Abstract: Titanium dioxide mixed phases containing TiO2(b) and anatase phase in different ratios were prepared via a facile, template free, low temperature hydrothermal synthesis. Morphology and phase composition were tuned by adequately adjusting the main synthesis parameters, i.e., temperature, powder/liquid ratio and basicity of the mother solution. The effect of different phase compositions on the lithium insertion and de-insertion properties was tested by electrochemical cycling at increasing cycling rates. Results indicate a superiority of monoclinic TiO2(b) phase over the tetragonal anatase phase especially at elevated cycling rates. Further analysis shows that internal resistance is one of the major limitations for electrochemical cycling of anatase. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Commercial C-LiFe0.33Mn0.67PO4 positive electrode material has been investigated by 57Fe Mössbauer Spectroscopy (MS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). The combined use of these experimental techniques provides a better understanding of the electrochemical reaction involved during cycling. 57Fe MS is very efficient to directly follow oxidation state of Fe in the electrode, and gives surprisingly indirect information on the oxidation state of Mn as observed by XAS and XPS. The electrochemical mechanism is proposed based from in situ and operando investigations using both MS and XAS, and is consistent with XPS surface studies. XPS analysis of the electrodes at the end of charge (4.4V) reveals enhanced electrode/electrolyte interface reactivity at this high potential. Aging of C-LiFe0.33Mn0.67PO4/Li cells after 50cycles at 60°C indicates a rather good electrochemical behavior (low capacity fading) of the electrode material. Both 57Fe MS and XPS (Mn 2p and Fe 2p) clearly show no modification on Fe and Mn oxidation state compared to fresh electrode confirming the good electrochemical performances. The transformation of olivine during the conversion of CO 2 to light hydrocarbons activated by mechanochemical treatments at different impact frequencies was studied by a combination of several complementary characterization methods including X-ray diffraction, Raman and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Several olivine samples were studied as a function of the milling time, indicating the gradual transformation of Fe II -containing olivine into new Fe III -containing weathering products including iron oxides, magnesium iron carbonates and silicates. The results presented here complement those of a previous study on the weathering process of olivine promoted by mechanochemical activation, by demonstrating the role of the redox activity of the iron species during the activation process. Iron particles of sizes between 6 and 20 nm forming aggregates of 57 ± 17 nm were synthesized by chemical reduction of iron precursors on the surface of montmorillonite (MMT). This active MMT-Fe powder was then uniformly distributed in a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) matrix by extrusion at atmospheric conditions, as confirmed by wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), which also detected a partial exfoliation of the nanoclays. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) did not detect any significant modification of the degradation temperature between nanocomposites and active nanocomposites. 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy evidenced the formation of a majority of iron boride in MMT-Fe as well as in the active film containing it. The LLDPE.Fu15.MMT-Fe3.75 and LLDPE.Fu15.MMT-Fe6.25 films had oxygen-scavenging capacities of 0.031 ± 0.002 and 0.055 ± 0.009 g(O 2 )/g(Fe), respectively, while the neat powder had an adsorption capacity of 0.122 g(O 2 )/g(Fe). This result confirms that the fresh film samples were partially oxidized shortly after thermomechanical processing (60% of oxidized species according to Mössbauer spectroscopy). No significant difference in oxygen permeability was observed when MMT-Fe was added. This was related to the relatively small film surface used for measuring the permeability. The reaction-diffusion model proposed here was able to reproduce the observed data of O 2 adsorption in an active nanocomposite, which validated the O 2 adsorption model previously developed for dried MMT-Fe powder.

The electrochemical alloying of lead-based electrodes with potassium was investigated by galvanostatic measurements as well as by ex situ and operando X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical reduction must be activated by an initial high current pulse which prevents the passivation of the lead electrode. The alloying process leads to the formation of crystalline KPb. During the discharge, two intermediate phases are observed, K 10 Pb 48 and K 4 Pb 9 , whereas only K 4 Pb 9 seems to form during the charge. We report here a simple process for the synthesis of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO)/carbon nanocomposites by a one-pot method using an alginic acid aquagel as a template and carbon source, and lithium acetate and TiO 2 nanoparticles as precursors to the LTO phase. The carbon content can be tuned by adjusting the relative amount of alginic acid. The obtained materials consist of nanosized primary particles of LTO (30 nm) forming micron-sized aggregates covered by well-dispersed carbon (from 3 to 19 wt%). The homogeneous dispersion of carbon over the particles improves the electrochemical performance of LTO electrodes such as rate capability (>95 mA h g -1 at 40C) and cycling performance (>98% of retention after 500 cycles at 5C), even with only 3% of carbon black additive in the electrode formulation. With a simple and easily up-scalable synthesis, the LTO/carbon nanocomposites of this study are promising candidates as anode materials for practical application in lithium-ion batteries., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Magnetic Fe₃O₄, Fe and Fe/Pd nanoparticles embedded within the pores of activated carbon fabrics (ACF) were prepared by impregnation of the ACF in iron acetylacetanoate (Fe(acac)₃) ethanol solution, followed by thermal decomposition of the embedded iron precursor at 200, 400 and 600 °C in an inert atmosphere. The effect of the annealing temperature on the chemical composition, shape, crystallinity, surface area, pore volume, and magnetic properties of the various functionalized ACF was elucidated. The Fe nanoparticles within the ACF were also doped with tinier Pd nanoparticles, by impregnation of the Fe/ACF in palladium acetate ethanol solution. The potential use of the functionalized ACF for removal of a model azo-dye, orange II, was demonstrated. This study illustrated the enhanced removal of the dye from an aqueous solution according to the following order: Fe/Pd/ACF > Fe/ACF > ACF. In addition, the enhanced activity of Fe₃O₄/ACF in the presence of increasing concentrations of H₂O₂ (Fenton catalysts) was also illustrated.

Chemical reactivity of asbestos tremolite from Italy and USA localities and Union Internationale Contre le Cancer (UICC) crocidolite was studied in relation to Fe content, oxidation state, and structural coordination. Direct correlation between amount of Fe(2+) at the exposed M(1) and M(2) sites of the amphibole structure and fiber chemical reactivity was established. The in vitro toxicity of the same samples was investigated on human alveolar A549 cell line. Relationship between crystal-chemical features and cell toxicity is not straightforward. UICC crocidolite has Fe content and chemical reactivity largely higher than that of tremolite samples, but all show comparable in vitro toxic potential. Results obtained evidenced that Fe topochemistry is not a primary factor for induced cell toxicity, though it accounts for asbestos chemical reactivity (and possibly genotoxicity).

Aim: Gemcitabine (GEM) enters normal and tumour cells via concentrative (CNT) and equilibrative nucleoside transporters (ENT) and is subsequently deaminated to the inactive difluorodeoxyurine (dFdU) by cytidine deaminase (CDA). The aim of our study was to ascertain whether the nucleoside transporter genotype and the CDA activity phenotype can predict total GEM plasma clearance., Methods: Forty-seven patients received GEM 1000-1250mgm(-2) i.v. over 30min. Plasma concentrations of GEM and dFdU were measured and individual pharmacokinetic profiles were determined. CDA activity was measured ex vivo in plasma samples. The two most common hENT1 and hCNT1 polymorphisms were determined from genomic DNA., Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that GEM plasma clearance (CL) was positively correlated with the end of infusion dFdU : GEM ratio (P < 0.0001), which is a marker of in vivo CDA activity. The ENT1 genotype characterized by high transport capacity (G/G) and age were inversely correlated with CL (P= 0.027 and 0.048, respectively). A strong correlation was found between end of infusion GEM concentration and area under the concentration-time curve from time 0 to infinity (AUC(0,∞)) (r(2) = 0.77)., Conclusions: Our results confirm the role of CDA and age on the interindividual variability of GEM CL and show the contribution of the hENT1 genotype for the first time., (© 2011 The Authors. The sorption of Cu on five vineyard soils was examined via macroscopic and spectroscopic investigations. The composition of the soils was previously determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was employed to determine the metal environment with regard to the identity and interaction of the nearest atomic neighbors, the bond distances, and the coordination numbers. The five soils present similar sorption properties and there is no XAS evidence that the nature of the soil samples affects the local chemical environment of Cu(II). The kinetics of the Cu sorption reactions is rapid, with the equilibrium loading of Cu on the surface achieving approximately 200 mumol g(-1), i.e., 12.7 mg g(-1). The XAS data indicate that Cu is adsorbed in the form of inner-sphere complexes with first shell CuO parameters of four equatorial CuO bonds equal to 1.93 A and two axial CuO bonds at 2.43 A. This is in accordance with a Jahn-Teller distorted octahedron environment around copper. Our results provide evidence of the complexation of Cu(II) onto soil organic matter coated with an inorganic surface (quartz, clay, and goethite).

Tumor growth is currently viewed as a phenomenon associated with neovascularization and sustained production of angiogenic factors, but whether a transient angiogenic switch may trigger tumor growth remains unclear. Here, we report that leukemia cells (MOLT-3) were poorly angiogenic and remained dormant when injected s.c. into immunodeficient mice. However, progressive growth of lymphoid tumors was invariably recorded when irradiated angiogenic cells from Kaposi's sarcoma (KS-IMM) were locally coinjected with MOLT-3 cells or administered later. The persistence of KS-IMM cells in vivo was tracked by flow cytometry and real-time PCR analysis, and it was limited to a few days, during which angiogenesis was induced and preceded tumor growth. The engraftment of other types of poorly tumorigenic cancer cells was also greatly improved by irradiated KS-IMM cells. Moreover, short-term treatment with angiogenic factors, including basic FGF or VEGF, either given as recombinant factors or delivered by retroviral vectors, also accelerated tumor growth. These findings may emphasize that tumor angiogenesis is a process requiring a higher amount of angiogenic factors for its induction than maintenance.

Ovarian cancer represents a suitable disease for gene therapy because of the containment of neoplastic cells in the peritoneal cavity even at advanced tumor stages. The aim of this study was to investigate whether intraperitoneal administration of a lentiviral vector encoding murine interferon-alpha (LV-IFN) could have therapeutic activity in a transplantable ovarian cancer model. Multiple injections of low amounts of LV-IFN into severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice bearing IGROV-1 or OC316 ovarian cancer cells elicited remarkable antitumor activity, leading to prolongation of survival in the majority of animals. A definitive cure was obtained in animals bearing PD-OVA#1 tumors, generated by injecting tumor cells isolated from the ascitic fluid of a patient into SCID mice. Interferon-alpha levels were detected in the peritoneal fluids but not in the serum of treated mice, indicating that production of the cytokine is mainly local, by both tumor and normal cells of the host. Antitumor effects were associated with a remarkable decrease in the formation of hemorrhagic ascites, an increase in ischemic tumor necrosis, and a reduction in microvessel density. In conclusion, our findings show that intracavitary IFN-alpha gene therapy, using a lentiviral vector, provides strong antitumor effects in murine models of ovarian cancer and reinforces the evidence that angiogenesis inhibition is a promising strategy for the treatment of localized tumors.
