Group Activity Recognition (GAR) remains challenging in computer vision due to the complex nature of multi-agent interactions. This paper introduces LiGAR, a LIDAR-Guided Hierarchical Transformer for Multi-Modal Group Activity Recognition. LiGAR leverages LiDAR data as a structural backbone to guide the processing of visual and textual information, enabling robust handling of occlusions and complex spatial arrangements. Our framework incorporates a Multi-Scale LIDAR Transformer, Cross-Modal Guided Attention, and an Adaptive Fusion Module to integrate multi-modal data at different semantic levels effectively. LiGAR's hierarchical architecture captures group activities at various granularities, from individual actions to scene-level dynamics. Extensive experiments on the JRDB-PAR, Volleyball, and NBA datasets demonstrate LiGAR's superior performance, achieving state-of-the-art results with improvements of up to 10.6% in F1-score on JRDB-PAR and 5.9% in Mean Per Class Accuracy on the NBA dataset. Notably, LiGAR maintains high performance even when LiDAR data is unavailable during inference, showcasing its adaptability. The proliferation of tobacco-related content on social media platforms poses significant challenges for public health monitoring and intervention. This paper introduces a novel multi-modal deep learning framework named Flow-Attention Adaptive Semantic Hierarchical Fusion (FLAASH) designed to analyze tobacco-related video content comprehensively. FLAASH addresses the complexities of integrating visual and textual information in short-form videos by leveraging a hierarchical fusion mechanism inspired by flow network theory. Our approach incorporates three key innovations, including a flow-attention mechanism that captures nuanced interactions between visual and textual modalities, an adaptive weighting scheme that balances the contribution of different hierarchical levels, and a gating mechanism that selectively emphasizes relevant features. This multi-faceted approach enables FLAASH to effectively process and analyze diverse tobacco-related content, from product showcases to usage scenarios. We evaluate FLAASH on the Multimodal Tobacco Content Analysis Dataset (MTCAD), a large-scale collection of tobacco-related videos from popular social media platforms. Our results demonstrate significant improvements over existing methods, outperforming state-of-the-art approaches in classification accuracy, F1 score, and temporal consistency. The proposed method also shows strong generalization capabilities when tested on standard video question-answering datasets, surpassing current models. Defect segmentation is crucial for quality control in advanced manufacturing, yet data scarcity poses challenges for state-of-the-art supervised deep learning. Synthetic defect data generation is a popular approach for mitigating data challenges. However, many current methods simply generate defects following a fixed set of rules, which may not directly relate to downstream task performance. This can lead to suboptimal performance and may even hinder the downstream task. To solve this problem, we leverage a novel bi-level optimization-based synthetic defect data generation framework. We use an online synthetic defect generation module grounded in the commonly-used Cut\&Paste framework, and adopt an efficient gradient-based optimization algorithm to solve the bi-level optimization problem. We achieve simultaneous training of the defect segmentation network, and learn various parameters of the data synthesis module by maximizing the validation performance of the trained defect segmentation network. Our experimental results on benchmark datasets under limited data settings show that the proposed bi-level optimization method can be used for learning the most effective locations for pasting synthetic defects thereby improving the segmentation performance by up to 18.3\% when compared to pasting defects at random locations. We also demonstrate up to 2.6\% performance gain by learning the importance weights for different augmentation-specific defect data sources when compared to giving equal importance to all the data sources.

While server-side Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate proficiency in function calling and complex reasoning, deploying Small Language Models (SLMs) directly on devices brings opportunities to improve latency and privacy but also introduces unique challenges for accuracy and memory. We introduce CAMPHOR, an innovative on-device SLM multi-agent framework designed to handle multiple user inputs and reason over personal context locally, ensuring privacy is maintained. CAMPHOR employs a hierarchical architecture where a high-order reasoning agent decomposes complex tasks and coordinates expert agents responsible for personal context retrieval, tool interaction, and dynamic plan generation. By implementing parameter sharing across agents and leveraging prompt compression, we significantly reduce model size, latency, and memory usage. To validate our approach, we present a novel dataset capturing multi-agent task trajectories centered on personalized mobile assistant use-cases. Our experiments reveal that fine-tuned SLM agents not only surpass closed-source LLMs in task completion F1 by~35\% but also eliminate the need for server-device communication, all while enhancing privacy.

In recent years, end-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems have proven themselves remarkably accurate and performant, but these systems still have a significant error rate for entity names which appear infrequently in their training data. In parallel to the rise of end-to-end ASR systems, large language models (LLMs) have proven to be a versatile tool for various natural language processing (NLP) tasks. In NLP tasks where a database of relevant knowledge is available, retrieval augmented generation (RAG) has achieved impressive results when used with LLMs. In this work, we propose a RAG-like technique for correcting speech recognition entity name errors. Our approach uses a vector database to index a set of relevant entities. At runtime, database queries are generated from possibly errorful textual ASR hypotheses, and the entities retrieved using these queries are fed, along with the ASR hypotheses, to an LLM which has been adapted to correct ASR errors. Overall, our best system achieves 33%-39% relative word error rate reductions on synthetic test sets focused on voice assistant queries of rare music entities without regressing on the STOP test set, a publicly available voice assistant test set covering many domains., Comment: Submitted to ICASSP 2025

Generating user intent from a sequence of user interface (UI) actions is a core challenge in comprehensive UI understanding. Recent advancements in multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have led to substantial progress in this area, but their demands for extensive model parameters, computing power, and high latency makes them impractical for scenarios requiring lightweight, on-device solutions with low latency or heightened privacy. Additionally, the lack of high-quality datasets has hindered the development of such lightweight models. To address these challenges, we propose UI-JEPA, a novel framework that employs masking strategies to learn abstract UI embeddings from unlabeled data through self-supervised learning, combined with an LLM decoder fine-tuned for user intent prediction. We also introduce two new UI-grounded multimodal datasets, "Intent in the Wild" (IIW) and "Intent in the Tame" (IIT), designed for few-shot and zero-shot UI understanding tasks. IIW consists of 1.7K videos across 219 intent categories, while IIT contains 914 videos across 10 categories. We establish the first baselines for these datasets, showing that representations learned using a JEPA-style objective, combined with an LLM decoder, can achieve user intent predictions that match the performance of state-of-the-art large MLLMs, but with significantly reduced annotation and deployment resources. Measured by intent similarity scores, UI-JEPA outperforms GPT-4 Turbo and Claude 3.5 Sonnet by 10.0% and 7.2% respectively, averaged across two datasets. Notably, UI-JEPA accomplishes the performance with a 50.5x reduction in computational cost and a 6.6x improvement in latency in the IIW dataset. These results underscore the effectiveness of UI-JEPA, highlighting its potential for lightweight, high-performance UI understanding.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are regularly updated to enhance performance, typically through changes in data or architecture. Within the update process, developers often prioritize improving overall performance metrics, paying less attention to maintaining compatibility with earlier model versions. Instance-level degradation (instance regression) of performance from one model version to the next can interfere with a user's mental model of the capabilities of a particular language model. Users having to adapt their mental model with every update can lead to dissatisfaction, especially when the new model has degraded compared to a prior version for a known use case (model update regression). We find that when pretrained LLM base models are updated, fine-tuned user-facing downstream task adapters experience negative flips -- previously correct instances are now predicted incorrectly. We observe model update regression between different model versions on a diverse set of tasks and models, even when the downstream task training procedures remain identical. We argue for the importance of maintaining model update compatibility during updates, and present evaluation metrics designed specifically for generative tasks, while also being applicable to discriminative tasks. We propose a training strategy to minimize the extent of instance regression in model updates, involving training of a compatibility adapter that can enhance task fine-tuned language models. We show negative flips reduce by up to 40% e.g. when updating Llama 1 to Llama 2 with our proposed method.

Identification of vessel structures of different sizes in biomedical images is crucial in the diagnosis of many neurodegenerative diseases. However, the sparsity of good-quality annotations of such images makes the task of vessel segmentation challenging. Deep learning offers an efficient way to segment vessels of different sizes by learning their high-level feature representations and the spatial continuity of such features across dimensions. Semi-supervised patch-based approaches have been effective in identifying small vessels of one to two voxels in diameter. This study focuses on improving the segmentation quality by considering the spatial correlation of the features using the Maximum Intensity Projection~(MIP) as an additional loss criterion. Two methods are proposed with the incorporation of MIPs of label segmentation on the single~(z-axis) and multiple perceivable axes of the 3D volume. The proposed MIP-based methods produce segmentations with improved vessel continuity, which is evident in visual examinations of ROIs. Patch-based training is improved by introducing an additional loss term, MIP loss, to penalise the predicted discontinuity of vessels. A training set of 14 volumes is selected from the StudyForrest dataset comprising of 18 7-Tesla 3D Time-of-Flight~(ToF) Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) images. The generalisation performance of the method is evaluated using the other unseen volumes in the dataset. It is observed that the proposed method with multi-axes MIP loss produces better quality segmentations with a median Dice of $80.245 \pm 0.129$. Also, the method with single-axis MIP loss produces segmentations with a median Dice of $79.749 \pm 0.109$. Furthermore, a visual comparison of the ROIs in the predicted segmentation reveals a significant improvement in the continuity of the vessels when MIP loss is incorporated into training.

Reinforcement Learning from AI Feedback (RLAIF) has demonstrated significant potential across various domains, including mitigating harm in LLM outputs, enhancing text summarization, and mathematical reasoning. This paper introduces an RLAIF framework for improving the code generation abilities of lightweight (<1B parameters) LLMs. We specifically focus on code generation tasks that require writing appropriate API calls, which is challenging due to the well-known issue of hallucination in LLMs. Our framework extracts AI feedback from a larger LLM (e.g., GPT-3.5) through a specialized prompting strategy and uses this data to train a reward model towards better alignment from smaller LLMs. We run our experiments on the Gorilla dataset and meticulously assess the quality of the model-generated code across various metrics, including AST, ROUGE, and Code-BLEU, and develop a pipeline to compute its executability rate accurately. Our approach significantly enhances the fine-tuned LLM baseline's performance, achieving a 4.5% improvement in executability rate. Notably, a smaller LLM model (780M parameters) trained with RLAIF surpasses a much larger fine-tuned baseline with 7B parameters, achieving a 1.0% higher code executability rate.

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly employed for complex multi-step planning tasks, where the tool retrieval (TR) step is crucial for achieving successful outcomes. Two prevalent approaches for TR are single-step retrieval, which utilizes the complete query, and sequential retrieval using task decomposition (TD), where a full query is segmented into discrete atomic subtasks. While single-step retrieval lacks the flexibility to handle "inter-tool dependency," the TD approach necessitates maintaining "subtask-tool atomicity alignment," as the toolbox can evolve dynamically. To address these limitations, we introduce the Progressive Tool retrieval to Improve Planning (ProTIP) framework. ProTIP is a lightweight, contrastive learning-based framework that implicitly performs TD without the explicit requirement of subtask labels, while simultaneously maintaining subtask-tool atomicity. On the ToolBench dataset, ProTIP outperforms the ChatGPT task decomposition-based approach by a remarkable margin, achieving a 24% improvement in Recall@K=10 for TR and a 41% enhancement in tool accuracy for plan generation., Comment: preprint version

Training large transformer models from scratch for a target task requires lots of data and is computationally demanding. The usual practice of transfer learning overcomes this challenge by initializing the model with weights of a pretrained model of the same size and specification to increase the convergence and training speed. However, what if no pretrained model of the required size is available? In this paper, we introduce a simple yet effective technique to transfer the knowledge of a pretrained model to smaller variants. Our approach called weight subcloning expedites the training of scaled-down transformers by initializing their weights from larger pretrained models. Weight subcloning involves an operation on the pretrained model to obtain the equivalent initialized scaled-down model. It consists of two key steps: first, we introduce neuron importance ranking to decrease the embedding dimension per layer in the pretrained model. Then, we remove blocks from the transformer model to match the number of layers in the scaled-down network. The result is a network ready to undergo training, which gains significant improvements in training speed compared to random initialization. For instance, we achieve 4x faster training for vision transformers in image classification and language models designed for next token prediction.

Large language models (LLMs) have the remarkable ability to solve new tasks with just a few examples, but they need access to the right tools. Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) addresses this problem by retrieving a list of relevant tools for a given task. However, RAG's tool retrieval step requires all the required information to be explicitly present in the query. This is a limitation, as semantic search, the widely adopted tool retrieval method, can fail when the query is incomplete or lacks context. To address this limitation, we propose Context Tuning for RAG, which employs a smart context retrieval system to fetch relevant information that improves both tool retrieval and plan generation. Our lightweight context retrieval model uses numerical, categorical, and habitual usage signals to retrieve and rank context items. Our empirical results demonstrate that context tuning significantly enhances semantic search, achieving a 3.5-fold and 1.5-fold improvement in Recall@K for context retrieval and tool retrieval tasks respectively, and resulting in an 11.6% increase in LLM-based planner accuracy. Additionally, we show that our proposed lightweight model using Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) with LambdaMART outperforms GPT-4 based retrieval. Vision Foundation Models (VFMs) pretrained on massive datasets exhibit impressive performance on various downstream tasks, especially with limited labeled target data. However, due to their high inference compute cost, these models cannot be deployed for many real-world applications. Motivated by this, we ask the following important question, "How can we leverage the knowledge from a large VFM to train a small task-specific model for a new target task with limited labeled training data?", and propose a simple task-oriented knowledge transfer approach as a highly effective solution to this problem. Our experimental results on five target tasks show that the proposed approach outperforms task-agnostic VFM distillation, web-scale CLIP pretraining, supervised ImageNet pretraining, and self-supervised DINO pretraining by up to 11.6%, 22.1%, 13.7%, and 29.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed approach also demonstrates up to 9x, 4x and 15x reduction in pretraining compute cost when compared to task-agnostic VFM distillation, ImageNet pretraining and DINO pretraining, respectively, while outperforming them. Contrastive pretraining of image-text foundation models, such as CLIP, demonstrated excellent zero-shot performance and improved robustness on a wide range of downstream tasks. However, these models utilize large transformer-based encoders with significant memory and latency overhead which pose challenges for deployment on mobile devices. In this work, we introduce MobileCLIP -- a new family of efficient image-text models optimized for runtime performance along with a novel and efficient training approach, namely multi-modal reinforced training. The proposed training approach leverages knowledge transfer from an image captioning model and an ensemble of strong CLIP encoders to improve the accuracy of efficient models. Our approach avoids train-time compute overhead by storing the additional knowledge in a reinforced dataset. MobileCLIP sets a new state-of-the-art latency-accuracy tradeoff for zero-shot classification and retrieval tasks on several datasets. Our MobileCLIP-S2 variant is 2.3$\times$ faster while more accurate compared to previous best CLIP model based on ViT-B/16. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of our multi-modal reinforced training by training a CLIP model based on ViT-B/16 image backbone and achieving +2.9% average performance improvement on 38 evaluation benchmarks compared to the previous best. Moreover, we show that the proposed approach achieves 10$\times$-1000$\times$ improved learning efficiency when compared with non-reinforced CLIP training. Group Activity Scene Graph (GASG) generation is a challenging task in computer vision, aiming to anticipate and describe relationships between subjects and objects in video sequences. Traditional Video Scene Graph Generation (VidSGG) methods focus on retrospective analysis, limiting their predictive capabilities. To enrich the scene understanding capabilities, we introduced a GASG dataset extending the JRDB dataset with nuanced annotations involving \textit{Appearance, Interaction, Position, Relationship, and Situation} attributes. This work also introduces an innovative approach, \textbf{H}ierarchical \textbf{Att}ention-\textbf{Flow} (HAtt-Flow) Mechanism, rooted in flow network theory to enhance GASG performance. Flow-Attention incorporates flow conservation principles, fostering competition for sources and allocation for sinks, effectively preventing the generation of trivial attention. Our proposed approach offers a unique perspective on attention mechanisms, where conventional "values" and "keys" are transformed into sources and sinks, respectively, creating a novel framework for attention-based models. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our Hatt-Flow model and the superiority of our proposed Flow-Attention mechanism. Group Activity Recognition (GAR) is a fundamental problem in computer vision, with diverse applications in sports video analysis, video surveillance, and social scene understanding. Unlike conventional action recognition, GAR aims to classify the actions of a group of individuals as a whole, requiring a deep understanding of their interactions and spatiotemporal relationships. To address the challenges in GAR, we present REACT (\textbf{R}ecognize \textbf{E}very \textbf{Act}ion Everywhere All At Once), a novel architecture inspired by the transformer encoder-decoder model explicitly designed to model complex contextual relationships within videos, including multi-modality and spatio-temporal features. Our architecture features a cutting-edge Vision-Language Encoder block for integrated temporal, spatial, and multi-modal interaction modeling. This component efficiently encodes spatiotemporal interactions, even with sparsely sampled frames, and recovers essential local information. Our Action Decoder Block refines the joint understanding of text and video data, allowing us to precisely retrieve bounding boxes, enhancing the link between semantics and visual reality. At the core, our Actor Fusion Block orchestrates a fusion of actor-specific data and textual features, striking a balance between specificity and context. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art GAR approaches in extensive experiments, demonstrating superior accuracy in recognizing and understanding group activities. Our architecture's potential extends to diverse real-world applications, offering empirical evidence of its performance gains. Advancements in clinical treatment are increasingly constrained by the limitations of supervised learning techniques, which depend heavily on large volumes of annotated data. The annotation process is not only costly but also demands substantial time from clinical specialists. Addressing this issue, we introduce the S4MI (Self-Supervision and Semi-Supervision for Medical Imaging) pipeline, a novel approach that leverages advancements in self-supervised and semi-supervised learning. These techniques engage in auxiliary tasks that do not require labeling, thus simplifying the scaling of machine supervision compared to fully-supervised methods. Our study benchmarks these techniques on three distinct medical imaging datasets to evaluate their effectiveness in classification and segmentation tasks. Notably, we observed that self supervised learning significantly surpassed the performance of supervised methods in the classification of all evaluated datasets. Remarkably, the semi-supervised approach demonstrated superior outcomes in segmentation, outperforming fully-supervised methods while using 50% fewer labels across all datasets. Keeping large foundation models up to date on latest data is inherently expensive. To avoid the prohibitive costs of constantly retraining, it is imperative to continually train these models. This problem is exacerbated by the lack of any large scale continual learning benchmarks or baselines. We introduce the first set of web-scale Time-Continual (TiC) benchmarks for training vision-language models: TiC-DataComp, TiC-YFCC, and TiC-Redcaps. TiC-DataComp, our largest dataset, contains over 12.7B timestamped image-text pairs spanning 9 years (2014-2022). We first use our benchmarks to curate various dynamic evaluations to measure temporal robustness of existing models. We show OpenAI's CLIP (trained on data up to 2020) loses $\approx 8\%$ zero-shot accuracy on our curated retrieval task from 2021-2022 compared with more recently trained models in OpenCLIP repository. We then study how to efficiently train models on time-continuous data. We demonstrate that a simple rehearsal-based approach that continues training from the last checkpoint and replays old data reduces compute by $2.5\times$ when compared to the standard practice of retraining from scratch. The landscape of publicly available vision foundation models (VFMs), such as CLIP and Segment Anything Model (SAM), is expanding rapidly. VFMs are endowed with distinct capabilities stemming from their pre-training objectives. For instance, CLIP excels in semantic understanding, while SAM specializes in spatial understanding for segmentation. In this work, we introduce a simple recipe to efficiently merge VFMs into a unified model that absorbs their expertise. Our method integrates techniques of multi-task learning, continual learning, and distillation. Further, it demands significantly less computational cost compared to traditional multi-task training from scratch, and it only needs a small fraction of the pre-training datasets that were initially used to train individual models. By applying our method to SAM and CLIP, we obtain SAM-CLIP: a unified model that combines the capabilities of SAM and CLIP into a single vision transformer. Compared with deploying SAM and CLIP independently, our merged model, SAM-CLIP, reduces storage and compute costs for inference, making it well-suited for edge device applications. We show that SAM-CLIP not only retains the foundational strengths of SAM and CLIP, but also introduces synergistic functionalities, notably in zero-shot semantic segmentation, where SAM-CLIP establishes new state-of-the-art results on 5 benchmarks. It outperforms previous models that are specifically designed for this task by a large margin, including +6.8% and +5.9% mean IoU improvement on Pascal-VOC and COCO-Stuff datasets, respectively.

Contrastive language image pretraining (CLIP) is a standard method for training vision-language models. While CLIP is scalable, promptable, and robust to distribution shifts on image classification tasks, it lacks object localization capabilities. This paper studies the following question: Can we augment CLIP training with task-specific vision models from model zoos to improve its visual representations? Towards this end, we leverage open-source task-specific vision models to generate pseudo-labels for an uncurated and noisy image-text dataset. Subsequently, we train CLIP models on these pseudo-labels in addition to the contrastive training on image and text pairs. This simple setup shows substantial improvements of up to 16.3% across different vision tasks, including segmentation, detection, depth estimation, and surface normal estimation. Importantly, these enhancements are achieved without compromising CLIP's existing capabilities, including its proficiency in promptable zero-shot classification.

While Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems are widely used in many real-world applications, they often do not generalize well to new domains and need to be finetuned on data from these domains. However, target-domain data usually are not readily available in many scenarios. In this paper, we propose a new strategy for adapting ASR models to new target domains without any text or speech from those domains. To accomplish this, we propose a novel data synthesis pipeline that uses a Large Language Model (LLM) to generate a target domain text corpus, and a state-of-the-art controllable speech synthesis model to generate the corresponding speech. We propose a simple yet effective in-context instruction finetuning strategy to increase the effectiveness of LLM in generating text corpora for new domains. Experiments on the SLURP dataset show that the proposed method achieves an average relative word error rate improvement of $28\%$ on unseen target domains without any performance drop in source domains.

Large machine learning models trained on diverse data have recently seen unprecedented success. Federated learning enables training on private data that may otherwise be inaccessible, such as domain-specific datasets decentralized across many clients. However, federated learning can be difficult to scale to large models when clients have limited resources. This challenge often results in a trade-off between model size and access to diverse data. To mitigate this issue and facilitate training of large models on edge devices, we introduce a simple yet effective strategy, Federated Layer-wise Learning, to simultaneously reduce per-client memory, computation, and communication costs. Clients train just a single layer each round, reducing resource costs considerably with minimal performance degradation. We also introduce Federated Depth Dropout, a complementary technique that randomly drops frozen layers during training, to further reduce resource usage. Coupling these two techniques enables us to effectively train significantly larger models on edge devices. Specifically, we reduce training memory usage by 5x or more in federated self-supervised representation learning and demonstrate that performance in downstream tasks is comparable to conventional federated self-supervised learning.

The task of medical image segmentation presents unique challenges, necessitating both localized and holistic semantic understanding to accurately delineate areas of interest, such as critical tissues or aberrant features. This complexity is heightened in medical image segmentation due to the high degree of inter-class similarities, intra-class variations, and possible image obfuscation. The segmentation task further diversifies when considering the study of histopathology slides for autoimmune diseases like dermatomyositis. The analysis of cell inflammation and interaction in these cases has been less studied due to constraints in data acquisition pipelines. Despite the progressive strides in medical science, we lack a comprehensive collection of autoimmune diseases. As autoimmune diseases globally escalate in prevalence and exhibit associations with COVID-19, their study becomes increasingly essential. While there is existing research that integrates artificial intelligence in the analysis of various autoimmune diseases, the exploration of dermatomyositis remains relatively underrepresented. In this paper, we present a deep-learning approach tailored for Medical image segmentation. Our proposed method outperforms the current state-of-the-art techniques by an average of 12.26% for U-Net and 12.04% for U-Net++ across the ResNet family of encoders on the dermatomyositis dataset. Purpose: In this work, we present a workflow to construct generic and robust generative image priors from magnitude-only images. The priors can then be used for regularization in reconstruction to improve image quality. Methods: The workflow begins with the preparation of training datasets from magnitude-only MR images. This dataset is then augmented with phase information and used to train generative priors of complex images. Finally, trained priors are evaluated using both linear and nonlinear reconstruction for compressed sensing parallel imaging with various undersampling schemes. Results: The results of our experiments demonstrate that priors trained on complex images outperform priors trained only on magnitude images. Additionally, a prior trained on a larger dataset exhibits higher robustness. Finally, we show that the generative priors are superior to L1 -wavelet regularization for compressed sensing parallel imaging with high undersampling. Conclusion: These findings stress the importance of incorporating phase information and leveraging large datasets to raise the performance and reliability of the generative priors for MRI reconstruction. Phase augmentation makes it possible to use existing image databases for training.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. While colonoscopy is an effective screening technique, navigating an endoscope through the colon to detect polyps is challenging. A 3D map of the observed surfaces could enhance the identification of unscreened colon tissue and serve as a training platform. However, reconstructing the colon from video footage remains difficult. Learning-based approaches hold promise as robust alternatives, but necessitate extensive datasets. Establishing a benchmark dataset, the 2022 EndoVis sub-challenge SimCol3D aimed to facilitate data-driven depth and pose prediction during colonoscopy. The challenge was hosted as part of MICCAI 2022 in Singapore. Six teams from around the world and representatives from academia and industry participated in the three sub-challenges: synthetic depth prediction, synthetic pose prediction, and real pose prediction. This paper describes the challenge, the submitted methods, and their results. We show that depth prediction from synthetic colonoscopy images is robustly solvable, while pose estimation remains an open research question.

Machine learning model weights and activations are represented in full-precision during training. This leads to performance degradation in runtime when deployed on neural network accelerator (NNA) chips, which leverage highly parallelized fixed-point arithmetic to improve runtime memory and latency. In this work, we replicate the NNA operators during the training phase, accounting for the degradation due to low-precision inference on the NNA in back-propagation. Our proposed method efficiently emulates NNA operations, thus foregoing the need to transfer quantization error-prone data to the Central Processing Unit (CPU), ultimately reducing the user perceived latency (UPL). We apply our approach to Recurrent Neural Network-Transducer (RNN-T), an attractive architecture for on-device streaming speech recognition tasks. We train and evaluate models on 270K hours of English data and show a 5-7% improvement in engine latency while saving up to 10% relative degradation in WER., Comment: Accepted to SLT 2022

This paper introduces a novel approach to Social Group Activity Recognition (SoGAR) using Self-supervised Transformers network that can effectively utilize unlabeled video data. To extract spatio-temporal information, we created local and global views with varying frame rates. Our self-supervised objective ensures that features extracted from contrasting views of the same video were consistent across spatio-temporal domains. Our proposed approach is efficient in using transformer-based encoders to alleviate the weakly supervised setting of group activity recognition. By leveraging the benefits of transformer models, our approach can model long-term relationships along spatio-temporal dimensions. We consider marginally trapped surfaces in a spherically symmetric spacetime evolving due to the presence of a perfect fluid in D-dimensions and look at the various definitions of the surface gravity for these marginally trapped surfaces. We show that using Einstein equations it is possible to simplify and obtain general formulae for the surface gravity in terms of invariant quantities defined at these marginally trapped surfaces like area radius, cosmological constant and principal values of the energy-momentum tensor \r{ho}, p. In this paper, we propose a new, simple, and effective Self-supervised Spatio-temporal Transformers (SPARTAN) approach to Group Activity Recognition (GAR) using unlabeled video data. Given a video, we create local and global Spatio-temporal views with varying spatial patch sizes and frame rates. The proposed self-supervised objective aims to match the features of these contrasting views representing the same video to be consistent with the variations in spatiotemporal domains. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed mechanism is one of the first works to alleviate the weakly supervised setting of GAR using the encoders in video transformers. Furthermore, using the advantage of transformer models, our proposed approach supports long-term relationship modeling along spatio-temporal dimensions. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) - such as Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant, to name a few - play an increasingly important role to access information and complete tasks spanning multiple domains, and by diverse groups of users. A text-to-speech (TTS) module allows PDAs to interact in a natural, human-like manner, and play a vital role when the interaction involves people with visual impairments or other disabilities. To cater to the needs of a diverse set of users, inclusive TTS is important to recognize and pronounce correctly text in different languages and dialects. Despite great progress in speech synthesis, the pronunciation accuracy of named entities in a multi-lingual setting still has a large room for improvement. Existing approaches to correct named entity (NE) mispronunciations, like retraining Grapheme-to-Phoneme (G2P) models, or maintaining a TTS pronunciation dictionary, require expensive annotation of the ground truth pronunciation, which is also time consuming. In this work, we present a highly-precise, PDA-compatible pronunciation learning framework for the task of TTS mispronunciation detection and correction. In addition, we also propose a novel mispronunciation detection model called DTW-SiameseNet, which employs metric learning with a Siamese architecture for Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) with triplet loss. We demonstrate that a locale-agnostic, privacy-preserving solution to the problem of TTS mispronunciation detection is feasible. We evaluate our approach on a real-world dataset, and a corpus of NE pronunciations of an anonymized audio dataset of person names recorded by participants from 10 different locales. Formalizing surgical activities as triplets of the used instruments, actions performed, and target anatomies is becoming a gold standard approach for surgical activity modeling. The benefit is that this formalization helps to obtain a more detailed understanding of tool-tissue interaction which can be used to develop better Artificial Intelligence assistance for image-guided surgery. Earlier efforts and the CholecTriplet challenge introduced in 2021 have put together techniques aimed at recognizing these triplets from surgical footage. Estimating also the spatial locations of the triplets would offer a more precise intraoperative context-aware decision support for computer-assisted intervention. This paper presents the CholecTriplet2022 challenge, which extends surgical action triplet modeling from recognition to detection. It includes weakly-supervised bounding box localization of every visible surgical instrument (or tool), as the key actors, and the modeling of each tool-activity in the form of triplet. The paper describes a baseline method and 10 new deep learning algorithms presented at the challenge to solve the task. Dual encoding models that encode a pair of inputs are widely used for representation learning. Many approaches train dual encoding models by maximizing agreement between pairs of encodings on centralized training data. However, in many scenarios, datasets are inherently decentralized across many clients (user devices or organizations) due to privacy concerns, motivating federated learning. In this work, we focus on federated training of dual encoding models on decentralized data composed of many small, non-IID (independent and identically distributed) client datasets. We show that existing approaches that work well in centralized settings perform poorly when naively adapted to this setting using federated averaging. We observe that, we can simulate large-batch loss computation on individual clients for loss functions that are based on encoding statistics. Based on this insight, we propose a novel federated training approach, Distributed Cross Correlation Optimization (DCCO), which trains dual encoding models using encoding statistics aggregated across clients, without sharing individual data samples. We present a novel sub-8-bit quantization-aware training (S8BQAT) scheme for 8-bit neural network accelerators. Our method is inspired from Lloyd-Max compression theory with practical adaptations for a feasible computational overhead during training. With the quantization centroids derived from a 32-bit baseline, we augment training loss with a Multi-Regional Absolute Cosine (MRACos) regularizer that aggregates weights towards their nearest centroid, effectively acting as a pseudo compressor. Additionally, a periodically invoked hard compressor is introduced to improve the convergence rate by emulating runtime model weight quantization. We apply S8BQAT on speech recognition tasks using Recurrent Neural NetworkTransducer (RNN-T) architecture. With S8BQAT, we are able to increase the model parameter size to reduce the word error rate by 4-16% relatively, while still improving latency by 5%., Comment: Accepted for publication in INTERSPEECH 2022

Unsupervised domain adaptation is one of the challenging problems in computer vision. This paper presents a novel approach to unsupervised domain adaptations based on the optimal transport-based distance. Our approach allows aligning target and source domains without the requirement of meaningful metrics across domains. In addition, the proposal can associate the correct mapping between source and target domains and guarantee a constraint of topology between source and target domains. The proposed method is evaluated on different datasets in various problems, i.e. (i) digit recognition on MNIST, MNIST-M, USPS datasets, (ii) Object recognition on Amazon, Webcam, DSLR, and VisDA datasets, (iii) Insect Recognition on the IP102 dataset. The experimental results show that our proposed method consistently improves performance accuracy. Open Arms is a novel open-source platform of realistic human-like robotic hands and arms hardware with 28 Degree-of-Freedom (DoF), designed to extend the capabilities and accessibility of humanoid robotic grasping and manipulation. The Open Arms framework includes an open SDK and development environment, simulation tools, and application development tools to build and operate Open Arms. This paper describes these hands controls, sensing, mechanisms, aesthetic design, and manufacturing and their real-world applications with a teleoperated nursing robot. From 2015 to 2022, the authors have designed and established the manufacturing of Open Arms as a low-cost, high functionality robotic arms hardware and software framework to serve both humanoid robot applications and the urgent demand for low-cost prosthetics, as part of the Hanson Robotics Sophia Robot platform. Using the techniques of consumer product manufacturing, we set out to define modular, low-cost techniques for approximating the dexterity and sensitivity of human hands. To demonstrate the dexterity and control of our hands, we present a Generative Grasping Residual CNN (GGR-CNN) model that can generate robust antipodal grasps from input images of various objects in real-time speeds (22ms). Context-aware decision support in the operating room can foster surgical safety and efficiency by leveraging real-time feedback from surgical workflow analysis. Most existing works recognize surgical activities at a coarse-grained level, such as phases, steps or events, leaving out fine-grained interaction details about the surgical activity; yet those are needed for more helpful AI assistance in the operating room. Recognizing surgical actions as triplets of combination delivers comprehensive details about the activities taking place in surgical videos. This paper presents CholecTriplet2021: an endoscopic vision challenge organized at MICCAI 2021 for the recognition of surgical action triplets in laparoscopic videos. The challenge granted private access to the large-scale CholecT50 dataset, which is annotated with action triplet information. In this paper, we present the challenge setup and assessment of the state-of-the-art deep learning methods proposed by the participants during the challenge. A total of 4 baseline methods from the challenge organizers and 19 new deep learning algorithms by competing teams are presented to recognize surgical action triplets directly from surgical videos, achieving mean average precision (mAP) ranging from 4.2% to 38.1%. This study also analyzes the significance of the results obtained by the presented approaches, performs a thorough methodological comparison between them, in-depth result analysis, and proposes a novel ensemble method for enhanced recognition. Our analysis shows that surgical workflow analysis is not yet solved, and also highlights interesting directions for future research on fine-grained surgical activity recognition which is of utmost importance for the development of AI in surgery., Comment: CholecTriplet2021 challenge report.
