Generating realistic and diverse unstructured data is a significant challenge in reinforcement learning (RL), particularly in few-shot learning scenarios where data is scarce. Traditional RL methods often rely on extensive datasets or simulations, which are costly and time-consuming. In this paper, we introduce a distribution-aware flow matching, designed to generate synthetic unstructured data tailored specifically for an application of few-shot RL called Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) on embedded processors. This method leverages the sample efficiency of flow matching and incorporates statistical learning techniques such as bootstrapping to improve its generalization and robustness of the latent space. Additionally, we apply feature weighting through Random Forests to prioritize critical data aspects, thereby improving the precision of the generated synthetic data. This approach not only mitigates the challenges of overfitting and data correlation in unstructured data in traditional Model-Based RL but also aligns with the Law of Large Numbers, ensuring convergence to true empirical values and optimal policy as the number of samples increases. Through extensive experimentation on an application of DVFS for low energy processing, we demonstrate that our method provides an stable convergence based on max Q-value while enhancing frame rate by 30\% in the very beginning first timestamps, making this RL model efficient in resource-constrained environments.

Obtaining annotated table structure data for complex tables is a challenging task due to the inherent diversity and complexity of real-world document layouts. The scarcity of publicly available datasets with comprehensive annotations for intricate table structures hinders the development and evaluation of models designed for such scenarios. This research paper introduces a novel approach for generating annotated images for table structure by leveraging conditioned mask images of rows and columns through the application of latent diffusion models. The proposed method aims to enhance the quality of synthetic data used for training object detection models. Specifically, the study employs a conditioning mechanism to guide the generation of complex document table images, ensuring a realistic representation of table layouts. To evaluate the effectiveness of the generated data, we employ the popular YOLOv5 object detection model for training. The generated table images serve as valuable training samples, enriching the dataset with diverse table structures. The model is subsequently tested on the challenging pubtables-1m testset, a benchmark for table structure recognition in complex document layouts. Experimental results demonstrate that the introduced approach significantly improves the quality of synthetic data for training, leading to YOLOv5 models with enhanced performance. The mean Average Precision (mAP) values obtained on the pubtables-1m testset showcase results closely aligned with state-of-the-art methods. In this study, we introduce StylusAI, a novel architecture leveraging diffusion models in the domain of handwriting style generation. StylusAI is specifically designed to adapt and integrate the stylistic nuances of one language's handwriting into another, particularly focusing on blending English handwriting styles into the context of the German writing system. This approach enables the generation of German text in English handwriting styles and German handwriting styles into English, enriching machine-generated handwriting diversity while ensuring that the generated text remains legible across both languages. To support the development and evaluation of StylusAI, we present the \lq{Deutscher Handschriften-Datensatz}\rq~(DHSD), a comprehensive dataset encompassing 37 distinct handwriting styles within the German language. This dataset provides a fundamental resource for training and benchmarking in the realm of handwritten text generation. Our results demonstrate that StylusAI not only introduces a new method for style adaptation in handwritten text generation but also surpasses existing models in generating handwriting samples that improve both text quality and stylistic fidelity, evidenced by its performance on the IAM database and our newly proposed DHSD. Deep learning (DL) has revolutionized the field of document image analysis, showcasing superhuman performance across a diverse set of tasks. However, the inherent black-box nature of deep learning models still presents a significant challenge to their safe and robust deployment in industry. Regrettably, while a plethora of research has been dedicated in recent years to the development of DL-powered document analysis systems, research addressing their transparency aspects has been relatively scarce. In this paper, we aim to bridge this research gap by introducing DocXplain, a novel model-agnostic explainability method specifically designed for generating high interpretability feature attribution maps for the task of document image classification. In particular, our approach involves independently segmenting the foreground and background features of the documents into different document elements and then ablating these elements to assign feature importance. We extensively evaluate our proposed approach in the context of document image classification, utilizing 4 different evaluation metrics, 2 widely recognized document benchmark datasets, and 10 state-of-the-art document image classification models. By conducting a thorough quantitative and qualitative analysis against 9 existing state-of-the-art attribution methods, we demonstrate the superiority of our approach in terms of both faithfulness and interpretability. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work presents the first model-agnostic attribution-based explainability method specifically tailored for document images. In this paper, we propose a new word embedding based corpus consisting of more than 61 million words crawled from multiple web resources. We design a preprocessing pipeline for the filtration of unwanted text from crawled data. Afterwards, the cleaned vocabulary is fed to state-of-the-art continuous-bag-of-words, skip-gram, and GloVe word embedding algorithms. For the evaluation of pretrained embeddings, we use popular intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation approaches. The evaluation results reveal that continuous-bag-of-words and skip-gram perform better than GloVe and existing Sindhi fastText word embedding on both intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation approaches, Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1911.12579

Test set contamination, wherein test data from a benchmark ends up in a newer model's training set, is a well-documented obstacle for fair LLM evaluation and can quickly render benchmarks obsolete. To mitigate this, many recent benchmarks crowdsource new prompts and evaluations from human or LLM judges; however, these can introduce significant biases, and break down when scoring hard questions. In this work, we introduce a new benchmark for LLMs designed to be immune to both test set contamination and the pitfalls of LLM judging and human crowdsourcing. We release LiveBench, the first benchmark that (1) contains frequently-updated questions from recent information sources, (2) scores answers automatically according to objective ground-truth values, and (3) contains a wide variety of challenging tasks, spanning math, coding, reasoning, language, instruction following, and data analysis. To achieve this, LiveBench contains questions that are based on recently-released math competitions, arXiv papers, news articles, and datasets, and it contains harder, contamination-free versions of tasks from previous benchmarks such as Big-Bench Hard, AMPS, and IFEval. We evaluate many prominent closed-source models, as well as dozens of open-source models ranging from 0.5B to 110B in size. LiveBench is difficult, with top models achieving below 65% accuracy. We release all questions, code, and model answers. Questions will be added and updated on a monthly basis, and we will release new tasks and harder versions of tasks over time so that LiveBench can distinguish between the capabilities of LLMs as they improve in the future. We welcome community engagement and collaboration for expanding the benchmark tasks and models.

Current datasets for long-form video understanding often fall short of providing genuine long-form comprehension challenges, as many tasks derived from these datasets can be successfully tackled by analyzing just one or a few random frames from a video. To address this issue, we present a novel dataset and benchmark, CinePile, specifically designed for authentic long-form video understanding. This paper details our innovative approach for creating a question-answer dataset, utilizing advanced LLMs with human-in-the-loop and building upon human-generated raw data. Our comprehensive dataset comprises 305,000 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), covering various visual and multimodal aspects, including temporal comprehension, understanding human-object interactions, and reasoning about events or actions within a scene. Additionally, we fine-tuned open-source Video-LLMs on the training split and evaluated both open-source and proprietary video-centric LLMs on the test split of our dataset. This study systematically investigates the impact of image enhancement techniques on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based Brain Tumor Segmentation, focusing on Histogram Equalization (HE), Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE), and their hybrid variations. Employing the U-Net architecture on a dataset of 3064 Brain MRI images, the research delves into preprocessing steps, including resizing and enhancement, to optimize segmentation accuracy. A detailed analysis of the CNN-based U-Net architecture, training, and validation processes is provided. The comparative analysis, utilizing metrics such as Accuracy, Loss, MSE, IoU, and DSC, reveals that the hybrid approach CLAHE-HE consistently outperforms others. Results highlight its superior accuracy (0.9982, 0.9939, 0.9936 for training, testing, and validation, respectively) and robust segmentation overlap, with Jaccard values of 0.9862, 0.9847, and 0.9864, and Dice values of 0.993, 0.9923, and 0.9932 for the same phases, emphasizing its potential in neuro-oncological applications. In this paper, we introduce strategies for developing private Key Information Extraction (KIE) systems by leveraging large pretrained document foundation models in conjunction with differential privacy (DP), federated learning (FL), and Differentially Private Federated Learning (DP-FL). Through extensive experimentation on six benchmark datasets (FUNSD, CORD, SROIE, WildReceipts, XFUND, and DOCILE), we demonstrate that large document foundation models can be effectively fine-tuned for the KIE task under private settings to achieve adequate performance while maintaining strong privacy guarantees. Moreover, by thoroughly analyzing the impact of various training and model parameters on model performance, we propose simple yet effective guidelines for achieving an optimal privacy-utility trade-off for the KIE task under global DP. Finally, we introduce FeAm-DP, a novel DP-FL algorithm that enables efficiently upscaling global DP from a standalone context to a multi-client federated environment. We conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the algorithm across various client and privacy settings, and demonstrate its capability to achieve comparable performance and privacy guarantees to standalone DP, even when accommodating an increasing number of participating clients. Overall, our study offers valuable insights into the development of private KIE systems, and highlights the potential of document foundation models for privacy-preserved Document AI applications. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first work that explores privacy preserved document KIE using document foundation models.

It has recently been shown that adversarial attacks on large language models (LLMs) can "jailbreak" the model into making harmful statements. In this work, we argue that the spectrum of adversarial attacks on LLMs is much larger than merely jailbreaking. We provide a broad overview of possible attack surfaces and attack goals. Based on a series of concrete examples, we discuss, categorize and systematize attacks that coerce varied unintended behaviors, such as misdirection, model control, denial-of-service, or data extraction. We analyze these attacks in controlled experiments, and find that many of them stem from the practice of pre-training LLMs with coding capabilities, as well as the continued existence of strange "glitch" tokens in common LLM vocabularies that should be removed for security reasons., Comment: 32 pages. We present a multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) framework for managing large transportation infrastructure systems over their life-cycle. Life-cycle management of such engineering systems is a computationally intensive task, requiring appropriate sequential inspection and maintenance decisions able to reduce long-term risks and costs, while dealing with different uncertainties and constraints that lie in high-dimensional spaces. To date, static age- or condition-based maintenance methods and risk-based or periodic inspection plans have mostly addressed this class of optimization problems. However, optimality, scalability, and uncertainty limitations are often manifested under such approaches. The optimization problem in this work is cast in the framework of constrained Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs), which provides a comprehensive mathematical basis for stochastic sequential decision settings with observation uncertainties, risk considerations, and limited resources. To address significantly large state and action spaces, a Deep Decentralized Multi-agent Actor-Critic (DDMAC) DRL method with Centralized Training and Decentralized Execution (CTDE), termed as DDMAC-CTDE is developed. The performance strengths of the DDMAC-CTDE method are demonstrated in a generally representative and realistic example application of an existing transportation network in Virginia, USA. The network includes several bridge and pavement components with nonstationary degradation, agency-imposed constraints, and traffic delay and risk considerations. Compared to traditional management policies for transportation networks, the proposed DDMAC-CTDE method vastly outperforms its counterparts. Overall, the proposed algorithmic framework provides near optimal solutions for transportation infrastructure management under real-world constraints and complexities.

Acoustic data serves as a fundamental cornerstone in advancing scientific and engineering understanding across diverse disciplines, spanning biology, communications, and ocean and Earth science. This inquiry meticulously explores recent advancements and transformative potential within the domain of acoustics, specifically focusing on machine learning (ML) and deep learning. ML, comprising an extensive array of statistical techniques, proves indispensable for autonomously discerning and leveraging patterns within data. In contrast to traditional acoustics and signal processing, ML adopts a data-driven approach, unveiling intricate relationships between features and desired labels or actions, as well as among features themselves, given ample training data. The application of ML to expansive sets of training data facilitates the discovery of models elucidating complex acoustic phenomena such as human speech and reverberation. The dynamic evolution of ML in acoustics yields compelling results and holds substantial promise for the future. The advent of electronic stethoscopes and analogous recording and data logging devices has expanded the application of acoustic signal processing concepts to the analysis of bowel sounds. This study explored the application of CNN-Transfer Learning for nondestructive chicken egg fertility detection for precision poultry hatchery practices. Four models, VGG16, ResNet50, InceptionNet, and MobileNet, were trained and evaluated on a dataset (200 single egg images) using augmented images (rotation, flip, scale, translation, and reflection). Although the training results demonstrated that all models achieved high accuracy, indicating their ability to accurately learn and classify chicken eggs' fertility state, when evaluated on the testing set, variations in accuracy and performance were observed. InceptionNet exhibited the best overall performance, accurately classifying fertile and non-fertile eggs. It demonstrated excellent performance in both training and testing sets in all parameters of the evaluation metrics. In testing set, it achieved an accuracy of 0.98, a sensitivity of 1 for detecting fertile eggs, and a specificity of 0.96 for identifying non-fertile eggs. The higher performance is attributed to its unique architecture efficiently capturing features at different scales leading to improved accuracy and robustness. Further optimization and fine-tuning of the models might necessary to address the limitations in accurately detecting fertile and non-fertile eggs in case of other models. Bone drilling is a universal surgical procedure commonly used for internal fracture fixation, implant placement, or reconstructive surgery in orthopedics and dentistry. The increased temperature during such treatment increases the risk of thermal penetration of the bone, which may delay healing or compromise the fixation's integrity. Thus, avoiding penetration during bone drilling is critical to ensuring the implant's stability, which needs surgical drills with an optimized design. Bovine femur and mandible bones are chosen as the work material since human bones are not available and are the closest animal bone to human bone in terms of properties. In the present study, the Taguchi fractional factorial approach was used to determine the best design of surgical drills by comparing the drilling properties (i.e., signal-to-noise ratio and temperature rise). The control factors (spindle speed, drill bit diameter, drill site depth, and their levels) were arranged in an L9 orthogonal array. Drilling experiments were done using nine experimental drills with three repetitions. The findings of this study indicate that the ideal values of the surgical drill's three parameters combination (S1D1Di2) and their percentage contribution depend on the parameters' drilling levels. However, the result shows that the spindle speed has the highest temperature effect among other parameters in both (femur and mandible) bones.

Predicting thermal response in orthopaedic surgery or dental implantation remains a significant challenge. This study aims to find a practical approach for measuring temperature elevation during a bone drilling experiment by analyzing the existing methods. Traditionally thermocouple has frequently been used to predict the bone temperature in the drilling process. However, several experimental studies demonstrate that the invasive method using thermocouple is impractical in medical conditions and prefers the thermal infrared (IR) camera as a non-invasive method. This work proposes a simplified experimental model that uses the thermocouple to determine temperature rise coupled with the thermal image source approach. Furthermore, our new method provides a significant opportunity to calibrate the thermal IR camera by discovering the undetected heat elevation in a workpiece depth.

Code review is considered a key process in the software industry for minimizing bugs and improving code quality. Inspection of review process effectiveness and continuous improvement can boost development productivity. Such inspection is a time-consuming and human-bias-prone task. We propose a semi-supervised learning based system ReviewRanker which is aimed at assigning each code review a confidence score which is expected to resonate with the quality of the review. Our proposed method is trained based on simple and and well defined labels provided by developers. The labeling task requires little to no effort from the developers and has an indirect relation to the end goal (assignment of review confidence score). ReviewRanker is expected to improve industry-wide code review quality inspection through reducing human bias and effort required for such task. The system has the potential of minimizing the back-and-forth cycle existing in the development and review process. Neural networks for computer vision extract uninterpretable features despite achieving high accuracy on benchmarks. In contrast, humans can explain their predictions using succinct and intuitive descriptions. To incorporate explainability into neural networks, we train a vision model whose feature representations are text. With the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) and their ubiquitous deployment in diverse domains, measuring language model behavior on realistic data is imperative. For example, a company deploying a client-facing chatbot must ensure that the model will not respond to client requests with profanity. Current evaluations approach this problem using small, domain-specific datasets with human-curated labels. These evaluation sets are often sampled from a narrow and simplified distribution, and data sources can unknowingly be leaked into the training set which can lead to misleading evaluations. To bypass these drawbacks, we propose a framework for self-supervised evaluation of LLMs by analyzing their sensitivity or invariance to transformations on the input text. Self-supervised evaluation can directly monitor LLM behavior on datasets collected in the wild or streamed during live model deployment. We demonstrate self-supervised evaluation strategies for measuring closed-book knowledge, toxicity, and long-range context dependence, in addition to sensitivity to grammatical structure and tokenization errors. When comparisons to similar human-labeled benchmarks are available, we find strong correlations between self-supervised and human-supervised evaluations. As LLMs become commonplace, machine-generated text has the potential to flood the internet with spam, social media bots, and valueless content. Watermarking is a simple and effective strategy for mitigating such harms by enabling the detection and documentation of LLM-generated text. Yet a crucial question remains: How reliable is watermarking in realistic settings in the wild? There, watermarked text may be modified to suit a user's needs, or entirely rewritten to avoid detection. We study the robustness of watermarked text after it is re-written by humans, paraphrased by a non-watermarked LLM, or mixed into a longer hand-written document. We find that watermarks remain detectable even after human and machine paraphrasing. While these attacks dilute the strength of the watermark, paraphrases are statistically likely to leak n-grams or even longer fragments of the original text, resulting in high-confidence detections when enough tokens are observed. For example, after strong human paraphrasing the watermark is detectable after observing 800 tokens on average, when setting a 1e-5 false positive rate. We also consider a range of new detection schemes that are sensitive to short spans of watermarked text embedded inside a large document, and we compare the robustness of watermarking to other kinds of detectors., Comment: 9 pages in the main body. Automated reverse engineering of HTML/CSS code from UI screenshots is an important yet challenging problem with broad applications in website development and design. In this paper, we propose a novel vision-code transformer (ViCT) composed of a vision encoder processing the screenshots and a language decoder to generate the code. They are initialized by pre-trained models such as ViT/DiT and GPT-2/LLaMA but aligning the two modalities requires end-to-end finetuning, which aims to minimize the visual discrepancy between the code-rendered webpage and the original screenshot. However, the rendering is non-differentiable and causes costly overhead. We address this problem by actor-critic fine-tuning where a visual critic without rendering (ViCR) is developed to predict visual discrepancy given the original and generated code. To train and evaluate our models, we created two synthetic datasets of varying complexity, with over 75,000 unique (code, screenshot) pairs. We evaluate the UI-to-Code performance using a combination of automated metrics such as MSE, BLEU, IoU, and a novel htmlBLEU score. ViCT outperforms a strong baseline model DiT-GPT2, improving IoU from 0.64 to 0.79 and lowering MSE from 12.25 to 9.02. With much lower computational cost, it can achieve comparable performance as when using a larger decoder such as LLaMA.

Current deep models provide remarkable object detection in terms of object classification and localization. However, estimating object rotation with respect to other visual objects in the visual context of an input image still lacks deep studies due to the unavailability of object datasets with rotation annotations. This paper tackles these two challenges to solve the rotation estimation of a parked bike with respect to its parking area. First, we leverage the power of 3D graphics to build a camera-agnostic well-annotated Synthetic Bike Rotation Dataset (SynthBRSet). Then, we propose an object-to-spot rotation estimator (OSRE) by extending the object detection task to further regress the bike rotations in two axes. Since our model is purely trained on synthetic data, we adopt image smoothing techniques when deploying it on real-world images. The proposed OSRE is evaluated on synthetic and real-world data providing promising results. Since the mid-10s, the era of Deep Learning (DL) has continued to this day, bringing forth new superlatives and innovations each year. Nevertheless, the speed with which these innovations translate into real applications lags behind this fast pace. Safety-critical applications, in particular, underlie strict regulatory and ethical requirements which need to be taken care of and are still active areas of debate. eXplainable AI (XAI) and privacy-preserving machine learning (PPML) are both crucial research fields, aiming at mitigating some of the drawbacks of prevailing data-hungry black-box models in DL. Despite brisk research activity in the respective fields, no attention has yet been paid to their interaction. This work is the first to investigate the impact of private learning techniques on generated explanations for DL-based models. In an extensive experimental analysis covering various image and time series datasets from multiple domains, as well as varying privacy techniques, XAI methods, and model architectures, the effects of private training on generated explanations are studied. The findings suggest non-negligible changes in explanations through the introduction of privacy. Apart from reporting individual effects of PPML on XAI, the paper gives clear recommendations for the choice of techniques in real applications.
