focal plane by the mean spectrum of a solar analogue. The latter was obtained by averaging the Gaia spectral measurements of a selected sample of stars known to have very similar spectra to that of the Sun. Finally, a mean of the epoch reflectance spectra was calculated in 16 spectral bands for each SSO. The agreement between Gaia mean reflectance spectra and those available in the literature is good for bright SSOs, regardless of their taxonomic spectral class. We identify an increase in the spectral slope of S-type SSOs with increasing phase angle. Moreover, we show that the spectral slope increases and the depth of the 1 um absorption band decreases for increasing ages of S-type asteroid families., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract: The third release of the Gaia catalogue contains the radial velocities for 33,812,183 stars having effective temperatures ranging from 3100 K to 14,500 K. The measurements are based on the comparison of the observed RVS spectrum (wavelength coverage: 846--870 nm, median resolving power: 11,500) to synthetic data broadened to the adequate Along-Scan Line Spread Function. The additional line-broadening, fitted as it would only be due to axial rotation, is also produced by the pipeline and is available in the catalogue (field name gaia_source:vbroad). To describe the properties of the line-broadening information extracted from the RVS and published in the catalogue, as well as to analyse the limitations imposed by the adopted method, wavelength range, and instrument. We use simulations to express the link existing between the line broadening measurement provided in Gaia Data Release 3 and Vsin(i). We then compare the observed values to the measurements published by various catalogues and surveys (GALAH, APOGEE, LAMOST, ...). While we recommend being cautious in the interpretation of the vbroad measurement, we also find a reasonable global agreement between the Gaia Data Release 3 line broadening values and those found in the other catalogues. We discuss and establish the validity domain of the published vbroad values. The estimate tends to be overestimated at the lower vsini end, and at $T_\mathrm{eff}>7500\,\mathrm{K}$ its quality and significance degrade rapidly when $G_\mathrm{RVS}>10$. Despite all the known and reported limitations, the Gaia Data Release 3 line broadening catalogue contains the measurements obtained for 3,524,677 stars with $T_\mathrm{eff}$\ ranging from 3500 to 14,500 K, and $G_\mathrm{RVS}<12$. Abstract: Context. As part of the third Gaia data release, we present the contributions of the non-stellar and classification modules from the eighth coordination unit (CU8) of the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium, which is responsible for the determination of source astrophysical parameters using Gaia data. This is the third in a series of three papers describing the work done within CU8 for this release. Aims. For each of the five relevant modules from CU8, we summarise their objectives, the methods they employ, their performance, and the results they produce for Gaia DR3. We further advise how to use these data products and highlight some limitations. Methods. The Discrete Source Classifier (DSC) module provides classification probabilities associated with five types of sources: quasars, galaxies, stars, white dwarfs, and physical binary stars. A subset of these sources are processed by the Outlier Analysis (OA) module, which performs an unsupervised clustering analysis, and then associates labels with the clusters to complement the DSC classification. The Quasi Stellar Object Classifier (QSOC) and the Unresolved Galaxy Classifier (UGC) determine the redshifts of the sources classified as quasar and galaxy by the DSC module. Finally, the Total Galactic Extinction (TGE) module uses the extinctions of individual stars determined by another CU8 module to determine the asymptotic extinction along all lines of sight for Galactic latitudes |b| > 5 deg. Results. Gaia DR3 includes 1591 million sources with DSC classifications; 56 million sources to which the OA clustering is applied; 1.4 million sources with redshift estimates from UGC; 6.4 million sources with QSOC redshift; and 3.1 million level 9 HEALPixes of size 0.013 squared degree, where the extinction is evaluated by TGE., Comment: Accepted by A&A. 36 pages, 29 figures, 9 tables

Abstract: Gaia Data Release 3 (Gaia DR3) contains the second release of the combined radial velocities. It is based on the spectra collected during the first 34 months of the nominal mission. The longer time baseline and the improvements of the pipeline made it possible to push the processing limit, from Grvs = 12 in Gaia DR2, to Grvs = 14 mag. In this article, we describe the new functionalities implemented for Gaia DR3, the quality filters applied during processing and post-processing and the properties and performance of the published velocities. For Gaia DR3, several functionalities were upgraded or added. (Abridged) Gaia DR3 contains the combined radial velocities of 33 812 183 stars. With respect to Gaia DR2, the interval of temperature has been expanded from Teff \in [3600, 6750] K to Teff \in [3100, 14500] K for the bright stars ( Grvs \leq 12 mag) and [3100, 6750] K for the fainter stars. The radial velocities sample a significant part of the Milky Way: they reach a few kilo-parsecs beyond the Galactic centre in the disc and up to about 10-15 kpc vertically into the inner halo. The median formal precision of the velocities is of 1.3 km/s at Grvs = 12 and 6.4 km/s at Grvs = 14 mag. The velocity zero point exhibits a small systematic trend with magnitude starting around Grvs = 11 mag and reaching about 400 m/s at Grvs = 14 mag. A correction formula is provided, which can be applied to the published data. The Gaia DR3 velocity scale is in satisfactory agreement with APOGEE, GALAH, GES and RAVE, with systematic differences that mostly do not exceed a few hundreds m/s. The properties of the radial velocities are also illustrated with specific objects: open clusters, globular clusters as well as the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Abstract: With the most recent Gaia data release the number of sources with complete 6D phase space information (position and velocity) has increased to well over 33 million stars, while stellar astrophysical parameters are provided for more than 470 million sources, in addition to the identification of over 11 million variable stars. Using the astrophysical parameters and variability classifications provided in Gaia DR3, we select various stellar populations to explore and identify non-axisymmetric features in the disc of the Milky Way in both configuration and velocity space. Using more about 580 thousand sources identified as hot OB stars, together with 988 known open clusters younger than 100 million years, we map the spiral structure associated with star formation 4-5 kpc from the Sun. We select over 2800 Classical Cepheids younger than 200 million years, which show spiral features extending as far as 10 kpc from the Sun in the outer disc. We also identify more than 8.7 million sources on the red giant branch (RGB), of which 5.7 million have line-of-sight velocities, allowing the velocity field of the Milky Way to be mapped as far as 8 kpc from the Sun, including the inner disc. The spiral structure revealed by the young populations is consistent with recent results using Gaia EDR3 astrometry and source lists based on near infrared photometry, showing the Local (Orion) arm to be at least 8 kpc long, and an outer arm consistent with what is seen in HI surveys, which seems to be a continuation of the Perseus arm into the third quadrant. Meanwhile, the subset of RGB stars with velocities clearly reveals the large scale kinematic signature of the bar in the inner disc, as well as evidence of streaming motions in the outer disc that might be associated with spiral arms or bar resonances. Abstract: We present the General Stellar Parameterizer from Photometry (GSP-Phot), which is part of the astrophysical parameters inference system (Apsis). GSP-Phot is designed to produce a homogeneous catalogue of parameters for hundreds of millions of single non-variable stars based on their astrometry, photometry, and low-resolution BP/RP spectra. These parameters are effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, absolute $M_G$ magnitude, radius, distance, and extinction for each star. GSP-Phot uses a Bayesian forward-modelling approach to simultaneously fit the BP/RP spectrum, parallax, and apparent $G$ magnitude. A major design feature of GSP-Phot is the use of the apparent flux levels of BP/RP spectra to derive, in combination with isochrone models, tight observational constraints on radii and distances. We carefully validate the uncertainty estimates by exploiting repeat Gaia observations of the same source. The data release includes GSP-Phot results for 471 million sources with $G<19$. Typical differences to literature values are 110 K for $T_{\rm eff}$ and 0.2-0.25 for $\log g$, but these depend strongly on data quality. In particular, GSP-Phot results are significantly better for stars with good parallax measurements ($\varpi/\sigma_varpi>20$), mostly within 2kpc. Metallicity estimates exhibit substantial biases compared to literature values and are only useful at a qualitative level. However, we provide an empirical calibration of our metallicity estimates that largely removes these biases. Extinctions $A_0$ and $A_{\rm BP}$ show typical differences from reference values of 0.07-0.09 mag. MCMC samples of the parameters are also available for 95% of the sources. Abstract: The third Gaia data release provides photometric time series covering 34 months for about 10 million stars. For many of those stars, a characterisation in Fourier space and their variability classification are also provided. This paper focuses on intermediate- to high-mass (IHM) main sequence pulsators M >= 1.3 Msun) of spectral types O, B, A, or F, known as beta Cep, slowly pulsating B (SPB), delta Sct, and gamma Dor stars. These stars are often multi-periodic and display low amplitudes, making them challenging targets to analyse with sparse time series. All datasets used in this analysis are part of the Gaia DR3 data release. The photometric time series were used to perform a Fourier analysis, while the global astrophysical parameters necessary for the empirical instability strips were taken from the Gaia DR3 gspphot tables, and the vsini data were taken from the Gaia DR3 esphs tables. We show that for nearby OBAF-type pulsators, the Gaia DR3 data are precise and accurate enough to pinpoint them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We find empirical instability strips covering broader regions than theoretically predicted. In particular, our study reveals the presence of fast rotating gravity-mode pulsators outside the strips, as well as the co-existence of rotationally modulated variables inside the strips as reported before in the literature. We derive an extensive period-luminosity relation for delta Sct stars and provide evidence that the relation features different regimes depending on the oscillation period. Finally, we demonstrate how stellar rotation attenuates the amplitude of the dominant oscillation mode of delta Sct stars.

Abstract: The third Gaia data release contains, beyond the astrometry and photometry, dispersed light for hundreds of millions of sources from the Gaia prism spectra (BP and RP) and the spectrograph (RVS). This data release opens a new window on the chemo-dynamical properties of stars in our Galaxy, essential knowledge for understanding the structure, formation, and evolution of the Milky Way. To provide insight into the physical properties of Milky Way stars, we used these data to produce a uniformly-derived, all-sky catalog of stellar astrophysical parameters (APs): Teff, logg, [M/H], [$\alpha$/Fe], activity index, emission lines, rotation, 13 chemical abundance estimates, radius, age, mass, bolometric luminosity, distance, and dust extinction. We developed the Apsis pipeline to infer APs of Gaia objects by analyzing their astrometry, photometry, BP/RP, and RVS spectra. We validate our results against other literature works, including benchmark stars, interferometry, and asteroseismology. Here we assessed the stellar analysis performance from Apsis statistically. We describe the quantities we obtained, including our results' underlying assumptions and limitations. We provide guidance and identify regimes in which our parameters should and should not be used. Despite some limitations, this is the most extensive catalog of uniformly-inferred stellar parameters to date. These comprise Teff, logg, and [M/H] (470 million using BP/RP, 6 million using RVS), radius (470 million), mass (140 million), age (120 million), chemical abundances (5 million), diffuse interstellar band analysis (1/2 million), activity indices (2 million), H{$\alpha$} equivalent widths (200 million), and further classification of spectral types (220 million) and emission-line stars (50 thousand). Abstract: Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products for the astronomical community to exploit, including astrophysical parameters for a half billion stars. In this work we demonstrate the high quality of these data products and illustrate their use in different astrophysical contexts. We query the astrophysical parameter tables along with other tables in Gaia DR3 to derive the samples of the stars of interest. We validate our results by using the Gaia catalogue itself and by comparison with external data. We have produced six homogeneous samples of stars with high quality astrophysical parameters across the HR diagram for the community to exploit. We first focus on three samples that span a large parameter space: young massive disk stars (~3M), FGKM spectral type stars (~3M), and UCDs (~20K). We provide these sources along with additional information (either a flag or complementary parameters) as tables that are made available in the Gaia archive. We furthermore identify 15740 bone fide carbon stars, 5863 solar-analogues, and provide the first homogeneous set of stellar parameters of the Spectro Photometric Standard Stars. We use a subset of the OBA sample to illustrate its usefulness to analyse the Milky Way rotation curve. We then use the properties of the FGKM stars to analyse known exoplanet systems. We also analyse the ages of some unseen UCD-companions to the FGKM stars. Abstract: Gaia Data Release 3 contains a wealth of new data products for the community. Astrophysical parameters are a major component of this release. They were produced by the Astrophysical parameters inference system (Apsis) within the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. The aim of this paper is to describe the overall content of the astrophysical parameters in Gaia Data Release 3 and how they were produced. In Apsis we use the mean BP/RP and mean RVS spectra along with astrometry and photometry, and we derive the following parameters: source classification and probabilities for 1.6 billion objects, interstellar medium characterisation and distances for up to 470 million sources, including a 2D total Galactic extinction map, 6 million redshifts of quasar candidates and 1.4 million redshifts of galaxy candidates, along with an analysis of 50 million outlier sources through an unsupervised classification. The astrophysical parameters also include many stellar spectroscopic and evolutionary parameters for up to 470 million sources. These comprise Teff, logg, and m_h (470 million using BP/RP, 6 million using RVS), radius (470 million), mass (140 million), age (120 million), chemical abundances (up to 5 million), diffuse interstellar band analysis (0.5 million), activity indices (2 million), H-alpha equivalent widths (200 million), and further classification of spectral types (220 million) and emission-line stars (50 thousand). Abstract: The Gaia Radial Velocity Spectrometer provides the unique opportunity of a spectroscopic analysis of millions of stars at medium-resolution in the near-infrared. This wavelength range includes the Ca II infrared triplet (IRT), which is a good diagnostics of magnetic activity in the chromosphere of late-type stars. Here we present the method devised for inferring the Gaia stellar activity index together with its scientific validation. A sample of well studied PMS stars is considered to identify the regime in which the Gaia stellar activity index may be affected by mass accretion. The position of these stars in the colour-magnitude diagram and the correlation with the amplitude of the photometric rotational modulation is also scrutinised. Three regimes of the chromospheric stellar activity are identified, confirming suggestions made by previous authors on much smaller $R'_{\rm HK}$ datasets. The highest stellar activity regime is associated with PMS stars and RS CVn systems, in which activity is enhanced by tidal interaction. Some evidence of a bimodal distribution in MS stars with $T_{\rm eff}\ge$ 5000 K is also found, which defines the two other regimes, without a clear gap in between. Stars with 3500 K$\le T_{\rm eff} \le$ 5000 K are found to be either very active PMS stars or active MS stars with a unimodal distribution in chromospheric activity. A dramatic change in the activity distribution is found for $T_{\rm eff}\le$3500 K, with a dominance of low activity stars close to the transition between partially- and fully-convective stars and a rise in activity down into the fully-convective regime., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, submitted to A&A

Abstract: Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) contains the first release of magnitudes estimated from the integration of Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) spectra for a sample of about 32.2 million stars brighter than G_RVS~14 mag (or G~15 mag). In this paper, we describe the data used and the approach adopted to derive and validate the G_RVS magnitudes published in DR3. We also provide estimates of the G_RVS passband and associated G_RVS zero-point. We derived G_RVS photometry from the integration of RVS spectra over the wavelength range from 846 to 870 nm. We processed these spectra following a procedure similar to that used for DR2, but incorporating several improvements that allow a better estimation of G_RVS. These improvements pertain to the stray-light background estimation, the line spread function calibration, and the detection of spectra contaminated by nearby relatively bright sources. We calibrated the G_RVS zero-point every 30 hours based on the reference magnitudes of constant stars from the Hipparcos catalogue, and used them to transform the integrated flux of the cleaned and calibrated spectra into epoch magnitudes. The G_RVS magnitude of a star published in DR3 is the median of the epoch magnitudes for that star. We estimated the G_RVS passband by comparing the RVS spectra of 108 bright stars with their flux-calibrated spectra from external spectrophotometric libraries. The G_RVS magnitude provides information that is complementary to that obtained from the G, G_BP, and G_RP magnitudes, which is useful for constraining stellar metallicity and interstellar extinction. The median precision of G_RVS measurements ranges from about 0.006 mag for the brighter stars (i.e. with 3.5 < G_RVS < 6.5 mag) to 0.125 mag at the faint end. The derived G_RVS passband shows that the effective transmittance of the RVS is approximately 1.23 times better than the pre-launch estimate., Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures. Abstract: The Gaia Galactic survey mission is designed and optimized to obtain astrometry, photometry, and spectroscopy of nearly two billion stars in our Galaxy. Yet as an all-sky multi-epoch survey, Gaia also observes several million extragalactic objects down to a magnitude of G~21 mag. Due to the nature of the Gaia onboard selection algorithms, these are mostly point-source-like objects. Using data provided by the satellite, we have identified quasar and galaxy candidates via supervised machine learning methods, and estimate their redshifts using the low resolution BP/RP spectra. We further characterise the surface brightness profiles of host galaxies of quasars and of galaxies from pre-defined input lists. Here we give an overview of the processing of extragalactic objects, describe the data products in Gaia DR3, and analyse their properties. Two integrated tables contain the main results for a high completeness, but low purity (50-70%), set of 6.6 million candidate quasars and 4.8 million candidate galaxies. We provide queries that select purer sub-samples of these containing 1.9 million probable quasars and 2.9 million probable galaxies (both 95% purity). We also use high quality BP/RP spectra of 43 thousand high probability quasars over the redshift range 0.05-4.36 to construct a composite quasar spectrum spanning restframe wavelengths from 72-100 nm., Comment: Accepted to A&A

Abstract: The Gaia DR3 Catalogue contains for the first time about eight hundred thousand solutions with either orbital elements or trend parameters for astrometric, spectroscopic and eclipsing binaries, and combinations of them. This paper aims to illustrate the huge potential of this large non-single star catalogue. Using the orbital solutions together with models of the binaries, a catalogue of tens of thousands of stellar masses, or lower limits, partly together with consistent flux ratios, has been built. Properties concerning the completeness of the binary catalogues are discussed, statistical features of the orbital elements are explained and a comparison with other catalogues is performed. Illustrative applications are proposed for binaries across the H-R diagram. The binarity is studied in the RGB/AGB and a search for genuine SB1 among long-period variables is performed. The discovery of new EL CVn systems illustrates the potential of combining variability and binarity catalogues. Potential compact object companions are presented, mainly white dwarf companions or double degenerates, but one candidate neutron star is also presented. Towards the bottom of the main sequence, the orbits of previously-suspected binary ultracool dwarfs are determined and new candidate binaries are discovered. The long awaited contribution of Gaia to the analysis of the substellar regime shows the brown dwarf desert around solar-type stars using true, rather than minimum, masses, and provides new important constraints on the occurrence rates of substellar companions to M dwarfs. Several dozen new exoplanets are proposed, including two with validated orbital solutions and one super-Jupiter orbiting a white dwarf, all being candidates requiring confirmation. Abstract: Gaia DR3 opens a new era of all-sky spectral analysis of stellar populations thanks to the nearly 5.6 million stars observed by the RVS and parametrised by the GSP-spec module. The all-sky Gaia chemical cartography allows a powerful and precise chemo-dynamical view of the Milky Way with unprecedented spatial coverage and statistical robustness. First, it reveals the strong vertical symmetry of the Galaxy and the flared structure of the disc. Second, the observed kinematic disturbances of the disc -- seen as phase space correlations -- and kinematic or orbital substructures are associated with chemical patterns that favour stars with enhanced metallicities and lower [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios compared to the median values in the radial distributions. This is detected both for young objects that trace the spiral arms and older populations. Several alpha, iron-peak elements and at least one heavy element trace the thin and thick disc properties in the solar cylinder. Third, young disc stars show a recent chemical impoverishment in several elements. Fourth, the largest chemo-dynamical sample of open clusters analysed so far shows a steepening of the radial metallicity gradient with age, which is also observed in the young field population. Finally, the Gaia chemical data have the required coverage and precision to unveil galaxy accretion debris and heated disc stars on halo orbits through their [alpha/Fe] ratio, and to allow the study of the chemo-dynamical properties of globular clusters. Gaia DR3 chemo-dynamical diagnostics open new horizons before the era of ground-based wide-field spectroscopic surveys. Abstract: The second Gaia data release, DR2, contained radial velocities of stars with effective temperatures up to Teff = 6900 K. The third data release, Gaia DR3, extends this up to Teff = 14,500 K. We derive the radial velocities for hot stars (i.e. in the Teff = 6900 - 14,500 K range) from data obtained with the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) on board Gaia. The radial velocities were determined by the standard technique of measuring the Doppler shift of a template spectrum that was compared to the observed spectrum. The RVS wavelength range is very limited. The proximity to and systematic blueward offset of the calcium infrared triplet to the hydrogen Paschen lines in hot stars can result in a systematic offset in radial velocity. For the hot stars, we developed a specific code to improve the selection of the template spectrum, thereby avoiding this systematic offset. With the improved code, and with the correction we propose to the DR3 archive radial velocities, we obtain values that agree with reference values to within 3 km/s (in median). Because of the required S/N for applying the improved code, the hot star radial velocities in DR3 are mostly limited to stars with a magnitude in the RVS wavelength band <= 12 mag., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted by A&A for Gaia Special Issue

Abstract: In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey (GES), the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100,000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article (Gilmore et al.) reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. The GES has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110,000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. The final catalogue has been released through the ESO archive at the end of May 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. Abstract: Mandelic acid is an enantiomer of interest in many areas, in particular for the pharmaceutical industry. One of the approaches to produce enantiopure mandelic acid is through crystallization from an aqueous solution. We propose in this study a numerical tool based on lattice Boltzmann simulations to model crystallization dynamics of (S)-mandelic acid. The solver is first validated against experimental data. It is then used to perform parametric studies concerning the effects of important parameters such as supersaturation and seed size on the growth rate. It is finally extended to investigate the impact of forced convection on the crystal habits. Based on there parametric studies, a modification of the reactor geometry is proposed that should reduce the observed deviations from symmetrical growth with a five-fold habit.
