Drought is a major abiotic stress limiting agricultural productivity. Previous field-level experiments have demonstrated that drought decreases microbiome diversity in the root and rhizosphere. How these changes ultimately affect plant health remains elusive. Toward this end, we combined reductionist, transitional and ecological approaches, applied to the staple cereal crop sorghum to identify key root-associated microbes that robustly affect drought-stressed plant phenotypes. Fifty-three Arabidopsis-associated bacteria were applied to sorghum seeds and their effect on root growth was monitored. Two Arthrobacter strains caused root growth inhibition (RGI) in Arabidopsis and sorghum. In the context of synthetic communities, Variovorax strains were able to protect plants from Arthrobacter-caused RGI. As a transitional system, high-throughput phenotyping was used to test the synthetic communities. During drought stress, plants colonized by Arthrobacter had reduced growth and leaf water content. Plants colonized by both Arthrobacter and Variovorax performed as well or better than control plants. In parallel, we performed a field trial wherein sorghum was evaluated across drought conditions. By incorporating data on soil properties into the microbiome analysis, we accounted for experimental noise with a novel method and were able to observe the negative correlation between the abundance of Arthrobacter and plant growth. Having validated this approach, we cross-referenced datasets from the high-throughput phenotyping and field experiments and report a list of bacteria with high confidence that positively associated with plant growth under drought stress. In conclusion, a three-tiered experimental system successfully spanned the lab-to-field gap and identified beneficial and deleterious bacterial strains for sorghum under drought.

How these changes ultimately affect plant health is not well understood. In parallel, model systems have been used to tease apart the specific interactions between plants and single, or small groups of microbes. However, translating this work into crop species and achieving increased crop yields within noisy field settings remains a challenge. Thus, the next scientific leap forward in microbiome research must cross the great lab-to-field divide. Toward this end, we combined reductionist, transitional and ecological approaches, applied to the staple cereal crop sorghum to identify key beneficial and detrimental, root associated microbes that robustly affect drought stressed plant phenotypes.ResultsFifty-three bacterial strains, originally characterized for association with Arabidopsis, were applied to sorghum seeds and their effect on root growth was monitored for seven days. Two Arthrobacter strains, members of the Actinobacteria phylum, caused root growth inhibition (RGI) in Arabidopsis and sorghum. In the context of synthetic communities, strains of Variovorax were able to protect both Arabidopsis and sorghum from the RGI caused by Arthrobacter. As a transitional system, we tested the synthetic communities through a 24-day high-throughput sorghum phenotyping assay and found that during drought stress, plants colonized by Arthrobacter were significantly smaller and had reduced leaf water content as compared to control plants. However, plants colonized by both Arthrobacter and Variovorax performed as well or better than control plants. In parallel, we performed a field trial wherein sorghum was evaluated across well-watered and drought conditions. Drought responsive microbes were identified, including an enrichment in Actinobacteria, consistent with previous findings. By incorporating data on soil properties into the microbiome analysis, we accounted for experimental noise with a newly developed method and were then able to observe that the abundance of Arthrobacter strains negatively correlated with plant growth. Having validated this approach, we cross-referenced datasets from the high-throughput phenotyping and field experiments and report a list of high confidence bacterial taxa that positively associated with plant growth under drought stress.ConclusionsA three-tiered experimental system connected reductionist and ecological approaches and identified beneficial and deleterious bacterial strains for sorghum under drought stress.

Summary Cassava brown streak disease (CBSD) is a major constraint on cassava yields in East and Central Africa and threatens production in West Africa. CBSD is caused by two species of positive‐sense RNA viruses belonging to the family Potyviridae, genus Ipomovirus: Cassava brown streak virus (CBSV) and Ugandan cassava brown streak virus (UCBSV). Diseases caused by the family Potyviridae require the interaction of viral genome‐linked protein (VPg) and host eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) isoforms. Cassava encodes five eIF4E proteins: eIF4E, eIF(iso)4E‐1, eIF(iso)4E‐2, novel cap‐binding protein‐1 (nCBP‐1), and nCBP‐2. Protein–protein interaction experiments consistently found that VPg proteins associate with cassava nCBPs. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated genome editing was employed to generate ncbp‐1, ncbp‐2, and ncbp‐1/ncbp‐2 mutants in cassava cultivar 60444. Challenge with CBSV showed that ncbp‐1/ncbp‐2 mutants displayed delayed and attenuated CBSD aerial symptoms, as well as reduced severity and incidence of storage root necrosis. Suppressed disease symptoms were correlated with reduced virus titre in storage roots relative to wild‐type controls. Our results demonstrate the ability to modify multiple genes simultaneously in cassava to achieve tolerance to CBSD. Future studies will investigate the contribution of remaining eIF4E isoforms on CBSD and translate this knowledge into an optimized strategy for protecting cassava from disease.

Because variation in warning signals slows down the predator education process, aposematic theory predicts that animal warning signals should be monomorphic. Yet, warning color polytypisms are not uncommon in aposematic species. In cases where warning signal variants are separated geographically, adaptation to local predators could explain this variation. However, this cannot explain the persistence of sympatric polymorphisms in aposematic taxa. The strawberry poison frog (Oophaga pumilio) exhibits both allopatric and sympatric warning color variation in and around the Bocas del Toro archipelago of Panama. One explanation that has been proposed for the rapid diversification of O. pumilio coloration in this archipelago is low predation; if island populations have few predators, stabilizing selection would be relaxed opening the door for diversification via selection or genetic drift. Using a combination of mark-recapture and clay model studies, we tested for differences in survival and predation among sympatric red and yellow color morphs of O. pumilio from Bastimentos Island. We found no evidence for differential survival or predation in this population, despite the fact that one morph (red) is more common and widely distributed than the other (yellow). Even in an area of the island where the yellow morph is not found, predator attack rates were similar among morphs. Visual modeling suggests that yellow and red morphs are distinguishable and conspicuous against a variety of backgrounds and by viewers with different visual systems. Our results suggest that general avoidance by predators of red and yellow, both of which are typical warning colors used throughout the animal kingdom, may be contributing to the apparent stability of this polymorphism.

In this contribution, a review of the beam instrumentation status in the LHC 2016 Run is presented. The treated devices are the beam loss monitors based on diamond detectors, the beam position monitors, the wire-scanners, the beam gas vertex detector and the synchrotron radiation monitors. The new features implemented and the issues encountered during 2016's operation will be highlighted for each instrument. Additionally, the interventions and improvements planned for the coming winter shutdown will be discussed.

The affinity of In(III) for N-donor ligands was investigated by differential pulse voltammetry, DFT calculations, and crystallography. The structure of [In(tpen)(CH3COO)](ClO4)2 ・ 0.5H2O (1) is reported (tpen = N,N,N´ ,N´-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine): Monoclinic, P21/n, a = 8.687(4), b = 7.767(8), c = 20.432(10) Å , β = 93.372(8)°, Z = 4, R = 0.0518. The In(III) center is 7-coordinate, with six In-N bonds to the tpen ligand in the range 2.306 - 2.410 Å, and a unidentate acetate group with In-O = 2.247 Å. The formation constants of In3+ in 0.1 M NaNO3+ at 25 °C are (M = In(III), L = ligand, H = proton): L = triethylenetetramine, logβ (MLH2) = 25.3±}0.3, logK1 = 14.43±}0.09, and logβ (ML(OH)2) = 27.7±}0.1; tetraethylenepentamine, logβ (MLH) = 20.8±}0.2, and ML (logβ (ML) = 20.1±}0.3); diglycolic acid, (logβ (MLH) = 8.06±}0.06), logK1 = 6.02±} 0.06, logβ2 = 9.40±}0.08; tpen, logK1 = 17.71±}0.07; N,N´-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine, logK1 = 14.69±}0.05; 1,10-phenanthroline, logK1 = 6.81±}0.07, logK2 = 6.44±}0.07, logK3 = 6.20±}0.08. Correlations are shown between the determined formation constants for the polyamines and logK1(NH3) values for a wide variety of metal ions. For M(II) ions, the log K1(NH3) values are experimental data, but for M(III) ions the data are predicted by an empirical dual-basicity equation, including logK1(NH3) = 4.0 for In(III). DFT calculations are used to obtain ΔE for the reaction [M(H2O)6]n+ + NH3 ⇆[M(H2O)5NH3]n+ + H2O for M(II) through M(IV) ions in water, represented as a structureless medium with the dielectric constant of water. Correlations are found that support the predicted value of logK1(NH3) for In(III) of 4.0. The nature of the intercepts on such correlations are discussed.

Within the group of botanical products there is a large range of variation with regard to their properties. Some products are identical to foods while others come close to or are medicines. Botanical products are regulated differently within the different member states of the European Union (EU) and globally. They are regulated either as food or as medicinal products, and in the latter case often with simplified registration procedures. These differences are caused by differences in traditional use, in cultural and historical background, in scientific substantiation and in enforcement of current legislation. One may expect that in the future differences will remain, unless EU legislation is enacted with sufficient room for different approaches. The strengths and weaknesses of the different regulatory procedures have been reviewed and evaluated as well as the current methods for quality, efficacy and safety evaluation. Criteria to categorize botanical products have been defined, such that botanical products can be regulated under the current food and medicinal regulations. Furthermore, a decision tree has been developed as a tool to distinguish herbal medicinal products from botanical health products and vice versa, and to provide a stepwise framework for the assessment of safety and efficacy.

Wheat bran (WB) from Triticum aestivum has many beneficial effects on human health. To the best of our knowledge, very little has been published about its ability to prevent pathogenic bacterial adhesion in the intestine. Here, a WB extract was fractionated using different strategies, and the obtained fractions were tested in different in vitro methodologies to evaluate their interference in the attachment of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88 to intestinal porcine epithelial cells (IPEC-J2) with the aim of identifying the putative anti-adhesive molecules. It was found that a proteinaceous compound in the >300-kDa fraction mediates the recognition of ETEC K88 to IPEC-J2. Further fractionation of the >300-kDa sample by size-exclusion chromatography showed several proteins below 90 kDa, suggesting that the target protein belongs to a high-molecular-weight (MW) multi-component protein complex. The identification of some relevant excised bands was performed by mass spectrometry (MS) and mostly revealed the presence of various protease inhibitors (PIs) of low MW: Serpin-Z2B, Class II chitinase, endogenous alpha-amylase/subtilisin inhibitor and alpha-amylase/trypsin inhibitor CM3. Furthermore, an incubation of the WB extract with ETEC K88 allowed for the identification of a 7S storage protein globulin of wheat, Globulin 3 of 66 kDa, which may be one of the most firmly attached WB proteins to ETEC K88 cells. Further studies should be performed to gain an understanding of the molecular recognition of the blocking process that takes place. All gathered information can eventually pave the way for the development of novel anti-adhesion therapeutic agents to prevent bacterial pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND Thickness is known to be an important survival prognosticator for cutaneous melanoma, but controversy exists as to whether Clark level of invasion retains prognostic significance once thickness has been accounted for. A recent proposal to eliminate Clark level from the staging system for melanoma of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) prompted the authors to investigate whether level adds useful prognostic information to Breslow thickness. They used the data base of the New York University Melanoma Cooperative Group (NYU-MCG) Registry. METHODS The analysis was based on 919 patients with AJCC Stage I or II melanomas diagnosed between 1972 and 1982 and followed for an average of 10.9 years. Melanoma thicknesses were divided into 4 categories (≤0.75, 0.76–1.50, 1.51–4.00, and >4.00 mm). Patients were cross-classified according to tumor thickness and Clark level (II–V). For each combination of thickness and level, the Kaplan–Meier survival curve and 10-year survival proportion were computed, using death from melanoma as the outcome. The impact of Clark level on survival was evaluated for each of the thickness categories. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the simultaneous effect of thickness and level on survival while controlling for other important prognostic factors, i.e., age, tumor location, and presence or absence of ulceration. RESULTS Level of invasion was a significant predictor of death from melanoma in each of the four thickness categories. Likewise, in the Cox analyses, level was a significant prognostic variable, even after thickness was included in the model and regardless of whether thickness was treated as a categoric or a continuous variable. CONCLUSIONS These results confirm that both tumor thickness and level of invasion are important independent prognostic factors in AJCC Stage I and II melanomas. BACKGROUND Recently, the Pigmented Lesion Group at the University of Pennsylvania described a 4-variable model for predicting 10-year survival for patients with primary cutaneous melanoma. The variables are tumor thickness, anatomic site of the lesion, age, and gender. The objective of the current study was to test the validity of this model, employing the large data base of the New York University Melanoma Cooperative Group. METHODS The predicted probabilities of 10-year survival for 780 patients with primary cutaneous melanoma were determined by multivariate logistic regression, using the 4 variables. RESULTS The overall 10-year survival rate of the current study group was 78.4%. Of the four variables, tumor thickness, anatomic site of the lesion, and age were found to be independent predictors of survival. Although survival was better for women, gender was not a statistically significant factor in predicting 10-year survival when entered into the multivariate logistic regression model. In the current study, the probability of 10-year survival of patients with melanomas < 0.76 mm ranged from 93-99%, depending on the age and primary site. Age and site had more impact on the prognosis of intermediate and thick melanomas than on thin melanomas. Thus, for melanomas 0.76-1.69 mm, 1.70-3.60 mm, and thicker than 3.60 mm, the probabilities of survival ranged from 70-94%, 39-82%, and 23-68%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The wider ranges in survival rates for thicker melanomas, depending on the other variables, emphasize the importance of including variables in addition to tumor thickness in a prognostic model. Using a large data base from a medical center, the current study supports the prognostic multivariate model of the Pigmented Lesions Group of the University of Pennsylvania; however, the authors of the current study did not find gender to be statistically significant in this multivariate model. Elastic differential cross sections for K + mesons scattered from nat C and 6 Li targets have been measured at an incident momentum of 715 MeV/c and at angles of 7° to 42° in the laboratory frame. The experimental cross sections agree, within errors, with two different parameter-free impulse approximation calculations. To reduce the effects of the systematic errors, the ratio of the experimental cross sections for nat C to 6 Li is compared to the theoretical values, and these ratios do not agree with theory. This discrepancy suggests either a density-dependent alteration of K + -nucleon amplitudes or a failure of the optical potential calculations to describe these nuclides adequately.

Background: The incidence of malignant melanoma (MM) has rapidly increased during the past five decades. Relatively little information is available on whether the role of the dermatologist has increased concomitantly in the surgical management of this cancer. Objective: Our purpose was to learn how members of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) treat patients with lesions highly suspected as being MM and how the management of these patients may have changed over the past decade. This, the first of a two-part series, concerns biopsies. Methods: The data for the study were collected by means of a questionnaire that was sent to all members of the AAD practicing in the United State ( N = 7412). Results: A total of 2991 valid questionnaires were returned, a response rate of 40%. The majority of respondents (89% in 1982; 90% in 1992) stated that they performed the biopsies of pigmented lesions suspected of being MMs. Excisional biopsy was the preferred technique (58% in 1982; 68% in 1992). The type of biopsy and who performed the initial biopsy of a suspected MM were associated with the following factors: (1) the number of years in practice, (2) the type of practice, and (3) whether the dermatologist subsequently performed the definitive surgery for the MM. Regional variations in biopsy practices were also noted. Conclusion: Most AAD dermatologists who responded to the questionnaire perform the biopsies of lesions highly suspected of being MM. During the last decade an increasing proportion of dermatologists are performing excisional biopsies rather than other types of biopsies for such lesions.

UnlabelledWe have analyzed pharmacokinetic data for glycerol phenylbutyrate (also GT4P or HPN-100) and sodium phenylbutyrate with respect to possible dosing biomarkers in patients with urea cycle disorders (UCD).Study designThese analyses are based on over 3000 urine and plasma data points from 54 adult and 11 pediatric UCD patients (ages 6-17) who participated in three clinical studies comparing ammonia control and pharmacokinetics during steady state treatment with glycerol phenylbutyrate or sodium phenylbutyrate. All patients received phenylbutyric acid equivalent doses of glycerol phenylbutyrate or sodium phenylbutyrate in a cross over fashion and underwent 24-hour blood samples and urine sampling for phenylbutyric acid, phenylacetic acid and phenylacetylglutamine.ResultsPatients received phenylbutyric acid equivalent doses of glycerol phenylbutyrate ranging from 1.5 to 31.8 g/day and of sodium phenylbutyrate ranging from 1.3 to 31.7 g/day. Plasma metabolite levels varied widely, with average fluctuation indices ranging from 1979% to 5690% for phenylbutyric acid, 843% to 3931% for phenylacetic acid, and 881% to 1434% for phenylacetylglutamine. Mean percent recovery of phenylbutyric acid as urinary phenylacetylglutamine was 66.4 and 69.0 for pediatric patients and 68.7 and 71.4 for adult patients on glycerol phenylbutyrate and sodium phenylbutyrate, respectively. The correlation with dose was strongest for urinary phenylacetylglutamine excretion, either as morning spot urine (r = 0.730, p < 0.001) or as total 24-hour excretion (r = 0.791 p

[ital K][sup +]-nucleus quasielastic cross sections measured for a laboratory kaon beam momentum of 705 MeV/[ital c] are presented for 3-momentum transfers of 300 and 500 MeV/[ital c]. The measured differential cross sections for C, Ca, and Pb at 500 MeV/[ital c] are used to deduce the effective number of nucleons participating in the scattering, which are compared with estimates based on the eikonal approximation. The long mean free path expected for [ital K][sup +] mesons in nuclei is found. Double differential cross sections for C and Ca are compared to relativistic nuclear structure calculations.

Background: There is an increased risk of new basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) developing in a person who has had a BCC. Objective: This study attempts to define the magnitude of this increased risk. Methods: The charts of 260 white patients with a histologically proven BCC were reviewed for the occurrence of new BCCs. The cumulative 5-year incidence (modified life-table method) for new BCCs developing in these patients was compared with the 5-year incidence in the general white population of the United States. Results: Of the 260 patients, new BCCs developed in 137 within an average of 38.3 months, a 5-year cumulative rate of one or more new BCCs of 45.2%. The yearly risk for new BCCs developing in the study population remained high during the 5-year interval. In the general white population of the United States, the maximal 5-year incidence was calculated to be 5% (p Conclusion: Patients with a history of BCC require life-long follow-up because of the high probability of new BCCs developing.

Synchrotron radiation is emitted whenever a beam of charged particles passes though a magnetic field. The power emitted is strongly dependent on the relativistic Lorentz factor of the particles, which itself is proportional to the beam energy and inversely proportional to the particle rest mass. Thus, synchrotron radiation is usually associated with electron accelerators, which are commonly used as light sources. However the largest proton machines reach sufficiently high energies to make synchrotron light useful for diagnostic purposes. The Large Hadron Collider at CERN will accelerate protons up to an energy of 7TeV. An optical arrangement has been made which focuses synchrotron light from two LHC magnets to image the cross-section of the beam. It is also planned to use this setup to produce a longitudinal profile of the beam by use of fast Single Photon Counting. This is complicated by the bunched nature of the beam which needs to be measured with a very large dynamic range. In this contribution we present early experimental data of the transverse LHC beam profile together with a scheme for measuring the longitudinal profile with a time resolution of 50 ps. It includes the use of a gating regime to increase the dynamic range of the photon counter and a three-stage correction algorithm to compensate for the detector's deadtime, afterpulsing and pile-up effects.

The total cross sections for ${\mathit{K}}^{+}$ mesons on carbon and deuterium nuclei have been measured at eleven momenta in the range 450--740 MeV/c. The experimental technique was of the standard transmission type. The ${\mathit{K}}^{+}$ meson is the least strongly interacting of available hadronic probes, with a long mean free path in nuclear matter. At low incident momentum the ${\mathit{K}}^{+}$N interaction is dominated by the ${\mathit{S}}_{11}$ phase shift and varies slowly with energy. These characteristics make the ${\mathit{K}}^{+}$ an ideal tool for probing the nuclear volume to reveal nuclear medium effects. Measurements of the ratio of the total cross sections, per nucleon, of ${\mathit{K}}^{+\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}12}$C to ${\mathit{K}}^{+\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$d have been suggested as a way to reveal effects of the nuclear medium. The total cross section ratios are found to lie significantly above those predicted by the usual nuclear medium corrections. This suggests that novel phenomena are taking place within the nucleus. Several models which incorporate such phenomena are discussed, including nucleon ``swelling,'' mass rescaling, nuclear pions, and relativistic effects.

Background: The risk for the development of malignant melanoma has been reported to be higher in persons with more formal education than in individuals with less. Objective: To study whether those with more formal education are indeed at more risk for malignant melanoma than those with less formal education. Methods: This case-control study explores the relation between education and melanoma risk by analyzing data collected by the American Cancer Society. A total of 1.2 million people were surveyed for a history of cancer and followed up for 6 years for the development of any cancer. In total, 2780 white persons had a history of malignant melanoma or developed malignant melanoma during the study period. The controls were age-, sex-, and geographically matched white persons selected from the remaining people enrolled. Results: Both men and women were shown to have a statistically significant increase in the relative risk for malignant melanoma with increasing education level ( p p = 0.001, respectively). This relation was more striking in men when the relative risk with 95% confidence interval was calculated by sex for each education level. Conclusion: Americans with more formal education are at greater risk for malignant melanoma than those with less education.

International audience; OBJECTIVE: Mapping of transrectal ultrasonographic (TRUS) prostate biopsies is of fundamental importance for either diagnostic purposes or the management and treatment of prostate cancer, but the localization of the cores seems inaccurate. Our objective was to evaluate the capacities of an operator to plan transrectal prostate biopsies under 2-dimensional TRUS guidance using a registration algorithm to represent the localization of biopsies in a reference 3-dimensional ultrasonographic volume. METHODS: Thirty-two patients underwent a series of 12 prostate biopsies under local anesthesia performed by 1 operator using a TRUS probe combined with specific third-party software to verify that the biopsies were indeed conducted within the planned targets. RESULTS: The operator reached 71% of the planned targets with substantial variability that depended on their localization (100% success rate for targets in the middle and right parasagittal parts versus 53% for targets in the left lateral base). Feedback from this system after each series of biopsies enabled the operator to significantly improve his dexterity over the course of time (first 16 patients: median score, 7 of 10 and cumulated median biopsy length in targets of 90 mm; last 16 patients, median score, 9 of 10 and a cumulated median length of 121 mm; P = .046). CONCLUSIONS: In addition to being a useful tool to improve the distribution of prostate biopsies, the potential of this system is above all the preparation of a detailed "map" of each patient showing biopsy zones without substantial changes in routine clinical practices.

International audience; Until recently, Computer-Aided Medical Interventions (CAMI) and Medical Robotics have focused on rigid and non deformable anatomical structures. Nowadays, special attention is paid to soft tissues, raising complex issues due to their mobility and deformation. Mini-invasive digestive surgery was probably one of the first fields where soft tissues were handled through the development of simulators, tracking of anatomical structures and specific assistance robots. However, other clinical domains, for instance urology, are concerned. Indeed, laparoscopic surgery, new tumour destruction techniques (e.g. HIFU, radiofrequency, or cryoablation), increasingly early detection of cancer, and use of interventional and diagnostic imaging modalities, recently opened new challenges to the urologist and scientists involved in CAMI. This resulted in the last five years in a very significant increase of research and developments of computer-aided urology systems. In this paper, we propose a description of the main problems related to computer-aided diagnostic and therapy of soft tissues and give a survey of the different types of assistance offered to the urologist: robotization, image fusion, surgical navigation. Both research projects and operational industrial systems are discussed.

Chemical stabilization resulting in increased resistance to proteolytic degradation is one of the approaches in prevention of post-implantational aneurysm development in decellularized natural vascular scaffolds. Recently, tannic acid (TA) and tannic acid mimicking dendrimers (TAMD) have been suggested as potential stabilization agents for collagen and elastin. The aim of this work was to determine the stabilizing effects of TAMD on decellularized natural scaffolds. Vascular scaffolds fabricated from small intestine submucosa (SIS) and SIS plane sheets (Cook Biotech Inc.) were used. The biomechanical properties of the SIS vascular graft segments treated with TA and TAMD were tested. The effect of TAMD treatment on resistance to proteolytic degradation was evaluated by measuring biomechanical properties of TAMD stabilized and non-stabilized SIS specimens after incubation in collagenase solution. It was shown that treatment with TA as well as with TAMD increased the strength of tubular SIS as well as their resistance to proteolytic biodegradation manifested by preservation of biomechanical properties after collagenase treatment. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that treatment with TAMD increased the periodical pattern typical of collagen fiber ultrastructure as a result of the "mordant" effect. The possible collagen cross-linking effect of TAMD on SIS was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The treatment with TAMD induced a small, but detectable cross-linking effect, suggesting that TAMD do not establish extensive covalent cross links within the extracellular matrix but rather interact with collagen, thus rendering SIS scaffolds more resistant to proteolytic degradation.
