Salt (NaCl), is an essential nutrient for survival, while excessive salt can be detrimental. In the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, internal taste organs in the pharynx are critical gatekeepers impacting the decision to accept or reject a food. Currently, our understanding of the mechanism through which pharyngeal gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) sense high salt are rudimentary. Here, we found that a member of the ionotropic receptor family, Ir60b, is expressed exclusively in a pair of GRNs activated by high salt. Using a two-way choice assay (DrosoX) to measure ingestion volume, we demonstrate that IR60b and two co-receptors IR25a and IR76b are required to prevent high salt consumption. Mutants lacking external taste organs but retaining the internal taste organs in the pharynx exhibit much higher salt avoidance than flies with all taste organs but missing the three IRs. Our findings highlight the vital role for IRs in a pharyngeal GRN to control ingestion of high salt.

BACKGROUND: Information on salt consumption patterns is needed to inform the need for and design of salt reduction strategies. OBJECTIVES: In northern Ghana, this study aimed to estimate household consumption of salt, including salt from bouillon, and compare (estimated) women and childrens salt intake to global recommendations; to estimate the proportion of salt consumed from bouillon; and to identify factors, including knowledge, attitudes, and practices, associated with household salt consumption. METHODS: Employing mixed-methods methodology, we conducted a pilot survey (n = 369 households enrolled) and focus group discussions (FGDs; n = 20) in Tolon and Kumbungu districts (14 urban, 14 rural clusters) (clinicaltrials.gov registry: NCT04632771). Drought and salt stress are two important environmental factors that significantly restrict plant growth and reproduction. Malate dehydrogenase is essential to life as it is engaged in numerous physiological processes in cells, particularly those related to abiotic stress reactions. However, a complete understanding of MDH family members in kenaf is not clear yet. In this study, subcellular localization analysis and a yeast transcriptional activation assay revealed that HcMDH1 was localized in chloroplasts but had no transcriptional activation activity. When exposed to salt or drought stress, yeast cells expressing the HcMDH1 gene exhibit an increased survival rate. Overexpression of HcMDH1 in Arabidopsis increased seed germination rate and root growth when transgenic lines were exposed to varying concentrations of mannitol and NaCl. Subsequent physiological studies revealed that transgenic lines had higher concentrations of soluble carbohydrates, proline, and chlorophyll and lower concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, inhibiting HcMDH1 in kenaf using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) decreased salt and drought tolerance due to elevated ROS and MDA levels. In these silenced lines, the expression of six essential genes engaged in stress-resistance and photosynthesis, namely HcGAPDH, HcGLYK, HcFBA, HcFBPase, HcPGA, and HcLSD, is significantly altered under salt and drought stress. In summary, HcMDH1 is a complex and positive regulatory gene that plays a key role in regulating chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity and osmotic regulation under salt and drought stress, which may have implications for kenaf transgenic breeding. The objective behind developing the nanoporous alumino-borosilicate (AlBS) was to remove strontium ion (Sr2+) from liquid waste and subsequently stabilize it. The sorption capacity of the nanoporous AlBS was assessed in relation to various experimental factors, including contact time, temperature, initial pH solution, and initial concentration of Sr ions. According to the obtained results, nanoporous AlBS shows a maximum Sr2+ sorption capacity of 163.08 mg/g. In order to achieve stable immobilization of the sorbed Sr ions, heat treatments at different temperatures were applied to the Sr-containing nanoporous AlBS. Various eluents were used in the leach tests to examine the Sr ions leaching from heat-treated materials. Only 3.43% of the Sr ions initially adsorbed in the nanoporous AlBS matrix was washed out with 1 M sodium chloride eluent, showing that heating the sample to around 1100 °C successfully trapped Sr ions in the nanoporous AlBS matrix. Urban and peri-urban lakes experience a wider array of environmental stressors, and often at a higher intensity, than their rural counterparts, including road salt runoff. A paleolimnological approach was used to determine pre-disturbance limnological conditions and to evaluate the impact of environmental stressors (nutrient inputs, climate change, and winter de-icing salt) on the long-term (~ 150 years) water quality of a small urban kettle lake in the Oak Ridges Moraine near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Specifically, we examined Cladocera and diatom subfossils in 210Pb-dated sediment cores from a lake with elevated measured chloride concentrations, Haynes Lake (Cl− = 201 mg/l), and a nearby reference lake located in a conservation area (Swan Lake, Cl− = 28 mg/l). In Haynes Lake, Cladocera compositional change is consistent with increasing Cl− concentrations, showing a shift from a Bosmina spp.-dominated cladoceran assemblage to a Daphnia spp.-dominated assemblage. Concurrently, we recorded increases in the relative abundances of the diatom taxon Achnanthidium minutissimum and benthic fragilarioid taxa. These biological changes coincided closely with the onset of road salting in the region (ca. 1940s). The reference site (Swan Lake), located ~ 1 km from our salt-impacted site, displayed only minimal changes in both Cladocera and diatom assemblages, suggesting road development and salting within the Haynes Lake watershed had a larger impact than regional stressors (i.e., climate). Soil salinity pollution is increasing worldwide, seriously affecting plant growth and crop production. Existing reports on how potassium indole-3-butyric acid (IBAK) regulates rice salt stress adaptation by affecting rice carbon metabolism, transcription factor (TF) genes expression, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites still have limitations. In this study, an IBAK solution at 40 mg L-1 was sprayed on rice leaves at the seedling stage. The results showed that the IBAK application could promote shoot and root growth, decrease sucrose and fructose content, increase starch content, and enhance acid invertase (AI) and neutral invertase (NI) activity under salt stress, indicating altered carbon allocation. Furthermore, the expression of TF genes belonging to the ethylene responsive factor (ERF), WRKY, and basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) families was influenced by IBAK. Many key genes (OsSSIIc, OsSHM1, and OsPPDKB) and metabolites (2-oxoglutaric acid, fumaric acid, and succinic acid) were upregulated in the carbon metabolism pathway. In addition, this study highlighted the role of IBAK in regulating the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites pathway, potentially contributing to rice stress adaptability. Roadside habitat has been touted as a conservation opportunity for insect pollinators, including the declining monarch butterfly. The spectacular monarch migration is under threat from the loss of habitat and the decline of their milkweed host plants. In the northern part of their range, roadsides could potentially produce millions of monarchs annually due to high densities of milkweed; however, roadside milkweed can accumulate chemicals from roads, such as sodium from road salt. Controlled lab studies have shown mixed effects of sodium on monarch development: small increases can be beneficial as sodium is an important micronutrient in brain and muscle development, but large increases can sometimes decrease survival. It is unclear how dietary sodium affects performance in ecologically relevant conditions and the migration itself. In this experiment, we raised monarchs outdoors, in migration‐inducing conditions, on milkweed sprayed with three levels of sodium chloride. We released 2464 tagged monarchs and held an additional 246 for further lab assays. While our recovery rates to the wintering grounds were low (N = 7 individuals), individuals from all three sodium chloride treatments made it to Mexico. Butterflies reared on control milkweed and low salt concentrated sodium in their tissues, while those on high salt diets excreted sodium, suggesting high salt levels were above a physiological optimum. There were no effects of treatment on wing coloration, survival, body size, immunity, or parasite prevalence. Taken together, our results suggest that monarchs are robust to levels of sodium in milkweeds found along roadsides, which is promising with respect to the toxicity of roadside plants. The aluminum content of concentrated (27 wt%) sodium chloride solutions could be crucial for large‐scale chlor‐alkali‐based industries applying membrane cell electrolysis. Thus, a facile method which enables a fast and reliable protocol to determine the Al content of these solutions on ppb scale in industrial environments is fundamentally important. It was demonstrated that the increased sensitivity of colorful Al‐ECR (eriochrome cyanine R) complex by the use of a cationic surfactant and specific biological buffers could effectively indicate the Al content in an extended pH interval of a concentrated saline medium under industrial conditions. The dependence of the analytical protocol on pH, temperature, time, wavelength, and the salinity of the medium was investigated. It was shown that the absorbance‐based measurements of the solution should be performed at least 2–4 h after its preparation. By applying the selected two Good's buffers (HEPES: 4‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐1‐piperazineethanesulfonic acid, MOPS: 3‐(N‐morpholino)‐propanesulfonic acid) and Tris (tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane), 32.8–38.1 % increase in the sensitivity was achieved for saturated NaCl solutions. In the last century, human activities were the primary cause of air, water, and soil contamination. However, in the twenty-first century, while pollutants like sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) remain significant, microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a new global environmental concern. Microplastics are plastic fragments that are less than 5 mm in diameter. Their widespread distribution in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems has adverse impacts on various ecological systems. The presence of MPs has been well documented in diverse matrices, such as table salt, drinking water, indoor and outdoor air, beer, cold drinks, aquatic organisms, plants, and earthworms. The potential adverse effects of MPs consumption have been reported in various organisms, including earthworms and aquatic fishes; however, their potential effects on human health through respiratory, dietary, and other exposures are still being elucidated. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on potential sources, quantities present in water, table salt, air, and possible routes in the human body through different trophic levels. Furthermore, this paper reviews insights into the movement and accumulation of MPs at different trophic levels (i.e., aquatic, and terrestrial organisms) and their impacts on the cycling of soil carbon and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus). The TATA-box binding protein (TBP) and TBP-associated factors (TAFs) constitute the transcription factor IID (TFIID), a crucial component of RNA polymerase II, essential for transcription initiation and regulation. Several TFIID subunits are shared with the Spt–Ada–Gcn5–acetyltransferase (SAGA) coactivator complex. Recent research has revealed the roles of TBP and TAFs in organogenesis and stress adaptation. In this study, we identified 1 TBP and 21 putative TAFs in the mungbean genome, among which VrTAF5, VrTAF6, VrTAF8, VrTAF9, VrTAF14, and VrTAF15 have paralogous genes. Their potential involvement in abiotic stress responses was also investigated here, including high salinity, water deficit, heat, and cold. The findings indicated that distinct genes exerted predominant influences in the response to different abiotic stresses through potentially unique mechanisms. Specifically, under salt stress, VrTBP, VrTAF2, and VrTAF15–1 were strongly induced, while VrTAF10, VrTAF11, and VrTAF13 acted as negative regulators. In the case of water-deficit stress, it was likely that VrTAF1, VrTAF2, VrTAF5–2, VrTAF9, and VrTAF15–1 were primarily involved. Additionally, in response to changes in ambient temperature, it was possible that genes such as VrTAF5–1, VrTAF6–1, VrTAF9–2, VrTAF10, VrTAF13, VrTAF14b–2, and VrTAF15–1 might play a dominant role. With a growing number of PCMs and new, suitable PCM candidates, an overview is not only important, but also increasingly complex. Classification of PCM was thus changed significantly in the past decades. A review of classification of PCMs from recent years shows that not only different classification criteria are used, but more important that they are often mixed, used inconsistently, even without a clear goal. Focusing on the main goal of current classification schemes, to give an overview of the material options for the search for new, suitable PCM candidates, including already established PCMs, a consistent classification is developed in a desktop study. For this, first, the general options for classification criteria are reviewed, and then the appropriate ones selected. Then, based on them a new, revised PCM classification is suggested. It is specifically detailed with regard to mixtures; for binary mixtures it is based on a literature review performed within the study. Co-Al porous materials were fabricated by thermal explosion (TE) reactions from Co and Al powders in a 1:1 ratio using NaCl as a space retainer. The effects of the NaCl content on the temperature profiles, phase structure, volume change, density, pore distribution and antioxidation behavior were investigated. The results showed that the sintered product of Co and Al powders was solely Co-Al intermetallic, while the final product was Co4Al13 with an abundant Co phase and minor Co2Al5 and Co-Al phases after added NaCl dissolved out, due to the high Tig and low Tc. The open porosity of sintered Co-Al compound was sensibly improved to 79.5% after 80 wt.% of the added NaCl dissolved out. Moreover, porous Co-Al intermetallic exhibited an inherited pore structure, including large pores originating from the dissolution of NaCl and small pores in the matrix caused by volume expansion due to TE reaction. The Aromatic Silica Gel derivatives were prepared from the preparation of the Dasanium salt in a cooled acid medium, and mixed with the silica gel salt to obtain organic silica ; and from the Infrared Spectrum (FT - IR) clear values of the aromatic ring at the stress stretch (ѵC = C) at the range (1515 – 1645) cm-1. Behavioral plasticity allows animals to modulate their behavior based on experience and environmental conditions. Caenorhabditis elegans exhibits experience-dependent changes in its behavioral responses to various modalities of sensory cues, including odorants, salts, temperature, and mechanical stimulations. Most of these forms of behavioral plasticity, such as adaptation, habituation, associative learning, and imprinting, are shared with other animals. The C. elegans nervous system is considerably tractable for experimental studies—its function can be characterized and manipulated with molecular genetic methods, its activity can be visualized and analyzed with imaging approaches, and the connectivity of its relatively small number of neurons are well described. Therefore, C. elegans provides an opportunity to study molecular, neuronal, and circuit mechanisms underlying behavioral plasticity that are either conserved in other animals or unique to this species. To comprehensively investigate the impact of chloride salt erosion on the multiscale bonding behavior between asphalt and aggregate, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and pull-off tests were employed. A thorough study was conducted on the microsurface morphology, nanoscale surface roughness, microsurface energy, and macro pull-off strength between asphalt and aggregate under different chloride salt concentrations. Furthermore, the relationship between the microscopic structural characteristics of asphalt and macroscopic bonding performance was analyzed. The results revealed that, except for the crumb rubber (CR) modified asphalt, the surface of asphalt exhibited an alternation of peaks and valleys forming a beelike structure both before and after chloride salt erosion. The erosion caused the reaggregation of asphalt surface particles, resulting in prominent nano-protrusions and white spots, thereby increasing the surface height and roughness of asphalt. In chloride salt solutions, the infiltration of ions and water molecules into the asphalt may lead to irregular depressions and pits on the surface, consequently reducing the surface energy of the asphalt. This further diminished the effective contact area between the asphalt and aggregates, forming microscopic voids and subsequently weakening the bonding strength at the asphalt-aggregate interface. Searching for new alternatives to commercialize pork from entire male pigs that could be affected by a boar taint sensory defect would be adequate. In this study, two different marinade mixtures (additives, salt, white wine plus different spices for mixture 1 and 2) were injected into pork loin pieces from castrated (C1 and C2) and entire male pigs (E1 and E2) with a high boar taint level (5.51 µg.g−1 AND and 0.73 µg.g−1 SKA) to evaluate their effect on the physicochemical and sensory quality of pork, and to assess their boar taint masking properties. To achieve this, physicochemical and sensory analyses with trained panellists were carried out. Marinated meat showed some differences in colour and a reduction in cooking losses. Mixture 2 achieved the best boar taint masking effect, due to spices content mainly nutmeg and ginger, and other ingredients such as white wine. Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is a recurrent immune‐mediated disorder causing hair loss without any scarring being present. It affects hairs on the head or other parts of the body and can occur at any age and in both genders. It seems that AA is associated with a higher rate of psychological disorders resulting from hair loss and the esthetic and social repercussions of it. Common treatments like corticosteroids do not work for every patient and recent treatment options focusing on the immunologic mechanisms like tofacitinib have shown some promising results. Methods: It's a retrospective study on patients with AA, AT, AU taking oral tofacitinib as a treatment for at least 6 months. Scalp hair loss was assessed before treatment and at each visit using the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score. Results: Of 97 cases, 69.1% demonstrated over 50% SALT score improvement, with 44.3% having 90% or more decrease in SALT score. Patients who suffered from patchy AA were more responsive compared to patients with AT and AU subtypes and had a greater percent change in SALT score. Tofacitinib was tolerated quite well and no significant adverse events were reported. The present work investigates the effect of microstructure, pH as well as the role of aggressive chloride ions on the corrosion behavior of American Petroleum Institute (API) X70 and X80 steel grades. The corrosion behavior was studied using single-run cyclic polarization in different solutions followed by microstructural analysis of the corroded samples to determine the mode and extent of corrosion damage. The solutions consist of a near-neutral aqueous sodium chloride solution, mildly alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate solution (pH-8.8), and highly alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate solution (pH-12) with and without the presence of chlorides. Ferrite phase in both the steel was found to dissolve preferentially in the different solutions leading to pitting as a result of microgalvanic coupling with the cementite and/or bainite phase. Interestingly, the corrosion resistance of the X70 grade was found to be greater than X80 at near-neutral as well as low alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate solutions, whereas the X80 performed better in higher pH solutions. Such contrasting corrosion behavior is attributed to the compactness, thickness, and electronic resistance of the passive oxide/hydroxide films formed during polarization in both the steel. The reduction of sodium chloride (NaCl) content, commonly known as salt, in processed meat products is one of the objectives of health organizations and government authorities to achieve healthier products. This reformulation of traditional meat products with protected designations poses more constraints, as they have a more consolidated quality image and less margin for change, since consumers appreciate the products for their unique sensory characteristics. The aim of this work is to present some of the strategies that have been explored to obtain meat products with low sodium content. Information related to the characteristics of traditional meat products with quality marks and geographical indications in different studies is discussed in opposition to the information recorded in their product specifications. It was found that the product specifications of meat products with Portuguese Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) show a wide variation in the NaCl content, much higher than the recommended values. Thus, one of the requirements to be implemented will be the parameterization of NaCl levels and their monitorization by control and certification organizations as a way to ensure product quality. It is also urgent to examine whether healthy innovation strategies may affect the quality of traditional PDO or PGI meat products and whether they can be included in the respective product specifications. Mg-2Zn-0.85Y (wt.%) alloys in different states were prepared by casting, hot rolling, solid solution, and solid solution + hot rolling. The results indicate that the semi-continuous network structure of I- and W-phases in the cast alloy can be broken into some small blocks after hot rolling and is mostly dissolved in the matrix after solid solution. The hot-rolled alloy exhibits superior comprehensive mechanical properties, particularly notable is its elongation, which reaches as high as 32%. Meanwhile, the hot-rolled alloy subjected to pre-solid solution has the highest YS and UTS of 200 MPa and 238 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, this alloy shows a minimal strength loss of 3.78% after immersion in 0.9% NaCl solution for 72 h. In addition, the relationships among microstructure, corrosion behavior and mechanical properties were also discussed. Plastic, which has become an indispensable part of our daily life due to its wide range of uses, is produced worldwide by millions of tons, and most of it accumulates in the ecosystem. Microplastics (MPs), which emerge as a result of their decomposition over time, are found almost everywhere we live. Some foods can also have high MP concentrations. Fish and shellfish living in the sea and oceans appear to be one of the most important ways of MPs uptake through the food chain. At the same time, table salt and drinking water pose a threat to food safety in terms of the presence of MPs. Unfortunately, increased exposure to MPs can also bring health problems. For example, respiratory diseases, reproductive problems, change of microbiota, neurotoxicity, and even cancer are just a few of them. Therefore, this danger should be recognized and necessary precautions should be taken. Even small steps are needed in this area. It is extremely important for people to increase their awareness of this issue and for countries to prevent this threat with various policies. The arch expansion damage of asphalt pavement is a typical disease in desert Gobi and saline-alkali areas, and the reasons for arch expansion are very complex. Exploring the impact of salt solution on the mechanical and drying shrinkage performances of cement-stabilized macadam helps to clarify the causes of the arch expansion damage. To this purpose, this paper designed a salt solution infiltration experiment, using salt solution infiltration to simulate the transmission and accumulation of salts in cement-stabilized macadam, and carried out the compressive and flexural tests of cement-stabilized mortar and cement-stabilized macadam, and measured the drying shrinkage performance of cement-stabilized mortar and macadam. The results show that the type of salt solution has a significant influence on the weight of the cement-stabilized mortar samples, sulfates will cause the samples to lose weight, while chlorides and mixed solutions cause the increase in weight. Chlorides and sulfates lead to the decrease in the strengths of cement-stabilized mortar and macadam. The salt crystallization will lead to the decline of the drying shrinkage strains of cement-stabilized mortar and macadam, which has a positive action for reducing the drying shrinkage deformation. However, under the combined action of chlorides and sulfates, cement-stabilized macadam expands with the moisture loss. Matricaria chamomilla (Asteraceae), commonly known as chamomile can tolerate freezing temperatures and grows in many soil types. This plant is found on all continents and has significant medicinal value. There are more than 120 chemicals detected in chamomile flowers, with the majority found in the essential oil. In this study, M. chamomilla was given the NaCl stress of 0 mM, 1 mM, 100 mM, and 150 mM concentrations This study was the first to assess the efficacy of German chamomile upon exposure to salt stress hence plant particles that had been dried and powdered were analyzed using, phytochemical tests, Fourier Transform Infrared and UV–Vis spectroscopy, thin layer chromatography, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching assay, antibacterial and antioxidant activity. The characterization and results of these activities show amazing results which enhance their antibacterial property with an increased zone of inhibition when the samples of salt stress of the above-given concentrations were compared to the control samples. More graph analysis indicates an effective impact of salt stress on the phytoconstituents of M. chamomilla. One of the key physicochemical parameters of polyelectrolyte microcapsules (PMCs) is their buffer capacity (BC). The BC of the microcapsules allows for an assessment of the change in protonation state across the entire polyelectrolyte system, which directly impacts the buffer barrier of PMCs, as well as the stability and physical properties of their shell. However, the buffer capacity of PMCs and their behavior under changes in ionic strength and temperature can differ depending on the type of core used to form the microcapsules. As part of this study, we revealed the buffer capacity (BC) of polyelectrolyte microcapsules formed on polystyrene cores (PMCPs) and studied the influence of ionic strength and environmental temperature on the BC of these capsules. We found that the buffer capacity of PMCPs differs from the BC of water at a pH above 8; the addition of sodium chloride leads to an increase in buffer capacity in alkaline conditions, and conversely, thermal treatment leads to its decrease at a pH of 9. The results obtained are different from the BC of polyelectrolyte microcapsules formed on CaCO3 cores, which suggests a difference in the physicochemical properties of these types of capsules. Cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading cause of death in Croatia, are linked to the high prevalence of hypertension. Both are associated with high salt intake, which was determined almost two decades ago when Croatian Action on Salt and Health (CRASH) was launched. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate salt, potassium, and iodine intake using a single 24 h urine sample in a random sample of the adult Croatian population and to analyse trends in salt consumption after the CRASH was intensively started. Methods: In this study, we analysed data on 1067 adult participants (mean age 57.12 (SD 13.9), men 35%). Results: Mean salt and potassium intakes were 8.6 g/day (IQR 6.2–11.2) and 2.8 g/day (IQR 2.1–3.5), respectively, with a sodium-to-potassium ratio of 2.6 (IQR 1.8–3.3). We detected a decrease of 17.6% (2 g/day less) in salt consumption compared with our previous salt-mapping study. However, only 13.7% and 8.9% met the WHO salt and potassium recommended targets of 5 g/day and 3.5 g/day, respectively. Salt intake was higher, and potassium ingestion was lower, in rural vs. urban regions and in continental vs. Mediterranean parts of Croatia. Moderate to severe iodine insufficiency was determined in only 3% of the adult participants. Conclusion: In the last fifteen years, salt consumption has been significantly reduced in the Croatian adult population because of the intensive and broad CRASH program. However, salt intake is still too high, and potassium ingestion is too low. Background: The global probiotics dietary supplements market size is continuously growing. To overcome probiotics' health concerns, metabiotics are recognized as a safer alternative. Aiming to deal with the escalating antimicrobial resistance, the current work demonstrates synergistic metabiotic-antibiotic combinations against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Methods: The probiotic properties of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from 3 commercial dietary supplements were characterized in vitro. The combinations of the cell-free supernatants (CFS) of selected probiotic strains and conventional antibiotics against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli clinical isolates were evaluated using the time-kill assay. To our knowledge, the current literature lacks sufficient time-kill assay studies revealing the kinetics of such metabiotic-antibiotic combinations against S. aureus and E. coli. Results: Four LAB strains isolated from dietary supplements as well as two reference strains were included in this study. The isolated LAB strains were identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry as follows: P2: Lactobacillus acidophilus, P3: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, P4: Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, and P5: Pediococcus acidilactici. The identification matched with that annotated by the manufacturers, except for P3. The tested strains could resist the acidic environment at pH 3. Excluding P2, the examined strains showed less than 1 log reduction in survivors upon the addition of reconstituted skimmed milk to pepsin at pH 2 and displayed an acceptable tolerance to 0.3% ox-bile. All the strains tolerated pancreatin. The hydrophobicity and autoaggregation capacities ranged between 7–92% and 36–66%, respectively. P2 was excluded owing to its inferior probiotic potential. Although the remaining strains showed excellent growth at 0.2% phenol, their growth was reduced at higher concentrations. L. plantarum and P. acidilactici strains possessed bile salt hydrolysis activity. The time-kill assay revealed promising synergistic activities of the combinations of CFS of L. rhamnosus P4 with either ceftazidime or gentamicin against E. coli and with only ceftazidime against S. aureus, as well as CFS of P. acidilactici P5 and ceftazidime against S. aureus. Conclusions: Strict identification and evaluation of the probiotic strains incorporated in dietary supplements is crucial to ensure their safety and efficacy. The CFS of probiotics could be utilized to formulate novel biotherapeutics targeting problematic pathogens. However, future in vivo studies are required to evaluate the appropriate treatment regimen. Regardless of the specific technology adopted, the use of desalination to produce fresh water from seawater results in a discharge of brine effluent containing a high concentration of salts and other desalination by-products that must be dealt with appropriately. Until now, this effluent has most commonly been discharged into the sea through a submarine outfall. Computational tools are used to simulate the behavior of these brine discharges to minimize their impact on the marine environment. Environmental assessments of desalination plants that are made using these tools can include consideration of the rates of effluent production and flow, diffuser configurations, marine conditions (e.g., currents, tides, salinity, temperature), and the proximity of plants to environmentally significant areas. Computational tools can also assist in the design of programs for monitoring the surroundings of brine disposal points. In this study, we developed a new tool for modeling brine discharges from submarine outfalls based on an adaptation of a near-field mathematical model coupled with a Lagrangian model. This new model was specifically designed for application to negatively buoyant effluent discharges. The near-field dilution results that were obtained for various current velocities and different diffuser vertical inclinations using this tool were compared with those obtained using a reference tool (Visual Plumes), considering four different desalination plants. Excellent correlation and a mean absolute percentage error lower than 10% were obtained between the two sets of results along with good reproducibility. Additionally, the existence of an integrated wave propagation model in the simulation software allowed the analysis of changes in the brine plume direction produced by waves formed far from the outfall area. Using the new model, it was possible to evaluate how the diffuser configuration affected the performance of the diffuser line, and the saline plume generated by the combined Lagrangian and near-field model realistically reproduced the behavior of a submarine brine outfall. This combined model is potentially applicable to a range of other situations, including studies that aim to minimize the environmental impact of desalination plants based on considerations of outfall locations and optimization of the diffuser configuration. Rechargeable sodium-chlorine (Na-Cl2) batteries show high theoretical specific energy density and excellent adaptability for extreme environmental applications. However, the reported cycle life is mostly less than 500 cycles, and the understanding of battery failure mechanisms is quite limited. In this work, we demonstrate that the substantially increased voltage polarization plays a critical role in the battery failure. Typically, the passivation on the porous cathode caused by the deposition of insulated sodium chloride (NaCl) is a crucial factor, significantly influencing the three-phase chlorine (NaCl/Na+, Cl-/Cl2) conversion kinetics. Here, a self-depassivation strategy enabled by iodine anion (I-)-tuned NaCl deposition was implemented to enhance the chlorine reversibility. The nucleation and growth of NaCl crystals are well balanced through strong coordination of the NaI deposition-dissolution process, achieving depassivation on the cathode and improving the reoxidation efficiency of solid NaCl. Consequently, the resultant Na-Cl2 battery delivers a super-long cycle life up to 2000 cycles. An iodine-induced self-depassivation strategy extends Na-Cl2 battery life to 2000 cycles by forming high-reactivity NaCl and lowering the chlorine conversion polarization, which successfully solves a key failure mechanism for superior reversibility. The present study aimed to explore whether high-salt diet (HSD) could cause cardiac damage independent of blood pressure, and whether nitric oxide (NO) could alleviate high-salt-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and autophagy in rats. The rats received 8% HSD in vivo. H9C2 cells or primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCM) were treated with sodium chloride (NaCl) in vitro. The levels of cleaved-caspase 3/caspase 3, cleaved-caspase 8/caspase 8, Bax/Bcl2, LC3 II/LC3 I, Beclin-1 and autophagy related 7 (ATG7) were increased in the heart of HSD rats with hypertension (HTN), and in hypertension-prone (HP) and hypertension-resistant (HR) rats. Middle and high doses (50 and 100 mM) of NaCl increased the level of cleaved-caspase 3/caspase 3, cleavedcaspase 8/caspase 8, Bax/Bcl2, LC3 II/LC3 I, Beclin-1, and ATG7 in H9C2 cells and NRCM. The endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) level was increased, but p-eNOS level was reduced in the heart of HSD rats and H9C2 cells treated with 100 mM NaCl. The level of NO was reduced in the serum and heart of HSD rats. NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) reversed the increases of cleaved-caspase 3/caspase 3, cleavedcaspase 8/caspase 8, Bax/Bcl2 induced by NaCl (100 mM) in H9C2 cells and NRCM. SNP treatment attenuated the increases of cleaved-caspase 3/caspase 3, Bax/Bcl2, LC3 II/LC3 I, Beclin-1, and ATG7 in the heart, but had no effect on the blood pressure of HSD rats with HR. These results demonstrated that HSD enhanced cardiac damage independently of blood pressure. Background: Misinformation about Hypertension is widely prevalent in our patient population and works against effective management of Hypertension and its complications Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted on patients reporting to Outpatient clinic in an Urban South Indian tertiary level hospital. In the pilot study, 100 Hypertensive patients were interviewed and the most common myths were tabulated. In phase II, 300 patients were interviewed and the prevalence of the myths studied. The results were then analyzed. Results: The study showed that a large number of myths were prevalent in the patient population. Most common myths were that Hypertension is not a serious disease and that non-consumption of table salt is enough treatment and that high BP always produces symptoms. The study found that myths are common in all sections of our society, even in graduates and post-graduates. The study also found myths decrease as the duration of Hypertension increases. Conclusions : This study concludes that a large number of myths about Hypertension are prevalent in the patient population in urban South India. Biodegradable plastics are urgently needed to replace petroleum-derived polymeric materials and prevent their accumulation in the environment. To this end, we isolated and characterized a halophilic and alkaliphilic bacterium from the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The isolate was identified as a Halomonas species and designated "CUBES01." Full-genome sequencing and genomic reconstruction revealed the unique genetic traits and metabolic capabilities of the strain, including the common polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biosynthesis pathway. Fluorescence staining identified intracellular polyester granules that accumulated predominantly during the strain's exponential growth, a feature rarely found among natural PHA producers. CUBES01 was found to metabolize a range of renewable carbon feedstocks, including glucosamine and acetyl-glucosamine, as well as sucrose, glucose, fructose, and further glycerol, propionate, and acetate. Depending on the substrate, the strain accumulated up to ~60% of its biomass (dry wt/wt) in poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), while reaching a doubling time of 1.7 h at 30°C and an optimum osmolarity of 1 M sodium chloride and a pH of 8.8. The physiological preferences of the strain may not only enable long-term aseptic cultivation but also facilitate the release of intracellular products through osmolysis. The development of a minimal medium also allowed the estimation of maximum polyhydroxybutyrate production rates, which were projected to exceed 5 g/h. Finally, also, the genetic tractability of the strain was assessed in conjugation experiments: two orthogonal plasmid vectors were stable in the heterologous host, thereby opening the possibility of genetic engineering through the introduction of foreign genes. This paper presents results of a research project completed to compare the ice-melting capabilities of environmentally friendly alternative deicers with average road salt. Tests were conducted in an environmental chamber where temperatures could be controlled to a certain degree to ensure that the test specimens were in the ideal condition for the most accurate results. There were 168 samples tested and their results were recorded and interpreted throughout this paper. The outcome of this research is based on the amount of brine solution produced during the melting tests, and the depth of ice penetrated for the penetration test. The data showed that all alternative deicers competed evenly or in some cases slightly outperformed rock salt. The results show that there is no clear preference that can be given to the materials; the preference could only be given based on factors not related to ice melting and penetration. Graphitic carbon plays a pivotal role in numerous technological applications, including energy storage, energy conversion, and different fields of material science. The transformation of amorphous carbon into graphitic carbon, a process known as graphitization, is important for optimizing the properties of carbon materials. In this study, we explore the catalytic graphitization of polyacrylonitrile (PANs) using various metal salts (LiNO3, Ca(NO3)2·4H2O, and Ni(NO3)2·6H2O). We prepared dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions of PAN with different salt concentrations of 5, 10, and 15 wt.%. The different prepared metal salt-mixed PAN/DMSO solutions were dried at 45 °C and this was followed by carbonization processes at 950 °C, with a heating rate of 1 °C min−1 for 1 h under an N2 atmosphere. The resulting graphitic carbon was characterized to determine the influence of salt type and concentration on the degree of graphitization. Our findings provide valuable insights into PAN-derived graphitic carbon's structural and compositional properties. This work underscores the influence of salt concentration in optimizing the graphitization process, offering a pathway to design facile and cost-effective graphitic carbon materials. The taxonomic composition of soil (Technosol and Retisol) bacterial communities near the salt dump of a potassium enterprise (Solikamsk, Perm krai) was analyzed by the method of high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Soil samples without plants and of the rhizosphere of plants of the species Calamagrostis epigeios (L.) Roth from plots located 1–1.5, 8, and 780 m and 11 km from the salt dump were studied. It was found that bacteria of the phyla Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota, Actinomycetota, Acidobacteriota, Verrucomicrobiota, and Gemmatimonadota predominated in all soil samples. The impact of halite waste on the taxonomic composition of bacterial communities in soils was the greatest on plots in the salinization zone in the immediate vicinity of the salt dump (1–1.5 m). In soil samples without plants taken in these areas, bacteria of the order "Candidatus Actinomarinales" predominated, the proportion of representatives of the phyla Acidobacteriota and Verrucomicrobiota, the class Actinobacteria, and the family Chitinophagaceae decreased, and the proportion of bacteria of the family Xanthomonadaceae in bacterial communities increased in comparison with nonsaline soils (at a distance of 8 and 780 m and 11 km from the salt dump). In the rhizosphere bacterial communities of plants, growing in the salinization zone, the proportion of representatives of the phylum Acidobacteriota and of the families Chitinophagaceae and Enterobacteriaceae decreased, while the proportion of the families Xanthomonadaceae and Flavobacteriaceae became greater. The influence of the salt dump on soil bacterial communities from plots located 8 m and 730 m from the salt dump was revealed: it was manifested in the presence of representatives of the order "Candidatus Actinomarinales" (1.4–1.6%), of the families Nitrosomonadaceae (3.0–6.1%) and Saprospiraceae (1.0–1.9%), of the genus Ilumatobacter (1.6–2.8%), and of nonculturable bacteria of the family Rhodanobacteraceae (1.3–1.5%). To evaluate the effect of NaCl content on microbiological, biochemical, physicochemical, and sensorial characteristics, Munster cheeses were prepared from pasteurized milk seeded with 3 yeasts (Kluyveromyces marxianus, Debaryomyces hansenii , and Geotrichum candidum) and 5 ripening bacteria (Arthrobacter arilaitensis, Brevibacterium aurantiacum, Corynebacterium casei, Hafnia alvei , and Staphylococcus equorum). Experiments were performed in triplicate under 1.0%, 1.7%, and 2.4% NaCl levels in cheese. Ripening (d 2–27) was carried out at 12°C and 96% relative humidity. These kinetics were both reproducible and repeatable at a 99% confidence level. For each microbial, biochemical, and physicochemical parameter, 2 kinetic descriptors (the maximal or minimal rate and its occurrence time) were defined. On d 2, the physicochemical variables (water activity, dry matter, and water content) were strongly dependent on the salting level. From d 2 to d 27, K. lactis was insensitive to salt, whereas D. hansenii was stimulated. Geotrichum candidum growth appeared very sensitive to salt in cheese: at 1.0% NaCl, G. candidum exhibited overgrowth, negatively affecting rind appearance, underrind consistency and thickness, and off-flavor flaws. A salt concentration of 2.4% induced death of G. candidum. A total of 4 bacteria (A. arilaitensis, B. aurantiacum, C. casei , and H. alvei) were moderately sensitive to salt, but S. equorum was insensitive to it. Salt level in cheese had a significant effect on carbon substrate consumption rates. The lactate consumption rate in 1.0% salted cheeses was approximately twice higher than under 2.4% NaCl. Data analysis of microorganism, biochemical, and physicochemical kinetics, as well as sensory analysis, showed that 1.7% NaCl was the best salt level in Munster-type cheeses to achieve an optimum balance between cheese characteristics, sensory qualities, and marketability. Membrane distillation is a novel membrane-based separation technology with the potential to produce pure water from high-salinity brine. It couples transport behaviors along the membrane and across the membrane. The brine in the feed is gradually concentrated due to the permeate flux across the membrane, which is a significant factor in initiating the scaling behavior on the membrane surface along the feed flow direction. It is of great interest to investigate and estimate the development of scaling on the membrane surface. This work specifically focuses on a long-distance membrane distillation process with a sodium chloride solution as the feed. A modeling approach has been developed to estimate the sodium chloride scaling development on the membrane surface along the flow direction. A set of experiments was conducted to validate the results. Based on mathematical simplification and analytical fitting, a simplified model was summarized to predict the initiating position of sodium chloride scaling on the membrane, which is meaningful for scaling control in industrial-scale applications of membrane distillation. Summary: Salinity, as one of the most challenging environmental factors restraining crop growth and yield, poses a severe threat to global food security. To address the rising food demand, it is urgent to develop crop varieties with enhanced yield and greater salt tolerance by delving into genes associated with salt tolerance and high‐yield traits. MiR396b/GRF6 module has previously been demonstrated to increase rice yield by shaping the inflorescence architecture. In this study, we revealed that miR396b/GRF6 module can significantly improve salt tolerance of rice. In comparison with the wild type, the survival rate of MIM396 and OE‐GRF6 transgenic lines increased by 48.0% and 74.4%, respectively. Concurrent with the increased salt tolerance, the transgenic plants exhibited reduced H2O2 accumulation and elevated activities of ROS‐scavenging enzymes (CAT, SOD and POD). Furthermore, we identified ZNF9, a negative regulator of rice salt tolerance, as directly binding to the promoter of miR396b to modulate the expression of miR396b/GRF6. Combined transcriptome and ChIP‐seq analysis showed that MYB3R serves as the downstream target of miR396b/GRF6 in response to salt tolerance, and overexpression of MYB3R significantly enhanced salt tolerance. In conclusion, this study elucidated the potential mechanism underlying the response of the miR396b/GRF6 network to salt stress in rice. Albendazole (ABZ) is a highly effective yet poorly water-soluble antiparasitic drug known to form salts (ABZ-FMA, ABZ-DTA, and ABZ-HCl) with fumaric acid (FMA), D-tartaric acid (DTA), and hydrochloric acid (HCl). This research utilized a range of analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy (1H NMR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), dynamic vapor sorption (DVS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to validate and characterize the solid-state properties of these drug salts. This study also assessed the solubility and intrinsic dissolution rate (IDR) of these salts under different pH conditions compared to the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and conducted stability studies. Moreover, the in vivo pharmacokinetic performance of ABZ salt was evaluated. The results of this study reveal that the new solid form of ABZ is primarily associated with amino acid esters and benzimidazole groups, forming intermolecular interactions. All three ABZ salts significantly improved the solubility and dissolution rate of ABZ, with ABZ-HCl demonstrating the optimal performance. Importantly, the drug salt exhibited robust physical stability when exposed to adverse conditions, including strong light irradiation (4500 ± 500 lux), high humidity (92.5 ± 5% relative humidity), elevated temperatures (50 ± 2 °C), and accelerated test conditions (40 °C/75 ± 5% relative humidity). Lastly, the in vivo pharmacokinetic analysis demonstrated that ABZ salt led to a substantial increase in AUC(0–24) and Cmax compared to ABZ. This elevation in solubility in aqueous solvents signifies that ABZ salt exhibits characteristics that can enhance oral bioavailability and pharmacokinetics. There are health concerns with regard to the consumption of sodium. Excessive consumption of sodium is suspected to cause high blood pressure, among other things. Therefore, sodium should be reduced or replaced during the production of food. In the present study, in the first part, raw fermented sausages from pork and turkey meat, produced with reduced NaCl concentrations, were investigated. In a second part, the salts, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride were added to the sausages, replacing 50% of NaCl. To elucidate, if the reduction or replacement influences the quality of the sausages, physicochemical and microbiological parameters of the products were analyzed. The data show that a reduction of sodium chloride partly influences the hardness and water activity results of raw fermented sausages, made from pork and turkey meat, the redness and nitrite content of the pork sausages, and the ripening losses and total viable counts of the turkey products. Raw fermented sausages with potassium, magnesium, and calcium as partial substitutes for sodium had differing water activity, pH, hardness, and microbiological results using pork and differing pH, hardness, and microbiological results using turkey meat. A bactericidal effect was observed in raw fermented sausages with calcium chloride in inoculation tests with Listeria monocytogenes due to the pH reduction due to calcium. The results indicate that reduction and replacement of NaCl can influence the final products. The E‐proteinoid 3 receptor (PTGER3), a member of the prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) subtype receptor, belongs to the G‐protein‐coupled superfamily of receptors. Animal studies have demonstrated its involvement in salt sensitivity by regulating sodium reabsorption. This study aimed to investigate the association between genetic variants of PTGER3 and salt sensitivity, longitudinal blood pressure (BP) changes, and the incidence of hypertension in Chinese adults. A chronic salt intake intervention was conducted involving 514 adults from 124 families in the 2004 Baoji Salt‐Sensitivity Study Cohort in northern China. These participants followed a 3‐day regular baseline diet, followed by a 7‐day low‐salt diet (3.0 g/d) and a 7‐day high‐salt diet (18 g/d), and were subsequently followed for 14 years. The findings revealed a significant relationship between the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs17482751 of PTGER3 and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) response to high salt intervention. Additionally, SNPs rs11209733, rs3765894, and rs2268062 were significantly associated with longitudinal changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP), DBP, and mean arterial pressure (MAP) during the 14‐year follow‐up period. SNP rs6424414 was significantly associated with longitudinal changes in DBP over 14 years. Finally, SNP rs17482751 showed a significant correlation with the incidence of hypertension over 14 years. These results emphasize the significant role of PTGER3 gene polymorphism in salt sensitivity, longitudinal BP changes, and the development of hypertension in the Chinese population. Few studies have investigated the hemodynamic mechanism whereby primary hyperaldosteronism causes hypertension. The traditional view holds that hyperaldosteronism initiates hypertension by amplifying salt-dependent increases in cardiac output (CO) by promoting increases in sodium retention and blood volume. Systemic vascular resistance (SVR) is said to increase only as a secondary consequence of the increased CO and blood pressure. Recently, we investigated the primary hemodynamic mechanism whereby hyperaldosteronism promotes salt sensitivity and initiation of salt-dependent hypertension. In unilaterally nephrectomized male Sprague-Dawley rats given infusions of aldosterone or vehicle, we found that aldosterone promoted salt sensitivity and initiation of salt-dependent hypertension by amplifying salt-induced increases in SVR while decreasing CO. In addition, we validated mathematical models of human integrative physiology, derived from Guyton’s classic 1972 model - Quantitative Cardiovascular Physiology-2005 and HumMod-3.0.4. Neither model accurately predicted the usual changes in sodium balance, CO, and SVR that normally occur in response to clinically realistic increases in salt intake. These results demonstrate significant limitations with the hypotheses inherent in the Guyton models. An intriguing area in the IP (image processing) is the recovery of noisy photographs from the noise caused by the salt and pepper. As the mistake rate rises and the image format varies, the issue with the current task does not go away. In this study, Salt and Pepper Denoising, Hybrid Balancing Composite motion Optimization with Adaptive Switching Modified Decision based Unsymmetric Trimmed Median Filter and Forensics-Based Investigation Algorithm is proposed (R-SPN-ASMD-UTMF-Hyb-BCO-FBIA). Initially, the input images are obtained from boat-typesrecognition dataset, cat-breeds-dataset, cars-image-dataset, butterfly-images 40-species dataset and birds-200 dataset. The images are pre-processed through an ASMD-UTMF filter. ASMD-UTMF does not expose any adoption of optimization systems to calculate the optimal parameters. Therefore, the proposed Hyb-BCO-FBIA is employed for optimizing the ASMD-UTMF weight parameters. The suggested system is implemented on MATLAB and the assessment metrics as Mean Square Error (MSE), Structural similarity index measurement (SSIM), Peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), Normalized cross-correlation (NC), Image Enhancement Factor (IEF), Mean Square Error (MSE) are analysed. Hot corrosion of Ni-based superalloys has been extensively studied due to its negative impact on aero-turbine engines. However, the complexity of hot corrosion makes it difficult to discern the degradation pathways of field-exposed parts. To that end, it is technically important to conduct more complex laboratory-scale testing to develop a better understanding of the degradation pathways that may affect a field-exposed part. Na2SO4 has been the principal deposit considered in past studies, but with little consideration given to another common environmental species, NaCl. This study aimed to better understand the role of NaCl in Na2SO4 deposits at 900°C on a 2nd-generation, Ni-based superalloy, PWA 1429. A NaCl-only deposit was also studied to isolate NaCl's role in affecting degradation. It was found that additions of NaCl induced greater degradation when compared to a Na2SO4-only deposit. Short-term exposures were able to determine that NaCl forms volatile chlorides with nickel that subsequently oxidize to form a porous, non-protective product. In tandem, oxygen ingress causes subsurface aluminum oxidation, which inhibits the formation of a protective oxide on the alloy. The results indicate that NaCl plays a major role early in the degradation process which may be missed during post-analyses after long-term exposures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salinity is a major constraint limiting the yield of tomatoes. However, grafting strategies may help to overcome the salt toxicity of this important horticultural species if appropriate rootstocks are identified. The present study aimed to test a new rootstock, JUPAFORT1, obtained by crossing the glycophyte Solanum lycopersicum (cv. Poncho Negro) with the halophyte wild-related species Solanum chilense to improve the salinity tolerance of the Chilean tomato landrace Old Limachino Tomato (OLT). Intact OLT plants were exposed to 0, 80, or 160 mM of NaCl for 21 days at the vegetative stage and compared with self-grafted (L/L) and Limachino plants grafted on JUPAFORT1 rootstock (L/R) under a completely randomized design. JUPAFORT1 increased OLT scion vigor in the absence of salt but did not significantly increase fresh weight under stress conditions. However, JUPAFORT1 confers to the scion an anisohydric behavior contrasting with the isohydric behavior of L and L/L plants as indicated by measurements of stomatal conductance; L/R plants were able to maintain their metabolic status despite a slight decrease in the leaf's relative water content. JUPAFORT1 rootstock also enabled the maintenance of photosynthetic pigment concentrations in the scion in contrast to L and L/L plants, which exhibited a decrease in photosynthetic pigments under stress conditions. L/R plants encountered oxidative stress at the highest stress intensity (160 mM of NaCl) only, while L and L/L plants suffered from oxidative damage at a lower dose (80 mM of NaCl). L/R plants behaved as includer plants and did not sequester Na+ in the root system, in contrast to L and L/L, which behaved as excluder plants retaining Na+ in the root system to avoid its translocation to the shoots. The expression of genes coding for ion transporters (HKT1.1, HKT1.2, LKT1, SKOR, SOS2, and SOS3) in the root system was not modified by salinity in L/R. In contrast, their expression varied in response to salinity in L and L/L. Overall, L/R plants exhibited higher physiological stability than L/L or L plants in response to an increasing NaCl dose and did not require additional energy investment to trigger an adaptative response to salinity. This suggests that the constitutive salinity tolerance of the halophyte S. chilense was maintained in the interspecific rootstock. JUPAFORT1 issued from S. lycopersicum x S. chilense may thus improve salt-stress resilience in OLT tomatoes. Cardiovascular diseases account for almost 18 million deaths annually, the most of all non-communicable diseases. The reduction of dietary salt consumption is a modifiable risk factor. The WHO recommends a daily sodium intake of <2000 mg but average consumption exceeds this in many countries globally. Strategies proposed to aid effective salt reduction policy include product reformulation, front of pack labelling, behavioural change campaigns and establishing a low-sodium-supportive environment. Yet, salt for household and processed food use is, in countries wholly or partially adopting a universal salt iodisation policy, the principal vehicle for population-wide iodine fortification. With salt reduction policies in place, there is concern that iodine deficiency disorders may re-emerge. Recognising the urgency to tackle the rising prevalence of NCDs yet not risk the re-emergence and detrimental effect of inadequate iodine intakes, this review lays out the feasibility of integrating both salt reduction and salt iodine fortification strategies. Reducing the burden of health risks associated with an excessive sodium intake or inadequate iodine through population-tailored, cost-effective strategies involving salt is both feasible and achievable, and represents an opportunity to improve outcomes in public health. Straw fibers are renowned for their cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and durability. They represent a promising natural reinforcement option for reactive powder concrete (RPC). This paper investigated the impact of straw fibers on RPC's workability, mechanical performance (mechanical strength and flexural toughness), and electrical properties (electrical resistance and AC impedance spectroscopy curves). The straw fiber volumes ranged from 1% to 4.0% of the total RPC volume. Specimens were cured under standard curing conditions for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. Mechanical and electrical properties of the specimens were tested before chloride salt erosion. The mass loss and ultrasonic velocity loss of the samples were measured under NaCl freeze–thaw cycles (F-Cs). The mass loss, ultrasonic velocity loss, and mechanical strengths loss of the samples were measured under NaCl dry–wet alternations (D-As). The findings indicated that incorporating straw fibers enhanced RPC's flexural strength, compressive strength, and flexural toughness by 21.3% to 45.76%, −7.16% to 11.62%, and 2.4% to 32.7%, respectively, following a 28-day curing period. The addition of straw fibers could augment the AC electrical resistance of the RPC by 10.17% to 58.1%. The electrical characteristics of the RPC adhered to series conduction models. A power function relationship existed between the electrical resistance and mechanical strengths of the RPC. After 10 NaCl D-As, the mass loss rate, ultrasonic velocity loss rate, flexural strength, and compressive strength loss rates of the RPC decreased by 0.42% to 1.68%, 2.69% to 6.73%, 9.6% to 35.65%, and 5.41% to 34.88%, respectively, compared to blank samples. After undergoing 200 NaCl F-Cs, the rates of mass loss and ultrasonic velocity loss of the RPC decreased by 0.89% to 1.01% and 6.68% to 8.9%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phosphorus, P, is a vital element of paramount importance for both humans and for the Environment. Wastewater contains often relatively high concentrations of P which can be recovered as crystalline struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O, MAP). This option is quite attractive in assisting sustainable development because struvite can be used as a slow-release fertilizer. Domestic wastewater is usually high in P and nitrogen, N, but relatively poor in magnesium, Mg. It is necessary to develop low-cost solutions for the enrichment of wastewater with Mg. In the present work, sacrificial magnesium anodes were used, which dissolve upon anodic polarization, releasing sufficient magnesium for the selective precipitation of MAP. The application of constant current between two electrodes of which the anode is a low-cost magnesium cylindrical rod (4 cm2 exposed surface area) and the other a platinum cathode electrode, both immersed in ammonium phosphate solutions, without adjustment of the solution pH, was investigated. Constant current density over the range 10–100 A·m−2, between the Mg- Pt electrodes immersed in solutions of ammonium hydrogen phosphate of exactly known initial concentration, was applied using a potentiostat. In the presence of sodium chloride solutions, on the magnesium anode and in the bulk solution, Mg(OH)2 (brucite) formed because of the passivation of the Mg electrode. In dilute ammonium hydrogen phosphate solutions, the magnesium anode dissolution resulted in struvite precipitation, even at a low applied current (10 mA). Struvite crystals with an average size of 20 μm were precipitated. The behavior of the cell for the electrolyte solutions used was Faradaic as long as the surface coverage of the anode was relatively low. Background and objectives: The main problem of vascular preservation is the maintenance of vessel graft quality and function following extended storage. Conventional preservation solutions such as histidine–tryptophan–ketoglutarate (HTK) solution, Phosphate-Buffer Solution (PBS), or sodium chloride 0.9% has been shown to be inadequate in preserving vascular physiological function after 3 days of cold storage. This study aimed to evaluate whether adenosine and lidocaine (AL) in a modified Krebs–Henseleit (KH) solution can preserve the function and histological structure of rat aortic rings after 6 days. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five aortic rings from male Wistar rats (200–300 g) were harvested and immediately immersed in one of the assigned cold preservation solutions: standard KH, modified KH (mod KH) with lower calcium (Ca2+) and higher magnesium content (Mg2+) with or without adenosine and lidocaine (mod KH-AL), and modified KH with AL, insulin, and melatonin (Mod KH-ALMI). The contraction and relaxation function of the aortic rings were examined using an isometric force transducer after 6 days of cold preservation. Hematoxylin and eosin staining were used to analyze the rings' histological structure. Results: Vascular contraction and relaxation functions were severely affected after a 6-day cold storage period in standard KH. Modifying the KH solution by reducing the Ca2+ and increasing the Mg2+ levels greatly recovered the vessel functions. The addition of AL or ALMI to the modified KH did not further recover vascular contractility. However, only the addition of AL to the modified KH increased the ACh-induced relaxation at 6 days when compared to the conventional KH, suggesting that endothelium preservation is improved. From histological analysis, it was found that the addition of AL but not ALMI further improved the endothelial lining and the structure of the elastic membrane layers of the preserved vessels after 6 days of cold preservation. Conclusions: The addition of AL to low calcium-high magnesium KH solution significantly enhanced endothelial preservation and improved endothelial-induced relaxation of preserved vessels after 6 days of cold storage.
