This study focusses on investigating the effect of flow orientation on global and local two-phase flow parameters under two-phase flow conditions. Flow visualization, pressure measurement, and conductivity probe measurements are performed in a test facility made of 50.8 mm inner diameter acrylic pipes with flow visualization, pressure measurement, and conductivity probe measurement. Characteristics of flow regimes and interfacial structures, and frictional pressure drop prediction in the vertical upward and vertical downward two-phase flows are compared and analyzed. The results show that unique coring phenomenon and slug bubbles with off-centered noses appear in the vertical downward flow. The flow regime transition boundaries shift to the lower gas superficial velocities in the vertical downward flow compared to that in the vertical upward flow. Furthermore, the distribution and one-dimensional transport of the void fraction, interfacial area concentration, bubble velocity, bubble Sauter-mean diameter, and bubble frequency are acquired and compared to study the effect of flow orientation on interfacial structures. The interfacial structure and its development are found to be mainly affected by the lift force and the turbulence related bubble interactions. The frictional pressure drop is acquired and modeled by the Lockhart–Martinelli correlation. The frictional pressure drop is found to be larger in the vertical upward flow than that in the vertical downward flow. The recommended C value for both vertical upward and vertical downward flows are proposed.

This paper presents a non-inverting buck–boost converter for high-voltage automotive applications. The converter includes a newly proposed controller chip and four off-chip NMOS power transistors with two bootstrap capacitors. Conventional non-inverting buck–boost converters have two operation modes: the buck and boost modes. This study implements four operation modes for smooth transition between these modes. In converters with four operation modes, non-switching high-side power transistors require continuous high gate-driving voltages without the bootstrapping operation. The designed non-inverting buck–boost converter drives non-switching high-side NMOS transistors through the proposed bootstrap-sharing technique. A new current sensing technique is also proposed that works reliably under high-voltage operating conditions. This current sensing enables the converter’s modulation scheme of the current programmed control. The proposed converter was fabricated using a $0.18~\mu \text{m}$ BCD 1P4M process. The total chip area is $2.50\times 2.50\,\,mm^{2}$ , including the bonding pads. The output voltage range is from 1.05 to 60 V, with a typical input automotive battery voltage of 14 V. Because the automotive battery exhibit a wide voltage fluctuation, the input voltage range is designed from 7 to 60 V. Its switching frequency range is from 600 to 1000 kHz and the maximum power efficiency is 96.1% at a load current of 1.5 A.

The current work develops a robust image analysis technique for quantitative measurements in horizontal plug flow. To do this, experiments are performed to capture high-speed videos for horizontal air-water plug flow for two test conditions in a 38.1 mm ID pipe. A visualization block-mirror system is designed and fabricated to allow the simultaneous visualization of two-phase flow from both top and side views using a single camera. To obtain images of high quality for analysis, the angle and position of the camera relative to the visualization block are verified. With the obtained images, an algorithm is developed to detect and track the interface of plug bubbles. Due to the existence of contacting or overlapping small bubbles, additional algorithms are developed to segment the interfaces of plug bubble from those of small bubbles, including distance checking, interface breakpoints detection, and convex curvature segmentation. As a result, the nose position, local time-averaged axial velocity, and area-averaged time-averaged void fraction for plug bubbles can be obtained with this newly developed image analysis technique. To benchmark the newly developed image analysis code, local four-sensor conductivity probe measurements are performed. The axial velocity for plug bubbles generally agrees within ±10% between image analysis technique and the four-sensor conductivity probe measurement technique, while the plug bubble reconstruction approach can generate an area-averaged void fraction within ±10% of the probe measured value.

Cold atom quantum sensors based on atom interferometry are among the most accurate instruments used in fundamental physics, metrology, and foreseen for autonomous inertial navigation. However, they typically have optically complex, cumbersome, and low-bandwidth atom detection systems, limiting their practical applications. Here, we demonstrate an enabling technology for high-bandwidth, compact, and nondestructive detection of cold atoms, using microwave radiation. We measure the reflected microwave signal to coherently and distinctly detect the population of single quantum states with a bandwidth close to 30 kHz and a design destructivity that we set to 0.04%. We use a horn antenna and free-falling molasses cooled atoms in order to demonstrate the feasibility of this technique in conventional cold atom interferometers. This technology, combined with coplanar waveguides used as microwave sources, provides a basic design building block for detection in future atom chip-based compact quantum inertial sensors. The use of cold atom interferometry for applications in metrology and accurate instrumentation is hampered by optically cumbersome atom detection systems. The authors present a non-destructive microwave detection method for the quantum states of cold atoms that overcomes the need for complex optical systems and experimental set ups, making it a more portable solution for quantum and inertial sensing.

The present study investigates the two-phase flow pressure drop across 90° vertical elbows. The elbows, positioned in the vertical-upward to horizontal and horizontal to vertical-downward orientations, have an inner diameter of 50.8 mm and a radius of curvature of 152.4 mm. Experiments were performed in a wide range of flow conditions at different axial locations and flow orientations to measure the local gauge pressure and void fraction. It is observed that increasing the liquid-phase or gas-phase velocity increases the local gauge pressure. The experimental data are used to study the elbow orientation effect on pressure drop and develop predictive method for two-phase flow pressure drop across 90° vertical elbows. The pressure components due to friction and geometry effects (form loss), gravity and acceleration or deceleration of the two phases are estimated accurately with the detailed experimental data. Then, predictive methods for each pressure components are investigated. For estimation of the pressure component due to friction and geometry effects, six models are evaluated, and the model coefficients are determined from the experimental data. The evaluation results show that the modified Kim et al. correlation and Bowden and Yang correlation can predict pressure drops across both vertical elbows through adjusting the parameter C and the newly introduced minor loss factor. Both models demonstrate negligible dependence on flow regimes. However, the Kim et al. correlation gives closer prediction to the experimental data than the Bowden and Yang correlation, and thus is recommended for prediction of the pressure component due to friction and geometry effects. The other models need further modification to predict the two-phase flow pressure drop across elbows.

The current work seeks to perform the one-dimensional drift-flux analysis for horizontal gas-dispersed flow, to provide closure models for void fraction and to investigate the relative motion between gas and liquid phases. A reliable experimental database for void fraction and bubble velocity is first established over a wide range of flow conditions for bubbly, plug and slug flows in different pipe sizes, due to the limitations of existing database. It is found that the effects of flow regime and pipe size on the drift-flux analysis are insignificant. The drift velocity is found to be negative in horizontal bubbly flow. This is consistent with the conclusion by the 〈α〉–〈β〉 analysis, where the slope is found to be greater than one. This indicates that the gas phase moves slower than the liquid phase in horizontal bubbly flow. The analysis also indicates that the horizontal plug and slug flows are relatively more homogeneous than horizontal bubbly flow. As such, the homogeneous flow model can predict the void fraction better for plug and slug flows. The current drift-flux analysis provides closure relations for C0 and 〈〈Vgj〉〉 that can be employed in TRACE, while existing closure relations are developed for vertical flow and cannot be used for horizontal flow prediction. In addition, various void fraction models in literature are evaluated. It is found that the correlations modified from vertical flow generally cannot predict the void fraction well for horizontal flow. The correlations for plug and slug flows by Franca and Lahey, and Lamari underestimate the void fraction, which may be because these correlations are developed for relatively low jf conditions, while the current work focuses on conditions at jf greater than 2.0 m/s.

The current work seeks to develop the interfacial area transport models for horizontal bubbly flow applicable to various pipe sizes. A steady-state one-dimensional, one-group interfacial area transport equation (IATE) for horizontal adiabatic air-water bubbly flow is presented. The models discussed include: (a) frictional pressure drop prediction based on Lockhart–Martinelli approach; (b) drift-flux based closure relations for void-weighted bubble velocity and void fraction; (c) bubble interaction mechanisms; and (d) local void fraction reconstruction to calculate covariance parameters associated with asymmetric bubble distribution in horizontal bubbly flow. To develop these models, experiments are performed to establish local databases in bubbly flow using the four-sensor conductivity probe in horizontal test facilities with three different inner diameters (38.1 mm, 50.8 mm, and 101.6 mm). In total, 23 test conditions with superficial liquid and gas velocities in the ranges of 3.00–6.00 m/s and 0.08–1.00 m/s, respectively, are employed in the current work. The range of void fraction for the established database is 0.017–0.193. It is demonstrated that, the void weighted bubbly velocity ( >), void fraction ( ), and frictional pressure loss can be predicted very well with an averaged percent difference of ±4.8%, ±4.7%, and ±2.1%, respectively. The covariance parameters can be predicted generally within ±30% using the current approach for void fraction reconstruction. As a result, the IATE can predict the measured interfacial area concentration with an averaged percent difference of ±5.9%, except for the test conditions with large bubbles generated as flow develops. Meanwhile, it is found that decreasing liquid velocity decreases the contributions to the total change of interfacial area concentration by random collision induced bubble coalescence, and turbulent impact induced bubble breakup.

This paper performs experimental studies to investigate the effects of pipe size on horizontal air–water two-phase flow in a wide range of flow configurations. Some of the major characteristic two-phase flow phenomena of interest include flow regime transitions, two-phase frictional pressure drop, local interfacial structures, and drift-flux analysis. Based on the experimental results obtained in two pipe sizes, the flow regime maps and the correlations for two-phase frictional pressure drop employed in conventional nuclear reactor system analysis codes (TRACE and RELAP) are evaluated. It is found that the flow regime maps in the codes incorrectly predict plug and slug flows as bubbly flow. Effects of pipe size on flow regime transitions are observed, while these effects are not reflected on the maps employed in the codes. The frictional pressure drop analysis suggests that the closure relations used in both TRACE and RELAP can be improved for horizontal two-phase flow. The local time-averaged two-phase flow parameters acquired by a four-sensor conductivity probe including void fraction, interfacial area concentration, bubble velocity, and bubble Sauter-mean diameter provide quantitative descriptions for the interfacial structures in different pipe sizes. It is found that increasing the pipe size tends to cause bubbles to be more concentrated near the top wall in bubbly flow. As a result, the bubble layer occupies a smaller portion of the flow area as pipe diameter increases. Based on the experimental database, drift-flux analysis using both the 〈〈vg〉〉 vs. 〈 j〉 and 〈α〉 vs. 〈β〉 methods is performed. The effect of pipe size on drift-flux analysis is found to be negligible. The global slip is found to be less than one, indicating that the gas phase moves slower than the liquid phase in horizontal bubbly flow. This analysis also provides a predictive method to estimate the void-weighted bubble velocity and void fraction, which can be predicted with an average percent difference of ±3.3% and ±3.1%, respectively.

Following Part (I) of the current study, which presents the experimental results of the elbow effects on two-phase flow parameters in bubbly flow, Part (II) develops models and correlations to predict the evolution of these parameters across and downstream of 90° vertical-upward and vertical-downward elbows. To quantify the length requires for the effects of the elbows to dissipate (or the dissipation length), the strength of elbows is defined as the variance of the local void fraction distribution. The axial development of the elbow-strength is modeled by an exponential function of the axial development length based on the experimental data. Then, the dissipation length of the elbow is determined by characterizing the evolution of the elbow-strength parameter. The elbow-strength parameter is also used to correlate the void-weighted bubble velocity and covariance terms in the interfacial area transport equation (IATE). The two-phase pressure drop across vertical elbows is modeled with a modified Lockhart-Martinelli correlation which considers the additional pressure drop induced by elbows. To evaluate the above developed models and correlations, they are implemented into the IATE applicable to the elbow-influenced region. The established IATE together with the available IATE of different flow orientations in straight channels are implemented to predict the interfacial area transport from the vertical-upward to horizontal to vertical-downward two-phase flow across elbows. It is found that the interfacial area concentration predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data with an average absolute percent difference of ±6% throughout the test section. The individual contributions to the interfacial area concentration transport due to each source and sink term in the IATE are discussed, demonstrating that the models and correlations developed for the two-phase flow parameters in elbow regions are reliable.

This study performs experimental investigation on two-phase bubbly flow through 90° vertical elbows going from vertical-upward to horizontal and horizontal to vertical-downward orientations. The elbows have an inner diameter of 50.8 mm and a radius of curvature of 152.4 mm. A detailed database for local and global two-phase flow parameters in different flow orientations and across vertical elbows is established with a state-of-the-art four-sensor conductivity probe, a pressure transducer, and a high-speed video camera. The evolution of void fraction, interfacial area concentration, bubble velocity, and two-phase pressure drop along the axial development length in different orientations and across elbows are presented. It is observed that elbows create secondary flow and cause redistribution of the bubbles, which significantly affect the development of two-phase flow parameters. The effects occur across the elbows and remain for a significant length downstream. The effects on the void fraction distribution downstream of the elbow are discussed in detail for both elbow orientations. Characteristic differences in the elbow effects due to the elbow orientation are observed. For the vertical-upward elbow, a similar trend in the evolution of the void fraction distribution is observed for all flow conditions investigated while two different trends are observed downstream of the vertical-downward elbow. It is found that the effects of the vertical-downward elbow dissipate faster than that of the vertical-upward elbow. The elbow effects on interfacial area concentration, bubble velocity, and two-phase pressure drop are also discussed. The evolution of the interfacial area concentration is similar to that of the void fraction evolution in the straight pipe sections. However, it increases significantly across both elbows due to the promotion of the bubble breakup induced by the secondary flow. The void-weighted area-averaged bubble velocity is subject to significant changes across and immediately downstream of the elbows due to the redistribution of the bubbles. Additionally, the two-phase pressure gradients across the vertical-upward and vertical-downward elbows are approximately 1.5 and 2 times of that in the straight pipe sections.

The current work investigates the plug-to-slug transition in horizontal air–water two-phase flow in small (38.1 mm) and large (101.6 mm) diameter pipes. An extensive database is established to study the local interfacial structure in plug-to-slug transition flow. Detailed measurements across the flow area are performed for nine and six test conditions in small and large pipes, respectively, at three different axial locations downstream of the inlet using the local four-sensor conductivity probe. The effects of jg, jf, development length and pipe size are investigated. It is found that the number of small bubbles in the liquid plug/slug increases significantly in plug-to-slug transition with increasing jg, which are generated by the strong shear between the gas slug and liquid film. Due to the relative motion, these small bubbles either coalesce with the nose of the following plug/slug bubble, or slide between the plug/slug bubble and the wall, and then travel around the pipe circumference to reside beneath the large bubbles. This explains the large number of small bubbles observed at the top of the liquid film for the conditions at high gas flow rates. In the process of traveling downwards, some of the small bubbles coalesce with the slug bubbles. It is also found that increasing jg or jf decreases the size of the small bubbles. While shearing-off is believed to dominate as jg increases, turbulent-impact is enhanced as jf increases due to the increasing turbulence level in the liquid phase. Increasing jg, development length, or decreasing jf slightly increases the depths of the plug/slug bubbles; however, significant growth of plug/slug bubbles is observed in the axial direction. For the same condition, the contribution from large bubbles to total void fraction increases as pipe size increases, while the distribution of total void fraction is similar. The size of both small and large bubbles is found to be larger in the large diameter pipe. Due to the current bubble injection mechanism, small bubbles are generated at the inlet; they coalesce into large bubbles as the flow develops. The large bubble is found to accelerate as it grows along the axial direction, which can lead to a decreasing void fraction although pressure keeps decreasing.

The current work seeks to investigate the interfacial structure and establish an extensive experimental database in horizontal air–water two-phase flow in a 101.6 mm inner diameter pipe. A wide range of flow configurations are studied including bubbly, plug and slug flows. A flow visualization study using the high-speed video camera enables qualitative description of bubbly-to-plug and bubbly-to-slug transitions, while the database of local time-averaged two-phase flow parameters obtained by the four-sensor conductivity probe enables quantitative study on the evolution of the flow. Detailed measurements across the flow area are performed for nine test conditions at three different axial locations downstream of the inlet. Using this database, the effects of superficial liquid and gas velocities, and development length on the evolution of interfacial structure are investigated. Similar characteristics are observed as in a counterpart 38 mm ID horizontal two-phase flow facility, which include (1) the bubbles are found to be more concentrated near the top wall in bubbly flow as superficial liquid velocity decreases at a constant superficial gas velocity, while increasing superficial gas velocity promotes the growth of bubble layer thickness; (2) in bubbly-to-plug transition, the void fraction of small bubbles decreases and the size of small bubbles increases, while in bubbly-to-slug transition, opposite trends are observed. Meanwhile, different characteristics on the evolution of the interfacial structure are also observed, which indicates the effect of increasing pipe diameter. The bubbly-to-plug/slug transition is found to shift to higher superficial liquid velocities as pipe diameter increases. It is observed that the gas phase is more concentrated near the top wall in the large diameter pipe. As a result, the distance between bubbles is smaller and there is a higher chance for bubbles to coalesce into large bubbles. The critical void fraction where the bubbly-to-plug/slug transition initiates decreases as pipe size increases.

The present study seeks to investigate horizontal bubbly-to-plug and bubbly-to-slug transition flows. The two-phase flow structures and transition mechanisms in these transition flows are studied based on experimental database established using the local four-sensor conductivity probe in a 3.81 cm inner diameter pipe. While slug flow needs to be distinguished from plug flow due to the presence of large number of small bubbles (and thus, large interfacial area concentration), both differences and similarities are observed in the evolution of interfacial structures in bubbly-to-plug and bubbly-to-slug transitions. The bubbly-to-plug transition is studied by decreasing the liquid flow rate at a fixed gas flow rate. It is found that as the liquid flow rate is lowered, bubbles pack near the top wall of the pipe due to the diminished role of turbulent mixing. As the flow rate is lowered further, bubbles begin to coalesce and form the large bubbles characteristic of plug flow. Bubble size increases while bubble velocity decreases as liquid flow rate decreases, and the profile of the bubble velocity changes its shape due to the changing interfacial structure. The bubbly-to-slug transition is investigated by increasing the gas flow rate at a fixed liquid flow rate. In this transition, gas phase becomes more uniformly distributed throughout the cross-section due to the formation of large bubbles and the increasing bubble-induced turbulence. The size of small bubbles decreases while bubble velocity increases as gas flow rate increases. The distributions of bubble size and bubble velocity become more symmetric in this transition. While differences are observed in these two transitions, similarities are also noticed. As bubbly-to-plug or bubbly-to-slug transition occurs, the formation of large elongated bubbles is observed not in the uppermost region of bubble layer, but in a lower region. At the beginning of transitions, relative differences in phase velocities near the top of the pipe cross-section to those near the pipe center become larger for both gas and liquid phases, because more densely packed bubbles introduce more resistance to both phases.

International audience; A nonlinear analytical model for the pressure dynamics in a vacuum chamber, pumped with a sputter ion pump (SIP), is proposed, discussed and experimentally evaluated. The model describes the physics of the pumping mechanism of SIPs in the context of a cold-atom experiment. By using this model, we fit pump-down curves of our vacuum system to extract the relevant physical parameters characterizing its pressure dynamics. The aim of this investigation is the optimization of cold-atom experiments in terms of reducing the dead time for quantum sensing using atom interferometry. We develop a calibration method to improve the precision in pressure measurements via the ion current in SIPs. Our method is based on a careful analysis of the gas conductance and pumping in order to reliably link the pressure readings at the SIP with the actual pressure in the vacuum (science) chamber. Our results are in agreement with the existence of essentially two pumping regimes determined by the pressure level in the system. In particular, we find our results in agreement with the well-known fact that for a given applied voltage, at low pressures, the discharge current efficiently sputters pumping material from the pump’s electrodes. This process sets the leading pumping mechanism in this limit. At high pressures, the discharge current drops and the pumping is mainly performed by the already sputtered material.

This study aims to explore what factors are critically associated with job retention in Engineering and Information Technology small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South Korea, and how employers think about staff retention policy in relation to business growth. This contrasts with previous studies that mainly focus on employee motivation, job retention, and turnover. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face with founder Chief Executive Officers (CEOs). The results suggest that an important factor influencing job retention policies of these SMEs was to motivate employees to make greater voluntary effort, including through developing a collaborative organizational culture, rather than solely offering them additional financial rewards or using other Human Resource Management (HRM) practices to improve individual performances. Interviewees believed that job retention and business growth were closely related, and they discussed various ways of eliciting emotional commitment from employees. Unlike research on larger firms, these suggestions did not involve immediate financial rewards. How employers thought that the roles played by employees strongly influenced their firm&rsquo, s productivity and competitiveness. This study suggests SME employers adjust their retention policy specifically to improve their firm&rsquo, s survival and long-term growth.

The objective of this study is to advance the local multi-sensor conductivity probe measurement technique through systematic investigation into several practical aspects of a conductivity probe measurement system. Firstly, signal “ghosting” among probe sensors is found to cause artificially high bubble velocity measurements and low interfacial area concentration (ai) measurements that depend on sampling frequency and sensor impedance. A revised electrical circuit is suggested to eliminate this artificial variability. Secondly, the sensitivity of the probe measurements to sampling frequency is investigated in 13 two-phase flow conditions with superficial liquid and gas velocities ranging from 1.00–5.00 m/s and 0.17–2.0 m/s, respectively. With increasing gas flow rate, higher sampling frequencies, greater than 100 kHz in some cases, are required to adequately capture the bubble number frequency and ai measurements. This trend is due to the increase in gas velocity and the transition to the slug flow regime. Thirdly, the sensitivity of the probe measurements to the measurement duration as well as the sample number is investigated for the same flow conditions. Measurements of both group-I (spherical/distorted) and group-II (cap/slug/churn-turbulent) bubbles are found to be relatively insensitive to both the measurement duration and the number of bubbles, as long as the measurements are made for a duration long enough to capture a collection of samples characteristic to a given two-phase flow system (or a statistical ensemble). Fourthly, investigation into the orientation of a double-sensor probe in the pipe indicates that the sensors should be oriented parallel to the pipe wall to ensure symmetric bubble velocity measurements. Lastly, Monte Carlo simulations are performed to study the effects of the axial (s) and lateral (d) probe sensor separation distances. In addition to previous criteria on the ratio of s to the bubble diameter, it is found that s/d should be greater than four to minimize errors in the measured bubble velocity.

This study develops a one-group interfacial area transport equation (IATE) for vertical-upward-to-horizontal air–water bubbly two-phase flows through a 90° elbow with a non-dimensional centerline radius of curvature of three. In order to develop the model, an extensive database is established by acquiring local two-phase flow parameters using a four-sensor conductivity probe upstream and downstream of the elbow. The data show there exist three characteristic regions in void distribution, including a bimodal-to-bimodal region, a bimodal-to-single-peaked region, and a developed horizontal flow region with void accumulated at the top of the pipe cross-section. Using the database, the preliminary dissipation length model developed by Yadav et al. (2014b) is improved by including the transition region near the exit of the elbow in addition to the dissipation region. To close the IATE model, the bubble velocity advection term and bubble interaction terms in the IATE are correlated with the parameter characterizing the “elbow-strength”. The two-phase pressure drop across the elbow is modeled using the modified Lockhart–Martinelli correlation which takes into account the minor loss effect. The closed IATE model is implemented to predict interfacial area transport in vertical-upward-to-horizontal two-phase flow. It is found that the developed model is capable of predicting interfacial area concentration with an average percent difference of less than ±6%.

The use of gas dissolution devices to improve the efficiency of H2 dissolution has enhanced CO2 reduction and CH4 production. In addition, the nutrients that initially existed in anaerobic sludge were exhausted over time, and the activities of anaerobic microorganisms declined. When nutrients were artificially injected, CO2 reduction and CH4 production rates climbed. Thus, assuming that the activity of the obligatory anaerobic microorganisms is maintained, a gas dissolution device will further enhance the efficiency of CO2 reduction and CH4 production.

OBJECTIVES: To describe and evaluate epidemiological investigation results and containment measures implemented in Busan, where 108 cases were confirmed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) between February 21, 2020 and March 24, 2020. METHODS: Any individual who tested positive for COVID-19 was classified as a confirmed case. Measures were taken to identify the source of infection and trace and quarantine contacts. Serial intervals were estimated and the effective reproduction number was computed. RESULTS: Of the total 18,303 COVID-19 tests performed between January 16, 2020 and March 24, 2020 in Busan, 108 yielded positive results (positive test rate, 0.6%). All confirmed cases were placed in isolation at hospitals. Of the 108 confirmed cases, 59 (54.6%) were female. The most common age group was 20-29 years with 37 cases (34.3%). Regarding symptoms at the time of diagnosis, cough (n=38, 35.2%) and fever (n=34, 31.5%) were most common; 12 cases (11.1%) were asymptomatic. The source of infection was identified in 99 cases (91.7%). A total of 3,223 contacts were identified and quarantined. Household contacts accounted for 196, and the household secondary attack rate was 8.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 4.7 to 12.9). The mean serial interval was estimated to be 5.54 days (95% CI, 4.08 to 7.01). After February 26, (Rt) remained below 1 in Busan. CONCLUSIONS: The early containment strategy implemented in Busan shows that control is possible if outbreaks are of limited scope. In preparation for future outbreaks, public health and healthcare systems should be re-examined and put in a ready state.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to reveal the epidemiologic characteristics of the outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Thompson in Busan Metropolitan City and to identify points for improvement to prevent of food-borne disease outbreak.METHODS: This was a case-control study. The control group comprised asymptomatic students in the same classes of the cases. The presence or absence of symptoms, ingestion of each food provided by school meal service, and commonly ingested foods in addition to those foods in meal service were investigated. Moreover, specimens collected from rectal swab, preserved foods, and environmental surface were tested.RESULTS: Of the 6,092 subjects, 1,111 (1,083 students, 22 school personnel, and 6 foodservice employees) were included in the case group; this corresponded to an 18.4% attack rate. Symptoms included diarrhea (n=1,051, 94.6%), abdominal pain (n=931, 83.8%), febrile sensation (n=502, 45.2%), and vomiting (n=275, 24.8%). The epidemic curves of each 10 schools were unimodal. Investigation of food intake showed a significantly high odds ratio for chocolate cake in 5 out of the 10 schools. Laboratory test detected Salmonella enterica serovar Thompson both in rectal swab specimens of 9 schools and in collected preserved chocolate cakes of 9 schools. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis test result showed that Salmonella enterica seorvar Thompson isolated from human and foods were the same.CONCLUSIONS: The source of infection for the Salmonella enterica serovar Thompson outbreak in the 10 schools of Busan Metropolitan City is chocolate cake. Traceback investigation for origin of contaminated food in food-borne disease outbreak and safety control during food production should be more enhanced.

As a part of characterizing the bubble interaction mechanisms and flow regime transition processes in horizontal gas–liquid two-phase flow, a flow visualization study is performed in an air–water test facility constructed from 3.81 cm inner diameter clear acrylic round pipes. The test section is approximately 250 diameters in length to allow for development of the flow. Flow visualizations are performed using a high-speed video camera at 80 and 245 diameters downstream of the inlet to observe the development of the flow structures. A total of 27 flow conditions including bubbly, plug, slug, stratified, wavy, and annular flows are characterized in the present study. In highly turbulent bubbly flow conditions it is found that the distribution becomes more uniform with increasing development length through a turbulence penetration process that counters the effect of buoyancy. It is also found that plug bubbles form below a layer of small bubbles rather than at the upper pipe wall where the bubbles are most packed. In fact, it is consistently found that turbulence-based bubble interactions do not occur in the most densely packed regions as the eddies there are not large enough to effect the bubbles. Rather, bubble packing-induced coalescence occurs in these regions and contributes to the formation of plug bubbles. The newly formed plug bubbles move faster than, and ultimately pass, the smaller bubbles above due to the effect of the wall. These small bubbles are subsequently overtaken by the following plug bubble and coalesce with the nose region through a process denoted as drag-induced coalescence.

The current work seeks to develop an additional database in air–water horizontal bubbly flow through a 3.81 cm inner diameter test section with a total development length of approximately 250 diameters. The experimental conditions are chosen to cover a wide range of the bubbly flow regime based upon flow visualization using a high-speed video camera. A database of local time-averaged void fraction, bubble velocity, interfacial area concentration, and bubble Sauter mean diameter are acquired throughout the entire pipe cross-section using a four-sensor conductivity probe for nine flow conditions. To investigate the evolution of the flow, measurements are made at axial locations of 44, 116, and 244 diameters downstream of the inlet. Using this database, the effects of gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, and development length on the local and area-averaged two-phase flow parameters are presented. From the local profiles, it is found that highly turbulent liquid flow conditions cause the void fraction profile to become more uniform with increasing development length through a turbulent mixing process which counters the effect of buoyancy. Bubble interactions are also observed to play a significant role in the evolution of the flow such that the area-averaged void fraction and interfacial area concentration can have different axial trends.

This paper presents a robust spur reduction technique using a switched-capacitor feedback differential phase-locked loop (PLL) and a delay-locked-loop (DLL)-based spread-spectrum clock generation in a UHF-band RF identification transmitter (TX). The proposed differential PLL is characterized by adopting a switched-capacitor common-mode feedback and distributed varactor biasing scheme to the differential charge pump and voltage-controlled oscillator designs, respectively, which results in down to ${-}{\hbox{94}}$ dBc in reference spur rejection with all digital parts off. Additionally, by adopting an 8-bit DLL and Hershey-Kiss modulated profile together, the proposed spread-spectrum clock generator shows more than 20-dB electromagnetic-interference reduction while providing up-, down-, and center-spread modes. Implemented in a 0.18- $\mu{\hbox{m}}$ CMOS process, the proposed TX achieves ${ -dBc spur suppression with 25-dBm transmit power at 920 MHz, which complies with the most stringent regulatory spectral mask without a surface acoustic wave filter.

According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) guidelines, when calculating CO2 emissions, CO2 emissions from biomass should be excluded from the total amount of CO2 emissions and should be separately reported due to their "carbon neutrality". Sewage sludge is one of the representative biomass fuels. It is mixed with fossil fuels to achieve greenhouse gas reduction or is used by itself as a fuel to replace fossil fuels. According to the results of this study, biomass fractions of both the sewage sludge and the sewage sludge incineration exhaust gases did not amount to 100%. At present, in many countries (South Korea, Japan, and Germany), when calculating greenhouse gas emissions from sewage sludge incinerators, all CO2 emissions from sewage sludge are judged to be biomass and only the greenhouse gas emissions that correspond to non-CO2 gases are calculated as greenhouse gas emissions. However, since, according our results, the content of sewage sludge is not 100% biomass, if CO2 emissions are excluded according to the existing greenhouse gas emission calculation method, the amount of emissions may be underestimated. Therefore, to accurately calculate greenhouse gas emissions from a sewage sludge incinerator, CO2 emissions should be calculated in consideration of the fossil carbon fractions of sewage sludge.

This study develops a method to characterize the elbow-region for vertical-upward-to-horizontal air–water bubbly two-phase flows through a 90° elbow with a non-dimensional centerline radius of curvature, RC/D, of three. The dissipation of the elbow-effects in the horizontal region downstream of the elbow is characterized by the change in the local void fraction distribution. To quantify the dissipation characteristics, the elbow-strength, S, is defined as the inverse of the second moment of the local void fraction distribution. It is found that the elbow-strength decreases exponentially with increasing development length in the elbow-region. The slope of decrease of the elbow-strength in the elbow-region is determined by the dissipation parameter, β. The dissipation parameter determines the development length required for the elbow-effects on the two-phase flow parameters to become negligible. It is found that the dissipation parameter is a linear function of the mixture Reynolds number for the flow conditions investigated in the present study.

This study investigates the geometric effects of a 90-degree vertical-upward elbow on local two-phase flow-parameters in an air–water system, and develops an experimental database for interfacial area transport modeling. The experimental facility is constructed from 5.08 cm inner diameter acrylic pipes and includes vertical and horizontal sections interconnected by a 90-degree vertical glass elbow. The elbow has a radius of curvature of 15.24 cm and is installed at L / D = 63 from the inlet. A four-sensor conductivity probe is used to measure time-averaged local two-phase flow parameters including: void fraction, bubble velocity, interfacial area concentration, and bubble frequency at ten axial locations along the test section. It is observed that the bubbles moving through the vertical-upward elbow are entrained by the secondary flow leading to a bimodal distribution in bubbly flow conditions. For the flow conditions investigated within the study, this bimodal distribution occurs regardless of the bubble distribution upstream of the elbow. It is found that the change in bubble distribution downstream of the elbow is strongly correlated to the dissipation of the elbow effects. Furthermore, the dissipation characteristics as well as the length of dissipation region for the vertical-upward elbow are found to be a strong function of the liquid-phase flow rate.

The purpose of this study is to characterize the swirling secondary flow in the downstream of a pipe bend using a numerical simulation of the flow. The CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software OpenFOAM is used to simulate the turbulent flow in pipes with elbow. Various turbulence models are benchmarked with the existing experimental data and a comparative study is performed to select an appropriate turbulence model for the analysis. Predictions made by the selected turbulence model are compared with the LDA (Laser Doppler anemometer) measurements from the experiments currently conducted to find the dependency of the flows on the Reynolds number. It is found that the swirl intensity of the secondary flow is a strong function of the radius of curvature of the bend and a weak function of the Reynolds number. Additionally, it is found that the dissipation of the swirl intensity is exponential in nature.

Thermodynamic and economic analyses of various types of gas turbine combined cycle power plants have been performed to establish criteria for optimization of power plants. The concept of efficiency, in terms of the difference in energy levels of electricity and heat, was introduced. The efficiency of power and heat generation by power plants with other purposes was estimated, and power generation costs were figured out for various types of combined heat and power plants(i.e., fired and unfired, condensing and non-condensing modes, single or double pressure HRSG).

This study performs scaled separate-effects experiments to investigate the gravity-driven ingress of air into a helium filled vessel. Experiments are performed under both adiabatic and heated conditions up to 100 °C. An oxygen analyzer is employed to measure the transient oxygen concentration inside the test vessel during the ingress event. The air-ingress transient is found to be characterized by three distinct stages, namely: (a) The initial stage where the exchange flow rate linearly increases with time until it reaches its maxima and makes a transition; (b) The intermediate stage where the exchange flow rate decreases from its maximum value and varies non-linearly with time; and (c) The final stage of ingress where the exchange rate decreases asymptotically to zero towards the end of the ingress. An extensive oxygen concentration transient database is established accounting for various effects including the pipe-break size (or length-to-diameter ratios), break location, break orientation and the initial helium temperature. Predictive models are developed for the mixture density transient and the exchange flow rate during entire ingress process. Additionally, a non-dimensional critical density ratio is defined that determines the point of transition between the initial and the intermediate stages of the ingress process.

This brief presents a low-voltage and low-noise ring voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) where the phase noise performance is improved by reducing the total channel thermal noise injected into the output node of the VCO during the transition period of the output voltage swing. Implemented in a 65-nm CMOS technology, the proposed ring VCO operates from 485.7 to 1011.6 MHz. At 645 MHz, the measured phase noise is $-$ 110.8 dBc/Hz at an offset of 1 MHz while dissipating 10 mW from a 1-V supply.

In this study, in order to understand accurate calculation of greenhouse gas emissions of urban solid waste incineration facilities, which are major waste incineration facilities, and problems likely to occur at this time, emissions were calculated by classifying calculation methods into 3 types. For the comparison of calculation methods, the waste characteristics ratio, dry substance content by waste characteristics, carbon content in dry substance, and (12)C content were analyzed; and in particular, CO2 concentration in incineration gases and (12)C content were analyzed together. In this study, 3 types of calculation methods were made through the assay value, and by using each calculation method, emissions of urban solid waste incineration facilities were calculated then compared. As a result of comparison, with Calculation Method A, which used the default value as presented in the IPCC guidelines, greenhouse gas emissions were calculated for the urban solid waste incineration facilities A and B at 244.43 ton CO2/day and 322.09 ton CO2/day, respectively. Hence, it showed a lot of difference from Calculation Methods B and C, which used the assay value of this study. It is determined that this was because the default value as presented in IPCC, as the world average value, could not reflect the characteristics of urban solid waste incineration facilities. Calculation Method B indicated 163.31 ton CO2/day and 230.34 ton CO2/day respectively for the urban solid waste incineration facilities A and B; also, Calculation Method C indicated 151.79 ton CO2/day and 218.99 ton CO2/day, respectively.This study intends to compare greenhouse gas emissions calculated using (12)C content default value provided by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) with greenhouse gas emissions calculated using (12)C content and waste assay value that can reflect the characteristics of the target urban solid waste incineration facilities. Also, the concentration and (12)C content were calculated by directly collecting incineration gases of the target urban solid waste incineration facilities, and greenhouse gas emissions of the target urban solid waste incineration facilities through this survey were compared with greenhouse gas emissions, which used the previously calculated assay value of solid waste.

In Korea, the amount of greenhouse gases released due to waste materials was 14,800,000 t CO2eq in 2012, which increased from 5,000,000 t CO2eq in 2010. This included the amount released due to incineration, which has gradually increased since 2010. Incineration was found to be the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases, with 7,400,000 t CO2eq released in 2012. Therefore, with regards to the trading of greenhouse gases emissions initiated in 2015 and the writing of the national inventory report, it is important to increase the reliability of the measurements related to the incineration of waste materials. This research explored methods for estimating the biomass fraction at Korean MSW incinerator facilities and compared the biomass fractions obtained with the different biomass fraction estimation methods. The biomass fraction was estimated by the method using default values of fossil carbon fraction suggested by IPCC, the method using the solid waste composition, and the method using incinerator flue gas. The highest biomass fractions in Korean municipal solid waste incinerator facilities were estimated by the IPCC Default method, followed by the MSW analysis method and the Flue gas analysis method. Therefore, the difference in the biomass fraction estimate was the greatest between the IPCC Default and the Flue gas analysis methods. The difference between the MSW analysis and the flue gas analysis methods was smaller than the difference with IPCC Default method. This suggested that the use of the IPCC default method cannot reflect the characteristics of Korean waste incinerator facilities and Korean MSW.Incineration is one of most effective methods for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW). This paper investigates the applicability of using biomass content to estimate the amount of CO2 released, and compares the biomass contents determined by different methods in order to establish a method for estimating biomass in the MSW incinerator facilities of Korea. After analyzing the biomass contents of the collected solid waste samples and the flue gas samples, the results were compared with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) method, and it seems that to calculate the biomass fraction it is better to use the flue gas analysis method than the IPCC method. It is valuable to design and operate a real new incineration power plant, especially for the estimation of greenhouse gas emissions.

This paper presents a method to determine the optimal locations for installing back-to-back (BtB) converters in a power grid as a countermeasure to reduce fault current levels. The installation of BtB converters can be regarded as network reconfiguration. For the purpose, a hybrid multistarting GA-tabu search method was used to determine the best locations from a preselected list of candidate locations. The constraints used in determining the best locations include circuit breaker fault current limits, proximity of proposed locations, and capability of the solution to reach power flow convergence. A simple power injection model after applying line-opening on selected branches was used as a means for power flows with BtB converters. Kron reduction was also applied as a method for network reduction for fast evaluation of fault currents with a given topology. Simulations of the search method were performed on the Korean power system, particularly the Seoul metropolitan area.

Introduction Korea has been making efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including a voluntary commitment to the target of a 30% reduction, based on business-as-usual of the total GHG emission volume, by 2020; 2006 IPCC Guidelines provided default values, applying country-specific emission factors was recommended when estimating national greenhouse gas emissions. Results and discussion This study focused on anthracite produced in Korea in order to provide basic data for developing country-specific emission factor. This study has estimated CO2 emission factors to use worksheet of which five steps consisted according to the fuel analysis method. Conclusion As a result, the average of net colorific value for 3 years (2007∼2009) was 4,519 kcal/kg, and the CO2 emission factor was calculated to be 111,446 kg/TJ, which is about 11.8% lower than the 2006 IPCC guidelines default value, and about 7.9% higher than the US EPA emission factor.

This study was conducted to develop a novel combined system of a hybrid rotating biological contactor (RBC) process that was composed of an attached- and suspended- biomass reactor, followed by a settler and a biological aerated filter (BAF) column to treat a high strength slaughter wastewater. Long term influences of organic and nitrogen loading rates were investigated to see how the combined system worked in terms of the removal efficiency. A synthetic wastewater containing a pork cutlet steak source (commercially available) and swine blood was used to feed the combined system. The hybrid RBC process showed excellent removals: about 95% for soluble COD and 85% for ammonium nitrogen. However, the unsettled solids seriously deteriorated the removal efficiency of total COD (TCOD) and total nitrogen (TN) in the RBC process. A significant fraction of the TCOD and suspended solids (SS) was further removed in the BAF column although the effluent quality was still unsatisfactory, giving TCOD 300 mg/L, SS 180 mg/L and TN 59 mg/L. An addition of polyaluminium chloride into the RBC effluent improved the performance of the settler and BAF, producing an excellent quality of final effluent; TCOD 16.5 mg/L, SS 0 mg/L, TN 55.5 mg/L, TP 1.3 mg/L. Therefore, it was confirmed that the combined system of hybrid RBC and BAF could treat a high strength slaughter wastewater excellently.

Environmental problems and climate change arising from waste incineration are taken quite seriously in the world. In Korea, the waste disposal methods are largely classified into landfill, incineration, recycling, etc. and the amount of incinerated waste has risen by 24.5% from 2002. In the analysis of CO₂emissions estimations of waste incinerators fossil carbon content are main factor by the IPCC. FCF differs depending on the characteristics of waste in each country, and a wide range of default values are proposed by the IPCC. This study conducted research on the existing classifications of the IPCC and Korean waste classification systems based on FCF for accurate greenhouse gas emissions estimation of waste incineration. The characteristics possible for sorting were classified according to FCF and form. The characteristics sorted according to fossil carbon fraction were paper, textiles, rubber, and leather. Paper was classified into pure paper and processed paper; textiles were classified into cotton and synthetic fibers; and rubber and leather were classified into artificial and natural. The analysis of FCF was implemented by collecting representative samples from each classification group, by applying the 14C method, and using AMS equipment. And the analysis values were compared with the default values proposed by the IPCC. In this study of garden and park waste and plastics, the differences were within the range of the IPCC default values or the differences were negligible. However, coated paper, synthetic textiles, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, artificial leather, and other wastes showed differences of over 10% in FCF content. IPCC is comprised of largely 9 types of qualitative classifications, in emissions estimation a great difference can occur from the combined characteristics according with the existing IPCC classification system by using the minutely classified waste characteristics as in this study.Fossil carbon fraction (FCF) differs depending on the characteristics of waste in each country; and a wide range of default values are proposed by the IPCC. This study conducted research on the existing classifications of the IPCC and Korean waste classification systems based on FCF for accurate greenhouse gas emissions estimation of waste incineration.

The objective of the current study is to better understand the interfacial structure and its development in an air–water planar bubble jet, as well as to provide a unique benchmark data set for a 3D thermal-hydraulic analysis code. Both flow visualization and local measurements were performed in three characteristic flow conditions at four elevations along a test section with a cross section of 200 mm in width and 10 mm in gap. A high-speed digital video camera was applied in the flow visualization study to capture the flow structures and bubble interaction phenomena, while a miniaturized four-sensor conductivity probe was used to acquire the time-averaged local void fraction, interfacial velocity, and bubble number frequency. Also, the interfacial area concentration and the averaged bubble Sauter mean diameter were obtained from the local measurements. The lateral bubble transport and bubble interaction mechanisms were clearly demonstrated in the acquired data.

Accurate prediction of the interfacial area concentration is essential to successful development of the interfacial transfer terms in the two-fluid model. Mechanistic modeling of the interfacial area concentration entirely relies on accurate local flow measurements over extensive flow conditions and channel geometries. From this point of view, accurate measurements of flow parameters such as void fraction, interfacial area concentration, and interfacial velocity were performed by a multi-sensor probe at three axial locations as well as seven radial locations in vertical downward bubbly flows using a 25.4 mm-diameter pipe. In the experiment, the superficial liquid velocity and the void fraction ranged from −1.25 to −3.11 m/s and from 1.61% to 21.0%, respectively.
