Surface waves on Earth's magnetopause have a controlling effect upon global magnetospheric dynamics. Since spacecraft provide sparse in situ observation points, remote sensing these modes using ground-based instruments in the polar regions is desirable. However, many open conceptual questions on the expected signatures remain. Therefore, we provide predictions of key qualitative features expected in auroral, ionospheric, and ground magnetic observations through both magnetohydrodynamic theory and a global coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere simulation of a magnetopause surface eigenmode. These show monochromatic oscillatory field-aligned currents, due to both the surface mode and its non-resonant Alfv\'en coupling, are present throughout the magnetosphere. The currents peak in amplitude at the equatorward edge of the magnetopause boundary layer, not the open-closed boundary as previously thought. They also exhibit slow poleward phase motion rather than being purely evanescent. We suggest the upward field-aligned current perturbations may result in periodic auroral brightenings. In the ionosphere, convection vortices circulate the poleward moving field-aligned current structures. Finally, surface mode signals are predicted in the ground magnetic field, with ionospheric Hall currents rotating perturbations by approximately (but not exactly) 90{\deg} compared to the magnetosphere. Thus typical dayside magnetopause surface modes should be strongest in the East-West ground magnetic field component. Overall, all ground-based signatures of the magnetopause surface mode are predicted to have the same frequency across L-shells, amplitudes that maximise near the magnetopause's equatorward edge, and larger latitudinal scales than for field line resonance. Implications in terms of ionospheric Joule heating and geomagnetically induced currents are discussed.

System-scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves within Earth's magnetosphere are often understood theoretically using box models. While these have been highly instructive in understanding many fundamental features of the various wave modes present, they neglect the complexities of geospace such as the inhomogeneities and curvilinear geometries present. Here we show global MHD simulations of resonant waves impulsively-excited by a solar wind pressure pulse. Although many aspects of the surface, fast magnetosonic (cavity/waveguide), and Alfv\'en modes present agree with the box and axially symmetric dipole models, we find some predictions for large-scale waves are significantly altered in a realistic magnetosphere. The radial ordering of fast mode turning points and Alfv\'en resonant locations may be reversed even with monotonic wave speeds. Additional nodes along field lines that are not present in the displacement/velocity occur in both the perpendicular and compressional components of the magnetic field. Close to the magnetopause the perpendicular oscillations of the magnetic field have the opposite handedness to the velocity. Finally, widely-used detection techniques for standing waves, both across and along the field, can fail to identify their presence. We explain how all these features arise from the MHD equations when accounting for a non-uniform background field and propose modified methods which might be applied to spacecraft observations.

Surface waves process the turbulent disturbances which drive dynamics in many space, astrophysical and laboratory plasma systems, with the outer boundary of Earth's magnetosphere, the magnetopause, providing an accessible environment to study them. Like waves on water, magnetopause surface waves are thought to travel in the direction of the driving solar wind, hence a paradigm in global magnetospheric dynamics of tailward propagation has been well-established. Here we show through multi-spacecraft observations, global simulations, and analytic theory that the lowest-frequency impulsively-excited magnetopause surface waves, with standing structure along the terrestrial magnetic field, propagate against the flow outside the boundary. Across a wide local time range (09-15h) the waves' Poynting flux exactly balances the flow's advective effect, leading to no net energy flux and thus stationary structure across the field also. Further down the equatorial flanks, however, advection dominates hence the waves travel downtail, seeding fluctuations at the resonant frequency which subsequently grow in amplitude via the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and couple to magnetospheric body waves. This global response, contrary to the accepted paradigm, has implications on radiation belt, ionospheric, and auroral dynamics and potential applications to other dynamical systems.

We report on observations of the Earth's bow shock at unprecedentedly large downtail distances, some as remote as 360 R(sub E). Suprisingly, we find that even at these large distances, the bow shock signature remains clear. The cases we report are among the weakest shocks ever clearly identified. These shocks reveal patterns of field changes remarkably similar to those observed for stronger shocks. Indeed, several of the shocks could serve as textbook examples because they occur in unusually quiet and steady solar wind conditions. The quasi- perpendicular shocks are, in some cases preceded by whistler wave trains. Several of the shocks which have normal vectors in the transitional region between quasiperpendicular and quasiparallel are associated with large amplitude wave disturbances in the downstream plasma. Although low Mach number, these shocks are the source of large amplitude turbulence. We show a range of fits to the locations of the shock crossings, and argue that, for steady solar wind conditions, there is no sign of tail flapping. The displacement of the shock from the tail axis appears to be governed by the interplanetary magnetic field orientation as previously reported for Venus.

Data from Galileo's two asteroid flybys reveal magnetic fluctuations that we interpret as perturbations of the solar wind magnetic field caused by an interaction with the nearby asteroid. The scale sizes of the bodies (approximately 14 km for Gaspra and approximately 30 km for Ida) are intermediate between the ion and electron gyroradii, which implies that the asteroid-imposed perturbations propagate in the whistler mode. Special properties of the whistler mode include phase phase velocities that can exceed the solar wind speed and confinement of the disturbance to directions nearly aligned with the magnetic field. These features of the interaction impose a structure on the solar wind disturbance that differs greatly from the forms familiar for either magnetized or unmagnetized bodies of magnetohydrodynamic spatial scales. We examine both data and computer simulations of the interaction with special attention to what can be inferred about the interaction itself from analysis of the data.

As the Galileo spacecraft passed the asteroids Gaspra in 1990 and Ida in 1993, the magnetometer recorded changes in the solar wind magnetic field that we associate with the presence of the nearby body. This paper focuses on the types of interactions that can produce perturbations in the solar wind. We have suggested that the interaction at Gaspra is consistent with expectations of flow diversion by a magnetic dipole moment and an associated 'magnetosphere' whose scale size is much larger than the diameter of the solid body. The conditions for the Ida flyby leave more room for ambiguity. The observations could plausibly be related to either interaction with a magnetized body or with a conducting body. We will report on details of the observations that may enable us to distinguish between the different types of interaction and to provide quantitative estimates of the physical properties of the asteroids themselves.

The rate of occurrence of interplanetary discontinuities (ROID) is examined using Ulysses magnetic field and plasma data from 1 to 5 AU radial distance from the Sun and at high heliographic latitudes. We find two regions where the ROID is high: in stream-stream interaction regions and in Alfven wave trains. This latter feature is particularly obvious at high latitudes when Ulysses enters a high speed stream associated with a polar coronal hole. These streams are characterized by the presence of continuous, large-amplitude (Delta (vector 13)/absolute value of B is about 1-2 Alfven waves and an extraordinarily high ROID value (approximately 150 discontinuities/day). In a number of intervals examined, it is found that (rotational) discontinuities are an integral part of the Alfven waves. The nonlinear Alfven waves are spherically polarized, i.e., the tip of the perturbation vector resides on the surface of a sphere (a consequence of constant absolute value of B). The slowly rotating part of the wave rotates approximately 270 deg in phase. There is a slight arc in the B(sub 1) - B(sub 2) hodogram, suggesting an almost linear polarization. The phase rotation associated with the discontinuity is about 90 deg, lies in the same plane as the slowly rotaing part of the Alfven wave, and therefore completes the 360 deg phase rotation. The best description of the overall Alfven wave plus discontinuity is a spherical, arc-polarized, phase-steepened wave.

The remarkable success with which gas dynamic models characterize the plasma properties in the magnetosheath has to some degree diverted attention from certain inherently magnetohydrodynamic effects that are expected to introduce important modifications. Three recent aspects of magnetosheath observations: a slow mode structure near the subsolar point, flows at speeds in excess of the solar wind speed, and the shape of the internal boundary, i.e., the magnetopause, provide examples of inherently magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects.

This paper reports on a magnetic field phenomenon, hereafter referred to as null fields, which were discovered during the inbound pass of the recent flyby of Jupiter by the Ulysses spacecraft. These null fields which were observed in the outer dayside magnetosphere are characterised by brief but sharp decreases of the field magnitude to values less than 1 nT. The nulls are distinguished from the current sheet signatures characteristic of the middle magnetosphere by the fact that the field does not reverse across the event. A field configuration is suggested that accounts for the observed features of the events.

Observations of the IMF carried out from October 1990 to February 1992 during the in-ecliptic phase of the Ulysses mission are presented. The observations were made between 1 and 5.4 AU during a different phase of the solar cycle from previous missions. The large-scale reorganization of the solar coronal fields following the maximum in Solar Cycle 22 generated numerous transient events, causing large-scale disturbances in interplanetary space, particularly during the first half of 1991. From about the middle of 1991, solar activity apparently decreased, resulting in fewer transient events, allowing the formation of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) recurring in successive solar rotations. Observations of the IMF reflect this temporal evolution in solar activity. However, the average orientation of the IMF, the observed sector structure, and the evolution of the CIRs show that the dynamic interaction of transient events with evolving stream-stream structures in this heliocentric distance range results in significant deviations from the expected IMF topology, even when signature of the transients is less apparent.

Magnetic field structures in the solar wind, characterized by a variation of the field vectors within a plane inclined to the ecliptic ('Planar Magnetic Structures', PMSs), were reported recently (Nakagawa et al., 1989). These PMSs have the property that the plane of variation of the field also contains the nominal Parker spiral direction. An observation of a PMS where the direction of the line of intersection of the plane of field variation with the ecliptic plane makes a large (about 80 deg) angle to the Parker spiral direction is presented. Furthermore, the angular variables of the field (1) vary over a restricted range, and (2) are linearly related. The latter property is related to the former. Currently proposed models for the origin of PMS, inasmuch as they require field configurations which retain strict alignment with the Parker spiral direction from formation to observation, are probably incomplete.

The two Ba releases in the solar wind, termed artificial comets (the first in interplanetary space, the second in the terrestrial magnetosheath), showed a number of common magnetic features. Both times a magnetic cavity was detected and a field pile-up observed with magnitudes several times the ambient field strength upstream of the cavity. The magnetic fluctuations in the compressed region are generally enhanced by a factor comparable to the amount of field pile-up. There is a peak in the spectra of both events around 0.1 Hz in the component which is perpendicular to the solar-wind velocity vector and almost field-aligned. This magnetosonic wave has been interpreted as the fundamental mode of resonance oscillations of the compression zone. For frequencies beyond 2 Hz the spectra decrease more steeply in the case of the second 'comet' than in the first. This is due to the interaction of the supersonic solar wind with the first comet. The spectra obtained during the first comet at the solar-wind/ion-cloud interface are identical to those observed during bow-shock crossings.

Magnetometers aboard the IRM and UKS spacecraft monitored the magnetic field during the AMPTE artificial comet experiment of Dec. 27, 1984. Rapid photoionization of the released barium vapor resulted in the formation of a magnetic cavity, shielded from the ambient magnetic field.The presence of this highly conductive obstacle caused draping and compression of the solar wind magnetic field.

Measurements obtained by ISEE-2 and the UKS spacecraft upstream of the earth's bow shock are examined. Simultaneous observations show that upstream waves are excited over a broad frequency range. Even when peaked spectra occur the peaks can occur at different frequencies in different regions of space. Generally the spectra seen at the two locations are most similar at high frequencies and least similar at low frequencies. The position dependent nature of the upstream waves indicates that comparisons between ground-based measurements and in situ observations must be undertaken with some caution.

Some symposium lectures on the subject of the giant planets and their satellites are summarized. The general topics addressed include: planetary and satellite interiors and surfaces, satellite tori and plumes, aeronomy and dynamics, interaction of magnetospheric plasma with rings and satellites, plasma physics of the outer planets, and dynamics and electrodynamics of rings.
