A general overview of the phenomenon of automatic continuity of homomorphisms between Polish groups is given. In particular, we study variants and improvements of the closed graph theorem, applying these to the problem of continuity of universally measurable homomorphisms and also to gauge the amount of choice needed to construct discontinuous homomorphisms between Polish groups. Furthermore, we provide a simple proof of automatic continuity in the context of homeomorphism groups of compact manifolds and a complete reworking of automatic continuity theory in the context of isometry groups of highly homogeneous complete metric structures.

Using methods of descriptive set theory, in particular, the determinacy of infinite games of perfect information, we answer several questions from the literature regarding different notions of bases in Banach spaces and lattices. For the case of Banach lattices, our results follow from a general theorem stating that (under the assumption of analytic determinacy), every $\sigma$-order basis $(e_n)$ for a Banach lattice $X=[e_n]$ is a uniform basis, and every uniform basis is Schauder. Moreover, the notions of order and $\sigma$-order bases coincide when $X=[e_n].$ Regarding Banach spaces, we address two problems concerning filter Schauder bases for Banach spaces, i.e., in which the norm convergence of partial sums is replaced by norm convergence along some appropriate filter on $\mathbb N$. We first provide an example of a Banach space admitting such a filter Schauder basis, but no ordinary Schauder basis. We describe several ordinal indices that are capable of detecting, according to various metric notions of faithfulness, the embeddability between pairs of Polish spaces. These embeddability ranks are of theoretical interest but seem difficult to estimate in practice. Embeddability ranks, which are easier to estimate in practice, are embeddability ranks generated by Schauder bases. These embeddability are inspired by the nonlinear indices \`a la Bourgain from \cite{BLMS_FM}. In particular, we resolve a problem \cite[Problem 3.10]{BLMS_FM} regarding the necessity of additional set-theoretic axioms regarding the main coarse universality result of \cite{BLMS_FM}., Comment: 10 pages

We study the cohomology of isometric group actions on (super) reflexive Banach spaces with a focus on the relation between finite conjugacy classes and split exactness of cochain complexes. In particular, we show that, if a uniformly convex Banach module has no almost invariant vectors under the FC-centre of the acting group, then the associated cochain complex is split exact. Other similar rigidity results are established that are related to prior work of Bader - Furman - Gelander - Monod, Bader - Rosendal - Sauer and Nowak.

If $X$ is an almost transitive Banach space with amenable isometry group (for example, if $X=L^p([0,1])$ with $1\leqslant p<\infty$) and $X$ admits a uniformly continuous map $X\overset\phi\longrightarrow E$ into a Banach space $E$ satisfying $$\inf_{\|x-y\|=r} \| \phi(x)-\phi(y)\|>0 $$ for some $r>0$, then $X$ admits a simultaneously uniform and coarse embedding into a Banach space $V$ that is finitely representable in $L^2(E)$., Comment: A correction is made to a citation. Megrelishvili defines \emph{light groups} of isomorphisms of a Banach space as the groups on which the Weak and Strong Operator Topologies coincide, and proves that every bounded group of isomorphisms of Banach spaces with the Point of Continuity Property (PCP) is light. We investigate this concept for isomorphism groups $G$ of classical Banach spaces $X$ without the PCP, specially isometry groups, and relate it to the existence of $G$-invariant LUR or strictly convex renormings of $X$.

We discuss the problem of deciding when a metrisable topological group $G$ has a canonically defined local Lipschitz geometry. This naturally leads to the concept of minimal metrics on $G$, that we characterise intrinsically in terms of a linear growth condition on powers of group elements. Combining this with work on the large scale geometry of topological groups, we also identify the class of metrisable groups admitting a canonical global Lipschitz geometry. In turn, minimal metrics connect with Hilbert's fifth problem for completely metrisable groups and we show, assuming that the set of squares is sufficiently rich, that every element of some identity neighbourhood belongs to a $1$-parameter subgroup.

A result due to M. Gromov states that any two finitely generated groups {\Gamma} and {\Lambda} are quasi-isometric if and only if they admit a topological coupling, i.e., a commuting pair of proper continuous cocompact actions $\Gamma\curvearrowright X\curvearrowleft \Lambda$ on a locally compact Hausdorff space. This result is extended here to all (compactly generated) locally compact second countable groups.

We study uniform and coarse embeddings between Banach spaces and topological groups. A particular focus is put on equivariant embeddings, i.e., continuous cocycles associated to continuous affine isometric actions of topological groups on separable Banach spaces with varying geometry.

We introduce and study the framework of compact metric structures and their associated notions of isomorphisms such as homeomorphic and bi-Lipschitz isomorphism. This is subsequently applied to model various classification problems in analysis such as isomorphism of C*-algebras and affine homeomorphism of Choquet simplices, where among other things we provide a simple proof of the completeness of the isomorphism relation of separable, simple, nuclear C*-algebras recently established by M. Sabok.

Let M be a compact manifold. We show the identity component $\mathrm{Homeo}_0(M)$ of the group of self-homeomorphisms of M has a well-defined quasi-isometry type, and study its large scale geometry. Through examples, we relate this large scale geometry to both the topology of M and the dynamics of group actions on M. This gives a rich family of examples of non-locally compact groups to which one can apply the large-scale methods developed in previous work of the second author.

We investigate questions of maximal symmetry in Banach spaces and the structure of certain bounded non-unitarisable groups on Hilbert space. In particular, we provide structural information about bounded groups with an essentially unique invariant complemented subspace. This is subsequently combined with rigidity results for the unitary representation of ${\rm Aut}(T)$ on $\ell_2(T)$, where $T$ is the countably infinite regular tree, to describe the possible bounded subgroups of ${\rm GL}(\mathcal H)$ extending a well-known non-unitarisable representation of $\mathbb F_\infty$. As a related result, we also show that a transitive norm on a separable Banach space must be strictly convex.

We develop a theory of large scale geometry of metrisable topological groups that, in a significant number of cases, allows one to define and identify a unique quasi-isometry type intrinsic to the topological group. Moreover, this quasi-isometry type coincides with the classical notion in the case of compactly generated locally compact groups and, for the additive group of a Banach space, is simply that of the corresponding Banach space. In particular, we characterise the class of separable metrisable groups admitting metrically proper, respectively, maximal compatible left-invariant metrics. Moreover, we develop criteria for when a metrisable group admits metrically proper affine isometric actions on Banach spaces of various degress of convexity and reflexivity. A further study of the large scale geometry of automorphism groups of countable first order model theoretical structures is separated into a companion paper.

The present article constitutes the third part of our study of the large scale geometry of metrisable groups, the first two part appearing in the companion paper "Large scale geometry of metrisable groups". In this third part, we present a detailed study of the theory in the special case of non-Archimedean Polish groups, that is, automorphism groups of countable first order structures.

We initiate a study of cohomological aspects of weakly almost periodic group representations on Banach spaces, in particular, isometric representations on reflexive Banach spaces. Using the Ryll-Nardzewski fixed point Theorem, we prove a vanishing result for the restriction map (with respect to a subgroup) in the reduced cohomology of weakly periodic representations. Combined with the Alaoglu-Birkhoff decomposition theorem, this generalizes and complements theorems on continuous group cohomology by several authors., Comment: added more references; 11 pages

We prove that the isomorphism relation for separable C$^*$-algebras, and also the relations of complete and $n$-isometry for operator spaces and systems, are Borel reducible to the orbit equivalence relation of a Polish group action on a standard Borel space.

We prove a game theoretic dichotomy for $G_{\delta\sigma}$ sets of block sequences in vector spaces that extends, on the one hand, the block Ramsey theorem of W. T. Gowers proved for analytic sets of block sequences and, on the other hand, M. Davis' proof of $G_{\delta\sigma}$ determinacy.

We give a simple argument to show that if {\alpha} is an affine isometric action of a product G x H of topological groups on a reflexive Banach space X with linear part {\pi}, then either {\pi}(H) fixes a unit vector or {\alpha}|G almost fixes a point on X. It follows that any affine isometric action of an abelian group on a reflexive Banach space X, whose linear part fixes no unit vectors, almost fixes points on X.

We present a comprehensive theory of boundedness properties for Polish groups developed with a main focus on Roelcke precompactness (precompactness of the lower uniformity) and Property (OB) (boundedness of all isometric actions on separable metric spaces). In particular, these properties are characterised by the orbit structure of isometric actions on metric spaces and isometric or continuous affine representations on separable Banach spaces.

A display of a topological group G on a Banach space X is a topological isomorphism of G with the isometry group Isom(X,||.||) for some equivalent norm ||.|| on X, where the latter group is equipped with the strong operator topology. Displays of Polish groups on separable real spaces are studied. It is proved that any closed subgroup of the infinite symmetric group S_\infty containing a non-trivial central involution admits a display on any of the classical spaces c0, C([0,1]), lp and Lp for 1 <=p <\infty. Also, for any Polsih group G, there exists a separable space X on which {-1,1} x G has a display., Comment: 27 pages

We study problems of maximal symmetry in Banach spaces. This is done by providing an analysis of the structure of small subgroups of the general linear group GL(X), where X is a separable reflexive Banach space. In particular, we provide the first known example of a Banach space X without any equivalent maximal norm, or equivalently such that GL(X) contains no maximal bounded subgroup. Moreover, this space X may be chosen to be super-reflexive.

We give an intrinsic characterisation of the separable reflexive Banach spaces that embed into separable reflexive spaces with an unconditional basis all of whose normalised block sequences with the same growth rate are equivalent. This uses methods of E. Odell and T. Schlumprecht.

We analyse several examples of separable Banach spaces, some of them new, and relate them to several dichotomies obtained in the previous paper Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, by classifying them according to which side of the dichotomies they fall. A Banach space with a Schauder basis is said to be $\alpha$-minimal for some countable ordinal $\alpha$ if, for any two block subspaces, the Bourgain embeddability index of one into the other is at least $\alpha$. We prove a dichotomy that characterises when a Banach space has an $\alpha$-minimal subspace, which contributes to the ongoing project, initiated by W. T. Gowers, of classifying separable Banach spaces by identifying characteristic subspaces.

It is proved that any countable index, universally measurable subgroup of a Polish group is open. By consequence, any universally measurable homomorphism from a Polish group into the infinite symmetric group $S_\infty$ is continuous. It is also shown that a universally measurable homomorphism from a Polish group into a second countable, locally compact group is necessarily continuous.

Given a finitely generated group $\Gamma$, we study the space ${\rm Isom}(\Gamma,{\mathbb Q\mathbb U})$ of all actions of $\Gamma$ by isometries of the rational Urysohn metric space ${\mathbb Q\mathbb U}$, where ${\rm Isom}(\Gamma,{\mathbb Q\mathbb U})$ is equipped with the topology it inherits seen as a closed subset of ${\rm Isom}({\mathbb Q\mathbb U})^\Gamma$. When $\Gamma$ is the free group $\F_n$ on $n$ generators this space is just ${\rm Isom}({\mathbb Q\mathbb U})^n$, but is in general significantly more complicated. We prove that when $\Gamma$ is finitely generated Abelian there is a generic point in ${\rm Isom}(\Gamma,{\mathbb Q\mathbb U})$, i.e., there is a comeagre set of mutually conjugate isometric actions of $\Gamma$ on ${\mathbb Q\mathbb U}$.

We consider actions of completely metrisable groups on simplicial trees in the context of the Bass--Serre theory. Our main result characterises continuity of the amplitude function corresponding to a given action. Under fairly mild conditions on a completely metrisable group $G$, namely, that the set of elements generating a non-discrete or finite subgroup is somewhere dense, we show that in any decomposition as a free product with amalgamation, $G=A\ast_CB$, the amalgamated groups $A$, $B$ and $C$ are open in $G$.

We construct a family of separable Hilbertian operator spaces, such that the relation of complete isomorphism between the subspaces of each member of this family is complete $\ks$. We also investigate some interesting properties of completely unconditional bases of the spaces from this family. We prove an exact, i.e., formulated without $\Delta$-expansions, Ramsey principle for infinite block sequences in vector spaces over countable fields, where the two sides of the dichotomic principle are represented by respectively winning strategies in Gowers' block sequence game and winning strategies in the infinite asymptotic game. This allows us to recover Gowers' dichotomy theorem for block sequences in normed vector spaces by a simple application of the basic determinacy theorem for infinite asymptotic games.

We investigate extensions of S. Solecki's theorem on closing off finite partial isometries of metric spaces \cite{solecki1} and obtain the following exact equivalence: any action of a discrete group $\Gamma$ by isometries of a metric space is finitely approximable if and only if any product of finitely generated subgroups of $\Gamma$ is closed in the profinite topology on $\Gamma$.

It is known that there is a comeagre set of mutually conjugate measure preserving homeomorphisms of Cantor space equipped with the coinflipping probability measure, i.e., Haar measure. We show that the generic measure preserving homeomorphism is moreover conjugate to all of its powers. It follows that the generic measure preserving homeomorphism extends to an action of $(\mathbb Q,+)$ by measure preserving homeomorphisms, and, in fact, to an action of the locally compact ring $\mathfrak A$ of finite ad\`eles. Similarly, S. Solecki has proved that there is a comeagre set of mutually conjugate isometries of the rational Urysohn metric space. We prove that these are all conjugate with their powers and therefore also embed into $\mathbb Q$-actions. In fact, we extend these actions to actions of $\mathfrak A$ as in the case of measure preserving homeomorphisms. We also consider a notion of topological similarity in Polish groups and use this to give simplified proofs of the meagreness of conjugacy classes in the automorphism group of the standard probability space and in the isometry group of the Urysohn metric space.

We prove three new dichotomies for Banach spaces \`a la W.T. Gowers' dichotomies. The three dichotomies characterise respectively the spaces having no minimal subspaces, having no subsequentially minimal basic sequences, and having no subspaces crudely finitely representable in all of their subspaces. We subsequently use these results to make progress on Gowers' program of classifying Banach spaces by finding characteristic spaces present in every space. Also, the results are used to embed any partial order of size $\aleph_1$ into the subspaces of any space without a minimal subspace ordered by isomorphic embeddability.

It is proved that the relation of isomorphism between separable Banach spaces is a complete analytic equivalence relation, i.e., that any analytic equivalence relation Borel reduces to it. Thus, separable Banach spaces up to isomorphism provide complete invariants for a great number of mathematical structures up to their corresponding notion of isomorphism. The same is shown to hold for (1) complete separable metric spaces up to uniform homeomorphism, (2) separable Banach spaces up to Lipschitz isomorphism, and (3) up to (complemented) biembeddability, (4) Polish groups up to topological isomorphism, and (5) Schauder bases up to permutative equivalence. Some of the constructions rely on methods recently developed by S. Argyros and P. Dodos.

We study infinite asymptotic games in Banach spaces with an F.D.D. and prove that analytic games are determined by characterising precisely the conditions for the players to have winning strategies. These results are applied to characterise spaces embeddable into $\ell_p$ sums of finite dimensional spaces, extending results of Odell and Schlumprecht, and to study various notions of homogeneity of bases and Banach spaces. These results are related to questions of rapidity of subsequence extraction from normalised weakly null sequences.

We prove that arbitrary homomorphisms from one of the groups ${\rm Homeo}(\ca)$, ${\rm Homeo}(\ca)^\N$, ${\rm Aut}(\Q,<)$, ${\rm Homeo}(\R)$, or ${\rm Homeo}(S^1)$ into a separable group are automatically continuous. This has consequences for the representations of these groups as discrete groups. For example, it follows, in combination with a result on V.G. Pestov, that any action of the discrete group ${\rm Homeo}_+(\R)$ by homeomorphisms on a compact metric space has a fixed point.

We show that any homomorphism from the homeomorphism group of a compact 2-manifold, with the compact-open topology, or equivalently, with the topology of uniform convergence, into a separable topological group is automatically continuous.

We consider the unitary group $\U$ of complex, separable, infinite-dimensional Hilbert space as a discrete group. It is proved that, whenever $\U$ acts by isometries on a metric space, every orbit is bounded. Equivalently, $\U$ is not the union of a countable chain of proper subgroups, and whenever $\E\subseteq \U$ generates $\U$, it does so by words of a fixed finite length.

A topological group G is defined to have property (OB) if any G-action by isometries on a metric space, which is separately continuous, has bounded orbits. We study this topological analogue of the socalled Bergman property in the context of Polish groups, where we show it to have several interesting reformulations and consequences. We subsequently apply the results obtained in order to verify property (OB) for a number of groups of isometries and homeomorphism groups of compact metric spaces. We also give a proof that the isometry group of the rational Urysohn metric space of diameter 1 is Bergman.

We study topological properties of conjugacy classes in Polish groups, with emphasis on automorphism groups of homogeneous countable structures. We first consider the existence of dense conjugacy classes (the topological Rokhlin property). We then characterize when an automorphism group admits a comeager conjugacy class (answering a question of Truss) and apply this to show that the homeomorphism group of the Cantor space has a comeager conjugacy class (answering a question of Akin-Hurley-Kennedy). Finally, we study Polish groups that admit comeager conjugacy classes in any dimension (in which case the groups are said to admit ample generics). We show that Polish groups with ample generics have the small index property (generalizing results of Hodges-Hodkinson-Lascar-Shelah) and arbitrary homomorphisms from such groups into separable groups are automatically continuous. Moreover, in the case of oligomorphic permutation groups, they have uncountable cofinality and the Bergman property. These results in particular apply to automorphism groups of many $\omega$-stable, $\aleph_0$-categorical structures and of the random graph. In this connection, we also show that the infinite symmetric group $S_\infty$ has a unique non-trivial separable group topology. For several interesting groups we also establish Serre's properties (FH) and (FA).

A Banach space contains either a minimal subspace or a continuum of incomparable subspaces. General structure results for analytic equivalence relations are applied in the context of Banach spaces to show that if $E_0$ does not reduce to isomorphism of the subspaces of a space, in particular, if the subspaces of the space admit a classification up to isomorphism by real numbers, then any subspace with an unconditional basis is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and has an isomorphically homogeneous subsequence.

We show that any Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or a minimal subspace. We define an ergodic Banach space $X$ as a space such that $E_0$ Borel reduces to isomorphism on the set of subspaces of $X$, and show that every Banach space is either ergodic or contains a subspace with an unconditional basis $ which is complementably universal for the family of its block-subspaces. We also use our methods to get uniformity results; for example, in combination with a result of B. Maurey, V. Milman and N. Tomczak-Jaegermann, we show that an unconditional basis of a Banach space, of which every block-subspace is complemented, must be asymptotically $c_0$ or $l_p$.

We consider a normalized basis in a Banach space with the following property: any normalized block sequence of the basis has a subsequence equivalent to the basis. We show that under uniformity or other natural assumptions, a basis with this property is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ or $\ell_p$. If a Banach space has an unconditional basis it either contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and satisfies other regularity properties. An HI Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces.
