Search

Rapidly rotating newborn magnetars, which originate from binary neutron star (NS) mergers and serve as the central engines of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), may leave some imprints on their prompt gamma-ray light curves even though they are far from their radiating fireballs. A high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) would be a unique feature for the magnetar central engine, especially a hypermassive magnetar. By conducting a systematic analysis of the prompt gamma-ray light curves from 605 short GRBs observed by {\em Fermi}/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, we have identified such QPO signals in three GRBs (e.g. GRB 120323A, GRB 181222B, and GRB 190606A). The QPOs that peaked at $1258^{+6}_{-6}$ Hz for GRB 120323A, $623^{+4}_{-4}$ Hz for GRB 181222B, and $1410^{+4}_{-5}$ Hz for GRB 190606A are all with a confidence level above 5.2 $\sigma$. Magnetars are potential energy sources or central engines for numerous transient phenomena in the Universe. How newborn magnetars evolve in different environments remains an open question. Based on both observed and candidate magnetars, it is found that the periods of all magnetars or candidates appear as a bimodal distribution, and are defined as the ``long-P'' and ``short-P'' magnetar subclasses, respectively. We find that for the ``short-P'' subclass of magnetars, the $\dot{P}$ values also appear as a bimodal distribution, and therefore can be classified as ``high-$\dot{P}$ short-P'' and ``low-$\dot{P}$ short-P'' magnetar subclasses. In this paper, we use Monte Carlo simulations to generate synthetic magnetar populations and investigate the evolution of the ``high-$\dot{P}$ short-P'' and ``low-$\dot{P}$ short-P'' magnetar subclasses by considering both the magnetar spin and inclination, as well as the decay of their magnetic field within their evolution in both vacuum and plasma-filled magnetospheres. We find that the magnetar evolution is dependent on both spin and magnetic field, but seems to be insensitive to inclination evolution and magnetospheric environment for the ``high-$\dot{P}$ short-P'' sub-class. In comparison for the case of ``high-$\dot{P}$ short-P'', the magnetar evolution is dependent on spin, magnetic field, and inclination evolution, as well as the magnetospheric environment. The best evolution model should be the case of inclination evolution in vacuum with a small value of $\overline{\mathrm{FOM}}$. The differences in the best-fit parameters also suggest that the ``high-$\dot{P}$ short-P'' and ``low-$\dot{P}$ short-P'' magnetar subclasses may be tracking with different evolution channels., Comment: 18 pages, 2 Tables, and 9 Figures. The nearby long-duration GRB 191019A recently detected by Swift lacks an associated supernova and belongs to a host galaxy with little star formation activity, suggesting that the origin of this burst is the result of a merger of two compact objects with dynamical interactions in a high-density medium of an active galactic nucleus. Given the potential motivation of this event, and given that it occurs in such a high-density environment, the ejecta-circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction cannot be ignored as possibly contributing to the kilonova emission. Here, we theoretically calculate the kilonova emission by considering the contribution of the ejecta-CSM interaction in a high-density environment. We find that the contribution to the kilonova emission from the ejecta-CSM interaction will dominate at a later time, and a smaller ejecta mass will have a stronger kilonova emission from the ejecta-CSM interaction. Moreover, we try to apply it to GRB 191019A, but we find that it is difficult to identify the possible kilonova emission from the observations, due to the contribution of the bright host galaxy. On the other hand, less injected mass (less than $M_{\rm ej}=2\times10^{-5}M_{\odot}$) will be required if one can detect the kilonova emission associated with a GRB 191019A-like event in the future. Black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) mergers are expected to emit gravitational-wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) counterparts when the NS is tidally disrupted or plunges into the BH. Recently, GW 200105 and GW200115 were claimed as originating in BH-NS mergers, even GW 200105 remains in debate. Several optical source candidates are reported to possible associate with the two GW events, but not confirmed yet. In this work, we assume that the BH is charged (the NS is naturally charged) and try to constrain the charge of the BH by using the possible associated EM emission from the charged BH and NS system working in the inspiral regime. We adopt electric and magnetic dipole radiations for the binaries which power a Poynting-flux-dominated outflow to accelerate electrons. Then, it produces the observed EM radiation via synchrotron radiation. We find that the conversion efficiency in the X-ray band is much higher than that of the ultraviolet (UV), near-infrared, and radio bands. The estimated maximum charge-to-mass ratio (the charge for unit mass) of the BH is $1.12\times 10^{-6}$ and $1.53\times 10^{-6}$ esu for the binary systems of GW200105 and GW200115, respectively, if magnetic field strength $B_{p}\lesssim ~10^{16}$ G and period $P>~1$ ms for the NS spin., Comment: 13 pages, 4 Tables, and 2 Figures. The growing observed evidence shows that the long- and short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from massive star core-collapse and the merger of compact stars, respectively. GRB 201221D is a short-duration GRB lasting $\sim 0.1$ s without extended emission (EE) at high redshift $z=1.046$. By analyzing data observed with the Swift/BAT and Fermi/GBM, we find that a cutoff power-law model can adequately fit the spectrum with a soft $E_{\rm p}=113^{+9}_{-7}$ keV, and isotropic energy $E_{\gamma,iso} =1.36^{+0.17}_{-0.14}\times 10^{51}~\rm erg$. In order to reveal the possible physical origin of GRB 201221D, we adopted multi-wavelength criteria (e.g., Amati relation, $\varepsilon$-parameter, amplitude parameter, local event rate density, luminosity function, and properties of the host galaxy), and find that most of the observations of GRB 201221D favor a compact star merger origin. Moreover, we find that $\hat{\alpha}$ is larger than $2+\hat{\beta}$ in the prompt emission phase which suggests that the emission region is possibly undergoing acceleration during the prompt emission phase with a Poynting-flux-dominated jet., Comment: 15 pages, 3 tables, 11 Figures. Weak and continuous gravitational-wave (GW) radiation can be produced by newborn magnetars with deformed structure and is expected to be detected by the Einstein telescope in the near future. In this work we assume that the deformed structure of a nascent magnetar is not caused by a single mechanism but by multiple time-varying quadrupole moments such as those present in magnetically induced deformation, starquake-induced ellipticity, and accretion column-induced deformation. The magnetar loses its angular momentum through accretion, magnetic dipole radiation, and GW radiation. Within this scenario, we calculate the evolution of GWs from a newborn magnetar by considering the above three deformations. We find that the GW evolution depends on the physical parameters of the magnetar (e.g., period and surface magnetic field), the adiabatic index, and the fraction of poloidal magnetic energy to the total magnetic energy. In general the GW radiation from a magnetically induced deformation is dominant if the surface magnetic field of the magnetar is large, but the GW radiation from magnetar starquakes is more efficient when there is a larger adiabatic index if all other magnetar parameters remain the same. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with supernovae (SNe) are believed to originate from massive star core-collapse events, whereas short-duration GRBs that are related to compact star mergers are expected to be accompanied by kilonovae. GRB 211227A, which lasted about 84 s, had an initial short/hard spike followed by a series of soft gamma-ray extended emission at redshift $z=$0.228. We performed follow-up observations of the optical emission using BOOTES, LCOGT, and the Lijiang 2.4m telescope, but we detected no associated supernova signature, even down to very stringent limits at such a low redshift. We observed the host galaxy within a large error-circle and roughly estimate the physical offset of GRB 211227A as $20.47\pm14.47$ kpc from the galaxy center. These properties are similar to those of GRB 060614, and suggest that the progenitor of GRB 211227A is not favored to be associated with the death of massive stars. Hence, we propose that GRB 211227A originates from a compact star merger. Calculating pseudo-kilonova emission for this case by adopting the typical parameters, we find that any associated pseudo-kilonova is too faint to be detected. If this is the case, it explains naturally the characteristics of the prompt emission, the lack of SN and kilonova emission, and the large physical offset from the galaxy center., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, and 1 Table. We used archival data from the \emph{Chandra X-ray Observatory} (\emph{Chandra}) and the \emph{Hubble Space Telescope}, to identify 334 candidate X-ray binary (XRB) systems and their potential optical counterparts in the interacting galaxy pair NGC 5194/5195 (M51). We present the catalog and data analysis of X-ray and optical properties for those sources, from the deep $892$ ks \emph{Chandra} observations, along with the magnitudes of candidate optical sources as measured in the $8.16$ ks \emph{HST} observations. The X-ray luminosity function of the X-ray sources above a few times $10^{36}\, {\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$ follows a power law $N(>L_{X,b})\propto L_{X,b}^{1-\alpha}$ with $\alpha=1.65\pm0.03$. Aproximately 80\% of sources are variable over a 30 day window. Observationally, there is a small fraction of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with prompt emission observed by Fermi/GBM that are composed of two pulses. Occasionally, the distance to a GRB may be lensed when a high mass astrophysical object resides in the path between the GRB source and observer. In this paper, we describe GRB 200716C, which has a two-pulse emission and duration of a few seconds. We present a Bayesian analysis identifying gravitational lensing in both temporal and spectral properties, and calculate the time delay ($\Delta t\sim 1.92$ s) and magnification ($\gamma\sim 1.5$) between those two pulses based on the temporal fits. One can roughly estimate the lens mass to be about $2.4\times 10^{5}~M_{\odot}$ in the rest frame. We also calculate the false alarm probability for this detection to be about 0.07\% with trial factors, and a present-day number density of about $808 \rm~Mpc^{-3}$ with an energy density $\Omega\sim 1.4\times 10^{-3}$. A stellar mass black hole can grow its mass noticeably through Bondi accretion, if it is embedded in an extremely dense and massive molecular cloud with slow motion with respect to the ambient medium for an extended period of time. This provides a novel, yet challenging channel for the formation of massive stellar-mass black holes. The observed internal plateau of X-ray emission in some short GRBs suggests the formation of a remnant supra-massive magnetar following a double neutron star (NS) merger. In this paper, we assume that the rotational energy is lost mainly via gravitational wave (GW) radiation instead of magnetic dipole (MD) radiation, and present further constraints on the NS nuclear equation of state (EoS) via mass quadrupole deformation and r-mode fluid oscillations of the magnetar. We present two short GRBs with measured redshifts, 101219A and 160821B, whose X-ray light curves exhibit an internal plateau. This suggests that a supra-massive NS may survive as the central engine. By considering twelve NS EoSs, within the mass quadrupole deformation scenario we find that the GM1, DD2, and DDME2 models give an $M_{\rm p}$ band falling within the 2$\sigma$ region of the proto-magnetar mass distribution for $\varepsilon=0.01$. This is consistent with the constraints from the MD radiation dominated model of rotational energy loss. However, for an r-mode fluid oscillation model with $\alpha=0.1$ the data suggest that the NS EOS is close to the Shen and APR models, which is obviously different from the MD radiation dominated and mass quadrupole deformation cases., Comment: 7 pages, 1 table, and 4 figures. Short GRBs with extended emission (EE) that are composed initially of a short-hard spike and followed by a long-lasting EE, are thought to be classified as a subsection of short GRBs. The narrow energy band available during the {\em Swift} era combined with a lack of spectral information prevented discovery of the intrinsic properties of those events. In this paper, we performed a systematic search of short GRBs with EE by using all available {\em Fermi}/GBM data. The search identified 26 GBM-detected short GRBs with EE that are similar to GRB 060614 observed by {\em Swift}/BAT. We focus on investigating the spectral and temporal properties for both the hard spike and the EE components of all 26 GRBs, and explore differences and possible correlations between them. We find that while the peak energy ($E_{\rm p}$) of the hard spikes is a little bit harder than that of the EE, but their fluences are comparable. The harder $E_{\rm p}$ seems to correspond to a larger fluence and peak flux with a large scatter for both the hard spike and EE components. Moreover, the $E_{\rm p}$ of both the hard spikes and EE are compared to other short GRBs. Finally, we also compare the properties of GRB 170817A with those short GRBs with EE and find no significant statistical differences between them. In response to the need for the Astro2020 Decadal Survey to explicitly engage early career astronomers, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the Early Career Astronomer and Astrophysicist Focus Session (ECFS) on October 8-9, 2018 under the auspices of Committee of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The meeting was attended by fifty six pre-tenure faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral scholars, and senior graduate students, as well as eight former decadal survey committee members, who acted as facilitators. The event was designed to educate early career astronomers about the decadal survey process, to solicit their feedback on the role that early career astronomers should play in Astro2020, and to provide a forum for the discussion of a wide range of topics regarding the astrophysics career path. This white paper presents highlights and themes that emerged during two days of discussion. In Section 1, we discuss concerns that emerged regarding the coming decade and the astrophysics career path, as well as specific recommendations from participants regarding how to address them. We have organized these concerns and suggestions into five broad themes. These include (sequentially): (1) adequately training astronomers in the statistical and computational techniques necessary in an era of "big data", (2) responses to the growth of collaborations and telescopes, (3) concerns about the adequacy of graduate and postdoctoral training, (4) the need for improvements in equity and inclusion in astronomy, and (5) smoothing and facilitating transitions between early career stages. The event GW170817/GRB 170817A, discovered via the successful joint observation of its gravitational wave radiation and its multi-wavelength electromagnetic counterparts, was the first definite "smoking-gun" from the merger of two neutron stars (NSs). However, the remnant of the merger remains unknown. Piro et al. recently claimed that a low-significance X-ray variability in GRB 170817A. By systematically comparing the properties of variability in the afterglow of GRB 170817A and X-ray flares in GRB afterglows, we find that this X-ray variability seems to share similar statistical correlations with X-ray flares in GRB afterglows. We further investigate several possible merger product scenarios to see whether they can produce the observed X-ray variability in GRB 170817A. The first scenario invokes a stable magnetar as the central engine producing the later X-ray variability via differential rotation or fall-back accretion onto the NS. The second scenario invokes a black hole as the central engine with a fall-back accretion process. The final scenario is a central engine with a long-lived supra-massive NS. We find that the first two scenarios have difficulty producing the later X-ray variability, which requires either an impractical NS magnetic field or an extraordinarily large stellar envelope and an extremely long accretion timescale. However, the third scenario seems to be consistent with observations, and the later X-ray variability can be produced by the magnetosphere which is expelled following the collapse of the NS with a $B_p\in(3.6, 13.5)\times10^{13}$ G., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Two-episode emission components separated by quiescent gaps in the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been observed in the {\em Swift} era, but there is a lack of spectral information due to the narrow energy band of the {\em Swift}/Burst Alert Telescope. In this paper, a systematic analysis of the spectral and temporal properties of the prompt emission of 101 {\em Fermi}/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor detected long GRBs show the existence of two-episode emission components in the light curves, with quiescent times of up to hundreds of seconds. We focus on investigating the differences of those two emission episodes. We find that the light curves of the two emission components exhibit different behavior, e.g., a soft emission component that either precedes or follows the main prompt emission or that the intensity of the two emission episodes are comparable with each other. No statistically significant correlation in the duration of the two emission episodes can be claimed. We define a new parameter $\varepsilon$ as the ratio of the peak flux of the first and second emission episodes and find that a higher $\varepsilon$ corresponds to a larger fluence. The preferred spectral model in our analysis is a cutoff power-law model for most GRBs. The distribution of $E_p$ for episodes I and II range from tens of keV to 1000 keV with a lognormal fit and there are no significant differences between them. Moreover, we do not find significant relationships between $\varepsilon$ and $E_p$ for the two emission episodes. The cosmological evolution of primordial black holes (PBHs) is considered. A comprehensive view of the accretion and evaporation histories of PBHs across the entire cosmic history is presented, with focus on the critical mass holes. The critical mass of a PBH for current era evaporation is $M_{cr}\sim 5.1\times10^{14}$ g. Across cosmic time such a black hole will not accrete radiation or matter in sufficient quantity to hasten the inevitable evaporation, if the black hole remains within an average volume of the universe. The accretion rate onto PBHs is most sensitive to the mass of the hole, the sound speed in the cosmological fluid, and the energy density of the accreted components. It is not easy for a PBH to accrete the average cosmological fluid to reach $30M_\odot$ by $z\sim0.1$, the approximate mass and redshift of the merging BHs that were the sources of the gravitational wave events GW150914 and GW151226. A PBH located in an overdense region can undergo enhanced accretion leading to the possibility of growing by many orders of magnitude across cosmic history. Thus, two merging PBHs are a plausible source for the observed gravitational wave events. GRB 160821B is a short gamma-ray burst (GRB) at redshift $z=0.16$, with a duration less than 1 second and without detection of any "extended emission" up to more than 100 seconds in both {\em Swift}/BAT and {\em Fermi}/GBM bands. An X-ray plateau with a sharp drop 180 seconds after the BAT trigger was observed with {\em Swift}/XRT. No supernova or kilo-nova signature was detected. Assuming the central engine of this SGRB is a recently born supra-massive magnetar, we can explain the SGRB as jet radiation and its X-ray plateau as the internal energy dissipation of the pulsar wind as it spins down. We constrain its surface magnetic field as $B_{\rm p}<3.12\times 10^{16}$ G and initial spin period as $P_0< 8.5\times 10^{-3}$ seconds. Its equation of state is consistent with the GM1 model with $M_{\rm TOV} \sim 2.37 M_\odot$ and ellipticity $\epsilon<0.07$. Its gravitational wave (GW) radiation may be detectable with the future Einstein Telescope, but is much weaker than the current detectability limit of advanced-LIGO.
