Trans-1,4-dialdehyde 4a was obtained as the major product from the stereoselective low-temperature diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBALH) reduction of the title tetraester 3 and novel 1,1,4,4-tetrasubstituted cyclohexanes consisting of trans-1,4-difluoromethyl and fluoromethyl groups from the fluorination of 4a, b and subsequent additional elaboration. Reduction of merely a single ester group ensues from the treatment of dimethyl 1,1-cycloalkyl diesters with excess DIBALH.

A single electron transfer (SET) mechanism, that involved the reaction between arenethiolate nucleophiles and perfluorodecalin was proposed for the defluorination reaction. Substrates having a tertiary or quarternary carbon or element of unsaturation exhibited a greater proclivity toward defluorination through the SET mechanism.

The gallium-oxo-hydroxide dication is located on an inversion center and adopts a cage structure composed of 12 fused Ga3O3 rings and is associated with the hydrate mol­ecules and the [B(C6F5)4]− anions through hydrogen bonds and one O-H⃛π-ring interaction. The title triene, C18H10F6, was prepared via the Pd0 coupling reaction of ( E)-(1,2-di­fluoro-1,2-ethenediyl)­bis­(tri­butyl­stan­nane) with ( Z)-β-iodo-α,β-di­fluoro­styrene in N, N′-dimethylformamide/tetrahydrofuran. The crystal structure shows the product to be the 1 E,3 E,5 E isomer. Due to steric interactions between F atoms, the double bonds are not coplanar. ()-Tartaric acid, C4H6O6, crystallized from ethanol in space group P. The structure is characterized by five hydrogen bonds, including the formation of a centrosymmetric carbox­ylic acid dimer which forms infinite chains along the body diagonal. These chains form sheets via hydrogen bonding between α-hydroxyl groups. The sheets are connected through a bifurcated hydrogen bond. The title compound, [Hf(C7H7)3(C10H15)], adopts a monomeric three-legged piano-stool structure. One benzyl ligand is disordered between two sites (44:56%) related by a ∼30° rotation about an axis defined by the Hf atom and the ipso-C atom of the benzyl ligand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the title compound, [Ru(C(28)H(22)N(2)P)Cl(CO)(2)]·CH(2)Cl(2), the Ru(II) atom exhibits a distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry. The N-phenyl group of the ligand has undergone orthometalation; as a result, the tridentate phosphane-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligand is coordinating in a meridional fashion. This complex is of inter-est with respect to transfer hydrogenation catalysis and also provides an example of C-H activation behavior in late transition metal complexes. The dichloro-methane solvent mol-ecule is disordered over two sets of sites with an occupancy ratio of 0.873 (14):0.127 (14).

The Ru(II) atom in the title compound, [RuCl(2)(C(31)H(29)N(2)P)(CO)(2)]·CH(2)Cl(2), exhibits a distorted octahedral coordination environment. The bond angles of the cis substituents at the Ru(II) atom range from 82.72 (9) to 97.20 (3)°. This mol-ecule is of inter-est in the field of catalytic transfer hydrogenation.
