Over the past few years, there has been a growing interest in renewable energy sources. Among them, photovoltaic (PV) technology is advancing rapidly. Solar insolation is the most crucial factor for PV installations. Various solutions, such as tracking mechanisms, hybrid systems, and new materials, can enhance the efficiency of PV systems. Concentrators focus solar light onto the surface of solar modules, increasing production of electricity. Implementing such solutions can reduce the number of silicon cells in installations, leading to a decrease in waste generated during production. Dye concentrators have a positive impact on the performance of silicon systems. A two-stage study on the effect of dye concentrator application on PV cell efficiency is carried out. In the first stage, specific types of dye concentrators are tested for their interaction with the silicon system. Tinted and luminescent acrylic glass (polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA) in yellow and red are used as dye concentrators. The experiment included multiple measurement calibrations, such as the temperature of the tested silicon cell and the intensity of illuminance. Results showed absolute increase of efficiency in solar cells ranging from 0.05% to 1.42%, depending on the type of concentrator used. The most significant improvements were observed with luminescent red PMMA, averaging at 1.21%. The potential of this concentrator was further explored in the second stage of the study, investigating the relationship between the surface involvement of the silicon cell and the dye concentrator. Test results indicated the potential of dye concentrators for integrating luminescent dye concentrator technology into PV systems. The effect of this integration is increase in the efficiency of the PV cell. On the other hand, it should be noted that replacing the PV cell with a dye concentrator reduces the efficiency of the entire photovoltaic system. Hence, the use of a PV cell and concentrator system is recommended especially for photovoltaic systems with a large area. Increasing global economic development leads to a continuous increase in energy demand, considering the limited conventional resources of energy as well as the impact on the environment associated with its use. The primary disadvantage of solar energy is that it is only accessible during the day. Thermal energy storage systems can overlook this flaw since they can store energy throughout the day for use at night. This paper presents a new cooling technique for low-concentration parabolic collectors with microchannel and Phase Change Material (PCM). A test model consisting of a parabolic concentrator was designed and fabricated to test the parabolic concentrator with and without PCM in Baghdad city during January, March, and July. The solar receiver is an essential component of a solar-powered system and was manufactured from Aluminum metal with 44 microchannels (0.3 m in length, 0.02 m in width, and 0.009 m in height), where the receiver consisted of four rows of microchannels, each row consisting of 11 channels is constructed with velocity and temperature measurement facilities to achieve the experimental results. The results show that the PCM will store the energy roughly three hours after sunset at a flow rate of 0.009339 kg/s. Also, the result indicated that the two-axis tracking system would increase thermal efficiency.

The maximum total thermal efficiency obtained for heating the milk for three days with different radiation intensity, wind speed and ambient temperature tested was 45%, 72.7% and 90%, respectively. The findings indicated that the solar oven could raise the milk temperature to 80℃ within one hour. The maximum attainable performance of this system was 90%.

Solar concentration is the ability to harness solar radiation in order to increase the temperature of a receiver. The receiver is a component into which a heat transfer fluid can flow in an ORC system, which produces electricity, or it can be used for high-temperature thermal storage or even to implement thermochemical cycles. The choice of material is critical to ensure optimal performance and long-lasting operation. It is also essential that such material can operate at high temperatures and high thermal gradients. In short, material identification involves high thermal stresses that result in structural deformation. Different metal alloys were used to verify that the yield strength limit was not exceeded due to thermal stress induced by concentrated solar radiation. Starting with the general heat equation, the problem was implemented in Matlab. The purpose was to test whether thermal stress exceeds the yield strength, which is the condition in which elastic bonds in the material are changed, causing deformation. This condition, if exceeded, is sufficient to discard the material; otherwise, it is a necessary but not sufficient condition to resist over time. The best material identified was Inconel 740H, which had a high yield strength value and the lowest temperature difference. Under extreme working conditions, it withstood induced thermal shocks. Concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems have emerged as a transformative technology that incorporates radiation concentrators into the photovoltaic system to enable radiation to be concentrated onto a receiver—the solar cells. Different concentrator configurations have different impacts on the performance of the solar photovoltaic system. This research work aims to analyze the impact of different concentrators, comparing and identifying the most efficient structures for capturing and concentrating solar energy. Aiming at a deep analysis and comparison among concentrators shapes, this research work presents a unique investigation and revision among different structures such as flat, triangular, LFR, and parabolic concentrators. Moreover, since, in the UV–visible–NIR region, metals’ reflectance varies with the incident wavelength, five metals were considered: aluminum, gold, platinum, copper, and silver. Additionally, the research focuses on studying the effects of parameters critical to the quality of the concentration on the power obtained and on the uniformity of the radiation distribution on the surface of the receiver, as well as on the number of solar rays that reach the receiver. The power on the receiver increases proportionally with the number of reflector concentrators in the system and their reflectance. For parabolic geometries, the optical efficiency is affected by the receiver’s shadow on the concentrator and, in the case of the LFR, by a non-ideal alignment of the reflectors in relation to the receiver. However, in parabolic concentrator geometries, uniformity is usually lower, since in these configurations, the radiation is focused on specific areas of the receiver, usually the central zone.

This study presents a solar-powered parabolic dish desalination system with a solar tracking system and conical receiver. It efficiently transforms solar radiation into heat and evaporates saltwater, producing fresh water. The system is sustainable and affordable, making it a viable solution for water desalination in areas with limited access to fresh water. It achieves a high conversion rate from saltwater to fresh water, while consuming minimal energy. The results indicate that the system effectively utilizes solar energy, exhibiting high efficiency levels ranging from 78.56% to 82.77%, with an average efficiency of 80.79%. This system offers an effective solution to meet the growing demand for fresh water in water-scarce regions.

Aiming at the large carbon emissions of facility agricultural heating in severe cold regions in winter, a compound parabolic concentrator based soil heating system was presented. The system integrated with novel trough compound parabolic concentrator and was used for soil heating in facility agriculture. Following the structure of the compound parabolic concentrator, TracePro software was selected to trace the light in the compound parabolic concentrator. The variation trend of the light escape rate of the compound parabolic concentrator with the different incident angles was analyzed. Based on the calculation results, the performance of the solar collector system was investigated, and the impact of circulating air velocity on the photo-thermal performance of the solar collector system was explored. Research results indicate that when the circulating air velocity is 1.4 m/s and the average ambient temperature is about 28.9 °C, the temperature of the system outlet is up to 90.9 °C. The average instantaneous heat collection, maximum photo-thermal conversion efficiency, and unit area heat collection of the system are 740.6 W, 27.83%, and 0.8 MJ/m², respectively. This study presents a novel approach to fabricating a low-cost solar parabolic dish concentrator with one-meter-long glass/silver mirrors on the reflecting surface. The concentrator's parabola curve is made of four layers of fiberglass needle felt and polyester resin. The parabolic dish surface is mirrored vertically with 2 mm thickness glass/silver mirrors with a width of 5 cm and a length of one meter attached with silicone glue. The system is assembled and tested at the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran. Energy and exergy efficiencies are calculated using cylindrical water heater receiver data. These data are used to calculate the receiver's absorbed energy and losses. Test results show that the major energy loss is due to convection. The average energy efficiency and the maximum exergy efficiency of the concentrator are 57% and 67%, respectively. The maximum power absorbed by the water is 1656.8 W at midday, and the maximum temperature observed on the receiver is 540 °C. Finally, a discussion is held to propose ideas to improve the fabrication process of the designed parabolic dish concentrator. This type of fabrication is suitable for regular thermal applications. Static solar devices have advantages over solar tracking systems. In pure reflective systems, solar reception is limited by the entry angle of the reflector. Many reflective systems are based on mirror Compound Parabolic Concentrators. The solar collection can be improved by placing a lens on top of the reflector. In this work, a static system is proposed, consisting of a mirror funnel concentrator with a prism on top. The system is designed using ray-tracing software and is subsequently built and experimentally evaluated. The system designed for an effective concentration factor of 4× reaches an effective concentration of 3.2× at 11:30 a.m. and has an acceptance angle of 60°. Considering the time interval from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the system harvests 30.7% more energy than the flat surface. If the time interval considered is from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the increase in harvest is ∼77%. The incorporation of the prism represents an increase of ∼6% compared to the bare reflective system. Analytical and empirical models analyze complex and non-linear interactions between the input–output parameters of the system. This is very important in the case of photovoltaic systems to understand their real performance potential. On the other hand, manufacturers of photovoltaic panels rate the maximum performance of the system under fixed lab conditions as per standard testing conditions (STCs) or nominal operating cell temperature (NOCT) standards of IEC. These ratings do not provide the actual production potential of the system in a field with fluctuating conditions of irradiance and temperature. For the case of a concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) system, utilizing multi-junction solar cells (MJCs), there is no commercial tool available to analyze the performance and production, despite some recent empirical models that also require post-processing of experimental data to be used in conventional models. In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based performance model is presented for a multi-junction solar cell, which is not only convenient to apply but can also be easily expanded to predict the real-field performance of the CPV system of any designed size. In addition, the ANN-based model showed a high accuracy of 99.9% in predicting the performance output of MJCs as compared to diode-based empirical models available in the literature. The irradiance concentration at the cell area and the cell temperature are taken as inputs for the neural network. If both of these parameters are known, then the cell efficiency as an output can accurately predict the CPV performance for a field operation.

The continuous growth in energy demand requires researchers to find new solutions to enlarge and diversify the possible ways of exploiting renewable energy sources. Our idea is the development of a solar concentrator based on trapping the luminous radiation with a smart window. This system is able to direct light towards the photovoltaic cells placed on window borders and produce electricity, without any movable part and without changing its transparency. Herein, we report a detailed study of cellulose ethers, a class of materials of natural origin capable of changing their state, from transparent aqueous solution to scattering hydrogel, in response to a temperature change. Cellulose thermotropism can be used to produce a scattering spot in a window filled with the thermotropic fluid to create a new kind of self-tracking solar concentrator. We demonstrate that the properties of the thermotropic fluid can be finely tuned by selecting the cellulose functionalization, the co-dissolved salt, and by regulating their dosage. Lastly, the results of our investigation are tested in a proof-of-concept demonstration of solar concentration achieved by thermotropism-based light trapping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present research aims at promoting the stability and applicability of a hybrid daylighting system combining daylight and artificial light, which eventually enables a constant and pleasant luminous flux of the mixed light delivered by a terminal device installed indoors. That is, the present system allows a constant amount of luminous flux through its terminal device similar to an electric lamp, demonstrating its energy efficiency as well as comfortableness. The system effectively combines two different types of light, as solar rays are collected by a solar tracking sun light collector. The mixed light is transmitted indoors by optical fiber cables all the way to terminal devices installed indoors and discharged as needed. This feature enables the utilization of daylight to its full capacity, promoting solar availability. In this study, the photometry of hybrid lighting was experimentally measured and analyzed by using a spectrometer for different portions of sunlight when maintaining a constant luminous flux of mixed light. The effectiveness of hybrid lighting was explored for a number of cases in actual conditions, and the system was capable of delivering a constant illuminance of 1200 lux on a plane located 1.1 m away from the terminal device (light emitter). The parabolic trough collector provides an extensive range of solar heating and electricity production applications in solar power plants. The receiver tube of the parabolic trough collector has a vital role in enhancing its performance by using different inserts inside it. In the present work, outdoor experimental tests were conducted to study the performance of a small-scale parabolic trough collector equipped with a centrally placed rotating helical shaft. Three cases were studied: a parabolic trough collector without helical shaft insert, a parabolic trough collector with stationary helical shaft insert, and a parabolic trough collector with a rotating helical shaft insert. The experiments are performed for different shaft rotational speeds (4, 11, and 21 RPM) and various flow rates (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 LPM) of water as a heat transfer fluid. The fluid flow and heat transfer parameters (friction factor, Reynolds number, Nusselt number, and thermal enhancement factor) and performance parameters (thermal, overall, and exergetic efficiencies) are studied. The results indicated that the helical shaft insert had increased the required pumping power for the same flow rate. However, the parabolic trough collector thermal performance has enhanced with the shaft rotational speed. For all cases, the parabolic trough collector efficiency increases with the flow rate of the heat transfer fluid, but the percentage enhancement in efficiency decreases. Using a shaft rotational speed of 21 RPM and heat transfer fluid flow rates of 0.5 LPM leads to maximum thermal efficiency enhancement and a maximum friction factor ratio of 46.47% and 7.7 times, respectively, compared to plain tube. A comparison based on the same pumping power (thermal enhancement factor) shows that the maximum enhancement occurs at a flow rate of 1 LPM, and the efficiency enhancement is about 37% at a shaft rotational speed of 21 RPM. Imaging concentrators like the parabolic trough solar concentrators have been widely employed for energy production in solar power plants. The conventional imaging solar concentrators form a non-uniform Gaussian distribution on receiving absorbers yielding the highest temperatures. The traditional CSP system normally truncated a peripheral region of heat flux to better use the central part. CPV/T systems using the waste heat recovery method can largely improve the total efficiency. However, for the CPV module, the coolant temperature was usually below 80 °C, which limited the applications of the thermal cycle such as the ORC system. In this article, a novel trough-type free-form secondary solar concentrator (TFSC) for PV/Thermal hybrid application has been proposed. Different from other CPV/T concepts using a combined PV panel and cooling tunnel/tube, the current concept separates the receiver in two parts. The secondary free-form reflector is generated by the geometric construction method, resulting in uniform heat flux in the edge region and high concentration in the central region. Through the ray tracing method, the optical properties have been verified. Sensitivity analysis of the concentrating structure is also conducted. Solar concentrator collectors have the potential of meeting the medium- and high-temperature thermal energy demands of the world. A heat transfer fluid (HTF) is a vital component of a concentrating system to transfer and store thermal energy. This paper presents the design development of a solar paraboloidal dish concentrator (SPDC) and a study of selected HTFs using the storage receiver system of the concentrator. The locally designed SPDC (diameter 1.21 m and height 0.20 m) has features like light weight, effortless tracking, convenient transportation along with high optical and thermal performance. Three HTFs, silicone oil (SO), engine oil (EO) and ethylene glycol (EG), are selected based on their favorable properties for medium temperature (150–300 °C) applications. The characteristic parameters of HTFs, heating rate (Rh), instant thermal efficiency (ηith) and the overall heat loss coefficient (UL), are illustrated and determined experimentally. A new characteristic parameter, the normalized maximum fluid temperature (Tnf), is also introduced in the paper. In the heating test, the maximum attained temperatures by fluids, SO, EO and EG are found to be 240 °C, 180 °C and 160 °C, respectively. The thermal efficiencies of SO, EO and EG are determined to be 45, 36 and 31%, respectively. The heating rate of 6.56 °C/s is found to be the maximum for SO. Through the cooling test, the overall heat loss coefficient (UL) is computed to be 14 W/mK, which is the least among the three fluids compared. The high thermal performance, environmental safety and chemical stability of silicone oil make it suitable for use in concentrators for medium-temperature heat transfer and storage applications. One of the modern methods for enhancing the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) systems is implementing a solar tracking mechanism in order to redirect PV modules toward the sun throughout the day. However, the use of solar trackers increases the system's electrical consumption, hindering its net generated energy. In this study, a novel self-tracking solar-driven PV system is proposed. The smart solar-driven thermomechanical actuator takes advantage of a solar heat collector (SHC) device, in the form of a parabolic trough solar concentrator (PTC), and smart shape memory alloy (SMA) to produce effective mechanical energy for solar tracking applications from sun rays. Furthermore, a thermal–optical analysis is presented to evaluate the performance of the solar concentrator for the simulated weather condition of Dammam City, Saudi Arabia. The numerical results of the thermal and optical analyses show the promising feasibility of the proposed system in which SMA springs with an activation temperature between 31.09 °C and 45.15 °C can be utilized for the self-tracking operations. The work presented adds to the body of knowledge an advanced SMA-based SHC device for solar-based self-actuation systems, which enables further expansions within modern and advanced solar thermal applications. Solar thermochemical cycling is a promising approach to utilizing solar energy to produce H 2 and CO, which can be further synthesized into liquid fuels via Fischer-Tropsch reactions, making storage and transportation easier. Despite the potential high theoretical efficiency, factors such as the high temperature and low oxygen partial pressure required for the reduction restrict the large-scale application of this technology. In the near-to-medium term, in order to accelerate the popularization and application of this technology, according to Le Chatelier's principle, the assisted reduction of methane can greatly reduce the demand for high-temperature materials and ultra-low oxygen partial pressure. However, the addition of methane will also bring additional challenges, such as carbon emissions and carbon deposition. Reducing the influence of factors such as material sintering and irreversible loss on system efficiency in the experiment will be essential for the development of this technology. This paper focuses on the methane-driven two-step thermochemical cycle hydrogen production process, summarizes its reaction mechanism, thermodynamic analysis, kinetic analysis, oxygen carrier material doping, and experimental research in detail, and comprehensively analyzes the effect of material properties and irreversible loss on the system. According to thermodynamic and kinetic analysis, rational selection and doping of metal oxygen carrier materials can effectively reduce the reaction temperature, improve gas production rates, and enhance structural stability. Analyzing and trying to reduce various irreversible losses of the system, such as reradiation energy loss, conduction energy loss, etc., and taking appropriate heat recovery measures will help to improve the system efficiency of the actual cycle. To effectively eliminate optical end loss for small-scale linear solar concentrators, a fixed linear-focus Fresnel lens solar system (FLFS) with triangle cavity receiver is described and the principle is provided. The effects of the receiver parameters including receiver position f, solar declination angle δ, solar hour angle ω, internal surface absorptivity αaband end plane reflectivity ρron the end loss ratio (μoel) and relative optical efficiency (ηre−opt) of the proposed system have been studied by the control variable method and Monte Carlo ray tracing (MCRT) method which is implemented by software TracePro®. Significance tests of critical factors are conducted to assess the effect of receiver parameters. These results revealed that the FLFS could effectively solve the problem of optical end loss of linear solar concentrators. When f=650mm and δ= 0°, 8°, 16°, and 23°27′, the corresponding average ηre−optat ω from 0° to 60° are 0.9459, 0.9422, 0.9145, and 0.8144, respectively. As δ increases, reducing f can ensure the system operates at a high-efficiency state. The ηre−optshows a positive relationship with αaband no relationship with ρr. δ occupies the greatest significant influence on ηre−opt, which is followed by ω, αaband f.

This paper proposes a Tension Cable-Membrane Concentrator with an ultra-lightweight, practical and low cost alternative construction which is used in the optical-electrical conversion system. The relationship between the varied count triangular facets of the membrane surface and the focal spot radius are studied. Based on Monte Carol ray-tracing method, the optical performances of the concentrator, such as the concentrate ratio, flux distributions and focal spot radiuses etc., are analyzed in different geometry design parameters. Further, a 15 m aperture Tension Cable-Membrane Concentrator is designed, and the form-finding design is studied and verified by ANSYS®. The optical performance comparisons with the original and pre-stressed shape of the reflective film are discussed. Simulation results exhibit that the surface density of the proposed Tension Cable-Membrane Concentrator is only 5% of that of traditional rigid concentrator. It takes on the ultra-lightweight and low-cost that excite designers. The optical performance comparisons show that the peak flux distribution after form-finding over a 0.25 m receiver approximately deliver up to 800 kW/m2 corresponding to the peak concentrate ratio exceeds 1000 suns which are even better than the traditional steel design and completely satisfy design requirements.

In recent years, the technology of waveguide-based planar solar concentrators has been getting more attention in the Concentrated Photovoltaics (CPV) sector due to its compact design and performance versatility and its extended potential applicability from large power plants to built environments, such as Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). Within the last two decades, geometric design-based Planar Light Concentrator (PLC) and diffraction grating-based PLC have been developed with versatile design architectures along with luminescent PLC, which relies primarily on the development of concerned luminescent optical materials. However, congregating and evaluating the technical advancement gained in the field seems challenging due to the segregated state-of-the-art approaches. Hence, this review attempted to organise the present state of waveguide-based PLC in the frame of reference of PLC optics and optical material design. A systematic comparison of optics and optical material design parameters and the merit of the different PLC systems have been explored within this review to serve as a ready reference for its adoption to develop compact planar waveguide-based CPV systems.

The solar flux distribution on the Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC) absorber tube is extremely non-uniform, which causes non-uniform temperature distribution outside the absorber tube. Therefore, it generates high thermal stress which causes creep and fatigue damage. This presents a challenge to the efficiency and reliability of parabolic trough receivers. To override this problem, we have to homogenize the heat flux distribution and enhance the heat transfer in the receiver’s absorber tube to improve the performance of the PTC. In this work, 3D thermal and thermal stress analyses of PTC receiver performance were investigated with a combination of Monte Carlo Ray-Trace (MCRT), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, and thermal stress analysis using the static structural module of ANSYS. At first, we studied the effect of the receiver tube material (aluminium, copper, and stainless steel) on heat transfer. The temperature gradients and the thermal stresses were compared. Second, we studied the effect of the addition of nanoparticles on the working Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF), employing an Al2O3-H2O based nanofluid at various volume concentrations. To improve the thermal performance of the PTC, a nanoparticle volume concentration ratio of 1%–6% is required. The results show that the temperature gradients and thermal stresses of stainless steel are significantly higher than those of aluminium and copper. From the standpoint of thermal stress, copper is recommended as the tube receiver material. Using Al2O3 in water as an HTF increases the average output temperature by 2%, 6%, and 10% under volume concentrations of 0%, 2%, and 6% respectively. The study concluded that the thermal efficiency increases from 3% to 14% for nanoparticle volume fractions ranging from 2% to 6%.

The solar central receiver is the most crucial part of a solar tower power plant (CSP). In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework was used for analysing four circular designs (with same surface area and mass flow rate of heat transfer fluid) of the central tower receiver. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework was developed for analyzing four circular (stain steel) designs of the central tower receiver, namely, a circular constant tube diameter (CCD), a circular vertical constant tube diameter solar receiver (CUTD), a circular variable tube diameter (CVTD) receiver and a leaf type circular solar receiver (LTSR). This analysis studied the solar radiation heat transfer efficiency, temperature distribution, and fluid outlet temperature; pressure and velocity distributions for the designs using CFD. It was found that the LTSR design helped achieve a higher rise in temperature of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) when the mass flow rate was in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 liter per minute. The LSTR model of circular receiver was more efficient in heat transfer circular receiver designs compared with other circular designs for same surface area and strength of solar beam irradiations. At present, the increase in population has caused an increase in the demand for electrical energy, which creates saturation in the national electrical system. In addition to this, the main source of energy for the generation of electricity is fossil fuels, which causes environmental pollution problems due to the increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases. To counteract the negative environmental impact, new energy sources that are friendlier to the environment have been sought, such as solar energy through power generation plants using solar concentrators. In this sense, this research proposes a mathematical optimization model to determine the feasibility of installing electric power generation plants through solar concentrators, to satisfy the energy demand in cities with the highest demand for electric power in the state of Michoacán. The proposed model considers the availability of water resources, the demand for energy, the costs involved for the installation of power generation plants, and the sizing of water collection systems to reduce the consumption of fresh water that is extracted from natural sources. It is a linear integer mixed programming model, where two scenarios are analyzed, considering variation in the operating time of the thermal storage system and the incorporation of the rainwater harvesting system to reduce freshwater consumption. The results show that 237,600 MW can be produced by installing three of the six power generation plants considered and considering a 19 h operation with thermal storage, generating a profit from the sales of the energy produced of 6,326,700 USD/year. Likewise, with the sizing of the rainwater harvesting system, it is possible to collect 1,678 m3 for the operation of the three determined power generation plants.

Static solar devices have advantages over solar tracking systems. In pure reflective systems, solar reception is limited by the entry angle of the reflector. Many reflective systems are based on mirror Compound Parabolic Concentrators. The solar collection can be improved by placing a lens on top of the reflector. In this work, a static system is proposed, consisting of a mirror funnel concentrator with a prism on top. The system is designed using ray-tracing software and is subsequently built and experimentally evaluated. The system designed for an effective concentration factor of 4× reaches an effective concentration of 3.2× at 11:30 a.m. and has an acceptance angle of 60°. Considering the time interval from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the system harvests 30.7% more energy than the flat surface. If the time interval considered is from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the increase in harvest is ∼77%. The incorporation of the prism represents an increase of ∼6% compared to the bare reflective system.

Recently, the cooling market has witnessed a significant growth resulting in a considerable increase in the demand for electricity. Demand peaks during the hottest days and has become a serious problem in terms of power network stability. This can be seen during summer in Poland, where electricity demand over those few days, is greater than compared to winter. In general, the summer peak in electrical demand due to space cooling installations is a common problem in European countries. Fortunately, the high availability of solar energy is correlated with the cooling demands of buildings. A condition that creates an opportunity for the application of solar cooling systems. Thus, solar energy may reduce the consumption of power produced from conventional energy sources and at the same time reduce the peak of electrical energy demand. The available solar thermal collectors with sufficient and insufficient temperature output to drive the solar cooling process are presented. In the case of insufficient temperature output, auxiliary units have been considered. The absorption technology has been reviewed. Some simulation and experimental results of systems presented in literature are discussed in the paper. Finally, an example simulation of a hybrid solar system of heat generation, including flat plate collectors, a solar concentrator and an absorption chiller, is presented.

A multi-surface solar concentrator is proposed in this study. The concentrator is designed by improving the light receiving rate of a parabola when the incident angle changes within 0°~20° by adding involute, shifting the involute up, and changing the shape of the parabolic top. The results show that adding involute can effectively avoid light escaping from the bottom, which improves the light receiving rate under large incident angle. The light receiving rate is improved by increasing the height of involute at incident angle of about 5°~15°. Changing the shape of the top of parabola apparently improves the light receiving rate under high incident angle. Finally, the concentrator was tested experimentally. The experimental efficiency of the concentrator at different incident angles was 0.426. The average light receiving rate of 0.868 was achieved through the optical simulation where different losses include the optical loss, such as the absorption and reflection of the glass cover, the absorption of reflectors, the heat loss, etc. Thus, the concentrator provides a stable and efficient energy source.

Solar concentrator always plays an important role in solar energy collection as it could enhance the energy density effectively. Various structures of solar concentrators have been researched in recent years, among which multi-surface (MS) and multi-element (ME) combinations are the two typical structures. MS concentrator is an improved structure for single surface concentrator. It is usually designed to increase the acceptance angle, enhance the light intercepting efficiency, homogenize the energy distribution, etc. ME concentrator is generally consist of two or more optical elements, in which MS concentrators are usually used as assistant optical components. ME concentrator always has larger tolerance on tracking error so that it is much easier to track the sun. It could be applied in high power concentration. The combination on optical elements of MS and ME solar concentrators was diagramed and theirs advantages and disadvantages were evaluated. Nowadays, solar applications are becoming more and more diverse and concomitantly, the researching methods are also improving. The computer-aided methods including numerical computation and optical simulation are the dominant method in nowadays, which makes it easier to analyze various structures of solar concentrators and their complex applications. Besides, solar applications are not limited in CT and CPV, but in many other fields such as solar daylighting, solar-pumped laser, solar cooling, solar desalination etc. It has been believed that more and more innovative designs on solar concentrator will be proposed in the future.

The present research aims at promoting the stability and applicability of a hybrid daylighting system combining daylight and artificial light, which eventually enables a constant and pleasant luminous flux of the mixed light delivered by a terminal device installed indoors. That is, the present system allows a constant amount of luminous flux through its terminal device similar to an electric lamp, demonstrating its energy efficiency as well as comfortableness. The system effectively combines two different types of light, as solar rays are collected by a solar tracking sun light collector. The mixed light is transmitted indoors by optical fiber cables all the way to terminal devices installed indoors and discharged as needed. This feature enables the utilization of daylight to its full capacity, promoting solar availability. In this study, the photometry of hybrid lighting was experimentally measured and analyzed by using a spectrometer for different portions of sunlight when maintaining a constant luminous flux of mixed light. The effectiveness of hybrid lighting was explored for a number of cases in actual conditions, and the system was capable of delivering a constant illuminance of 1200 lux on a plane located 1.1 m away from the terminal device (light emitter). Finally, the system was installed in a test cell to verify its effectiveness for indoor illumination.

Imaging concentrators like the parabolic trough solar concentrators have been widely employed for energy production in solar power plants. The conventional imaging solar concentrators form a non-uniform Gaussian distribution on receiving absorbers yielding the highest temperatures. The traditional CSP system normally truncated a peripheral region of heat flux to better use the central part. CPV/T systems using the waste heat recovery method can largely improve the total efficiency. However, for the CPV module, the coolant temperature was usually below 80 °C, which limited the applications of the thermal cycle such as the ORC system. In this article, a novel trough-type free-form secondary solar concentrator (TFSC) for PV/Thermal hybrid application has been proposed. Different from other CPV/T concepts using a combined PV panel and cooling tunnel/tube, the current concept separates the receiver in two parts. The secondary free-form reflector is generated by the geometric construction method, resulting in uniform heat flux in the edge region and high concentration in the central region. Through the ray tracing method, the optical properties have been verified. Sensitivity analysis of the concentrating structure is also conducted. The results provide supports for the design and applications of novel CPV/T systems.

Solar concentrator collectors have the potential of meeting the medium- and high-temperature thermal energy demands of the world. A heat transfer fluid (HTF) is a vital component of a concentrating system to transfer and store thermal energy. This paper presents the design development of a solar paraboloidal dish concentrator (SPDC) and a study of selected HTFs using the storage receiver system of the concentrator. The locally designed SPDC (diameter 1.21 m and height 0.20 m) has features like light weight, effortless tracking, convenient transportation along with high optical and thermal performance. Three HTFs, silicone oil (SO), engine oil (EO) and ethylene glycol (EG), are selected based on their favorable properties for medium temperature (150–300 °C) applications. The characteristic parameters of HTFs, heating rate (Rh), instant thermal efficiency (ηith) and the overall heat loss coefficient (UL), are illustrated and determined experimentally. A new characteristic parameter, the normalized maximum fluid temperature (Tnf), is also introduced in the paper. In the heating test, the maximum attained temperatures by fluids, SO, EO and EG are found to be 240 °C, 180 °C and 160 °C, respectively. The thermal efficiencies of SO, EO and EG are determined to be 45, 36 and 31%, respectively. The heating rate of 6.56 °C/s is found to be the maximum for SO. Through the cooling test, the overall heat loss coefficient (UL) is computed to be 14 W/mK, which is the least among the three fluids compared. The high thermal performance, environmental safety and chemical stability of silicone oil make it suitable for use in concentrators for medium-temperature heat transfer and storage applications.

Solar-driven CO 2 /H 2 O splitting via a two-step solar thermochemical cycle is a promising approach for fuel production and carbon neutrality to address the intermittent instability and low energy density of solar energy while taking advantage of its clean and nonpolluting nature. However, current experimental efficiencies are still below theoretical levels due to various limitations such as material properties and energy loss occurring in the reactor. The reactor, as an important component for commercialization, still faces various challenges including high reaction temperature, limited reactor material longevity, high temperature sealing of moving parts, and slow adsorption and desorption rate of porous structure lining. This paper reviews researches on solar thermochemical oxygen carriers and related reactors, with particular focus on analyzing reactor design criteria, modeling methods, energy efficiency and energy loss analysis. In addition, obtaining low partial pressure oxygen for reduction reactions, heat recovery methods, and synergies between the reactor and solar concentrating system play a significant role in further improving energy efficiency. This work demonstrates the feasibility of two-step solar thermochemical cycles in renewable energy technologies and provides guidance for future innovations in this field. Fruits and vegetables are an integral part of the human diet. Many developing countries such as Tanzania experience post-harvest losses of 40%, and there is little ability to preserve and store foods for off-season consumption due to expensive or unreliable energy and a lack of access to refrigeration. Alternatively, fruits and vegetables can be dehydrated using solar crop dryers. Because many developing countries are in tropical regions, properly dehydrating fruits and vegetables to moisture levels appropriate for storage and off-season consumption can be difficult. In an attempt to overcome the challenges of the high humidity, intermittent clouds, and haze often present in tropical climates, this paper investigates the effectiveness of adding a concave solar concentrator built from low-cost, locally available materials to a typical Tanzanian solar crop dryer. Two identical solar crop dryers were constructed, with one serving as the control and the other for testing the solar concentrator. Drying trials using Roma tomatoes with initial moisture content of approximately 90% were conducted in Davis, California (38° 32' 42″ N/121° 44' 21″ W) in various climatic conditions throughout the summer and fall. Tomatoes were considered dried at 10% moisture content. Temperature, relative humidity, and solar radiation were measured outside as well as within each of the dryers to determine how the addition of a solar concentrator can affect the drying rate of tomatoes in solar crop dryers. The concentrator proved to be effective, reducing drying time by 21% in addition to increasing internal dryer temperature and reducing relative humidity. An additional study on the quality of the fresh and dried tomatoes found that the pH, titratable acidity, color, Brix, lycopene, and vitamin C determined there was no significant difference in quality between tomatoes dried with and without the concentrator. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Solar energy is one of the most promising types of renewable energy. Flat facet solar concentrators were proposed to decrease the cost of materials needed for production. They used small flat mirrors for approximation of parabolic dish surface. The first prototype of flat facet solar concentrators was made in Australia in 1982. Later various prototypes of flat facet solar concentrators were proposed. It was shown that the cost of materials for these prototypes is much lower than the material cost of conventional parabolic dish solar concentrators. To obtain the overall low cost of flat facet concentrators it is necessary to develop fully automated technology of manufacturing and assembling processes. Unfortunately, the design of known flat facet concentrators is too complex for automation process. At present we develop the automatic manufacturing and assembling system for flat facet solar concentrators. For this purpose, we propose the design of flat facet solar concentrator that is convenient for automatization. We describe this design in the paper. At present, almost all solar-energy plants in the world occupy specific areas that are not used for agricultural production. This leads to a competition between the solar-energy plants and agriculture production systems. To avoid this competition, it is possible to co-locate solar-energy devices in agricultural fields. The energy obtained via such co-location can be used for agricultural needs (e.g., water extraction for irrigation) and other purposes (e.g., sent to an electrical grid). In this study, we also describe the results of an investigation on co-location methods for the minimal loss of agricultural harvest too.

We have proposed a fruitful design principle targeting a concentration ratio (CR) >1000× for a typical high concentrating photovoltaics (HCPV) system, on account of a two-concentrator system + homogenizer. The principle of a primary dual-lens concentrator unit, completely analogous basic optics seen in the superposition compound eyes, is a trend not hitherto reported for solar concentrators to our knowledge. Such a concentrator unit, consisting of two aspherical lenses, can be applied to minify the sunlight and reveal useful effects. We underline that, at this stage, the CR can be attained by two orders of magnitude simply by varying the radius ratio of such two lenses known from the optics side. The output beam is spatially minimized and nearly parallel, exactly as occurs in the superposition compound eye. In our scheme, thanks to such an array of dual-lens design, a sequence of equidistant focal points is formed. The secondary concentrator consists of a multi-reflective channel, which can collect all concentrated beams from the primary concentrator to a small area where a solar cell is placed. The secondary concentrator is located right underneath the primary concentrator. The optical characteristics are substantiated by optical simulations that confirm the applicability of thousands-fold gain in CR value, ~1100×. This, however, also reduced the uniformity of the illumination area. To regain the uniformity, we devise a fully new homogenizer, hinging on the scattering principle. A calculated optical efficiency for the entire system is ~75%. Experimentally, a prototype of such a dual-lens concentrator is implemented to evaluate the converging features. As a final note, we mention that the approach may be extended to implement an even higher CR, be it simply by taking an extra concentrator unit. With simple design of the concentrator part, which may allow the fabrication process by modeling method and large acceptant angle (0.6°), we assess its large potential as part of a general strategy to implement a highly efficient CPV system, with minimal critical elaboration steps and large flexibility.

Although sunlight is a promising renewable energy source, the light is incoherent and difficult to use directly. Therefore, a solar-pumped laser, which directly converts sunlight into coherent laser light of, is a promising technology. A solar-pumped laser collects sunlight into the laser medium to realize laser oscillation. In order to realize an efficient solar-pumped laser system, it is necessary to design a pumping cavity that absorbs maximal sunlight into the laser medium with minimal thermal shock. In this research, the pumping cavity shape was studied using a numerical ray tracing simulation. As a result, it was found that a cone shaped pumping cavity can be expected to improve the absorption rate by approximately 30% over a cylindrically shaped pumping cavity. Furthermore, the absorption power density distribution can be flattened by a vase shaped pumping cavity, while maintaining the same absorption efficiency. The vase shaped pumping cavity has almost half the dispersion of the absorbed power density in the laser medium when compared with the cone shaped pumping cavity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar-pumped lasers (SPLs) allow direct solar-to-laser power conversion, and hence, provide an opportunity to harness a renewable energy source. Herein, we report significant improvements in end-side-pumped solar laser collection efficiency and beam brightness using a novel 1.5-m-diameter compound solar concentrator combining a Fresnel lens and modified parabolic mirror. A key component of this scheme is the off-axis-focused parabolic mirror. An original dual-parabolic pump cavity is another feature. To determine the dependence of the SPL performance on the distance between the focus and central axis of the modified parabolic mirror, several systems with different distances were optimized using TracePro and ASLD software. It was numerically calculated that end-side pumping a 5-mm-diameter, 22-mm-long Nd:YAG crystal rod would generate 74.6 W of continuous-wave solar laser power at a collection efficiency of 42.2 W/m2, i.e., 1.1 times greater than the previous record value. Considering the laser beam quality, a brightness figure of 0.063 W was obtained, which is higher than that of other multimode SPL designs with end-side pumping. Thus, our SPL concentrator offers the possibility of achieving a beam quality as high as that obtainable via side pumping, alongside highly efficient energy conversion, which is characteristic to end-side pumping.

Active building envelopes that act as energy converters—gathering on-site available renewable energy and converting it to thermal energy or electricity—is a promising technological design niche to reduce energy consumption in the building sector, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and thus tackle climate change challenges. This research adds scientific knowledge in the field of composite building envelope structures containing phase-change materials for thermal energy storage. In this study, the focus lies on the cooling phase of the diurnal gain and release of solar energy. The experimental setup imitates day and night environment. Six alterations of small-scale solar facade modules are tested in two different configurations—with and without the adjustable insulation layer on their outer surface during the discharging phase. Modules explore combinations of aerogel, air gap, and Fresnel lenses for solar energy concentration. The results allow us to compare the impact of the application of an additional insulation layer at “night” for different designs of solar facade modules. The results show that modules with an air gap provide higher heat gains but do not take full advantage of the latent heat capacity of phase-change materials.

Indonesia has been blessed with excellent solar heat distribution, which can be used as renewable energy to heat water. Various technologies have been developed to utilize these inexhaustible thermodynamic resources, in the form of photons arrays, converted into concentrated heat for daily use, i.e., solar water heater. This renewable-based water heating system can provide significant energy efficiency, benefit the environment, and reduce energy use costs. This experimental study attempts to harvest the energy from the sun using a cylindrical through collector (CTC) type solar concentrator. The CTC was made of the solar reflective film (SRF) affixed to concentrator collector surfaces which was then mounted on an adjustable angle frame of the concentrator collector support. The heat generated from the concentrator was stored in water, and phase change material is embedded in the system to retain the heat longer. The research was carried out in Langsa City, Aceh, Indonesia. The results showed that water heaters using CTC systems could produce 16 L of hot water retained at 40–60 °C for four hours. With the addition of beeswax, the water temperature of the same capacity can be maintained at 40–60 °C for around 5 h. This technology demonstrated an excellent result that produces as much as 60 L of water per day, increasing solar thermal energy efficiency. This technology presented a great potential for replication or even for further development on an industrial scale.

The mirror unit installation error of the solar parabolic dish concentrator can adversely affect its optical performance causing optical intercept losses and hot spots on the absorber surface, which in turn affect safety. Thus, minimizing mirror installation error is considered very important. In this paper, a new method for the facet installation measurement and facet alignment of the mirror unit in the dish concentrator is presented. Firstly, a "clean" facet installation error measurement method using photogrammetry is presented. The photogrammetry measures the spatial coordinates of three feature points to reverse the mirror facet alignment error parameters. Next, two novel methods, a three-rotation alignment method and two-rotation alignment method for aligning the mirror facet are presented and corresponding mathematical models. The advantage of these alignment methods is that the adjustment value and order for each support bolt can be determined before the mirror facet is aligned, which could provide quantitative adjustment information to operator and avoid repeated adjustments. Finally, validity of the installation measurement and facet alignment method was verified by a numerical simulation and an experiment using a metal facet alignment. The presented methods do not rely on the geometry of the reflector mirror and could therefore have extensive uses in applications such solar tower and trough concentrator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Greenhouses provide a suitable environment in which all the parameters required for growing the plants can be controlled throughout the year. Greenhouse heating is one of the most important issues in productivity of a greenhouse. In many countries, heating costs in the greenhouses are very high, having almost 60-80% of the total production costs. In recent years, several studies have attempted to reduce the heating costs of the greenhouses by applying more energy efficient equipment and using the renewable energy sources as alternatives or supplementary to the fossil fuels. In the present study a novel solar greenhouse heating system equipped with a parabolic trough solar concentrator (PTC) and a flat-plate solar collector has been developed. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the proposed heating system at different working conditions. Materials and Methods The presented solar greenhouse heating system was comprised of a parabolic trough solar concentrator (PTC), a heat storage tank, a pump and a flat plate solar collector. The PTC was constructed from a polished stainless steel sheet (as the reflector) and a vacuum tube receiver. The PTC was connected to the tank by using insulated tubes and a water pump was utilized to circulate the working fluid trough the PTC and the heat exchanger installed between walls of the tank. The uncovered solar collector was located inside the greenhouse. During the sunshine time, a fraction of the total solar radiation received inside the greenhouse is absorbed by the solar collector. This rises the temperature of the working fluid inside the collector which led to density reduction and natural flow of the fluid. In other words, the collector works as a natural flow flat plate solar collector during the sunshine time. At night, when the greenhouse temperature is lower than tank temperature, the fluid flows in a reverse direction through the solar collector and the stored heat transferred from the collector surface to the greenhouse. The evaluation tests were conducted at three levels of fluid flow rate through the solar concentrator (0.44, 0.75 and 1.5 Lmin-1) and two different working modes of the heat exchanger. Results and Discussion The variation of thermal efficiency of the PTC at different flow rates has been illustrated in Fig 3. As shown, thermal efficiency increased with flow rate mainly because the fluid convection coefficient enhances with raising the velocity of the fluid inside the tubes. The heat storing process began from 9 am and the highest amounts of the stored heat during sunshine time occurred between 10 am and 2 pm. Fig 5 showed that the stored energy in the tank enhanced when the flat plate collector was employed beside the PTC. Also, increasing the fluid flow rate from 0.44 to 1.5 Lmin-1 improved the index of stored heat by 32.14%. Energy consumption during the night time was also significantly changed with flow rate and the mode of heating. Fig 7 indicated that the electrical energy consumption was lower with flat plate solar collector and it is possible to save the electrical energy by 26.67% using the flat plate collector. Bouadila et al., (2014) concluded that the electrical energy consumption reduced by 31% employing a natural convection flat plate solar collector system equipped with phase changed heat storage material for greenhouse heating. Since increasing the flow rate enhanced the thermal efficiency of the solar concentrator system and led to an improvement in stored thermal energy during the sunshine time, solar fraction increased with raising the flow rate from 0.44 to 1.5 Lmin-1. A maximum solar fraction of 66% was achieved at the highest flow rate when using the flat plate solar collector beside the PTC. Conclusions An experimental comparative study was conducted to investigate the performance of a novel solar greenhouse heating system at the different fluid flow rates and two modes of heating (with and without flat plat solar collector). The results can be summarized as follows: A maximum thermal efficiency of about 71% was achieved at the flow rate of 1.5 Lmin-1. Raising the flow rate from 0.44 to 1.5 Lmin-1 improved the index of stored heat and solar fraction by 32.14% and 21%, respectively. The highest value of solar fraction was found to be 66% at the highest flow rate when engaging the flat plate solar collector beside the PTC.

The significance of this work lies in the development of a novel code-based, detailed, and deterministic geometrical approach that couples the optimization of the Fresnel lens primary optical element (POE) and the dome-shaped secondary optical element (SOE). The objective was to maximize the concentration acceptance product (CAP), while using the minimum SOE and receiver geometry at a given f-number and incidence angle (also referred to as the tracking error angle). The laws of polychromatic light refraction along with trigonometry and spherical geometry were utilized to optimize the POE grooves, SOE radius, receiver size, and SOE–receiver spacing. Two literature case studies were analyzed to verify this work's optimization, both with a spot Fresnel lens POE and a spherical dome SOE. Case 1 had a 625 cm2 POE at an f-number of 1.5, and Case 2 had a 314.2 cm2 POE at an f-number of 1.34. The equivalent POE designed by this work, with optimized SOE radiuses of 13.6 and 11.4 mm, respectively, enhanced the CAP value of Case 1 by 52% to 0.426 and that of Case 2 by 32.4% to 0.45. The SOE's analytical optimization of Case 1 was checked by a simulated comparative analysis to ensure the validity of the results. Fine-tuning this design for thermal applications and concentrated photovoltaics is also discussed in this paper.
