Abstract Background Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections can cause a significant disease burden. It is estimated that 1.5 billion people worldwide are infected with STHs, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. This study aimed to assess the distribution of the global burden and trend of STH infections from 1990 to 2021. Methods We retrieved data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 on the age-standardized rates (ASRs) of prevalence and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of STH infections for all age groups in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. The ASRs of prevalence and DALYs by age, gender, and socio-demographic index (SDI) were calculated to quantify the spatial distribution and temporal trend. Spearman correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between ASR and SDI. Results In 2021, there were an estimated 642.72 million cases and 1.38 million DALYs caused by STH infections worldwide. The age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) of STH infections was 8429.89 [95% uncertainty interval (UI): 7697.23, 9362.18 ] per 100,000 population globally. The ASPR of STH infections varied across 21 geographic regions in 2021, being mainly prevalent in most African and Latin American locations. The prevalence was higher in the groups of 5–19 years, especially the group of 5–9 years with the ASPR of 16,263 (95% UI: 14,877.06, 18,003.49) and ASR of DALYs of 40.69 (95% UI: 25.98, 60.91) per 100,000. The ASPR of STH infections showed an obvious decreasing trend worldwide (estimated annual percent change = − 4.03, 95% confidence interval: − 4.13, − 3.93) with variations in different species infections during the study years. Abstract Background Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare condition characterized by early-onset and progressive visual impairment. Individuals with PCA have relatively early-onset and progressive dementia, posing certain needs for early detection. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the association of alterations in outer retinal and choroidal structure and microvasculature with PCA neuroimaging and clinical features and the possible effects of apolipoprotein E(APOE) ε4 allele on outer retinal and choroidal alterations in participants with PCA, to detect potential ocular biomarkers for PCA screening. Methods This cross-sectional study included PCA and age- and sex-matched healthy control participants from June 2022 to December 2023. All participants with PCA completed a comprehensive neurological evaluation. All participants were recorded baseline information and underwent an ophthalmic evaluation. Quantitative analyses were performed using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and angiography (SS-OCTA). Adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AO-SLO) was performed in some patients. In participants with PCA, the influence of APOE ε4 on outer retinal and choroidal alterations and the correlation of outer retinal and choroidal alterations with PCA neuroimaging and clinical features in participants with PCA were investigated. In order to investigate the influence of X-ray irradiation dose on the germination and storage quality of coloured potatoes, this study took the coloured potatoes Yellow Rose 3, Purple Rose 3, Red Rose 5 and common potatoes as test materials, and treated them with 5 MeV electron-beam rotary target X-rays at 0, 100, 300 and 500 Gy. The treated potatoes were stored at room temperature (20±2) ℃ with a relative humidity of 80%~90%. In order to study the influence of X-ray irradiation on the appearance, nutritional quality and fresh-keeping effects of potatoes, parameter changes of germination rate, weight loss rate, hardness, VC content, dry matter content and respiration intensity during the storage period were analyzed. The results showed that X-ray irradiation treatment reduced the respiratory intensity of potatoes in the mid to late storage period and decreased the weight loss, hardness decline and loss of VC content during storage. Compared with control group, 100 Gy irradiation treated Yellow Rose 3, Purple Rose 3, Red Rose 5 and common potatoes reduced the weight loss rate by 12.76%, 5.31%, 6.05% and 1.43%, respectively, the degree of decrease in hardness at the end of the storage period compared with the beginning of storage period was reduced by 12.98%, 6.40%, 8.34% and 7.13%, respectively, and the rate of loss of VC content was reduced by 17.71%, 22.80%, 13.52% and 14.65%, respectively. Four varieties of potatoes did not sprout even after storage for more than 240 days after receiving different doses of X-rays. A low dose of 100 Gy of X-ray irradiation treatment could achieve an optimal sprout inhibition effect. Moreover, it delayed weight loss and hardness decline more effectively than 300 and 500 Gy. This dose could be recommended as the dose for irradiation preservation of coloured and ordinary potatoes in industrial applications. This research provides a theoretical basis and technical guidance for the application of X-ray irradiation technology in the storage and preservation of coloured potatoes.

Abstract Background To discuss the current status of reproductive concerns and its correlation with fear of recurrence and level of family support in patients of childbearing age with gynecologic malignancies. Methods A convenient sampling method was used to enroll 188 patients with gynecologic malignancies in Nanjing Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University, and Haian Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine from September 2022 to April 2023. Patients were assessed using general information questionnaire, Reproductive Concerns After Cancer Scale (RCAC), Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI) questionnaire, and Perceived Social Support-Family (PSS-FA) Scale. Results Among patients of childbearing age with gynecologic malignancies, the total RCAC score was (54.35 ± 7.52), indicating a moderate level of reproductive concerns. Abstract Stress concentration surrounding wounds drives fibroblasts into a state of high mechanical tension, leading to the delay of wound healing, exacerbating pathological fibrosis, and even causing tissue dysfunction. Here, an innovative skin stress‐shielding hydrogel wound dressing is reported that makes the wound sites shrink as a response to body temperature and then remolds the stress micro‐environment of wound sites to reduce the formation of skin scars. Composed of a modified natural temperature‐sensitive polymer cross‐linked with polyacrylic acid networks, this hydrogel wound dressing has demonstrated a substantial decrease in scar area for full‐thickness wounds in rat models. The physical forces exerted by the wound dressing are instrumental in attenuating the activation and transduction of fibroblasts within the wound sites, thereby mitigating the excessive deposition of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Notably, the wound dressing significantly down‐regulates the expression of transforming growth factor‐β1(TGF‐β1) and collagen I, while concurrently exerting a dramatic inhibitory effect on the integrin‐focal adhesion kinase (FAK)/phosphorylated‐FAK (p‐FAK) signaling pathway. Collectively, the fabrication of functional hydrogels with a stress‐shielding profile is a new route for achieving scar‐less wound healing, thus offering immense potential for improving clinical outcomes and restoring tissue integrity.

ABSTRACT It remains unclear how previous infections and vaccinations influenced and shaped heterogeneous immune responses against Omicron and its variants in diverse populations in China. After the national wave of Omicron in early 2023, we evaluated serum levels of neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) against Omicron (B.1.1.529) and its variants (BA.5, BF.7, and CH1.1) in 33 COVID-19 convalescents and 40 uninfected vaccinees, using vesicular stomatitis virus-based pseudovirus neutralizing assay. In addition, we followed 34 Delta convalescent patients to compare their immune responses against Omicron before (late 2021) and after the Omicron wave (early 2023). NAbs at the acute phase of the disease were investigated in 50 Omicron inpatients, including 24 vaccinated and 26 unvaccinated patients. Among them, nasal mucosal IgA levels were measured in 42 subjects. Compared to vaccination, breakthrough infections significantly increased the breadth and magnitude of serum nAbs and mucosal IgA levels against Omicron variants. Exposure to Omicron but not Delta elicited stronger pan-Omicron responses. In Omicron inpatients, nAbs continued to rise as vaccination doses increased. However, in both vaccinees and convalescents, a fourth dose vaccination did not elicit higher nAbs against Omicron. Furthermore, nAbs against Omicron variants lasted longer than nAbs against WT SARS-CoV-2. Breakthrough infections of Omicron variants elicited specific immune responses against Omicron compared to vaccination and Delta infection. Although repeated vaccination revealed limited impacts on serum nAbs, populations at high risk of hospitalization may still benefit from continued vaccination.IMPORTANCEThe study described the specific humoral immunity against Omicron and its variants (BA.5, BF.7, and CH1.1) in diverse populations, including Delta-positive convalescent patients, Omicron-infected patients with a previous or current confirmed Delta infection, Omicron-positive patients, and healthy controls. In addition, we followed Delta convalescents for 1 year to evaluate the effect of a booster vaccine, breakthrough infection, and reinfection. Nasal mucosal IgA levels against SARS-CoV-2 were also examined. The findings of this study demonstrated the varied responses of individuals in different states following the outbreak of Omicron, highlighting the potential advantages of ongoing immunization for groups that are more vulnerable and have a greater likelihood of being hospitalized.

Summary: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a life-threatening disease induced by abnormal activation of pulmonary adventitial fibroblasts (PAFs) in the early stage. The association between selenium deficiency and PAH is not yet fully understood. In this study, we found that the serum selenium content of PAH patients was significantly lower than that of healthy volunteers in two independent cohorts. Moreover, PAH patients with lower selenium levels may present poorer prognosis. Prophylactic selenium supplementation could effectively improve hemodynamics and pulmonary vascular remodeling in monocrotaline-induced pulmonary hypertension rat models. Mechanistically, selenium supplementation restored the level of selenium binding protein 1 (SELENBP1) which could exert an antagonistic effect on PAF activation. The rescue assay further proved that selenium supplementation worked in a SELENBP1-dependent manner. These findings demonstrated that selenium deficiency is an important risk factor in PAH, and the selenium-SELENBP1 axis represents a promising target for PAH prevention.

With the prevalence of sequentially-emerged sublineages including BA.1, BA.2 and BA.5, SARS-CoV-2 Omicron infection has transformed into a regional epidemic disease. As a sublineage of BA.5, the BA.5.2.48 outbroke and evolved into multi-subvariants in China without clearly established virological characteristics. Here, we evaluated the virological characteristics of two isolates of the prevalent BA.5.2.48 subvariant, DY.2 and DY.1.1 (a subvariant of DY.1). Compared to the normal BA.5 spike, the double-mutated DY.1.1 spike demonstrates efficient cleavage, reduced fusogenicity and higher hACE2 binding affinity. BA.5.2.48 demonstrated enhanced airborne transmission capacity than BA.2 in hamsters. The pathogenicity of BA.5.2.48 is greater than BA.2, as revealed in Omicron-lethal H11-K18-hACE2 rodents. In both naïve and convalescent hamsters, DY.1.1 shows stronger fitness than DY.2 in hamster turbinates. Thus regional outbreaking of BA.5.2.48 promotes the multidirectional evolution of its subvariants, gaining either enhanced pathogenicity or a fitness in upper airways which is associated with higher transmission.

Background Relapsed/refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia (R/R ALL) continues to be a major cause of mortality in children worldwide, with around 15% of ALL patients experiencing relapse and approximately 10% eventually dying from the disease. Early identification of R/R ALL in children has posed a longstanding clinical challenge.Method Genetic analysis of survival outcomes in pediatric patients with ALL from the TARGET-ALL dataset revealed five risk score factors identified through the intersection of differential genes (relapse/non-relapse) from the GSE17703 and GSE6092 databases. A risk score equation was formulated using these factors and validated against prognostic data from 46 ALL cases at our institution. Patients from multiple datasets were stratified into high and low-score groups based on this equation. Protein–protein interaction networks (PPI) were then constructed using the intersecting differential genes from all three datasets to identify hub nodes and predict interacting transcription factors. Additionally, genes related to cell pyroptosis with varying expression across these datasets were screened, and a multifactorial ROC curve (incorporating risk score and differential expression of pyroptosis-related genes) was generated. Furthermore, relationships among variables in the predictive model were depicted using a nomogram, and model efficacy was assessed through decision curve analysis (DCA).Results By analyzing the TARGET-ALL, GSE17703, and GSE6092 databases, we developed a prognostic risk assessment model for pediatric ALL incorporating BAG2, EPHA4, FBXO9, SNX10, and WNK1. Validation of this model was conducted using data from 46 pediatric ALL cases obtained from our institution. Following the identification of 27 differentially expressed genes, we constructed a PPI and identified the top 10 hub genes (PTPRC, BTK, LCK, PRKCQ, CD3D, CD27, CD3G, BLNK, RASGRP1, VPREB1). Using this network, we predicted the top 5 transcription factors (HOXB4, MYC, SOX2, E2F1, NANOG). ROC and DCA were conducted on pyroptosis-related genes exhibiting differential expression and risk scores. Subsequently, a nomogram was generated, demonstrating the effectiveness of the risk score in predicting prognosis for pediatric ALL patients.Conclusions We have developed a risk prediction model for pediatric R/R ALL utilizing the genes BAG2, EPHA4, FBXO9, SNX10, and WNK1. This model provides a scientific foundation for early identification of R/R ALL in children.

Background The relationship between amniotic fluid inflammatory biomarkers and preterm birth in second- or third-trimester pregnancy has been a focus, and understanding the correlation between these markers and preterm birth is important for early identification and intervention in preterm birth. The aim of this study was to explore potential inflammatory biomarkers in second- or third-trimester pregnancy amniotic fluid associated with preterm birth.Methods On November 30, 2023, we searched literature involved the influence of second- or third-trimester pregnancy amniotic fluid inflammatory biomarkers on preterm birth through PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scope, CNKI, WanFang, VIP and China Biomedical Databases. The search languages were Chinese and English. Included outcomes indexes were combined utility analysis via R software.Results A total of 11 articles were included in the combined utility analysis. Recently, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1), which carries the clade 2.3.4.4b hemagglutinin (HA) gene and has been prevalent among North American bird populations since the winter of 2021, was reported in dairy cows in the United States. As of 24 May 2024, the virus has affected 63 dairy herds across nine states and has resulted in two human infections. The virus causes unusual symptoms in dairy cows, including an unexpected drop in milk production, and thick colostrum-like milk. Notably, The US Food and Drug Administration reported that around 20% of tested retail milk samples contained H5N1 viruses, with a higher percentage of positive results from regions with infected cattle herds. Data are scant regarding how effectively pasteurization inactivates the H5N1 virus in milk. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the thermal stability of the H5 clade 2.3.4.4b viruses, along with one human H3N2 virus and other influenza subtype viruses, including H1, H3, H7, H9, and H10 subtype viruses. We also assessed the effectiveness of pasteurization in inactivating these viruses. We found that the avian H3 virus exhibits the highest thermal stability, whereas the H5N1 viruses that belong to clade 2.3.4.4b display moderate thermal stability. Importantly, our data provide direct evidence that the standard pasteurization methods used by dairy companies are effective in inactivating all tested subtypes of influenza viruses in raw milk. Our findings indicate that thermally pasteurized milk products do not pose a safety risk to consumers.

Subclinical cardiovascular disease (Sub-CVD) is an early stage of cardiovascular disease and is often asymptomatic. Risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and lifestyle, significantly affect Sub-CVD. Progress in imaging technology has facilitated the timely identification of disease phenotypes and risk categorization. The critical function of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in predicting Sub-CVD was the subject of this research. Initially used to evaluate bone mineral density, DXA has now evolved into an indispensable tool for assessing body composition, which is a pivotal determinant in estimating cardiovascular risk. DXA offers precise measurements of body fat, lean muscle mass, bone density, and abdominal aortic calcification, rendering it an essential tool for Sub-CVD evaluation. This study examined the efficacy of DXA in integrating various risk factors into a comprehensive assessment and how the application of machine learning could enhance the early discovery and control of cardiovascular risks. DXA exhibits distinct advantages and constraints compared to alternative imaging modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography. This review advocates DXA incorporation into cardiovascular health assessments, emphasizing its crucial role in the early identification and management of Sub-CVD.

Background: LncRNA HOXB-AS3 are associated with tumor progression in several types of carcinomas, yet, its possibly biological role in gallbladder carcinoma(GBC) remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the biological function of HOXB-AS3 in GBC. Methods: To know the potential function of HOXB-AS3 in gallbladder carcinoma, real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detected the expression of HOXB-AS3 in gallbladder carcinoma cells. The colony formation assay and cell counting kit-8 assay was performed to measured cell viability. Flow cytometry was to analyse cell apoptosis and cell cycle. Cell invasion and migration were determined by the transwell invasion assay and wound-healing assay. A nude mice xenograft tumor model was performed to investigate the biological function of HOXB-AS3 in vivo. Results: The results indicated that HOXB-AS3 was significantly elevated in gallbladder carcinoma tissues and cell lines. We used siHOXB-AS3 to knockdown the expression levels of HOXB-AS3. And knockdown HOXB-AS3 expression depressed gallbladder cancer cell viability and induced cell apoptosis. In addition, the gallbladder carcinoma cell cycle was obviously arrested at the G1 phase. Cell invasion and migration were markedly suppressed following knockdown HOXB-AS3 expression. Furthermore, the features of siHOXB-AS3 in gallbladder cancer cells could be reversed by the ERK1/2 phosphorylation agonist Ro 67–7476. Finally, we confirmed that HOXB-AS3 promoted the growth of transplanted tumors in vivo. Conclusion: HOXB-AS3 promoted gallbladder carcinoma cell proliferation, invasion and migration by activating the MEK/ERK signaling pathway. HOXB-AS3 contributed to gallbladder cancer tumorigenesis and metastasis, making it a viable therapeutic target for gallbladder cancer treatment.

ObjectivesNewborns and small infants are unable to cooperate actively during diagnostic procedures; therefore, sedation is often employee to maintain immobilization and obtain high-quality images. However, these procedures are often indicated in sick, vulnerable, or hemodynamically unstable neonates and young infants, which raises the associated risks of sedation. This study summarizes our 4-year of experience with safe and effective procedural sedation in this vulnerable population.Study designThis retrospective study analyzed data on neonates and young infants who underwent non-painful diagnostic procedures from December 2019 to November 2023. Patients were categorized into the neonate (aged≦ 28 days) and the young infant (29 days ≦ aged ≦ 90 days) groups.ResultsNon-pharmacological strategies, including sleeping naturally, swaddling/facilitated tucking, non-nutritive sucking, and skin-to-skin care, can achieve a success rate for sedation about 98.4%. In terms of pharmacological methods, our institution primarily utilizes chloral hydrate for procedural sedation in neonates and young infants undergoing non-painful diagnostic procedures. Midazolam serves as an alternative sedative. Chloral hydrate alone demonstrated a 92.5% success rate on the first attempt, compared to midazolam alone, with an 85.11% success rate. Neonates experienced a higher incidence of adverse events during sedation compared to young infants.ConclusionThis study reviews our 4-year experience with procedural sedation in neonates and young infants. Chloral hydrate demonstrated a high degree of safety and efficacy in this population. However, supervision by skilled medical personnel and extended observation is required. In our institution, the experience with midazolam is limited in this population, and further research is warranted to establish its safety and efficacy. Non-pharmacological strategies can achieve an acceptable rate of sedation success, which can be used based on patient’s tolerance.

Abstract Aim This study aims to translate the English version of the ‘caring ability of family caregivers of patients with cancer scale (CAFCPCS)’ into Chinese and validate its psychometric properties in the family caregivers of elderly patients with cancer. Design A methodological study. Methods Based on the Brislin translation model, the original scale will be translated and back‐translated, the Delphi expert consultation method will be adopted for cross‐cultural adaptation, and the pilot will be carried out in 20–30 family caregivers of elderly patients with cancer. Then, a dual‐centre prospective study will be conducted by recruiting 371–542 family caregivers of elderly patients with cancer to validate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of CAFCPCS. Results The scale's content validity will be evaluated using the Delphi expert inquiry method, and the face validity will be evaluated using a pre‐experiment. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) will be used to assess structural validity, while internal consistency reliability and split‐half reliability will be used to assess reliability. Patient or Public Contribution Public involvement is of great significance for this study. Participants will be used in a pre‐test to give feedback on whether the contents of the clinical pilot version of CAFCPCS after expert consultation can reflect real problems and whether the sentences can be well understood. Based on their opinions, the research group will further refine the scale.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to construct prediction models based on computerized tomography (CT) signs, histogram and morphology features for the diagnosis of micropapillary or solid (MIP/SOL) components of stage IA lung adenocarcinoma (LUAC) and to evaluate the models’ performance.MethodsThis clinical retrospective study included image data of 376 patients with stage IA LUAC based on postoperative pathology, admitted to Putian First Hospital from January 2019 to June 2023. According to the presence of MIP/SOL components in postoperative pathology, patients were divided into MIP/SOL+ and MIP/SOL- groups. Cases with tumors ≤ 3 cm and ≤ 2 cm were separately analyzed. Each subgroup of patients was then randomly divided into a training set and a test set in a ratio of 7:3. The training set was used to build the prediction model, and the test set was used for internal validation.ResultsFor tumors ≤ 3 cm, ground-glass opacity (GGO) [odds ratio (OR) = 0.244; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.103–0.569; p = 0.001], entropy (OR = 1.748; 95% CI: 1.213–2.577; p = 0.004), average CT value (OR = 1.002; 95% CI: 1.000–1.004; p = 0.002), and kurtosis (OR = 1.240; 95% CI: 1.023–1.513; p = 0.030) were independent predictors of MIP/SOL components of stage IA LUAC. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of the nomogram prediction model for predicting MIP/SOL components was 0.816 (95% CI: 0.756–0.877) in the training set and 0.789 (95% CI: 0.689–0.889) in the test set. In contrast, for tumors ≤ 2 cm, kurtosis was no longer an independent predictor. The nomogram prediction model had an AUC of 0.811 (95% CI: 0.731–0.891) in the training set and 0.833 (95% CI: 0.733–0.932) in the test set.ConclusionFor tumors ≤ 3 cm and ≤ 2 cm, GGO, average CT value, and entropy were the same independent influencing factors in predicting MIP/SOL components of stage IA LUAC. The nomogram prediction models have potential diagnostic value for identifying MIP/SOL components of early-stage LUAC.

ObjectiveTo determine the efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy combined with prolonged mild hypothermia compared with conventional treatment in managing acute middle cerebral artery occlusion, and to explore whether extending the duration of hypothermia can improve neurological function.MethodFrom 2018 to June 2023, a retrospective analysis was conducted on 45 patients with acute middle cerebral artery occlusion treated at the NICU of Suzhou Kowloon Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. After thrombectomy, patients were admitted to the neurological intensive care unit (NICU) for targeted temperature management. Patients were divided into two groups: the mild hypothermia group (34.5–35.9°C) receiving 5–7 days of treatment, and the normothermia group (control group) whose body temperature was kept between 36 and 37.5°C using pharmacological and physical cooling methods. Baseline characteristics and temperature changes were compared between the two groups of patients. The primary outcome was the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 3 month after surgery, and the secondary outcomes were related complications and mortality rate. Prognostic risk factors were investigated using both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.ResultsAmong 45 patients, 21 underwent prolonged mild hypothermia, and 24 received normothermia, with no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. The duration of mild hypothermia ranged from 5 to 7 days. The incidence of chills (33.3% vs. 8.3%, p = 0.031) and constipation (57.1% vs. 20.8%, p = 0.028) was significantly higher in the mild hypothermia group compared with the control group. There was no significant difference in mortality rates between the mild hypothermia and the control group (4.76% vs. 8.33%, p = 1.000, OR = 1.75, 95% CI, 0.171–17.949). At 3 month, there was no significant difference in the modified mRS (0–3) score between the mild hypothermia and control groups (52.4% vs. 25%, p = 0.114, OR = 0.477, 95% CI, 0.214–1.066). Infarct core volume was an independent risk factor for adverse neurological outcomes.ConclusionProlonged mild hypothermia following mechanical thrombectomy had no severe complications and shows a trend to improve the prognosis of neurological function. The Infarct core volume on CTP was an independent risk factor for predicting neurological function.

Background: The timing of central venous pressure (CVP) measurement may play a crucial role in heart failure management, yet no studies have explored this aspect. Methods: Clinical information pertaining to patients in critical condition with a diagnosis of heart failure was retrieved from the MIMIC-IV database. The association between initial measurements of central venous pressure (CVP) and the incidence of mortality from all causes was analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards approach. Subgroup analysis and propensity score matching were conducted for sensitivity analyses. Results: This study included 11,241 participants (median age, 75 years; 44.70 % female). Utilizing restricted cubic spline and Kaplan–Meier survival analyses, it was determined that prognostic outcomes were better when CVP was measured within the initial 5-h window. Multivariate-adjusted 1-year (HR: 0.69; 95 % CI: 0.61–0.77), 90-day (HR: 0.70; 95 % CI: 0.62–0.80), and 30-day (HR: 0.67; 95 % CI: 0.57–0.78) all-cause mortalities were significantly lower in patients with early CVP measurement, which was proved robustly in subgroup analysis. Subsequent to the application of propensity score matching, a cohort of 1536 matched pairs was established, with the observed mortality rates continuing to be significantly lower among participants who underwent early CVP assessment. Conclusions: Early CVP measurement (within 5 h) demonstrated an independent correlation with a decrease in both immediate and extended all-cause mortality rates among patients in critical condition suffering from heart failure.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious and disabling central nervous system injury. Its complex pathological mechanism can lead to sensory and motor dysfunction. It has been reported that signaling pathway plays a key role in the pathological process and neuronal recovery mechanism of SCI. Such as PI3K/Akt, MAPK, NF-κB, and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways. According to reports, various stimuli and cytokines activate these signaling pathways related to SCI pathology, thereby participating in the regulation of pathological processes such as inflammation response, cell apoptosis, oxidative stress, and glial scar formation after injury. Activation or inhibition of relevant pathways can delay inflammatory response, reduce neuronal apoptosis, prevent glial scar formation, improve the microenvironment after SCI, and promote neural function recovery. Based on the role of signaling pathways in SCI, they may be potential targets for the treatment of SCI. Therefore, understanding the signaling pathway and its inhibitors may be beneficial to the development of SCI therapeutic targets and new drugs. This paper mainly summarizes the pathophysiological process of SCI, the signaling pathways involved in SCI pathogenesis, and the potential role of specific inhibitors/activators in its treatment. In addition, this review also discusses the deficiencies and defects of signaling pathways in SCI research. It is hoped that this study can provide reference for future research on signaling pathways in the pathogenesis of SCI and provide theoretical basis for SCI biotherapy.

Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) represents a critical global health challenge with limited therapeutic options, prompting the exploration of alternative strategies. A key pathology in AD involves amyloid beta (Aβ) aggregation, and targeting both Aβ aggregation and oxidative stress is crucial for effective intervention. Natural compounds from medicinal and food sources have emerged as potential preventive and therapeutic agents, with Nelumbo nucifera leaf extract (NLE) showing promising properties.Methods: In this study, we utilized transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) models to investigate the potential of NLE in countering AD and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Various assays were employed to assess paralysis rates, food-searching capabilities, Aβ aggregate accumulation, oxidative stress, lifespan under stress conditions, and the expression of stress-resistance-related proteins. Additionally, autophagy induction was evaluated by measuring P62 levels and the formation of LGG-1+ structures, with RNAi-mediated inhibition of autophagy-related genes to confirm the mechanisms involved.Results: The results demonstrated that NLE significantly reduced paralysis rates in CL4176 and CL2006 worms while enhancing food-searching capabilities in CL2355 worms. NLE also attenuated Aβ aggregate accumulation and mitigated Aβ-induced oxidative stress in C. elegans. Furthermore, NLE extended the lifespan of worms under oxidative and thermal stress conditions, while concurrently increasing the expression of stress-resistance-related proteins, including SOD-3, GST-4, HSP-4, and HSP-6. Moreover, NLE induced autophagy in C. elegans, as evidenced by reduced P62 levels in BC12921 worms and the formation of LGG-1+ structures in DA2123 worms. The RNAi-mediated inhibition of autophagy-related genes, such as bec-1 and vps-34, negated the protective effects of NLE against Aβ-induced paralysis and aggregate accumulation.Discussion: These findings suggest that NLE ameliorates Aβ-induced toxicity by activating autophagy in C. elegans. The study underscores the potential of NLE as a promising candidate for further investigation in AD management, offering multifaceted approaches to mitigate AD-related pathology and stress-related challenges.

BackgroundThe benefits of home enteral nutrition (HEN) are increasingly recognized, with more scholars focusing on this field. This study aimed to comprehensively identify collaborative networks, analyze, and track research trends, focus on current hotspots, and accurately predict the forefront and focus of home enteral nutrition.MethodsA computer search of the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was conducted for studies related to home enteral nutrition published from January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2023, and select them in compliance with the PRISMA guidelines. The CiteSpace software was used for bibliometric visualization and comparative analysis of countries, institutions, journals, references, and keywords.ResultsA total of 1,113 documents were included, showing a steady annual increase in publication volume. The United States and the Mayo Clinic were the top publishing country and institution, with 302 and 41 papers, respectively. “CLIN NUTR” had the highest number of publications, totaling 221, while “ESPEN guideline on home enteral nutrition” was the most cited reference, with 43 citations. The most prolific author was Manpreet S with 29 papers.ConclusionThe management of HEN is a current research hotspot. The safety of HEN and how to improve patient compliance are critical areas for researchers to consider. Future research could focus on these aspects. The blurring of boundaries between hospital and home care and how to utilize telemedicine technologies to serve more patients deserve in-depth exploration. Researchers worldwide should combine their unique characteristics and advantages to strengthen international cooperation.

Colored potatoes have many health benefits because they are rich in anthocyanins. However, the constituent and property of anthocyanins in colored potatoes have not been systematically studied yet. Herein, metabolomic analysis was carried out to investigate the chemical composition of anthocyanins in the four different colored potatoes. After that, the extract and purification conditions, and the stability of the anthocyanins were further studied. The results indicated that the four colored potatoes contained abundant of polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin were identified as the major anthocyanidins in purple potatoes, whereas red potatoes were mainly consisted of pelargonidin and its derivatives. 84.47 mg C3GE/100 g DW of anthocyanins was obtained at the optimal conditions, which could be effectively purified macroporous resin of D101. Moreover, the anthocyanins were sensitive to pH, temperature, light, redox agents, and divalent or trivalent metal ions, but stable to sugars and univalent metal ions.

Abstract Background Focusing on key indicators of drought resistance is highly important for quickly mining candidate genes related to drought resistance in cotton. Results In the present study, drought resistance was identified in drought resistance-related RIL populations during the flowering and boll stages, and multiple traits were evaluated; these traits included three key indicators: plant height (PH), single boll weight (SBW) and transpiration rate (Tr). Based on these three key indicators, three groups of extreme mixing pools were constructed for BSA-seq. Based on the mapping interval of each trait, a total of 6.27 Mb QTL intervals were selected on chromosomes A13 (3.2 Mb), A10 (2.45 Mb) and A07 (0.62 Mb) as the focus of this study. Based on the annotation information and qRT‒PCR analysis, three key genes that may be involved in the drought stress response of cotton were screened: GhF6'H1, Gh3AT1 and GhPER55. qRT‒PCR analysis of parental and extreme germplasm materials revealed that the expression of these genes changed significantly under drought stress. Cotton VIGS experiments verified the important impact of key genes on cotton drought resistance. Conclusions This study focused on the key indicators of drought resistance, laying the foundation for the rapid mining of drought-resistant candidate genes in cotton and providing genetic resources for directed molecular breeding of drought resistance in cotton.

Research background. Peanut allergy poses a significant threat to human health due to the increased risk of long-term morbidity at low doses. Modifying protein structure to affect sensitization is a popular topic. Experimental approach. In this study, the purified peanut allergen Ara h 1 was enzymatically hydrolysed using Flavourzyme, alkaline protease or a combination of both. The binding ability of Ara h 1 to antibodies, gene expression and secretion levels of the proinflammatory factors interleukin-5 and interleukin-6 in Caco-2 cells was measured. Changes in the secondary and tertiary structures before and after treatment with Ara h 1 were analysed by circular dichroism and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Results and conclusions. The results indicated a decrease of the allergenicity and proinflammatory ability of Ara h 1. The evaluation showed that the Flavourzyme and alkaline protease treatments caused particle shortening and aggregation. The fluorescence emission peak increased by 3.4-fold after the combined treatment with both proteases. Additionally, the secondary structure underwent changes and the hydrophobicity also increased 8.95-fold after the combined treatment. Novelty and scientific contribution. These findings partially uncover the mechanism of peanut sensitization and provide an effective theoretical basis for the development of a new method of peanut desensitization.

Abstract Fusulinid foraminifera are among the most common microfossils of the Late Palaeozoic and act as key fossils for stratigraphic correlation, paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental indication, and evolutionary studies of marine life. Accurate and efficient identification forms the basis of such research involving fusulinids but is limited by the lack of digitized image datasets. This article presents the first large image dataset of fusulinids containing 2,400 images of individual samples subjected to 16 genera of all six fusulinid families and labelled to species level. These images were collected from the literature and our unpublished samples through an automatic segmentation procedure implementing BlendMask, a deep learning model. The dataset shows promise for the efficient accumulation of fossil images through automated procedures and will facilitate taxonomists in future morphologic and systematic studies.

AbstractContext Andrographolide (Andr) is a bioactive Andr diterpenoid extracted from herbaceous Andrographis paniculata (Burm. F.) Wall. ex Nees (Acanthaceae). Andr can relieve cardiac dysfunction in mice by inhibiting the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) pathway.Objective This study investigates the efficacy and underlying mechanism of Andr on cardiac hypertrophy in mice.Materials and methods Male C57 mice (20–25 g, 6–8 weeks) were divided into four groups (n = 10 mice/group) as sham group (sham operation), transverse aortic constriction (TAC) model group, TAC + Andr 100 mg/kg group and TAC + Andr 200 mg/kg group. Andr groups were given intragastric administration of Andr (100 and 200 mg/kg) once a day for 14 consecutive days. An in vitro hypertrophy model was established by adding 1 μM of Ang II to H9c2 cells for 48 h induction.Results In TAC-mice, Andr improved echocardiographic indices [reduced LVESD (30.4% or 37.1%) and LVEDD (24.8% or 26.4%), increased EF (22.9% or 42.6%) and FS (25.4% or 52.2%)], reduced BNP (11.5% or 23.6%) and Ang II levels (10.3% or 32.8%), attenuates cardiac fibrosis and reduces cardiac cell apoptosis in TAC mice. In vitro, Andr attenuated cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and decreased the protein expression of GRP78 (67.8%), GRP94 (47.6%), p-PERK (44.9%) and CHOP (66.8%) in Ang-II-induced H9c2 cells and reversed after endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress agonist Tunicamycin (TN) treatment.Discussion and conclusions Andr was found to be an anti-hypertrophic regulator, which could attenuate cardiac hypertrophy by suppressing ER stress. It may be a new therapeutic drug for cardiac hypertrophy.

IntroductionTo investigate the prognostic value of the consistency between the residual quantitative flow ratio (QFR) and postpercutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) QFR in patients undergoing revascularization.MethodsThis was a single-center, retrospective, observational study. All enrolled patients were divided into five groups according to the ΔQFR (defined as the value of the post-PCI QFR minus the residual QFR): (1) Overanticipated group; (2) Slightly overanticipated group; (3) Consistent group; (4) Slightly underanticipated group; and (5) Underanticipated group. The primary outcome was the 5-year target vessel failure (TVF).ResultsA total of 1373 patients were included in the final analysis. The pre-PCI QFR and post-PCI QFR were significantly different among the five groups. TVF within 5 years occurred in 189 patients in all the groups. The incidence of TVF was significantly greater in the underanticipated group than in the consistent group (P = 0.008), whereas no significant differences were found when comparing the underanticipated group with the other three groups. Restricted cubic spline regression analysis showed that the risk of TVF was nonlinearly related to the ΔQFR. A multivariate Cox regression model revealed that a ΔQFR≤ −0.1 was an independent risk factor for TVF.ConclusionsThe consistency between the residual QFR and post-PCI QFR may be associated with the long-term prognosis of patients. Patients whose post-PCI QFR is significantly lower than the residual QFR may be at greater risk of TVF. An aggressive PCI strategy for lesions is anticipated to have less functional benefit and may not result in a better clinical outcome.

Background: While serum uric acid (SUA) is known as a cardiovascular disease risk factor and is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality, the relationship between SUA and cardiovascular adaptability under exercise stress remains unclear. Aims: This study aims to elucidate the relationship between SUA levels and cardiovascular fitness, particularly as manifested during cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2004, this study included 5765 participants aged 12–49 years. Heart rate recovery (HRR) during cardiopulmonary exercise testing was measured as an indicator of cardiovascular fitness. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to explore the association between SUA levels and heart rate recovery at 1 min (HRR1) and 2 min (HRR2) post-exercise. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, an inverse relationship was found between SUA levels and both HRR1 and HRR2. Multivariate adjusted smoothing spline plots demonstrated a decrease in HRR1 and HRR2 with increasing SUA levels. This negative correlation was observed across nearly all subgroups. Conclusions: Elevated SUA levels are indicative of poorer cardiovascular adaptability in the adult US population.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent microvascular complication in diabetic patients that poses a serious risk as it can cause substantial visual impairment and even vision loss. Due to the prolonged onset of DR, lengthy treatment duration, and limited therapeutic effectiveness, it is extremely important to find a new strategy for the treatment of DR. Postbiotic is an emerging dietary supplement which consists of the inactivate microbiota and its metabolites. Numerous animal experiments have demonstrated that intervention with postbiotics reduces hyperglycemia, attenuates retinal peripapillary and endothelial cell damage, improves retinal microcirculatory dysfunction, and consequently delays the progression of DR. More strikingly, unlike conventional probiotics and prebiotics, postbiotics with small molecules can directly colonize the intestinal epithelial cells, and exert heat-resistant, acid-resistant, and durable for storage. Despite few clinical significance, oral administration with postbiotics might become the effective management for the prevention and treatment of DR. In this review, we summarized the basic conception, classification, molecular mechanisms, and the advances in the therapeutic implications of postbiotics in the pathogenesis of DR. Postbiotics present great potential as a viable adjunctive therapy for DR.

The rapid and accurate detection of peanuts and soybeans allergen is important to the food safety. In this study, Cu-TCPP nanosheet, a kind of ultra-thin metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized and applied in loop-mediated isothermal amplification (named Cu-TCPP@LAMP), which can inhibit the non-specific amplification by absorbing and precise temperature releasing of single primer. As thus, Cu-TCPP@LAMP can achieve high sensitivity and specific amplification of the target gene. As a result, peanut and soybean allergens genes contained in food were successfully detected with a favorable detection sensitivity (5 ng/μL for peanuts and 10 ng/μL for soybeans) and reliable repeatability (The coefficient of variation was 3.38% for peanuts and 3.33% for soybeans). Moreover, the established method was utilized for detection of several commercial products, and had a high consistency with the standard method. Apart from food allergens, this novel assay can be widely used in other areas, such as pathogen detection, tumor nucleic acid detection and so on.

Considering the current economic and employment landscape, marked by high levels of uncertainty and challenges, this study introduces the challenge–hindrance–threat appraisal (CHTA) framework to examine workplace stress, with a particular focus on the often-overlooked role of threat appraisal. Across three studies using independent samples and multi-wave survey data, our research provides evidence supporting the CHTA framework and reveals the differential effects of three types of stress appraisals on the work-related well-being and behaviors of individuals. Specifically, Study 1 establishes the three-factor structure of CHTA, confirming its robust psychometric properties in each appraisal dimension. Study 2 demonstrates that threat appraisals offer unique insights into stress-related outcomes, beyond challenge and hindrance appraisals. Study 3 reveals that challenge appraisals foster learning behavior through enhancing work engagement and reduce turnover intentions through alleviating emotional exhaustion. Conversely, threat appraisals escalate turnover intentions through intensifying emotional exhaustion. Interestingly, hindrance appraisals exhibit no significant effect on either work engagement or emotional exhaustion, precluding any indirect influence on learning behavior or turnover intentions. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of differentiating between the three types of cognitive appraisals of stress—namely, challenge, hindrance, and threat appraisals—in stress management in order to enhance employee well-being and organizational effectiveness.

Under the background of global climate change, the evolution of climate in the future is the focus of geoscience. The Nanri Channel is an important passage connecting the Xinghua Bay and the Taiwan Strait, in China, and the study of its provenance and paleoenvironmental alternation is of great significance to the climate evolution in the eastern coast of China. The grain size and X-ray diffraction analyses of sediments from ZK1 in Nanri Channel and ZK5 in Xinghua Bay, were used to study the variation of grain size and clay mineral characteristics and to analyze the changes in hydrodynamic characteristics, provenance, and paleoenvironmental evolution in the regions since the Last Glacial Maximum. The results show that the sedimentary environment of ZK1 varies from the nearshore tidal flat facies with strong hydrodynamic conditions and the neighboring rivers as the main provenance, to the littoral facies with weak hydrodynamic conditions and the Yangtze River-like type sediments as the main provenance. The sedimentary environment of ZK5 is from the nearshore tidal flat facies with strong hydrodynamic conditions to the littoral facies with weak hydrodynamic conditions, and the provenance of both facies is mainly Yangtze River-like type sediments. The clay mineral characteristics of ZK1 show that the climate in the Nanri Channel has experienced a change from cool and wet, to mild and dry, to mild and wet since the Last Glacial Maximum, while the climate in the Xinghua Bay has experienced a change from warm and humid, to moderate and dry, to warm and humid since the early-middle Holocene, which provides scientific theoretical support for the provenance and paleoenvironment of sediments in the study area and neighboring areas.

Drought stress significantly affects the growth, development, and yield of cotton, triggering the response of multiple genes. Among them, ascorbate peroxidase (APX) is one of the important antioxidant enzymes in the metabolism of reactive oxygen species in plants, and APX enhances the ability of plants to resist oxidation, thus increasing plant stress tolerance. Therefore, enhancing the activity of APX in cells is crucial to improving plant stress resistance. Previous studies have isolated differentially expressed proteins under drought stress (GhAPX7) in drought-resistant (KK1543) and drought-sensitive (XLZ26) plants. Thus, this study analyzed the expression patterns of GhAPX7 in different cotton tissues to verify the drought resistance function of GhAPX7 and explore its regulatory pathways. GhAPX7 had the highest expression in cotton leaves, which significantly increased under drought stress, suggesting that GhAPX7 is essential for improving antioxidant capacity and enzyme activities in cotton. GhAPX7 silencing indirectly affects pronounced leaf yellowing and wilting in drought-resistant and drought-sensitive plants under drought stress. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content was significantly increased and chlorophyll and proline content and APX enzyme activity were generally decreased in silenced plants compared to the control. This result indicates that GhAPX7 may improve drought resistance by influencing the contents of MDA, chlorophyll, proline, and APX enzyme activity through increased expression levels. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the drought-related differentially expressed genes between the control and treated groups enriched plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling, and plant–pathogen interaction pathways. Therefore, the decreased expression of GhAPX7 significantly affects the expression levels of genes in these three pathways, reducing drought resistance in plants. This study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms of GhAPX7 and its role in drought resistance and lays a foundation for further research on the molecular mechanisms of response to drought stress in cotton.

Abstract The piRNA pathway is essential for female fertility in golden hamsters and likely humans, but not in mice. However, the role of individual PIWIs in mammalian reproduction remains poorly understood outside of mice. Here, we describe the expression profiles, subcellular localization, and knockout-associated reproductive defects for all four PIWIs in golden hamsters. In female golden hamsters, PIWIL1 and PIWIL3 are highly expressed throughout oogenesis and early embryogenesis, while knockout of PIWIL1 leads to sterility, and PIWIL3 deficiency results in subfertility with lagging zygotic development. PIWIL1 can partially compensate for TE silencing in PIWIL3 knockout females, but not vice versa. PIWIL1 and PIWIL4 are the predominant PIWIs expressed in adult and postnatal testes, respectively, while PIWIL2 is present at both stages. Loss of any PIWI expressed in testes leads to sterility and severe but distinct spermatogenesis disorders. These findings illustrate the non-redundant regulatory functions of PIWI-piRNAs in gametogenesis and early embryogenesis in golden hamsters, facilitating study of their role in human fertility.

Abstract Background Uterine cervical carcinoma is a severe health threat worldwide, especially in China. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) has revised the staging system, emphasizing the strength of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We aimed to investigate long-term prognostic factors for FIGO 2018 stage II–IIIC2r uterine cervical squamous cell carcinoma following definitive radiotherapy and establish a prognostic model using MRI-derived tumor volume. Methods Patients were restaged according to the FIGO 2018 staging system and randomly grouped into training and validation cohorts (7:3 ratio). Optimal cutoff values of squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag) and tumor volume derived from MRI were generated for the training cohort. A nomogram was constructed based on overall survival (OS) predictors, which were selected using univariate and multivariate analyses. The performance of the nomogram was validated and compared with the FIGO 2018 staging system. Risk stratification cutoff points were generated, and survival curves of low-risk and high-risk groups were compared. Results We enrolled 396 patients (training set, 277; validation set, 119). The SCC-Ag and MRI-derived tumor volume cutoff values were 11.5 ng/mL and 28.85 cm3, respectively. A nomogram was established based on significant prognostic factors, including SCC-Ag, poor differentiation, tumor volume, chemotherapy, and FIGO 2018 stage. Abstract Background Intra-tumoral heterogeneity (ITH) is a distinguished hallmark of cancer, and cancer stem cells (CSCs) contribute to this malignant characteristic. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate and even target the regulatory factors driving intra-tumoral stemness. c-Myc is a vital oncogene frequently overexpressed or amplified in various cancer types, including breast cancer. Our previous study indicated its potential association with breast cancer stem cell (BCSC) biomarkers. Methods In this research, we performed immunohistochemical (IHC) staining on sixty breast cancer surgical specimens for c-Myc, CD44, CD24, CD133 and ALDH1A1. Then, we analyzed transcriptomic atlas of 1533 patients with breast cancer from public database. Results IHC staining indicated the positive correlation between c-Myc and BCSC phenotype. Then, we used bioinformatic analysis to interrogate transcriptomics data of 1533 breast cancer specimens and identified an intriguing link among c-Myc, cancer stemness and copper-induced cell death (also known as “cuproptosis”). We screened out cuproptosis-related characteristics that predicts poor clinical outcomes and found that the pro-tumoral cuproptosis-based features were putatively enriched in MYC-targets and showed a significantly positive correlation with cancer stemness. Conclusion In addition to previous reports on its oncogenic roles, c-Myc showed significant correlation to stemness phenotype and copper-induced cell toxicity in breast cancer tissues. Moreover, transcriptomics data demonstrated that pro-tumoral cuproptosis biomarkers had putative positive association with cancer stemness. This research combined clinical samples with large-scale bioinformatic analysis, covered description and deduction, bridged classic oncogenic mechanisms to innovative opportunities, and inspired the development of copper-based nanomaterials in targeting highly heterogeneous tumors.

【Objective】The study aims to explore the traits and their correlation of soil and chemical constituents of tobacco leaves in Meizhou tobacco production area of Guangdong, and explore the key soil factors affecting the chemical quality of tobacco leaves.【Method】48 tobacco-planting soil and the corresponding middle and upper flue-cured tobacco leaves were collected to analysis the traits of soil and chemical constituents of tobacco leaves. Stepwise regression analysis was used to explore the key soil factors influencing the chemical constituents of tobacco leaves.【Result】In the tobacco-growing soil of Meizhou tobacco production area of Guangdong, the proportion of low soil pH value accounts for 64.58%, the content of organic matter (SOM) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) are rich, the appropriate proportion of total nitrogen (TN) content accounts for 68.75%, the rich and extremely rich proportion of total phosphorus (TP) content accounts for 70.83%, the deficient and extremely deficient proportion of total potassium (TK) content accounts for 68.75%, and the rich and extremely rich proportion of available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK) account for 97.92%, 91.76% and 79.17%, respectively. The content of total sugar, starch and sugar alkali ratio in the middle tobacco leaves were higher, accounting for 91.67%, 100% and 66.67% respectively; the content of total sugar, reducing sugar and starch in the upper tobacco leaves were higher, accounting for 87.50%, 75.00%, 100% and 56.25% respectively; the content of nicotine was lower, accounting for 47.92%. The results of principal component analysis showed that sugar alkali ratio, total nitrogen, nicotine, total sugar and reducing sugar content were the main indicators for evaluating the chemical constituents of middle tobacco leaves, and reducing sugar, sugar alkali ratio, total sugar and nicotine were the main indicators for evaluating the chemical constituents of upper tobacco leaves. Comprehensive chemical quality of middle tobacco leaves was positively correlated with soil AK content, nicotine content in middle tobacco leaves is negatively correlated with soil AK content, the contents of total sugar, reducing sugar and starch in middle tobacco leaves and starch in upper tobacco leaves are negatively correlated with the content of soil WSOC, the content of reducing sugar in upper tobacco leaves is positively correlated with soil AP; the comprehensive chemical quality of upper tobacco leaves was negatively correlated with soil AP content, and positively correlated with soil AK content and pH value.【Conclusion】Improving the soil pH value, AK and WSOC content and reducing the AP content in soil is beneficial to improve the quality of Meizhou tobacco leaves.

Abstract Background Yolk sac tumour (YST) is the second most common ovarian germ cell tumour and usually presents in children and young women. However, tumours rarely occur as malignant gynaecological tumours with YST components. Case presentation We present one case of endometrioid carcinoma and clear cell carcinoma with YST components and two other cases of YSTs associated with high-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary in females. After surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy, the patient with endometrioid carcinoma had progressive disease and died 20 months later, and the other two were still alive at the last follow-up. Conclusions To our knowledge, these mixed neoplasm associations are unusual, and these cases illustrate the diagnosis and prognosis of YST associated with malignant gynaecological tumours, emphasizing early recognition and aggressive treatment.

With frequent occurrences of global public events, the prices of national grains continue to soar. As one of the countries with the largest populations globally, China has always regarded food security as a fundamental cornerstone of its development. However, with the continuous emergence of factors such as urbanization, scarcity of land resources, and climate change, China’s food security faces unprecedented challenges. Hence, this study empirically examines the impact of digital inclusive finance on multi-dimensional food security based on panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2011–2020. The research found that China’s multi-dimensional food security level from 2011–2020 showed a stable yet rising trend, with the spatial pattern of each location generally consistent with the overall trend. The Theil index for China’s multi-dimensional food security showed an upward trend from 2011–2020. Digital inclusive finance can promote multi-dimensional food security. The breadth of coverage and depth of use of digital inclusive finance have a significant promoting effect on safeguarding multi-dimensional food security, while the degree of digitization has not played a promoting role. Digital inclusive finance mainly ensures multi-dimensional food security through two pathways: promoting urbanization levels and enhancing marketization levels.

The dynamic spreading mechanism of liquid on a specific surface is vital for understanding interface wetting and antifouling. Whereas, how to control the spreading process and accelerate the spreading speed is a major challenge. The rock‐climbing fish is characterized by its alepidote feature that lives in stream habitats dominated by strong currents. The mucus on its body surface plays a vital role in its adherence and maintenance of antifouling and antibacterial properties. However, the rapid, uniform, and efficient spreading mechanism of mucus on the fish body surface remains largely unknown. Herein, it is revealed that the surface of the rock‐climbing fish is overlaid fully by the microhexagonal texture structure. This hexagonal structure shows a superspreading effect on liquid diffusion, resulting from testing with bionic microfabrication inspired by the rock‐climbing fish. It is demonstrated that the microhexagonal‐textured surface can enhance liquid spreading quickly and evenly on the surface by regulating the moving contact line of the liquid. This kind of superspreading mechanism has great potential applications in the antifouling, electroencephalogram electrode interfaces, flexible skin sensors, and interfacial lubrication of underwater surfaces.

BackgroundOpen globe injuries (OGIs) are one of the leading causes of monocular vision loss, and the clinical characteristics of OGIs are region specific. The features and patterns of OGIs in Southwest China are poorly known and not well studied. Our study aimed to review the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients hospitalized for OGIs in Southwest China.MethodsA retrospective study of OGI patients admitted to the West China Hospital from January 1st, 2015, to December 31st, 2019, was performed. Demographic characteristics and injury details were recorded. The Birmingham Eye Trauma Terminology system and the ocular trauma score (OTS) were used.ResultsA total of 3,014 patients were included. The male-to-female ratio was 5.2:1, and the mean age was 35.6 ± 19.1 years. 15.2% of patients were from the ethnic groups. The highest-risk occupation was the farmer (30.3%), followed by the worker (28.5%). OGIs occurred more frequently in people with middle (37.0%) and primary school (33.1%) education levels. Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disordered breathing diseases that characterized by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH). This work aimed to explore the role of circ-CIMIRC in CIH-induced myocardial injury. CIH aggravated myocardial tissue damage in rats. Circ_CIMIRC overexpression promoted apoptosis and reduced the colocalization of Tom20 and Parkin and mitophagy in CIH-treated H9c2 cells. Additionally, FbxL4 interacted with PINK1, FbxL4 silencing reduced PINK1 ubiquitination in H9c2 cells. Two major ubiquitination sites (K319 and K433) were responsible for ubiquitination of PINK1. Circ_CIMIRC promoted FbxL4-mediated ubiquitination and degradation of PINK1. Furthermore, circ_CIMIRC inhibition alleviated the pathological damage, fibrosis and apoptosis of myocardial tissues, reduced oxidative stress in CIH rats. In conclusion, circ_CIMIRC silencing repressed FbxL4-mediated ubiquitination and degradation of PINK1 and then enhanced PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy, thereby alleviating myocardial damage in CIH rats. Thus, circ_CIMIRC may be a potential strategy to alleviate CIH-induced myocardial damage.

Summary of Background Data.With the increasing incidence and mortality of refractory mycoplasma pneumonia (RMPP), the early diagnosis and treatment of RMPP have attracted more and more attention and have become a major concern in pediatrics. Objective. The study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics of children with RMPP and to explore the biomarkers for the early prediction of RMPP, thus providing references for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of RMPP in children. Methods. Baseline clinical characteristics, clinical symptoms, physical examination, chest imaging, and laboratory indicators between children with RMPP and general refractory mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (GMPP) were compared. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine independent risk factors for RMPP. ROC curves were adopted to analyze the predictive values of biomarkers. Results. The RMPP group had more severe clinical symptoms and manifestations on imaging (including pleural effusion, pulmonary consolidation, and pulmonary atelectasis), a higher incidence of extrapulmonary complications, and a longer duration of hospital stays. To ensure the safety of life and property of residents on landslides and reveal the deformation and failure law of masonry buildings on landslides, it is necessary to carry out a simulation study on the deformation and failure process of masonry buildings under the action of landslide deformation. A refined model of a masonry building was established based on the contact separation modeling method in ABAQUS, and the viscous contact interface was used to simulate the effect of mortar in the wall. Comparing the results of the numerical simulation with the physical model test results, the main conclusion is as follows: through the comparison of macroscopic deformation characteristics and microscopic stress and strain data obtained from physical and numerical model tests, the load-strain curve of the numerical model test agrees well with that of the physical model test, and their strain clouds are consistent, proving the validity of the numerical simulation method. The law of crack propagation and strain distribution of building walls in landslide tension areas is revealed, which can provide a basis for the protection design of masonry buildings in landslide tension areas.

Little information was so far available about allergenic mechanism of the roasted peanut allergens during initial stages of allergy. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of roasting (150 °C, 20 min) on biochemical and biological properties of Ara h 3, a major peanut allergen. Allergenicity of roasted peanut emulsion to mice, differences in uptakes between Ara h 3 purified from raw peanuts (named as Ara h 3-Raw) and that purified from roasted peanuts (named as Ara h 3-Roasted) by bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) and the implication of cell surface receptors involving in uptake, and changes in glycosylation and structure of Ara h 3 after roasting were analyzed in this study. This study suggested that roasting increased allergenicity of peanut to BALB/c mice. Maillard reaction and structural changes of Ara h 3 induced by roasting significantly altered the uptake of Ara h 3-Roasted by BMDCs, and modified Ara h 3 fate in processes involved in immunogenicity and hyper allergenicity, indicating that food processing pattern can change food allergenicity.

Objective To summarize the clinical and imaging features of patients with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). Methods and Results Five patients with PCA admitted in West China Hospital, Sichuan University from April to June 2021 were included. All of them showed spatial perception disorder, simultaneous agnosia, miscalculation, agraphia, structural apraxia, environmental agnosia. Apraxia of dressing and agnosia of left and right were found in 3 cases. One case had facial agnosia, visual ataxia and object perception disorder. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarker determination: amyloid β⁃protein 42 (Aβ42) decreased in 3 cases, the ratio of Aβ42/amyloid β⁃protein 40 (Aβ40) decreased significantly in 2 cases, the content of total tau protein (t ⁃ tau) increased in all 5 cases, phosphorylated tau 181 protein (p ⁃ tau181) increased in 3 cases. Neuropsychological tests showed that: 1) Five patients all had different degrees of cognitive dysfunction and impairment of activities of daily living, as well as impairment of visuospatial ability, visual memory and attention. 2) Three cases had anxiety and depression, language and executive function were impaired in 3 cases, and verbal memory was impaired in 2 cases. Head MRI examination all indicated different degrees of parieto ⁃ occipital ⁃temporal cortical atrophy. Hypometabolism in posterior regions involving parietal and temporal cortex was observed in one case with 18F⁃FDG PET. Three cases completed the visual field examination, including 5 cases of binocular vision loss, one case of complete visual field defect, 2 cases of partial visual field defect. Except one case lost to follow⁃up, other 4 cases were followed up for 20-22 months. Two cases of cognitive function, visuospatical ability decline, of which one case could not take care of themselves most of the life. Cognitive function and visuospatial ability improved in one case. There was no significant change in cognitive function and visuospatial ability in one case. Conclusions PCA should be considered in patients with relatively early⁃onset of agnosia, visual field defect and visuospatial impairment. Comprehensive neuropsychological tests related to visual function, brain MRI, 18F⁃FDG PET and CSF biomarkers would be helpful for accurate diagnosis.

Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) plays a significant role in chiral separation via the double separation principle, partition coefficient difference between the two phases, and electroosmotic flow-driven separation. Given the distinct properties of the inner wall stationary phase (SP), the separation ability of each SP differs from one another. Particularly, it provides large room for promising applications of open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). We divided the OT-CEC SPs developed over the past four years into six types: ionic liquids, nanoparticle materials, microporous materials, biomaterials, non-nanopolymers, and others, to mainly introduce their characteristics in chiral drug separation. There also added a few classic SPs that occurred within ten years as supplements to enrich the features of each SP. Additionally, we discuss their applications in metabolomics, food, cosmetics, environment, and biology as analytes in addition to chiral drugs. OT-CEC plays an increasingly significant role in chiral separation and may promote the development of capillary electrophoresis (CE) combined with other instruments in recent years, such as CE with mass spectrometry (CE/MS) and CE with ultraviolet light detector (CE/UV).
