Understanding bubble behaviour under ultrasound excitation is key for applications like industrial cleaning and biomedical treatments. Our previous work demonstrated that ultrasound-induced shape instabilities in microbubbles generate periodic jets capable of puncturing cells and enabling targeted drug delivery (Cattaneo et al., 2024). This study investigates the physics of these instabilities in a controlled setup involving individual micrometric air bubbles on rigid substrates. Using a dual-view imaging system combining visible light and phase-contrast x-ray radiation, we capture high-speed, high-resolution recordings on bubble shape dynamics. Four distinct response regimes are identified: spherical oscillations, harmonic meniscus waves, half-harmonic axisymmetric shape mode, and mixed shape mode. The half-harmonic modes arise from Faraday instability, with pressure thresholds aligning well with classical interface stability theory adapted for rigid substrates. Simulations using a 3D boundary element method closely match experimental observations, validating this approach for predicting bubble dynamics. The shape mode spectrum shows degeneracy and a continuous range of mode degrees, consistent with our theoretical predictions. Shape modes achieve higher amplitudes than volumetric modes, making them more effective at converting acoustic energy into kinetic energy. These modes generate substrate-directed jets when a lobe folds inward with sufficient acceleration. This process recurs with each cycle of the shape mode and has the potential to damage the substrate. These jets represent a new class of bubble jets, distinct from classical single inertial jets that form under high-pressure gradients during bubble collapse, as they are cyclic, driven by an interfacial instability, and occur at much lower acoustic intensities.

X-ray multi-projection imaging (XMPI) provides rotation-free 3D movies of optically opaque samples. The absence of rotation enables superior imaging speed and preserves fragile sample dynamics by avoiding the shear forces introduced by conventional rotary tomography. Here, we present our XMPI observations at the ID19 beamline (ESRF, France) of 3D dynamics in melted aluminum with 1000 frames per second and 8 $\mu$m resolution per projection using the full dynamical range of our detectors. Since XMPI is a method under development, we also provide different tests for the instrumentation of up to 3000 frames per second. Ultrafast radiographic imaging and tracking (U-RadIT) use state-of-the-art ionizing particle and light sources to experimentally study sub-nanosecond dynamic processes in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, materials science and other fields. These processes, fundamental to nuclear fusion energy, advanced manufacturing, green transportation and others, often involve one mole or more atoms, and thus are challenging to compute by using the first principles of quantum physics or other forward models. One of the central problems in U-RadIT is to optimize information yield through, e.g. high-luminosity X-ray and particle sources, efficient imaging and tracking detectors, novel methods to collect data, and large-bandwidth online and offline data processing, regulated by the underlying physics, statistics, and computing power. We review and highlight recent progress in: a.) Detectors; b.) U-RadIT modalities; c.) Data and algorithms; and d.) Applications. Hardware-centric approaches to U-RadIT optimization are constrained by detector material properties, low signal-to-noise ratio, high cost and long development cycles of critical hardware components such as ASICs. Interpretation of experimental data, including comparisons with forward models, is frequently hindered by sparse measurements, model and measurement uncertainties, and noise. Alternatively, U-RadIT make increasing use of data science and machine learning algorithms, including experimental implementations of compressed sensing. X-ray Fluorescence Ghost Imaging (XRF-GI) was recently demonstrated for x-ray lab sources. It has the potential to reduce acquisition time and deposited dose by choosing their trade-off with spatial resolution, while alleviating the focusing constraints of the probing beam. Here, we demonstrate the realization of synchrotron-based XRF-GI: We present both an adapted experimental setup and its corresponding required computational technique to process the data. This extends the above-mentioned potential advantages of GI to synchrotron XRF imaging. Ever since the very first human-made knapped tools, the control of fracture propagation in brittle materials has been a vector of technological development. Nowadays, a broad range of applications relies on crack propagation control, from the mitigation of damages, e.g., from impacts in glass screens or windshields, to industrial processes harnessing fracture to achieve clean cuts over large distances. Yet, studying the fracture in real time is a challenging task, since cracks can propagate up to a few km/s in materials that are often opaque. Here, we report on the in situ investigation of cracks propagating at up to 2.5 km/s along a (001) plane of a silicon single crystal, using X-ray diffraction megahertz imaging with intense and time-structured synchrotron radiation. The studied system is based on the Smart Cut process, where a buried layer in a material (typically Si) is weakened by micro-cracks and then used to drive a macroscopic crack (0.1 m) in a plane parallel to the surface with minimal deviation (1 nm). The results we report here provide the first direct confirmation that the shape of the crack front is not affected by the distribution of the micro-cracks, which had been a postulate for previous studies based on post-fracture results. We further measured instantaneous crack velocities over the centimeter-wide field-of-view, which had only been previously inferred from sparse point measurements, and evidence the effect of local heating by the X-ray beam. Finally, we also observed the post-crack movements of the separated wafer parts, which can be explained using pneumatics and elasticity. Thus, this study provides a comprehensive view of controlled fracture propagation in a crystalline material, paving the way for the in situ measurement of ultra-fast strain field propagation., Comment: 4 figures

Spatial light modulation is important for many scientific and industrial applications. The spatial light modulator and optical data projector both rely on precisely configurable optical elements to shape a light beam. Here we explore an image-projection approach which does not require a configurable beam-shaping element. We term this approach ghost projection on account of its conceptual relation to computational ghost imaging. Instead of a configurable beam shaping element, the method transversely displaces a single illuminated mask, such as a spatially-random screen, to create specified distributions of radiant exposure. The method has potential applicability to image projection employing a variety of radiation and matter wave fields, such as hard x rays, neutrons, muons, atomic beams and molecular beams. Building on our previous theoretical and computational studies, we here seek to understand the effects, sensitivity, and tolerance of some key experimental limitations of the method. Focusing on the case of hard x rays, we employ experimentally acquired masks to numerically study the deleterious effects of photon shot noise, inaccuracies in random-mask exposure time, and inaccuracies in mask positioning, as well as adapting to spatially non-uniform illumination. A simple coherent-imaging method due to Paganin et al. is widely employed for phase-amplitude reconstruction of samples using a single paraxial x-ray propagation-based phase-contrast image. The method assumes that the sample-to-detector distance is sufficiently small for the associated Fresnel number to be large compared to unity. The algorithm is particularly effective when employed in a tomographic setting, using a single propagation-based phase-contrast image for each projection. Here we develop a simple extension of the method, which improves the reconstructed contrast of very fine sample features. This provides first-principles motivation for boosting fine spatial detail associated with high Fourier frequencies, relative to the original method, and was inspired by several recent works employing empirically-obtained Fourier filters to a similar end.

The three-dimensional structures of the primary Al3Sc particles in an Al-2Sc master alloy were studied by synchrotron X-ray microtomography, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The Al3Sc phases were found to be a single cube and a cluster of cubes. The surface area, equivalent diameter of the Al3Sc cubes increased with the increasing of cube volume, but the specific surface area decreases. The primary Al3Sc cubes and Al-matrix have the same crystal orientation, indicating that the Al3Sc phases are the heterogeneous nucleation sites for Al. We demonstrate X-ray phase contrast microscopy performed at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser sampled at 1.128 MHz rate. We have applied this method to image stochastic processes induced by an optical laser incident on water-filled capillaries with micrometer scale spatial resolution. The generated high speed water jet, cavitation formation and annihilation in water and glass, as well as glass explosions are observed. The comparison between XFEL and previous synchrotron MHz microscopy shows the superior contrast and spatial resolution at the XFEL over the synchrotron. This work opens up new possibilities for the characterization of dynamic stochastic systems on nanosecond to microsecond time scales at megahertz rate with object velocities up to few kilometers per second using X-ray Free-Electron Laser sources., Comment: First MHz-rate microscopy at European XFEL

Imaging with hard x-rays is an invaluable tool in medicine, biology, materials science, and cultural heritage. Propagation-based x-ray phase-contrast imaging and tomography have been mostly used to resolve micrometer-scale structures inside weakly absorbing objects as well as inside dense specimens. Indirect x-ray detection has been the key technology to achieve up to sub-micrometer spatial resolutions, albeit inefficiently and hence at the expense of increased radiation dose to the specimen. A promising approach to low-dose imaging and high spatial resolution even at high x-ray energies is ghost imaging, which could use single-pixel, yet efficient direct x-ray detectors made of high-density materials. However, phase contrast has not yet been realised with x-ray ghost imaging. We present an approach which exploits both the advantages of x-ray ghost imaging and the high sensitivity of phase-contrast imaging. In comparison with existing techniques, our method is efficient and achieves high-fidelity x-ray ghost images with phase contrast, accurate density resolution and dramatically higher spatial resolution. The method is scalable to practical tomography with large fields of view, micrometer spatial resolution, and with high-energy x-rays above 100 keV. It is also applicable to other phase-sensitive imaging techniques and with other probes such as neutrons, alpha rays, and muons, for which high spatial resolution detectors are limited or even not available.

Ghost tomography using single-pixel detection extends the emerging field of ghost imaging to three dimensions, with the use of penetrating radiation. In this work, a series of spatially random x-ray intensity patterns is used to illuminate a specimen in various tomographic angular orientations with only the total transmitted intensity being recorded by a single-pixel camera (or bucket detector). The set of zero-dimensional intensity readings, combined with knowledge of the corresponding two-dimensional illuminating patterns and specimen orientations, is sufficient for three-dimensional reconstruction of the specimen. The experimental demonstration of ghost tomography is presented here using synchrotron hard x-rays. This result expands the scope of ghost imaging to encompass volumetric imaging (i.e., tomography), of optically opaque objects using penetrating radiation. For hard x-rays, ghost tomography has the potential to decouple image quality from dose rate as well as image resolution from detector performance.

We present a practical experimental realization of transmission x-ray ghost imaging using synchrotron light. Hard x-rays from an undulator were split by a Si 200 crystal in Laue geometry to produce two copies of a speckled incident beam. Both speckle beams were simultaneously measured on a CCD camera. The sample was inserted in one of the two beams, and the corresponding image was integrated over the camera extent to synthesize a bucket signal. We show the successful x-ray ghost image reconstruction of two samples and discuss different reconstruction strategies. We also demonstrate a method for measuring the point spread function of a ghost imaging system, which can be used to quantify the resolution of the ghost imaging reconstructions and quantitatively compare different reconstruction approaches. We report an experimental proof of principle for ghost imaging in the hard x-ray energy range. We used a synchrotron x-ray beam that was split using a thin crystal in Laue diffraction geometry. With an ultra-fast imaging camera, we were able to image x-rays generated by isolated electron bunches. At this time scale, the shot noise of the synchrotron emission process is measurable as speckles, leading to speckle correlation between the two beams. The integrated transmitted intensity from a sample located in the first beam was correlated with the spatially resolved intensity measured on the second, empty, beam to retrieve the shadow of the sample. The demonstration of ghost imaging with hard x-rays may open the way to protocols to reduce radiation damage in medical imaging and in non-destructive structural characterization using Free Electron Lasers.
