Abstract

Cherenkov-type particle detectors or scintillators use as a fundamental element photomultiplier tubes, whose efficiency decreases when subjected to the Earth's magnetic field. This work develops a geomagnetic field compensation system based on coils for large scale cylindrical detectors. The effect of different parameters such as the size of the detector, the distance between coils or the magnetic field strength on the compensation using a basic coil system composed of circular and rectangular coils is studied. The addition of coils of very specific geometry and position to the basic configuration is proposed in order to address the compensation in the areas of the detector where it is more difficult to influence, in order to minimize the loss of efficiency. With such improvement, in the considered simulated system, more than 99.5% of the photomultiplier tubes in the detector experience an efficiency loss of less than 1% due to the effect of the magnetic fields., Comment: 22 pages, 31 figures

Abstract

This study reports the lowest energy structure of bare Cu$_{13}$ nanoclusters as a pair of enantiomers for temperatures ranging from 20 to 1200 K. Moreover, we compute the enantiomerization energy for the interconversion from $\mathcal{M}$ to $\mathcal{P}$ structures in the chiral putative global minimum for temperatures ranging from 20 to 1300 K. Additionally, employing statistical thermodynamics and nanothermodynamics, we compute the Boltzmann Probability for each particular isomer as a function of temperature. To achieve that, we explore the free energy surface of the Cu$_{13}$ cluster, employing a genetic algorithm coupled with density functional theory and statistical thermodynamics. Moreover, we discuss the energetic ordering of structures computed at the DFT level and compared to high level DLPNO-CCSD(T1) reference energies, and we present chemical bonding analysis using the AdNDP method in the chiral putative global minimum. Based on the computed relative abundances, our results show that the chiral putative global minimum strongly dominates for temperatures ranging from 20 to 1100 K., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

This paper analyzes how the real part of the dielectric constant affects the emittance or temperature in some materials. A two-layer configuration was implemented on a glass substrate, with theory and experiment, on a sunny day in Mexico. Furthermore, the transfer matrix method was used as theory, changing the material on the top of the substrate and below a film of zinc sulfide. As a result, for a larger real part of the dielectric constant, the emittance decreased in analytical results, and therefore a decrease in temperature was obtained in the experiment. Furthermore, a virtual dielectric constant was obtained from the experimental reflectance in a bilayer system reproducing this system analytically with one layer having different thickness. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was used to obtain the optimal length of equilateral pyramids on the surface of a flat film by changing the materials to improve the reflectance or decrease the emittance. It was concluded that for a wavelength of the incident source, optimal dimensions of the triangles on the surface exist.

Abstract

There were 46 volunteers on the university campus whose blood pressure (BP) was measured with a wrist digitized oscillometer, on the left side first then the next minute time BP was taken on the right side to see if they are equal values or different in a significant (More than 5mm/Hg) way [1]. In the standing position, that difference happened in 15 measurements of systolic BP and in 17 measurements of diastolic BP. Cases 12, 13, 21, 22, and 29 had both measures different. In laying posture with legs up difference happened in 16 systolic BP (SBP) measurements and in 18 of diastolic BP (DBP). The studied cases numbered 2,11, 12, 13, 21, 24, 29, 33, and 44 had both measures different. In addition, pulse pressure (PP) and mean blood pressure (MBP) were compared, and both these values showed an inverse relationship in regard to the standing and laying postures., Se estudiaron 46 casos en voluntarios en el campus universitario tomando la presión arterial (PA) con un oscilómetro de muñeca, primero lado izquierdo y al minuto toma de PA en lado derecho con la finalidad de ver si los valores son iguales o hay diferencias significativas (más de 5 mm de Hg) de diferencia entre las dos tomas. [1]. Esto fue en 15 tomas de PA sistólica de pie y 17 tomas con diferencia en PA diastólica de pie, de éstos los casos 12, 13, 21, 22, 29 la diferencia fue en ambas. En los recostados con pies arriba 16 casos mostraron diferencias en PA sistólica y 18 en diastólica en éstos los casos 2, 11, 12, 13, 21, 24, 29, 33 y 44 fue en ambas. Así también se calcularon presión de pulso (PP) y presión arterial media (PAM) estos valores mostraron cambios inversamente proporcionales entre posturas de pie y recostada.

Abstract

The expansion of collective self-consumption is set to be a fundamental pillar for the devel- opment of energy-positive communities. In Spain, the regulation establishes an allocation scheme of self-consumed and surplus energy among the participants, based on distribution coefficients. This implies that the members of the self-consumption community must decide (or otherwise are assigned by default, according to the criteria established in the regulation) the distribution coefficients assigned to each of the consumers for the allocation of the distribution of the energy generated by the self-consumption system, as well as for the allocation of the surpluses. In this paper, the behavior of several algorithms based on heuristic techniques will be analyzed, with the aim of achieving an adequate economic optimization focused on obtaining the distribution coefficients that maximize the net present value (NPV) of the collective installation (according to the annual savings from the imple- mentation of the self-consumption facility, compared to conventional consumption). The modeling of the problem is performed under fully realistic conditions, considering hourly consumption data, electricity prices for domestic consumers and irradiation and photovoltaic production. The results obtained show a clear improvement in the economic performance of the plant by optimizing the distribution coefficients, compared to the standard approach corresponding to the default coefficients established in the regulatory framework.

Abstract

We disclose a direct approach to the diastereoselective synthesis of phosphorus substituted N-acylaziridines based on a one-pot ZnCl2-catalyzed Joullié–Ugi three-component reaction of phosphorylated 2H-azirines, carboxylic acids and isocyanides. Hence, this robust protocol offers rapid access to an array of N-acylaziridines in moderate-to-good yields and up to 98:2 dr for substrates over a wide scope. The relevance of this synthetic methodology was achieved via a gram-scale reaction and the further derivatization of the nitrogen-containing three-membered heterocycle. The diastereo- and regioselective ring expansion of the obtained N-acylaziridines to oxazole derivatives was accomplished in the presence of BF3·OEt2 as an efficient Lewid acid catalyst. Abstract

Complete optoelectronic devices present major difficulties to be built by aqueous chemical deposition. In this work, a ITO/CdS/PbSe heterostructure was developed, depositing CdS over an ITO-coated substrate via a chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique. The next step involved the growth of a plumbonacrite film over CdS via CBD, where the film acted as a precursor film to be converted to PbSe via ion exchange. The characterization of each material involved in the heterostructure were as follows: the CdS thin films presented a hexagonal crystalline structure and bandgap of 2.42 eV; PbSe had a cubic structure and a bandgap of 0.34 eV. I vs. V measurements allowed the observation of the electrical behavior, which showed a change from an ohmic to diode response by applying a thermal annealing at 150 °C for 5 min. The forward bias of the diode response was in the order of 0.8 V, and the current-voltage characteristics were analyzed by using the modified Shockley model, obtaining an ideality factor of 2.47, being similar to a Schottky diode. Therefore, the reported process to synthesize an ITO/CdS/PbSe heterostructure by aqueous chemical methods was successful and could be used to develop optoelectronic devices.

Abstract

El presente trabajo muestra una comparación de producción eléctrica fotovoltaica para 20 consumidores residenciales; en primer lugar, cuando las instalaciones están dimensionadas para suplir las demandas individuales de cada usuario de la forma más óptima posible, luego cuando bajo estas condiciones deciden conformar una comunidad energética, y; finalmente se analiza el escenario cuando deciden consolidarse como una comunidad energética y la instalación se dimensiona para la demanda del conjunto de usuarios. El capítulo 2 presenta el marco teórico sobre las instalaciones fotovoltaicas, la clasificación y sus componentes. En el capítulo 3 se desarrolla el marco teórico acerca de las comunidades energéticas, las actividades que éstas pueden desarrollar, ventajas, barreras, cómo son las comunidades energéticas en España y, su marco regulatorio. El capítulo 4 muestra la metodología empleada para el dimensionamiento de los sistemas fotovoltaicos y las consideraciones adoptadas donde se analizan los perfiles de demanda de energía eléctrica de los usuarios y se determina la potencia de instalación en función de la viabilidad económica de las mismas (valor actual neto), que se calcula con el coste de energía eléctrica comprada a la red eléctrica, el coste de la energía inyectada, además de un presupuesto referencial que supone el emplazamiento de las instalaciones y el coste de mantenimiento de los mismos. Asimismo, se calcula la tasa interna de retorno y el periodo de recuperación de la inversión. El capítulo 5 presenta un análisis de los resultados obtenidos para los casos de estudio: sistema fotovoltaico para autoconsumo y sistema fotovoltaico para comunidad energética (usuarios que tienen una instalación fotovoltaica y quieren formar una comunidad, y usuarios que no tienen una instalación fotovoltaica y quieren formar una comunidad). Chapter 4 presents the methodology used for design photovoltaic systems and the considerations adopted. It also analyzes the electricity demand profiles of users and determines the installation capacity based on their economic viability (net present value), which is calculated using the cost of electricity purchased from the grid, the cost of injected energy to the grid , a rough estimate and maintenance price of the installations. Additionally, the internal rate of return and the recovery period of the investment are calculated. Chapter 5 presents an analysis of the results obtained for the case studies: photovoltaic system for self consumption and photovoltaic system for energy community (users with a photovoltaic installation who want to form a community and users without a photovoltaic installation who want to form a community). Finally, chapter 6 presents the conclusions.

Abstract

This paper proposes an analysis of the current regulatory framework for collective self-consumption in Spain. This regulatory framework proposes a model based on constant distribution coefficients for the allocation of self-consumed energy, as well as a constant distribution for the allocation of economic rights corresponding to surplus energy. The main advantage of this model is its simplicity and ease of implementation. Nonetheless, it has the disadvantage that part of the energy produced cannot be used (in economic terms) by the participants in the shared self-consumption system, which limits the economic potential of these facilities and therefore makes them less attractive to new investors. Therefore, this work proposes a techno-economic analysis of the influence of the current regulatory framework for collective self-consumption on the profitability of this type of projects. The analysis shows that, regardless of its simplicity of implementation, the existing scheme is not fully efficient, as part of the self-generated energy is not allocated to the community's consumption or surplus. This means that investors in the project obtain a profitability lower than the real potential of the installation. Furthermore, following the analysis carried out, an alternative distribution scheme is proposed that considerably improves the profitability of this type of projects.

Abstract

Blue cheeses are those whose matrix is veined with a blue, blue-grey, or blue-green colour due to the development of Penicillium roqueforti. There are more than 45 varieties of blue cheese produced worldwide, with some distinct features, although the manufacture process is similar. In addition to P. roqueforti, complex microbial populations interact and succeed throughout the manufacturing and ripening at the cheese’s surface (the rind) and interior (matrix). The microbiota of blue cheeses is made up of a vast array of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. Acidification of the curd relies on the action of lactococci and other lactic acid bacteria (LAB) species. The ripened cheeses’ final quality and shelf-life properties largely depend on the enzymatic systems of the components of the microbiota, particularly on those of LAB, P. roqueforti, and yeast species. Proteolysis is the most complex and important primary biochemical process involved in blue-veined cheeses during ripening, with P. roqueforti being considered the main proteolytic agent. Lipolysis is also strong, originating, among other compounds, ketones, which are the main aroma compounds in blue-veined cheeses. In addition, several bioactive compounds are produced during ripening. The biochemical activities, mainly of microbial origin, are responsible for the sensory characteristics of these very appreciated cheese varieties worldwide.

Abstract

The synthesis of highly functionalized N-hydroxypyrrole derivatives by the formal [3+2] cycloaddition reaction of enamines and nitroso alkenes derived from phosphine oxides and phosphonates is reported. Intermediate phosphorylated nitrones, whose formation can be explained by a conjugate addition of enamines to phosphorylated nitroso alkenes and formation of the five-membered heterocycles, are isolated.

Abstract

Different studies in experimental diabetes models suggest that zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) are useful as antidiabetic agents. However, this evidence was performed and measured in long-term treatments and with repeated doses of ZnONPs. This work aimed to evaluate the ZnONPs acute effects on glycemia during the next six h after an oral or intraperitoneal administration of the treatment in healthy and diabetic rats. In this study, the streptozotocin-nicotinamide intraperitoneal administration in male Wistar rats were used as a diabetes model. 10 mg/kg ZnONPs did not modify the baseline glucose in any group. Nevertheless, the ZnONPs short-term administration (100 mg/kg) induced a hyperglycemic response in a dose and route-dependent administration in healthy (130 ± 2 and 165 ± 10 mg/dL with oral and intraperitoneal, respectively) and diabetic rats (155 ± 2 and 240 ± 20 mg/dL with oral, and intraperitoneal, respectively). The diabetic rats were 1.5 fold more sensitive to ZnONPs effect by the intraperitoneal route. In conclusion, this study provides new information about the acute response of ZnONPs on fasting glycemia in diabetic and healthy rat models; these data are essential for possible future clinical approaches.

The gradual displacement of conventional generation from the energy mix to give way to renewable energy sources represents a paradigm shift in the operation of future power systems: on the one hand, renewable technologies are, in general, volatile and difficult to predict; and on the other hand, they are usually connected to the grid through electronic power converters. This decoupling due to power converters means that renewable generators lack the natural response that conventional generation has to the imbalances between demand and generation that occur during the regular operation of power systems. Renewable generators must, therefore, provide a series of complementary services for the correct operation of power systems in addition to producing the necessary amount of energy. This paper presents an overview of existing methods in the literature that allow photovoltaic generators to participate in the provision of ancillary services, focusing on solutions based on power curtailment by modifying the traditional maximum power point tracking algorithm.

Abstract

In this research, nanoparticles and nanostructured thin films of lead sulfide are synthesized by using physicochemical methods at room conditions or suchlike conditions, at short reaction times; furthermore, is used simple laboratory equipment and a simplified experimental configuration. Both syntheses do not employ, ammonium or ammonia to elaborate PbS. The main used precursors for both processes are lead acetate, as the lead source, polyethyleneimine as the complexing agent, and thioacetamide, as the sulfur source. Acetylacetone has been employed as a dispersant agent to elaborate PbS nanoparticles. While the sodium hydroxide maintains a high pH, to elaborate PbS thin films. The characterizations reveal the existence of PbS nanoparticles whose size is smaller than 10nm and with a band gap of 3.35 eV. On the other hand, the resulting thin film is made up of PbS little crystallites of 22 nm in a homogeneous way and its band gap is 1.85 eV.

Abstract

Nanoscale miniaturization of chalcogenide semiconductors such as lead sulfide (galena) can generate interesting quantum confinement effects in the field of optoelectronic applications. In this work, we developed a process in order to obtain SiO2 nanospheres coated with Galena, as the denominated core–shell system; this process is based on Stober’s method, where the magnetic stirring was replaced by an ultrasonic bath to achieve well rounded and highly stable silica nanoparticles with diameters average of 70 nm. The PbS shell cover presents a thickness of 10 nm around. The nanostructures’ chemical composition, morphology, and optical properties were determined by transmission electron microscopy and UV–Vis spectroscopy. As a result, the nanoshells correspond to cubic PbS, presenting some interplanar distances of 2.95 A and 3.41 A; this nanoshell also shown an optical spectrum shift toward blue and a remarkable increase of 3.75 eV in its band gap, compared with the PbS bulk value. The chemical composition is studied by energy scattering spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis.
