Biomass waste energy recovery is a significant method for recycling energy from waste and capturing it for use in renewable energy sources. The abundance of brewing byproducts, such as brewery spent grain (BSG) and brewery wastewater sludge (BWWS), as well as their high carbon concentrations gives these wastes energy potential. With 20% molasses utilized as a binding agent to maximize the high caloric value of the briquette, this study sought to examine the quality of mixed briquettes made from BSG and BWWS. In order to make composite briquettes with a maximum caloric content of 19.94 MJ/kg, the ideal conditions were chosen, which included a temperature of 350°C, a production period of 60 min, and a 75% BSG mixing ratio. It can be compared to sawdust briquettes, which have a calorific value of 22.88 MJ/kg, by looking at the calorific value of densified with pressure 100 bar for mixed carbonized briquettes vs mixed noncarbonized briquettes (21.13 MJ/kg). The value of R2 was 0.9607 and indicated that 96.07% of the total validation in the calorific value correlation between experimental and predicted values. The finding of the study showed that the efficiency of the quadratic model in fitting the data would be higher under the conditions of the experiment. Based on ISO 17225‐6 fuel quality classes and specifications for graded nonwoody pellets, the study concluded that using BSG and BWWS as alternative energy sources meets those requirements. Background: In this study, individual methanogenic (anaerobic), granular biofilms were used as true community replicates to assess whole-microbial-community responses to environmental cues. The aggregates were sourced from a lab-scale, engineered, biological wastewater treatment system, were size-separated, and the largest granules were individually subjected to controlled environmental cues in micro-batch reactors (μBRs). Results: Individual granules were identical with respect to the structure of the active community based on cDNA analysis. Additionally, it was observed that the active microbial community of individual granules, at the depth of 16S rRNA gene sequencing, produced reproducible responses to environmental changes in pH, temperature, substrate, and trace-metal supplementation. We identified resilient and susceptible taxa associated with each environmental condition tested, as well as selected specialists, whose niche preferences span the entire trophic chain required for the complete anaerobic degradation of organic matter. Conclusions: We found that single anaerobic granules can be considered highly-replicated whole-ecosystems with potential usefulness for the field of microbial ecology. Additionally, they act as the smallest whole-community unit within the meta-community of an engineered bioreactor. When subjected to various environmental cues, anaerobic granules responded reproducibly allowing for rare or unique opportunities for high-throughput studies testing whole-community responses to a wide range of environmental conditions. N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) is an organic solvent with stable chemical properties and high boiling point. Based on its good solubility, DMF is widely used in synthetic textile, leather, electronics, pharmaceutical and pesticide industries. However, the DMF pollutes the environment and does harm to human liver function, kidney function, and nerve function. Herein, an efficient DMF-degrading strain, DM175A1-1, was isolated and identified as Paracoccus sulfuroxidans. This strain can use DMF as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Whole-genome sequencing of strain DM175A1-1 revealed that it has a 3.99-Mbp chromosome a 120-kbp plasmid1 and a 40-kbp plasmid2. The chromosome specifically harbors the dmfA1 and dmfA2 essential for the initial steps of DMF degradation. And it also carries the some part of genes facilitating subsequent methylotrophic metabolism and glutathione-dependent pathway. Through further DMF tolerance degradation experiments, DM175A1-1 can tolerate DMF concentrations up to 10,000 mg/L, whereas the majority of Paracoccus strains could only show degradation activity below 1,000 mg/L. And the efficiency of organic nitrogen conversion to NH3-N in DMF can reach 99.0% when the hydraulic retention time (HRT) is controlled at 5 days. Meanwhile, it showed a significant degradation effect at a pharmaceutical enterprise in Zhejiang Province with high concentration of DMF wastewater. This study provides a new strain Paracoccus sulfuroxidans DM175A1-1 which shows a significant influence on DMF degradation, and reveals the characterization on its DMF degradation. The objective was to evaluate the biosolids as an alternative source of nutrients in the production of chrysanthemums by adding increasing doses to the cultivation substrate. The experimental design was in blocks with 6 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments consisted of the mixture (commercial substrate + biosolid) at the concentrations: 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of biosolid + two controls (100% of biosolid and 100% of substrate). The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse for 90 days. Physiological parameters, number of flower buds, dry biomass and nutrient accumulation were evaluated. Physiological parameters were evaluated using the Infrared Gas Analyzer. The number of flower buds was evaluated by counting. Biomass was determined after drying the structures and then calculated the accumulation of nutrients. A total of 90 plants were evaluated. Concentrations of up to 40% of biosolid promoted a greater number of flower buds, dry biomass and nutrient accumulation. Concentrations above 60% lower number of buds, biomass increment and nutrient accumulation. It is concluded that the biosolid has potential as an alternative source of nutrients in the cultivation of chrysanthemums, indicating concentrations of up to 40% and the nutrient content of each batch generated must be verified. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contribute to the release of microplastics into the environment. While the removal efficiency of MPs in WWTPs can reach up to 99.9 %, the highest amount of microplastics is retained in the sludge. Anaerobic digestion, one of the most promising and common processes, can help reduce sludge volume and odour, and due to the formation of biogas, mainly consisting of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), can help decrease the operating costs of WWTPs. A test measuring the inhibition of biogas production using the OxiTop® measuring system was employed to determine the effect of added microfibres (MFs) on biogas production. Particles less than 1 mm in size of polyester, polyamide, and polyacrylic, were added to anaerobic sludge at concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 0.10 g l–1 to simulate their effect on biogas production. The yields of CH4 and CO2 produced during anaerobic digestion of the MFs-contaminated sludge were determined. The addition of MFs to sewage sludge affects methane production. The results indicated that the lowest added concentrations of 0.05 g l–1 of MFs promoted methane production, while the presence of 0.1 g l–1 decreased methane production for all types of MFs used. Polyacrylic at 0.1 g l–1 had the most negative effect on methane production (up to 27 %), while polyamide at 0.05 g l–1 reached the highest methane production (up to 25 %). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sewage sludge odorous gas release is a key barrier to resource utilization, and conditioners can mitigate the release of sulfur-containing gases. The gas release characteristics and sulfur compound distribution in pyrolysis products under both single and composite conditioning strategies of CaO, Fe2O3, and FeCl3 were investigated. This study focused on the inhibition mechanisms of these conditioners on sulfur-containing gas emissions and compared the theoretical and experimental sulfur content in the products to evaluate the potential synergistic effects of the composite conditioners. The findings indicated that at 650 °C, CaO, Fe2O3, and FeCl3 inhibited H2S release by 35.8%, 23.2%, and 9.1%, respectively. Notably, the composite of CaO with FeCl3 at temperatures ranging from 350 to 450 °C and the combination of Fe2O3 with FeCl3 at 650 °C were found to exert synergistic suppression on H2S emissions. The strongly alkaline CaO inhibited the metathesis reaction between HCl, a decomposition product of FeCl3, and the sulfur-containing compounds within the sewage sludge, thereby exerting a synergistic suppression on the emission of H2S. Conversely, at temperatures exceeding 550 °C, the formation of Ca-Fe compounds, such as FeCa2O4, appeared to diminish the sulfur-fixing capacity of the conditioners, resulting in increased H2S emissions. For instance, the combination of CaO and FeCl3 at 450 °C was found to synergistically reduce H2S emissions by 56.3%, while the combination of CaO and Fe2O3 at 650 °C synergistically enhances the release of H2S by 23.6%. The insights gained from this study are instrumental in optimizing the pyrolysis of sewage sludge, aiming to minimize its environmental footprint and enhance the efficiency of resource recovery. The increasing amount of sewage sludge produced demands new methods of its management to minimize socioeconomic and environmental problems related to its current treatment. An effective solution may be the thermochemical conversion of sewage sludge through gasification. First, the most known sewage sludge gasification processes are presented along with the challenges that they face. Then the detailed characteristics of sewage sludge are discussed from the point of view of its use in the gasification process, as well as research on the kinetics of gasification of sewage sludge char using various models. As scientific reports on sewage sludge gasification focus on the influence of process parameters on gas yield and composition (especially H2 and tar content), the main part of the work is devoted to the discussion on the influence of temperature, type, and amount of the gasifying agent and the presence of a catalyst on these parameters. Moreover, the co-gasification of sewage sludge as well as advanced gasification methods, i.e., supercritical water gasification and plasma gasification, are analyzed. Finally, the possibilities of utilization of sewage sludge gasification process by-products were discussed and the impact of the process on the environment was assessed. Biomass-to-biofuel conversion represents a critical component of the global transition to renewable energy. One of the most accessible types of biomass is sewage sludge (SS). This by-product from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contains microplastics (MPs) originating from household, industrial and urban runoff sources. Due to their small size (<5 mm) and persistence, MPs present a challenge when they are removed from sewage systems, where they mainly accumulate (~90%). The presence of MPs in SS poses environmental risks when biosolids are applied as fertilizer in agriculture or incinerated for the purpose of energy production. The key problem is the efficient and reliable identification and reduction of MPs in sewage systems, due to the lack of standardized procedures. The reduction methods for MPs might involve physical, chemical, biological, and hydrothermal approaches, including hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The HTC of SS produces hydrochar (HC), a solid biofuel, and presents a cutting-edge approach that simultaneously addresses secondary microplastic pollution and renewable biomass-derived energy production. In this article, we review briefly the MPs content in biosolids from different countries, and present HTC as a promising method for their removal from SS. In conclusion, HTC (i) effectively reduces the abundance of MPs in biosolids, (ii) produces an improved solid source of energy, and (iii) contributes to circular SS management. Waste Cooking Oil (WCO), Soy Oil (SO), and Wastewater Sludge (WWS) have great potential to increase reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content for economic and environmental benefits. This study explored the effects of SO and WCO on rutting, fatigue cracking, and low-temperature cracking performance of binders and Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) with high RAP content. The potential effect of WWS on the performance and compaction efforts of high RAP content mixes at a 10 °C (50 °F) lower compaction temperature than the control compaction temperature was also investigated. The results indicated that 85% of the RAP binders can be incorporated while maintaining similar performance compared to the control by using 15% SO or 12.5% WCO as a rejuvenator with 2.5% virgin binder. Adding 1% WWS by weight of the total binder improved the binder's rheological properties, the mix's cracking performance, and the mix's density at lower compaction temperatures. This study evaluates the sustainability of spreading wastewater or sewage sludge on agricultural land, balancing benefits with contamination risks. Conventional ecological risk indices often fail to address the long-term accumulation of metals in soils. We investigate the feasibility of spreading based on current knowledge of potentially contaminating metals and their behavior in soil. We analyzed the speciation of metals (Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Ti, Zn) through sequential extraction in sludge, treated wastewater, and soils after 14 years of application of sewage sludge and treated wastewater issued from an Algerian wastewater treatment plant. We introduce a Time to Critical Content Index (TCCI) that calculates the time required to reach critical levels of potentially mobile metals, considering total metal content and speciation. The TCCI takes into account product knowledge, soil characteristics, metal behavior, ecological/toxicological thresholds, and regulations. Applied to our case study, the TCCI indicates that spreading sewage sludge can continue despite metal contents exceeding regulatory ceiling values. Application of sewage sludge as fertilizer can be beneficial for sustainable agriculture as it could largely account for nitrogen and phosphorus demand for crops and has lower costs compared to other disposal routes, e.g., incineration, and sanitary landfills. This study evaluates the feasibility of pilot-scale pelletization of sewage sludge for non-food crops (e.g., ornamental plants). The co-pelletization method was designed by mixing sewage sludge and binder (tapioca starch) at a 9:1 sludge-to-starch weight ratio. The amount of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) of the resultant pellets were determined at 5.7%, 4.9%, and 0.2%, respectively. Following Malaysian and US Standards, non-essential elements and pathogenicity of the pelletized sewage sludge were measured below the predetermined limits and hence safe for agricultural application. The planting trial using 50% inorganic fertilizer + 50% sewage sludge pellets exhibited a promising result on the growth of the flowering plant Celosia plumosa, with having better dimension and color, 20% higher in height, 4% more chlorophyll content, 54% more leaf, 43% greater stem growth, and 27% more flowers compared to control. Likewise, the planting trial on Tagetes erecta resulted in 10.5% wider leaf, 10.6% heavier leaf dry weight, and 12.5% more chlorophyll content compared to control with full usage of inorganic fertilizer. By considering liquidities to operate the production facility, the economic analysis estimated that the production cost per ton of pelletized sewage sludge produced was USD 0.98. Vermicomposting offers an eco-friendly solution to managing the sewage sludge generated in wastewater treatment plants. The objective of this study was to investigate the microbial community composition, structure and functionality during the vermicomposting of sewage sludge. We analyzed samples of sewage sludge, earthworm casts and vermicompost by applying high-throughput sequencing 16S and ITS rRNA. Most of the bacterial (95%) and fungal taxa (99%) were eliminated and subsequently replaced by other microbial taxa originating from earthworms. Further changes resulted in a vermicompost with a more diverse bacterial (but not fungal) community. In addition, the earthworm activity led to an increase in bacterial and a decrease in fungal alpha diversity, resulting in greater differences in beta diversity between sewage sludge, casts and vermicompost. We also found that bacterial pathways associated with amino acid and plant hormone biosynthesis and antibiotic synthesis were enriched. Vermicomposting successfully eliminated most of the 10 human bacterial pathogens found in the sewage sludge. Simultaneously, parasitic and pathogenic fungal taxa were removed. Overall, vermicompost derived from sewage sludge is safer for disposal on land than raw sludge, particularly regarding their respective microbial compositions. Advanced 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxometry and diffusometry methods and VIS-nearIR spectroscopy combined with pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and totally dissolved solids (TDSSs) measurements were used to assess the properties of wastewater collected from a chicken slaughterhouse in each step of the treatment process (wastewater before treatment, biologically treated wastewater, chemically treated wastewater and discharged wastewater) and from sludge. The 1H NMR Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill (CPMG) and Pulsed-Gradient-Stimulated-Echo (PGSE) decay curves recorded for all samples of wastewater were analyzed by inverse Laplace transform (ILT) to obtain the distributions of transverse relaxation times T2 and diffusion coefficient D. The VIS-nearIR total absorbance, T2-values, D-values, pH, EC and TDSS parameters were used for statistical analysis in principal component (PCA). The 1H T2-distributions measured for the slaughterhouse wastewater lie in two main regions reflecting the number of dissolved solids or the distribution of undissolved solids. The PCA analysis successfully differentiates between polluted and less polluted wastewaters and sludge. The wastewater treatment applied by the slaughterhouse is efficient. The recommended methods for wastewater monitoring are the NMR T2- and D-distributions and EC, TDSSs and NMR-D diffusion coefficient. The solids in sewage sludge are primarily composed of organic matter and offer new possibilities for sustainable sludge management, if considered as a stable biomass source in terms of quantity and quality. Reducing the volume of sludge with an extremely high moisture content is challenging, and enhanced dewatering through mechanical treatment is crucial from an environmental and sustainability perspective because it alleviates the reliance on thermal treatment. This study employed ultrasonication to enhance the dewatering efficiency of activated sludge. The disruption of sludge induced by ultrasonication notably facilitated the elimination of intracellular water during mechanical expression. Additionally, the ultrasonicated sludge was verified to be re-flocculated by introducing inorganic electrolytes such as Ca2+ (divalent cations), Al3+ (trivalent cations), and polyferric sulfate. Conversely, no re-flocculation of disrupted sludge was observed upon applying organic polymer flocculant. Under optimized conditions, the sludge re-flocculation progressed to form large flocs, leading to a decreased suspended solids (SS) value from 1423 to 73 mg/L and reduction in capillary suction time (CST) from over 2000 to 18 s. Following pretreatment, the moisture content of the mechanically expressed cake at 500 kPa decreased significantly from 76 wt% (untreated sludge) to less than 60 wt% (treated sludge) due to the elimination of intracellular water. This study aimed to determine the quantity and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released from sewage sludge-derived biochar and digestion-derived biochar under different extraction conditions (deionised water, hot water, 0.1 mol·L-1 NaOH) using TOC analyser, UV-vis spectroscopy. Biochars were produced through the pyrolysis process at temperatures of 400, 500, 600, and 800 ℃. The objective of this article was to examine the influence of diverse extraction solutions on the amount of dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) released from biochars and to delineate alterations in the composition and characteristics of DOC contingent on the extraction parameters. The findings demonstrated that elevated pyrolysis temperatures resulted in a notable reduction in DOC concentration, with fractions extracted using NaOH exhibiting the highest DOC concentrations. SUVA254 analysis and the E2/E3 ratio indicated that biochars produced at higher temperatures contained a greater proportion of aromatic and hydrophobic substances. These results indicate that pyrolysis temperature, feedstock type and extraction conditions are of significant importance for the properties of DOC in biochar. Due to its nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium content, sewage sludge is used, among other things, to grow plants for energy purposes or to intensify biogas production. These processes are always accompanied by odor emissions, which are treated as pollution according to European legislation and are subject to legal regulations in many countries. Therefore, this publication presents the results of a study on the removal of odor from sewage sludge by adsorption on biochars produced from selected biowaste. Beekeeping waste (grain) and coffee brewing residues (spent coffee grounds) were selected for the study. Both materials were pyrolyzed to produce biochar which was applied for adsorption of odors from sewage sludge. Commercial Organosorb 200-1 Wi activated carbon was used as a comparison material. The odors were taken from dried sewage sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The obtained biochars are suitable for odor adsorption and can be an alternative to commercial adsorbents. The biochar from beekeeping waste showed the highest efficiency, allowing 100% odor removal. Slightly worse results were obtained for biochar from spent coffee grounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vermicomposting utilizes the synergistic effect of earthworms with microorganisms to accelerate the stabilization of organic matter in biowastes. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism behind the maturity of vermicompost and the growth of earthworms exposed to biochar of varying particle sizes remains unclear. This study presents an investigation of the effect of biochar particle size on earthworm (Eisenia fetida) survival, microbial diversity, and the quality of vermicompost products. To address these issues, pelletized dewatered sludge samples from a municipal sewage treatment plant were amended with pine-based biochar with particle sizes of 1–2 mm, 25–75 μm, 200 nm, and 60 nm as the substrate for vermicomposting. This study revealed that the addition of millimeter-scale biochar and micron-scale biochar significantly promoted the degradation of organic matter since the organic matter in the treatment with 1–2 mm biochar at the end of the vermicomposting experiment decreased by 12.6%, which was equivalent to a 1.9-fold increase compared with that of the control. Excessive nanopowdering of nanobiochar significantly affected the survival of earthworms and led to 24.4–33.3% cumulative mortality, while millimeter-scale (mm) biochar and micron-scale (μm) biochar achieved zero mortality. The findings of this study could be used for evaluating the potential impact of nanoscale biochar to earthworms and guiding biochar-augmented vermicomposting. Highlights: The addition of 1–2 mm biochar resulted in a 1.9-fold greater reduction in organic matter compared to the control group. The introduction of 25–75 μm biochar led to a significant 94% increase in earthworm cocoons. The cumulative mortality rates of 200 nm and 60 nm biochar amendment reached peaks of 33.3% and 24.4% at first week, respectively. Wastewater treatment plants generate significant amounts of sludge, a residual product that is rich in nutrients, usually considered waste, and traditionally eliminated by storage or incineration, methods that are expensive, environmentally damaging, and often unsustainable. Composting is increasingly recognized as an ecological and durable solution for managing biodegradable waste, including sludge resulting from wastewater treatment. The composting of residual sludge usually requires mixing with bulking agents, such as green waste or agricultural residues, to ensure a well-balanced carbon–nitrogen ratio. This mixture undergoes a controlled aerobic decomposition, sometimes followed by post-treatment, resulting in a stabilized final product that is nutrient-rich and pathogen-free and can be used as soil amendment or fertilizer in different agricultural or landscaping applications. By using composting, communities can reduce elimination costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and minimize the environmental impact of sludge management. This paper reviews recent reported experiences in the laboratory regarding full-scale sludge composting, highlighting the particularities of the processes, the influence factors, the quality of the final product, and the environmental and regulatory constraints. Sewage sludge is an important soil conditioner, and source of nutrients with a potential for use in agriculture. However, such benefit needs to be weighed against the risks due to the presence of heavy metals, and other substances that may endanger human health, plants, soil and the ecosystem. This research had the objective of evaluating the agricultural potential of sewage sludge together with the risks that may be present in use. Samples of sewage sludge from seven wastewater treatment plants in Eswatini were analyzed for selected physical and chemical parameters, and heavy metal concentrations using commonly established laboratory procedures. The analysis results indicated that, sludge samples exhibited high organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, macro nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus and micro nutrients (trace metal elements) needed for plant growth. Anaerobically digested sludge samples showed higher carbon to nitrogen ratio because of biomass loss in the form of methane and carbon dioxide. The heavy metal concentrations are all within safe limits except the sludge from Matsapha area that had levels of chromium, and nickel above regulatory limits. With respect to their heavy metal contents, most of the sludge samples would qualify as Class A sludge ready to be used as organic fertilizer for agriculture without regular monitoring of heavy metals in the soil to which they are applied. The study results indicated the importance of sewage sludge for their agricultural potential through supplementation of both micro and macro nutrients needed for plant growth, for improving the soil properties such as water holding capacity and permeability, through the increase of organic matter content, and retention of nutrients due to the high cation exchange capacity. All these benefits are realized with sewage sludge being a lower cost alternative to commercial fertilizers. In this study, the co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS), two-component special municipal waste (SMW) and plastic waste (Plastic) was studied using thermogravimetric equipment and a scaled-up tubular reactor. During the experiments, the effects of the raw material composition and pyrolysis temperature on the decomposition processes, the product yields and compositions were investigated. It was found that co-pyrolysis was a series of complex reactions and resulted in more volatile and lower residue yield than the pyrolysis of the individual raw materials. In some cases (e.g., 25%SMW + 75%Plastic, 25%SS + 75%Plastic, 50%SS + 50%Plastic blends), it also caused a higher synthesis gas yield and H2/CO ratio. During the thermogravimetric analysis, the beneficial effects occurred at lower temperatures, but in the scaled-up experiments, these effects only prevailed at 900 °C as a result of the larger amount of raw materials and the worse heat transfer. The produced gases can be characterized by a lower heating value of 17.3–35 MJ/Nm3. This open-field small-plot long-term experiment was set up between 2011 and 2021 with willow (Salix triandra × S. viminalis 'Inger'), grown as a short rotation coppice energy crop in Nyíregyháza, Hungary. The sandy loam Cambisol was treated with wastewater solids (WS) in the form of municipal sewage sludge compost (MSSC, 2011, 2013, and 2016), municipal sewage sediment (MSS, 2018), and with willow ash (WA, 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2018). Control plots remained untreated since 2011. All soil treatments significantly enhanced the uptake or accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the leaves of willows. During June 2019, 53 weeks after the last soil treatments, MSSC + MSS-, WA-, and MSSC + MSS + WA-treated willows leaves had 14–68% more As, 17–48% more Ba, 31–104% more Cr, 4–12% more Cu, 6–15% more Mn, 18–218% more Pb, and 11–35% more Zn compared to the untreated control. Significantly higher Mn and Zn concentrations were measured in the MSSC + MSS + WA treatments than in the MSSC + MSS treatments. The assumption that WA reduces the accumulation of PTEs in willow leaves when applied together with MSSC and MSS was therefore only partially confirmed. The hypothesis of this study was that PTEs accumulated in the leaves would affect the microanatomical parameters of the leaves. Numerous positive changes were observed with the combined application of WS and WA. MSSC + MSS + WA treatment reduced the thickness of the mesophyll less than MSSC + MSS or WA treatments alone; the size of the cells building the palisade and spongy parenchyma and the extent of the main vein significantly increased. In the case of the combined treatment, the extent of the sclerenchymatous stock was smaller than in the control but larger than in WS- or WA-treated willow. The extent of the collenchymatous stock significantly increased compared to the control. Increases in the thickness of the adaxial epidermis and the number of stomata were statistically significant. However, the extent of the increases did not reach the extent of the increase experienced in the case of WS treatment, as the size of the stomata did not significantly decrease. The disposal of municipal sewage sludge (MSS) from wastewater treatment plants poses a major environmental challenge due to the presence of inorganic and organic pollutants. Co-pyrolysis, in which MSS is thermally decomposed in combination with biomass feedstocks, has proven to be a promising method to immobilize inorganic pollutants, reduce the content of organic pollutants, reduce the toxicity of biochar and improve biochar's physical and chemical properties. This part of the review systematically examines the effects of various co-substrates on the physical and chemical properties of MSS biochar. This review also addresses the effects of the pyrolysis conditions (temperature and mixing ratio) on the content and stability of the emerging pollutants in biochar. Finally, this review summarizes the results of recent studies to provide an overview of the current status of the application of MSS biochar from pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis for the remediation of HM-contaminated soils. This includes consideration of the soil and heavy metal types, experimental conditions, and the efficiency of HM immobilization. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential of MSS biochar for environmental sustainability and offers insights into future research directions for optimizing biochar applications in soil remediation. The irrigation of soils with reclaimed contaminated wastewater or its amendment with sewage sludge contributes to the uptake of pharmaceuticals by vegetables growing in the soil. A multiresidue method has been devised to determine five pharmaceuticals and nine of their main metabolites in leafy and root vegetables. The method employs ultrasound-assisted extraction, clean-up via dispersive solid-phase extraction, and analysis through liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Box–Behnken design was used to refine variables such as extraction solvent volume, time of extraction, number of extraction cycles, and the type and amount of d-SPE sorbent. The method achieved linearity (R2) greater than 0.994, precision (relative standard deviation) under 16% for most compounds, and detection limits ranging from 0.007 to 2.25 ng g−1 dry weight. This method was applied to a leafy vegetable (lettuce) and to a root vegetable (carrot) sourced from a local market. Wheat straw (WS) constitutes a considerable biomass resource and can be used to produce the energy carrier methane through anaerobic digestion. Due to the low contents of several nutrient elements and water in harvested WS, the use of sewage sludge (SS), consisting of primary sludge and waste-activated sludge, as a nutrient source in co-digestion with steam-pretreated wheat straw (PWS) was investigated theoretically and practically. WS was steam-pretreated, with acetic acid as the catalyst, at 190 °C for 10 min, ending with a rapid reduction in pressure. Process stability and specific methane production were studied for the mono-digestion and co-digestion of PWS and SS in continuous stirred-tank reactors for 208 days. The HRT was 22 days and the OLR 2.1 gVS L−1 d−1. In co-digestion, the OLR was increased to 2.8 gVS L−1 d−1 for one week. Nutrient elements were added to PWS mono-digestion at two different concentration levels. Co-digestion was stable, with a total concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) at a safe level below 0.35 g L−1 at both OLRs. The higher OLR during co-digestion would require an increase in reactor volume of 14%, compared to the mono-digestion of SS, but would increase the annual production of methane by 26%. The specific methane production levels for PWS mono-digestion, SS mono-digestion, and co-digestion were 170, 320, and 260 mL g−1VS, respectively. Co-digestion did not result in a synergistic increase in the methane yield. SCFAs accumulated in the mono-digestion of PWS when using lower levels of nutrient supplements, and the concentrations fluctuated at higher nutrient levels. The main conclusion is that PWS and SS can be co-digested with long-term process stability, without the addition of chemicals other than water and acetic acid. The specific methane production for mono-digestion of PWS was relatively low. The effect of using higher concentrations of micronutrients in PWS mono-digestion should be evaluated in future studies. A continuous long-term field experiment with maize monoculture was conducted to evaluate the P availability and balance, DM yield, P uptake, and P sorption parameters in chernozem soil after 27 years. A total of 2 doses of nitrogen (120 and 240 kg ha−1) were applied as mineral nitrogen (N120 and N240) and sewage sludge (SS120 and SS240) and compared with unfertilized control (Con). The aboveground biomass (DM) yields significantly increased in the order of Con < SS120 < SS240 < N120 < N240 treatments and the maximum P uptake was recorded for both N240 and SS240 (25.1 kg P ha−1) according to the nutrient application gradient. The N120 and N240 treatments positively influenced the DM yield but negatively influenced the P balance (−648 and −678 kg P ha−1 27 years−1), gradually bringing a risk of P deficiency in the soil. On the other hand, applications of SS120 and SS240 positively influenced the P availability and pseudototal (PAR) content in the soil, which resulted in a buildup of legacy P or an increase in P saturation greater than the environmental threshold value. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are widespread in the environment, and soils, specifically, are hotspots for microorganisms with inherent antibiotic resistance. Manure and sludge used as fertilizers in agricultural production have been shown to contain vast amounts of ARGs, and due to continued applications, ARGs accumulate in agricultural soils. Some soils, however, harbor a resilience capacity that could depend on specific soil properties, as well as the presence of predatory bacteria that are able to hydrolyse living bacteria, including bacteria of clinical importance. The objectives of this study were to (i) investigate if the antibiotic resistance profile of the soil microbiota could be differently affected by the addition of cow manure, chicken manure, and sludge, and (ii) investigate if the amendments had an effect on the presence of predatory bacteria. The three organic amendments were mixed separately with a field soil, divided into pots, and incubated in a greenhouse for 28 days. Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) was used to quantify three ARGs, two predatory bacteria, and total number of bacteria. In this study, we demonstrated that the choice of organic amendment significantly affected the antibiotic resistance profile of soil, and promoted the growth of predatory bacteria, while the total number of bacteria was unaffected. Reports regarding the composition and functions of microorganisms in activated sludge from wastewater treatment plants for treating tuna processing wastewater remains scarce, with prevailing studies focusing on municipal and industrial wastewater. This study delves into the efficiency and biological dynamics of activated sludge from tuna processing wastewater, particularly under conditions of high lipid content, for pollutant removal. Through metagenomic analysis, we dissected the structure of microbial community, and its relevant biological functions as well as pathways of nitrogen and lipid metabolism in activated sludge. The findings revealed the presence of 19 phyla, 1,880 genera, and 7,974 species, with Proteobacteria emerging as the predominant phylum. The study assessed the relative abundance of the core microorganisms involved in nitrogen removal, including Thauera sp. MZ1T and Alicycliphilus denitrificans K601, among others. Moreover, the results also suggested that a diverse array of fatty acid-degrading microbes, such as Thauera aminoaromatica and Cupriavidus necator H16, could thrive under lipid-rich conditions. This research can provide some referable information for insights into optimizing the operations of wastewater treatment and identify some potential microbial agents for nitrogen and fatty acid degradation. Organic fertilization is a key issue in European Union (EU) regulations, particularly in the context of promoting a circular nutrient economy, maintaining soil quality, and sequestering carbon to face climate change. In a rainfed system in Northeastern Spain, an experiment was set up (split-plot design). It included five pre-sowing N fertilization treatments: control, mineral, pig slurry, and composted sewage sludge (two rates). The average N rates were 0, 30, 141, 176, and 351 kg N ha−1, respectively. They were combined with mineral N topdressings (0, 50, and 100 kg N ha−1). Three crops were grown: barley (nine years), wheat (three years), and rapeseed (one year). In the driest years (c. 350 mm rainfall), the yields averaged 2.5, 2.0, and 1.9 Mg ha−1, respectively. The maximum yields were for barley (6.5 Mg ha−1) and wheat (5.5 Mg ha−1). The avoidance of a significant increase in soil residual NO3−-N, plus the control of soil build up of available P, micronutrients, and Cd, defines the fertilization strategies. (i) With a previous spring drought season, no fertilization is needed in the following year, if devoted to winter cereals. (ii) In rainier seasons, pig slurry or composted sewage sludge (lowest rate) applied at sowing is sufficient; however, 50 kg of mineral-N ha−1 at the topdressing can be applied. The study found that pig slurry favors K, Mg, Cu, and Zn availability, while composted sewage sludge enhances Fe availability. This study aimed to determine the level of immobilization and the mechanism of leaching of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) from self-hardening slurries (SHSs) based on ash from municipal sewage sludge incineration. To mimic the character of the SHS operation in the cut-off wall, the author's leaching method—a filtration leaching test based on the percolation test—was used. In addition, this paper briefly described the factors affecting the level of heavy metal release from cement composites, as well as the chemical mechanisms and physical processes responsible for this phenomenon. This study showed that SHSs immobilized heavy metals at high levels (≥98.18%), and the aqueous extracts from the samples had a high pH (≥12.9%). Statistically significant correlations were obtained between the concentration of some metals and pH (positive correlation for Cr and Zn), test duration (positive correlation for Cd) and the liquid-to-solid ratio (negative correlation for Cd and Cr). Anaerobic wastewater treatment technology has been intensively and extensively investigated in the industry and scientific research. Inspired by the advantages of multi-stage and multi-phase anaerobic reactor technology (SMPA) in recent years, a three-stage anaerobic reactor (3S-AR) was designed and applied to treat poplar chemical–mechanical pulp wastewater, and various operation parameters, including the volume loading rate (VLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT), ascending velocity, reflux ratio, pH and temperature of the 3S-AR, were optimized to evaluate the reactor's removal efficiency for poplar wastewater. The properties of anaerobic granular sludge and the composition of wastewater were also characterized to assess microorganism growth and pollutant migration. Results show that the COD removal rate was over 75% with a volume loading rate range of 15–25 gCOD/(L·d) in the 3S-AR; the hydraulic retention time was also found to be an important factor affecting the performance of the 3S-AR reactor. The volume loading rate and degradation efficiency of the 3S-AR reactor are higher than those of the up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Microorganism separation can be achieved in the 3S-AR, which is conducive to the growth and methanogenesis activity of bacteria, thereby leading to enhanced removal and buffering efficiency. After treatment in the 3S-AR, the main pollutants of poplar wastewater were benzene aromatic acids and long-chain esters, which do no biodegrade easily; in contrast, most of the fatty acid substances with small molecules were completely degraded. This study optimized the organic matter solubilization of faecal sludge (FS). FS was treated in a microwave oven at varying microwave power and treatment times. Changes in total solids (TS), volatile solids (VS), total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD), and soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) were measured. A response surface methodology (RSM) optimized organic matter solubilization during microwave treatment. A central composite design was employed, and the observed responses were used to fit a second-order response surface model. Microwave treatment at 14,000 kJ/kg. TS reduced FS volume by 58%. The VS/TS ratios remained similar before and after microwave treatment. The solubilization of organic matter (measured by the sCOD/TCOD ratio) increased after microwave treatment, showing an initial linear increase with specific energy followed by a decrease. The highest solubilization was 38%, achieved at a microwave power level of 630 W for 3 min. Organic matter solubilization was more sensitive to contact time than microwave power. RSM determined the optimized conditions to be 617.7 W and 2.4 min, within the experimental design boundaries. These findings align with similar observations from other studies using wastewater sludge. The results suggest that microwave treatment can achieve multiple FS treatment objectives. The concept of the circular economy represents the most relevant mainstream approach to reducing the negative environmental impact of waste. Anaerobic digestion has proved to be one of the leading and widely adopted techniques for sewage sludge treatment under the principles of the circular economy. The purpose of this study is to forecast environmental and economic indicators through modeling the extensive utilization of biogas technologies with a case study of an administrative territorial unit. The proposed methodological framework involves the use of averaged specific indicators and is based on the relationship between inhabitants, waste generation rates, biogas yield, greenhouse gas emission mitigation and biogas energy potential. The widespread use of anaerobic digestion techniques according to the proposed methodology in the instant scenario will ensure the biogas yield of 10 million Nm3 within the considered administrative territory unit with a population of 4.2 million P.E., which ultimately can be expressed in electricity and thermal generation potential of 20.8 and 24.8 million kWh*y, respectively, annual greenhouse gas elimination of 119.6 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent and capital investment attraction of EUR 65.18 million. Furthermore, all sewage sludge will be subjected to disinfection and stabilization procedures to ensure its safe utilization. The findings of this study offer an opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders to assess the environmental and economic benefits of the widespread adoption of biogas technologies. Industrial wastewater sludge is one of the vital sources of metals, including heavy metals, valuable metals, and precise metals. Apart from metals' necessity and economic value, some are toxic and harmful to the environment. This review explores the technologies currently applied for extracting and recovering heavy metals from industrial wastewater sludge. The technologies have been explained, and the merits and demerits of methods, as reported in past investigations, have been highlighted. The salient findings of this review are that the hydrometallurgical processes using acid leaching (H2SO4, HNO3, HCl, etc.) have been considered for the metal extraction process. Metal dissolution, concentration/purification, and recovery are the main stages of hydrometallurgical processes. The selection of successive metal recovery methods depends on the concentration of metals and chemical characteristics of industrial wastewater sludge. Different metal purification and concentrations were reported, including adsorption, ion exchange solvent extraction, and so forth, while precipitation and electrodeposition were mainly applied for metal recovery from industrial wastewater sludge. In this review, the cost and economic viability of the metal recovery process are also evaluated by previous reported studies. The anaerobic digestion of aqueous condensate from fast pyrolysis is a promising technology for enhancing carbon and energy recovery from waste. Syngas, another pyrolysis product, could be integrated as a co-substrate to improve process efficiency. However, limited knowledge exists on the co-fermentation of pyrolysis syngas and aqueous condensate by anaerobic cultures and the effects of substrate toxicity. This work investigates the ability of mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic mixed cultures to co-ferment syngas and the aqueous condensate from either sewage sludge or polyethylene plastics pyrolysis in semi-batch bottle fermentations. It identifies inhibitory concentrations for carboxydotrophic and methanogenic reactions, examines specific component removal and assesses energy recovery potential. The results show successful co-fermentation of syngas and aqueous condensate components like phenols and N-heterocycles. However, the characteristics and load of the aqueous condensates affected process performance and product formation. The toxicity, likely resulting from the synergistic effect of multiple toxicants, depended on the PACs' composition. At 37 °C, concentrations of 15.6 gCOD/gVSS and 7.8 gCOD/gVSS of sewage sludge-derived aqueous condensate inhibited by 50% carboxydotrophic and methanogenic activity, respectively. At 55 °C, loads between 3.9 and 6.8 gCOD/gVSS inhibited by 50% both reactions. Polyethylene plastics condensate showed higher toxicity, with 2.8 gCOD/gVSS and 0.3 gCOD/gVSS at 37 °C decreasing carboxydotrophic and methanogenic rates by 50%. At 55 °C, 0.3 gCOD/gVSS inhibited by 50% CO uptake rates and methanogenesis. Increasing PAC loads reduced methane production and promoted short-chain carboxylates formation. The recalcitrant components in sewage sludge condensate hindered e-mol recovery, while plastics condensate showed high e-mol recoveries despite the stronger toxicity. Even with challenges posed by substrate toxicity and composition variations, the successful conversion of syngas and aqueous condensates highlights the potential of this technology in advancing carbon and energy recovery from anthropogenic waste streams. To meet global food demands sustainably, it is necessary to safeguard finite natural resources and reduce harmful emissions to the environment. Nutrients in biowastes are often not managed appropriately. Instead, they can be recovered, recycled into bio-based fertilizers (BBFs) and reincorporated into food production systems. This review addresses three critical issues for developing and adopting new BBFs, focusing on the European context: (1) BBFs should match the agronomic efficiency of mineral fertilizers. We propose that the agronomic efficiency of BBFs can be increased through pre-treating the inputs in biowaste transformation processes (e.g., anaerobic digestion), chemical treatments of existing BBFs, organo-mineral combinations, and soil placement strategies. (2) Production and use of new BBFs is not free of environmental impacts, and these are influenced by regional conditions. (3) Public perception and end-user preferences play a significant role in the adoption of BBFs. Therefore, it is vital to address the requirements of end-users of BBFs. Our findings indicate that for widespread adoption, BBFs need sufficient and reliable nutrient amounts and crop-adequate ratios, as well as competitive pricing. A key advantage of BBFs over mineral fertilizers is their ability to improve soil fertility. However, farmers also require fertilizers that can be handled and applied with existing machinery and offer the practicality of commercial products. Another important aspect is the willingness of consumers to buy products fertilized with BBFs. Designing and promoting BBFs requires a careful assessment of environmental impacts and regional conditions, as the sustainability of BBFs depends on factors like energy sources and biowaste transport distances. Ultimately, the goal is to promote a circular economy and not just to substitute mineral fertilizers with new products. Background: Achieving climate neutrality is a goal that calls for action in all sectors. The requirements for improving waste management and reducing carbon emissions from the energy sector present an opportunity for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to introduce sustainable waste treatment practices. A common biotechnological approach for waste valorization is the production of sugars from lignocellulosic waste biomass via biological hydrolysis. WWTPs produce waste streams such as sewage sludge and screenings which have not yet been fully explored as feedstocks for sugar production yet are promising because of their carbohydrate content and the lack of lignin structures. This study aims to explore the enzymatic hydrolysis of various waste streams originating from WWTPs by using a laboratory-made and a commercial cellulolytic enzyme cocktail for the production of sugars. Additionally, the impact of lipid and protein recovery from sewage sludge prior to the hydrolysis was assessed. Results: Treatment with a laboratory-made enzyme cocktail produced by Irpex lacteus (IL) produced 31.2 mg sugar per g dry wastewater screenings. A commercial enzyme formulation released 101 mg sugar per g dry screenings, corresponding to 90% degree of saccharification. There was an increase in sugar levels for all sewage substrates during the hydrolysis with IL enzyme. Lipid and protein recovery from primary and secondary sludge prior to the hydrolysis with IL enzyme was not advantageous in terms of sugar production. Conclusions: The laboratory-made fungal IL enzyme showed its versatility and possible application beyond the typical lignocellulosic biomass. Wastewater screenings are well suited for valorization through sugar production by enzymatic hydrolysis. Saccharification of screenings represents a viable strategy to divert this waste stream from landfill and achieve the waste treatment and renewable energy targets set by the European Union. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of fluorinated synthetic chemicals that are highly recalcitrant, toxic, and bio-accumulative and have been detected in biosolids worldwide, posing potential risks to humans and the environment. Recent studies suggest that the organic C-F bond in PFAS can be destructed and potentially mineralised into inorganic fluorides during thermal treatment. This study focuses on thermodynamic equilibrium investigations and the fate of fluorine compounds post-PFAS destruction during biosolid thermal treatment. The results indicate that gas-phase fluorine compounds are mainly hydrogen fluoride (HF) and alkali fluorides, whereas solid-phase fluorine compounds include alkaline earth fluorides and their spinels. High moisture and oxygen content in the volatiles increased the concentration of HF in the gas phase. However, adding minerals reduced the emission of HF in the gas phase significantly and enhanced the capture of fluorine as CaF2 spinel in the solid phase. This study also investigates the effect of feedstock composition on the fate of fluorine. High ash content and low volatile matter in the feedstock reduced HF gas emissions and increased fluorine capture in the solid product. The findings of this work are useful in designing thermal systems with optimised operating conditions for minimising the release of fluorinated species during the thermal treatment of PFAS-containing biosolids. The optimal process conditions concerning the hydrothermal carbonization of digested sewage sludge are crucial to the economically effective technology needed to produce a solid product, hydrochar, for energy purposes. Accordingly, different residence times, 0.5 h, 1 h and 2 h, were investigated in order to understand the effect of residence time on the process. Furthermore, the physical and chemical properties of hydrochar were investigated and compared to the raw material. For these reasons, analyses describing fuel properties were performed, including ultimate and proximate analyses, HHV, and TGA analysis. The latter method was employed to study the combustion process of solid samples. In addition, the oxide content of different elements within the ash of solid samples was determined using the XRF method to calculate indices related to operational problems during the combustion process. The results confirmed that time did not matter significantly and the physical and chemical properties of hydrochar were very similar to each other. However, the contact angle for 2 h of residence time confirmed that a longer processing time resulted in a more hydrophobic character of hydrochar and enabled more effective dewaterability of hydrothermal slurry. It was also noted that the hydrothermal carbonization process affected the sewage sludge in a positive way. In brief, the results confirmed that the hydrochar was a brittle, moderately hydrophilic, solid carbon-containing product that provided a different combustion performance than the raw sewage sludge. The aim of the experiment was to determine the yield of Miscanthus × giganteus M 19 in the first three years of cultivation and its bioaccumulation of Zn and Ni in aboveground and underground parts in response to different doses of sewage sludge and substrate left after the production of white mushrooms. Miscanthus × giganteus is a grass species that adapts to different environmental conditions and can be grown in various climatic zones of Europe and North America. In April 2018 the experiment was established in a randomized block design and with four replications in central-eastern Poland. Waste organic materials (municipal sewage sludge and mushroom substrate) were applied to the soil in 2018 in the spring before the rhizomes of giant miscanthus were planted. Each year (from 2018 to 2020) biomass was harvested in December. The yield of fresh and dry matter and the total content of Zn and Ni, after wet mineralization of plant samples, were determined by optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). After the third year of cultivation, the content of Zn and Ni in rhizomes and in the soil was determined again. In relation to control, an increase in the yield of miscanthus biomass in response to organic waste materials was noted. Plants responded to mushroom substrate (SMS) with the highest average yield (16.89 Mgha−1DM), while on the control plot it was 13.86 Mg ha−1DM. After the third year of cultivation, rhizomes of Miscanthus x giganteus contained higher amounts of Zn (63.3 mg kg−1) and Ni (7.54 mg kg−1) than aboveground parts (40.52 and 2.07 mg kg–1), which indicated that heavy metals were retained in underground parts. With the increasing production of municipal sewage sludge (MSS) worldwide, the development of efficient and sustainable strategies for its management is crucial. Pyrolysis of MSS offers several benefits, including volume reduction, pathogen elimination, and energy recovery through the production of biochar, syngas, and bio-oil. However, the process can be limited by the composition of the MSS, which can affect the quality of the biochar. Co-pyrolysis has emerged as a promising solution for the sustainable management of MSS, reducing the toxicity of biochar and improving its physical and chemical properties to expand its potential applications. This review discusses the status of MSS as a feedstock for biochar production. It describes the types and properties of various co-substrates grouped according to European biochar certification requirements, including those from forestry and wood processing, agriculture, food processing residues, recycling, anaerobic digestion, and other sources. In addition, the review addresses the optimization of co-pyrolysis conditions, including the type of furnace, mixing ratio of MSS and co-substrate, co-pyrolysis temperature, residence time, heating rate, type of inert gas, and flow rate. This overview shows the potential of different biomass types for the upgrading of MSS biochar and provides a basis for research into new co-substrates. As an industrial waste residue, Electrolytic Manganese Residue (EMR) can greatly promote sludge dewatering and further particle-size optimization can significantly strengthen sludge dewaterability. In this study, the effects of ammonium sulfate, calcium sulphate dihydrate, and manganese carbonate in EMR on sludge dewatering performance were investigated using the response surface optimization method. It was found that the optimized ratio of three components in EMR was 1.0:1.6:2.2 based on capillary suction time (CST), specific resistance of filtration (SRF), and zeta potential of dewatered sludge. The composition ratio of particle-size optimized EMR was modified based on the above optimization, resulting in a significant increase in sludge dewatering performance (CST and SRF reduced by 8.7% and 11.2%, respectively). Compared with those in original sludge, the content of bound extracellular polymeric substances in the conditioned sludge with optimized ratio was drastically reduced while that of soluble extracellular polymeric substances was slightly increased, which was in accordance with the decline of fluorescence intensity. These findings indicated the disintegration of extracellular polymeric substances, the enhancement of hydrophobicity, and dewatering properties of the sludge. Sewage sludge has long been perceived as the bottleneck of wastewater treatment plants in China, restraining the healthy development of sewage treatment for decades. In recent years, pyrolysis as a promising multifunctional platform has attracted increasing interest for converting sludge into valuable resources. However, the generation and presence of pyrolysis tar, one of the key by-products during sludge pyrolysis, limit the wide application of pyrolysis product resources. The efficient and selective conversion of tar is complicated by the inherent complexity of sludge and various pollutants (e.g., N-, S-, and Cl-containing organic pollutants, heavy metals) in pyrolysis products, which may either migrate into tar or be released into the environment, complicating the in-depth treatment of tar and posing environmental risks. This review systematically examines the transformation and migration of tar and related secondary pollutants during sludge pyrolysis in order to optimize the pyrolysis process for resource recovery. We provide an overview of the research progress on tar generation, transformation, and secondary pollutants during pyrolysis; discuss potential control strategies for pollution abatement; and highlight the importance of understanding tar transformation during pyrolysis. Additionally, we offer insights into future development trends and research hotpots in this field. This review aims to deliver valuable information on the mechanism of tar formation, the conversion pathways of secondary pollutants, and corresponding control strategies, thus guiding the design and optimization of sludge pyrolysis processes to achieve higher efficiency and selectivity, with minimal environmental pollution. This study aimed to define the optimal composition of three heterogeneous substrates of the anaerobic digestion process to maximize methane production. The investigated substrates were sewage sludge (SS), the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), and horse waste (HW). The optimal composition of these substrates was defined using the mixture design and, more specifically, the simplex–centroid mixture design. Customized methods and materials were employed to study the complex mixture design of these substrates. The findings revealed that the optimal mixture involved all three substrates with the composition 0.17 HW, 0.66 SS, and 0.17 OFMSW, which demonstrated the highest methane yield at 269 NmL·gVS−1. In addition, a mathematical model was developed to predict methane production based on a specific composition of co-substrates. The results were validated at the small pilot scale. Contextualization: The malt house’s sludge is an organic matter which contains nutrients for plants. Therefore, its utilization as organic fertilizer is an alternative to landfilling, because during the handling the sludge does not have contact with pathogenic organisms and trace metals. Knowledge gap: There are only a few studies to appraise the malt house’s sludge as an organic fertilizer. In contrast, most of the studies are conducted with sewage sludge generated by the urban wastewater treatment system. Purpose: To appraise the corn’s productivity and the fertility of the soil fertilized with sludge’s portions in comparison with mineral fertilization. Methodology: The study was conducted based on randomized blocks design with five ways of treatment (T1 = no fertilization; T2 = mineral fertilization; T3 = 24 Mg ha-1 of sludge; T4 = 48 Mg ha-1 of sludge and T5 = 72 Mg ha-1 of sludge) and four repetitions. During the sowing were distributed nine seeds per linear meter at a spacing of 0,80 cm between rows. After one hundred days from sowing, the cobs of ten plants located in the useful portion plot were collected in order to remove the grains. The grains were placed in an oven at 65 °C, until they reached constant weight to determine the dry mass. The productivity was estimated by extrapolating the grain dry mass data of the useful plot to one hectare. Soil samples were collected to assess soil fertility. The results were submitted to variance analysis and the differences between the averages to the Tukey test at 5%. Results and conclusions: The grain productions obtained with 24, 48 and 72 Mg ha-1 of sludge were 18,67, 28,00 and 40,66% higher than that observed with mineral fertilization. The results of grain yields with the doses of sludge were in the average of productivity observed in Brazil. The dosages of sludge increased the availability of phosphorus from 26,7 mg dm-3 in the soil with mineral fertilization to 94,0 mg dm-1 with 72 Mg ha-1 of sludge, respectively. According to these results it can be concluded that the sludge has agronomic quality, and the dose of 24 Mg ha-1 optimized the productivity of maize. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was aimed to determine the possibility of reusing sewage sludge in the cultivation of Taurus snowdrop (Galanthus elwesii Hook. f.). Taurus snowdrop bulbs with a circumference of 4 cm were used as plant material in the experiment. Bulbs were planted in five different growing media, 100% soil, 25% sewage sludge+75% soil, 50% sewage sludge+50% soil, 75% sewage sludge+25% soil, and 100% sewage sludge. The bulb diameter ranged between 16.8 and 18.5 mm, and bulb weight varied between 2.74 g and 6.33 g. The greatest bulblet weight (2.17 g) and leaf thickness (0.90 mm) obtained was in 75% sewage sludge+25% soil mixture. The number of bulblets ranged from 1.0 to 1.33 piece/bulb. Leaf length was between 7.30 and 9.25 cm, and leaf width was 9.7 to 11.6 mm. The effects of growing media on pedicle length, pedicle diameter, and fruit diameter were not found to be significant. Pedicle lengths were between 4.39 and 6.38 cm, pedicle diameters ranged from 1.59 to 1.80 mm, and fruit diameters were between 4.40 and 7.40 mm. It was concluded based on the present findings that 75% sewage sludge+25% soil mixture could reliably be used as a growing media for Taurus snowdrop culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the research was to assess the quality of organic matter contained in sewage sludge composting products and their co-composting with fly ash and mineral wool. The object of the research were composts produced using stabilized sewage sludge from the municipal sewage treatment plant (SS_1C) and sewage sludge with the addition of 20% (SSF_2C) and 30% (SSF_3C) of fly ash and 5% (SSW_4C) and 10% (SSW_5C) of mineral wool. Selected physicochemical properties, fractional composition of humic compounds, and the degree and rate of humification were determined in compost samples taken after 180 days of composting. The reaction of the evaluated composts was close to optimal for mature composts. Co-composting of sewage sludge with mineral wool and ash increased the sorption capacity in composts compared to SS_1C. Due to the content of available P and Mg, the discussed composts formed the SS_1C>SSF_2C and SSF_3C>SSW_4C and SSW_5C series. However, in terms of available K content: SSF_2C and SSF_3C>SSW_4C and SSW_5C>SS_1C. In the SS_1C compost the organic carbon (TOC) content was slightly higher, but no statistically significant effect of the addition of fly ash and mineral wool on the TOC content in mature composts was confirmed. The addition of ash and mineral wool significantly increased the total nitrogen content. Due to the humification index, the composts formed the series: SSW_4C > SSW_5C > SSF_2C > SS_1C > SSF_3C. The values of the C-KH/C-KF ratio in SS_1C were typical for good quality soils, while in the remaining composts the C-KH/C-KF values were slightly lower. The degree of humification of the assessed composts was characterized by poorly humified organic materials, with the highest values of this indicator found in composts with the addition of mineral wool. The assessed quality indicators of organic matter indicate that the organic matter of composts from sewage sludge with the addition of mineral wool and 100% sludge was of the highest quality. Wastewater treatment plants face enormous economic, environmental, technical, and regulatory challenges, including the high energy costs of their operation, waste generation, and the destination of treated water. In this regard, a proposal was made for the operation of municipal WWTPs in Mexico, based on the symbiosis of the circular economy and eco-innovation as strategies for sustainable change in their operation. As a result, it was possible to obtain an updated diagnosis of the situation of the WWTPs, a proposal for their operation was made, and a circular and innovative business model was established for these plants in order to channel decision-making and visualize the path for the transition of these facilities to sustainable operation. Co-application of sewage sludge (SS) with biochar in landscape/forestry soil is a common strategy for enhancing soil fertility and reducing the bioavailability of potential toxic elements (PTEs) derived from SS, such as Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni. However, due to variability of biochar quality and uncertainties in responses of different plant species, whether the co-application benefits the landscape/forestry plant system remains elusive. Here, we tested the effectiveness of three types of biochar (SS-derived biochar (SB), rice straw-derived biochar (RB), and litter-derived biochar (LB)), which were added to soil amended with SS at 50% (w/w) at rates of 1.5%, 3%, and 4.5% as growth media for the landscape plant Aglaonema modestum (A. modestum). We analyzed the substrate's physicochemical properties and assessed the alleviation of phytotoxicity by biochar application. A significant increase in the fertility index of substrate was observed in all the treatments with biochar addition. The addition of biochar reduced the potential mobility of PTEs while increasing their residual fraction in media. Nonetheless, it has been found that the addition of biochar has ineffective or even negative effects on A. modestum growth (height, biomass, root length) and nutrient absorption. Importantly, the reduction in root biomass and the increased activity of root antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT, and MDA) indicate contamination stress of biochar on the roots of A. modestum. Toxic elements of concern—namely Cu, Cd, and Pb—were not significantly higher in tissues of A. modestum saplings planted in biochar-SS-amended soil. However, elevated levels of other elements that may pose toxicity concerns, such as Ni and Zn, increased in tissues at high biochar dosages. Based on the Entropy–Weight TOPSIS method, it was further confirmed that compared to the treatment without biochar, all treatments except for 3.0% LB application resulted in poorer A. modestum comprehensive growth. Our results emphasize the need for detailed research on the response of specific plants to biochar in specific environments, including plant adaptability and the unexplored toxicity of biochar, to understand the large variations and mechanisms behind these ineffective or negative effects before the large-scale co-utilization of SS and biochar in landscape/forestry soils. In this work, three wheat crops were planted successively under semi-arid climatic conditions; we wished to evaluate the positive and negative effects of the addition of sewage sludge (SS) on plants and soils under the conditions encountered during conventional agricultural management. SS was added to the first two crops at doses equivalent to 170 kg N/ha, and the third crop was left untreated. The soils were sampled initially and at the end of each cultivation period. At the end of the third crop's cultivation period, the heavy metal and organic pollutant contents of grain and straw were analyzed, as well as the presence of Escherichia coli and Salmonella. The amended soils showed a higher N content, greater microbial respiration, and greater dehydrogenase and phosphatase activity than the control. The amended plants showed higher N, Ca, and K contents than the control. Yields were 11% and 16% higher in the SS-amended soils than in the control in the experiments involving the second and third crop, respectively. No problems related to salinity or the heavy metal content were observed in both the soil and plant. However, nitrate content increased in the amended soils compared to the control. Among the persistent organic compounds, only linear alkyl benzene sulphonates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons increased with the addition of SS, but such differences from the control disappeared gradually. No problematic coliform content or presence of Salmonella spp. was detected in the soil or plant. We can thus conclude that SS of adequate quality can be recycled in agricultural soils, but adequate monitoring of the receiving soil is crucial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
