Search

Satellite constellation interference occurs across astronomical disciplines. We present examples of interference from radio and $\gamma$-Ray astronomy to optical and spectroscopic interference in ground-based and space-borne facilities. In particular, we discuss the impact of artificial satellites on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope, as well as possible mitigation strategies for the European Southern Observatory 4-metre Multi-Object Spectrograph Telescope (ESO 4MOST). By combining newly obtained deep GBT 21cm observations with optical spectroscopic data, we present an analysis of the gas content of BreakBRD galaxies, a population denoted by their blue star-forming centers and red quenched disks that do not appear to follow the typical inside-out evolution of spiral galaxies. We confirm previous results that the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas fractions of BreakBRDs are on-average lower than those of typical galaxies on the star-forming sequence (SFS), and find that their \ion{H}{1} fractions are generally higher than Green Valley (GV) galaxies. HI depletion times for BreakBRDs are roughly an order of magnitude lower than those of SFS galaxies, in stark contrast with GV galaxies that typically have much longer depletion times than SFS galaxies. The nuclear gas-phase metallicities of BreakBRDs have a broader distribution than SFS galaxies and are skewed towards slightly above-average values. BreakBRDs are systematically offset from the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation towards lower baryonic mass at a given rotation velocity. They also have higher typical HI asymmetries than SFS galaxies, and of those galaxies with spatially resolved gas velocity fields from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, two-thirds are either highly distorted or completely misaligned relative to the stellar disk. Evidence supports a scenario where BreakBRDs are in an early phase of quenching, and there is mixed evidence that their behavior is related to past merger activity., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. The atomic-to-molecular gas conversion is a critical step in the baryon cycle of galaxies, which sets the initial conditions for subsequent star formation and influences the multi-phase interstellar medium. We compiled a sample of 94 nearby galaxies with observations of multi-phase gas contents by utilizing public H I, CO, and optical IFU data from the MaNGA survey together with new FAST H I observations. In agreement with previous results, our sample shows that the global molecular-to-atomic gas ratio ($R_{\rm mol} \equiv$ log $M_{\rm H_2}/M_{\rm H\ I}$) is correlated with the global stellar mass surface density $\mu_*$ with a Kendall's $\tau$ coefficient of 0.25 and $p < 10^{-3}$, less tightly but still correlated with stellar mass and NUV$-$ r color, and not related to the specific star formation rate (sSFR). The cold gas distribution and kinematics inferred from the H I and CO global profile asymmetry and shape do not significantly rely on $R_{\rm mol}$. Thanks to the availability of kpc-scale observations of MaNGA, we decompose galaxies into H II, composite, and AGN-dominated regions by using the BPT diagrams. With increasing $R_{\rm mol}$, the fraction of H II regions within 1.5 effective radius decreases slightly; the density distribution in the spatially resolved BPT diagram also changes significantly, suggesting changes in metallicity and ionization states. Galaxies with high $R_{\rm mol}$ tend to have high oxygen abundance, both at one effective radius with a Kendall's $\tau$ coefficient of 0.37 ($p < 10^{-3}$) and their central regions. Among all parameters investigated here, the oxygen abundance at one effective radius has the strongest relation with global $R_{\rm mol}$, but the dependence of gas conversion on gas distribution and galaxy ionization states is weak., Comment: Accepted by SCPMA. Gas rich galaxies are typically star-forming. We make use of HI-MaNGA, a program of HI follow-up for the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys to construct a sample of unusual neutral hydrogen (HI, 21cm) rich galaxies which have low Star Formation Rates (SFRs); using infra-red color from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) as a proxy for specific SFR. Out of a set of 1575 MaNGA galaxies with HI-MaNGA detections, we find 83 (5%) meet our selection criteria to be HI rich with low SFR. We construct two stellar mass-matched control samples: HI rich galaxies with typical SFR (High SF Control) and HI poor galaxies with low SFR (Low HI Control). We investigate the properties of each of these samples, comparing physical parameters such as ionization state maps, stellar and ionized gas velocity and dispersion, environment measures, metallicity, and morphology to search for the reasons why these unusual HI rich galaxies are not forming stars. We find evidence for recent external accretion of gas in some galaxies (via high counter-rotating fractions), along with some evidence for AGN feedback (from a high cLIER and/or red geyser fraction), and bar quenching (via an enhanced strong bar fraction). Some galaxies in the sample are consistent with simply having their HI in a high angular momentum, large radius, low density disc. We compare an observed Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation (BTFR) from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) and HI-MaNGA surveys to a simulated BTFR from the cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG. To do so, we calibrate the BTFR of the local universe using 377 galaxies from the MaNGA and HI-MaNGA surveys, and perform mock 21 cm observations of matching galaxies from IllustrisTNG. The mock observations are used to ensure that the comparison with the observed galaxies is fair since it has identical measurement algorithms, observational limitations, biases and uncertainties. For comparison, we also calculate the BTFR for the simulation without mock observations, and demonstrate how mock observations are necessary to fairly and consistently compare between observational and theoretical data. We report a MaNGA BTFR of log$_{10} (M_{ \rm Bary}/M_\odot)= (2.97 \pm 0.18)$ log$_{10} V_{ \rm Rot} + (4.04 \pm 0.41)\,\log_{10}{M_{\odot}}$ and an IllustrisTNG BTFR of log$_{10} (M_{ \rm Bary}/M_\odot) = (2.94 \pm 0.23$) log$_{10} V_{ \rm Rot} + (4.15 \pm 0.44)\,\log_{10}{M_{\odot}}$. Thus, MaNGA and IllustrisTNG produce BTFRs that agree within uncertainties, demonstrating that IllustrisTNG has created a galaxy population that obeys the observed relationship between mass and rotation velocity in the observed universe., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Red geysers are a specific type of quiescent galaxy, denoted by twin jets emerging from their galactic centers. These bisymmetric jets possibly inject energy and heat into the surrounding material, effectively suppressing star formation by stabilizing cool gas. In order to confirm the presence and evolutionary consequences of these jets, this paper discusses the scaling, stacking, and conversion of 21-cm HI flux data sourced from the HI-MaNGA survey into HI gas-to-stellar mass (G/S) spectra. Our samples were dominated by non-detections, or galaxies with weak HI signals, and consequently by HI upper limits. The stacking technique discussed successfully resolved emission features in both the red geyser G/S spectrum and the control sample G/S spectrum. From these stacked spectra, we find that on average, red geyser galaxies have G/S of 0.086 $\pm$ 0.011(random)+0.029(systematic), while non-red geyser galaxies of similar stellar mass have a G/S ratio of 0.039 $\pm$ 0.018(random)+0.013(systematic). Therefore, we find no statistically significant evidence that the HI content of red geysers is different from the general quiescent population., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to be published in MNRAS

Post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) have recently and rapidly quenched their star-formation, thus they are an important way to understand how galaxies transition from star-forming late-types to quiescent early-types. The recent discovery of large cold gas reservoirs in PSBs calls into question the theory that galaxies must lose their gas to become quiescent. Optical Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) surveys have revealed two classes of PSBs: central PSBs with central quenching regions and ring PSBs with quenching in their outskirts. We analyze a sample of 13 nearby (z < 0.1) PSBs with spatially resolved optical IFS data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey and matched resolution Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of $^{12}$CO(1-0). Disturbed stellar kinematics in 7/13 of our PSBs and centrally concentrated molecular gas is consistent with a recent merger for most of our sample. In galaxies without merger evidence, alternate processes may funnel gas inwards and suppress star-formation, which may include outflows, stellar bars, and minor mergers or interactions. The star-formation efficiencies of the post-starburst regions in nearly half our galaxies are suppressed while the gas fractions are consistent with star-forming galaxies. AGN feedback may drive this stabilization, and we observe AGN-consistent emission in the centers of 5/13 galaxies. Finally, our central and ring PSBs have similar properties except the ionized and molecular gas in central PSBs is more disturbed. Overall, the molecular gas in our PSBs tends to be compact and highly disturbed, resulting in concentrated gas reservoirs unable to form stars efficiently., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Gas accretion is an important process in the evolution of galaxies, but it has limited direct observational evidences. In this paper, we report the detection of a possible ongoing gas accretion event in a Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy, MaNGA 8313-1901, observed by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies and Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) program. This galaxy has a distinct off-centered blue clump to the northeast (the NE clump) that shows low metallicity and enhanced star-formation. The kinematics of the gas in the NE clump also seems to be detached from the host BCD galaxy. Together with the metallicity drop of the NE clump, it suggests that the NE clump likely has an external origin, such as the gas accretion or galaxy interaction, rather than an internal origin, such as an \hii~complex in the disk. After removing the underlying host component, we find that the spectrum of the "pure" clump can match very well with a modeled spectrum containing a stellar population of the young stars ($\le 7$ Myr) only. This may imply that the galaxy is experiencing an accretion of cold gas, instead of a merger event involving galaxies with significant pre-existing old stars. This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. We have used Galaxy Zoo DECaLS (GZD) to study strong and weak bars in disk galaxies. Out of the 314,000 galaxies in GZD, we created a volume-limited sample (0.01 < z < 0.05, Mr < -18.96) which contains 1,867 galaxies with reliable volunteer bar classifications in the ALFALFA footprint. In keeping with previous Galaxy Zoo surveys (such as GZ2), the morphological classifications from GZD agree well with previous morphological surveys. GZD considers galaxies to either have a strong bar (15.5%), a weak bar (28.1%) or no bar (56.4%), based on volunteer classifications on images obtained from the DECaLS survey. This places GZD in a unique position to assess differences between strong and weak bars. We find that the strong bar fraction is typically higher in quiescent galaxies than in star forming galaxies, while the weak bar fraction is similar. Moreover, we have found that strong bars facilitate the quenching process in star forming galaxies, finding higher fibre SFRs, lower gas masses and shorter depletion timescales in these galaxies compared to unbarred galaxies. However, we also found that any differences between strong and weak bars disappear when controlling for bar length. Based on this, we conclude that weak and strong bars are not fundamentally different phenomena. Instead, we propose that there is a continuum of bar types, which varies from 'weakest' to 'strongest'., Comment: Accepted for publication at MNRAS

We study cool neutral gas traced by NaD absorption in 140 local ($\rm z<0.1)$ early-type ``red geyser'' galaxies. These galaxies show unique signatures in spatially-resolved strong-line emission maps that have been interpreted as large-scale active galactic nuclei driven ionized winds. To investigate the possible fuel source for these winds, we examine the abundance and kinematics of cool gas ($\rm T \sim 100-1000 K$) inferred from Na I D absorption in red geysers and matched control samples drawn from SDSS-IV MaNGA. We find that red geysers host greater amounts of NaD-associated material. Substantial cool gas components are detected in more than $\rm 50 \%$ of red geysers (compared to 25\% of the control sample) going up to 78$\%$ for radio-detected red geysers. Our key result is that cool gas in red geysers is predominantly infalling. Among our 30 radio-detected red geysers, 86$\%$ show receding NaD absorption velocities (with respect to the systemic velocity) between $\rm 40 - 50~km~s^{-1}$. We verify this result by stacking NaD profiles across each sample which confirms the presence of infalling NaD velocities within red geysers ( $\sim\rm 40~km~s^{-1}$) with no velocity offsets detected in the control samples. Interpreting our observations as signatures of inflowing cool neutral clouds, we derive an approximate mass inflow rate of $\rm \dot{M}_{in} \sim 0.1 M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$, similar to that expected from minor merging and internal recycling. Some red geysers show much higher rates ($\rm \dot{M}_{in} \sim 5 M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$) that may indicate an ongoing accretion event., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables. We present the second data release for the HI-MaNGA programme of HI follow-up observations for the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. This release contains measurements for 3669 unique galaxies, combining 2108 Green Bank Telescope observations with an updated crossmatch of the MaNGA sample with the ALFALFA survey. We combine these data with MaNGA spectroscopic measurements to examine relationships between HI-to-stellar mass ratio (M_HI/M_*) and average ISM/star formation properties probed by optical emission lines. M_HI/M_* is very weakly correlated with the equivalent width of Halpha, implying a loose connection between the instantaneous star formation rate and the HI reservoir, although the link between M_HI/M_* and star formation strengthens when averaged even over only moderate timescales (~30 Myrs). Galaxies with elevated HI depletion times have enhanced [OI]/Halpha and depressed Halpha surface brightness, consistent with more HI residing in a diffuse and/or shock heated phase which is less capable of condensing into molecular clouds. Of all optical lines, M_HI/M_* correlates most strongly with oxygen equivalent width, EW(O), which is likely a result of the existing correlation between M_HI/M_* and gas-phase metallicity. Residuals in the M_HI/M_*-EW(O) relation are again correlated with [OI]/Halpha and Halpha surface brightness, suggesting they are also driven by variations in the fraction of diffuse and/or shock-heated gas. We recover the strong anti-correlation between M_HI/M_* and gas-phase metallicity seen in previous studies. H$\alpha$ blobs are off-galaxy emission-line regions with weak or no optical counterparts. They are mostly visible in H$\alpha$ line, appearing as concentrated blobs. Such unusual objects have been rarely observed and studied, and their physical origin is still unclear. We have identified 13 H$\alpha$ blobs in the public data of MaNGA survey, by visually inspecting both the optical images and the spatially resolved maps of H$\alpha$ line for $\sim 4600$ galaxy systems. Among the 13 H$\alpha$ blobs, 2 were reported in previously MaNGA-based studies and 11 are newly discovered. This sample, though still small in size, is by far the largest sample with both deep imaging and integral field spectroscopy. Therefore, for the first time we are able to perform statistical studies to investigate the physical origin of H$\alpha$ blobs. We examine the physical properties of these H$\alpha$ blobs and their associated galaxies, including their morphology, environments, gas-phase metallicity, kinematics of ionized gas, and ionizing sources. We find that the H$\alpha$ blobs in our sample can be broadly divided into two groups. One is associated with interacting/merging galaxy systems, of which the ionization is dominated by shocks or diffuse ionized gas. It is likely that these H$\alpha$ blobs used to be part of their nearby galaxies, but were stripped away at some point due to tidal interactions. The other group is found in gas-rich systems, appearing as low-metallicity star-forming regions that are visually detached from the main galaxy. Gaseous inflows are necessary suppliers of galaxies' star-forming fuel, but are difficult to characterize at the survey scale. We use integral-field spectroscopic measurements of gas-phase metallicity and single-dish radio measurements of total atomic gas mass to estimate the magnitude and frequency of gaseous inflows incident on star-forming galaxies. We reveal a mutual correlation between steep oxygen abundance profiles between $0.25-1.5 R_e$, increased variability of metallicity between $1.25-1.75 R_e$, and elevated HI content at fixed total galaxy stellar mass. Employing a simple but intuitive inflow model, we find that galaxies with total stellar mass less than $10^{10.1} {\rm M_{\odot}}$ have local oxygen abundance profiles consistent with reinvigoration by inflows. Approximately 10-25\% of low-mass galaxies possess signatures of recent accretion, with estimated typical enhancements of approximately 10-90\% in local gas mass surface density. Higher-mass galaxies have limited evidence for such inflows. The large diversity of HI mass implies that inflow-associated gas ought to reside far from the star-forming disk. We therefore propose that a combination of high HI mass, steep metallicity profile between $0.25-1.5 R_e$, and wide metallicity distribution function between $1.25 - 1.75 R_e$ be employed to target possible hosts of inflowing gas for high-resolution radio follow-up.

We measure the environmental dependence, where environment is defined by the distance to the third nearest neighbor, of multiple galaxy properties inside the Environmental COntext (ECO) catalog. We focus primarily on void galaxies, which we define as the $10 \%$ of galaxies having the lowest local density. We compare the properties of void and non-void galaxies: baryonic mass, color, fractional stellar mass growth rate (FSMGR), morphology, and gas-to-stellar-mass ratio (estimated from a combination of HI data and photometric gas fractions calibrated with the RESOLVE survey). Our void galaxies typically have lower baryonic masses than galaxies in denser environments, and they display the properties expected of a lower mass population: they have more late-types, are bluer, have higher FSMGR, and are more gas rich. We control for baryonic mass and investigate the extent to which void galaxies are different at fixed mass. Void galaxies are bluer, more gas-rich, and more star forming at fixed mass than non-void galaxies, which is a possible signature of galaxy assembly bias. Furthermore, we show that these trends persist even at fixed mass and morphology, and we find that voids host a distinct population of early-types that are bluer and more star-forming than the typical red and quenched early-types. In addition to these empirical observational results, we also present theoretical results from mock catalogs with built-in galaxy assembly bias. We show that a simple matching of galaxy properties to (sub)halo properties, such as mass and age, can recover the observed environmental trends in ECO galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. The ALMaQUEST (ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation) survey is a program with spatially-resolved $^{12}$CO(1-0) measurements obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) for 46 galaxies selected from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) DR15 optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The aim of the ALMaQUEST survey is to investigate the dependence of star formation activity on the cold molecular gas content at kpc scales in nearby galaxies. The sample consists of galaxies spanning a wide range in specific star formation rate (sSFR), including starburst (SB), main-sequence (MS), and green valley (GV) galaxies. In this paper, we present the sample selection and characteristics of the ALMA observations, and showcase some of the key results enabled by the combination of spatially-matched stellar populations and gas measurements. Considering the global (aperture-matched) stellar mass, molecular gas mass, and star formation rate of the sample, we find that the sSFR depends on both the star formation efficiency (SFE) and the molecular gas fraction ($f_{\rm H_{2}}$), although the correlation with the latter is slightly weaker. Furthermore, the dependence of sSFR on the molecular gas content (SFE or $f_{\rm H_{2}}$) is stronger than that on either the atomic gas fraction or the molecular-to-atomic gas fraction, albeit with the small HI sample size. On kpc scales, the variations in both SFE and $f_{\rm H_{2}}$ within individual galaxies can be as large as 1-2 dex thereby demonstrating that the availability of spatially-resolved observations is essential to understand the details of both star formation and quenching processes., Comment: 20 pages. Galaxies in dense environments, such as groups and clusters, experience various processes by which galaxies gain and lose gas. Using data from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, we previously reported the discovery of a giant (6 -- 8 kpc in diameter) H$\alpha$ blob, Totoro, about 8 kpc away from a pair of galaxies (Satsuki and Mei) residing in a galaxy group which is experiencing a group-group merger. Here, we combine interferometric $^{12}$CO(1--0) molecular gas data, new wide-field H$\alpha$, $u$-band data, and published X-ray data to determine the origin of the blob. Several scenarios are discussed to account for its multi-wavelength properties, including (1) H$\alpha$ gas being stripped from galaxy Satsuki by ram-pressure; (2) a separated low-surface-brightness galaxy; (3) gas being ejected or ionized by an active galactic nucleus (AGN); and (4) a cooling intra-group medium (IGM). Scenarios (1) and (2) are less favored by the present data. Scenario (3) is also less likely as there is no evidence for an active ongoing AGN in the host galaxy. We find that the CO (cold) and H$\alpha$ (warm) gas coexist with X-ray (hot) structures; moreover, the derived cooling time is within the regime where molecular and H$\alpha$ gas are expected. The coexistence of gas with different temperatures also agrees with that of cooling gas in other systems. Our multi-wavelength results strongly suggest that the CO and H$\alpha$ gas are the product of cooling from the IGM at its current location, i.e., cooling has occurred, and may be ongoing, well outside the host-galaxy core., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We identify and characterize compact dwarf starburst (CDS) galaxies in the RESOLVE survey, a volume-limited census of galaxies in the local universe, to probe whether this population contains any residual ``blue nuggets,'' a class of intensely star-forming compact galaxies first identified at high redshift $z$. Our 50 low-$z$ CDS galaxies are defined by dwarf masses (stellar mass $M_* < 10^{9.5}$ M$_{\odot}$), compact bulged-disk or spheroid-dominated morphologies (using a quantitative criterion, $\mu_\Delta > 8.6$), and specific star formation rates above the defining threshold for high-$z$ blue nuggets ($\log$ SSFR [Gyr$^{-1}] > -0.5$). Across redshifts, blue nuggets exhibit three defining properties: compactness relative to contemporaneous galaxies, abundant cold gas, and formation via compaction in mergers or colliding streams. Those with halo mass below $M_{\rm halo} \sim 10^{11.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ may in theory evade permanent quenching and cyclically refuel until the present day. Selected only for compactness and starburst activity, our CDS galaxies generally have $M_{\rm halo} \lesssim 10^{11.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ and gas-to-stellar mass ratio $\gtrsim$1. Moreover, analysis of archival DECaLS photometry and new 3D spectroscopic observations for CDS galaxies reveals a high rate of photometric and kinematic disturbances suggestive of dwarf mergers. The SSFRs, surface mass densities, and number counts of CDS galaxies are compatible with theoretical and observational expectations for redshift evolution in blue nuggets. We argue that CDS galaxies represent a maximally-starbursting subset of traditional compact dwarf classes such as blue compact dwarfs and blue E/S0s. We conclude that CDS galaxies represent a low-$z$ tail of the blue nugget phenomenon formed via a moderated compaction channel that leaves open the possibility of disk regrowth and evolution into normal disk galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures. Outflows form an integral component in regulating the gas cycling in and out of galaxies, although their impact on the galaxy hosts is still poorly understood. Here we present an analysis of 405 high mass (log M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}\geqslant10$), star-forming galaxies (excluding AGN) with low inclinations at $z\sim$0, using stacking techniques of the NaD $\lambda\lambda$5889,5895 A neutral gas tracer in IFU observations from the MaNGA DR15 survey. We detect outflows in the central regions of 78/405 galaxies and determine their extent and power through the construction of stacked annuli. We find outflows are most powerful in central regions and extend out to $\sim$1R$_{e}$, with declining mass outflow rates and loading factors as a function of radius. The stacking of spaxels over key galaxy quantities reveals outflow detections in regions of high $\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$ ($\gtrsim$0.01 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$) and $\Sigma_{M_{*}}$ ($\gtrsim$10$^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$kpc$^{-2}$) along the resolved main sequence. Clear correlations with $\Sigma_{\text{SFR}}$ suggest it is the main regulator of outflows, with a critical threshold of $\sim$0.01 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$kpc$^{-2}$ needed to escape the weight of the disk and launch them. Furthermore, measurements of the H$\delta$ and D$_{n}$4000 indices reveal virtually identical star formation histories between galaxies with outflows and those without. Finally, through stacking of HI 21 cm observations for a subset of our sample, we find outflow galaxies show reduced HI gas fractions at central velocities compared to their non-detection control counterparts, suggestive of some removal of HI gas, likely in the central regions of the galaxies, but not enough to completely quench the host., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. Since 2016, the HI-MaNGA survey has been obtaining neutral hydrogen (which emits a radio 21cm line) measurements for nearby galaxies which are part of a survey known as "MaNGA". This has been done using observations at the Green Bank Radio Telescope (GBT). We use calibration data obtained routinely at the start of observing runs during this entire period, as well as an extra set of calibration data obtained in 2019 to check the standard GBT data reduction calibrations at L-band (1.4 GHz, or 20cm). We find an constant offset of 20% in the calibration relative to the standard values given in the GBT data reduction pipeline for data of this type. This correction will be used to improve measurements for HI-MaNGA.

This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). We present the HI-MaNGA programme of HI follow-up for the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. MaNGA, which is part of the Fourth phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS-IV), is in the process of obtaining integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy for a sample of ~10,000 nearby galaxies. We give an overview of the HI 21cm radio follow-up observing plans and progress and present data for the first 331 galaxies observed in the 2016 observing season at the Robert C. Bryd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We also provide a cross match of the current MaNGA (DR15) sample with publicly available HI data from the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) survey. The addition of HI data to the MaNGA data set will strengthen the survey's ability to address several of its key science goals that relate to the gas content of galaxies, while also increasing the legacy of this survey for all extragalactic science., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. Twenty years have passed since first light for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we release data taken by the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV) across its first three years of operation (July 2014-July 2017). This is the third data release for SDSS-IV, and the fifteenth from SDSS (Data Release Fifteen; DR15). New data come from MaNGA - we release 4824 datacubes, as well as the first stellar spectra in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), the first set of survey-supported analysis products (e.g. stellar and gas kinematics, emission line, and other maps) from the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP), and a new data visualisation and access tool we call "Marvin". The next data release, DR16, will include new data from both APOGEE-2 and eBOSS; those surveys release no new data here, but we document updates and corrections to their data processing pipelines. The release is cumulative; it also includes the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since first light. In this paper we describe the location and format of the data and tools and cite technical references describing how it was obtained and processed. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has also been updated, providing links to data downloads, tutorials and examples of data use. We study the faint stellar halo of isolated central galaxies, by stacking galaxy images in the HSC survey and accounting for the residual sky background sampled with random points. The surface brightness profiles in HSC $r$-band are measured for a wide range of galaxy stellar masses ($9.2<\log_{10}M_\ast/M_\odot<11.4$) and out to 120 kpc. Failing to account for the stellar halo below the noise level of individual images will lead to underestimates of the total luminosity by $\leq 15\%$. Splitting galaxies according to the concentration parameter of their light distributions, we find that the surface brightness profiles of low concentration galaxies drop faster between 20 and 100 kpc than those of high concentration galaxies. Albeit the large galaxy-to-galaxy scatter, we find a strong self-similarity of the stellar halo profiles. They show unified forms once the projected distance is scaled by the halo virial radius. The colour of galaxies is redder in the centre and bluer outside, with high concentration galaxies having redder and more flattened colour profiles. There are indications of a colour minimum, beyond which the colour of the outer stellar halo turns red again. This colour minimum, however, is very sensitive to the completeness in masking satellite galaxies. We also examine the effect of the extended PSF in the measurement of the stellar halo, which is particularly important for low mass or low concentration galaxies. The PSF-corrected surface brightness profile can be measured down to $\sim$31 $\mathrm{mag}/\mathrm{arcsec}^2$ at 3-$\sigma$ significance. We show how the Radon transform (defined as a series of line integrals through an image at different orientations and offsets from the origin) can be used as a simple, non-parametric tool to characterize galaxy velocity fields, specifically their global kinematic position angles (PA_k) and any radial variation or asymmetry in PA_k. This method is fast and easily automated, making it particularly beneficial in an era where IFU and interferometric surveys are yielding samples of thousands of galaxies. We demonstrate the Radon transform by applying it to gas and stellar velocity fields from the first ~2800 galaxies of the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. We separately classify gas and stellar velocity fields into five categories based on the shape of their radial PA_k profiles. At least half of stellar velocity fields and two-thirds of gas velocity fields are found to show detectable deviations from uniform coplanar circular motion, although most of these variations are symmetric about the center of the galaxy. The behavior of gas and stellar velocity fields is largely independent, even when PA_k profiles for both components are measured over the same radii. We present evidence that one class of symmetric PA_k variations is likely associated with bars and/or oval distortions, while another class is more consistent with warped disks. We study tidal features (TFs) around galaxies in the REsolved Spectroscopy of a Local VolumE (RESOLVE) survey. Our sample consists of 1048 RESOLVE galaxies that overlap with the DECam Legacy Survey, which reaches an r-band 3$\sigma$ depth of $\sim$27.9 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ for a 100 arcsec$^{2}$ feature. Images were masked, smoothed, and inspected for TFs like streams, shells, or tails/arms. We find TFs in 17$^{\pm 2} \%$ of our galaxies, setting a lower limit on the true frequency. The frequency of TFs in the gas-poor (gas-to-stellar mass ratio $<$ 0.1) subsample is lower than in the gas-rich subsample (13$^{\pm 3} \%$ vs. 19$^{\pm 2} \%$). Within the gas-poor subsample, galaxies with TFs have higher stellar and halo masses, $\sim 3\times$ closer distances to nearest neighbors (in the same group), and possibly fewer group members at fixed halo mass than galaxies without TFs, but similar specific star formation rates. These results suggest TFs in gas-poor galaxies are typically streams/shells from dry mergers or satellite disruption. In contrast, the presence of TFs around gas-rich galaxies does not correlate with stellar or halo mass, suggesting these TFs are often tails/arms from resonant interactions. Similar to TFs in gas-poor galaxies, TFs in gas-rich galaxies imply 1.7x closer nearest neighbors in the same group; however, TFs in gas-rich galaxies are associated with diskier morphologies, higher star formation rates, and higher gas content. Regions of disc galaxies with widespread star formation tend to be both gravitationally unstable and self-shielded against ionizing radiation, whereas extended outer discs with little or no star formation tend to be stable and unshielded on average. We explore what drives the transition between these two regimes, specifically whether discs first meet the conditions for self-shielding (parameterized by dust optical depth, $\tau$) or gravitational instability (parameterized by a modified version of Toomre's instability parameters, $Q_{\rm thermal}$, which quantifies the stability of a gas disc that is thermally supported at $T=10^4$ K). We first introduce a new metric formed by the product of these quantities, $Q_{\rm thermal}\tau$, which indicates whether the conditions for disk instability or self-shielding are easier to meet in a given region of a galaxy, and we discuss how $Q_{\rm thermal}\tau$ can be constrained even in the absence of direct gas information. We then analyse a sample of 13 galaxies with resolved gas measurements and find that on average galaxies will reach the threshold for disk instabilities ($Q_{\rm thermal}<1$) before reaching the threshold for self-shielding ($\tau>1$). Using integral field spectroscopic observations of a sample of 236 galaxies from the MaNGA survey, we find that the value of $Q_{\rm thermal}\tau$ in star-forming discs is consistent with similar behavior. These results support a scenario where disc fragmentation and collapse occurs before self-shielding, suggesting that gravitational instabilities are the primary condition for widespread star formation in galaxy discs. We study the role of cold gas in quenching star formation in the green valley by analysing ALMA $^{12}$CO (1-0) observations of three galaxies with resolved optical spectroscopy from the MaNGA survey. We present resolution-matched maps of the star formation rate and molecular gas mass. These data are used to calculate the star formation efficiency (SFE) and gas fraction ($f_{\rm~gas}$) for these galaxies separately in the central `bulge' regions and outer disks. We find that, for the two galaxies whose global specific star formation rate (sSFR) deviates most from the star formation main sequence, the gas fraction in the bulges is significantly lower than that in their disks, supporting an `inside-out' model of galaxy quenching. For the two galaxies where SFE can be reliably determined in the central regions, the bulges and disks share similar SFEs. This suggests that a decline in $f_{\rm~gas}$ is the main driver of lowered sSFR in bulges compared to disks in green valley galaxies. Within the disks, there exist common correlations between the sSFR and SFE and between sSFR and $f_{\rm~gas}$ on kpc scales -- the local SFE or $f_{\rm~gas}$ in the disks declines with local sSFR. Our results support a picture in which the sSFR in bulges is primarily controlled by $f_{\rm~gas}$, whereas both SFE and $f_{\rm~gas}$ play a role in lowering the sSFR in disks. We examine the z = 0 group-integrated stellar and cold baryonic (stars + cold atomic gas) mass functions (group SMF and CBMF) and the baryonic collapse efficiency (group cold baryonic to dark matter halo mass ratio) using the RESOLVE and ECO survey galaxy group catalogs and a galform semi-analytic model (SAM) mock catalog. The group SMF and CBMF fall off more steeply at high masses and rise with a shallower low-mass slope than the theoretical halo mass function (HMF). The transition occurs at group-integrated cold baryonic mass M_coldbary ~ 10^11 Msun. The SAM, however, has significantly fewer groups at the transition mass ~ 10^11 Msun and a steeper low-mass slope than the data, suggesting that feedback is too weak in low-mass halos and conversely too strong near the transition mass. Using literature prescriptions to include hot halo gas and potential unobservable galaxy gas produces a group BMF with slope similar to the HMF even below the transition mass. Its normalization is lower by a factor of ~2, in agreement with estimates of warm-hot gas making up the remaining difference. We compute baryonic collapse efficiency with the halo mass calculated two ways, via halo abundance matching (HAM) and via dynamics (extended all the way to three-galaxy groups using stacking). Using HAM, we find that baryonic collapse efficiencies reach a flat maximum for groups across the halo mass range of M_halo ~ 10^11.4-12 Msun, which we label "nascent groups." Using dynamics, however, we find greater scatter in baryonic collapse efficiencies, likely indicating variation in group hot-to-cold baryon ratios. Similarly, we see higher scatter in baryonic collapse efficiencies in the SAM when using its true groups and their group halo masses as opposed to friends-of-friends groups and HAM masses., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially-resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median redshift of z = 0.03). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between redshifts z = 0.6 and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGN and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5-meter Sloan Foundation Telescope at Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5-meter du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. We report the discovery of a mysterious giant $H_{\alpha}$ blob that is $\sim 8$ kpc away from the main MaNGA target 1-24145, one component of a dry galaxy merger, identified in the first-year SDSS-IV MaNGA data. The size of the $H_{\alpha}$ blob is $\sim$ 3-4 kpc in radius, and the $H_{\alpha}$ distribution is centrally concentrated. However, there is no optical continuum counterpart in deep broadband images reaching $\sim$26.9 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in surface brightness. We estimate that the masses of ionized and cold gases are $3.3 \times 10^{5}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ and $< 1.3 \times 10^{9}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, respectively. The emission-line ratios indicate that the $H_{\alpha}$ blob is photoionized by a combination of massive young stars and AGN. Furthermore, the ionization line ratio decreases from MaNGA 1-24145 to the $H_{\alpha}$ blob, suggesting that the primary ionizing source may come from MaNGA 1-24145, likely a low-activity AGN. Possible explanations of this $H_{\alpha}$ blob include AGN outflow, the gas remnant being tidally or ram-pressure stripped from MaNGA 1-24145, or an extremely low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy. However, the stripping scenario is less favoured according to galaxy merger simulations and the morphology of the $H_{\alpha}$ blob. With the current data, we can not distinguish whether this $H_{\alpha}$ blob is ejected gas due to a past AGN outburst, or a special category of `ultra-diffuse galaxy' (UDG) interacting with MaNGA 1-24145 that further induces the gas inflow to fuel the AGN in MaNGA 1-24145., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, ApJ accepted

We present the HI mass inventory for the RESOLVE survey, a volume-limited, multi-wavelength census of >1500 z=0 galaxies spanning diverse environments and complete in baryonic mass down to dwarfs of 10^9 Msun. This first 21cm data release provides robust detections or strong upper limits (1.4M_HI < 5 to 10% of stellar mass M_stars) for 94% of RESOLVE. We examine global atomic gas-to-stellar mass ratios (G/S) in relation to galaxy environment using several metrics: group dark matter halo mass M_h , central/satellite designation, relative mass density of the cosmic web, and distance to nearest massive group. We find that at fixed M_stars, satellites have decreasing G/S with increasing M_h starting clearly at M_h = 10^12 Msun, suggesting the presence of starvation and/or stripping mechanisms associated with halo gas heating in intermediate-mass groups. The analogous relationship for centrals is uncertain because halo abundance matching builds in relationships between central G/S, stellar mass, and halo mass, which depend on the integrated group property used as a proxy for halo mass (stellar or baryonic mass). On larger scales G/S trends are less sensitive to the abundance matching method. At fixed M_h < 10^12 Msun, the fraction of gas-poor centrals increases with large-scale structure density. In overdense regions, we identify a rare population of gas-poor centrals in low-mass (M_h < 10^11.4 Msun) halos primarily located within 1.5 times the virial radius of more massive (M_h > 10^12 Msun) halos, suggesting that gas stripping and/or starvation may be induced by interactions with larger halos or the surrounding cosmic web. The nature of warm, ionized gas outside of galaxies may illuminate several key galaxy evolutionary processes. A serendipitous observation by the MaNGA survey has revealed a large, asymmetric H$\alpha$ complex with no optical counterpart that extends $\approx8"$ ($\approx6.3$ kpc) beyond the effective radius of a dusty, starbursting galaxy. This H$\alpha$ extension is approximately three times the effective radius of the host galaxy and displays a tail-like morphology. We analyze its gas-phase metallicities, gaseous kinematics, and emission-line ratios, and discuss whether this H$\alpha$ extension could be diffuse ionized gas, a gas accretion event, or something else. We find that this warm, ionized gas structure is most consistent with gas accretion through recycled wind material, which could be an important process that regulates the low-mass end of the galaxy stellar mass function., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 11 pages, 6 figures

The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) began observations in July 2014. It pursues three core programs: APOGEE-2, MaNGA, and eBOSS. In addition, eBOSS contains two major subprograms: TDSS and SPIDERS. This paper describes the first data release from SDSS-IV, Data Release 13 (DR13), which contains new data, reanalysis of existing data sets and, like all SDSS data releases, is inclusive of previously released data. DR13 makes publicly available 1390 spatially resolved integral field unit observations of nearby galaxies from MaNGA, the first data released from this survey. It includes new observations from eBOSS, completing SEQUELS. In addition to targeting galaxies and quasars, SEQUELS also targeted variability-selected objects from TDSS and X-ray selected objects from SPIDERS. DR13 includes new reductions of the SDSS-III BOSS data, improving the spectrophotometric calibration and redshift classification. DR13 releases new reductions of the APOGEE-1 data from SDSS-III, with abundances of elements not previously included and improved stellar parameters for dwarf stars and cooler stars. For the SDSS imaging data, DR13 provides new, more robust and precise photometric calibrations. Several value-added catalogs are being released in tandem with DR13, in particular target catalogs relevant for eBOSS, TDSS, and SPIDERS, and an updated red-clump catalog for APOGEE. This paper describes the location and format of the data now publicly available, as well as providing references to the important technical papers that describe the targeting, observing, and data reduction. In this work, we present galaxy stellar and baryonic (stars plus cold gas) mass functions (SMF and BMF) and their halo mass dependence for two volume-limited data sets. The first, RESOLVE-B, coincides with the Stripe 82 footprint and is extremely complete down to baryonic mass Mbary ~ 10^9.1 Msun, probing the gas-rich dwarf regime below Mbary ~ 10^10 Msun. The second, ECO, covers a ~40 times larger volume (containing RESOLVE-A) and is complete to Mbary ~ 10^9.4 Msun. To construct the SMF and BMF we implement a new "cross-bin sampling" technique with Monte Carlo sampling from the full likelihood distributions of stellar or baryonic mass. Our SMFs exhibit the "plateau" feature starting below Mstar ~ 10^10 Msun that has been described in prior work. However, the BMF fills in this feature and rises as a straight power law below ~10^10 Msun, as gas-dominated galaxies become the majority of the population. Nonetheless, the low-mass slope of the BMF is not as steep as that of the theoretical dark matter halo MF. Moreover, we assign group halo masses by abundance matching, finding that the SMF and BMF separated into four physically motivated halo mass regimes reveal complex structure underlying the simple shape of the overall MFs. In particular, the satellite MFs are depressed below the central galaxy MF "humps" in groups with mass <10^13.5 Msun yet rise steeply in clusters. Our results suggest that satellite destruction and/or stripping are active from the point of nascent group formation. The Smith Cloud is a gaseous high-velocity cloud (HVC) in an advanced state of accretion, only 2.9 kpc below the Galactic plane and due to impact the disk in 27 Myr. It is unique among HVCs in having a known distance (12.4+/-1.3 kpc) and a well-constrained 3D velocity (296 km/s), but its origin has long remained a mystery. Here we present the first absorption-line measurements of its metallicity, using HST/COS UV spectra of three AGN lying behind the Cloud together with Green Bank Telescope 21 cm spectra of the same directions. Using Voigt-profile fitting of the S II 1250, 1253, 1259 triplet together with ionization corrections derived from photoionization modeling, we derive the sulfur abundance in each direction; a weighted average of the three measurements gives [S/H]=-0.28+/-0.14, or 0.53+0.21-0.15 solar metallicity. The finding that the Smith Cloud is metal-enriched lends support to scenarios where it represents recycled Galactic material rather than the remnant of a dwarf galaxy or accreting intergalactic gas. The metallicity and trajectory of the Cloud are both indicative of an origin in the outer disk. However, its large mass and prograde kinematics remain to be fully explained. If the cloud has accreted cooling gas from the corona during its fountain trajectory, as predicted in recent theoretical work, its current mass would be higher than its launch mass, alleviating the mass concern., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We study the relationships between galaxy environments and galaxy properties related to disk (re)growth, considering two highly complete samples that are approximately baryonic mass limited into the high-mass dwarf galaxy regime, the Environmental COntext (ECO) catalog (data release herein) and the B-semester region of the REsolved Spectroscopy Of a Local VolumE (RESOLVE) survey. We quantify galaxy environments using both group identification and smoothed galaxy density field methods. We use by-eye and quantitative morphological classifications plus atomic gas content measurements and estimates. We find that blue early-type (E/S0) galaxies, gas-dominated galaxies, and UV-bright disk host galaxies all become distinctly more common below group halo mass ~10^11.5 Msun, implying that this low group halo mass regime may be a preferred regime for significant disk growth activity. We also find that blue early-type and blue late-type galaxies inhabit environments of similar group halo mass at fixed baryonic mass, consistent with a scenario in which blue early types can regrow late-type disks. In fact, we find that the only significant difference in the typical group halo mass inhabited by different galaxy classes is for satellite galaxies with different colors, where at fixed baryonic mass red early and late types have higher typical group halo masses than blue early and late types. We present custom-processed UV, optical, and near-IR photometry for the RESOLVE survey, a volume-limited census of stellar, gas, and dynamical mass within two subvolumes of the nearby universe (RESOLVE-A and -B), complete down to baryonic mass ~10^9.1-9.3 Msun. In contrast to standard pipeline photometry (e.g., SDSS), our photometry uses optimal background subtraction, avoids suppressing color gradients, and includes systematic errors. With these improvements, we measure brighter magnitudes, larger radii, bluer colors, and a real increase in scatter around the red sequence. Combining stellar masses from our photometry with the RESOLVE-A HI mass census, we create volume-limited calibrations of the photometric gas fractions (PGF) technique, which predicts gas-to-stellar mass ratios (G/S) from galaxy colors and optional additional parameters. We analyze G/S-color residuals vs. potential third parameters, finding that axial ratio is the best independent and physically meaningful third parameter. We define a "modified color" from planar fits to G/S as a function of both color and axial ratio. In the complete galaxy population, upper limits on G/S bias linear and planar fits. We therefore model the entire PGF probability density field, enabling iterative statistical modeling of upper limits and prediction of full G/S probability distributions for individual galaxies, with two-component structure for red colors. Motivated by the idea that a subset of HVCs trace dark matter substructure in the Local Group, we search for signs of star formation in the Smith Cloud, a nearby ~2x10^6 Msun HVC currently falling into the Milky Way. Using GALEX NUV and WISE/2MASS NIR photometry, we apply a series of color and apparent magnitude cuts to isolate candidate O and B stars that are plausibly associated with the Smith Cloud. We find an excess of stars along the line of sight to the cloud, but not at a statistically significant level relative to a control region. The number of stars found in projection on the cloud after removing an estimate of the contamination by the Milky Way implies an average star formation rate surface density of 10^(-4.8 +/- 0.3) Msun yr^(-1) kpc^(-2), assuming the cloud has been forming stars at a constant rate since its first passage through the Milky Way ~70 Myr ago. This value is consistent with the star formation rate expected based on the average gas density of the cloud. We also discuss how the newly discovered star forming galaxy Leo P has very similar properties to the Smith Cloud, but its young stellar population would not have been detected at a statistically significant level using our method. We relate transitions in galaxy structure and gas content to refueling, here defined to include both the external gas accretion and the internal gas processing needed to renew reservoirs for star formation. We analyze two z=0 data sets: a high-quality ~200-galaxy sample (the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, data release herein) and a volume-limited ~3000-galaxy sample with reprocessed archival data. Both reach down to baryonic masses ~10^9Msun and span void-to-cluster environments. Two mass-dependent transitions are evident: (i) below the "gas-richness threshold" scale (V~125km/s), gas-dominated quasi-bulgeless Sd--Im galaxies become numerically dominant, while (ii) above the "bimodality" scale (V~200km/s), gas-starved E/S0s become the norm. Notwithstanding these transitions, galaxy mass (or V as its proxy) is a poor predictor of gas-to-stellar mass ratio M_gas/M_*. Instead, M_gas/M_* correlates well with the ratio of a galaxy's stellar mass formed in the last Gyr to its preexisting stellar mass, such that the two ratios have numerically similar values. This striking correspondence between past-averaged star formation and current gas richness implies routine refueling of star-forming galaxies on Gyr timescales. We argue that this refueling underlies the tight M_gas/M_* vs. color correlations often used to measure "photometric gas fractions." Furthermore, the threshold and bimodality scale transitions reflect mass-dependent demographic shifts between three refueling regimes --- accretion dominated, processing dominated, and quenched. In this picture, gas-dominated dwarfs are explained not by inefficient star formation but by overwhelming gas accretion, which fuels stellar mass doubling in <~1Gyr. To assess how external factors such as local interactions and fresh gas accretion influence the global ISM of galaxies, we analyze the relationship between recent enhancements of central star formation and total molecular-to-atomic (H2/HI) gas ratios, using a broad sample of field galaxies spanning early-to-late type morphologies, stellar masses of 10^(7.2-11.2) Msun, and diverse stages of evolution. We find that galaxies occupy several loci in a "fueling diagram" that plots H2/HI vs. mass-corrected blue-centeredness, a metric tracing the degree to which galaxies have bluer centers than the average galaxy at their stellar mass. Spiral galaxies show a positive correlation between H2/HI and mass-corrected blue-centeredness. When combined with previous results linking mass-corrected blue-centeredness to external perturbations, this correlation suggests a link between local galaxy interactions and molecular gas inflow/replenishment. Intriguingly, E/S0 galaxies show a more complex picture: some follow the same correlation, some are quenched, and a distinct population of blue-sequence E/S0 galaxies (with masses below key transitions in gas richness) defines a separate loop in the fueling diagram. This population appears to be composed of low-mass merger remnants currently in late- or post-starburst states, in which the burst first consumes the H2 while the galaxy center keeps getting bluer, then exhausts the H2, at which point the burst population reddens as it ages. Multiple lines of evidence suggest connected evolutionary sequences in the fueling diagram. In particular, tracking total gas-to-stellar mass ratios within the diagram provides evidence of fresh gas accretion onto low-mass E/S0s emerging from central starbursts. We consider the relationship between molecular-gas and star-formation surface densities in 19 morphologically defined E/S0s with stellar mass <~ 4x10^10 M_sun, paying particular attention to those found on the blue sequence in color vs. stellar mass parameter space, where spiral galaxies typically reside. While some blue-sequence E/S0s must be young major-merger remnants, many low-mass blue-sequence E/S0s appear much less disturbed, and may be experiencing the milder starbursts associated with inner-disk building as spirals (re)grow. For a sample of eight E/S0s (four blue-, two mid-, and two red-sequence) whose CARMA CO(1-0), Spitzer MIPS 24um, and GALEX FUV emission distributions are spatially resolved on a 750pc scale, we find roughly linear relationships between molecular-gas and star-formation surface densities within all galaxies, with power law indices N = 0.6-1.9 (median 1.2). Adding 11 more blue-sequence E/S0s whose CO(1-0) emission is not as well resolved, we find that most of our E/S0s have global 1-8 kpc aperture-averaged molecular-gas surface densities overlapping the range spanned by the disks and centers of spiral galaxies. While many of our E/S0s fall on the same Schmidt-Kennicutt relation as local spirals, ~80% (predominantly on the blue sequence) are offset towards apparently higher molecular-gas star formation efficiency (i.e., shorter molecular gas depletion time). Possible interpretations of the elevated efficiencies include bursty star formation similar to that in local dwarf galaxies, H2 depletion in advanced starbursts, or simply a failure of the CO(1-0) emission to trace all of the molecular gas., Comment: ApJL, accepted, 16 pages with 3 color figures, 2 tables

We calibrate the Baryonic Tully-Fisher (BTF) Relation using a sample of gas dominated galaxies. These determine the absolute scale of the baryonic mass--rotation speed relation independent of the choice of stellar mass estimator. We find a BTF slope of 3.94 +/- 0.07 (random) +/- 0.08 (systematic) and a zero point of 1.79 +/- 0.26 (random) +/- 0.25 (systematic). We apply this relation to estimate the stellar masses of star dominated galaxies. This procedure reproduces the trend of mass-to-light ratio with color predicted by population synthesis models.
