Abstract

Scattering can rapidly degrade our ability to form an optical image, to the point where only speckle-like patterns can be measured. Truly non-invasive imaging through a strongly scattering obstacle is difficult, and usually reliant on a computationally intensive numerical reconstruction. In this work we show that, by combining the cross-correlations of the measured speckle pattern at different times, it is possible to track a moving object with minimal computational effort and over a large field of view.

Abstract

In hyperbolic dynamics, a well-known result is that every hyperbolic attracting set, have a finite pseudo-orbit tracing property (FPOTP). It's natural to wonder if this result is maintained in the sectional-hyperbolic dynamics; Komuro in [Lorenz attractors do not have the pseudo-orbit tracing property], provides a negative answer for this question, by proving that the geometric Lorenz Attractor doesn't have a FPOTP. Abstract

We derive the Landau-Khalatnikov-Frandkin transformation (LKFT) for the fermion propagator in quantum electrodynamics (QED) described within a brane-world inspired framework where photons are allowed to move in $d_\gamma$ space-time (bulk) dimensions, while electrons remain confined to a $d_e$-dimensional brane, with $d_e < d_\gamma$, referred to in the literature as reduced quantum electrodynamics, RQED$_{d_\gamma,d_e}$. Specializing to the case of graphene, namely, RQED$_{4,3}$ with massless fermions, we derive the nonperturbative form of the fermion propagator starting from its bare counterpart and then compare its weak coupling expansion to known one- and two-loop perturbative results. The agreement of the gauge-dependent terms of order $\alpha$ and $\alpha^{2}$ is reminiscent from the structure of LKFT in ordinary QED in arbitrary space-time dimensions and provides strong constraints for the multiplicative renormalizability of RQED$_{d_\gamma,d_e}$., Comment: To appear in Physical Review D

Abstract

Non perturbative studies of Schwinger-Dyson equations (SDEs) require their infnite, coupled tower to be truncated in order to reduce them to a practically solvable set. In this connection, a physically acceptable ansatz for the three point vertex is the most favorite choice. Scalar quantum electrodynamics (sQED) provides a simple and neat platform to address this problem. The most general form of the three point scalar-photon vertex can be expressed in terms of only two independent form factors, a longitudinal and a transverse one. Ball and Chiu have demonstrated that the longitudinal vertex is fixed by requiring the Ward-Fradkin-Green-Takahashi identity (WFGTI), while the transverse vertex remains undetermined. In massless quenched sQED, we construct the transverse part of the non perturbative scalar-photon vertex. This construction (i) ensures multiplicative renormalizability (MR) of the scalar propagator in keeping with the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations (LKFTs), (ii) has the same transformation properties as the bare vertex under charge conjugation, parity and time reversal, (iii) has no kinematic singularities and (iv) reproduces one loop asymptotic result in the weak coupling regime of the theory., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

We derive the off-shell photon propagator and fermion-photon vertex at one-loop level in Maxwell-Chern-Simons quantum electrodynamics in arbitrary covariant gauge, using four-component spinors with parity-even and parity-odd mass terms for both fermions and photons. We present our results using a basis of two, three and four point integrals, some of them not known previously in the literature. Abstract

Abstract Pulmonary vein (PV) stretch is proarrhythmic for atrial fibrillation (AF). AF patients often report that a left lateral (LL) body position can trigger arrhythmia symptoms. Because the PV myocardium is thought to trigger AF, we hypothesized that the LL compared to the supine body position increases PV wall stress. Functional cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was performed in supine and LL recumbent body position in awake condition in healthy human volunteers (n = 20). Following a change from supine to LL position, the heart moved in an anterior‐LL direction in the thorax. The right superior PV diameter was increased by 19% (24.6 ± 3.1 vs. 20.7 ± 3.2 mm, p = 0.009) and left atrial (LA) volume was larger by 17% (61.7[15.4] vs. 51.0[17.8] ml, p = 0.015) in LL than supine position, respectively. The passive LA conduit fraction (normalized difference between maximum and pre‐contraction LA volume) increased by 25% in LL compared to supine position (19.6 ± 9.0 vs. 15.7 ± 7.6%, respectively, p = 0.016). Local wall stress in the PV regions increased in LL compared to supine position (overall mean: 1.01 ± 0.12 vs. 1.10 ± 0.10 arb. unit, LL vs. supine, position effect p = 0.041), whereas this was not the case in the LA walls (overall mean: 1.18 ± 0.31 vs. 1.21 ± 0.21 arb. unit, LL vs. supine, position effect p = 0.381). In conclusion, a left lateral body position increases PV myocardial stress during the atrial relaxation phase of healthy volunteers. These results have implications for the mechanisms of posture‐triggered AF.

Abstract

Background: Because stretch of the atrial myocardium is proarrhythmic for atrial fibrillation (AF) and a left lateral body position increases atrial dimensions in humans, we hypothesized that left lateral recumbence is a frequent AF-triggering body position in AF patients.Methods: We performed a questionnaire study of symptomatic paroxysmal AF (episodes of AF < 1 week) patients scheduled for a first AF ablation therapy at Catharina Hospital, Eindhoven, the Netherlands and at University Hospital, Bordeaux, France.Results: Ninety-four symptomatic paroxysmal AF patients were included [mean age 61 ± 11 years, median AF history of 29(48) months, 31% were females]. Twenty-two percent of patients reported a specific body position as a trigger of their AF symptoms. The triggering body position was left lateral position in 57% of cases, supine position in 33%, right lateral position in 10%, and prone position in 5% (p = 0.003 overall difference in prevalence). Patients with positional AF had a higher body mass index compared to patients without nocturnal/positional AF [28.7(4.2) and 25.4(5.2) kg/m2, respectively, p = 0.025], but otherwise resembled these patients.Conclusion: Body position, and the left lateral position, in particular, is a common trigger of AF in symptomatic AF patients. Moreover, positional AF is associated with overweight. Understanding of the underlying mechanisms of positional AF can contribute to AF treatment and prevention.

Abstract

The anapole moment of a charged scalar particle is studied in a model independent fashion, using the effective Lagrangian technique, as well as radiatively within the context of scalar quantum electrodynamics (SQED). It is shown that this gauge structure is characterized by a non renormalizable interaction, which is radiatively generated at the one--loop. It is found that the resulting anapole moment for off-shell particles, though free of ultraviolet divergences, is gauge dependent and thus it is not a physical observable. We also study some of its kinematical limits. In particular, it is shown that its value comes out to be zero when all particles are on--shell., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

We investigate the Compton scattering vertex of charged scalars and photons in scalar quantum electrodynamics (SQED). We carry out its non perturbative construction consistent with Ward-Fradkin-Green-Takahashi identity (WFGTI) which relates 3-point vertices to the 4-point ones. There is an undetermined part which is transverse to one or both the external photons, and needs to be evaluated through perturbation theory. We present in detail how the transverse part at the 1-loop order can be evaluated for completely general kinematics of momenta involved in covariant gauges and dimensions. This involves the calculation of genuine 4-point functions with three massive propagators, the most non-trivial integrals reported in this paper. Abstract

The spatial distribution and the population nature of subdwarf B type stars in the galaxy is investigated based on the kinematics of these stars. The orbits of 41 stars have been calculated using a galactic mass model. These are well behaved and 10 stars reach to |z| > 2 kpc. Many orbits are very eccentric, reaching in to just 2 kpc from the galactic centre, or veering out to beyond 20 kpc. None of the stars can be identified uniquely as classical Population II objects. The average eccentricity ECC of the orbits of our sample is 0.24, the average normalised z-extent NZE of the orbits is 0.16, and the asymmetric drift of our sample is -36 km s^-1. The distribution in z shows a relative minimum near z=0 pc and has maxima near z=300 pc. Abstract

Sixty-two centres in 16 countries contributed with 2,694 open fractures cases to an international, multi-centric, retrospective cohort study involving different healthcare settings. The INTELLECT study results show that there are significant disparities on the management of open lower limb fractures internationally. A timely, multidisciplinary, guideline-directed care is a protective factor for developing infective complications, non-union and requiring an amputation.

Abstract

Background & Aims Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a major public health problem, but the prevalence of fibrosis associated with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is largely unknown in the general population. This study aimed to provide an updated estimation of the prevalence of NASH fibrosis in Spain. Methods This was an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, population-based study with merged data from two Spanish datasets: a large (N = 12 246) population-based cohort (ETHON), including transient elastography (TE) data, and a contemporary multi-centric biopsy-proven NASH cohort with paired TE data from tertiary centres (N = 501). Prevalence for each NASH fibrosis stage was estimated by crossing TE data from ETHON dataset with histology data from the biopsy-proven cohort. Results From the patients with valid TE in ETHON dataset (N = 11 440), 5.61% (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 2.53-11.97) had a liver stiffness measurement (LSM) >= 8 kPa. The proportion attributable to NAFLD (using clinical variables and Controlled Attenuation Parameter) was 57.3% and thus, the estimated prevalence of population with LSM >= 8 kPa because of NAFLD was 3.21% (95% CI 1.13-8.75). In the biopsy-proven NASH cohort, 389 patients had LSM >= 8 kPa. Among these, 37% did not have significant fibrosis (F2-4). The estimated prevalence of NASH F2-3 and cirrhosis in Spain's adult population were 1.33% (95% CI 0.29-5.98) and 0.70% (95% CI 0.10-4.95) respectively. Conclusions These estimations provide an accurate picture of the current prevalence of NASH-related fibrosis in Spain and can serve as reference point for dimensioning the therapeutic efforts that will be required as NASH therapies become available.

Abstract

Cryptic transcription is widespread and generates a heterogeneous group of RNA molecules of unknown function. To improve our understanding of cryptic transcription, we investigated their transcription start site (TSS) usage, chromatin organization, and posttranscriptional consequences in Saccharomyces cerevisiae We show that TSSs of chromatin-sensitive internal cryptic transcripts retain comparable features of canonical TSSs in terms of DNA sequence, directionality, and chromatin accessibility. We define the 5' and 3' boundaries of cryptic transcripts and show that, contrary to RNA degradation-sensitive ones, they often overlap with the end of the gene, thereby using the canonical polyadenylation site, and associate to polyribosomes. We show that chromatin-sensitive cryptic transcripts can be recognized by ribosomes and may produce truncated polypeptides from downstream, in-frame start codons. Finally, we confirm the presence of the predicted polypeptides by reanalyzing N-terminal proteomic data sets. Our work suggests that a fraction of chromatin-sensitive internal cryptic promoters initiates the transcription of alternative truncated mRNA isoforms. The expression of these chromatin-sensitive isoforms is conserved from yeast to human, expanding the functional consequences of cryptic transcription and proteome complexity.

Abstract

Esta pesquisa tem como tema a trajetória profissional das professoras da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS. Seu objetivo principal é analisar a trajetória profissional das professoras da Faculdade de Direito da UFRGS, entre o período 1974 e 2017, a partir de suas memórias. Perquire-se, como base para a pesquisa, quais os possíveis impactos das memórias das docentes em suas trajetórias profissionais. Para responder tal questionamento, é utilizada a metodologia científica baseada em entrevistas e análise documental e bibliográfica e de caráter monográfico. Conclui-se que determinadas situações afetam sobremaneira as trajetórias profissionais e que o discurso se repete no tempo com diferentes pessoas. This research has as theme the professional trajectory of the female professors of the Faculty of Law of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS. The main objective is to analyze the professional trajectory of the professors of the Faculty of Law of UFRGS among the period of 1974 and 2017 based on their memories. As a basis for the research, we investigate the possible impacts of the professors' memories on their professional trajectories. To answer such questioning, the scientific methodology is used based on interviews, documental, bibliographic analysis and monographic nature. It is concluded that certain situations influence the professional trajectories and that the discourse repeats itself in time with different people.

38. Passivity preserving moment-based finite-order hydrodynamic model identification for wave energy applications

Abstract

The dynamics of a Wave Energy Converter (WEC) are described in terms of an integrodifferential equation, particularly, of the convolution class. This convolution term, which is associated with fluid memory effects of the radiation forces acting on the WEC, represents a major drawback both for simulation, analysis and control design for WECs. Recently, a moment-matching based method to approximate this convolution term by a parametric model was presented in (Faedo et al. 2018). Such a technique allows the computation of a model that can match exactly the frequency response of the original system at a set of chosen frequencies. Though the models computed by this strategy are almost always inherently passive, the proposed method does not specifically ensure passivity, which is one of the main physical properties of the radiation subsystem. This paper describes an extension of the moment-based methodology presented in (Faedo et al. 2018) which guarantees a passive finite-order representation for the radiation kernel based on moment-matching. Moreover, we illustrate the applicability of the method by the means of a numerical example with a particular WEC.

Abstract

A ortotanásia está regulamentada no Brasil pela Resolução 1805/2006. A pesquisa objetivou refletir e discutir, com contribuições da bioética, sobre práticas de limitação ou retirada de suporte vital em situações de terminalidade. Participaram dez médicos oncologistas de serviços públicos de saúde do Distrito Federal. Um roteiro de entrevista semiestruturada norteou os eixos temáticos investigados. Os dados foram analisados por meio de análise de conteúdo. A quase totalidade dos participantes tinha uma concepção de ortotanásia e de eutanásia compatível com a literatura. Sete médicos conheciam a resolução do CFM e três mencionaram a fragilidade legal de uma regulamentação proveniente de uma entidade de classe. Oito médicos afirmaram que essa regulamentação não afetará sobremaneira a prática cotidiana. Princípios bioéticos, como autonomia, beneficência, não-maleficência e justiça, podem contribuir para a elucidação de dilemas sobre a retirada ou limitação de suporte vital. Orthothanasia is regulated in Brazil through Resolution 1805/2006. This study aimed to reflect on and discuss the practices of limitation or withdrawal of life support in situations of terminality, using contributions from bioethics. Ten oncologists working in the Federal District's public health service participated. A semi-structured interview framework directed the themes to be investigated. The data were assessed by means of content analysis. Almost all of the participants had a conception of orthothanasia and euthanasia compatible with the literature. Seven doctors knew the FCM Resolution and three mentioned the legal weakness of a regulation originating from a professional body. Eight doctors said that the regulation of the issue would not greatly affect their daily practice. Bioethical principles like autonomy, beneficence, non-harmfulness and justice may contribute towards elucidation of dilemmas regarding removal or limitation of life. La ortotanasia está regulada en Brasil a través de la Resolución 1805/2006. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo reflexionar y debatir sobre las medidas de limitación o retirada del soporte vital en situaciones terminales. Participaron diez médicos oncólogos de servicios públicos de salud del Distrito Federal, Brasil. Un guía de entrevista semi-estructurada orientó la investigación. Los datos se analizaron mediante el análisis del contenido. Casi todos los participantes tenían una concepción de la ortotanasia y la eutanasia en consonancia con la literatura. Siete médicos conocían la resolución del CFM y tres mencionaron la debilidad legal de una reglamentación proveniente de una entidad de clase. Ocho médicos dijeron que esta reglamentación no afectará en gran medida la práctica diaria. 48. Dietary and genetic determinants of homocysteine levels among Mexican women of reproductive age

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the independent and joint effects of dietary folate, vitamin B[sub.12] consumption and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms (677C [greater than] T and 1298A [greater than] C) on the circulating folate and homocysteine (Hcy) levels among Mexican women of reproductive age. Design: A cross-sectional, population-based study. Subjects: The first 130 healthy non-pregnant women (aged 16-34 years) who agreed to participate in a reproductive cohort in Morelos, Mexico. Main outcome measurements: Dietary intakes of vitamin B[sub.12] and folate were estimated using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. MTHFR 677C [greater than] T and 1298A [greater than] C polymorphisms were ascertained using the PCR-based method. Serum levels of Hcy and folate were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography and radioimmunoassay, respectively. Results: Genotype frequencies for the MTHFR 677C [greater than] T polymorphism were 21.5% (CC), 52.3% (CT) and 26.2% (TT) among Mexican women. Of the population, 22% had the MTHFR 1298AC genotype, while no individual carried the 1298CC genotype. We observed an increased level of Hcy among carriers of the 677TT genotype, compared to carriers of the 677CC genotype. The highest level of Hcy was observed among MTHFR 677TT carriers with low B[sub.12] intake ( [less than] 2.0 [mu]g/day), which resulted with a significant interaction (P=0.01). Conclusion: Vitamin B[sub.12] is an important determinant of Hcy levels in Mexico. Supplementation of folic acid with vitamin B[sub.12] may be preferable when the MTHFR 677T variant allele is prevalent. Abstract

PubMed: 26787795, Background: Transfusion of allogeneic blood influences outcome after surgery. Despite widespread availability of transfusion guidelines, transfusion practices might vary among physicians, departments, hospitals and countries. Our aim was to determine the amount of packed red blood cells (pRBC) and blood products transfused intraoperatively, and to describe factors determining transfusion throughout Europe. Methods: We did a prospective observational cohort study enrolling 5803 patients in 126 European centres that received at least one pRBC unit intraoperatively, during a continuous three month period in 2013. Results: The overall intraoperative transfusion rate was 1.8%; 59% of transfusions were at least partially initiated as a result of a physiological transfusion trigger- mostly because of hypotension (55.4%) and/or tachycardia (30.7%). Haemoglobin (Hb)- based transfusion trigger alone initiated only 8.5% of transfusions. The Hb concentration [mean (sd)] just before transfusion was 8.1 (1.7) g dl-1 and increased to 9.8 (1.8) g dl-1 after transfusion. The mean number of intraoperatively transfused pRBC units was 2.5 (2.7) units (median 2). Conclusions: Although European Society of Anaesthesiology transfusion guidelines are moderately implemented in Europe with respect to Hb threshold for transfusion (7-9 g dl-1), there is still an urgent need for further educational efforts that focus on the number of pRBC units to be transfused at this threshold. © 2016 The Author.
