This contribution studies correlations between the degree of literalness and the syntax and semantics of French and German verbs. Annotation tests for sentences with German verbs with and without particles and their French equivalents provide evidence for a correlation between particle verbs and non-literal senses, and, for French verbs more than for German verbs, between a shift from literal to non-literal use and a shift in lexical aspect. The last section proposes a preliminary theoretical account for the empirical findings based on specific components and properties of events.

Die Arbeit verbindet die beiden Forschungsgebiete Fachsprachenforschung und kontrastive Linguistik. Im Korpus werden deutsche und französische Nominalsyntagmen, insbesondere nominale Komposita und prädikative Nominalisierungen untersucht. Den größeren Zusammenhang zwischen den einzelnen Kapiteln stellen die beiden Begriffe "Prädikativität" und "Kondensation" her. Prädikative Strukturen haben die Funktion der Prädikation und sind Voraussetzung für den Ausdruck von Aussagen. In Kapitel 3 werden insbesondere die Komposita mit prädikativem Element berücksichtigt, im Kapitel 4 geht es um nominale Prädikation und in Kapital 5 um das Verhältnis von nominaler und verbaler Prädikation im Text. Kondensation ist die syntaktische Verdichtung von Aussagen. Sowohl Nominalkomposita als auch prädikative Nominalisierungen sind Beispiele für Kondensation.

Deverbal nominalisations have been analysed from various viewpoints during the last 20 years. One reason for this is their status as „cross-categorical“ elements (Alexiadou 2001); the other reason for their popularity could be that they often serve to illustrate the interaction of different linguistic modules. Among the theories discussed in this work, those which try to unite syntax, morphology and semantics (in different ways and to a different degree) are in the majority (Grimshaw 1990, Borer 1994, 2001, 2005, Ehrich/Rapp 2000, Alexiadou 2001, Lieber 2004, Meinschaefer 2004, Grimshaw/Alexiadou 2008, Alexiadou et al. 2009 ). Up to now, those approaches were however not able to provide an analysis for the complex French suffix landscape, where numerous ambiguous deverbal nominalisation processes co-exist and produce a large number of doublets (Lüdtke 1978). In my opinion, one reason for the problems with the French system is that these approaches do not consider all three areas which are of importance for the understanding of event nominalisations (syntax, semantics, morphology) to the same extent. In this dissertation I introduce an approach by means of which all three areas and their representatives (verbal argument, base verb, suffix) can be brought together on an equal level. Moreover I show how nominalisations behave in different contexts and which event types they are able to develop. In order to cope with the mentioned problems, I apply the framework of aspectual composition in the sense of Verkuyl 1972: by help of the plus principle, so-called „internal“ aspect can be derived from concrete lexical, morphological and syntactic elements in the VP (Verkuyl 1972) as well as in the NP. In my thesis I have extended the approach by Verkuyl to nominal event types by adding an additional level of calculation (represented by the derivational suffix) to the compositional principle. This analysis is supported by English and German data. Moreover the introduced system is adapted to the semantically overlapping French nominalisation suffixes -age, -ment and -(t)ion, by weakening the originally strictly temporal feature [+/-ADD TO] (Verkuyl 1972) for other than eventive contexts (results, objects, instruments, etc.). Thus doublets like miaulement/miaulage, dénazification/dénazifiage, etc. (Martin 2008) can be differentiated in their interpretations, on the one hand according to aspect, on the other hand according to their surrounding context. In order to find evidence for this thesis I have extracted neologisms from French text corpora. According to Aronoff 1976, new words represent the original, not lexicalised interpretations of lexical items. After this analysis the following properties of the French event nominalisation system emerged: the French derverbal nominalisation suffixes -age, -ment and -(t)ion differ not only according to their productivity, but also according to their aspectual interpretation. For the recursively productive -ment and the productive, but morphologically restricted -(t)ion (Lüdtke 1978), the default interpretation is a terminative event. This semantic properties however interact with the meaning of the verbal base (terminative or durative Aktionsart) and the quantification of the internal verbal argument (for other viewpoints, cf. Martin 2008, Huyghe/Marín 2007, Ferret et al. 2010). This means that in my opinion the kind of aspect that we observe in nominalisations is of lexical, compositional nature and can therefore be described with what Verkuyl 1972 calls "inner" aspect. The default interpretation of the very productive -age-process in French is the one of a weakly-durative event. In contrast to other durative processes, such as English -ing and the German nominalised infinitives, other non-eventive readings can be more easily derived for -age. Moreover the interpretation of an -age-derivative as durative depends also to a certain extent on the existence of doublets from rival processes (cf. also Ferret at al. 2010 on -ée or Martin 2008 on -(t)ion). The aspectual distinction in the French derivation system seems to be enforced by the oppositions and overlaps of the great variety of deverbal processes. Another interesting issue for French is the analysis of natural contexts, in which the derivatives come up. My extracted data shows that here (even more than in the other two languages that were examined) it is not only the suffix, but also the other elements in the event NP that influence the aspectual interpretation of the entire expression: because of its own aspectual weakness, -age prefers contexts which are also durative (such as unspecified quantified internal arguments), in order to create aspectual unambiguity for the event that it expresses., Deverbale Nominalisierungen sind in den letzten 20 Jahren unter diversen Blickpunkten betrachtet worden. Dies liegt zum einen an ihrem Status als „kategorieübergreifend“ (Alexiadou 2001), zum anderen daran, dass an ihnen die Interaktion verschiedener linguistischer Teilmodule illustriert werden kann. Unter den in dieser Arbeit besprochenen Theorien sind die am dominantesten, die versuchen Syntax, Morphologie und Semantik (auf verschiedene Arten und in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß) zusammenzubringen (Grimshaw 1990, Borer 1994, 2001, 2005, Ehrich/Rapp 2000, Alexiadou 2001, Lieber 2004, Meinschaefer 2004, Grimshaw/Alexiadou 2008, Alexiadou et al. 2009). Diesen Ansätzen ist es jedoch bisher nicht gelungen, eindeutige Analysen für die komplexe Suffixlandschaft des Französischen zu erstellen. Dort gibt es zahlreiche ambige deverbale Nominalisierungsprozesse, die eine hohe Anzahl von Dubletten produzieren (Lüdtke 1978). Ein Grund dafür ist meines Erachtens, dass nicht allen drei Teilgebieten (Syntax, Semantik, Morphologie), die bei der Analyse von Ereignisnominalisierungen eine Rolle spielen, gleich viel Wert zugesprochen wird. Ich stelle in meiner Dissertation einen Ansatz vor, der versucht, die drei Teilgebiete und ihre Repräsentanten - Basisverb, Suffix und Verbargumente – zusammenzubringen. Außerdem wird gezeigt, wie sich Nominalsierungen in verschiedenen Kontexten verhalten und welche Ereignistypen sie entwickeln. Hierbei spielt die aspektuellen Komposition im Sinne Verkuyls 1972 eine entscheidende Rolle: mit Hilfe des von ihm ausgearbeiteten Plus Prinzips kann der sogenannte "interne" Aspekt an konkreten syntaktischen, morphologischen und lexikalischen Einheiten festgemacht und seine Erstellung in der VP (Verkuyl 1972, 1993), ebenso wie in der NP nachvollzogen werden. Meine Arbeit liefert eine Erweiterung des Verkuyl'schen Ansatzes für die Erfassung von nominalen Ereignistypen, indem ein weiterer Kalkulationsschritt – repräsentiert durch die Derivationssuffixe - im Plus Prinzip hinzugefügt wird. Anhand Englischer und Deutscher Daten wird diese Analyse etabliert. Desweiteren wird das System auf die semantisch stark überlappenden Nominalisierungssuffixe des Französischen -age, -ment und -(t)ion zugeschnitten, indem das ursprüngliche strikt temporale Feature [+/- ADD TO] (Verkuyl 1972) anderen Kontexten, die sich nicht im Ereignisbereich bewegen (Resultat, Objekt, Instrument, etc.) angepasst wird. So können Dubletten wie miaulement/miaulage, dénazification/dénazifiage, etc. (Martin 2008) zum einen nach Aspekt, zum anderen nach den sie umgebenden Kontexten und den daraus resultierenden Lesarten unterschieden werden. Hierfür wurden Neologismen aus französischen Textkorpora extrahiert, die nach Aronoff 1976 die ursprünglichen, nicht lexikalisierten Lesarten von lexikalischen Einheiten repräsentieren. Nach dieser Analyse zeigt sich folgendes Bild: die untersuchten französischen deverbalen Nominalisierungssuffixe -age, -ment und -(t)ion unterscheiden sich nicht nur in ihrer Produktivität, sondern auch in ihrer aspektuellen Interpretation. Als Default-Lesart kann für das rückläufig produktive -ment und das produktive, aber morphologisch eingeschränkte -(t)ion (Lüdtke 1978) eine terminative Semantik festgestellt werden. Diese interagiert jedoch mit der Bedeutung der Verbbasis (durative oder terminative Aktionsart) und der Quantifikation des internen Verbarguments (für andere Blickwinkel, siehe z.B. Martin 2008, Huyghe/Marín 2007, Ferret et al. 2010). Das bedeutet, dass meiner Ansicht nach der von Nominaliserungen erschaffene Aspekt lexikalischer, kompositioneller Natur ist und somit Verkuyl's "innerem Aspekt" zugeordnet wird. Die Defaultlesart des sehr produktiven -age-Prozesses im Französischen ist eine schwach-durative. Im Gegensatz zu anderen durativen Derivationsprozessen, wie dem Englischen -ing und den deutschen nominalisierten Infinitiven, können für das Französische einfacher andere, nicht-eventive Lesarten hergestellt werden. Außerdem kann die Interpretation eines -age-Derivats als durativ auch von der Konkurrenzsituation zu den beiden anderen genannten Prozessen abhängen. Die aspektuelle Distinktion im französischen Derivationssystem lebt von der Opposition und der semantischen Überlappung der vielen vorhandenen Prozesse (siehe auch Ferret et al. 2010 zu -ée oder Martin 2008 zu -(t)ion). Interessant ist für das Französische auch die Analyse natürlicher Kontexte, in denen Derivate vorkommen. Hier zeigt sich noch mehr als in den anderen beiden untersuchten Sprachen, dass nicht das Suffix alleine, sondern auch die anderen Elemente in der Ereignis-NP aspektuellen Einfluss auf die Gesamtlesart haben. -Age präferiert (vermutlich aufgrund seiner eigenen aspektuellen Schwäche) Kontexte, die ebenfalls durativ sind und somit aspektuelle Eindeutigkeit herstellen (z.B. Verbargumente, die nicht spezifiziert quantifiziert sind).

Das Ziel der Arbeit ist eine diachrone korpusbasierte Analyse französischer Gefühls-Kollokationen. Auf der Grundlage von Korpora verschiedener Epochen wird untersucht, ob Kollokationen ein stabiles oder eher variables Phänomen darstellen und welche Veränderungen im kollokationellen Bereich stattfinden. Dazu wird einerseits die syntaktische und semantische Entwicklung der Kollokationen als komplette Einheiten verfolgt, andererseits steht die diachrone Analyse der Kollokationskonstituenten, besonders der Kollokatoren, im Mittelpunkt. Kollokatoren erhalten ihre vollständige Bedeutung erst durch die Basis der Kollokation, zeichnen sich synchron also durch ihre Abhängigkeit von der Basis ab, welche ihre volle Bedeutung beibehält und semantisch autonom ist. Daraus ergibt sich die Frage, ob Kollokatoren, um Kollokationskonstituenten zu werden, einen Bedeutungswandel in Abhängigkeit von der Basis erleben oder eher unabhängig davon, um erst später eine Kollokation mit Letzterer einzugehen. Anhand detaillierter Analysen wird überprüft, ob der Bedeutungswandel der Kollokatoren in direktem Zusammenhang mit der Kollokationsbildung steht oder nicht damit verknüpft ist. Um obige Fragestellungen zu beantworten, wird die Untersuchung einerseits auf der Basis der von I. A. Mel'cuk eingeführten Methode der lexikalischen Funktionen, durchgeführt. Da der Akzent auf der Analyse der Entwicklung der Semantik der Kollokatoren liegt, finden andererseits die Prinzipien des Bedeutungswandels von A. Blank Anwendung. Die Ergebnisse unterstreichen, dass die Bedeutungen der Kollokatoren vorwiegend auf Metaphern basieren, so dass es sich anbietet, in einem abschließenden Kapitel die Metaphorik in den Kollokationen auf der Grundlage der Prinzipien der kognitiven Linguistik zu analysieren. Die Dissertation ist in drei Teile gegliedert. Teil I bildet den theoretischen Rahmen für die angesetzte Analyse. Darin wird ein Überblick über die Forschungslage im Bereich der Kollokationen gegeben und die Rolle der Kollokationen in der Diachronie dargestellt. In Teil II werden die Methodik und das Vorgehen in der Untersuchung vorgestellt, was eine Voraussetzung für den dritten Teil der Dissertation, die Analyse der Kollokationen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven, ist., The aim of this thesis is to provide a diachronic corpus-based analysis of French emotion collocations. On the basis of corpora from various periods I investigate whether collocations represent a stable or a rather variable phenomenon and I identify the types of changes taking place in the collocational domain. Firstly, the syntactic and semantic development of collocations as complete entities is illustrated. Secondly, the diachronic analysis of the collocational constituents, first of all collocates, is focused. Collocates get their full meaning only in dependence of the collocation base, which maintains its complete meaning and is semantically autonomous. This fact leads to the question of whether collocates undergo a meaning change in dependence of the base or not in order to become collocation constituents. In the latter case they can later form a collocation with this base. On the basis of various detailed analyses I investigate whether there is a direct relation between the meaning change of collocates and the formation of collocations. In order to answer the questions above, the analysis is led on the basis of I. A. Mel'cuk's method of lexical functions. Furthermore, since I focus on the study of the semantic evolution of the collocates, I apply A. Blank's principles of meaning change. The results emphasize that the meanings of collocates are principally based on metaphors. The metaphors in collocations are analysed on the basis of the principles of cognitive linguistics in the last chapter. This thesis consists of three parts. The first part provides the theoretical frame for the analysis. It gives a general view over the current research in the domain of collocations and presents the treatment of collocations in diachrony. The second part introduces the method and the approach taken in the analysis. It constitutes a prerequisite for the third part of the thesis, namely the analysis of collocations from different linguistic perspectives.
