Tungsten-based low-activation high-entropy alloys are possible candidates for next-generation fusion reactors due to their exceptional tolerance to irradiation, thermal loads, and stress. We develop an accurate and efficient machine-learned interatomic potential for the W-Ta-Cr-V system and use it in hybrid Monte Carlo molecular dynamics simulations of ordering and segregation to all common types of defects in WTaCrV. The predictions are compared to atom probe tomography analysis of segregation and precipitation in WTaCrV thin films. By also considering two other alloys, WTaV and MoNbTaVW, we are able to draw general conclusions about preferred segregation in refractory alloys and the reasons behind it, guiding future alloy design and elucidating experimental observations. We show that the experimentally observed CrV precipitates in WTaCrV form semicoherent bcc-to-bcc interfaces with the surrounding matrix, as coherent precipitates are not thermodynamically stable due to excessive lattice mismatch. The predictions from simulations align well with our atom probe tomography analysis as well as previous experimental observations.

Field evaporation from ionic or covalently bonded materials often leads to the emission of molecular ions. The metastability of these molecular ions, particularly under the influence of the intense electrostatic field (1010 Vm-1), makes them prone to dissociation with or without an exchange of energy amongst them. These processes can affect the analytical performance of atom probe tomography (APT). For instance, neutral species formed through dissociation may not be detected at all or with a time of flight no longer related to their mass, causing their loss from the analysis. Here, we evaluated the changes in the measured composition of FeO, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 across a wide range of analysis conditions. Possible dissociation reactions are predicted by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations considering the spin states of the molecules. The energetically favoured reactions are traced on to the multi-hit ion correlation histograms, to confirm their existence within experiments, using an automated Python-based routine. The detected reactions are carefully analysed to reflect upon the influence of these neutrals from dissociation reactions on the performance of APT for analysing iron oxides.

Perovskite structured transition metal oxides are important technological materials for catalysis and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Their functionality often depends on oxygen diffusivity and mobility through complex oxide heterostructures, which can be significantly impacted by structural and chemical modifications, such as doping. Further, when utilized within electrochemical cells, interfacial reactions with other components (e.g. Ni- and Cr-based alloy electrodes and interconnects) can influence the perovskite's reactivity and ion transport, leading to complex dependencies that are difficult to control in real-world environments. Here we use isotopic tracers and atom probe tomography to directly visualize oxygen diffusion and transport pathways across perovskite and metal-perovskite heterostructures, i.e. (Ni-Cr coated) Sr-doped lanthanum ferrite (LSFO). Annealing in 18O2(g) results in elemental and isotopic redistributions through oxygen exchange (OE) in the LSFO while Ni-Cr undergoes oxidation via multiple mechanisms and transport pathways. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations at experimental conditions provide rationale for OE reaction mechanisms and reveal a complex interplay of different thermodynamic and kinetic drivers. Corrosion is a ubiquitous failure mode of materials in extreme environments. The more localized it is, the more difficult it is to detect and more deleterious its effects. Often, the progression of localized corrosion is accompanied by the evolution of porosity in materials, creating internal void-structures that facilitate the ingress of the external environment into the interior of the material, further accelerating the internal corrosion. Previously, the dominant morphology of such void-structures has been reported to be either three-dimensional (3D) or two-dimensional (2D). Here, we report a more localized form of corrosion, which we call 1D wormhole corrosion. Using electron tomography, we show multiple examples of this 1D and percolating morphology that manifests a significantly high aspect ratio differentiable from 2D and 3D corrosion. To understand the origin of this mechanism in a Ni-Cr alloy corroded by molten salt, we combined energy-filtered four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (EF-4D-STEM) and ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations to develop a vacancy mapping method with nanometer-resolution, identifying a remarkably high vacancy concentration in the diffusion-induced grain boundary migration (DIGM) zone, up to 100 times the equilibrium value at the melting point. These vacancy supersaturation regions act as the precursors of wormholes, and lead to the asymmetrical growth of voids along GBs. We show that similar 1D penetrating corrosion morphologies could also occur in other materials or corrosion conditions, implying the broad impact of this extremely localized corrosion mechanism. Deciphering the origins of 1D corrosion is an important step towards designing structural materials with enhanced corrosion resistance, and also offers new pathways to create ordered-porous materials for functional applications.

The worldwide developments of electric vehicles, as well as large-scale or grid-scale energy storage to compensate the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation has generated a surge of interest in battery technology. Understanding the factors controlling battery capacity and, critically, their degradation mechanisms to ensure long-term, sustainable and safe operation requires detailed knowledge of their microstructure and chemistry, and their evolution under operating conditions, on the nanoscale. Atom probe tomography (APT) provides compositional mapping of materials in three-dimensions with sub-nanometre resolution, and is poised to play a key role in battery research. However, APT is underpinned by an intense electric-field that can drive lithium migration, and many battery materials are reactive oxides, requiring careful handling and sample transfer. Here, we report on the analysis of both anode and cathode materials, and show that electric-field driven migration can be suppressed by using shielding by embedding powder particles in a metallic matrix or by using a thin conducting surface layer. We demonstrate that for a typical cathode material, cryogenic specimen preparation and transport under ultra-high vacuum leads to major delithiation of the specimen during the analysis. In contrast, transport of specimens through air enables analysis of the material. Finally, we discuss the possible physical underpinnings and discuss ways forward to enable shield of the electric field, which helps address the challenges inherent to the APT analysis of battery materials.

Understanding and predicting the dominant diffusion processes in Cr2O3 is essential to its optimization for anti-corrosion coatings, spintronics, and other applications. Despite significant theoretical effort in modeling defect mediated diffusion in Cr2O3 the correlation with experimentally measured diffusivities remains poor partly due to the insufficient accuracy of the theoretical approaches. Here an attempt to resolve these discrepancies is made through high accuracy density functional theory simulations coupled with grand canonical formalism of defect thermochemistry. In this approach, point defect formation energies were computed using hybrid exchange correlation functional. This level of theory proved to be essential for achieving the agreement with experimental self-diffusion coefficients. The analysis of the resulting self-diffusion coefficients indicate that chromium has higher mobility at low temperatures and high oxygen partial pressures, in particular at standard temperature and pressure conditions. At high vacuum, high temperature conditions, oxygen diffusion becomes dominant. At Cr/Cr2O3 interfaces O vacancies were found to be more mobile than Cr vacancies at all temperatures. Cr diffuses preferentially along the c-axis at low temperatures but switches to basal plane at higher temperatures. Intergranular attack of alloys under hydrothermal conditions is a complex problem that depends on metal and oxygen transport kinetics via solid-state and channel-like pathways to an advancing oxidation front. Experiments reveal very different rates of intergranular attack and minor element depletion distances ahead of the oxidation front for nickel-based binary alloys depending on the minor element. For example, a significant Cr depletion up to 9 microns ahead of grain boundary crack tips were documented for Ni-5Cr binary alloy, in contrast to relatively moderate Al depletion for Ni-5Al (~100s of nm). We present a mathematical kinetics model that adapts Wagner's model for thick film growth to intergranular attack of binary alloys. The transport coefficients of elements O, Ni, Cr, and Al in bulk alloys and along grain boundaries were estimated from the literature. For planar surface oxidation, a critical concentration of the minor element can be determined from the model where the oxide of minor element becomes dominant over the major element. This generic model for simple grain boundary oxidation can predict oxidation penetration velocities and minor element depletion distances ahead of the advancing front that are comparable to experimental data. The significant distance of depletion of Cr in Ni-5Cr in contrast to the localized Al depletion in Ni-5Al can be explained by the model due to the combination of the relatively faster diffusion of Cr along the grain boundary and slower diffusion in bulk grains, relative to Al.

First principles density functional theory (DFT) investigation of native interstitials and the associated self-diffusion mechanisms in {\alpha}-Cr2O3 reveals that interstitials are more mobile than vacancies of corresponding species. Cr interstitials occupy the unoccupied Cr sublattice sites that are octahedrally coordinated by 6 O atoms, and O interstitials form a dumbbell configuration orientated along the [221] direction (diagonal) of the corundum lattice. Calculations predict that neutral O interstitials are predominant in O-rich conditions and Cr interstitials in +2 and +1 charge states are the dominant interstitial defects in Cr-rich conditions. Similar to that of the vacancies, the charge transition levels of both O and Cr interstitials are located deep within the bandgap. Transport calculations reveal a rich variety of interstitial diffusion mechanisms that are species, charge, and orientation dependent. Cr interstitials diffuse preferably along the diagonal of corundum lattice in a two step process via an intermediate defect complex comprising a Cr interstitial and an adjacent Cr Frenkel defect in the neighboring Cr bilayer. This mechanism is similar to that of the vacancy mediated Cr diffusion along the c-axis with intermediate Cr vacancy and Cr Frenkel defect combination. In contrast, O interstitials diffuse via bond switching mechanism. The cold emission of particles from surfaces under intense electric fields is a process which underpins a variety of applications including atom probe tomography (APT), an analytical microscopy technique with near-atomic spatial resolution. Increasingly relying on fast laser pulsing to trigger the emission, APT experiments often incorporate the detection of molecular ions emitted from the specimen, in particular from covalently or ionically bonded materials. Notably, it has been proposed that neutral molecules can also be emitted during this process. However, this remains a contentious issue. To investigate the validity of this hypothesis, a careful review of the literature is combined with the development of new methods to treat experimental APT data, the modelling of ion trajectories, and the application of density-functional theory (DFT) simulations to derive molecular ion energetics. It is shown that the direct thermal emission of neutral molecules is extremely unlikely. However, neutrals can still be formed in the course of an APT experiment by dissociation of metastable molecular ions.

Environmental attack has the potential to limit turbine disk durability, particularly in next generation engines which will run hotter; there is a need to understand better oxidation at potential service conditions and develop models that link microstructure to fatigue response. More efficient gas turbine engine designs will require higher operating temperatures. Turbine disks are regarded as critical flight safety components; a failure is a serious hazard. Low cycle fatigue is an important design criteria for turbine disks. Powder metallurgy alloys, like ME3, have led to major improvements in temperature performance through refractory additions (e.g. Mo,W) at the expense of environmental resistance (Al, Cr). Service conditions for aerospace disks can produce major cycle periods extending from minutes to hours and days with total service times exceeding 1,000 hours in aerospace applications. Some of the effects of service can be captured by extended exposures at elevated temperature prior to LCF testing. Some details of the work presented here have been published.
