Abstract

With the development of laws and regulations related to privacy preservation, it has become difficult to collect personal data to perform machine learning. In this context, federated learning, which is distributed learning without sharing personal data, has been proposed. In this paper, we focus on federated learning for user authentication. We show that it is difficult to achieve both privacy preservation and high accuracy with existing methods. To address these challenges, we propose IPFed which is privacy-preserving federated learning using random projection for class embedding. Furthermore, we prove that IPFed is capable of learning equivalent to the state-of-the-art method. Experiments on face image datasets show that IPFed can protect the privacy of personal data while maintaining the accuracy of the state-of-the-art method.

Abstract

Biometric authentication is one of the promising alternatives to standard password-based authentication offering better usability and security. In this work, we revisit the biometric authentication based on "fuzzy signatures" introduced by Takahashi et al. (ACNS'15, IJIS'19). These are special types of digital signatures where the secret signing key can be a "fuzzy" data such as user's biometrics. Compared to other cryptographically secure biometric authentications as those relying on fuzzy extractors, the fuzzy signature-based scheme provides a more attractive security guarantee. However, despite their potential values, fuzzy signatures have not attracted much attention owing to their theory-oriented presentations in all prior works. For instance, the discussion on the practical feasibility of the assumptions (such as the entropy of user biometrics), which the security of fuzzy signatures hinges on, is completely missing. In this work, we revisit fuzzy signatures and show that we can indeed efficiently and securely implement them in practice. At a high level, our contribution is threefold: (i) we provide a much simpler, more efficient, and direct construction of fuzzy signature compared to prior works; (ii) we establish novel statistical techniques to experimentally evaluate the conditions on biometrics that are required to securely instantiate fuzzy signatures; and (iii) we provide experimental results using a real-world finger-vein dataset to show that finger-veins from a single hand are sufficient to construct efficient and secure fuzzy signatures. Our performance analysis shows that in a practical scenario with 112-bits of security, the size of the signature is 1256 bytes, and the running time for signing/verification is only a few milliseconds.

6. Toward Evaluating Re-identification Risks in the Local Privacy Model

Abstract

LDP (Local Differential Privacy) has recently attracted much attention as a metric of data privacy that prevents the inference of personal data from obfuscated data in the local model. However, there are scenarios in which the adversary wants to perform re-identification attacks to link the obfuscated data to users in this model. LDP can cause excessive obfuscation and destroy the utility in these scenarios because it is not designed to directly prevent re-identification. In this paper, we propose a measure of re-identification risks, which we call PIE (Personal Information Entropy). The PIE is designed so that it directly prevents re-identification attacks in the local model. It lower-bounds the lowest possible re-identification error probability (i.e., Bayes error probability) of the adversary. We analyze the relation between LDP and the PIE, and analyze the PIE and utility in distribution estimation for two obfuscation mechanisms providing LDP. Through experiments, we show that when we consider re-identification as a privacy risk, LDP can cause excessive obfuscation and destroy the utility. Abstract

With the growth of image on the web, research on hashing which enables high-speed image retrieval has been actively studied. In recent years, various hashing methods based on deep neural networks have been proposed and achieved higher precision than the other hashing methods. In these methods, multiple losses for hash codes and the parameters of neural networks are defined. They generate hash codes that minimize the weighted sum of the losses. Therefore, an expert has to tune the weights for the losses heuristically, and the probabilistic optimality of the loss function cannot be explained. In order to generate explainable hash codes without weight tuning, we theoretically derive a single loss function with no hyperparameters for the hash code from the probability distribution of the images. By generating hash codes that minimize this loss function, highly accurate image retrieval with probabilistic optimality is performed. We evaluate the performance of hashing using MNIST, CIFAR-10, SVHN and show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art hashing methods., Comment: Accepted by the 26th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing(ICIP2019)

10. Cancelable Indexing Based on Low-rank Approximation of Correlation-invariant Random Filtering for Fast and Secure Biometric Identification

Abstract

A cancelable biometric scheme called correlation-invariant random filtering (CIRF) is known as a promising template protection scheme. This scheme transforms a biometric feature represented as an image via the 2D number theoretic transform (NTT) and random filtering. CIRF has perfect secrecy in that the transformed feature leaks no information about the original feature. However, CIRF cannot be applied to large-scale biometric identification, since the 2D inverse NTT in the matching phase requires high computational time. Furthermore, existing biometric indexing schemes cannot be used in conjunction with template protection schemes to speed up biometric identification, since a biometric index leaks some information about the original feature. In this paper, we propose a novel indexing scheme called "cancelable indexing" to speed up CIRF without losing its security properties. The proposed scheme is based on fast computation of CIRF via low-rank approximation of biometric images and via a minimum spanning tree representation of low-rank matrices in the Fourier domain. We prove that the transformed index leaks no information about the original index and the original biometric feature (i.e., perfect secrecy), and thoroughly discuss the security of the proposed scheme. Abstract

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging hemorrhagic fever caused by a tick-borne banyangvirus and is associated with high fatality. Despite increasing incidence of SFTS and serious public health concerns in East Asia, the pathogenesis of lethal SFTS virus (SFTSV) infection in humans is not fully understood. Numbers of postmortem examinations to determine target cells of the viral infection have so far been limited. Here we showed that B cells differentiating into plasmablasts and macrophages in secondary lymphoid organs were targets for SFTSV at the end stage of lethal infection, and the majority of SFTSV-infected cells were B cell-lineage lymphocytes. In affected individuals, B cell-lineage lymphocytes with SFTSV infection were widely distributed in both lymphoid and nonlymphoid organs, and infiltration of these cells into the capillaries of the organs could be observed occasionally. Moreover, a human plasmablastic lymphoma cell line, PBL-1, was susceptible to SFTSV propagation and had a similar immunophenotype to that of target cells of SFTSV in fatal SFTS. PBL-1 can therefore provide a potential in vitro model for human SFTSV infection. Abstract

Simple Summary: Phospholipase A2 Group IIA (PLA2G2A), discovered by single-cell gene expression analysis, is useful for the diagnosis of hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) with conventional HCA-specific markers. Improved diagnostic criteria will avoid unnecessary surgery and lead to options such as drug therapy. Although benign hepatocellular adenomas (HCA) are very rare, recent observations have shown their occurrence in patients with diabetes mellitus. Consequently, most of these cases are treated by resection due to concerns regarding their potential progression to hepatocarcinoma (HCC). This decision is largely driven by the limited number of studies on HCC subtyping and the lack of molecular and biological insights into the carcinogenic potential of benign tumors. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the subtype classification of HCA and to compare and analyze gene expression profiling between HCA and HCC tissues. One fresh inflammatory HCA (I-HCA), three non-B non-C HCCs, two hepatitis B virus-HCCs, and one normal liver tissue sample were subjected to single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). Comparative analysis of scRNA-seq among different tissues showed that phospholipase A2 group IIA (PLA2G2A) mRNA was specifically expressed in I-HCA, following RNA-seq analysis in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from other HCAs. Immunohistochemistry using the PLA2G2A antibody in these tissues indicated that the positive reaction was mainly observed in hepatocytes of I-HCAs and stromal cells surrounding the tumor tissue in HCC were also stained. According to a clinical database, PLA2G2A expression in HCC does not correlate with poor prognosis. This finding may potentially help develop a new definition for I-HCA, resulting in a significant clinical contribution, but it requires validation with other fresh HCA samples. Abstract

Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory disorder that can involve multiple organs. It is often challenging to distinguish IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) from cholangiocarcinoma because of overlap in their clinical findings. A 75-year-old man presented to a hospital for a detailed examination of the elevation of some biliary enzymes. Radiographic examination revealed segmental bile duct with wall thickening of the common hepatic bile duct, and dilation of the peripheral branches. Transampullary biopsy showed a non-specific inflammatory reaction with several IgG4-positive cell infiltrations. There were no signs of malignancy. The liver biopsy showed bile duct injury accompanied by IgG4-positive cell infiltration. We then performed bile duct biopsy and finally diagnosed the patient with cholangiocarcinoma. We should remember that the IgG4 reaction is neither completely sensitive nor specific for IgG4-RD and avoid resting solely on the IgG4 reaction to precisely distinguish IgG4-SC from cholangiocarcinoma.

49. Bilobectomy for synchronous multiple lung cancer after COVID-19 pneumonia: a case report

Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel emerging disease and a major risk factor for postoperative complications, especially in thoracic surgery. However, it is unclear how previous COVID-19 infection may affect perioperative management of lung resection patients. A 70-year-old woman visited her primary doctor complaining of chest pain. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed three abnormal nodules in the right upper and middle lung lobes and synchronous triple primary cancer was suspected. Before we could assess the patient for surgery, she developed a persistent fever. A second chest CT scan revealed newly emerged subpleural ground-glass opacities (GGO) in the right lung. The patient was diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia and hospitalized. She was treated for COVID-19 (Clinical Trial: jRCTs031200196) and discharged in a satisfactory condition 10 days later. A right upper and middle bilobectomy was performed 60 days after the patient’s initial COVID-19 diagnosis without any complications. Histopathological examination of the nodules identified synchronous triple primary lung cancer. The subpleural right upper and middle lung lobe tissue showed peribronchial lymphocyte infiltration and interstitial thickening. However, immunohistochemical staining for the SARS-CoV-2 antigen and PCR testing for SARS-CoV-2 were both negative. In this case, bilobectomy for triple primary lung cancer was performed safely after COVID-19 pneumonia. Further studies are needed to establish a safe and appropriate perioperative management system for thoracic surgery in patients recovering from COVID-19 pneumonia.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Because development of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) worsens the prognosis of patients with coronary artery disease, preventing recurrent ACS is crucial. However, the degree to which secondary prevention treatment goals are achieved in patients with recurrent ACS is unknown. METHODS 214 consecutive ACS patients were classified as having First ACS (n=182) or Recurrent ACS (n=32), and the clinical characteristics of these groups were compared. Fifteen patients died or developed cardiovascular (CV) events during hospitalization, and the remaining 199 patients were followed from the date of hospital discharge to evaluate subsequent CV events. RESULTS Patients in the Recurrent ACS group were older than those in the First ACS group (76.8±10.8 years vs 68.8±13.4 years, p=0.002) and had a higher rate of diabetes mellitus (DM) (65.6% vs 36.8%, p=0.003).
