This paper investigates impacts of various formations of hysteresis on the stability domain of ferroresonance modes of a voltage transformer (VT). Based on four different hysteretic and two single-valued polynomial models, ferroresonance behaviors of the VT are studied. The hysteretic models are developed based on the Preisach theory. The first hysteretic model accurately duplicates the measured hysteresis loops of the VT in a wide variation range of the core excitation level. The other three hysteretic models represent different hysteresis loop formations. The polynomial models are based on identical single-valued polynomial magnetization characteristics but represent different core loss resistances (i.e., constant and dynamically varying core loss resistances, respectively). All of the models represent the same core losses as the measured value to investigate impacts of hysteresis loop formations on ferroresonance modes, independent of the corresponding hysteresis losses. The studies are conducted in time domain in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. The studies indicate that the VT model, which duplicates the measured hysteresis loops and the measured core loss over a wide range of excitation levels, results in more ferroresonance modes, expanded stability domains, and higher overvoltages. This paper concludes that formation of hysteresis is an independent factor which significantly impacts the ferroresonance phenomenon. Not only is it a single-valued magnetization characteristic but also a generic hysteretic characteristic; if it is not accurately constructed based on the measured core hysteresis data, it can result in significant error in determining the ferroresonance overvoltages and stability domains of the ferroresonance modes. The majority of transmission-line faults are temporary short circuits. The short circuit arc is usually self-extinguishing after opening the transmission-line circuit breakers. High-speed reclosure of transmission-line circuit breakers can improve system stability. As the voltage level increases, arc deionization time increases as well, endangering system stability. Application of automatic single-phase reclosing makes it possible to increase system stability even for extremely high voltage transmission lines. Automatic single-phase reclosing is used to clear single-phase-to-ground faults, which are about 80% of the transient faults. In order to have successful fast reclosing, different methods are used to extinguish the arc. One of the common methods is to use a single-phase reactor in the neutral of shunt reactor, when transmission line is compensated with shunt reactors. As of now, the effect and parameters of this neutral reactor are usually determined based on the steady-state analysis without exact system and arc modeling. In this research work, the investigation of a neutral reactor application is performed for transposed and untransposed transmission lines using transient simulation with appropriate models. Then, guidelines for selecting the appropriate amount for the neutral reactor are proposed. Index Terms--Arc modeling, neutral rector, secondary arc extinction, single-phase reclosing.

This paper introduces an accurate transformer core model, using the Preisach theory, to represent the core magnetization characteristic. This modeling approach provides the required precision to match major and minor hysteresis loops of the model with those of the actual transformer core material. Using the proposed model, the ferroresonance phenomenon of a voltage transformer (VT) is simulated and compared to the corresponding experimental results. In addition, the simulated ferroresonance behavior of the VT based on: 1) the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP)-RV hysteric reactor model, 2) the EMTP reactor type-96 model, and 3) a single-valued polynomial as magnetization characteristic, is also deduced and compared with the proposed model and the experimental results. The investigations conclude that the proposed model provides the most accurate results in terms of the VT core losses and the VT voltage waveforms and their peak values during 1) normal operating conditions, 2) ferroresonance transients and jumping from normal to ferroresonance operating conditions, and 3) ferroresonance steady-state conditions. Furthermore, higher accuracy of the proposed model in representing the hysteresis loop provides the highest and the most accurate bifurcation point and the transient loss when compared with other models. This paper also concludes that major and minor hysteresis loops must be represented in the core model to accurately simulate ferroresonance phenomenon of the VT. This paper presents a new and accurate Current Transformer (CT) model for the analysis of electromagnetic transients, based on representation of core magnetization characteristics using the Preisach Theory. Unlike the existing CT models, the proposed model determines shapes of hysteresis minor loops independent of the hysteresis major loop. This results in a higher precision and more flexibility to fit the model hysteresis loops with the actual core material hysteresis loops of the CT. The proposed model has been implemented in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. As an application of the model, transient behavior of a CT due to a fault and its subsequent reclosure attempts is investigated and compared with the Electromagnetic Transients Program Reactor Type-96 based CT model and the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee CT model. Time-domain simulation studies show that the transient behavior of the CT is significantly different, if different hysteresis minor loop trajectories but the same hysteresis major loop are adopted. This paper concludes that both hysteresis major and minor loops must be represented to accurately simulate performance of a CT for the reported case studies. The magnetic hysteresis phenomenon plays an important role in the ferroresonance behavior of a transformer. However, most existing transformer models for the analysis of the ferroresonance phenomenon either ignore the hysteresis effects or represent it based on the hysteresis major loop and scale it for lower current levels. Such a modeling approach does not reflect the actual physical behavior of the magnetic core with respect to the ferroresonance phenomenon. This paper, based on Preisach theory, introduces an accurate model of hysteretic inductor to represent a single-phase transformer for the investigation of the ferroresonance phenomenon. Based on the developed model, time-domain simulation studies show that even in the case of a single-phase transformer where no magnetic coupling exists between the three-phases, all known types of ferroresonance, including fundamental, sub-harmonic, quasi-periodic and chaotic modes, may occur. The effects of hysteresis and its initial conditions, grading capacitors and transformer winding capacitance on occurrence of ferroresonance and its change of mode are also discussed. An effective robust fuzzy model predictive control (RFMPC) method for secondary voltage control in islanded microgrids (μGs) is presented here. In contrast to the existing techniques, which require a detailed model of μG and an ideal communication network between μG central controller and primary local controllers, RFMPC is synthesized for a non‐linear model of the μG with various time delays, uncertainties, and bounded disturbances. The famous Takagi‐Sugeno fuzzy approach is adopted to approximate the inherently non‐linear model of μG by locally linear dynamics. The Lyapunov–Razumikhin functional method is exploited to deal with time delays. In this regard, sufficient conditions are provided in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Then, a sequence of control laws corresponding to a set of terminal constraints is computed offline. Doing so, the online stage is reduced to solving a convex problem with LMI constraints considering the sequence of constraint sets obtained in the offline stage, thereby reducing the computational burden significantly. Robust positive invariance and input‐to‐state stability property concerning communication network deficiency are then speculated. The effectiveness of the proposed RFMPC is verified via a comprehensive suite of simulations in the MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Load dynamics play an important role in the voltage stability. Grid-side short-circuit faults may induce severe voltage drops at motor load buses. Once the fault is cleared, depending upon its clearing time, the load bus voltage may either return to its permissible range or degrade gradually until it collapses. From the short-term voltage stability viewpoint, the former is a stable phenomenon, while the latter is an unstable circumstance and the load should be shed in order to prevent voltage instability from being spread over the grid. To cope with this problem, this study presents a new under-impedance load shedding (UILS) scheme. A quadratic distance relay is used as the load shedding element. The trajectory of load impedance is monitored by the proposed UILS relay. Following the grid-side fault clearance, if the impedance trajectory enters the load shedding zone and remains inside it for a predefined time, voltage instability is detected and the load is curtailed by the UILS relay. The proposed approach is tested on various networks, including a real power system model. The obtained results approve the efficiency of the proposed UILS scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
