This study investigates the efficacy of newly synthesized inhibitor with a dual function of corrosion inhibition and biocide for control of microbial influenced corrosion (MIC) in carbon steel API 5LX in the cooling tower water (CTW) environment. Four types of N-substituted tetrabromophthalic inhibitor (N-TBI) were synthesized, and the structural characterization was performed via proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry. These studies revealed the distinctive optical, thermal, and dielectric properties of the synthesized inhibitors. The corrosion inhibition efficiency has been evaluated by the weight loss (WL) analysis and electrochemical measurements (ECM) and biofilm assay. Biofilm assays and WL showed that inhibitor II exhibited the highest inhibition efficiency 74% and 79% respectively than others. Further ECM showed that the higher charge transfer resistance and the lower corrosion current, suggesting a protective film formed on the metal surface which was due to the adsorption of the N-TBI. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the adsorption of the N-TBI as C-O stretching and C-H bending with the Fe complex. X-ray diffractometer revealed that the presence of inhibitors in the corrosion product (Fe 3 O 4 , Fe 2 O 3 , FeH 2 O 2 , FeS) were highly reduced than the control system. A sustainable alternative to conventional concrete involves using recycled aggregates (RA) instead of natural aggregates (NA) and incorporating wheat straw ash (WSA) as a partial replacement for Portland cement. The demand for high-performance concrete (HPC) is rising due to the need for architecturally complex structures and long-span bridges, but HPC's low ductility necessitates reinforcement. Waste tire steel fibers (WTSFs) are gaining popularity for their tensile strength. However, WSA-RA concrete's low early strength is a challenge. Chemical activators like sodium sulfate can enhance early-age strength. This study evaluated the durability and strength of fiber-reinforced concrete with both inactivated and activated WSA. Tests included compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, modulus of rupture (MOR), acid attack resistance, chloride penetration, sorptivity, and water absorption. Activated WSA-RA concrete showed significantly improved early strength. The mixture with 30% RA, 40% WSA, WTSFs, and activator exhibited the highest strength at 90 days. At 60% RA content, activated concrete with 40% WSA and 2.5% WTSFs outperformed the control. Durability was enhanced with a 14-17% reduction in water absorption and sorptivity and a 25.2% decrease in chloride penetration. Acid resistance improved by 26%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed these findings with elevated hydration product peaks. The interaction of microalgae on the reinforced concrete with corrosion inhibitor is not well understood. Moreover, the inhibition role of microalgae on corrosion has been reported in recent years. In this study, the corrosion inhibition behavior of Q235 carbon steel (CS) due to the presence of Chlorella sp. and benzotriazole (BTA) in alkaline artificial seawater was investigated by means of weight loss, electrochemical measurements including open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization curves, and surface analysis including scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion spectrometer, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results of reduced corrosion rates in the algae-BTA system demonstrated that Chlorella sp. could facilitate the corrosion inhibition efficiency of BTA on the CS specimens. Moreover, polarization measurement showed the algae-BTA system had a mixed-type corrosion inhibition effect. The mechanisms of inhibition were proposed to be the precipitation of iron complexes such as Fe-BTA-EPS and Fe-BTA and iron compounds on the steel surface in the presence of the microalgae and BTA - . The deterioration of fibre-reinforced sprayed concrete was studied in the Oslofjord subsea tunnel (Norway). At sites with intrusion of saline groundwater resulting in biofilm growth, the concrete exhibited significant concrete deterioration and steel fibre corrosion. Using amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics, the microbial taxa and surveyed potential microbial mechanisms of concrete degradation at two sites over five years were identified. The concrete beneath the biofilm was investigated with polarised light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The oxic environment in the tunnel favoured aerobic oxidation processes in nitrogen, sulfur and metal biogeochemical cycling as evidenced by large abundances of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) with potential for oxidation of nitrogen, sulfur, manganese and iron, observed mild acidification of the concrete, and the presence of manganese- and iron oxides. These results suggest that autotrophic microbial populations involved in the cycling of several elements contributed to the corrosion of steel fibres and acidification causing concrete deterioration., (© 2024. In the present study the authors' main goal is to avoid the corrosive attack of the chloride ions of 3.5% NaCl solution in saline medium on the mild steel (MS), by addition of small amount of a new derivative of the hydrazide called ligand (HL), as a corrosion inhibitor. This study had been achieved by employing different electrochemical measurements such as, open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentio-dynamic polarization (PDP) methods. The results of the electrochemical test (OCP), showed that, the open circuit potential of the mild steel in saline solution, was guided to more positive direction in presence of the ligand (HL), at its ideal concentration (1 × 10 -3  M), compared to the (OCP), of the mild steel in absence of (HL). The results of the electrochemical methods, EIS and PDP presented that, the ligand (HL), was acted as a good corrosion inhibitor for hindering the corrosion process of the mild steel in 3.5% sodium chloride, as it was recorded a good percentage of the inhibition efficiency (77.45%, 53.41%, by EIS and PDP techniques respectively), at its optimum concentration (1 × 10 -3  M). Also, the corrosion rate of the mild steel in the saline medium without (HL), was listed about (0.0017 mm/year), while in existence of (HL), was decreased to a value about (0.00061 mm/year). As well, some of electrical properties of (HL), and its derivative [Pd(II), Cr(III), and Ru(III)], complexes were investigated such as; the activation energy (E a(ac) ), which recorded values in the range of 0.02-0.44 (eV) range and electrical conductivity which listed values at room temperature in the range of 10 -5 -10 -8  S.cm -1 . The results of the AC and DC electrical conductivity measurements for (HL), and its derivative [Pd(II), Cr(III) and Ru(III)] complexes indicate semiconducting nature which suggests that these compounds could be used in electronic devices. Also, the complexes exhibited higher conductivity values than (HL). Photophysical studies showed good florescence properties of HL that indicated that it can be used to determine most of the drugs with no fluorescence properties by quenching and calculating quantum yield. Moreover, the hydrazide ligand (HL), has shown selectivity as an active anticancer candidate drug for both breast and colon cancer in humans. Density function theory demonstrated that, the frontier molecular orbital HOMOs of the complexes have exhibited similar behavior and the charge density has localized in the metallic region of all the studied complexes. Also, the values of the energy gap of the ligand (HL), and its complexes Pd(II), Cr(III) and Ru(III), had been arranged in this order HL > Cr(III) > Ru(III) > Pd(II). Textile industries stand out as one of the main polluters of water resources, generating large amounts of liquid effluents with variable composition and intense coloration. The objective of this work is the integration of the reductive process using commercial steel wool, combined with oxidative processes, in the treatment of textile effluent. The effect of the variables of the reductive process were studied using a 32 factorial design. After 30 minutes, the reductive process allowed a reduction of 68% COD, 46% TOC, 62% true color and 72% of total phenols, but showed an increase in color apparent and turbidity, due to the iron species formed by the oxidation of steel wool during the process. With the combined process using sunlight, the reduction was 73% COD, 50% TOC, 97% phenols, 93% true color and 48% apparent color. With artificial light, the reduction was 94% COD, 63% TOC, 95% phenols, 98% true color and 65% apparent color. The evaluation of the acute toxicity against Daphnia magna indicated that after the proposed treatments, the effluent did not present toxicity or the toxicity was reduced. It is concluded that the combined process can be considered an efficient alternative for the treatment of textile effluent.

Formation of Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) biofilm accelerates microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). The aim of this study was to investigate both the corrosivity of a marine SRB consortium on carbon steel coupons and its mitigation in the presence of ZnO. Metagenomics analysis revealed that Halodesulfovibrio (78.9%) was predominant and could be related to MIC. The analysis also showed a remarkable shift from a highly corrosive SRB consortium in the control bioreactors to a far less corrosive consortium when ZnO was added to the bioreactors. Further results indicated that the corrosion rate of the SRB consortium was 8.17 mpy on the carbon steel coupons. In the ZnO-treated bioreactors, the count of SRB and MIC in the carbon steel coupons simultaneously reduced. Moreover, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy and profilometry analysis determined that ZnO could significantly decrease the amount of biofilm and the corrosion rate. Electrochemical experiments revealed higher corrosion current density (i corr ) and lower charge transfer resistance (R ct ) in the control bioreactors relative to the ZnO-treated bioreactors. We introduce Halodesulfovibrio as a potentially important corrosive genus in a marine SRB consortium. To characterize the source and effects of bacterial communities on corrosion of intertidal structures, three different UK coastal sites were sampled for corrosion materials, sediment and seawater. Chemical analyses indicate the activity of sulfate-reducing microbes (SRBs) at 2 sites (Shoreham and Newhaven), but not at the third (Southend-on-Sea). Microbial communities in the deep sediment and corrosion samples are similar. The phylum Proteobacteria is dominant (40.4% of the total ASV), followed by Campilobacterota (11.3%), Desulfobacterota and Firmicutes (4%-5%). At lower taxonomic levels, corrosion causing bacteria, such as Shewanella sp. (6%), Colwellia sp. (7%) and Mariprofundus sp. (1%), are present. At Southend-on-sea, the relative abundance of Campilobacterota is higher compared to the other two sites. The mechanism of action of microorganisms at Shoreham and Newhaven involves biogenic sulfuric acid corrosion of iron by the combined action of SRBs and sulfur-oxidizing microbes. However, at Southend-on-sea, sulfur compounds are not implicated in corrosion, but SRBs and other electroactive microbes may play a role in which cathodic reactions (electrical MIC) and microbial enzymes (chemical MIC) are involved. Ladle slag, a by-product of steelmaking, presents a valuable strategy for waste reduction and valorization in wastewater treatment. This work demonstrates the successful simultaneous removal of Al(III), B(III), Ba(II), Cr(III), Mg(II), Sr(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II), from electroplating wastewater by ladle slag. First, Cr(III) and Pb(II) removals were evaluated in single synthetic systems by analyzing the influence of pH, temperature, and ladle slag dosage. Competitive removal was observed in binary batch experiments of Cr(III) - Pb(II), achieving 88% and 96% removal, respectively, with fast kinetics following a pseudo-second-order model. The findings of XRD, SEM, EDX, and FTIR of the slag after removal helped to elucidate the synergic removal mechanism involving ladle slag dissolution, precipitation, ion exchange, and adsorption in a tight relationship with the solution pH. Lastly, ladle slag was tested in real electroplating wastewater with the aforementioned ions at concentrations ranging from <1 to 1700 mg/L. The removal was performed in two steps, the first attained the following efficiencies: 73% for Al(III), 88% for B(III), 98% for Ba(II), 80% for Cr(III), 82% for Mg(II), 99% for Pb(II), 88% for Sr(II), and 88% for Zn(II). Visual MINTEQ simulation was utilized to identify the different species of ions present during the removal process. Furthermore, the leaching tests indicated a minimal environmental risk of secondary pollution in its application. Anaerobic digestion for flexible biogas production can lead to digestion inhibition under high shock loads. While steel slag addition has shown promise in enhancing system buffering, its limitations necessitate innovation. This study synthesized the nitrogen-doped activated carbon composite from steel slag to mitigate intermediate product accumulation during flexible biogas production. Material characterization preceded experiments introducing the composite into anaerobic digestion systems, evaluating its impact on methane production efficiency under hydraulic and concentration sudden shocks. Mechanistic insights were derived from microbial community and metagenomic analyses, facilitating the construction of the modified Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) to quantitatively assess the material's effects. Results indicate superior resistance to concentration shocks with substantial increment of methane production rate up to 33.45% compared with control group, which is mediated by direct interspecies electron transfer, though diminishing with increasing shock intensity. In the present work, Verbena Officinalis (VO) leaf extract was used as potential corrosion inhibitor for the corrosion of carbon steel (CS) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 medium. Further, the corrosion inhibiting nature of VO leaf extract towards the CS was evaluated using mass loss (ML), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and surface morphological analyses using atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Calculation of activation energy E a ∗ using Arrhenius equation shows the increase in activation energy when adding the VO leaf extract in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 medium and the maximum activation energy ( E a ∗  = 49.9 kJ mol -1 ) was observed for 1000 mg L -1 VO leaf extract in acid medium. The negative free energy values suggested the spontaneous and the stability of the adsorbed layer of VO leaf extract on the CS surface. Using EIS measurements, high percent inhibitory effectiveness of 91.1% for 1000 ppm solutions was achieved. With an increase in VO leaf extract dose, the double layer capacitance (C dl ) values fall while the values of charge transfer (R ct ) increase. This showed that a protective layer of VO leaf extract on CS surface was formed. The polarization curves showed that the VO leaf extract acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. It is discovered that the adsorption of VO leaf extract molecules adhering to the CS surface followed the Langmuir isotherm. Microorganisms in the waterline zone can secrete pigments to avoid damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, some of which have corrosive effects. In this work, we found that the secretion of pyomelanin by P3 strain of Pseudoalteromonas lipolytica significantly increases under strong lighting conditions, accelerating the corrosion of the material. Molecular mechanisms indicate that strong light, as a stressful environmental factor, enhances the expression of melanin secretion-related genes to prevent bacteria from being damaged by ultraviolet radiation. Steel mill wastewater sludge, as an iron-enriched solid waste, was expected to be converted into iron-enriched biochar with acceptable environmental risk by pyrolysis. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the chemical speciation transformation of heavy metals in biochar under various pyrolysis temperatures and its reutilization for tetracycline (TC) removal. The experimental data indicated that pyrolysis temperature was a key factor affecting the heavy metals speciation and bioavailability in biochar, and biochar with pyrolysis temperature at 450 °C was the most feasible for reutilization without potential risk. The endogenous iron-enriched biochar (FSB450) showed highly efficient adsorption towards TC, and its maximum adsorption capacity could reach 240.38 mg g -1 , which should be attributed to its excellent mesoporous structure, abundant functional groups and endogenous iron cycling. The endogenous iron was converted to a stable iron oxide crystalline phase (Fe 3 O 4 and MgFe 2 O 4 ) by pyrolysis, which underwent a valence transition to form a coordination complex with TC by electron shuttling in the FSB450 matrix. Heavy carbon industries produce solid side stream materials that contain inorganic chemicals like Ca, Na, or Mg, and other metals such as Fe or Al. These inorganic compounds usually react efficiently with CO 2 to form stable carbonates. Therefore, using these side streams instead of virgin chemicals to capture CO 2 is an appealing approach to reduce CO 2 emissions. Herein, we performed an experimental study of the mineral carbonation potential of three industrial steel slags via aqueous, direct carbonation. To this end, we studied the absorption capacities, reaction yields, and physicochemical characteristics of the carbonated samples. The absorption capacities and the reaction yields were analyzed through experiments carried out in a reactor specifically designed to work without external stirring. As for the physicochemical characterization, we used solid-state Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Using this reactor, the absorption capacities were between 5.8 and 35.3 g/L and reaction yields were in the range of 81-211 kg CO 2 /ton of slag. The physicochemical characterization of the solid products with solid FTIR, XRD and SEM indicated the presence of CaCO 3 . This study evaluated Aloe vera extract as a green inhibitor to prevent corrosion in seawater environments. A. vera extract was produced by maceration with methanol-water at room temperature. Electrochemical techniques were used to evaluate the corrosion inhibitor effectiveness of the A. vera extract. The morphology of the corrosion products was analyzed by FE-SEM equipped with EDS and AFM. FT-IR and LCMS characterized the functional and structural groups in this extract. The electrochemical measurements show that A. vera extract could effectively reduce the corrosion of API 5L steel in seawater environments. Inhibition efficiency (IE) increases with increasing concentration. Optimal corrosion inhibition efficiency of around 83.75% (PDP) and 88.60% (EIS) was obtained by adding 300 mg L -1 of extract at 310 K. Furthermore, the higher the concentration of A. vera extract, the greater the activation energy (E a ), with the highest activation energy being 48.24 kJ mol -1 for the concentration of 300 mg L -1 . Conversely, increasing the temperature and exposure duration reduces the corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) values; the best exposure period was 30 min with 88.34% IE by a concentration of 300 mg L -1 at 300 K. This corrosion inhibition is achieved by the adsorption process of A. vera bioactive on metal surfaces with a mixed inhibitor through a physisorption-chemisorption mechanism. This finding was confirmed by the smoother surface morphology of the steel treated with A. vera extract than without. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the corrosion resistance in natural seawater (Năvodari area) of two types of low-alloy carbon steels BVDH36 and LRAH36 by electrochemical methods. The electrochemical methods used were the evolution of the free potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization resistance (R p ) and corrosion rate (V corr ), potentiodynamic polarization (PD), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The studies were completed by ex situ characterization analyzes of the studied surfaces before and after corrosion such as: optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results of the study show us that the polarization resistance of the low-alloy carbon steel BVDH36 is higher compared to the polarization resistance of the low-alloy carbon steel LRAH36. It is also observed that with the increase in the immersion time of the samples in natural seawater, the polarization resistance of the BVDH36 alloy increases over time and finally decreases, and for the carbon steel LRAH36 the polarization resistance increases.

Partially encased concrete (PEC) has better mechanical properties as a structure where steel and concrete work together. Due to the increasing amount of construction waste, recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is being considered by more people. However, although RAC has more points, the performance is inferior to natural aggregate concrete (NAC). To narrow or address this gap, lightweight, high-strength and corrosion-resistant CFRP can be used, also protecting the steel flange of the PEC structure. Therefore, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) confined partially encased recycled coarse aggregate concrete columns were studied in this paper. With respect to different slenderness ratios, recycled coarse aggregate(RCA) replacement ratios, and number of CFRP layers, the performance of the proposed CFRP restrained columns are reported. The RCA replacement ratio is analyzed to be limited negative impact on the bearing capacity, generally within 6%. As for the slenderness ratio, the bearing capacity increased with it. However, wrapping CFRP significantly increased the bearing capacity. Considering the arch factor, a simple formula for calculating the ultimate strength of CFRP-confined partially encased RAC columns is developed based on EC4 and GB50017-2017. Lifting-correction is a technique to restore buildings experiencing uneven settlement, while ensuring the safety and integrity of the main structural system. This study was based on a real light-steel building structure and provided a detailed description of scenarios involving uneven settlement and the process of lifting and correction. Additionally, a sophisticated finite element (FE) model was established using the generic FE software ABAQUS, with refined material constitutive models to ensure the accuracy of simulation results. Firstly, the impact of uneven settlement on the structure was examined, including modal and stress field analyses. Different methods of breaking column (BC) and lifting column (LC) were compared and scrutinized to identify optimal approaches and minimize damage and disturbance to the building. Four methods have been proposed and compared, including simultaneously breaking columns, breaking columns with chessboard style, simultaneously lifting columns and lifting columns in multiple stages. The four methods were comprehensively evaluated from the perspectives of stress fields, displacement responses, damage and energy dissipation. The results indicated that after uneven settlement, the eigenvalues and frequencies of the structure decrease, the structure tended to be unstable. Simultaneously, as stress increases, some joints' materials enter the yielding stage, affecting the overall structural stability and safety. When damage occurs in some joints, the structural safety was compromised. The comparison between the two BC methods, including the chessboard style and simultaneously BC methods, it was revealed that the former causes less disturbance to structural initial stress field. The comparison between the two LC methods, including, simultaneously and LC in multiple stages, it was revealed that the latter performs slightly better in terms of stress fields, displacement fields, damage, energy dissipation and internal forces. Therefore, the methods of BC in chessboard style and LC in multiple stages were recommended to use in engineering practice to ensure less structural disturbance. Electroless nickel plating is a suitable technology for the hydrogen industry because electroless nickel can be mass-produced at a low cost. Investigating in a complex environment where hydrogen permeation and friction/wear work simultaneously is necessary to apply it to hydrogen valves for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. In this research, the effects of hydrogen permeation on the mechanical characteristics of electroless nickel-plated free-cutting steel (SUM 24L) were investigated. Due to the inherent characteristics of electroless nickel plating, the damage (cracks and delamination of grain) and micro-particles by hydrogen permeation were clearly observed at the grain boundaries and triple junctions. In particular, the cracks grew from grain boundary toward the intergranualr. This is because the grain boundaries and triple junctions are hydrogen permeation pathways and increasing area of the hydrogen partial pressure. As a result, its surface roughness increased by a maximum of two times, and its hardness and adhesion strength decreased by hydrogen permeation. In particular, hydrogen permeation increased the friction coefficient of the electroless nickel-plated layer, and the damage caused by adhesive wear was significantly greater, increasing the wear depth by up to 5.7 times. This is believed to be due to the decreasing in wear resistance of the electroless nickel plating layer damaged by hydrogen permeation. Nevertheless, the Vickers hardness and the friction coefficient of the electroless nickel plating layer were improved by about 3 and 5.6 times, respectively, compared with those of the free-cutting steel. Steel cord materials were found to have internal porous microstructures and complex fluid flow properties. However, current studies have rarely reported the transport behavior of steel cord materials from a microscopic viewpoint. The computed tomography (CT) scanning technology and lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) were used in this study to reconstruct and compare the real three-dimensional (3D) pore structures and fluid flow in the original and tensile (by loading 800 N force) steel cord samples. The pore-scale LBM results showed that fluid velocities increased as displacement differential pressure increased in both the original and tensile steel cord samples, but with two different critical values of 3.3273 Pa and 2.6122 Pa, respectively. The original steel cord sample had higher maximal and average seepage velocities at the 1/2 sections of 3D construction images than the tensile steel cord sample. These phenomena should be attributed to the fact that when the original steel cord sample was stretched, its porosity decreased, pore radius increased, flow channel connectivity improved, and thus flow velocity increased. Moreover, when the internal porosity of tensile steel cord sample was increased by 1 time, lead the maximum velocity to increase by 1.52 times, and the average velocity was increased by 1.66 times. Furthermore, when the density range was determined to be 0-38, the pore phase showed the best consistency with the segmentation area. This first study investigated the presence of dioxins and furans in river sediments around a craft village in Vietnam, focusing on Secondary Steel Recycling. Sediment samples were collected from various locations along the riverbed near the Da Hoi Secondary Steel Recycling village in Bac Ninh province. The analysis was conducted using a HRGC/HRMS-DFS device, detecting a total of 17 dioxin/furan isomers in all samples, with an average total concentration of 288.86 ng/kg d.w. The concentrations of dioxin/furan congeners showed minimal variation among sediment samples, ranging from 253.9 to 344.2 ng/kg d.w. The predominant compounds in the dioxin group were OCDD, while in the furan group, they were 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF and OCDF. The chlorine content in the molecule appeared to be closely related to the concentration of dioxins and their percentage distribution. However, the levels of furan isomers did not vary significantly. The distribution of these compounds was not dependent on the flow direction, as they were mainly found in solid waste and are not water-soluble. Although the hepta and octa congeners had high concentrations, when converted to TEQ values, the tetra and penta groups (for dioxins) and the penta and hexa groups (for furans) contributed more to toxicity. Furthermore, the source of dioxins in sediments at Da Hoi does not only originate from steel recycling production activities but also from other combustion sites. The average total toxicity was 10.92 ng TEQ/kg d.w, ranging from 4.99 to 17.88 ng TEQ/kg d.w, which did not exceed the threshold specified in QCVN 43:2017/BTNMT, the National Technical Regulation on Sediment Quality. Nonetheless, these levels are still concerning. The presence of these toxic substances not only impacts aquatic organisms in the sampled water environment but also poses potential health risks to residents living nearby.

A mechanical device inspired by the pistol shrimp snapper claw was developed. This technology features a claw characterized by a periodic opening/closing motion, at a controlled frequency, capable of producing oscillating flows at transitional Reynolds numbers. An innovative method was also proposed for determining the corrosion rate of carbon steel samples under oscillating acidic streams (aqueous solution of HCl). By employing very-thin carbon steel specimens (25 μm thickness), with one side coated with Zn and not exposed to the stream, it became possible to electrochemically sense the Zn surface once the steel sample was perforated, thus providing the average dissolution rate into the most relevant pit on the steel surface. Furthermore, a laser light positioned beneath the metallic sample, along with a camera programmed to periodically capture images of the steel surface, facilitated the accurate counting of the number of newly formed pits. The system consisting of the thin steel sample and the Zn coating can be seen as a type of corrosion sensor. Furthermore, the proposed laser illumination method allows corroborating the electrochemical detection of pits and also establishing their location. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used to treat wastewater, while innovative studies are needed to support resource conservation, enhance multi-functionality, and improve the effectiveness of effluent usage. This study assessed the potential of CW's multiple functions by combining low-rank coal (lignite) and industrial waste (steel slag) in different configurations as CW substrates. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and metagenomic sequencing showed that the experimental treatment with lignite and steel slag mixtures had the highest multi-functionality, including efficient nutrient removal and carbon sequestration, as well as hydroponic crop production. Lignite and steel slag were mixed to form lignite-steel slag particle clusters, where Ca 2+ dissolved on the surface of steel slag was combined with PO 4 3- in wastewater to form Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 precipitation for phosphorus removal. A biofilm grew on the surface of lignite in this cluster, and OH - released from steel slag promoted lignite to release fulvic acid, which provided a carbon source for heterotrophic microorganisms and promoted denitrification. Moreover, fulvic acid enhanced carbon sequestration in CWs by increasing the biomass of Phragmites australis. The effluent from lignite-steel slag CW increased cherry tomato yield and quality while saving N and P applications. In this study, sulfur dots (GA-SDs) synthesized by using Gum Arabic (GA) as a green stabilizer were used as corrosion inhibitors and their inhibition effect for Q235 steel in 3.5- wt% NaCl solution was investigated by weight loss, electrochemical tests, and surface and interface analysis. The results revealed that the inhibition efficiency reached the maximum value of 96.5% at 250 mg/L and the water-soluble GA-SDs were able to adhere to the iron surface through the diffusion and agglomeration effect. The unique antibacterial activities demonstrated a 99.35% inhibition efficiency at 250 mg/L. Moreover, the optical properties endowed the inhibitors with the fluorescence tracing function, which is an effective approach to detecting the residual quantity of water treatment agents. A novel Schiff base [4-(morpholin-4-yl) benzylidenyl]thiosemicarbazide (MBT) was created by reaction condensation. The molecules of the products were verified by IR, 1 HNMR, MS, and elemental techniques. The synergistic effect of KI with novel MBT on 304 stainless steel (SS) in acidic has been investigated experimentally and theoretically using DFT. The findings demonstrate that restriction efficacy on 304 SS improved with rising inhibitor concentrations, and this benefit was attributed to synergy when KI was injected. From EIS results, IE % increased with a higher concentration of MBT only and MBT + KI (from 100 to 600 ppm). MBT maximum IE % was 84.98%, at 600 ppm. MBT + KI, due to the I - ions synergistic effect, showed an IE% of about 95.48%, at 600 ppm. The adsorptions of MBT and MBT + KI on the surfaces of 304 SS are strongly fitted Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Thermodynamic parameters (K ads , ΔG 0 ads ) were utilized. According to polarization findings, MBT behaves as a mixed-category antagonist. The Schiff base MBT was screened for its in vitro antimicrobial activities against some strains of bacteria and fungi. The simultaneous nitrate (NO 3 - -N) and phosphorus (P) removal systems are considered to be an effective wastewater treatment technology. However, so far, there are few studies on system optimization to improve NO 3 - -N and P removal. In this study, nine simultaneous NO 3 - -N and P removal biofilters (SNPBs) were constructed to treat simulated wastewater. In order to optimize the NO 3 - -N and P removal, different material loading positions were set: (1) red soil, steel slag, and rice straw (RSR), (2) steel slag, red soil, and rice straw (SRR), and (3) red soil, rice straw, and steel slag (RRS). Results showed that the above three treatments had mean removal efficiencies of 58%-91% for NO 3 - -N and 55%-81% for TP, with the best N and P removal occurring in the SRR. The TN mass balance indicated that microbial removal was responsible for 78.2% of the influent TN in the SRR biofilter. The key microorganisms were Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Diaphorobacter, and unclassified&#95;f&#95;Enterobacteriaceae, which accounted for 61.9% of the total microorganisms. The main P-removal mechanism was the formation of Al-P, Fe-P, and Ca-P in red soil or steel slag layer. In addition, the decrease of SRR effluent pH from 11.86 in 1-7 days to 7.75 in 8-50 days indicated that red soil and rice straw had a synergistic effect on water pH reduction. Due to high material density, high energy consumption density and CO 2 emission density, it is not only difficult but significant to clarify the relationship between energy consumption, the CO 2 emission and the production cost in different conditions. However, the previous researches rarely refer how to balance the energy consumption, the CO 2 emission and the production cost after the fluctuation of material, energy and carbon price as well as what will happen to them if production structure changes. Therefore, based on the conservation law of mass and energy, to study iron and steel manufacturing process (ISMP), this paper, taking carbon price into consideration, establishes a muti-optimization model of energy consumption, CO 2 emission and cost. After optimization with different objectives, the production cost per tonne of crude steel is reduced by 192.03 CNY (7.71%), the CO 2 emission per tonne of crude steel is reduced by 224.22 kg (13.37%), and the energy consumption per tonne of steel is reduced by 51.20 kgce (9.10%). An easy synthesis of two 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives, namely, 2-phenyl-5-(pyridin-3-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (POX) and 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-(pyridin-3-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (4-PMOX), and their corrosion-inhibition efficacy against mild steel corrosion in 1 N HCl, is evaluated using weight loss from 303 to 323 K, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), UV-Vis spectroscopy, along with theoretical evaluation. Both POX and 4-PMOX exhibit excellent inhibition efficiency, with values reaching 97.83% and 98% at 500 ppm, respectively. The PDP analysis reveals that both derivatives act as mixed-type inhibitors. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm provides insights into the adsorption phenomena, demonstrating that 4-PMOX exhibits superior adsorption behavior on the mild steel surface compared to POX. This finding is further supported by SEM, DFT, RDF, and MSD analyses. Quantum mechanical parameters, including E HOMO , E LUMO , dipole moment (μ), energy gap (ΔE), etc., are in good agreement with the effectiveness of inhibition performance revealing ΔE values of 3.10 and 2.75 for POX and 4-PMOX, respectively. In this study, the corrosion inhibition performance of the natural polysaccharide guar gum (GG) for N80 carbon steel in CO 2 -saturated saline solution at different temperatures and immersion times was investigated by weight loss and electrochemical measurements. The results have revealed that GG showed good inhibition performance at lower and higher temperatures. The inhibition efficiency observed via weight loss measurements reached 76.16 and 63.19% with 0.4 g L -1 of GG, at 25 and 50 °C, respectively. The inhibition efficiency of GG increased as the inhibitor concentration and immersion time increased but decreased with increasing temperature. EIS measurements have shown that, even after prolonged exposure, GG was still able to protect the metal surface. Potentiodynamic measurements showed the mixed-type nature of GG inhibitive action. The Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm models give accurate fitting of the estimated data, and the calculated parameters indicated that the adsorption of GG occurred mainly via an electrostatic or physical adsorption process. The associated activation energy ( E a ) and the heat of adsorption ( Q a ) supported the physical adsorption nature of GG. FTIR analysis was used to explain the adsorption interaction between the inhibitor and the N80 carbon steel surface. SEM-EDS and AFM confirmed the adsorption of GG and the formation of an adsorptive layer of GG on the metal surface.

The synthesis of 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-[1,2,4]triazolo[5,1-b]quinazolin-9(4H)-one (THTQ), a potentially biologically active compound, was pursued, and its structure was determined through a sequence of spectral analysis, including 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, IR, and HRMS. Four bacterial and four fungal strains were evaluated for their susceptibility to the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the THTQ compound using the well diffusion method. The impact of THTQ on the corrosion of mild steel in a 1 M HCl solution was evaluated using various methods such as weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The study revealed that the effectiveness of THTQ as an inhibitor increased with the concentration but decreased with temperature. The PDP analysis suggested that THTQ acted as a mixed-type inhibitor, whereas the EIS data showed that it created a protective layer on the steel surface. This protective layer occurs due to the adsorption behavior of THTQ following Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. The inhibition potential of THTQ is also predicted theoretically using DFT at B3LYP and Monte Carlo simulation.

α-aminophosphonate (α-AP) is used as a novel corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel. The aggressive media applied in this study are HCl and H 2 SO 4 acid solutions. The findings indicate that the morphology of the α-AP compound is cubic, with particles ranging in size from 17 to 23 μm. FT-IR, 1 HNMR, 31 PNMR, and 13 CNMR analysis confirmed the synthesis of the α-AP molecule. It has been discovered that the compound α-AP plays an important role in inhibiting the corrosion of carbon steel in both HCl and H 2 SO 4 acids. This was identifiably inferred from the fact that the addition of α-AP compound decreased the corrosion rate. It is important to report that the maximum inhibition efficiency (92.4% for HCl and 95.7% for H 2 SO 4 ) was obtained at 180 ppm. The primary factor affecting the rate at which steel specimens corrode in acidic electrolytes is the tendency of α-AP compounds to adsorb on the surface of steel through their heteroatoms (O, N, and P). This was verified by SEM/EDX results. The adsorption actually occurs through physical and chemical mechanisms via different active centers which are matched with the calculated quantum parameters. In addition, the adsorption of α-AP follows the Langmuir isotherm.

The corrosion inhibition properties of 2-(1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-yl)pyrrolidine (2-TP) on mild steel in a 1 M HCl solution were investigated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open circuit potential (OCP) measurements. In addition, DFT calculations were performed on 2-TP. The polarization curves revealed that 2-TP is a mixed-type inhibitor. The results indicate that 2-TP is an effective inhibitor for mild steel corrosion in a 1.0 M HCl solution, with an inhibition efficiency of 94.6% at 0.5 mM 2-TP. The study also examined the impact of temperature, revealing that the inhibition efficiency increases with an increasing concentration of 2-TP and decreases with a rise in temperature. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the free energy value indicated that the adsorption of 2-TP is a spontaneous process that involves both physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. The DFT calculations showed that the adsorption of 2-TP on the mild steel surface is mainly through the interaction of the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom of the thiadiazole ring with the metal surface. The results obtained from the weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, EIS and OCP measurements were in good agreement with each other and confirmed the effectiveness of 2-TP as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1.0 M HCl solution. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) caused by biofilm is a serious problem in many industries. D-amino acids could be a potential strategy to enhance traditional corrosion inhibitors due to their roles in biofilm reduction. However, the synergistic mechanism of D-amino acids and inhibitors remains unknown. In this study, D-Phenylalanine (D-Phe) and 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) were selected as the typical D-amino acid and corrosion inhibitor to evaluate their effect on the corrosion caused by Desulfovibrio vulgaris. The combination of HEDP and D-Phe obviously slowed down the corrosion process by 32.25%, decreased the corrosion pit depth and retarded cathodic reaction. SEM and CLSM analysis indicated that D-Phe reduced the content of extracellular protein and thus inhibited the biofilm formation. The molecular mechanism of D-Phe and HEDP on corrosion inhibition was further explored via transcriptome. The combination of HEDP and D-Phe down-regulated the gene expression of peptidoglycan, flagellum, electron transfer, ferredoxin and quorum sensing (QS) molecules, leading to less peptidoglycan synthesis, weaker electron transfer and stronger QS factor inhibition. Novel imine-tethering cationic surfactants, namely (E)-3-((2-chlorobenzylidene)amino)- N -(2-(decyloxy)-2-oxoethyl)- N,N -dimethylpropan-1-aminium chloride (ICS-10) and (E)-3-((2-chlorobenzylidene)amino)- N,N -dimethyl- N -(2-oxo-2-(tetradecyloxy)ethyl)propan-1-aminium chloride (ICS-14), were synthesized, and the chemical structures were elucidated by various spectroscopic approaches. The surface properties of the target-prepared imine-tethering cationic surfactants were investigated. The effects of both synthesized imine surfactants on carbon steel corrosion in a 1.0 M HCl solution were investigated by weight loss (WL), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. The outcomes show that the inhibition effectiveness rises with raising the concentration and diminishes with raising the temperature. The inhibition efficiency of 91.53 and 94.58 % were attained in the presence of the optimum concentration of 0.5 mM of ICS-10 and ICS-14, respectively. The activation energy ( E a ) and heat of adsorption ( Q ads ) were calculated and explained. Additionally, the synthesized compounds were investigated using density functional theory (DFT). Monte Carlo (MC) simulation was utilized to understand the mechanism of adsorption of inhibitors on the Fe (110) surface.

Here, to prevent the corrosion of Q235 steel in the pickling and discover novel green corrosion inhibitors, the corrosion inhibition performance and eco-toxicity of cinchonain IIa were evaluated. Electrochemical experiments confirms that 200 mg/L cinchonain IIa reveals good corrosion inhibition performance with 94.08% on Q235 steel in HCl for 48 h. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) observations suggest that cinchonain IIa can be firmly attached to the metal surface by forming a barrier film. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results further verify the bonding interaction between the functional groups and the steel matrix, and indicate the existence of protective film on the steel. Meanwhile, the inhibition mechanism at the molecular/atomic level is revealed through molecular dynamics simulation. Additionally, acute toxicity test shows that cinchonain IIa is a low toxic corrosion inhibitor. Moreover, the antioxidant enzyme activity experiments confirm that cinchonain IIa discloses no obvious damage to the antioxidant system of zebrafish. Overall, cinchonain IIa exhibits low potential risks to the healthy development of aquatic organisms and ecosystems. This study examines the utilization of the expired drug, namely ampicillin, as a mild steel corrosion inhibitor in an acidic environment. The inhibitor was evaluated using weight loss and electrochemical measurement accompanied with surface analytical techniques. The drug showed a potential inhibitory efficiency of > 95% at 55 °C. The inclusion of the inhibitor increased the charge transfer resistance at the steel-solution interface, according to impedance analyses. According to potentiodynamic polarisation measurements, expired ampicillin drug significantly decreased the corrosion current density and worked as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was followed by the adsorption of ampicillin drug on the steel substrate, exhibiting an association of physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. In the present work, synthesis and characterization of 15 ionic liquids (ILs) derived from quaternary ammonium and carboxylates were carried out in order to proceed to their evaluation as corrosion inhibitors (CIs) of API X52 steel in 0.5 M HCl. Potentiodynamic tests confirmed the inhibition efficiency ( IE ) as a function of the chemical configuration of the anion and cation. It was observed that the presence of two carboxylic groups in long linear aliphatic chains reduced the IE , whereas in shorter chains it was increased. Tafel-polarization results revealed the ILs as mixed-type CIs and that the IE was directly proportional to the CI concentration. The compounds with the best IE were 2-amine-benzoate of N,N,N-trimethyl-hexadecan-1-ammonium ([THDA + ][ - AA]), 3-carboxybut-3-enoate of N,N,N-trimethyl-hexadecan-1-ammonium ([THDA + ][ - AI]), and dodecanoate of N,N,N-trimethyl-hexadecan-1-ammonium ([THDA + ][ - AD]) within the 56-84% interval. Furthermore, it was found that the ILs obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and inhibited the corrosion of steel through a physicochemical process. Finally, the surface analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed less steel damage in the presence of CI due to the inhibitor-metal interaction.

In the present research work, the temperature effect on the corrosion inhibition process of API 5L X60 steel in 1 M H 2 SO 4 by employing three vinylimidazolium poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) was studied by means of electrochemical techniques, surface analysis and computational simulation. The results revealed that the maximal inhibition efficiency (75%) was achieved by Poly[VIMC4][Im] at 308 K and 175 ppm. The PILs showed E corr displacements with respect to the blank from -14 mV to -31 mV, which revealed the behavior of mixed-type corrosion inhibitors (CIs). The steel micrographs, in the presence and absence of PILs, showed less surface damage in the presence of PILs, thus confirming their inhibiting effect. The computational studies of the molecular orbitals and molecular electrostatic potential of the monomers suggested that the formation of a protecting film could be mainly due to the nitrogen and oxygen heteroatoms present in each structure.

Steel slag has been proven to be an effective environment remediation media for acid neutralization, and a potential aid to mitigate acid mine drainage (AMD). Yet its acid neutralization capacity (ANC) is frequently inhibited by precipitate after a period of time, while the characteristics of the precipitate formation process are unclear yet. In this study, ANC for basic oxygen steel slag was conducted by neutralization experiments with dilute sulfuric acid (0.1 M) and real AMD. Some partially neutralized steel slag samples were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy combined with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and N 2 adsorption tests to investigate the potential formation process of the precipitate. The results indicated that Ca-bearing constitutes leaching and sulfate formation were two main reactions throughout the neutralization process. A prominent transition turning point from leaching to precipitate was at about 40% of the neutralization process. Tricalcium silicate (Ca 3 SiO 5 ) played a dominant role in the alkalinity-releasing stage among Ca-bearing components, while the new-formed well crystalline CaSO 4 changed the microstructure of steel slag and further hindered alkaline components releasing. For steel slag of 200 mesh size, the ANC value for the steel slag sample was 8.23 mmol H + /g when dilute sulfate acid was used. Neutralization experiments conducted by real AMD confirmed that the steel slag ANC was also influenced by the high contaminants, such as Fe 2+ , due to the hydroxides precipitate reactions except for sulfate formation reactions.

In recent years, green corrosion inhibitors derived from natural plant resources have garnered much interest. In the present work, at first, we investigated the corrosion behavior of mild steel (st-37) in the presence, and absence of Dracocephalum extract based on bulk size as a corrosion inhibitor in two widely used acidic environments (0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , and 1.0 M HCl), at room temperature. Then, we used Dracocephalum extract based on nanometer size to reduce the optimal concentration of inhibitor, increase the corrosion resistant, and efficiency. Dracocephalum extract does not contain heavy metals or other toxic compounds, and also good characteristics such as low cost, eco-friendly, and widespread availability, make it suitable nature candidate as an environmentally safe green inhibitor. The anticorrosive behavior was assessed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PP). In all of the studies, the inhibitory efficiency (IE%) increased as the extract dose was increased. But by using nano extract, in addition to maintaining high efficiency, the amount of inhibitor was reduced significantly. The highest IE% is 94% at the best dose of nano extract (75 ppm), but the highest IE% is 89% at the best dose of the bulk extract (200 ppm) in H 2 SO 4 solution. Also, for the HCl solution, the highest IE% is 88% at the best dose of nano extract (100 ppm), but the highest IE% is 90% at the best dose of the bulk extract (400 ppm), by polarization method. The PP results suggest that this compound has an effect on both anodic, and cathodic processes, and that it adsorbs on mild steel surface according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Experimental weight loss and electrochemical measurements were used at ambient and high temperatures to evaluate the corrosion inhibition efficacies of diaminodecane functionalized graphene oxide (DAD-GO) and diaminododecane functionalized graphene oxide (DADD-GO) against carbon steel corrosion in 15.0 %HCl, mimicking an acidizing environment in an oil/gas well. The GO was made from waste graphite and then grafted with the diaminoalkanes (DAD & DADD). The GO and functionalized GOs were described using FTIR, Raman, TEM, and TGA. Concentration and temperature effects on the inhibitors'performance were also looked into. The inhibition efficiency increased with concentration at room temperature, reaching a maximum of 84 % for DAD-GO and 78 % for DADD-GO at a concentration of 5 ppm for both. At the temperatures studied, the inhibitors performed well at extremely low concentrations; however, as the temperature rises, the inhibitor's performance decreases. According to the PDP measurement, the inhibitors function primarily as mixed-type inhibitors. The Langmuir adsorption theory was found to be followed by thestudied compound. AFM, SEM, EDX, and FTIR characterization of the steel surfaces revealed that the functionalized GOs molecules adsorbed on the steel to create a protective layer that insulated the steel from aggressiveacid assault after the immersion time (24 h) in the inhibited solutions. DFT calculations were utilized to determine the relative stability of functionalized GOs toGOand to learn more about the inhibitor molecules' interactions with the steel surface. The DFT calculations corroborated the experimental findings. The corrosion of steel bars in concrete has a significant impact on the durability of constructed structures. Based on the gray relational analysis (GRA) of the accelerated corrosion data and practical engineering data using MATLAB, a back propagation neural network (BPNN) model, a multivariable gray prediction model (GM (1, N)), and an optimization multivariable gray prediction model (OGM (1, N)) of steel corrosion were established by using a sequence of the key affecting factors. By comparing the prediction results of the three models, it is found that the GM (1, N) model has larger fitting and prediction errors for steel corrosion, while the OGM (1, N) model has smaller prediction errors in the accelerated corrosion data; the BPNN model offers more accurate predictions of the practical engineering data. A series of novel 1- N -α-d-glucopyranosyl-1 H -1,2,3-triazole xanthines was synthesized from azido sugars (glucose, galactose, and lactose) and propargyl xanthines (theophylline and theobromine) using a typical copper (I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. The corrosion inhibition activities of these new carbohydrate-xanthine compounds were evaluated by studying the corrosion of API 5 L X70 steel in a 1 M HCl medium. The results showed that, at 10 ppm, a 90% inhibition efficiency was reached by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The inhibitory efficiency of these molecules is explained by means of quantum chemical calculations of the protonated species with the solvent effect, which seems to better represent the actual situation of the experimental conditions. Converting industrial wastes into value-added building products in an environmental management strategy is a challenging yet vital component of the industrial process. Steel slag (SS), an industrial waste by-product from the steel-making process, is typically disposed of in landfill which consumes land resources and pollutes the environment. This paper explores the possibility of a closed-loop system to convert steel slag into a cement material through carbonation activation, thereby significantly reducing the amount of steel slag waste sent to landfills across Canada. The production of this cementing material can occur next to the steel mill, utilizing steel slag and carbon dioxide collected on-site to fabricate carbon-negative products. To save energy and allow production to be feasible on an industrial scale, ambient pressure (AP) carbonation is developed to reduce carbon emissions while improving their performance. High pressure (HP) carbonation curing and normal hydration (NH) references were also implemented at the same time to justify the application of AP carbonation in reducing CO 2 emission. The results of this study found AP carbonation-activated SS compacts have comparable CO 2 uptake (about 7.5 tons CO 2 /100 tons slag) and mechanically compressive strength values as those subjected to HP carbonation, suggesting that AP could be used to replace HP in carbonation curing to ensure a lower energy input. Additionally, AP seemed to possess as effective carbonation as HP. The studies investigated by multiple techniques including X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopic analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) aim to identify the microstructure development of carbonated SS paste to assess carbonation results. Developed with life cycle assessment (LCA), environmental impact evaluation shows that AP presents a smaller global warming potential (GWP) value than HP. The comparable CO 2 sequestration, satisfactory engineering properties, enhanced microstructure and lesser environmental impact in AP carbonation confirm the feasibility of replacing high pressure with extremely low pressure to cure concrete products. Offshore support structures and mooring systems are predominantly subject to corrosion and fatigue. These structures are typically covered with marine growth of various types. Conventional inspection methods for assessment of the structural integrity require access to the cleaned surface of these structures; however, the cleaning process is highly undesirable from the technical, economical, and environmental points of view. This paper highlights research on feasibility assessment of detection and localization of corrosion damage under marine growth using acoustic emission (AE). Experiments were conducted on two carbon steel plates, one baseline sample and one covered with artificially fabricated marine growth. The results of accelerated corrosion experiments suggest that corrosion-induced ultrasound signals can be detected with satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio using non-contact AE sensors. Ultrasound waves passing through marine growth showed around 12 dB drop in amplitude when compared to the base plate. Phosphoric acid is the core material for the fertilizer industry; however, it is incredibly corrosive to manufacturing plants' structures, mainly steel. Corrosion is one of the most severe problems encountered during phosphate fertilizer manufacturing. Recently, plant extracts have been commonly used as corrosion inhibitors because they are cheap and environmentally friendly. Steel corrosion in a 20% aqueous phosphoric acid solution in the absence and presence of fenugreek seed (Fen) or cape gooseberry leaf (CgL) extracts was investigated using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique, potentiodynamic polarization measurement, scanning electron microscope, and quantum chemical calculations. Fourier Transform Infrared, FTIR, was used to identify the functional groups in Fen and CgL extracts. The inhibition efficiency for steel in 20% aqueous phosphoric acid was roughly equal to 80% for 0.4 g/L CgL and 1.2 g/L Fen extracts. A scanning electron microscope showed that the chemical constituents of extracts block the surface roughness of steel, decreasing the corrosion rate. The activation parameters indicated the effectiveness of the extracts at a higher temperature. Measurements of the potential of zero charges showed that the steel surface is positively charged in the phosphoric acid solution. In this study, two types of Rare Earth (RE) 3-furoate complexes were synthesized by metathesis reactions between RE chlorides or nitrates and preformed sodium 3-furoate. Two different structural motifs were identified as Type 1RE and Type 2RE . The Type 1RE monometallic complexes form 2D polymeric networks with the composition [RE(3fur) 3 (H 2 O) 2 ] n ( 1RE = 1La, 1Ce, 1Pr, 1Nd, 1Gd, 1Dy, 1Ho, 1Y; 3furH = 3-furoic acid) while Type 2RE bimetallic complexes form 3D polymeric systems [NaRE(3fur) 4 ] n ( 2RE = 2Ho, 2Y, 2Er, 2Yb, 2Lu). The stoichiometric mole ratio used (RE: Na(3fur) = 1:3 or 1:4) in the metathesis reaction determines whether 1RE or 2RE (RE = Ho or Y) is formed, but 2RE (RE = Er, Yb, Lu) were obtained regardless of the ratio. The corrosion inhibition behaviour of the compounds has been examined using immersion studies and electrochemical measurements on AS1020 mild steel surfaces by a 0.01 M NaCl medium. Immersion test results revealed that [Y(3fur) 3 (H 2 O) 2 ] n has the highest corrosion inhibition capability with 90% resistance after 168 h of immersion. Potentiodynamic polarisation (PP) measurements also indicate the dominant behaviour of the 1Y compound, and the PP curves show that these rare earth carboxylate compounds act predominantly as anodic inhibitors.

Traditional corrosion inhibitors make great contribution to metal protection, but also cause environmental pollution. To solve the problem, plant extracts as green corrosion inhibitors have attracted much attention in recent years. Plants are good raw materials for corrosion inhibitors and also meet the requirements of industry. However, they have not been successfully applied in industry due to the unknown composition of the effective corrosion inhibitors and large dosage thereof. Therefore, cinchonain IIa was separated from Uncaria laevigata with abundant sources and low cost from nature in this work. Here we hypothesized that cinchonain IIa could show good corrosion inhibition performance for Q235 steel in the acidic medium. Through experiments and theoretical calculation, we studied the corrosion inhibition effect of cinchonain IIa on Q235 in 1 M HCl solution at 298 K for 48 h. Electrochemical experiments revealed that the inhibition efficiency of 200 mg/L cinchonain IIa in 1 M HCl for Q235 steel was 94.08% for 48 h. It even showed over 93% corrosion inhibition efficiency and durable protection performance to 28 d. Surface observations indicated that cinchonain IIa were firmly attached to the steel surface by forming a protective film. Moreover, quantum chemical calculation and molecular dynamics simulation revealed the inhibition mechanism at molecular and atomic level. Compared with some plant extracts, here we demonstrate that the outstanding advantages of cinchonain IIa include sustained protective effect, small dosage, and low toxicity.
