Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are solid-state, single-photon sensitive, pixelated sensors whose usage for scintillation detection has rapidly increased over the past decade. It is known that the avalanche process within the device, which renders a single photon detectable, can also generate secondary photons which may be detected by a separate device. This effect, known as external crosstalk, could potentially degrade the science goals of future xenon dark matter experiments. In this article, we measure the effect of external crosstalk in a dual-phase, liquid xenon time projection chamber fully instrumented with SiPMs. We then consider the implications for a future xenon dark matter experiment utilizing SiPMs and discuss possible solutions.

An array of twelve 0.28 kg lithium molybdate (LMO) low-temperature bolometers equipped with 16 bolometric Ge light detectors, aiming at optimization of detector structure for CROSS and CUPID double-beta decay experiments, was constructed and tested in a low-background pulse-tube-based cryostat at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. Performance of the scintillating bolometers was studied depending on the size of phonon NTD-Ge sensors glued to both LMO and Ge absorbers, shape of the Ge light detectors (circular vs. square, from two suppliers), in different light collection conditions (with and without reflector, with aluminum coated LMO crystal surface). The scintillating bolometer array was operated over 8 months in the low-background conditions that allowed to probe a very low, μBq/kg, level of the LMO crystals radioactive contamination by 228Th and 226Ra.

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), particularly those that are highly doped, possess outstanding properties and have demonstrated tremendous application potential. However, novel fine-tuning strategies are urgently required to enhance the upconversion luminescence (UCL) performance of UCNPs. In this study, a series of core–multishell UCNPs highly doped with Ho3+ and Yb3+ ions were synthesized via the oleate route. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UCL spectra and decay times, and pump power dependency of the synthesized UCNPs were used to examine their morphology, size, and the UCL properties. Ce3+ ions were introduced to enhance Ho3+-based red UCL, and their doping strategy was also optimized based on summarized UCL trends and detailed UCL mechanism analysis. NaHoF 4 :Gd3+@NaGdF 4 :Yb3+,Ce3+@NaGdF 4 :Yb3+ UCNPs that had 10 mol% Ce3+ dopants in their middle shells exhibited better UCL properties than the larger traditional NaGdF 4 :Yb3+,Ce3+,Ho3+ UCNPs, probably because of the combined influence of the energy interactions between the Ce3+ ions and surface groups, sensitizing energy enhancement by active shells, and the positive cooperation between the Ce3+ ions and highly-doped core–shell structures. In this study, the phenomenon of UCL decrease resulting from Ce3+ ion doping was explored. Using unique core–multishell structures with highly-doped activators and sensitizers placed within and outside the structures, respectively, the UCL decrease due to Ce3+ ion doping was attributed to a competition for photons. Doping the UCNPs with Ce3+ ions near the UCNP surfaces favors Ho3+-based red UCL. Our study findings can deepen the understanding of the Ho3+-based UCL mechanisms and increase the potential uses of NaHoF 4 materials in photo-induced therapy. When Ce3+ ions are doped near the nanoparticle surface, they might have energy interactions with surface groups to relieve phonon energy shortage and thus enhance the efficiency of cross-relaxation between Ho3+ and Ce3+ ions. The phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc- w LEDs) are current research hotspot. To meet simultaneously the requirements of high chemical/thermal stability and color-rendering index (CRI), low correlated color temperature (CCT) for actual application is still not be perfectly achieved. Herein, we studied for the first time the incorporation of Ce3+ (blue-emitting) and Mn2+ (orange/red emission) into the dibarium magnesium phosphate ceramic (Ba 2 Mg(PO 4) 2 , BMP) for packaging of pc- w LEDs via remote 'capping' approach, which exhibits highly efficient color-tunable photoluminescence (PL) with splendid chemical/thermal stability, single-phase/full-color-PL, efficient energy transfer (ET). To reduce the impact of heterovalent substitution (Ba2+ ← Ce3+), the monovalent (Li+, Na+, K+) ion, respectively tridoped in BMP: Ce/Mn and played both roles as flux and charge compensator, were also studied/compared on the basis of PL efficiency, where Na+ is the most effective because of the lowest electronegativity mismatch between the Ba2+ and Na+. An alkaline-earth-metal-ion blending strategy via partial replacement of Ba2+ with Sr2+ was implemented to further regulate PL and obtain better parameters of CCT/CRI due to the variations of crystal field splitting. The site occupations of Ce/Na/Sr in Ba sites (CN = 8 and 7) and Mn in Mg site (CN = 6) were based on the comparisons of ion radius and confirmed by XRD/Rietveld analyses, where Ce/Na/Sr ions gave priority to occupy the Ba site with CN = 8 due to their much closer ion radius. Altogether, the stably composition-optimized BMP: Ce/Mn/Na/Sr has great potential application as a single-component color-tunable phosphor in n -UV pumped pc- w LEDs. Open Hardware-based microcontrollers, especially the Arduino platform, have become a comparably easy-to-use tool for rapid prototyping and implementing creative solutions. Such devices in combination with dedicated front-end electronics can offer low-cost alternatives for student projects, slow control and independently operating small-scale instrumentation. The capabilities can be extended to data taking and signal analysis at mid-level rates. Two detector realizations are presented, which cover the readouts of proportional counter tubes and of scintillators or wavelength-shifting fibers with silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The SiPMTrigger realizes a small-scale design for coincidence readout of SiPMs as a trigger or veto detector. It consists of a custom mixed signal front-end board featuring signal amplification, discrimination and a coincidence unit for rates of up to 200 kHz. The nCatcher transforms an Arduino Nano to a proportional counter readout with pulse shape analysis: time over threshold measurement and a 10-bit analog-to-digital converter for pulse heights. The device is suitable for low-to-medium-rate environments up to 5 kHz, where a good signal-to-noise ratio is crucial. We showcase the monitoring of thermal neutrons. Interaction of X-rays with a scintillation detector produces optical photons in the visible range. The spectral and spatial information of the X-ray can be derived by detecting these output photons using a Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM). Two types of detector modules: CeBr 3 and NaI (Tl), coupled with an array of SiPM are presented here, which are being developed for the future space exploration programs. The development of the front end electronics (FEE) for the charge readout from SiPM for X-ray spectrometer application is presented here which is characterized for SiPM's over-voltages and shaping amplifier's time constant. In this article, both the detector modules are subjected to a wide temperature range to establish a relationship of the SiPM's gain, energy resolution and scintillators' output photon yield with ambient temperature. The test results show that energy resolution improves with higher over-voltage of SiPM and also with lower operating temperature. The gain of the SiPM array shows negative temperature dependence of ∼−0.81 %/°C for an over-voltage of 2.5 Volts. To derive the temperature dependency of scintillators' output photons, gain of the SiPM array was made constant by operating it at a fixed over-voltage for a wide temperature range. With the constant gain of SiPM, CeBr 3 scintillator shows negative temperature coefficient of ∼−0.27 %/°C and NaI (Tl) shows positive temperature coefficient of ∼+0.5 %/°C for the light output in the temperature range of −31 °C to +26 °C. Purpose: To directly compare the radiation and imaging isocenters of a proton treatment machine, we developed and evaluated a real‐time radiation isocenter verification system. Methods: The system consists of a plastic scintillator (PI‐200, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Tokyo, Japan), an acrylic phantom, a steel ball on the detachable plate, Raspberry Pi 4 (Raspberry Pi Foundation, London, UK) with camera module, and analysis software implemented through a Python‐based graphical user interface (GUI). After kV imaging alignment of the steel ball, the imaging isocenter defined as the position of the steel ball was extracted from the optical image. The proton star‐shot was obtained by optical camera because the scintillator converted proton beam into visible light. Then the software computed both the minimum circle radius and the radiation isocenter position from the star‐shot. And the deviation between the imaging isocenter and radiation isocenter was calculated. We compared our results with measurements obtained by Gafchromic EBT3 film (Ashland, NJ, USA). Results: The minimum circle radii were averaged 0.29 and 0.41 mm while the position deviations from the radiation isocenter to the laser marker were averaged 0.99 and 1.07 mm, for our system and EBT3 film, respectively. Furthermore, the average position difference between the radiation isocenter and imaging isocenter was 0.27 mm for our system. Our system reduced analysis time by 10 min. Conclusions: Our system provided automated star‐shot analysis with sufficient accuracy, and it is cost‐effective alternative to conventional film‐based method for radiation isocenter verification. Following the discovery of X-rays, scintillators are commonly used as high-energy radiation sensors in diagnostic medical imaging, high-energy physics, astrophysics, environmental radiation monitoring, and security inspections. Conventional scintillators face intrinsic limitations including a low extraction efficiency of scintillated light and a low emission rate, leading to efficiencies that are less than 10 % for commercial scintillators. Overcoming these limitations will require new materials including scintillating nanomaterials ("nanoscintillators"), as well as new photonic approaches that increase the efficiency of the scintillation process, increase the emission rate of materials, and control the directivity of the scintillated light. In this perspective, we describe emerging nanoscintillating materials and three nanophotonic platforms: (i) plasmonic nanoresonators, (ii) photonic crystals, and (iii) high-Q metasurfaces that could enable high performance scintillators. We further discuss how a combination of nanoscintillators and photonic structures can yield a "super scintillator" enabling ultimate spatio-temporal resolution while enabling a significant boost in the extracted scintillation emission. Quasi-zero-dimensional quantum dots (QDs) have garnered significant attention owing to their distinct structural attributes, quantum confinement behaviors, optoelectronic characteristics, etc. Regrettably, their susceptibility to stability poses a challenge. In this context, leveraging rational component regulation and crystallization process optimization strategies, we presented the successful preparation of CdS QDs silicate glass through the amalgamation of melt-quenching and controlled crystallization. The optical and morphological analysis substantiated the accomplishment of in-situ precipitation of CdS QDs within the glass matrix, with grain sizes <20 nm. Integrating CdS QDs into an inorganic glass matrix remarkably augmented its fluorescence thermal stability, enabling the preservation of 85.1 % of the room-temperature luminescent intensity even at an elevated temperature of 150 °C. Moreover, the encapsulated W-LED device by near-UV LED chip, CdS QDs glass, and BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu2+ phosphor exhibited a warm white-light emission characterized by suitable chromaticity coordinates (0.3741, 0.3452) and a notably high color rendering index (CRI = 93). Ultimately, the radioluminescence behavior of CdS QDs glass was unveiled by utilizing it as the scintillator wafer in an X-ray imaging system, which clearly demonstrated the structure of spring encapsulated within an opaque capsule. In a nutshell, these demonstrations unequivocally emphasize the substantial potential merits of CdS QDs glass, particularly in the domains of long-term W-LED lighting and X-ray imaging applications. The overall gain of a scintillation detector is temperature-dependent, leading to a drift in the measured gamma energy spectrum with changes in temperature. To mitigate this effect, a temperature drift correction is essential prior to conducting gamma spectrum analysis. In this study, the detector gain ratio is determined by comparing the positions of the same background peak across different spectra. Subsequently, the original spectrum is adjusted accordingly to obtain a gamma spectrum free from temperature drift. Experimental results demonstrate that after implementing this correction, the relative deviation of the 57Co characteristic peak positions in the gamma spectrum measured by the NaI(Tl) detector is reduced from 18.64% to 0.91%. Furthermore, by performing energy calibration beforehand, the characteristic peak position can be utilized for secondary correction, further minimizing temperature drift. Our findings indicate that the relative deviation of the 22Na characteristic peak positions was reduced, respectively, to 0.51% and 0.46% through secondary correction. This approach, which utilizes the background peak for correction, avoids the need for additional radioactivity or circuitry and effectively mitigates peak drift. Autonomous nuclear reactor monitoring is a key aspect of the International Atomic Energy Agency's strategy to ensure nonproliferation treaty compliance. From the rise of small modular reactor technology, decentralized nuclear reactor fleets may strain the capacities of such monitoring and requires new approaches. We demonstrate the superior capabilities of a gamma detection system to monitor the criticality of a zero power nuclear reactor from beyond typical vessel boundaries, offering a powerful alternative to neutron-based systems by providing direct information on fission chain propagation. Using the case example of the research reactor CROCUS, we demonstrate how two bismuth germanate scintillators placed outside the reactor vessel can precisely observe reactor criticality using so called noise methods and provide core status information in seconds. We developed machine learning algorithms for distinguishing scintillation signals from a plastic-liquid coupled detector known as a phoswich. The challenge lies in discriminating signals from organic scintillators with similar shapes and short decay times. Using a single-readout phoswich detector, we successfully identified y radiation signals from two scintillating components. Our Boosted Decision Tree algorithm demonstrated a maximum discrimination power of 3.02 ± 0.85 standard deviation in the 950 keV region, providing an efficient solution for self-shielding and enhancing radiation detection capabilities. The Digitizer Unit plays an important role in modeling using Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE), a Geant4-based platform used for numerical simulations in medical imaging and radiotherapy. It simulates the response of the photodetection components using a sequence of analytical and semi-analytical models. The Digitizer Unit was written for the first version of GATE approximately 20 years ago. Since then, it has in parts grown in a code that can be hardly maintained. Some parts of the code were unused or duplicated; some of the functionalities were not working anymore. Therefore, the GATE Digitizer Unit update is required in order to incorporate the novelties of Geant4 to update its current version and add new features. In this article, the implementation of the new GATE Digitizer Unit (since version 9.3) is presented. Time‐of‐flight (TOF) technique, traditionally used in high energy physics (HEP) and positron emission tomography (PET), is now being explored for lower energy applications like computed tomography (CT). Regardless of the application, pushing the current boundaries in time resolution calls for novel technologies and materials exhibiting ultra‐fast time response. Semiconductor nanocrystals like cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbBr3), benefiting from quantum confinement effects, feature ultra‐fast decay and, when combined with a suitable bulk scintillator following a heterostructure concept, can also provide the necessary stopping power. In this work, thin films of CsPbBr3 on top of BGO, LYSO:Ce, and GAGG:Ce,Mg wafers are fabricated to test their impact on the single crystal scintillator time resolution under soft X‐rays excitation (about 10 keV). It is demonstrated that the CsPbBr3 layer significantly improves the overall time resolution in all cases, achieving up to a tenfold improvement with BGO and GAGG:Ce,Mg. Under 511 keV γ‐rays, a proof‐of‐concept of the heterostructure design for TOF‐PET using CsPbBr3 thin film deposited on GAGG:Ce,Mg bulk crystal is successfully tested. Shared events depositing energy in both materials are identified, resulting in more than twofold improved coincidence time resolution: 118 ± 4 ps full‐width‐at‐half‐maximum (FWHM) compared to the 272 ± 8 ps of solely GAGG:Ce,Mg. The reduction in the effective dose of evacuated injured persons through contaminated areas of nuclear accidents is an essential emergency services requirement. In this context, there appeared a need to develop a dose-optimised route finding method for firefighting rescue vehicles, which includes the development of a real-time decision support measurement and evaluation system. This determines and visualises the radiation exposure of possible routes in a tested area. The system inside and outside of the vehicle measures the ambient dose equivalent rate, the gamma spectra, and also the airborne radioactive aerosol and iodine levels. The method uses gamma radiation measuring NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors mounted on the outside of the vehicle, to determine the dose rate inside the vehicle using the previously recorded attenuation conversation function, while continuously collecting the air through a filter and using an alpha, beta, and gamma radiation measuring NaI(Tl)+ PVT + ZnS(Ag) scintillator to determine the activity concentration in the air, using these measured values to determine the effective dose for all routes and all kinds of vehicles. The energy-dependent shielding effect of the vehicle, the filtering efficiency of the collective protection equipment, and the vehicle's speed and travel time were taken into account. The results were validated by using gamma point sources with different activity and energy levels. The measurement results under real conditions and available real accident data used in our simulations for three different vehicles and pedestrians proved the applicability of the system. During a nuclear accident based on our model calculations, the inhalation of radioactive aerosols causes a dose almost an order of magnitude higher than the external gamma radiation caused by the fallout contamination. The selection of the appropriate vehicle and its route is determined by the spectrum that can be measured at the accident site but especially by the radioactive aerosol concentration in the air that can be measured in the area. In the case of radiation measuring detectors, the shielding effect of the carrier vehicle must be taken into account, especially in the case of heavy shielding vehicles. In recent years, indirect digital radiography detectors have been actively studied to improve radiographic image performance with low radiation exposure. This study aimed to achieve low-dose radiation imaging with a thick scintillation detector while simultaneously obtaining the resolution of a thin scintillation detector. The proposed method was used to predict the optimal point spread function (PSF) between thin and thick scintillation detectors by considering image quality assessment (IQA). The process of identifying the optimal PSF was performed on each sub-band in the wavelet domain to improve restoration accuracy. In the experiments, the edge preservation index (EPI) values of the non-blind deblurred image with a blurring sigma of σ = 5.13 pixels and the image obtained with optimal parameters from the thick scintillator using the proposed method were approximately 0.62 and 0.76, respectively. The coefficient of variation (COV) values for the two images were approximately 1.02 and 0.63, respectively. The proposed method was validated through simulations and experimental results, and its viability is expected to be verified on various radiological imaging systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proton radiography is a promising development in proton therapy, and researchers are currently exploring optimal detector materials to construct proton radiography detector arrays. High-density glass scintillators may improve integrating-mode proton radiography detectors by increasing spatial resolution and decreasing detector thickness. We evaluated several new scintillators, activated with europium or terbium, with proton response measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, characterizing relative luminosity, ionization quenching, and proton radiograph spatial resolution. We applied a correction based on Birks's analytical model for ionization quenching. The data demonstrate increased relative luminosity with increased activation element concentration, and higher relative luminosity for samples activated with europium. An increased glass density enables more compact detector geometries and higher spatial resolution. These findings suggest that a tungsten and gadolinium oxide-based glass activated with 4% europium is an ideal scintillator for testing in a full-size proton radiography detector. We explored the nonlinear characteristics of energy resolution (ER) for the sealed NaI (Tl) scintillator detector by using a gamma-ray spectroscopy system and Monte Carlo simulation. Our research focused on the two primary factors of energy resolution including the photomultiplier tube (PMT) voltage and the distance between the gamma-ray sources (137Cs and 60Co) and the scintillator detector. The experimental results showed that energy resolution decreased when the PMT voltage increased, and the energy resolution of NaI (Tl) detectors reached a smaller value (6.92%, 6.76%, and 6.56%), especially with the PMT voltage in the range of 575–595 V. In addition, a suitable distance between the gamma-ray source and the scintillator (5 cm) can also effectively reduce the energy resolution. We established the simulation models of the experimental NaI (Tl) detectors and simulated their energy spectra. The simulation results in the peak area agreed with the experimental results. LuBO3 crystallizes in the calcite type (CaCO3) structure and is a widely applied inorganic host for luminescent materials and scintillators. Even though many scientific works have been published concerning the optical properties of rare-earth-doped LuBO3, so far, no study of the emission spectra as function of the excitation energy of such orthoborates has been conducted. Therefore, this work elaborates on the photoluminescence of RE-doped LuBO3 with RE = Ce3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, or Tb3+, while an emphasize is laid on the energy dependence of these four luminescent compounds. The reflection, emission, and excitation spectra were additionally recorded, and the particle size distribution was determined. Calcite type LuBO3 was successfully obtained, and the characteristic RE luminescence was observed. Furthermore, the Gd3+-doped sample showed no scintillation due to its monovalence and a sensitizer is required to transfer the respective energy to the Gd3+-activator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scintillators, which can convert high‐energy particles (X‐rays) into detectable low‐energy ultraviolet–visible–near‐infrared photons, are essential components of X‐ray detectors and show extensive practical applications in nondestructive detection and medical imaging. Traditionally, inorganic scintillators represented by CsI:Tl have achieved definite progress. However, the harsh preparation conditions, high production cost, and poor mechanical properties impede their potential development in the high‐end X‐ray imaging field. Organic–inorganic hybrid metal complexes could be excellent alternatives, by virtue of their structural and spectral tunability, good solution processability, and excellent photophysical properties. This review mainly focuses on eco‐friendly lead‐free metal (Mn2+, Cu+, Sb3+, Sn2+, Ge2+, Ln3+, etc.) complex scintillators. The luminescence mechanisms are introduced and the scintillation performance, such as light yield, limit of detection, imaging resolution, etc., is highlighted. Moreover, the current challenges and perspectives in this emerging field are described. Ce-doped gadolinium gallium aluminum oxide (Ce: GGAG) precursors were first prepared by the microwave-assisted homogeneous precipitation method (MAHP). Thermal gravity-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area analysis (BET) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were employed to investigate the crystal structure, phase evolution and morphologies of the Ce: GGAG precursors and powders. The influence of Ga ion concentration in the salt solution on the properties of Ce: GGAG powders was investigated. All the precursors were transformed into single-phase GGAG after being calcined at 950 °C in a furnace for 3 h. Monodispersed Ce: GGAG powders were obtained as the Ga ion concentration was lower than 0.06 mol/L. Single-phase and dense Ce: GGAG ceramics were obtained after sintering at 1600 °C in a flowing oxygen atmosphere for 10 h. Specifically, the Ce: GGAG ceramic reached its maximum density of ~6.68 g/cm3, which was close to its theoretical density of 6.70 g/cm3, and exhibited the highest optical transmittance of 65.2% at 800 nm after hot isostatic pressing sintering (HIP) as the Ga ion concentration was 0.02 mol/L. The decay time and light yield of the GGAG ceramic were 35 ns and 35,000 ± 1250 ph/MeV, respectively, suggesting that Ce: GGAG ceramics prepared using MAHP-synthesized nanopowders are promising for scintillation applications. (1) Background: Generally, in nuclear medicine and nuclear power plants, energy spectrum measurements and radioactive nuclide identification are required for evaluation of strong radiation fields to ensure nuclear safety and security; thereby, damage is prevented to nuclear facilities caused by natural disasters or the criminal smuggling of nuclear materials. High count rates can lead to signal accumulation, negatively affecting the performance of gamma spectrometers, and in severe cases, even damaging the detectors. Higher pulse throughput with better energy resolution is the ultimate goal of a gamma-ray spectrometer. Traditionally, pileup pulses, which cause dead time and affect throughput, are rejected to maintain good energy resolution. (2) Method: In this paper, an ultra-throughput boost (UTB) off-line processing method was used to improve the throughput and reduce the pileup effect of the spectrometer. Firstly, by fitting the impulse signal of the detector, the response matrix was built by the functional model of a dual exponential tail convolved with the Gaussian kernel; then, a quadratic programming method based on a non-negative least squares (NNLS) algorithm was adopted to solve the constrained optimization problem for the inversion. (3) Results: Both the simulated and experimental results of the UTB method show that most of the impulses in the pulse sequence from the scintillator detector were restored to δ-like pulses, and the throughput of the UTB method for the NaI(Tl) spectrometer reached 207 kcps with a resolution of 7.71% @661.7 keV. A reduction was also seen in the high energy pileup phenomenon. (4) Conclusions: We conclude that the UTB method can restore individual and piled-up pulses to δ-like sequences, effectively boosting pulse throughput and suppressing high-energy tailing and sum peaks caused by the pileup effect at the cost of a slight loss in energy resolution. As the technology to deliver precise and very high radiotherapeutic doses with narrow margins grows to better serve patients with complex radiotherapeutic needs, so does the need for sensors and sensor systems that can reliably deliver multi-point dose monitoring and dosimetry for enhanced safety and access. To address this need, we investigated a novel five-point scintillator system for simultaneously sampling points across a 74 MeV proton beam with a Hamamatsu 16-channel MPPC array. We studied the response across beam widths from 25 mm down to 5 mm in diameter and in multiple depths to observe beam penumbrae and output factors as well as depth–dose. We found through comparison to ionization chambers and radiochromic film that the array is capable of measurements accurate to within 8% in the centre of proton beams from 5 to 25 mm in diameter, and within 2% at 3.5 cm depth in water. The results from three trials are repeatable after calibration to within <1%. Overall, the five optical fibre sensor system shows promise as a fast, multipoint relative dosimetry system. Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a binary cancer therapy where a low energy neutron beam is incident upon a patient who has been administered a tumour-seeking 10B loaded compound. The neutron capture reaction on 10B results in the production of two short range particles, 7Li and 4He, that deposit all of their energies within the targeted cell. However, accurate, online dosimetry during BNCT is challenging as it requires knowledge of both the neutron fluence and 10B concentration in cells. An additional product in the neutron capture reaction on 10B is a 478 keV prompt gamma ray, and if the production vertices of these gamma rays could be imaged by an external camera, the density of the vertices could be used to infer the dose delivered to the patient. In this study, the feasibility of using an array of LaBr3 scintillators as a modified Compton camera for prompt gamma imaging during BNCT was investigated using Geant4 simulations. These simulations demonstrated that a phantom containing a 3 cm diameter region of 400 ppm 10B could be reconstructed using clinically relevant neutron fluences. A facile and low-cost strategy to fabricate CsPbBr3 single crystals is essential for developing perovskite optoelectronic devices. Herein, we have presented a room temperature anti-solvent precipitate method for growing sub-centimeter-sized CsPbBr3 single crystals. The as-prepared CsPbBr3 single crystal has an orthorhombic structure, and phase transition occurs as the measured temperature increases. The as-grown CsPbBr3 single crystal also shows abundant surface morphologies including footsteps, precipitated crystals, cracks, and pits. Subsequently, a metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM)-structured photodetector was fabricated based on the CsPbBr3 single crystal. Under 525 nm green light illumination, the photodetector exhibits an obvious response and the photocurrent linearly increases with the increase in the light intensity. The rise time of the photodetector increases from 0.82 s to 2.19 s as the light intensity is enhanced from 15 mW/cm2 to 160 mW/cm2, indicating that more time is required to reach to a stable photocurrent. However, the decay time is as fast as ~0.82 ms, irrelevant of the light intensity. The photocurrent, under continuous light illumination, was further studied and this indicates that a stronger light intensity can accelerate the attenuation of the device. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gamma-ray spectroscopy is an effective technique for radioactive material characterization, routine inventory verification, nuclear safeguards, health physics, and source search scenarios. Gamma-ray spectrometers typically cannot be operated in the immediate vicinity of nuclear reactors due to their high flux fields and their resulting inability to resolve individual pulses. Low-power reactor facilities offer the possibility to study reactor gamma-ray fields, a domain of experiments hitherto poorly explored. In this work, we present gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments performed with various detectors in two reactors: The EPFL zero-power research reactor CROCUS, and the neutron beam facility at the Ohio State University Research Reactor (OSURR). We employed inorganic scintillators (CeBr3), organic scintillators (trans-stilbene and organic glass), and high-purity germanium semiconductors (HPGe) to cover a range of typical—and new—instruments used in gamma-ray spectroscopy. The aim of this study is to provide a guideline for reactor users regarding detector performance, observed responses, and therefore available information in the reactor photon fields up to 2 MeV. The results indicate several future prospects, such as the online (at criticality) monitoring of fission products (like Xe, I, and La), dual-particle sensitive experiments, and code validation opportunities. (1) Background: High dose gradients and manual steps in brachytherapy treatment procedures can lead to dose errors which make the use of in vivo dosimetry (IVD) highly recommended for verifying brachytherapy treatments. A new procedure was presented to obtain a calibration factor which allows fast and robust calibration of plastic scintillation detector (PSD) probes for the geometry of a compact phantom using Monte Carlo simulations. Additionally, characterization of PSD energy, angular, and temperature dependences was performed. (2) Methods: PENELOPE/PenEasy code was used to obtain the calibration factor. To characterize the energy dependence of the PSD, the signal was measured at different radial and transversal distances. The sensitivity to the angular position was characterized in axial and azimuthal planes. (3) Results: The calibration factor obtained allows for an absorbed dose to water determination in full scatter conditions from ionization measured in a mini polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) phantom. The energy dependence of the PSD along the radial distances obtained was (2.3 ± 2.1)% (k = 1). The azimuthal angular dependence measured was (2.6 ± 3.4)% (k = 1). The PSD response decreased by (0.19 ± 0.02)%/°C with increasing detector probe temperature. (4) Conclusions: The energy, angular, and temperature dependence of a PSD is compatible with IVD. Er3+ doped high density germanate glasses with compositions of 50GeO 2 -10BaO–10Al 2 O 3 -15Lu 2 O 3 -(15-x) La 2 O 3 -xEr 2 O 3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0, in mol%) have been prepared by the melt-quenching method. The optical and physical properties of the samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), density, transmittance spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and X-ray excited luminescence (XEL) spectra. The densities were in the range from 5.90 to 6.07 g/cm3. The strong green emissions around 552 nm of Er3+ were observed upon the excitations of 378 nm light and the X-ray, and the lifetimes of 552 nm emission were in the range of 20.88–96.47 μs. The Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder (TIGER) family of instruments is optimized to measure the relative abundances of the rare, ultra-heavy galactic cosmic rays (UHGCRs) with atomic number (Z) Z ≥ 30. Observing the UHGCRs places a premium on exposure that the balloon-borne SuperTIGER achieved with a large area detector (5.6 m2) and two Antarctic flights totaling 87 days, while the smaller (∼1 m2) TIGER for the International Space Station (TIGERISS) aims to achieve this with a longer observation time from one to several years. SuperTIGER uses a combination of scintillator and Cherenkov detectors to determine charge and energy. TIGERISS will use silicon strip detectors (SSDs) instead of scintillators, with improved charge resolution, signal linearity, and dynamic range. Extended single-element resolution UHGCR measurements through 82Pb will cover elements produced in s-process and r-process neutron capture nucleosynthesis, adding to the multi-messenger effort to determine the relative contributions of supernovae (SNe) and Neutron Star Merger (NSM) events to the r-process nucleosynthesis product content of the galaxy. The search for low-energy antideuterons in cosmic rays allows the addressing of fundamental physics problems testing for the presence of primordial antimatter and the nature of Dark Matter. The PHeSCAMI (Pressurized Helium Scintillating Calorimeter for AntiMatter Identification) project aims to exploit the long-living metastable states of the helium target for the identification of low-energy antideuterons in cosmic rays. A space-based pressurized helium calorimeter would provide a characteristic identification signature based on the coincident detection of a prompt scintillation signal emitted by the antideuteron energy loss during the slowing-down phase in the gas, and the (≈µs) delayed scintillation signal provided by the charged pions produced in the subsequent annihilation. Due to the rapid advancements in medical radiography, nondestructive inspection, and radiation detection, there is an increasing demand for scintillators that offer both cost-effectiveness and high-resolution X-ray imaging. In this study, we have successfully synthesized transparent glass-ceramic scintillator by embedding Tb3+-doped NaLu 2 F 7 nanocrystals in a glass matrix. This scintillator demonstrates excellent spatial resolution of 20 lp/mm in X-ray imaging due to its high transmittance (over 90% at 550 nm) and intense luminescent intensity when excited by X-ray (151% higher than that of the Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 scintillator). More significantly, the as-synthesized scintillator exhibits exceptional stabilities at high temperature, moisture levels, and moderate radiation exposure. Notably, any decline in performance caused by long-term exposure to high-dose X-ray can be fully recovered through heat treatment at 350 °C for 30 min. These findings highlight the great potential of NaLu 2 F 7 :Tb3+ glass ceramics as suitable options for high-resolution and retrievable X-ray imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The large size (4 cm × 4 cm × 1 cm) Ce3+-doped high gadolinium oxyfluoride glass with density of 5.83 g/cm³ was prepared by the melt quench method at 1220 °C. The glass is colorless and transparent over the visible range. The prolonged decay time under 275 nm UV light demonstrates the energy transfer from Gd3+ ions to Ce3+ ions. The X-ray excited luminescence spectra (XEL) show the emission peak corresponds to the 5d→4f transitions of Ce3+ ion. The integral emission intensity of glass was compared with that of bismuth germanate oxide (BGO) crystals. The scintillation property of glass was studied under the γ -ray from 137Cs source and a clear energy peak was observed with light yield (LY) over 1100 ph/MeV. The scintillation decay time comprises fast and slow components. All results presented in this work indicate the appropriate potential to be high-energy rays detecting material for CEPC. Commercial white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) usually face problems such as lack of red emission, color difference caused by different degradation rates of multiphase phosphors and the poor thermal stability of the organic encapsulants. The development of new single-phase phosphors and glass can solve these problems well. Sr 3 B 14 O 24 :RE3+ (RE = Ce, Tb, Sm, Eu) phosphors and glass were synthesized by solid-phase method. The obtained Sr 3 B 14 O 24 :RE3+ (RE = Ce, Tb, Sm, Eu) samples showed multicolor emission including blue, green, orange and red, respectively. The optimal excitation wavelength of these samples was located in the blue or ultraviolet (UV) light regions, which were well matched with the blue-violet light chips to manufacture WLEDs. More interestingly, UV absorption was found in Sr 3 B 14 O 24 :Ce3+/4+ glass samples. The doping of dual-valence cerium ions could enhance the shielding performance in the light of inferences drawn from the UV-Vis absorption and transmission spectra of glass samples. By co-doping different concentrations of Cs+ ions in Sr 3 B 14 O 24 :Ce3+/4+ glass samples, the function of near infrared (NIR) shielding was also realized. Angular resolution is crucial for the detailed study of gamma-ray sources and current Cherenkov telescopes (e.g., HESS, MAGIC, and VERITAS) that operate below tens of TeV. Several gamma-ray sources with a photon energy larger than 100 TeV have been revealed by the LHAASO in recent years; the angular resolution of the LHAASO is around  0.3 ∘ . A gamma-ray detector with an angular resolution of less than  0.1 ∘  operating beyond 100 TeV is needed to study the detailed morphology of ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources further. The cost-effectiveness is crucial for such large-area detectors. In this paper, the impact of telescope aperture, field of view, pixel size, optical point spread function, and signal integration time window on angular resolution is studied. Cloud and bubble chambers have historically been used for particle detection, capitalizing on supersaturation and superheating, respectively. Here, we present new results from a prototype snowball chamber, in which an incoming particle triggers the crystallization of a purified, supercooled liquid. We demonstrate, for the first time, simulation agreement with our first results from 5 years ago: the higher temperature of the freezing of water and significantly shorter time spent supercooled compared to the control in the presence of a Cf-252 fission neutron source. This is accomplished by combining Geant4 modeling of neutron interactions with the Seitz nucleation model used in superheated bubble chambers, including those seeking dark matter. We explore the possible implications of using this new technology for GeV-scale WIMP searches, especially in terms of spin-dependent proton coupling, and report the first supercooling of WbLS (water-based liquid scintillator). Source localisation and real-time dose verification are at the forefront of medical research in brachytherapy, an oncological radiotherapy procedure based on radioactive sources implanted in the patient body. The ORIGIN project aims to respond to this medical community's need by targeting the development of a multi-point dose mapping system based on fibre sensors integrating a small volume of scintillating material into the tip and interfaced with silicon photomultipliers operated in counting mode. In this paper, a novel method for the selection of the optimal silicon photomultipliers to be used is presented, as well as a laboratory characterisation based on dosimetric figures of merit. More specifically, a technique exploiting the optical cross-talk to maintain the detector linearity in high-rate conditions is demonstrated. Lastly, it is shown that the ORIGIN system complies with the TG43-U1 protocol in high and low dose rate pre-clinical trials with actual brachytherapy sources, an essential requirement for assessing the proposed system as a dosimeter and comparing the performance of the system prototype against the ORIGIN project specifications. Medical imaging instrumentation is mostly based on the use of luminescent materials coupled to optical sensors. These materials are employed in the form of granular screens, structured crystals, single transparent crystals, ceramics, etc. Storage phosphors are also incorporated in particular X-ray imaging systems. The physical properties of these materials should match the criteria required by the detective systems employed in morphological and functional biomedical imaging. The systems are analyzed based on theoretical frameworks emanating from the linear cascaded systems theory as well as the signal detection theory. Optical diffusion has been studied by different methodological approaches, such as experimental measurements and analytical modeling, including geometrical optics and Monte Carlo simulation. Analysis of detector imaging performance is based on image quality metrics, such as the luminescence emission efficiency (LE), the modulation transfer function (MTF), the noise power spectrum (NPS), and the detective quantum efficiency (DQE). Scintillators and phosphors may present total energy conversion on the order of 0.001–0.013 with corresponding DQE in the range of 0.1–0.6. The 3He gas is commonly used for the detection of thermal neutrons. However, with the depletion of 3He gas, there is a need to develop new solid scintillators for thermal neutron detection. Solid scintillators containing 6Li, which have large neutron capture cross-sections and a large amount of energy released by transmutation reactions, are commonly used as alternative candidates. However, only single-crystal scintillators are currently used, and their 6Li concentration is limited by their chemical composition. In this study, we designed, grew, and evaluated a new eutectic scintillator, Rb2CeCl5/LiCl, which can improve the 6Li concentration compared with single-crystal scintillators. Rb2CeCl5, which was selected as the scintillator phase, has excellent scintillator properties (light yield: 36,000 photons/MeV, decay time: mostly 24 ns, slightly 153 ns), and is less deliquescent than other halide scintillators. The crystal grown using the vertical Bridgman method exhibited a eutectic phase composed of Rb2CeCl5 and LiCl. The eutectic crystals exhibited Ce3+ 5d-4f emissions, with a peak between 360 and 370 nm. The Rb2CeCl5 phase was identified as the luminescent phase via cathodoluminescence mapping, and 16,000 photons/neutron of the light yield and 56.1 ns of the decay time were observed. This study indicates that the Rb2CeCl5/LiCl eutectic scintillator is a promising candidate for use in thermal neutron detectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High‐pressure chemistry has provided a huge boost to the development of scientific community. Pressure‐induced emission (PIE) in halide perovskites is gradually showing its unique charm in both pressure sensing and optoelectronic device applications. Moreover, the PIE retention of halide perovskites under ambient conditions is of great commercial value. Herein, we mainly focus on the potential applications of PIE and PIE retention in metal halide perovskites for scintillators and solid‐state lighting. Based on the performance requirements of scintillator and single‐component white light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs), the significance of PIE and PIE retention is critically clarified, aiming to design and synthesize materials used for high‐performance optoelectronic devices. This perspective not only demonstrates promising applications of PIE in the fields of scintillators and WLEDs, but also provides potential applications in display imaging and anti‐counterfeiting of PIE materials. Ce-doped 20CsCl-20SrCl2-60ZnCl2 glasses were investigated for their optical and scintillation properties. Under X-ray irradiation, a broad emission peak at approximately 350 nm with a shoulder peak at 375 nm was observed, and its origin was attributed to Ce3+. In the pulse height spectrum under 241Am a-ray, the glass doped with 0.05% Ce exhibited the highest light yield (LY) of 25 ph/MeV (138 ph/5.5MeV-a) among zinc-halide-based glasses. Eu-doped SrF² transparent ceramics were synthesized by spark plasma sintering, and their optical and scintillation properties were studied. The Eu-doped SrF² transparent ceramics showed an emission peak at 410 nm with excitations of 250 and 350 nm, and the PL quantum yield of the 0.1% Eu-doped SrF² transparent ceramic was 8.1%. Moreover, the Eu-doped SrF² transparent ceramics showed scintillation with emission peaks at 300 and 410 nm under X-ray irradiation. Based on the measured scintillation decay times, the origins of the emissions at 300 and 410 nm were self-trapped excitation and 5d-4f transitions of Eu2+ ions, respectively. The photoluminescence and scintillation properties of KI:Eu synthesized by the vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger method were investigated. All the samples showed a broad peak at 430-450 nm under UV and X-ray irradiations, and the origin of emission was ascribed to the 4f65d1-4f7 transition of Eu2+. Furthermore, a tail emission at 500 nm under X-ray irradiation was observed, the origin of which could be ascribed to color centers associated with oxygen impurities. According to the pulse height spectra, the highest light yield (LY) under 241Am ?-ray (60 keV) irradiation was 3400 photons/MeV among the prepared samples. Tb-doped SrLu2O4 single crystals were grown by the floating zone method, and their optical and scintillation properties were evaluated. Regarding the scintillation properties, all the prepared crystals showed the sharp emission peaks assigned to Tb3+ 4f-4f transitions in the range of 350-650 nm. The obtained decay times of 1.0-1.6 ms were typical values for the Tb3+ 4f-4f transitions. From the results of the pulse area spectra, the 1.0% Tb-doped crystal showed the highest light yield of 19600 photons/MeV among the prepared crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The photoluminescence (PL), scintillation, and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) properties of Eu-doped (0.01, 0.1, and 1%) Al2O3 single crystals grown by the floating zone method were investigated systematically. The PL of the samples showed several sharp emission peaks across 550-750 nm originating from the 4f-4f transitions of Eu3+ and the 3d-3d transitions of Cr3+ impurity ions. The scintillation spectrum of the samples showed a broad emission peak at 320 nm due to the F+ center and an emission peak at 700 nm due to the 3d-3d transitions of Cr3+ impurity ions. All the samples showed TSL glow peaks at around 200, 320, and 375 °C. The TSL intensity of the 1% Eu-doped sample was the highest among the present three samples, and the TSL response was proportional to the irradiated X-ray dose in the range from 10 to 1000 mGy. The photoluminescence (PL) and scintillation properties of Ce-doped BaHfO3 crystals were investigated. The Ce-doped BaHfO3 crystal is transparent and colorless after annealing treatment under a reduction condition. The broad luminescence band at ~370 nm was observed under ~280 nm excitation with the decay time of ~17 ns. The X-ray-induced scintillation spectra also showed the broad luminescence band at ~380 nm with a fast decay. The origin of the broad luminescence band at ~380 nm is attributed to the 5d-4f transition of Ce3+. The pulse height distribution under 137Cs gamma ray irradiation using Ce-doped BaHfO3 exhibited a distinguishable photoabsorption peak. The light yield of Ce-doped BaHfO3 is ~1600 photons/MeV.
