Based on the investigation on the CAH of waterdroplet on surfaces with various static wettability, it was found that the rolling resistance coefficient of water droplet ishighly influenced by the surface pattern as well as CAH. The observed results suggest that the optimal surface patternsshould be designed in order to minimize the rolling resistance of water droplet for the practical applications wheresuperhydrophocitiy is required. Keywords: Superhydrophobicity, Contact angle hysteresis, Rolling resistance, Rolling resistance coefficient

【Bioimaging has advanced the field of nanomedicine, drug delivery, and tissue engineering by directly visualizing the dynamic mechanism of diagnostic agents or therapeutic drugs in the body. In particular, wide-field, planar, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging has the potential to revolutionize human surgery by providing real-time image guidance to surgeons for target tissues to be resected and vital tissues to be preserved. In this review, we introduce the principles of NIR fluorescence imaging and analyze currently available NIR fluorescence imaging systems with special focus on optical source and packaging. We also introduce the evolution of the FLARE intraoperative imaging technology as an example for image-guided surgery.】

This study proposes a simple cost-effective method of optical interconnection with a view to minimizing and overcoming the excess loss caused by the alignment tolerance between optical waveguides in the integration/interface process in order to fabricate a large-area optical circuit layer. To that end, a large-area polymeric mold with a continuous channel structure was fabricated. The fabrication process consisted of fabricating the primary polymer mold by using the original master in the polymer replication process and involved the simple alignment of the replicated polymeric mold so that only some sections overlapped with the original master. The dimensions (i.e., width and thickness) of the cavity of the polymeric mold were identical to those of the original master. When the original master was inserted into the cavity of the polymeric mold after having separated the original master and the polymeric mold, the rib structures of the original master and the channel structures of the polymeric mold could be arranged in a passive alignment. A large-area polymeric mold with a continuous channel structure was fabricated by coating a polymeric solution onto the non-overlapping original master. For this study, a polymeric multimode optical waveguide with a length of 200 mm was fabricated using the original master with a length of 130 mm with 50 straight ribs. The excess loss of the proposed large-area multimode optical waveguide interconnection, compared with the original master-based optical waveguide, was 0 dB at 850 nm.

Abstract To investigate angiographic characteristic features of diabetic choroidopathy, as well as choroidal vascular density (CVD) and fractal dimension (CFD) in diabetic eyes and controls using ultra-widefield (UWF) indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). All patients underwent UWF fluorescein angiography and ICGA. Using imageJ software, CVD and CFD was analyzed. SFCT was assessed using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. The image parameters were compared based on the DR stage and the presence of diabetic macular edema (DME). One-hundred six eyes from 63 patients (59.11 ± 16.31 years; male [%]: 23 [36.5%]) were included in the DM group, and 40 eyes from 22 subjects were included in the control group. The DM group had a mean age of 59.11 ± 16.31 years and a mean HbA1c percentage of 7.72 ± 1.28%. The most common ICGA findings of DC were choroidal hyperpermeability (57.5%), hypofluorescent spots (48.1%). Salt and pepper pattern (19.8%), inverted inflow phenomenon (3.8%), choroidal arterial tortuosity (24.5%), and late choroidal non-perfusion (6.6%) were more common in advanced DR. The CVD, CFD, and SFCT increased as the DR severity progressed. The DME group had a significantly higher CFD and SFCT than the non-DME group (P

We propose an integrated structure that combines chip and fiber array blocks for optical interconnection with a polymeric planar lightwave circuit (PLC) device using the roll-to-roll imprint process. The fiber array blocks and PLC chip of the integrated structure are fabricated on the same substrate, and the alignments in the three spatial directions were established with the insertion of an optical fiber. The characteristics of the integrated structure were evaluated by fabricating a 1×2 optical splitter device. The structure had an insertion loss of 3.9 dB, and the optical uniformity of the channel was 0.1 dB, indicating that the same performance for an active alignment can be expected.

Here, we present a new double-side patterned sapphire sub- strate methodology that improves the efficiency of gallium nitride-light emitting diodes (GaN-LEDs). The light extraction efficiency of GaN- based LEDs was analyzed through the use of a ray-tracing simulation. The extraction efficiency was simulated using patterned sapphire sub- strate LEDs with a variety of shapes, depths, sizes, and spacing. Through the optimal patterning of the various factors, high extraction effi- ciency was realized and subsequently improved upon. The thermal LED characteristics were analyzed through the use of the COMSOL general heat transfer module. The LEDs patterned on the sapphire substrate were fabricated using nano imprint lithography. We found that the output power of the double-side patterned LED was 52% greater than that of a flat LED. The thermal resistance of the double side patterned LED was 9.5 K∕W less than that found for the flat LED. © The Authors. Published by

Teleoperation, in which humans and robots work together to improve work performance, is growing explosively. However, the work performance of teleoperation is not yet excellent. Master–slave systems with different kinematics and workspaces need space-transformation control techniques. These techniques cause psychological fatigue to an operator with poor manipulation skills. In this study, we propose an intuitive master design that focuses on fatigue. Large workspaces reduce mental fatigue; however, they lead to physical fatigue problems. To solve this problem, we reflect the role of actuators in the design, through functional separation using movement and gravity compensation. This study proposes the design and prototype fabrication of an intuitive master K-handler to improve remote-work performance. The K-handler features six degrees of freedom (DoF), an anthropomorphic structure, and a lightweight nature. It has a reach long enough to cover the workspace of the human arm to reduce mental fatigue. In addition, gravity compensation, which can reduce the operator’s physical fatigue during operation, is possible in all workspace areas.
