With the development of China's economic level and improving people's living standards, the state's supervision of food health and safety has increased. Consumer demand for many people has gradually changed from being satiated to eating well, and high-quality, environmentally friendly, and healthy aquatic products have become increasingly popular with consumers. However, intensive and high-density aquaculture causes the deterioration of water environmental conditions, the increase of anti-nutrient factors and nutritional imbalance caused by the replacement of animal protein with plant protein in feed, and changes in the growth, immunity, and digestive ability of aquatic animals caused by changes in feed nutrients, traditional processing methods, and transportation stress. The above situations encountered in aquaculture have a common impact on aquatic animals and inevitably cause a reduction in the muscle quality of aquatic animals. Therefore, improving the muscle quality of aquatic animals and the quality of aquatic products is an urgent problem with significant research value and potential.To improve aquatic quality, first, it is necessary to first identify the indicators of muscle quality in aquatic animals to improve aquatic quality. However, there is still a lack of a systematic muscle quality evaluation index system in the current aquaculture research. Therefore, this study reviewed the evaluation indices of muscle quality, including meat content, muscle nutrient composition, muscle fiber structure, muscle texture characteristics, and muscle physicochemical indices, to provide a reference for establishing scientific muscle quality evaluation indices. In addition, factors affecting muscle quality must be considered in studies aimed at improving the muscle quality of aquatic animals. Only by understanding the factors affecting muscle quality in aquatic animals can the key factors regulating muscle quality and their mechanisms be studied more comprehensively and scientifically. This study reviewed the factors affecting the muscle quality of aquatic animals, including feed nutrients, feed additives, and the culturing environment, and found that nutrients are key factors in improving the muscle quality of aquatic animals.Protein is an important nutrient, the main component of muscle, and an important indicator of muscle quality. Amino acids are the basic units of proteins and have a vital impact on muscle quality and flavor. Therefore, it is important to study the effects and mechanisms of action of amino acids on muscle quality in aquatic animals. Therefore, the effects of dietary amino acids on the muscle quality of aquatic animals were reviewed in this study, including the effects of amino acids on muscle nutrients, flavor, texture indices, and physical and chemical properties of aquatic animals. Furthermore, the effects of amino acids on muscle quality, including the promotion of protein synthesis, regulation of fat deposition, enhancement of antioxidant activity, and maintenance of intestinal health, were reviewed.In summary, this study summarized the influence of amino acids on the muscle quality of aquatic animals and its mechanism from the aspects of muscle quality evaluation indices, factors affecting meat quality, and the influence of amino acids on muscle quality, providing a reference for further research on the regulation of muscle quality by amino acids and the improvement of feed nutrients on the meat quality of aquatic animals.

Currently, most of the ultra-high-dimensional feature screening methods for categorical data are based on the correlation between covariates and response variables, using some statistics as the screening index to screen important covariates. Thus, with the increasing number of data types and model availability limitations, there may be a potential problem with the existence of a class of unimportant covariates that are also highly correlated with the response variable due to their high correlation with the other covariates. To address this issue, in this paper, we establish a model-free feature screening procedure for binary categorical response variables from the perspective of the contribution of features to classification. The idea is to introduce the Jensen-Shannon divergence to measure the difference between the conditional probability distributions of the covariates when the response variables take on different values. The larger the value of the Jensen-Shannon divergence, the stronger the covariate's contribution to the classification of the response variable, and the more important the covariate is. We propose two kinds of model-free ultra-high-dimensional feature screening methods for binary response data. Meanwhile, the methods are suitable for continuous or categorical covariates. When the numbers of covariate categories are the same, the feature screening is based on traditional Jensen-Shannon divergence. When the numbers of covariate categories are different, the Jensen-Shannon divergence is adjusted using the logarithmic factor of the number of categories. We theoretically prove that the proposed methods have sure screening and ranking consistency properties, and through simulations and real data analysis, we demonstrate that, in feature screening, the approaches proposed in this paper have the advantages of effectiveness, stability, and less computing time compared with an existing method.

Abstract Background Despite the relationship between Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and depressive symptoms, which has been well researched in general populations, little is known about homosexual and bisexual populations, especially lesbian and bisexual women in China. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of ACEs and depressive symptoms and to analyze the relationship between them among lesbian and bisexual women in China. Methods The eligible participants were aged 16 years or older who report their sexual orientation as homosexual or bisexual. The data was collected through anonymous questionnaires with the help of Lespark in Beijing from July 18 to December 29, 2018, and all participants had informed consent to this study. Univariate analysis and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to explore the relationship between ACEs and depressive symptoms among lesbian and bisexual women. All statistical analyses were conducted by the software of SPSS 22.0. Results Among 301 lesbian and bisexual women, 81.4% were lesbian, 18.4% were bisexual women, and the majority were 21–30 years. As for ACEs, 51.5% reported at least one ACE, in which emotional neglect (22.6%) and emotional abuse (22.3%) were common ACEs. As for depressive symptoms of lesbian and bisexual women, the detection rate was 56.1%. The multiple linear regression analyses showed that abuse (β = 2.95, 95%CI:1.07–4.83) and neglect (β = 3.21, 95%CI:1.09–5.31) were positively associated with depressive symptoms and lesbian and bisexual women with three (β = 4.11, 95%CI: 0.99–7.22) or more (β = 6.02, 95%CI: 3.23–8.78) ACEs suffered from more depressive symptoms than others. Conclusion Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and depressive symptoms were at high prevalence among lesbian and bisexual women in China. ACEs were associated with depressive symptoms, especially childhood abuse and neglect experiences that have a significant effect on lesbian and bisexual women mental health.

In the present work, inexpensive and commercially available diethyltriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) was used as an initiator to catalyze the N-formylation reaction of CO2 with amines via the construction of C-N bonds in the presence of xanthone as the photosensitizer and PhSiH3 as the reducing agent. After a systematic study of various factors, the optimal conditions for the photocatalytic reaction were obtained: 2.5 mmol of amine, 2.5 mmol of PhSiH3, 10 mol% of DTPA, 20 mol% of xanthone, 1 mL of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), atmospheric pressure, and 35 W UV lamp irradiation for 48 h. Under the optimal conditions, the catalyst system afforded high performance for the N-formylation of amines (primary and secondary amines) and CO2, and the yields of the N-formylated products of dialkylamines were above 70%. Further studies exhibit that the catalytic system has a wide scope of substrate applications. For various alicyclic secondary amines, heterocyclic secondary amines, aliphatic primary amines, and aromatic primary amines, the corresponding N-formylation products can be obtained efficiently. In addition, the catalyst can be recycled by simple precipitation and filtration. After five cycles of recycling, there was no significant change in the catalytic and structural properties of DTPA. Finally, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed.

The reduction of CO2 is an important method to produce chemicals such as methanol, formic acid, formaldehyde, etc. In general, the reduction of CO2 is carried out at high temperatures and pressures with precious metals as catalysts, which is not favorable for industrial procedures. Thus, it will be very useful if researchers can find cost-effective catalysts for industrial application in CO2 reduction. In this work, commercially available ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was tested as a cheap, non-toxic, and recyclable catalyst to initiate the N-carbonylation reaction of CO2 with amines. After screening various reaction parameters, including temperature, pressure, time, solvent, and reducing agent, the optimal reaction conditions were obtained: 80 °C, 2 MPa, 6 h, 50 mmol% catalyst dosage, 1 mL DMSO, and 1:1 molar ratio of amine to reducing agent. Notably, further studies confirmed that EDTA could also be effective for N-formylation even under ambient conditions (0.1 MPa and room temperature). The suitability of the catalyst for 26 kinds of substrates (including aliphatic amines, aromatic amines, and alicyclic amines) and its reusability were also investigated, with satisfactory results. Scale-up research has been performed effectively with a high conversion of amine (83%) to obtain the mono-formylated product selectively. Finally, the mechanism of the reaction between amine and CO2 has been proposed via control experiments and compared with results in the literature.

A suitable feed size has a positive effect on animal feeding. For aquatic larvae, the correct feed size is very important for their growth. This experiment analyzed and compared the effect of different particle sizes of feed for larval stages on the growth performance, whole body composition, and muscle amino acid and fatty acid composition of crayfish. Five larval crayfish diets of different particle sizes, namely < 0.40 mm (Group A, control group), 0.40–0.50 mm (Group B), 0.71–0.85 mm (Group C), 0.90–1.00 mm (Group D) and 1.5 mm (Group E), were fed to 2000 crayfish (initial weight 0.0786 ± 0.0031 g) for 100 d. The results showed that as the particle size increased, final weight, weight gain (WG, p = 0.001) and specific growth rate (SGR, p = 0.000) of the crayfish tended to increase and then leveled off, with the control group being the lowest. The feed conversion ratio (FCR, p = 0.000) showed a decreasing and then equalizing trend with increasing particle size, but there was no significant difference between the groups except the control group. Broken-line regression analysis showed that the critical values for the appropriate particle feed size for crayfish larvae were 0.55 mm and 0.537 mm using SGR and FCR as indicators. Groups B, C and D had the highest crude protein content and were significantly higher than the control group (p = 0.001). Group E had the highest umami amino acid (UAA) and was significantly higher than the control group (p = 0.026). The content of isoleucine (Ile, p = 0.038) and phenylalanine (Phe, p = 0.038) was highest in group C and significantly higher than in the control group. Through principal component analysis, groups C and D were shown to contain leucine (Leu), glutamic (Glu), methionine (Met), valine (Val), histidine (His), Phe, and Ile levels significantly induced. The content of linoleic acid (C18:2n6, p = 0.000), linolenic acid (C18:3n3, p = 0.000), saturated fatty acid (SFA, p = 0.000), monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA, p = 0.001), polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA, p = 0.000) and n-6 PUFA (p = 0.000) in group C was the highest and significantly higher than the control group. Principal component analysis showed that group C significantly induced the levels of C18:2n6, C18:3n3, DHA, EPA, n-3 PUFA and n-6 PUFA in muscle. Therefore, our results suggest that appropriate feed particle size can improve the growth performance and nutrient composition of crayfish. Based on the broken-line regression analysis of SGR and FCR, the critical values of optimal particle size for crayfish are 0.55 mm and 0.537 mm, and when the particle size exceeds these critical values (not more than 1.5 mm commercial feed), growth performance and FCR of the crayfish are no longer changed. Nevertheless, group C has high protein and low lipid content, as well as better nutrition with amino acids and fatty acids. Overall, combined with growth performance and nutrient composition, it is recommended that the particle size of the diet at the larval stage for crayfish is between 0.71 and 0.85 mm.

Abstract Background Despite that several original researchers have investigated the association between neck circumference (NC) and the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), their results remain controversial. This review aimed to quantitatively determine the risk of DM in relation to the NC. Methods We conducted a literature search of PubMed, Embase, and the Web of Science from these databases’ inception through September 2022 to identify observational studies that examined the association between NC and the risk of DM. A meta-analysis of the random-effects model was applied to combine the results of the enrolled studies. Results Sixteen observational studies involving 4,764 patients with DM and 26,159 participants were assessed. The pooled results revealed that NC was significantly associated with the risk of type 2 DM (T2DM) (OR = 2.17; 95% CI: 1.30–3.62) and gestational DM (GDM) (OR = 1.31; 95% CI: 1.17–1.48). Subgroup analysis revealed that after controlling for BMI, the relationship between the NC and T2DM remained statistically significant (OR = 1.94; 95% CI: 1.35–2.79). Moreover, the pooled OR of T2DM was found to be 1.16 (95% CI: 1.07–1.27) for an increment per each centimeter in the NC. Conclusions Integrated epidemiological evidence supports the hypothesis that a greater NC is associated with an increased risk of T2DM and GDM.

Objectives: To examine the association of changes in plant-based diet consumption with all-cause mortality among older adults in China. Design: Cohort study. Setting: This cohort study of 11 years used data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a long-term, nationwide survey covering 23 provinces in China. Participants: A total of 7843 older participants aged ≥60 years were included in this study. Measurements: Changes in plant-based diets consumption (2008–2011) were assessed by 3 graded plant-based diet indices, including an overall plant-based diet index (PDI), a healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and an unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI). The main outcome was all-cause mortality. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional-hazards models were fitted to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of mortality for changes in PDI, hPDI, and uPDI. Results: A total of 7843 participants (mean [SD] age, 82.2 [10.9] years; 3588 [45.7%] men) were included in this study. During a median (IQR) of 9 (5–10) years of follow-up, 3749 deaths were documented. Compared with older adults whose plant-based diet indices were relatively stable, older adults with the greatest decrease (quintile 1) in PDI, hPDI, and uPDI had respectively 32% (95% CI, 19%–47%) higher, 21% (95% CI, 9%–33%) higher, and 10% (95% CI, 4%–21%) lower risk of death. Compared with older adults whose diet indices were relatively stable, older adults with the greatest increase (quintile 5) in uPDI had a 13% higher risk of death (95% CI, 1%–21%), while no significant associations of the increased PDI and hPDI with all-cause mortality were observed. Conclusion: Maintaining the consumption of overall and healthful plant-based diets, and decreasing the consumption of an unhealthful plant-based diet can be beneficial in preventing or delaying premature death among Chinese older adults.

The imbalance of follicular helper T (Tfh) cell subset is closely related to the occurrence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ginsenoside Rg1 (G-Rg1), the main component of ginseng, has excellent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. Here, mice colitis was induced by dextran sulfate sodium and treated with G-Rg1 (200 mg/kg/day) for 14 days. Results showed that G-Rg1 can significantly alleviate symptoms of colitis in mice, regulate the balance of Tfh cell subsets, promote the secretion of IL-4 and IL-10, and inhibit the expression of IFN-γ, IL-17A, and IL-21. Molecular docking analysis revealed that G-Rg1 has excellent binding activity with target genes of the TLR/MyD88 signaling pathway, and and can reduce the expression levels of proteins such as TLR2, MyD88, IRAK4, TRAF6, and TAK1. These findings suggest that G-Rg1 can effectively regulate the balance of Tfh cell subsets, and its potential mechanism is related to the inhibition of the TLR/MyD88 signaling pathway.

Background: Clinical trials for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have been conducted extensively. However, the effect of participation in clinical trials on survival outcomes remains unclear. This study aimed to assess whether participation in clinical trials was an independent prognostic factor for survival in patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods: We analyzed the medical records of patients aged ≥18 years who were newly diagnosed with stage IIIB or IV NSCLC and received chemotherapy or immunotherapy from September 2016 to June 2020 in this retrospective cohort study. To reduce the impact of confounding factors, propensity score matching (PSM) was performed. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used to calculate and compare the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of the patients. Finally, Cox proportional hazards regression was employed to examine the correlation between clinical trial participation and survival outcomes. Results: The study enrolled 155 patients in total, of which 62 (40.0 %) patients participated in NSCLC clinical trials. PSM identified 50 pairs of patients in total. The median PFS and OS of clinical trial participants and non-participants were 17.2 vs. 13.9 months (p = 0.554) and 32.4 vs. 36.5 months (p = 0.968), respectively. According to the results of multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, clinical trial participation was not an independent prognostic factor for advanced NSCLC patients (HR: 0.89, 95 % CI: 0.50–1.61; p = 0.701). Conclusions: The clinical trial participants with advanced NSCLC displayed similar survival outcomes compared with the non-participating patients in this cohort.

Abstract Introduction Complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS-1) is prevalent after trauma, with intractable pain being the most prominent clinical symptom. The impact of sympathetic block on CRPS is unclear. The goal of this study was to explore the characteristics that predict successful symptom relief with lumbar sympathetic block (LSB) in patients with lower extremity CRPS-1. Methods The study was designed as a prospective cohort study. Ninety-eight patients diagnosed with lower extremity CRPS-1 between March 2021 and March 2022 were enrolled as participants. All of the patients received two LSB treatments within a month. Sympthetic skin response (SSR) and numeric rating scale (NRS) were recorded before and after LSB treatment. The procedure was judged as a clinically positive response if the patients a 50% or greater reduction in NRS scores. Patients were divided into positive response and negative response groups after LSB treatment: LSB (+) and LSB (−), and the different characteristics and examination findings of the two groups of patients were compared. Furthermore, a multivariable logistic regression model was utilized to evaluate the predictors of successful symptom relief following LSB treatment. Results A total of 43.9% (43/98) of patients experienced successful symptom relief, while 56.1% (55/98) had unsuccessful symptom relief. In order to study the muscle quality of different crustaceans, we aim to provide a comprehensive assessment of their muscle quality characteristics as a theoretical reference. In this work, seven major species of farmed and consumer crustaceans were selected, including crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei), black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon), kuruma prawns (Penaeus japonicus), river prawns (Macrobranchium nipponense), and Chinese shrimp (Penaeus chinensis). Their morphometric parameters, nutritional composition, textural properties, and physical and chemical indexes were comparatively analyzed. The results showed that the meat content (MC, about 14.78%) of crayfish was significantly lower than that of the other six species. By contrast, pacific white shrimp had the highest MC, although the MCs of black tiger shrimp, kuruma prawns, and Chinese shrimp are greater than 40%. All seven crustacean species were high in protein and low in fat, while pacific white shrimp had the highest crude protein, crude lipid, and crude ash content compared to the other crustaceans. The content of threonine (Thr) was the highest in crayfish. The content of methionine (Met) and lysine (Lys) was the highest in freshwater prawns. The content of isoleucine (Ile), leucine (Leu), and non–essential amino acid (NEAA) was the highest in pacific white shrimp. C18:2n-6 (linoleic acid, LA) was the highest in freshwater prawns and pacific white shrimp; C18:3n-3 (linolenic acid, LNA), C20:4n-6 (arachidonic acid, AA), unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were all the highest in crayfish; and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was the highest in freshwater prawns, but the content was not significantly different from crayfish, pacific white shrimp, black tiger shrimp, and Chinese shrimp. Pacific white shrimp had the highest values for hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness. The redness values of crayfish, black tiger shrimp, and Chinese shrimp were significantly higher than those of the other three species except kuruma prawns. Compared to other crustaceans, river prawns had the highest drip loss and cooking loss. Black tiger shrimp and Chinese shrimp had the lowest cooking loss rates. The research shows that the tail muscle of the seven species of crustaceans is rich in protein, essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids and low in fat, representing a high-quality protein. Among these crustaceans, the main essential amino acids and essential fatty acids in the tail muscle of pacific white shrimp, freshwater prawns, and crayfish are higher in content and better in nutritional value.

The remarkable efficacy of cancer immunotherapy has been established in several tumor types. Of the various immunotherapies, PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors are most extensively used in the treatment of many cancers in clinics. These inhibitors restore the suppressed antitumor immune response and inhibit tumor progression by blocking the PD-1/PD-L1 signaling. However, the low response rate is a major limitation in the clinical application of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors. Therefore, combination strategies that enhance the response rate are the need of the hour. In this investigation, PT-100 (also referred to as Talabostat, Val-boroPro, and BXCL701), an orally administered and nonselective dipeptidyl peptidase inhibitor, not only augmented the effectiveness of anti-PD-1 therapy but also significantly improved T immune cell infiltration and reversed the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. The combination of PT-100 and anti-PD-1 antibody increased the number of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Moreover, the mRNA expression of T cell-associated molecules was elevated in the tumor microenvironment. The results further suggested that PT-100 dramatically reduced the ratio of tumor-associated macrophages. These findings provide a promising combination strategy for immunotherapy in lung cancer.

Abstract Background Qigong have a positive impact on the rehabilitation of motor function in stroke survivors, but there is no consensus on the effectiveness of Qigong on activities of daily living (ADL), neurological function, and life quality for patients with stroke. We aimed to quantitatively evaluate the effect of Qigong on non‐motor function and life quality in stroke patients. Methods Electronic literature searches were performed for randomized controlled trials on this topic using PubMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure through August 2022. The primary outcome measures were the Barthel Index, neurological deficit score (NDS), and Stroke‐Specific Quality of Life Scale (SSQLS). A random‐effects model was used to calculate the pooled mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). RevMan 5.4 software was used for meta‐analysis. Results A total of 16 eligible randomized controlled trials with 1253 stroke patients were included. As indicated by the Barthel Index, Qigong was associated with the improvement in daily living activities of stroke patients (MD: 10.72, 95% CI: 5.88∼15.57). It was also found that Qigong was helpful in improving life quality (SSQLS, MD: 14.41, 95% CI: 5.56∼23.25) and reducing NDSs among them (NDS, MD: −4.56, 95% CI: −6.99∼−2.14). After sensitivity analysis, the effect of Qigong on these functions and life quality did not change significantly. By subgroup analysis of intervention duration, we found that long‐term intervention (MD: 11.83, 95% CI: 2.80∼20.86) had a better effect on the improvement of daily living activities than short‐term intervention (MD: 10.07, 95% CI: 6.15∼14.00) (pfor subgroup differences = .001). Conclusions Pooled results suggested that Qigong had beneficial effects on ADL, neurological function, and life quality in stroke patients, which may provide an option for their rehabilitation.

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) is an important indicator of the capacity of terrestrial ecosystems to absorb carbon. For the purpose of developing adaptation and mitigation strategies, it is essential to investigate the effect of climatic changes and anthropogenic activities on NEP. This study analyzed the spatiotemporal properties of NEP in the Yangtze River and Yellow River Source Region (SRYY) using remote sensing images, climate variable data, and land use data. Then it was examined at how climatic change affected carbon sinks and sources and how changes in land use affected carbon storage. According to the results, the SRYY contributed a carbon sink worth 35.26 Tg C annually from 2001 to 2019 (1 Tg = 1012 g). Influenced by climate, soil and vegetation, NEP displayed regional differences in space. The spatial distribution of NEP gradually increased from Northwest to Southeast. In recent twenty years, the NEP of SRYY slightly increased with a rate of 3.24 Tg C per decade. The NEP with an increasing trend accounted for 78.9% of the whole study area, which were widely distributed and especially significant in the west, such as Tuotuo River Basin. The correlation analysis between NEP and climate variables suggested that temperature was the dominant control of NEP in the SRYY. About 54.4% of the NEP variance across the entire SRYY was contributed by temperature. However, there was no significant linear relationship between NEP and annual precipitation. In recent two decades, built-up land expansion and ecological degradation reduced carbon sink by 28.61 Gg C (1 Gg = 109 g) and 1.94 Tg C, respectively. Grassland degradation caused by rodent infestation and grazing was the main factor of carbon sink reduction in some areas. The restoration of vegetation and wetland areas resulted in a 0.75 Tg C increase in the carbon sink. It might be benefited from warmer climate condition and ecological protection measures.

BackgroundIndoor air pollution has been reported to have adverse effects on the eye; however, the health effects of exposure to cooking with solid fuels on visual impairment remain unclear in China. ObjectiveWe aimed to examine the association between cooking with solid fuels and visual impairment, including distance visual impairment (DVI) and near visual impairment (NVI). MethodsData were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, a nationwide survey of adults aged over 45 years who were enrolled in 2011 (Wave 1) and followed up in Wave 2 (2013), Wave 3 (2015), and Wave 4 (2018). We used Cox proportional hazards models to determine the association between solid fuels use and visual impairment. Additionally, the impact of switching cooking fuel types on vision function were examined through wave-specific data analysis (Wave 1 and Wave 4). Interaction and subgroup analyses were performed to explore the potential effect modifiers. Data were collected using the stratified multistage random sampling method and further analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and R 4.2.1 statistical software packages. ResultsA total of 9559 middle-aged and older Chinese adults without visual impairment at baseline were included in the study, with 51.2% (n=4914) of the participants reporting that they cooked with solid fuels. During the follow-up period, 2644 (27.5%) and 3130 (32.6%) participants developed DVI and NVI, respectively. Compared with the clean fuel users, participants who cooked with solid fuels had a higher risk of DVI (hazards ratio [HR] 1.38, 95% CI 1.28-1.50) and NVI (HR 1.18, 95% CI 1.10-1.27). In addition, switching the cooking fuel type from clean to solid fuels was associated with an elevated risk of DVI (HR 1.51, 95% CI 1.15-1.98) and NVI (HR 1.39, 95% CI 1.06-1.82) compared to persistently using clean fuels during the follow-up period, although no protective effect of switching from solid to clean fuels on NVI was found (P=.52). In subgroup analysis, we found that cooking with solid fuels increased the risk of DVI in participants younger than 65 years (HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.28-1.55), men (HR 1.45, 95% CI 1.28-1.65), urban residents (HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.08-1.75), and smokers (HR 1.43, 95% CI 1.25-1.64). By contrast, negative effects of cooking with solid fuels on NVI were found in nonsmokers (HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.11-1.33) and urban residents (HR 1.20, 95% CI 1.10-1.37). ConclusionsCooking with solid fuels was associated with an increased risk of visual impairment among middle-aged and older Chinese adults. These findings indicate that promoting the utilization of clean fuels is conducive to reducing the burden of visual impairment for the public.

Aquatic products are popular among consumers for their delicious taste, unique flavor and high nutritional value. Because of high endogenous enzyme activity and large number of microorganisms, aquatic products are prone to spoilage. Freezing is an effective method to extend the shelf life and reduce the regional and seasonal differences of aquatic products. Under freezing conditions, the growth and reproduction of microorganisms and the rate of biochemical reactions in muscle tissue are inhibited, but the quality deterioration is still a cumulative and irreversible process, so effective measures must be taken to improve the quality of frozen aquatic products. It is generally accepted that the quality attributes of frozen aquatic products are mainly determined by the morphology and distribution of ice crystals and protein denaturation. Recent studies have shown that the oxidation of biomacromolecules in muscle, mainly lipid and protein oxidation, is also an important factor affecting the quality of aquatic products, which has become one of the research focuses in the field of food chemistry. Therefore, the oxidation mechanism of lipid and protein and its influence on the quality of frozen aquatic products are overviewed in this article, and the latest research progress in the quality control of frozen aquatic products is also summarized from the perspective of oxidation, in order to provide a theoretical reference for improving the quality of frozen aquatic products.

Glycidol is a well-known food contaminant mainly formed in refined edible oils and various thermally processed foods. Here, we studied the toxicity effects and related mechanism of glycidol on Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Glycidol was found to induce Gap period 2 (G2)/Mitosis (M) phase cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and autophagy in HUVECs. Inhibition of autophagy by 3-methyladenine (3-MA) attenuated glycidol-induced cell death, suggesting that glycidol-induced apoptosis was autophagy-dependent. Moreover, glycidol treatment induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK), and p38. Inhibition of ERK, JNK, and p38 phosphorylation by the inhibitors U0126, SP600125, and SB203580 attenuated glycidol-induced autophagy and prevented glycidol-mediated reduction in cell viability, demonstrating that glycidol inhibited HUVECs growth by inducing autophagic-dependent apoptosis through activation of the ERK, JNK and p38 signaling pathways. In addition, apigenin (API) and its octoic acid diester apigenin-7 (API-C8), 4′-O-dioctanoate were found to significantly attenuate glycidol-induced cell growth inhibition by inhibiting the above signaling pathways. Collectively, glycidol induces autophagic-dependent apoptosis via activating the ERK/JNK/p38 signaling pathways in HUVECs and API-C8 could attenuate the toxicity effects.

Abstract Background Limited information is available concerning the association between dietary patterns and cognitive ability during adolescence, especially in regards to the epidemiological studies in China. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the association between dietary patterns and cognitive ability in Chinese children aged 10–15 years. Methods The dietary information, cognitive ability and sociodemographic data of 2029 children were retrieved from the 2010 China Family Panel Studies. Dietary patterns were assessed by principal component analysis. Ordinal logistic regression models were used to determine the association between dietary patterns and cognitive ability in these children. Results Three dietary patterns were identified, namely, ‘High protein’, ‘High fat’ and ‘High salt-oil’. Following adjustment for gender, age, nationality, household registration, school type, parental education level, family learning environment, annual household income and family size, we found that an increase in ‘High protein’ pattern score was significantly associated with higher mathematics test scores (OR = 1.62, CI: 1.23 ~ 2.15; P = 0.001), but not with vocabulary test scores (OR = 1.21, CI: 0.93 ~ 1.58; P = 0.149). On the contrary, an increase in ‘High fat’ pattern score was significantly associated with lower scores of mathematics (OR = 0.76, CI: 0.59 ~ 0.98; P = 0.031) and vocabulary (OR = 0.77, CI: 0.61 ~ 0.97; P = 0.029) tests. However, there was no significant association between ‘High salt-oil’ pattern and the scores of mathematics (OR = 0.99, CI: 0.77 ~ 1.27; P = 0.915) and vocabulary (OR = 0.93, CI: 0.73 ~ 1.18; P = 0.544) tests. Conclusion The findings of this study demonstrated that ‘High protein’ pattern was positively associated with cognitive ability in Chinese children, while ‘High fat’ pattern exhibited a negative association.

Abstract Background Animal bites are a major public health problem. The more serious the bite wound is, the higher the risk of developing rabies is. This study aimed to investigate the severity of wounds among animal bite victims and identify the influencing factors in Wuhan, China. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1015 animal bite victims visiting rabies prevention clinics. We performed a face-to-face interview to collect information on the exposure category of the bite wound, the type of the offending animal, exposure-to-risk situations, etc. Factors associated with exposure categories were identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results Five hundred and sixty-four (55.57%) cases were category III exposures, 418 (41.18%) were category II exposures, and 33 (3.25%) were category I exposures. People who were hurt by their own domestic animals (odds ratio [OR] = 1.55, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14–2.10), and those exposed to animals unvaccinated against rabies (OR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.08–1.95) had a higher risk for category III exposures. Respondents who did not know the fatality of rabies were more likely to be injured seriously compared to those who knew that rabies is fatal, and the OR was 1.40 (95% CI, 1.05–1.86). Conclusions This study showed that factors associated with the severity of bite wounds mainly included types of the offending animal, vaccination status of the animal, and knowledge of rabies fatality. Educational programs and awareness-raising campaigns should be provided to decrease severe animal bites, especially targeting pet owners and those with limited rabies knowledge.

Abstract Hypertension is the leading single contributor to all-cause death and disability worldwide. However, there is scarce evidence on the prevalence and risk factors of hypertension for Chinese youth. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hypertension among Chinese college freshmen and to identify the influencing factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study of all freshmen from 2015 to 2017 at a university in Wuhan, China by physical examination and standard-structured questionnaire. The Pearson chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables. Forward stepwise logistic regression method was used in the multivariate analysis to identify independent predictors of hypertension in youth. A total of 12,849 participants were included, and the prevalence of hypertension of Chinese college freshmen was 4.3% (7.9% in men and 1.6% in women). The effect of acrolein on the formation of the 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) was investigated in a chemical model. Acrolein was found to increase PhIP formation at each tested addition level. 0–0.2 mmol of acrolein increased PhIP formation dose-dependently, while high levels of acrolein (>0.2 mmol) did not further increase PhIP formation. Mechanistic study showed that acrolein addition decreased the residue of phenylalanine and creatinine, but increased the content of some key intermediates. Further analysis indicated that acrolein can react with phenylalanine, creatinine, and PhIP to form adducts. These results suggested that acrolein was able to contribute to PhIP formation as a consequence of its comprehensive ability to facilitate Strecker degradation of phenylalanine and react with phenylalanine, creatinine, and PhIP. In addition, oxidation of the tilapia fish increased the PhIP formation in the roasted fish patties, further supporting the potential contribution role of lipid oxidation products to the formation of PhIP.

CO2, as a cheap and abundant renewable C1 resource, can be used to synthesize high value-added chemicals. In this paper, a series of bifunctional metallic niobium complexes were synthesized and their structures were characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. All of these complexes have been proved to be efficient catalysts for the coupling reaction of CO2 and epoxides to obtain cyclic carbonates under solvent- and co-catalyst-free conditions. By using CO2 and propylene oxide as a model reaction, the optimal reaction conditions were systematically screened as: 100 °C, 1 MPa, 2 h, ratio of catalyst to alkylene oxide 1:100. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the bifunctional niobium catalysts can efficiently catalyze the coupling reaction with high yield and excellent selectivity (maximum yield of >99% at high pressure and 96.8% at atmospheric pressure). Moreover, this series of catalysts can also catalyze the coupling reaction at atmospheric pressure and most of them showed high conversion of epoxide. The catalysts have good substrate suitability and are also applicable to a variety of epoxides including diepoxides and good catalytic performances were achieved for producing the corresponding cyclic carbonates in most cases. Furthermore, the catalysts can be easily recovered by simple filtration and reused for at least five times without obvious loss of catalytic activity and selectivity. Kinetic studies were carried out preliminarily for the bifunctional niobium complexes with different halogen ions (3a(Cl−), 3b(Br−), 3c(I−)) and the formation activation energies (Ea) of cyclic carbonates were obtained. The order of apparent activation energy Ea is 3a (96.2 kJ/mol) > 3b (68.2 kJ/mol) > 3c (37.4 kJ/mol). Finally, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed.

The Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis), found only in a small region in southeastern Anhui Province, is listed as critically endangered (CR) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to its current declining population trend. Any abnormalities in the physical properties of an egg can decrease the hatching rate. In particular, eggshells play an essential role in embryo development, motivating us to analyze the microstructures of the eggshells of Chinese alligators. In this study, we categorized the eggshells into two groups, based on the hatching rates, and analyzed the relationship between the eggshell parameters (eggshell thickness, calcium content, and number of pores in erosion craters) and the hatching rate, as well as the relationships between the eggshell parameters. We found that the shells of the eggs with high hatching rates were thicker than those of the eggs with low hatching rates. There were also fewer erosion-crater pores on the surfaces of the eggs with high hatching rates than on the surfaces of the eggs with low hatching rates. Moreover, the shell Ca content was significantly higher in the eggs with high hatching rates than in the eggs with low hatching rates. Cluster modeling indicated that the highest hatching rate occurred when the eggshell thickness was 200–380 µm and there were 1–12 pores. These results suggest that eggs with adequate Ca contents, thicker shells, and less air permeability are more likely to hatch. Furthermore, our findings can inform future studies, which will be vital for the survival of the critically endangered Chinese alligator species.

Objective: Sufferers of tinnitus, especially of the prolonged type, frequently suffer from comorbid depression and anxiety. From the perspective of the network model, this comorbidity is thought to be an interacting system of these two symptoms. In our study, we conducted a network analysis of depression and anxiety comorbidity in tinnitus sufferers, aiming to identify the central and bridge symptoms and make informed suggestions for clinical interventions and psychotherapy. Method: A total of 566 tinnitus sufferers were enrolled in our study. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Questionnaire (GAD-7) were selected to evaluate depression and anxiety symptoms, respectively, followed by network analysis to construct the interacting networks. Results: The findings identified six edges of strongest regularized partial correlations in this network. Of these, three were depression symptoms and three were anxiety symptoms. The anxiety symptoms “Unable to control worry” and “Relaxation difficulty” and the depression symptom “Feeling depressed or hopeless” had the highest expected influence centrality. The analysis results also revealed three bridge symptoms: “Afraid something awful might happen”, “Feeling of worthlessness”, and “Trouble concentrating”. As for “Suicidal ideation”, the direct relations between this symptom and “Afraid something awful might happen” and “Feeling depressed or hopeless” were the strongest. Conclusions: The central and bridge symptoms of the interacting network of depression and anxiety symptoms in tinnitus sufferers can be considered a significant transdiagnostic intervention target for the management of this comorbidity. In particular, clinical prevention and psychotherapy should be implemented, targeting the symptoms that have the strongest associations with suicidal ideation.

The evolution of quality attributes and their association with the protein properties of lightly tilapias fillets salted with different replacement proportions of NaCl with KCl (0%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 100%) at the same ionic strength were investigated. KCl replacements using optimal substitution (50% of KCl) contributed to maintaining desired quality properties. Further, KCl replacement (about 50~70% of KCl) led to the insolubilization and weakened stability of myofibrillar proteins, represented by the unfolding of the myofibrillar protein, increased surface hydrophilic points, and strengthened internal protein-protein interaction, resulting in the structurally reinforced hardness and lower water-holding capacity. Excessive replacement (more than 70% of KCl) showed apparent deterioration in taste quality, coloration, and hardness received by sensory sensation caused by immoderate hydrolysis and aggravated oxidation of the myofibrillar protein. In this sense, insights into KCl replacements on protein properties might be a positive approach to improving quality attributes of lightly salted tilapias fillets.

ObjectivesA healthy dietary habit is essential for preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). We aimed to assess the adherence to the Chinese Food Pagoda (CFP) proposed in the Chinese Dietary Guidelines 2016 in the high-risk population of NCDs in central China.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in two large enterprises (totally 3,016 employees) from October to December 2019 in Hubei Province (central China). The high-risk population of NCDs was identified by physical examination, laboratory test and face-to-face questionnaire survey according to the National Norms for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases issued by the Chinese government. We assessed the deviation of real diet from the CFP recommended diet in the high-risk population of NCDs.ResultsA total of 821 participants aged 35–59 years old with at least one high-risk factor of NCDs were enrolled in our study. Of them, 53.8% were daily smokers, 49.6% had elevated blood cholesterol, 31.4% were centrally obese, 23.3% had high normal blood pressure, and 3.5% had impaired fasting glucose. Significant disparity was detected in the high-risk population of NCDs between real food consumption and the CFP's recommendation (P < 0.05), such as the deficient intake of nuts and milk and dairy products, and the over-consumption of cereals, meat and poultry, oil, and salt. Participants with impaired fasting glucose had the highest intake of cereals and vegetables on average. Participants with central obesity were more likely to consume meat and poultry (P < 0.05). The lowest average intake of eggs and the highest average intake of milk and dairy products were found in participants with high blood cholesterol (P < 0.05). The daily smokers were more likely to consume beans and nuts (P < 0.05). The lowest average intake of fruits and the highest average intake of tubers were found in participants with high normal blood pressure (P < 0.05).ConclusionAdherence to CFP in the high-risk population of NCDs appeared to be challenging. It is necessary to adopt dietary education campaign focusing on the high-risk population of NCDs to prevent or delay the occurrence of NCDs.

BackgroundYoung men who have sex with men (YMSM) are at high risk of HIV infection that accounts for an increasing proportion of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in China. However, little is known about the trajectories of sexual risk behaviors in this population. The study aimed to investigate longitudinal patterns of sexual risk behaviors among YMSM in China.MethodsStudy data were collected from a prospective cohort study among 460 YMSM from 2017 to 2020. Based on the predicted HIV infection risk scores, distinct sexual risk behaviors trajectories of YMSM were estimated and plotted using the group-based censored normal model to identify the predictors of trajectories change over time.ResultsThree sexual risk behaviors trajectories were identified: a decreasing low-risk group (7.6%), an intermediate-risk group (67.4%), and an ascending high-risk group (25.0%).Compared to the decreasing low-risk group, intermediate-risk group membership was associated with being from rural areas, current smoker and higher depressive symptoms; ascending high-risk group membership was associated with an education level of high school or lower, being from rural areas, younger age at sex debut with a man, current smoker, higher depressive symptoms and sexual minority stress.ConclusionsSexual risk behaviors among YMSM changed over time within different trajectories. Identifying YMSM belonging to high-risk trajectories before HIV infection is vital for the intervention and may reduce HIV transmission.

Background and Purpose Patients with aortic disease might have an increased risk of intracranial aneurysm (IA). We conducted this research to assess the prevalence of IA in patients with aortopathy, considering the impact of gender, age, and cardiovascular risk factors. Methods We searched PubMed and Scopus from inception to August 2019 for epidemiological studies reporting the prevalence of IA in patients with aortopathy. Random-effect meta-analyses were performed to calculate the overall prevalence, and the effect of risk factors on the prevalence was also evaluated. Anatomical location of IAs in patients suffered from distinct aortic disease was extracted and further analyzed. Results Thirteen cross-sectional studies involving 4,041 participants were included in this systematic review. We reported an estimated prevalence of 12% (95% confidence interval [CI], 9% to 14%) of IA in patients with aortopathy. The pooled prevalence of IA in patients with bicuspid aortic valve, coarctation of the aorta, aortic aneurysm, and aortic dissection was 8% (95% CI, 6% to 10%), 10% (95% CI, 7% to 14%), 12% (95% CI, 9% to 15%), and 23% (95% CI, 12% to 34%), respectively. Gender (female) and smoking are risk factors related to an increased risk of IA. The anatomical distribution of IAs was heterogeneously between participants with different aortic disease. Conclusions According to current epidemiological evidence, the prevalence of IA in patients with aortic disease is quadrupled compared to that in the general population, which suggests that an early IA screening should be considered among patients with aortic disease for timely diagnosis and treatment of IA.

A series of bifunctional Schiff base metal catalysts (Zn-NPClR, Zn-NPXH, and M-NPClH) with two quaternary ammonium groups were prepared for carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxide coupling reactions. The effects of the reaction variables on the catalytic activity were systematically investigated, and the optimal reaction conditions (120 °C, 1 MPa CO2, 3 h) were screened. The performances of different metal-centered catalysts were evaluated, and Co-NPClH showed excellent activity. This kind of bifunctional catalyst has a wide range of substrate applicability, excellent stability, and can be reused for more than five runs. A relatively high TOF could reach up to 1416 h−1 with Zn-NPClH as catalyst by adjusting reaction factors. In addition, the kinetic study of the coupling reaction catalyzed by three catalysts (Zn, Co, and Ni) was carried out to obtain the activation energy (Ea) for the formation of cyclic carbonates. Finally, a possible mechanism for this cyclization reaction was proposed.

Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) have become a high risk population of HIV infection due to their risky sexual behaviors. The latent pattern of psychosocial characteristics plays an important effect in HIV-related risky behaviors among HIV-negative MSM. Method: Participants were recruited from Wuhan, Nanchang, and Changsha city from September 2017 to January 2018. Social support was assessed by the multidimensional scale of social support, Connor-Davidson Resilience scale-10 items for reliance, the assessment of Stigma towards Homosexuality for sexual minority stigma, the Likert subscale of nondisclosure for identity concealment, the ACE questionnaire-Kaiser-CDC for adverse childhood experience, the Centers for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for depression. Latent profile analysis (LPA) and multivariate regression were used to analyze the data. Results: Three psychosocial characteristic patterns were revealed by the LPA. “Social support and resilience group” (SR group), “Identity concealment group” (IC group) and “Adverse childhood experience” (ACE group) were identified, respectively. In comparison with “SR group”, “IC group” have a higher likelihood of one-night male partners (AOR = 2.74, 95%CI = [1.54, 4.90]), both fixed and one-night male partners (AOR = 2.01, 95%CI = [1.34, 3.01]) and HIV-unsure male partner (AOR = 2.12, 95%CI = [1.44, 3.13]). Similarly, “ACE group” were more likely having inconsistent condom use (AOR = 2.58, 95%CI = [1.41, 4.73]), and having sex with HIV-positive male partner (AOR = 4.90, 95%CI = [1.95, 12.30]) with comparison of “SR group”. In addition, we further revealed that “ACE group” had a higher ratio (90.0%) of inconsistent condom use among MSM whose male partners were HIV-positive. Conclusions: Six important psychosocial factors were divided into three latent pattern classes. Compared with “SR group”, “IC group” and “ACE group” were more likely to engage in HIV-related risky sexual behaviors. Further research may pay more attention to “IC group” and “ACE group” for targeted intervention.

Rabies is a major public health problem and the incidence of suspected rabid animal bites remains high in China. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) about rabies of bite victims in Wuhan, China. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1015 bite victims visiting rabies prevention clinics. We performed a face-to-face interview to investigate the rabies KAP of these victims using a self-designed questionnaire. Factors associated with the KAP were evaluated using logistic regression models. Only 56.85% of respondents knew that rabies is infectious. More than 20% of respondents thought that it is not necessary to vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies usually. About 70% of participants stated that they never need to be reminded to vaccinate when they were bitten. Ammonium, imidazole, or pyridinium functionalized β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) were used as efficient one-component bifunctional catalysts for the coupling reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxide without the addition of solvent and metal. The influence of different catalysts and reaction parameters on the catalytic performance were examined in detail. Under optimal conditions, Im-CD1-I catalysts functionalized with imidazole groups were able to convert various epoxides into target products with high selectivity and good conversion rates. The one-component bifunctional catalysts can also be recovered easily by filtration and reused at least for five times with only slight decrease in catalytic performance. Finally, a possible process for hydroxyl group-assisted ring-opening of epoxide and functionalized group- induced activation of CO2 was presented.

Mutations in HSPB1 are known to cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2F (CMT2F) and distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN). In this study, we presented three patients with mutation in HSPB1 who were diagnosed with dHMN. Proband 1 was a 14-year-old male with progressive bilateral lower limb weakness and walking difficulty for four years. Proband 2 was a 65-year-old male with chronic lower limb weakness and restless legs syndrome from the age of 51. Proband 3 was a 50-year-old female with progressive weakness, lower limbs atrophy from the age of 44. The nerve conduction studies (NCS) suggested axonal degeneration of the peripheral motor nerves and needle electromyography (EMG) revealed chronic neurogenic changes in probands. Open sural nerve biopsy for proband 2 and the mother of proband 1 showed mild to moderate loss of myelinated nerve fibers with some nerve fiber regeneration. A novel p.V97L in HSPB1 was identified in proband 3, the other two variants (p.P182A and p.R127W) in HSPB1 have been reported previously. The functional studies showed that expressing mutant p.V97L HSPB1 in SH-SY5Y cells displayed a decreased cell activity and increased apoptosis under stress condition. Our study expands the clinical phenotypic spectrum and etiological spectrum of HSPB1 mutation.

Cancer has the highest mortality in humans worldwide, and the development of effective drugs remains a key issue. Traditional Chinese medicine Saussurea involucrata (SI) exhibits a series of effects, such as anti-cancer, but the action mechanisms are still unclear. Here, systems pharmacology was applied to reveal its anti-cancer mechanism. First, we screened the active compounds of SI. Then, the compound–target network, target–disease network, and target–pathway network were constructed. DAVID was applied for GOBP analysis and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis on cancer-related targets. Seven potential compounds and 187 targets were identified. The target–disease classification network showed that compounds mainly regulated proteins related to cancer, nervous system diseases, and cardiovascular system diseases. Also, SI anti-tumor effect mainly associated with the regulation of NO production, angiogenesis, MAPK, and PKB from GOBP enrichment. Additionally, KEGG pathway enrichment indicated that targets involved in anti-inflammatory action, inhibiting angiogenesis and anti-proliferation or inducing apoptosis. Experimental validation showed that four active compounds could inhibit cell proliferation and promote apoptosis in A549 (except for kaempferol), PC-3, and C6 cells. This study not only provides experimental evidence for further research on SI in cancer treatment but also promotes the development of potential drugs of SI in modern medicine.

This study was conducted to investigate the potential of cryogenic freezing with liquid nitrogen in the shelf-life extension of northern snakehead (Channa argus) and clarify the effects of temperature fluctuations after freezing on the quality attributes and tissue microstructure during frozen storage. The fish fillets were frozen by three methods including freezing using an ultra-low-temperature freezer (−80°C) to the core temperature of −60°C (T1) or −18°C (T2), or liquid nitrogen (T3) followed by storage at −20°C for five months. Cryogenic freezing with liquid nitrogen postponed the decrease in pH and protein extractability. Temperature fluctuations after freezing might promote the accretion of ice crystals and resulted in the loss of tissue integrity and disorganization of myofibrils. The microstructural changes contributed greatly to the increased thawing loss and decreased resilience, as indicated by the enlarged extracellular spacing and the flakiness of myofibrils. Cryogenic freezing with liquid nitrogen showed no superiority in maintaining the microstructure of northern snakehead fillets, which was supposedly attributed to the cracking in tissue during freezing and the accretion of ice crystals during frozen storage.

The interaction of protionamide with alizarin red S (ARS) and its analytical application were carefully investigated in this contribution. The interaction conditions were carefully studied and optimized by cyclic voltammetry. Under the optimum conditions, the cyclic voltammetry curve of ARS showed an oxidation peak with the peak potential of 0.57 V. After the addition of protionamide to the ARS solution, the peak potential was negatively moved, and meanwhile the oxidation peak current decreased apparently to the concentration of protionamide and then a new method for the protionamide determination was established. The linear equation between the decreasing current (Δip) and protionamide concentration was got as Δip (μA) = 0.01514C (mg/L) −0.01553 (n=9; r=0.991) with the linear range of 10.0~50.0 mg/L, and the detection limit (3σ) was got as 8.25 μg/mL. The effects of coexisting substances on the determination were carefully investigated and the protionamide artificial and tablet samples were detected with satisfactory results.
