La protection de l'environnement est aujourd'hui un enjeu majeur à toutes les échelles. En France comme dans de nombreux pays dans le monde, l’une des stratégies clés dans ce domaine est la protection d’espaces naturels faisant l’objet de mesures de gestion et/ou de restauration. De nombreux acteurs scientifiques et institutionnels se positionnent pour proposer des cadres afin de rationaliser ces mesures de gestion/restauration, mais ces démarches ne font que très rarement l’objet d’analyses scientifiques critiques. Un guide méthodologique a ainsi été récemment développé pour guider de manière cohérente tous les acteurs concernés par l’élaboration des plans de gestion d’Espaces naturels protégés (ENPs) français. Nous proposons ici la première évaluation scientifique de ce guide. Celle-ci s’appuie sur l'application d'un cadre évaluatif constitué de trois critères : les fondements scientifiques, l'opérationnalité, et la légitimité. L’application de ces critères nous permet de mettre en évidence certaines faiblesses du guide, qui sont susceptibles d’influencer négativement la qualité des activités des gestionnaires qui l’utilisent. Nous montrons des pistes d’amélioration par le déploiement de démarches participatives, que le guide mentionne rapidement alors qu’il devrait leur accorder une plus grande importance, en explicitant les modalités de mise en œuvre et les précautions à prendre pour les déployer. Nowadays, environmental protection is a major issue at all scales. In France, as in many countries around the world, one of this field’s key strategy is the protection of natural areas through management and/or restoration measures. Numerous scientific and institutional actors are positioning themselves to propose frameworks to rationalize these management/restoration measures, but these approaches are very rarely the subject of critical scientific analysis. A methodological guide was recently developed to provide coherent guidance to all of those involved in the management of French Protected Natural Areas. We propose here the first scientific evaluation of this guide. It is based on the application of an evaluation framework made up of three criteria: scientific basis, operationality, and legitimacy. These criteria’s application allows us to highlight certain weaknesses within the guide, which are likely to have a negative impact on the quality of the activities led by the managers who use it. We show ways of improving the guide by deploying participatory approaches, which the guide mentions quickly when it should give them greater importance, by explaining the implementation methods and the necessary precautions to be taken in deploying them.

The European Commission has promoted the deployment of the Digitalisation of Energy Action Plan (DoEAP), in order to develop an efficient, competitive market for a digital energy infrastructure and digital energy services that are both cyber-secure and sustainable. A central aspect of DoEAP is represented by the concept of Energy Data Spaces. Data exchange is crucial for emerging energy data services in the digital energy market and will help suppliers and energy service providers to innovate and cope with an increasing share of renewables in a more decentralised energy system. The data includes metering data, data from consumers such as home appliances, building automation, EV charging stations, or prosumers PV panel & inverters. Its availability and timely sharing and use among the relevant players is key for the energy transition. This document addresses main issues of data exchange in the three interconnected key sectors: energy, buildings and mobility; the analyses focus on existing concepts of data formats and data standards, reflecting on how to facilitate data sharing across the different sectors based on a common data framework. The foremost use cases of European projects and initiatives in the specific sector or at cross-sector level are presented, depicting the current state of data exchange deployments and identifying the necessary actions for the upcoming developments.

Reconstructing evolutionary trajectories of river systems gives valuable insights into the main drivers (i.e. hydro-climatic versus anthropogenic) of their historical morphodynamics. Understanding past and modern adjustments of hydrosystems is therefore a key for appropriate sustainable management schemes. In this respect, the historical evolution (~150 years) of a 6 km dynamic reach of an Upper Rhine sub-tributary, the Bruche River, is thoroughly studied using a wide array of planimetric and topographic data (ancient maps and longitudinal profile, orthophotos, LiDAR). The primary aim is to precisely quantify the lateral and vertical mobility, taking uncertainties into account. Lateral mobility is studied using a specifically designed indicator, the Aggregated Migration rate Index (AMI), which enables precise assessment of planform changes in m.yr-1 on elementary sub-reaches (~100 m). A twofold decrease in mean lateral mobility in the mid-20th century, most probably related to functional channel modifications associated with the installation of an underground pipeline, represents the most striking result. Vertical mobility is analysed through the comparison of diachronic LiDAR data (decadal timescale) and historical archive (secular timescale). From the mid-20th century onwards, an unexpected general aggradation of the riverbed (~0.6 m) has occurred, for which several explanations are discussed (i.e. bank erosion, deforestation, sediment release following weir lowering), though remaining speculative. Overall, our results show that historical geomorphological adjustments are primarily controlled by various anthropogenic factors. As the Bruche hosts one of the highest concentrations of spawning beds of emblematic fish species in the French Upper Rhine, this study lays the foundation for future restoration strategies. Reconstituer les trajectoires évolutives des cours d'eau fournit de précieuses informations sur les principaux facteurs de contrôle (hydro-climatiques ou anthropiques) de leur dynamique historique. La compréhension des ajustements passés et modernes des hydrosystèmes constitue un outil majeur dans l’élaboration de plans de gestion durable appropriés. À cet égard, l'évolution historique (~150 ans) d'un tronçon dynamique de 6 km d'un affluent du Rhin Supérieur, la Bruche, est étudiée en utilisant un large jeu de données planimétriques et topographiques. L'objectif principal est de quantifier précisément la mobilité latérale et verticale, en tenant compte des incertitudes. Un indicateur spécialement conçu, l'indice agrégé de migration (AMI), permet d'évaluer avec précision les changements planimétriques en m/an par sous-tronçons élémentaires (~100 m). Le résultat le plus marquant est la diminution de moitié de la mobilité latérale moyenne au milieu du XXe siècle, très probablement liée à de profondes modifications fonctionnelles du chenal, associées à l'installation d'un pipeline souterrain. La mobilité verticale est analysée en comparant des données LiDAR diachroniques (échelle décennale) et des archives historiques (échelle séculaire). A partir du milieu du XXe siècle, une aggradation générale du lit (~0,6 m) est mesurée, pour laquelle plusieurs explications spéculatives sont discutées (mobilisation des sédiments de berges, déforestation, arasement de seuils). Dans l'ensemble, les résultats montrent que les ajustements géomorphologiques historiques sont principalement contrôlés par divers facteurs anthropiques. La Bruche abritant la plus forte concentration de frayères d'espèces de poissons emblématiques dans la partie française du bassin du Rhin Supérieur, cette étude pose les bases de futures stratégies de restauration.

The study of Burano paleo-lagoon&mdash, Wetland of International Value, has allowed us to better define and extend the reconstruction of the Holocene paleoenvironmental evolution of the paleo-lagoons previously studied, located on the Tyrrhenian coast in central Italy. The investigated area is located in Southern Tuscany near the Burano Lake. The area was investigated by means of field surveys, historical maps, 16 coring, sedimentological, palynological and microfaunal analyses (foraminifera and ostracods), combined with robust geochronological control provided by 52 datings (14C and OSL). The study allowed us to reconstruct the environmental and morphological evolution of the Burano paleo-lagoon during the last 8000 years and to hypothesize a Rise Sea Level (RSL) curve. In this context, 5 main evolutionary phases have been recognized. (1) before 7.5 ka BP in the southern-eastern part, an open lagoon developed, (2) ~6 ka BP a barrier-lagoon system develops throughout the entire area and the lagoon progressively changed from open to closed one, (3) ~5 ka BP the width of the lagoon increases and a lacustrine facies appears along the entire axis of the coastal basin, (4) ~4 ka BP the lacustrine facies shows a discontinuous distribution respect to the previous phase, (5) during the last 4 ka the lacustrine facies disappear and the lagoon turns into a wetland area.

While the history of a fluvial hydrosystem can provide essential knowledge on present functioning, historical context remains rarely considered in river restoration. Here we show the relevance of an interdisciplinary study for improving restoration within the framework of a European LIFE+ project on the French side of the Upper Rhine (Rohrschollen Island). Investigating the planimetric evolution combined with historical high-flow data enabled us to reconstruct pre-disturbance hydromorphological functioning and major changes that occurred on the reach. A deposition frequency assessment combining vertical evolution of the Rhine thalweg, chronology of deposits in the floodplain, and a hydrological model revealed that the period of incision in the main channel corresponded to high rates of narrowing and lateral channel filling. Analysis of filling processes using Passega diagrams and IRSL dating highlights that periods of engineering works were closely related to fine sediment deposition, which also presents concomitant heavy metal accumulation. In fact, current fluvial forms, processes and sediment chemistry around Rohrschollen Island directly reflect the disturbances that occurred during past correction works, and up to today. Our results underscore the advantage of combining functional restoration with detailed knowledge of the past trajectory to (i) understand the functioning of the hydrosystem prior to anthropogenic disturbances, (ii) characterize the human-driven morphodynamic adjustments during the last 2 centuries, (iii) characterize physico-chemical sediment properties to trace anthropogenic activities and evaluate the potential impact of the restoration on pollutant remobilization, (iv) deduce the post-restoration evolution tendency and (v) evaluate the efficiency and sustainability of the restoration effects. We anticipate our approach will expand the toolbox of decision-makers and help orientate functional restoration actions in the future.
