Abstract

The results of background measurements with the second version of the BOREXINO Counting Test Facility (CTF-II), installed in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory, were used to obtain limits on the instability of nucleons, bounded in nuclei, for decays into invisible channels ($inv$): disappearance, decays to neutrinos, etc. The approach consisted of a search for decays of unstable nuclides resulting from $N$ and $NN$ decays of parents $^{12}$C, $^{13}$C and $^{16}$O nuclei in the liquid scintillator and the water shield of the CTF. Due to the extremely low background and the large mass (4.2 ton) of the CTF detector, the most stringent (or competitive) up-to-date experimental bounds have been established: $��(n \to inv) > 1.8 \cdot 10^{25}$ y, $��(p \to inv) > 1.1 \cdot 10^{26}$ y, $��(nn \to inv) > 4.9 \cdot 10^{25}$ y and $��(pp \to inv) > 5.0 \cdot 10^{25}$ y, all at 90% C.L., 22 pages, 3 figures,submitted to Phys.Lett. Abstract

BOREXINO, a real-time device for low energy neutrino spectroscopy is nearing completion of construction in the underground laboratories at Gran Sasso, Italy (LNGS). The experiment's goal is the direct measurement of the flux of 7Be solar neutrinos of all flavors via neutrino-electron scattering in an ultra-pure scintillation liquid. Seeded by a series of innovations which were brought to fruition by large scale operation of a 4-ton test detector at LNGS, a new technology has been developed for BOREXINO. It enables sub-MeV solar neutrino spectroscopy for the first time. This paper describes the design of BOREXINO, the various facilities essential to its operation, its spectroscopic and background suppression capabilities and a prognosis of the impact of its results towards resolving the solar neutrino problem. BOREXINO will also address several other frontier questions in particle physics, astrophysics and geophysics.

Abstract

The prototype of the Borexino detector Counting Test Facility, located in the Gran-Sasso laboratory, has been used to obtain a bound on the stability of the electron. The new lower limit on the mean lifetime defined on 32.1 days of data set is τ ( e − → ν e + γ )⩾4.6×10 26 yr (90% c.l.).

Abstract

The results of background measurements with the prototype of the Borexino detector (CTF) have been used to obtain an upper bound on the neutrino magnetic moment, μ ν . The new upper limit for μ ν from pp and 7 Be solar neutrinos is (5.5×10 −10 ) μ B (90% c.l.) in the Standard Solar Model scenario. This is the first limit on μ ν obtained using sub-MeV neutrinos. The sensitivity of the prototype to the neutrino charge radius and the neutrino radiative decay are also presented.

Abstract

60)Cu and (64)Cu are useful radioisotopes for positron emission tomography (PET) radiopharmaceuticals and may be used for the preparation of promising agents for diagnosis and radiotherapy. In this study, the production and purification of (60/64)Cu starting from (60/64)Ni using a new automated system, namely Alceo, is described. A dynamic process for electrodeposition and dissolution of (60/64)Ni/(60/64)Cu was developed. Preliminary production yields of (60)Cu and (64)Cu were 400 and 300mCi, respectively. (64)Cu was used to radiolabel the hypoxia detection tracer ATSM with a specific activity of 2.2+/-1.3Ci/mumol.

Abstract

A new head holder for the fixation and repositioning of the patient head in PET, CT, and MR scanners has been designed and tested. With this device, a bidimensional correlation between functional and anatomical brain images can also be obtained. Head fixation and repositioning are achieved using the patient's dental morphology as an anatomical reference. With a dentistic material, a mold of the patient's teeth is obtained in a few minutes. The molding substance rests on a plastic support, fixed to the head holder. Each time the patient undergoes a new study, his/her personal mold is used, ensuring accurate head repositioning. External markers fixed on the head holder (made visible in lateral PET and CT projection images, midsaggital MR images, and also on the axial images) make it possible to record and recognize the angular orientation and the position of the brain in the three-dimensional space, to correlate images of the same patient obtained with different neuroimaging modalities, and to accurately reposition patients for follow-up studies. The head holder was tested on several subjects. Fixation and repositioning accuracy of within 2.5 mm were achieved in the three-dimensional space. Orientation accuracy was 1 degree
