Stellar clusters are critical constituents within galaxies: They are the result of highest-density star formation, and through their spatially and temporally correlated feedback, they regulate their host galaxy evolution. We present a novel numerical method to model star clusters as individual units of star formation using sink particles. In our method, star clusters grow via gas accretion and via merging with less massive clusters. We describe the implementation in the radiation hydrodynamics code GIZMO and run a large grid of marginally bound, turbulent clouds of 107 M ⊙ to explore the effect of modeling ingredients on the evolution of the clouds and the star clusters. We find both gas accretion and mergers to be critical processes to form star clusters of masses up to ∼105–106 M ⊙, while ionizing radiation is the main feedback mechanism regulating the growth of star clusters. The majority of our star clusters assemble their mass in 0.3–2.6 Myr, and the most massive ones take ∼10 Myr. By removing high-density gas by accretion, our sink-based cluster formation prescription allows the newly formed star clusters to inject their stellar feedback in less dense environments. This makes feedback more efficient at ionizing and disrupting the cloud than if we were to use a standard star formation approach, indicating that our numerical method is the missing critical step to model the interplay between star clusters and their host galaxies. We use a neural network model and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of HCN and HNC to constrain the physical conditions, most notably the cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR, ζ), in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Using output from the chemical code UCLCHEM, we train a neural network model to emulate UCLCHEM and derive HCN and HNC molecular abundances from a given set of physical conditions. We combine the neural network with radiative transfer modeling to generate modeled integrated intensities, which we compare to measurements of HCN and HNC from the ALMA Large Program ALCHEMI. Using a Bayesian nested sampling framework, we constrain the CRIR, molecular gas volume and column densities, kinetic temperature, and beam-filling factor across NGC 253's CMZ. The neural network model successfully recovers UCLCHEM molecular abundances with ∼3% error and, when used with our Bayesian inference algorithm, increases the parameter-inference speed tenfold. We create images of these physical parameters across NGC 253's CMZ at 50 pc resolution and find that the CRIR, in addition to the other gas parameters, is spatially variable with ζ ∼ a few ×10−14 s−1 at r ≳ 100 pc from the nucleus, increasing to ζ > 10−13 s−1 at its center. These inferred CRIRs are consistent within 1 dex with theoretical predictions based on nonthermal emission. Additionally, the high CRIRs estimated in NGC 253's CMZ can be explained by the large number of cosmic-ray-producing sources as well as a potential suppression of cosmic-ray diffusion near their injection sites. We use a sample of 73 simulated satellite and central dwarf galaxies spanning a stellar mass range of 105.3–109.1 M ⊙ to investigate the origin of their stellar age gradients. We find that dwarf galaxies often form their stars "inside-out," i.e., the stars form at successively larger radii over time. However, the oldest stars get reshuffled beyond the star-forming radius by fluctuations in the gravitational potential well caused by stellar feedback (the same mechanisms that cause dwarfs to form dark matter cores). The result is that many dwarfs appear to have an "outside-in" age gradient at z = 0, with younger stellar populations more centrally concentrated. However, for the reshuffled galaxies with the most extended star formation, young stars can form out to the large radii to which the old stars have been reshuffled, erasing the age gradient. We find that major mergers do not play a significant role in setting the age gradients of dwarfs. We find similar age gradient trends in satellites and field dwarfs, suggesting that environment plays only a minor role, if any. Finally, we find that the age gradient trends are imprinted on the galaxies at later times, suggesting that the stellar reshuffling dominates after the galaxies have formed 50% of their stellar mass. The later reshuffling is at odds with results from the fire-2 simulations. The scaling of galaxy properties with halo mass suggests that feedback loops regulate star formation, but there is no consensus yet about how those feedback loops work. To help clarify discussions of galaxy-scale feedback, Paper I presented a very simple model for supernova feedback that it called the minimalist regulator model. This follow-up paper interprets that model and discusses its implications. The model itself is an accounting system that tracks all of the mass and energy associated with a halo's circumgalactic baryons—the central galaxy's atmosphere. Algebraic solutions for the equilibrium states of that model reveal that star formation in low-mass halos self-regulates primarily by expanding the atmospheres of those halos, ultimately resulting in stellar masses that are insensitive to the mass-loading properties of galactic winds. What matters most is the proportion of supernova energy that couples with circumgalactic gas. However, supernova feedback alone fails to expand galactic atmospheres in higher-mass halos. According to the minimalist regulator model, an atmospheric contraction crisis ensues, which may be what triggers strong black hole feedback. The model also predicts that circumgalactic medium properties emerging from cosmological simulations should depend largely on the specific energy of the outflows they produce, and we interpret the qualitative properties of several numerical simulations in light of that prediction. This paper presents a new framework for understanding the relationship between a galaxy and its circumgalactic medium (CGM). It focuses on how imbalances between heating and cooling cause either expansion or contraction of the CGM. It does this by tracking all of the mass and energy associated with a halo's baryons, including their gravitational potential energy, even if feedback has pushed some of those baryons beyond the halo's virial radius. We show how a star-forming galaxy's equilibrium state can be algebraically derived within the context of this framework, and we analyze how the equilibrium star formation rate depends on supernova feedback. We consider the consequences of varying the mass loading parameter η M ≡ M ̇ wind / M ̇ * relating a galaxy's gas mass outflow rate ( M ̇ wind ) to its star formation rate ( M ̇ * ) and obtain results that challenge common assumptions. In particular, we find that equilibrium star formation rates in low-mass galaxies are generally insensitive to mass loading, and when mass loading does matter, increasing it actually results in more star formation because more supernova energy is needed to resist atmospheric contraction. We use resolved spectroscopy from MaNGA to investigate the significance of both local and global properties of galaxies to the cessation of star formation at kpc scales. Quenched regions are identified from a sample of isolated disk galaxies by a single-parameter criterion D n (4000) - log EW(H α) > 1.6 − log 2 = 1.3 , and are divided into gas-rich quenched regions (GRQRs) and gas-poor quenched regions according to the surface density of cold gas (Σgas). Both types of quenched regions tend to be hosted by non-AGN galaxies with relatively high mass (M * ≳ 1010 M ⊙) and red colors (NUV − r ≳ 3), as well as low star formation rate and high central density at fixed mass. They span wide ranges in other properties including structural parameters that are similar to the parent sample, indicating that the conditions responsible for quenching in gas-rich regions are largely independent of the global properties of galaxies. We train random forest classifiers and regressors for predicting quenching in our sample with 15 local/global properties. Σ* is the most important property for quenching, especially for GRQRs. These results strongly indicate the important roles of low-mass hot evolved stars, which are numerous and long-lived in quenched regions and can provide substantial radiation pressure to support the surrounding gas against gravitational collapse. The different feature importance for quenching, as found previously by A. F. L. Bubbles driven by energy and mass injection from small scales are ubiquitous in astrophysical fluid systems and essential to feedback across multiple scales. In particular, O stars in young clusters produce high-velocity winds that create hot bubbles in the surrounding gas. We demonstrate that the dynamical evolution of these bubbles is critically dependent upon the geometry of their interfaces with their surroundings and the nature of heat transport across these interfaces. These factors together determine the amount of energy that can be lost from the interior through cooling at the interface, which in turn determines the ability of the bubble to do work on its surroundings. We further demonstrate that the scales relevant to physical dissipation across this interface are extremely difficult to resolve in global numerical simulations of bubbles for parameter values of interest. This means the dissipation driving evolution of these bubbles in numerical simulations is often of a numerical nature. We describe the physical and numerical principles that determine the level of dissipation in these simulations; we use this, along with a fractal model for the geometry of the interfaces, to explain differences in convergence behavior between hydrodynamical and magnetohydrodynamical simulations presented here. We additionally derive an expression for momentum as a function of bubble radius expected when the relevant dissipative scales are resolved and show that it still results in efficiently cooled solutions, as postulated in previous work. The presence of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters is now well accepted, however, very little is known regarding how they formed. Answering this question is one of the major challenges of stellar astrophysics, yet of great interest, given the importance of globular clusters in different fields, from stellar evolution to gravitational wave emission and galaxy assembly. We present a series of 3D hydrodynamic simulations both of isolated clusters and at a cosmological scale aimed at probing the formation of globular clusters and their multiple stellar populations. We focus first on the effects of both rotation and Type Ia supernovae on the formation of the second population with particular attention on the chemical composition of the newborn stars. Then, we present the first simulations of the SImulating the Environment where Globular clusters Emerged project aimed at probing the formation of globular clusters through sub-parsec cosmological zoom-in simulations. We use a suite of 3D simulations of star-forming molecular clouds, with and without stellar feedback and magnetic fields, to investigate the effectiveness of different fitting methods for volume and column density probability distribution functions (PDFs). The first method fits a piecewise lognormal and power-law (PL) function to recover PDF parameters such as the PL slope and transition density. The second method fits a polynomial spline function and examines the first and second derivatives of the spline to determine the PL slope and the functional transition density. The first PL (set by the transition between lognormal and PL function) can also be visualized in the derivatives directly. In general, the two methods produce fits that agree reasonably well for volume density but vary for column density, likely due to the increased statistical noise in the column density PDFs as compared to the volume density PDFs. We test a well-known conversion for estimating volume density PL slopes from column density slopes and find that the spline method produces a better match ( χ ^2 of 3.34 versus χ ^2 of 5.92), albeit with a significant scatter. Ultimately, we recommend the use of both fitting methods on column density data to mitigate the effects of noise.

We present results from galaxy evolution simulations with a multiphase interstellar medium (ISM), a mass resolution of 4 M _⊙ , and a spatial resolution of 0.5 pc. These simulations include a resolved stellar stellar feedback model. Our fiducial run WLM-fid adopts 10 ^51 erg for the supernova (SN) energy. Among the remaining seven simulations, there are two runs where we vary this number by fixing the energy at 10 ^50 erg and 10 ^52 erg (WLM-1e50 and WLM-1e52). Additionally, we carry out one run with variable SN-energy (WLM-variable) and run two simulations where only 10% or 60% of stars explode as SNe with 10 ^51 erg, while the remaining stars do not explode (WLM-60prob and WLM-10prob). We find that the variation in the SN energy, has only minor effects: the star formation rate changes by roughly a factor of 2 compared to WLM-fid, and the strength of the galactic outflows in mass and energy is reduced by 30%, with typical values of η _m ∼ 0.1 and η _e ∼ 0.05 (at a height of 3 kpc after the hot wind is fully decoupled from the galactic ISM). In contrast, the increase and decrease in the canonical SN-energy have a clear impact on the phase structure, with loading factors that are at least 10 times lower/higher and a clear change in the phase structure (the energy loading is normalized self-consistently to the initial mass function averaged explosion energy). We conclude that these modulations are driven not by the minor change in SN-energy but rather by the likelihood of whether or not an event occurs when variable SN energies are applied.

Molecular outflows are expected to play a key role in galaxy evolution at high redshift. To study the impact of outflows on star formation at the epoch of reionization, we performed sensitive Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of OH 119 μ m toward J2054-0005, a luminous quasar at z = 6.04. The OH line is detected and exhibits a P-Cygni profile that can be fitted with a broad blueshifted absorption component, providing unambiguous evidence of an outflow, and an emission component at near-systemic velocity. The mean and terminal outflow velocities are estimated to be v out ≈ 670 and 1500 km s−1, respectively, making the molecular outflow in this quasar one of the fastest at the epoch of reionization. The OH line is marginally spatially resolved for the first time in a quasar at z > 6, revealing that the outflow extends over the central 2 kpc region. The mass outflow rate is comparable to the star formation rate ( M ̇ out / SFR ∼ 2 ), indicating rapid (∼107 yr) quenching of star formation. The mass outflow rate in a sample of star-forming galaxies and quasars at 4 < z < 6.4 exhibits a positive correlation with the total infrared luminosity, although the scatter is large. Owing to the high outflow velocity, a large fraction (up to ∼50%) of the outflowing molecular gas may be able to escape from the host galaxy into the intergalactic medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first results from a high-resolution simulation with a focus on galactic wind driving for an isolated galaxy with a halo mass of ∼1011 M ⊙ (similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud) and a total gas mass of ∼6 × 108 M ⊙, resulting in ∼108 gas cells at ∼4 M ⊙ mass resolution. We adopt a resolved stellar feedback model with nonequilibrium cooling and heating, including photoelectric heating and photoionizing radiation, as well as supernovae, coupled to the second-order meshless finite-mass method for hydrodynamics. These features make this the largest resolved interstellar medium (ISM) galaxy model run to date. We find mean star formation rates around 0.05 M ⊙ yr−1 and evaluate typical time-averaged loading factors for mass (η M ∼ 1.0, in good agreement with recent observations) and energy (η E ∼ 0.01). The bulk of the mass of the wind is transported by the warm (T < 5 × 105 K) phase, while there is a similar amount of energy transported in the warm and the hot phases (T > 5 × 105 K). We find an average opening angle of 30° for the wind, decreasing with higher altitude above the midplane. The wind mass loading is decreasing (flat) for the warm (hot) phase as a function of the star formation surface rate density ΣSFR, while the energy loading shows inverted trends with ΣSFR, decreasing for the warm wind and increasing for the hot wind, although with very shallow slopes. We present an analysis of the R ≲ 1.5 kpc core regions of seven simulated Milky Way-mass galaxies, from the FIRE-2 (Feedback in Realistic Environments) cosmological zoom-in simulation suite, for a finely sampled period (Δt = 2.2 Myr) of 22 Myr at z ≈ 0, and compare them with star formation rate (SFR) and gas surface density observations of the Milky Way's Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). Despite not being tuned to reproduce the detailed structure of the CMZ, we find that four of these galaxies are consistent with CMZ observations at some point during this 22 Myr period. The galaxies presented here are not homogeneous in their central structures, roughly dividing into two morphological classes; (a) several of the galaxies have very asymmetric gas and SFR distributions, with intense (compact) starbursts occurring over a period of roughly 10 Myr, and structures on highly eccentric orbits through the CMZ, whereas (b) others have smoother gas and SFR distributions, with only slowly varying SFRs over the period analyzed. In class (a) centers, the orbital motion of gas and star-forming complexes across small apertures (R ≲ 150 pc, analogously |l| < 1° in the CMZ observations) contributes as much to tracers of star formation/dense gas appearing in those apertures, as the internal evolution of those structures does. These asymmetric/bursty galactic centers can simultaneously match CMZ gas and SFR observations, demonstrating that time-varying star formation can explain the CMZ's low star formation efficiency.

The observed rest-UV luminosity function at cosmic dawn ( z ∼ 8–14) measured by JWST revealed an excess of UV-luminous galaxies relative to many prelaunch theoretical predictions. A high star formation efficiency (SFE) and a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) are among the mechanisms proposed for explaining this excess. Although a top-heavy IMF has been proposed for its ability to increase the light-to-mass ratio (Ψ _UV ), the resulting enhanced radiative pressure from young stars could decrease the SFE, potentially driving galaxy luminosities back down. In this Letter, we use idealized radiation hydrodynamic simulations of star cluster formation to explore the effects of a top-heavy IMF on the SFE of clouds typical of the high-pressure conditions found at these redshifts. We find that the SFE in star clusters with solar-neighborhood-like dust abundance decreases with increasingly top-heavy IMFs—by ∼20% for an increase of a factor of 4 in Ψ _UV and by 50% for a factor of ∼10 in Ψ _UV . However, we find that an expected decrease in the dust-to-gas ratio (∼0.01 × solar) at these redshifts can completely compensate for the enhanced light output. This leads to a (cloud-scale; ∼10 pc) SFE that is ≳70% even for a factor of 10 increase in Ψ _UV , implying that highly efficient star formation is unavoidable for high surface density and low-metallicity conditions. Our results suggest that a top-heavy IMF, if present, likely coexists with efficient star formation in these galaxies.

We present the results of a James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam and NIRSpec investigation into the young massive star cluster (YMC) population of NGC 3256, the most cluster-rich luminous infrared galaxy in the Great Observatories All Sky LIRG Survey. We detect 3061 compact YMC candidates with a signal-to-noise ratio ≥3 at F150W, F200W, and F335M. Based on yggdrasil stellar population models, we identify 116/3061 sources with F150W – F200W > 0.47 and F200W – F355M > −1.37 colors, suggesting that they are young ( t ≤ 5 Myr), dusty ( A _V = 5−15), and massive ( M _⊙ > 10 ^5 ). This increases the sample of dust-enshrouded YMCs detected in this system by an order of magnitude relative to previous Hubble Space Telescope studies. With NIRSpec integral field unit pointings centered on the northern and southern nucleus, we extract the Pa α and 3.3 μ m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) equivalent widths for eight bright and isolated YMCs. Variations in both the F200W – F335M color and 3.3 μ m PAH emission with the Pa α line strength suggest a rapid dust clearing ( 0) correspond to sources with E ( B − V ) > 3, which are typically missed in UV-optical studies. This underscores the importance of deep near-infrared imaging for finding and characterizing these very young and dust-embedded sources.

We present the results of 300 pc resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array imaging of the [O iii ] 88 μm line and dust continuum emission from a z = 8.312 Lyman-break galaxy MACS0416_Y1. The velocity-integrated [O iii ] emission has three peaks that are likely associated with three young stellar clumps of MACS0416_Y1, while the channel map shows a complicated velocity structure with little indication of a global velocity gradient unlike what was found in [C ii ] 158 μm at a larger scale, suggesting random bulk motion of ionized gas clouds inside the galaxy. In contrast, dust emission appears as two individual clumps apparently separating or bridging the [O iii ]/stellar clumps. The cross-correlation coefficient between dust and ultraviolet-related emission (i.e., [O iii ] and ultraviolet continuum) is unity on a galactic scale, while it drops at <1 kpc, suggesting well-mixed geometry of multiphase interstellar media on subkiloparsec scales. If the cutoff scale characterizes different stages of star formation, the cutoff scale can be explained by gravitational instability of turbulent gas. We also report on a kiloparsec-scale off-center cavity embedded in the dust continuum image. This could be a superbubble producing galactic-scale outflows, since the energy injection from the 4 Myr starburst suggested by a spectral energy distribution analysis is large enough to push the surrounding media creating a kiloparsec-scale cavity. Precipitation is potentially a mechanism through which the circumgalactic medium (CGM) can regulate a galaxy's star formation. Here, we present idealized simulations of isolated Milky Way–like galaxies intended to examine the ability of galaxies to self-regulate their star formation, in particular via precipitation. We also examine the impact of rotation in the CGM. Using six simulations, we explore variations in the initial CGM t cool/ t ff ratio and rotation profile. Those variations affect the amount of gas accretion and star formation within the galactic disk. To encourage this accretion and better study its dependence on CGM structure, we gradually increase the efficiency of stellar feedback during the first half of our simulations. Yet despite this gradual increase, the resulting outflows quickly evacuate large, hot cavities within the CGM and even beyond r 200. Some of the CGM gas avoids interacting with the cavities and is able to feed the disk along its midplane, but the cooling of feedback-heated gas far from the midplane is too slow to supply the disk with additional gas. Our simulations illustrate the importance of physical mechanisms in the outer CGM and IGM for star formation regulation in Milky Way–scale halos. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present results on the properties of extreme gas outflows in massive (M * ∼ 1011 M ⊙), compact, starburst (star formation rate, SFR∼ 200 M ⊙ yr−1) galaxies at z = 0.4–0.7 with very high star formation surface densities (ΣSFR ∼ 2000 M ⊙ yr−1 kpc−2). Using optical Keck/HIRES spectroscopy of 14 HizEA starburst galaxies, we identify outflows with maximum velocities of 820–2860 km s−1. High-resolution spectroscopy allows us to measure precise column densities and covering fractions as a function of outflow velocity and characterize the kinematics and structure of the cool gas outflow phase (T ∼ 104 K). We find substantial variation in the absorption profiles, which likely reflects the complex morphology of inhomogeneously distributed, clumpy gas and the intricacy of the turbulent mixing layers between the cold and hot outflow phases. There is not a straightforward correlation between the bursts in the galaxies' star formation histories and their wind absorption line profiles, as might naively be expected for starburst-driven winds. The lack of strong Mg ii absorption at the systemic velocity is likely an orientation effect, where the observations are down the axis of a blowout. We infer high mass outflow rates of ∼50–2200 M ⊙ yr−1, assuming a fiducial outflow size of 5 kpc, and mass loading factors of η ∼ 5 for most of the sample. While these values have high uncertainties, they suggest that starburst galaxies are capable of ejecting very large amounts of cool gas that will substantially impact their future evolution. We investigate the connection between the regulation of star formation and the cycling of baryons both within and in and out of galaxies. We use idealized numerical simulations of Milky Way–mass galaxies, in which we vary the galaxy morphology and stellar feedback strength. By following individual gas parcels through the disk, spiral arms, and massive star-forming clumps, we quantify how gas moves through the different phases of the interstellar medium (ISM) and forms stars. We show that the residence time of gas in the dense ISM phase (τ SF), the nature of spiral arms, and the clump properties depend on both the galaxy morphology and stellar feedback. We quantify signatures of the baryon cycle within galaxies using the temporal and spatial power spectrum density (PSD) of the star formation rate (SFR). Stronger stellar feedback leads to more bursty star formation while the correlation timescale of the SFH is longer, because stronger feedback dissolves the dense ISM phase, leading to a more homogeneous ISM and a decrease in τ SF. The bulge strength has a similar effect: the deep gravitational potential in a bulge-dominant galaxy imposes a strong shear force that breaks apart gas clumps in the ISM; this subsequently inhibits the fragmentation of gas and therefore the star formation in the disk, leading to a decrease in the spatial power on scales of ∼1 kpc. We conclude that measurements of the temporal and spatial PSD of the SFR can provide constraints on the baryon cycle and the star formation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Massive, young stars are the main source of energy that maintains multiphase structure and turbulence in the interstellar medium (ISM), and without this "feedback" the star formation rate (SFR) would be much higher than is observed. Rapid energy loss in the ISM and efficient energy recovery by stellar feedback lead to coregulation of SFRs and the ISM state. Realistic approaches to this problem should solve for the dynamical evolution of the ISM, including star formation and the input of feedback energy self-consistently and accurately. Here, we present the TIGRESS-NCR numerical framework, in which UV radiation, supernovae, cooling and heating processes, and gravitational collapse are modeled explicitly. We use an adaptive ray-tracing method for UV radiation transfer from star clusters represented by sink particles, accounting for attenuation by dust and gas. We solve photon-driven chemical equations to determine the abundances of hydrogen (time dependent) and carbon/oxygen-bearing species (steady state), which then set cooling and heating rates self-consistently. Applying these methods, we present high-resolution magnetohydrodynamics simulations of differentially rotating local galactic disks representing typical conditions of nearby star-forming galaxies. We analyze ISM properties and phase distributions and show good agreement with existing multiwavelength galactic observations. We measure midplane pressure components (turbulent, thermal, and magnetic) and the weight, demonstrating that vertical dynamical equilibrium holds. We quantify the ratios of pressure components to the SFR surface density, which we call the feedback yields. Galactic-scale outflows of molecular gas from star-forming galaxies constitute the most direct evidence for the regulation of star formation. In the early Universe ( z > 4), such outflows have recently been inferred from gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) based on ubiquitous detections of OH absorption extending to more blueshifted velocities than [C ii ] or CO emission in spatially integrated spectra. Because these lines are redshifted to submillimeter wavelengths, such measurements require careful corrections for atmospheric absorption lines, and a proper accounting of sometimes large variations in measurement uncertainties over these lines. Taking these factors into consideration, we reanalyze OH and [C ii ] data taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array for five sources where such data are available, of which four were categorised as exhibiting outflows. Based on their spatially integrated spectra alone, we find statistically significant (≥3 σ ) OH absorption more blueshifted than [C ii ] emission in only one source. By contrast, searching channel maps for signals diluted below the detection threshold in spatially integrated spectra, we find evidence for a separate kinematic component in OH absorption in all five sources in the form of (i) more blueshifted OH absorption than [C ii ] emission and/or (ii) a component in OH absorption exhibiting a different spatio-kinematic pattern than in [C ii ] emission, the latter presumably tracing gas in a rotating disk. Providing a more complete and accurate assessment of molecular outflows in gravitationally lensed DSFGs, we suggest methods to assess the precision of corrections for atmospheric absorption better and to measure the source continuum in future observations more accurately.

We present results from a systematic search for broad (≥ 400 km s ^−1 ) H α emission in integral field spectroscopy data cubes of ∼1200 nearby galaxies obtained with PMAS and MUSE. We found 19 unique regions that pass our quality cuts, four of which match the locations of previously discovered supernovae (SNe): one Type IIP and three Type IIn, including the well-known SN 2005ip. We suggest that these objects are young Supernova remnants (SNRs), with bright and broad H α emission powered by the interaction between the SN ejecta and dense circumstellar material. The stellar ages measured at the locations of these SNR candidates are systematically lower by about 0.5 dex than those measured at the locations of core-collapse (CC) SNe, implying that their progenitors might be shorter lived and therefore more massive than a typical CCSN progenitor. The methods laid out in this work open a new window into the study of nearby SNe with integral field spectroscopy.

We analyze the far-ultraviolet (1130−1770 Å rest frame) spectroscopy of 20 young (10 ^4 M _⊙ ) star clusters (YSCs) in 11 nearby star-forming galaxies. We probe the interstellar gas intervening along the line of sight, detecting several metal absorption lines of a wide range of ionization potentials, from 6.0 to 77.5 eV. Multiple-component Voigt fits to the absorption lines are used to study the kinematics of the gas. We find that nearly all targets in the sample feature gas outflowing from 30 up to 190 km s ^−1 , often in both the neutral and ionized phases. The outflow velocities correlate with the underlying stellar population properties directly linked to the feedback: the mass of the YSCs, the photon production rate, and the instantaneous mechanical luminosity produced by stellar winds and supernovae. We detect a neutral inflow in four targets, which we interpret as likely not associated with the star cluster but tracing larger-scale gas kinematics. A comparison between the outflows’ energy and that produced by the associated young stellar populations suggests an average coupling efficiency of 10% with a broad scatter. Our results extend the relation found in previous works between galactic outflows and the host galaxy star formation rate to smaller scales, pointing toward the key role that clustered star formation and feedback play in regulating galaxy growth.

We present the results from an analysis of multiwavelength archival data on the multiphase outflow in the starburst galaxy NGC 1808. We report the detection at 70 and 100 μ m of dust filaments that extend up to ∼13 kpc from the galactic midplane and trace an edge-brightened biconical structure along the minor axis of the galaxy. The inner filaments are roughly cospatial with previously identified optical dust filaments, extraplanar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission, and neutral and ionized gaseous outflows. The 70/160 μ m flux ratio, a proxy for the dust temperature, is elevated along the edges of the cones, indicating that the dusty medium has been driven out of the central regions of these cones and is possibly shock-heated by a large-scale outflow. We establish lower limits on the extraplanar dust mass and mean height above the stellar disk of $\mathrm{log}({M}_{d}/{M}_{\odot })\,=\,6.48$ and ∣ z ∣ ∼ 5 kpc. The energy requirement of (5.1–9.6) × 10 ^56 erg needed to lift the dusty material, assuming a Milky Way–like dust-to-gas ratio, can be supplied by the current starburst, with a measured star formation rate of 3.5–5.4 M _⊙ yr ^−1 over a timescale of (4–26) ξ ^−1 Myr, where ξ is the efficiency of energy transfer. We conclude that a starburst-driven outflow is the most likely mechanism by which the dust features were formed.

We perform a comprehensive CO study toward the Monoceros OB1 (Mon OB1) region based on the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting survey at an angular resolution of about 50″. The high-sensitivity data, together with the high dynamic range, show that molecular gas in the 8° × 4° region displays complicated hierarchical structures and various morphology (e.g., filamentary, cavity-like, shell-like, and other irregular structures). Based on Gaussian decomposition and clustering for ^13 CO data, a total of 263 ^13 CO structures are identified in the whole region, and 88% of raw data flux is recovered. The dense gas with relatively high column density from the integrated CO emission is mainly concentrated in the region where multiple ^13 CO structures are overlapped. Combining the results of 32 large ^13 CO structures with distances from Gaia DR3, we estimate an average distance of ${729}_{-45}^{+45}\,\mathrm{pc}$ for the giant molecular cloud (GMC) complex. The total mass of the GMC complex traced by ^12 CO, ^13 CO, and C ^18 O is 1.1 × 10 ^5 M _⊙ , 4.3 × 10 ^4 M _⊙ , and 8.4 × 10 ^3 M _⊙ , respectively. The dense gas fraction shows a clear difference between Mon OB1 GMC East (12.4%) and Mon OB1 GMC West (3.3%). Our results show that the dense gas environment is closely linked to the nearby star-forming regions. On the other hand, star-forming activities have a great influence on the physical properties of the surrounding molecular gas (larger velocity dispersion, higher temperatures, more complex velocity structures, etc.). We also discuss the distribution/kinematics of molecular gas associated with nearby star-forming activities.

Most diffuse baryons, including the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the cosmic web, remain unmeasured and unconstrained. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) offer an unparalleled method to measure the electron dispersion measures (DMs) of ionized baryons. Their distribution can resolve the missing baryon problem and constrain the history of feedback theorized to impart significant energy to the CGM and IGM. We analyze the Cosmology and Astrophysics with Machine Learning Simulations using three suites, IllustrisTNG, SIMBA, and Astrid, each varying six parameters (two cosmological and four astrophysical feedback), for a total of 183 distinct simulation models. We find significantly different predictions between the fiducial models of the suites owing to their different implementations of feedback. SIMBA exhibits the strongest feedback, leading to the smoothest distribution of baryons and reducing the sight-line-to-sight-line variance in DMs between z = 0 and 1. Astrid has the weakest feedback and the largest variance. We calculate FRB CGM measurements as a function of galaxy impact parameter, with SIMBA showing the weakest DMs due to aggressive active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback and Astrid the strongest. Within each suite, the largest differences are due to varying AGN feedback. IllustrisTNG shows the most sensitivity to supernova feedback, but this is due to the change in the AGN feedback strengths, demonstrating that black holes, not stars, are most capable of redistributing baryons in the IGM and CGM. We compare our statistics directly to recent observations, paving the way for the use of FRBs to constrain the physics of galaxy formation and evolution.

We present a statistical analysis of the local, ≈50–100 pc scale, H α emission at the locations of recent (≤125 yr) supernovae (SNe) in nearby star-forming galaxies. Our sample consists of 32 SNe in 10 galaxies that are targets of the PHANGS-MUSE survey. We find that 41% (13/32) of these SNe occur coincident with a previously identified H ii region. For comparison, H ii regions cover 32% of the area within ±1 kpc of any recent SN. Contrasting this local covering fraction with the fraction of SNe coincident with H ii regions, we find a statistical excess of 7.6% ± 8.7% of all SNe to be associated with H ii regions. This increases to an excess of 19.2% ± 10.4% when considering only core-collapse SNe (CCSNe). These estimates appear to be in good agreement with qualitative results from new, higher-resolution Hubble Space Telescope H α imaging, which also suggests many CCSNe detonate near but not in H ii regions. Our results appear consistent with the expectation that only a modest fraction of stars explode during the first ≲5 Myr of the life of a stellar population when H α emission is expected to be bright. Of the H ii region associated SNe, 85% (11/13) also have associated detected CO (2–1) emission, indicating the presence of molecular gas. The SNe associated with H ii regions have typical extinctions of A _V ∼ 1 mag, consistent with a significant amount of pre-clearing of gas from the region before the SNe explode.

A fundamental question regarding the evolution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies is the identification of the key physical mechanisms responsible for gas depletion. Here, we focus on the study of stellar feedback in isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies by performing numerical simulations using a modified version of the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics code GADGET-3. The Milky Way satellite Leo II (PGC 34176) in the Local Group was considered as our default model dwarf galaxy. The parameter space for the stellar feedback models was explored to match observational constraints of Leo II, such as residual gas mass, total mass within the tidal radius, star formation history, final stellar mass, stellar ages, and metallicity. Additionally, we examined the impact of the binary fraction of stars, initial mass function, dark matter halo mass, and initial gas reservoir. Many simulations revealed recent star formation quenching due to stellar feedback. In general, the gas depletion, expected star formation history, total mass of stars, and total mass within the tidal radius were adequately reproduced in the simulations when compared to observational estimates. However, there were discrepancies in the distribution of stellar ages and metallicities, which suggested that the cosmic gas infall would play a more complex role in our dwarf spheroidal galaxy than captured by a monolithic infall scenario. Our results suggest that currently quenched dwarf galaxies may not necessarily need to evolve within clusters or groups and that stellar feedback alone could be a sufficient factor in shaping at least some of these galaxies as we observe them today.

Feedback from star formation is a critical component of the evolution of galaxies and their interstellar medium. At parsec scales internal to molecular clouds, however, the observed signatures of that feedback on the physical properties of CO-emitting gas have often been weak or inconclusive. We present subparsec observations of H _2 CO in the 30 Doradus region, which contains the massive star cluster R136 that is clearly exerting feedback on its neighboring gas. H _2 CO provides a direct measure of gas kinetic temperature, and we find a trend of decreasing temperature with projected distance from R136 that may be indicative of gas heating by the stars. While it has been suggested that mechanical heating affects H _2 CO-measured temperature, we do not observe any correlation between T _K and line width. The lack of an enhancement in mechanical feedback close to R136 is consistent with the absence of a radial trend in gravitational boundedness seen the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array CO observations. Estimates of cosmic-ray flux in the region are quite uncertain, but can plausibly explain the observed temperatures if R136 itself is the dominant local source of energetic protons. The observations presented here are also consistent with the H _2 CO-emitting gas near R136 being dominated by direct radiation from R136 and photoelectric heating in the photodissociation regions.

The Astro2020 Decadal Survey has identified the mapping of the circumgalactic medium (CGM; the gaseous plasma around galaxies) as a key objective. We explore the prospects for characterizing the CGM in and around nearby galaxy halos with a future large-grasp X-ray microcalorimeter. We create realistic mock observations from hydrodynamical simulations (EAGLE, IllustrisTNG, and Simba) that demonstrate a wide range of potential measurements, which will address the open questions in galaxy formation and evolution. By including all background and foreground components in our mock observations, we show why it is impossible to perform these measurements with current instruments, such as X-ray CCDs, and why only microcalorimeters will allow us to distinguish the faint CGM emission from the bright Milky Way (MW) foreground emission lines. We find that individual halos of MW mass can, on average and depending on star formation rate, be traced out to large radii, around R _500 , and for larger galaxies even out to R _200 , using prominent emission lines, such as O vii , or O viii . Furthermore, we show that emission-line ratios for individual halos can reveal the radial temperature structure. Substructure measurements show that it will be possible to relate azimuthal variations to the feedback mode of the galaxy. We demonstrate the ability to construct temperature, velocity, and abundance ratio maps from spectral fitting for individual galaxy halos, which reveal rotation features, active galactic nucleus outbursts, and enrichment.

We present a new suite of numerical simulations of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM) in galactic disks using the TIGRESS-NCR framework. Distinctive aspects of our simulation suite are (1) sophisticated and comprehensive numerical treatments of essential physical processes including magnetohydrodynamics, self-gravity, and galactic differential rotation, as well as photochemistry, cooling, and heating coupled with direct ray-tracing UV radiation transfer and resolved supernova feedback and (2) wide parameter coverage including the variation in metallicity over $Z^{\prime} \equiv Z/{Z}_{\odot }\sim 0.1-3$ , gas surface density Σ _gas ∼ 5–150 M _⊙ pc ^−2 , and stellar surface density Σ _star ∼ 1–50 M _⊙ pc ^−2 . The range of emergent star formation rate surface density is Σ _SFR ∼ 10 ^−4 –0.5 M _⊙ kpc ^−2 yr ^−1 , and ISM total midplane pressure is P _tot / k _B = 10 ^3 –10 ^6 cm ^−3 K, with P _tot equal to the ISM weight ${ \mathcal W }$ . For given Σ _gas and Σ _star , we find ${{\rm{\Sigma }}}_{\mathrm{SFR}}\propto Z{{\prime} }^{0.3}$ . We provide an interpretation based on the pressure-regulated feedback-modulated (PRFM) star formation theory. The total midplane pressure consists of thermal, turbulent, and magnetic stresses. We characterize feedback modulation in terms of the yield ϒ, defined as the ratio of each stress to Σ _SFR . The thermal feedback yield varies sensitively with both weight and metallicity as ${{\rm{\Upsilon }}}_{\mathrm{th}}\propto {{ \mathcal W }}^{-0.46}Z{{\prime} }^{-0.53}$ , while the combined turbulent and magnetic feedback yield shows weaker dependence ${{\rm{\Upsilon }}}_{\mathrm{turb}+\mathrm{mag}}\propto {{ \mathcal W }}^{-0.22}Z{{\prime} }^{-0.18}$ . The reduction in Σ _SFR at low metallicity is due mainly to enhanced thermal feedback yield, resulting from reduced attenuation of UV radiation. With the metallicity-dependent calibrations we provide, PRFM theory can be used for a new subgrid star formation prescription in cosmological simulations where the ISM is unresolved.

Stellar feedback influences the star formation rate (SFR) and the interstellar medium of galaxies in ways that are difficult to quantify numerically, because feedback is an essential ingredient of realistic simulations. To overcome this, we conduct a feedback-halting experiment starting with a Milky Way–mass galaxy in the second-generation Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE-2) simulation framework. By terminating feedback, and comparing to a simulation in which feedback is maintained, we monitor how the runs diverge. We find that without feedback, the interstellar turbulent velocities decay. There is a marked increase of dense material, while the SFR increases by over an order of magnitude. Importantly, this SFR boost is a factor of ∼15–20 larger than is accounted for by the increased freefall rate caused by higher densities. This implies that feedback moderates the star formation efficiency per freefall time more directly than simply through the density distribution. To probe changes at the scale of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), we identify GMCs using density and virial parameter thresholds, tracking clouds as the galaxy evolves. Halting feedback stimulates rapid changes, including a proliferation of new bound clouds, a decrease of turbulent support in loosely bound clouds, an overall increase in cloud densities, and a surge of internal star formation. Computing the cloud-integrated SFR using several theories of turbulence regulation, we show that these theories underpredict the surge in SFR by at least a factor of 3. We conclude that galactic star formation is essentially feedback regulated on scales that include GMCs, and that stellar feedback affects GMCs in multiple ways.

The correlation between interstellar turbulent speed and local star formation rate surface density, Σ _SFR , is studied using CO observations in the PHANGS survey. The local velocity dispersion of molecular gas, σ , increases with Σ _SFR , but the virial parameter, α _vir , is about constant, suggesting the molecular gas remains self-gravitating. The correlation arises because σ depends on the molecular surface density, Σ _mol , and object cloud mass, M _mol , with the usual molecular cloud correlations, while Σ _SFR increases with both of these quantities because of a nearly constant star formation efficiency for CO. Pressure fluctuations with ΔΣ _SFR are also examined. Azimuthal variations of molecular pressure, Δ P _mol , have a weaker correlation with ΔΣ _SFR than expected from the power-law correlation between the total quantities, suggesting slightly enhanced star formation rate (SFR) efficiency per molecule in spiral arms. Dynamical equilibrium pressure and SFR correlate well for the whole sample, as ${P}_{\mathrm{DE}}\propto {{\rm{\Sigma }}}_{\mathrm{SFR}}^{1.3}$ , which is steeper than in other studies. The azimuthal fluctuations, Δ P _DE (ΔΣ _SFR ), follow the total correlation P _DE (Σ _SFR ) closely, hinting that some of this correlation may be a precursor to star formation, rather than a reaction. Galactic dynamical processes correlate linearly such that ${{\rm{\Sigma }}}_{\mathrm{SFR}}\propto {({{\rm{\Sigma }}}_{\mathrm{gas}}R)}^{1.0\pm 0.3}$ for total gas surface density Σ _gas and galactic dynamical rates, R , equal to κ , A , or Ω, representing epicyclic frequency, shear rate A , and orbit rate Ω. These results suggest important roles for both feedback and galactic dynamics.

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is home to many H ii regions, which may lead to significant outflows. We examine the LMC’s multiphase gas ( T ∼10 ^4-5 K) in H i , S ii , Si iv , and C iv using 110 stellar sight lines from the Hubble Space Telescope’s Ultraviolet Legacy Library of Young Stars as Essential Standards program. We develop a continuum fitting algorithm based on the concept of Gaussian process regression and identify reliable LMC interstellar absorption over v _helio = 175–375 km s ^−1 . Our analyses show disk-wide ionized outflows in Si iv and C iv across the LMC with bulk velocities of ∣ v _out, bulk ∣ ∼ 20–60 km s ^−1 , which indicates that most of the outflowing mass is gravitationally bound. The outflows’ column densities correlate with the LMC’s star formation rate surface densities (Σ _SFR ), and the outflows with higher Σ _SFR tend to be more ionized. Considering outflows from both sides of the LMC as traced by C iv , we conservatively estimate a total outflow rate of ${\dot{M}}_{\mathrm{out}}\gtrsim 0.03\,{M}_{\odot }{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}$ and a mass-loading factor of η ≳ 0.15. We compare the LMC’s outflows with those detected in starburst galaxies and simulation predictions, and find a universal scaling relation of $| {v}_{\mathrm{out},\ \mathrm{bulk}}| \propto {{\rm{\Sigma }}}_{\mathrm{SFR}}^{0.23}$ over a wide range of star-forming conditions (Σ _SFR ∼ 10 ^−4.5 –10 ^2 M _⊙ yr ^−1 kpc ^−2 ). Lastly, we find that the outflows are corotating with the LMC’s young stellar disk and the velocity field does not seem to be significantly impacted by external forces; we thus speculate on the existence of a bow shock leading the LMC, which may have shielded the outflows from ram pressure as the LMC orbits the Milky Way.

We present the Sloan Digital Sky Survey V Local Volume Mapper (LVM). The LVM is an integral-field spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds, and a sample of local volume galaxies, connecting resolved parsec-scale individual sources of feedback to kiloparsec-scale ionized interstellar medium (ISM) properties. The 4 yr survey covers the southern Milky Way disk at spatial resolutions of 0.05–1 pc, the Magellanic Clouds at 10 pc resolution, and nearby large galaxies at larger scales totaling >4300 deg ^2 of sky and more than 55M spectra. It utilizes a new facility of alt–alt mounted siderostats feeding 16 cm refractive telescopes, lenslet-coupled fiber optics, and spectrographs covering 3600–9800 Å at R ∼ 4000. The ultra-wide-field integral-field unit has a diameter of 0.°5 with 1801 hexagonally packed fibers of 35.″3 apertures. The siderostats allow for a completely stationary fiber system, avoiding instability of the line-spread function seen in traditional fiber feeds. Scientifically, LVM resolves the regions where energy, momentum, and chemical elements are injected into the ISM at the scale of gas clouds, while simultaneously charting where energy is being dissipated (via cooling, shocks, turbulence, bulk flows, etc.) to global scales. This combined local and global view enables us to constrain physical processes regulating how stellar feedback operates and couples to galactic kinematics and disk-scale structures, such as the bar and spiral arms, as well as gas in- and outflows.

We present initial results associating galaxies in the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) Ultra Deep Field (MUDF) with gas seen in absorption along the line of sight to two bright quasars in this field to explore the dependence of metals in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) on galaxy properties. The MUDF includes ∼140 hr of Very Large Telescope (VLT)/MUSE data and 90 orbits of Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/G141M grism observations alongside VLT/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph spectroscopy of the two quasars and several bands of HST imaging. We compare the metal absorption around galaxies in this field as a function of impact parameter, azimuthal angle, and galaxy metallicity across redshifts 0.5 < z < 3.2. Due to the depth of our data and a large field of view, our analysis extends to low stellar masses (600 kpc). We find a correlation between the absorber equivalent width and the number of nearby galaxies, but do not detect a significant anticorrelation with the impact parameter. Our full sample does not show any significant change in absorber incidence as a function of azimuthal angle. However, we do find a bimodality in the azimuthal angle distribution of absorption at small impact parameters (

Circumgalactic dust grains trace the circulation of mass and metals between star-forming regions and gaseous galactic halos, giving insight into feedback and tidal stripping processes. We perform a search for ultraviolet (UV) reflection nebulae produced by extraplanar dust around 551 nearby ( D < 100 Mpc), edge-on disk galaxies using archival near-ultraviolet and far-ultraviolet images from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), accounting for the point-spread function (FWHM = 4″–5″). We detect extraplanar emission ubiquitously in stacks of galaxies binned by morphology and star formation rate, with scale heights of h _h = 1–2.3 kpc and ≈10% of the total (reddened) flux in the galaxy found beyond the B -band isophotal level of μ _B = 25 mag arcsec ^−2 . This emission is detected in 7% of the individual galaxies, and an additional one-third have at least 5% of their total flux found beyond μ _B = 25 mag arcsec ^−2 in a disk component. The extraplanar luminosities and colors are consistent with reflection nebulae rather than stellar halos and indicate that, on average, disk galaxies have an extraplanar dust mass of 5%–15% of that in their interstellar medium. This suggests that recycled material composes at least a third of the inner circumgalactic medium ( R < 10 kpc) in ∼ L * galaxies.

Traditional star formation subgrid models implemented in cosmological galaxy formation simulations, such as that of V. Springel & L. Hernquist (hereafter SH03), employ adjustable parameters to satisfy constraints measured in the local Universe. In recent years, however, theory and spatially resolved simulations of the turbulent, multiphase, star-forming interstellar medium (ISM) have begun to produce new first-principles models, which when fully developed can replace traditional subgrid prescriptions. This approach has advantages of being physically motivated and predictive rather than empirically tuned, and allowing for varying environmental conditions rather than being tied to local-Universe conditions. As a prototype of this new approach, by combining calibrations from the TIGRESS numerical framework with the pressure-regulated feedback-modulated (PRFM) theory, simple formulae can be obtained for both the gas depletion time and an effective equation of state. Considering galaxies in TNG50, we compare the “native” simulation outputs with postprocessed predictions from PRFM. At TNG50 resolution, the total midplane pressure is nearly equal to the total ISM weight, indicating that galaxies in TNG50 are close to satisfying vertical equilibrium. The measured gas scale height is also close to theoretical equilibrium predictions. The slopes of the effective equations of states are similar, but with effective velocity dispersion normalization from SH03 slightly larger than that from current TIGRESS simulations. Because of this and the decrease in PRFM feedback yield at high pressure, the PRFM model predicts shorter gas depletion times than the SH03 model at high densities and redshift. Our results represent a first step toward implementing new, numerically calibrated subgrid algorithms in cosmological galaxy formation simulations.

We introduce our new cosmological simulation data set CROCODILE, executed using the GADGET4-Osaka smoothed particle hydrodynamics code. This simulation incorporates an updated supernova (SN) feedback model of Y. Oku et al. and an active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback model. A key innovation in our SN feedback model is the integration of a metallicity- and redshift-dependent, top-heavy initial mass function. Our SN model introduces a new consideration that results in an order of magnitude difference in the energy injection rate per unit stellar mass formed at high redshift. The CROCODILE data set is comprehensive, encompassing a variety of runs with diverse feedback parameters. This allows for an in-depth exploration of the relative impacts of different feedback processes in galactic evolution. Our initial comparisons with observational data, spanning the galaxy stellar mass function, the star formation main sequence, and the mass–metallicity relation, show promising agreement, especially for the Fiducial run. These results establish a solid foundation for our future work. We find that SN feedback is a key driver in the chemical enrichment of the intergalactic medium (IGM). Additionally, the AGN feedback creates metal-rich, bipolar outflows that extend and enrich the circumgalactic medium and IGM over a few Mpc scales.

Recent numerical simulations have shown that the unstable disk within the central regime of the primordial gas cloud fragments to form multiple protostars on several scales. Their evolution depends on the mass accretion phenomenon, interaction with the surrounding medium and radiative feedback respectively. In this work, we use a fast semianalytical framework in order to model multiple protostars within a rotating cloud, where the mass accretion is estimated via a Bondi–Hoyle flow and the feedback process is approximated through radiation pressure. We observe that while some of the evolving protostars possibly grow massive (≈1–75 M _⊙ ) via accretion and mergers, a fraction of them (≈20%) are likely to be ejected from the parent cloud with a mass corresponding to M _* ≲ 0.8 M _⊙ . These low-mass protostars may be considered as the potential candidates to enter the zero-age-main-sequence phase and possibly survive until the present epoch.

The gas-phase velocity dispersions in disk galaxies, which trace turbulence in the interstellar medium, are observed to increase with lookback time. However, the mechanisms that set this rise in turbulence are observationally poorly constrained. To address this, we combine kiloparsec-scale Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of CO(3−2) and CO(4−3) with Hubble Space Telescope observations of H α to characterize the molecular gas and star formation properties of seven local analogs of main-sequence galaxies at z ∼ 1–2, drawn from the DYNAMO sample. Investigating the “molecular gas main sequence” on kiloparsec scales, we find that galaxies in our sample are more gas-rich than local star-forming galaxies at all disk positions. We measure beam-smearing-corrected molecular gas velocity dispersions and relate them to the molecular gas and star formation rate surface densities. Despite being relatively nearby ( z ∼ 0.1), DYNAMO galaxies exhibit high velocity dispersions and gas and star formation rate surface densities throughout their disks, when compared to local star-forming samples. Comparing these measurements to predictions from star formation theory, we find very good agreements with the latest feedback-regulated star formation models. However, we find that theories that combine dissipation of gravitational energy from radial gas transport with feedback overestimate the observed molecular gas velocity dispersions.

Stellar winds from massive stars may be significant sources of cosmic rays (CRs). To investigate this connection, we report a detailed study of gamma-ray emission near the young Milky Way star cluster (≈0.5 Myr old) in the star-forming region RCW 38 and compare this emission to its stellar wind properties and diffuse X-ray emission. Using 15 yr of Fermi-LAT data in the 0.2–300 GeV band, we find a significant ( σ > 22) detection coincident with the star cluster, producing a total gamma-ray luminosity (extrapolated over 0.1–500 GeV) of L _γ =(2.66 ± 0.92) × 10 ^34 erg s ^−1 adopting a power-law spectral model (Γ = 2.34 ± 0.04). Using an empirical relationship and STARBURST99 , we estimate the total wind power to be 8 × 10 ^36 erg s ^−1 , corresponding to a CR acceleration efficiency of η _CR ≃ 0.4 for an assumed diffusion coefficient consistent with D = 10 ^28 cm ^2 s ^−1 . Alternatively, a lower acceleration efficiency of 0.1 can produce this L _γ if the diffusion coefficient is smaller, D ≃ 2.5 × 10 ^27 cm ^2 s ^−1 . Additionally, we analyze Chandra X-ray data from the region and compare the hot-gas pressure to the CR pressure. We find the former is 4 orders of magnitude greater, suggesting that the CR pressure is not dynamically important relative to stellar winds. As RCW 38 is too young for supernovae to have occurred, the high CR acceleration efficiency in RCW 38 demonstrates that stellar winds may be an important source of Galactic CRs.

High-velocity outflows are ubiquitous in compact, massive ( M _* ∼ 10 ^11 M _⊙ ), z ∼ 0.5 galaxies with extreme star formation surface densities (Σ _SFR ∼ 2000 M _⊙ yr ^−1 kpc ^−2 ). We have previously detected and characterized these outflows using Mg ii absorption lines. To probe their full extent, we present Keck/KCWI integral field spectroscopy of the [O ii ] and Mg ii emission nebulae surrounding all of the 12 galaxies in this study. We find that [O ii ] is more effective than Mg ii in tracing low surface brightness, extended emission in these galaxies. The [O ii ] nebulae are spatially extended beyond the stars, with radial extent R _90 between 10 and 40 kpc. The nebulae exhibit nongravitational motions, indicating galactic outflows with maximum blueshifted velocities ranging from −335 to −1920 km s ^−1 . We present a high-resolution view of bubbles within the Phantom Galaxy (NGC 628), a nearby (∼10 Mpc), star-forming (∼2 M _⊙ yr ^−1 ), face-on ( i ∼ 9°) grand-design spiral galaxy. With new data obtained as part of the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS)-JWST treasury program, we perform a detailed case study of two regions of interest, one of which contains the largest and most prominent bubble in the galaxy (the Phantom Void, over 1 kpc in diameter), and the other being a smaller region that may be the precursor to such a large bubble (the Precursor Phantom Void). When comparing to matched-resolution H α observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, we see that the ionized gas is brightest in the shells of both bubbles, and is coincident with the youngest (∼1 Myr) and most massive (∼10 ^5 M _⊙ ) stellar associations. We also find an older generation (∼20 Myr) of stellar associations is present within the bubble of the Phantom Void. From our kinematic analysis of the H I , H _2 (CO), and H ii gas across the Phantom Void, we infer a high expansion speed of around 15 to 50 km s ^−1 . The large size and high expansion speed of the Phantom Void suggest that the driving mechanism is sustained stellar feedback due to multiple mechanisms, where early feedback first cleared a bubble (as we observe now in the Precursor Phantom Void), and since then supernovae have been exploding within the cavity and have accelerated the shell. Finally, comparison to simulations shows a striking resemblance to our JWST observations, and suggests that such large-scale, stellar-feedback-driven bubbles should be common within other galaxies.

Using a recently developed technique to estimate gas temperatures ( T _SF ) in star-forming regions from large photometric surveys, we propose a diagram, analogous to the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram for individual stars, to probe the evolution of individual galaxies. On this T _SF -sSFR (specific star formation rate) diagram, a small fraction of star-forming galaxies appear to be dominated by different feedback mechanisms than typical star-forming galaxies. These galaxies generically have younger stellar populations and lower stellar masses and increase in relative abundance toward higher redshifts, so we argue that these objects are in an earlier stage of galactic star formation. Further, Hubble observations find that these “core-forming” galaxies also exhibit distinct morphology and that tracks on the T _SF -sSFR diagram are also a morphological sequence. Thus, unlike starburst phases which can be triggered environmentally, these earliest core-forming galaxies appear to be a stage that typical galaxies go through early in their star formation history. We therefore argue that most galaxies first go through a core formation stage, then subsequently disk formation, and finally become quiescent.

The first JWST observations of nearby galaxies have unveiled a rich population of bubbles that trace the stellar-feedback mechanisms responsible for their creation. Studying these bubbles therefore allows us to chart the interaction between stellar feedback and the interstellar medium, and the larger galactic flows needed to regulate star formation processes globally. We present the first catalog of bubbles in NGC 628, visually identified using Mid-Infrared Instrument F770W Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS)–JWST observations, and use them to statistically evaluate bubble characteristics. We classify 1694 structures as bubbles with radii between 6 and 552 pc. Of these, 31% contain at least one smaller bubble at their edge, indicating that previous generations of star formation have a local impact on where new stars form. On large scales, most bubbles lie near a spiral arm, and their radii increase downstream compared to upstream. Furthermore, bubbles are elongated in a similar direction to the spiral-arm ridgeline. These azimuthal trends demonstrate that star formation is intimately connected to the spiral-arm passage. Finally, the bubble size distribution follows a power law of index p = −2.2 ± 0.1, which is slightly shallower than the theoretical value by 1–3.5 σ that did not include bubble mergers. The fraction of bubbles identified within the shells of larger bubbles suggests that bubble merging is a common process. Our analysis therefore allows us to quantify the number of star-forming regions that are influenced by an earlier generation, and the role feedback processes have in setting the global star formation rate. With the full PHANGS–JWST sample, we can do this for more galaxies.

We compare embedded young massive star clusters (YMCs) to (sub-)millimeter line observations tracing the excitation and dissociation of molecular gas in the starburst ring of NGC 1365. This galaxy hosts one of the strongest nuclear starbursts and richest populations of YMCs within 20 Mpc. Here we combine near-/mid-IR PHANGS–JWST imaging with new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array multi- J CO (1–0, 2–1 and 4–3) and [ C i ] (1–0) mapping, which we use to trace CO excitation via R _42 = I _CO(4−3) / I _CO(2−1) and R _21 = I _CO(2−1) / I _CO(1−0) and dissociation via R _CICO = I _[CI](1−0) / I _CO(2−1) at 330 pc resolution. We find that the gas flowing into the starburst ring from northeast to southwest appears strongly affected by stellar feedback, showing decreased excitation (lower R _42 ) and increased signatures of dissociation (higher R _CICO ) in the downstream regions. There, radiative-transfer modeling suggests that the molecular gas density decreases and temperature and [CI/CO] abundance ratio increase. We compare R _42 and R _CICO with local conditions across the regions and find that both correlate with near-IR 2 μ m emission tracing the YMCs and with both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (11.3 μ m) and dust continuum (21 μ m) emission. In general, R _CICO exhibits ∼0.1 dex tighter correlations than R _42 , suggesting C i to be a more sensitive tracer of changing physical conditions in the NGC 1365 starburst than CO (4–3). Our results are consistent with a scenario where gas flows into the two arm regions along the bar, becomes condensed/shocked, forms YMCs, and then these YMCs heat and dissociate the gas.

We use the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys to obtain the first spatially resolved, nebular imaging in the light of C iv λ λ 1548, 1551 by using the F150LP and F165LP filters. These observations of the local starburst Mrk 71 in NGC 2366 show emission apparently originating within the interior cavity around the dominant super star cluster (SSC), Knot A. Together with imaging in He ii λ 4686 and supporting Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph far-ultraviolet spectroscopy, the morphology and intensity of the C iv nebular surface brightness and the C iv /He ii ratio map provide direct evidence that the mechanical feedback is likely dominated by catastrophic radiative cooling, which strongly disrupts adiabatic superbubble evolution. The implied extreme mass loading and low kinetic efficiency of the cluster wind are reasonably consistent with the wind energy budget, which is probably enhanced by radiation pressure. In contrast, the Knot B SSC lies within a well-defined superbubble with associated soft X-rays and He ii λ 1640 emission, which are signatures of adiabatic, energy-driven feedback from a supernova-driven outflow. This system lacks clear evidence of C iv from the limb-brightened shell, as expected for this model, but the observations may not be deep enough to confirm its presence. We also detect a small C iv -emitting object that is likely an embedded compact H ii region. Its C iv emission may indicate the presence of very massive stars (>100 M _⊙ ) or strongly pressure-confined stellar feedback.
