9. Dealing with Multiple Documents on the WWW: The Role of Metacognition in the Formation of Documents Models

Abstract

Drawing on the theory of documents representation (Perfetti et al., Toward a theory of documents representation. In: H. v. Oostendorp & S. R. Goldman (Eds.), "The construction of mental representations during reading." Mahwah, NJ: Erlbaum, 1999), we argue that successfully dealing with multiple documents on the World Wide Web requires readers to form documents models; that is, to form a representation of contents "and" sources. We present a study in which we tested the assumption that the use of metacognitive strategies is crucial to the formation of documents models. A total of 100 participants with little medical knowledge were asked to conduct an Internet research on a medical topic. Participants were randomly assigned to four experimental groups that received different types of metacognitive prompts: participants either received evaluation prompts, monitoring prompts, both types of prompts, or no prompts. A control group took paper-and-pencil notes. Results showed that laypersons receiving evaluation prompts outperformed controls in terms of knowledge about sources and produced more arguments relating to the source of information when justifying credibility judgments. However, laypersons receiving evaluation prompts were not better able to indicate the source of information after Internet research than controls. In addition, laypersons receiving monitoring prompts acquired significantly more knowledge about facts, and performed slightly better on a comprehension test. It is concluded that the results underline the importance of metacognition in dealing with multiple documents.

Título, resumen y palabras clave también en inglés Resumen basado en el de la publicación Se investiga la relación entre el uso de las redes sociales por parte de los adolescentes y su capacidad para identificar, evaluar y hacer uso de las fuentes de información (sourcing). El término sourcing se define como la capacidad del estudiante para discriminar entre enlaces fiables y no fiables basándose en las características de las fuentes, valorar ciertos criterios sobre las fuentes como medio de selección de sus recursos informativos y seleccionar textos fiables basándose en las características de las fuentes. Un total de 146 estudiantes (cuya media de edad es de 14.7 años) completan tres tareas sobre el uso de las fuentes, así como un cuestionario sobre el uso de las redes sociales y una serie de tests de habilidades lingüísticas y de memoria. Título, resumen y palabras clave también en inglés Resumen basado en el de la publicación Se explora el desarrollo de las habilidades de evaluación de las fuentes en cuatro grupos de estudiantes de 10 a 19 años. Se diseñan una serie de tareas basadas en la diferenciación de tres componentes de la evaluación de las fuentes: la identificación de parámetros relacionados con las fuentes, la evaluación de aspectos de las fuentes tales como la competencia o la intención de la fuente mediante instrucciones explícitas y el uso de ciertos aspectos de las fuentes para evaluar la relevancia de un documento respecto a una tarea determinada. Un total de 245 adolescentes de 5º, 7º y 9º (12–13 años, 14–15 años y 16–17 años), así como estudiantes universitarios, completan el cuestionario utilizado. Durante la adolescencia se observa el desarrollo de todo tipo de habilidades relacionadas con la evaluación, algunas de ellas insuficientes para los lectores de mayor edad. Título, resumen y palabras clave también en inglés Resumen basado en el de la publicación La adquisición de información a través de Internet impone nuevas exigencias educativas incluso en la escuela primaria. Los niños necesitan escudriñar las fuentes de información (sourcing) para seleccionar información fiable. Hasta 2018, muy pocos estudios han documentado las aptitudes de los lectores más jóvenes para identificar y evaluar fuentes de información. A través de dos estudios, se recaban evidencias sobre las habilidades de escrutinio de las fuentes de información de los estudiantes de primaria. En el Estudio 1, se investiga hasta qué punto un grupo de estudiantes de cuarto grado son capaces de identificar fuentes de información y evaluar la experiencia y las intenciones de los informadores a través de tareas sencillas, apropiadas para su edad. En el Estudio 2, se analiza si los estudiantes de cuarto grado aplican de manera espontánea sus capacidades de escrutinio sobre las fuentes cuando leen documentos múltiples sencillos.
