Search

We report the identification of a set of old super metal-rich dwarf stars with orbits of low eccentricity that reach a maximum height from the Galactic plane between ~0.5-1.5 kpc. We discuss their properties to understand their origins. We use data from the internal data release 6 of the Gaia-ESO Survey. We selected stars observed at high resolution with abundances of 21 species of 18 individual elements. We apply hierarchical clustering to group the stars with similar chemical abundances within the complete chemical abundance space. According to their chemical properties, this set of super metal-rich stars can be arranged into five subgroups. Four seem to follow a chemical enrichment flow, where nearly all abundances increase in lockstep with Fe. The fifth subgroup shows different chemical characteristics. All subgroups have the following features: median ages of the order of 7-9 Gyr, Solar or sub-Solar [Mg/Fe] ratios, maximum height between 0.5-1.5 kpc, low eccentricities, and a detachment from the expected metallicity gradient with guiding radius. The high metallicity of our stars is incompatible with a formation in the Solar neighbourhood. Their dynamic properties agree with theoretical expectations that these stars travelled from the inner Galaxy due to blurring and, most importantly, to churning. We suggest that most of this population's stars originated in the Milky Way's inner regions (inner disc and/or the bulge) and later migrated to the Solar neighbourhood. Detailed knowledge about stellar winds and evolution at different metallicities is crucial for understanding stellar populations and feedback in the Local Group of galaxies and beyond. Despite efforts in the literature, we still lack a comprehensive, empirical view of the dependence of wind properties on metallicity ($Z$). Here, we investigate the winds of O and B stars in the Milky Way (MW) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We gathered a sample of 96 stars analyzed by means of the NLTE code CMFGEN. We explored their wind strengths and terminal velocities to address the $Z$ dependence, over a large luminosity range. The empirical wind-luminosity relation (WLR) obtained updates and extends previous results in the literature. It reveals a luminosity and $Z$ dependence, in agreement with the radiatively driven wind theory. For bright objects ($\log L/L_\odot \gtrsim 5.4$), we infer that $\dot{M} \sim Z^{0.5-0.8}$. However, this dependence seems to get weaker or vanish at lower luminosities. The analysis of the terminal velocities suggests a shallow $Z^n$ dependence, with $n \sim 0.1-0.2$, but it should be confirmed with a larger sample and more accurate $V_{\infty}$ determinations. Recent results on SMC stars based on the PoWR code support our inferred WLR. On the other hand, recent bow-shocks measurements stand mostly above our derived WLR. Theoretical calculations of the WLR are not precise, specially at low $L$, where the results scatter. Deviations between our results and recent predictions are identified to be due to the weak wind problem and the extreme terminal velocities predicted by the models. The close relationship between the nature of the Triangulum-Andromeda (TriAnd) overdensity and the Galactic disk has become increasingly evident in recent years. However, the chemical pattern of this overdensity (R$_{GC}$ = 20 - 30 kpc) is unique and differs from what we know of the local disk. In this study, we analyze the chemical abundances of five $\alpha$ elements (Mg, O, Si, Ca, and Ti) in a sample of stars belonging to the TriAnd overdensity, including stars with [Fe/H] $<$ $-$1.2, to investigate the evolution of the $\alpha$ elements with metallicity. High-resolution spectra from Gemini North with GRACES were analyzed. Overall, the TriAnd population presents an $\alpha$-element pattern that differs from that of the local disk; the TriAnd stars fall in between the local disk and the dwarf galaxies in the [X/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] plane. The high [Mg/Fe] ratios obtained for the lower metallicity TriAnd stars may indicate a roughly parallel sequence to the Milky Way local disk at lower values of [Fe/H], revealing a 'knee' shifted towards lower metallicities for the TriAnd population. Similar behavior is also exhibited in the [Ca/Fe] and [Si/Fe] ratios. However, for O and Ti the behavior of the [X/Fe] ratios shows a slight decay with decreasing metallicity. Our results reinforce the TriAnd overdensity as a unique stellar population of the Milky Way, with an abundance pattern that is different from all stellar populations studied to date. The complete understanding of the complex TriAnd population will require high-resolution spectroscopic observations of a larger sample of TriAnd stars.

The Triangulum--Andromeda (TriAnd) overdensity is a distant structure of the Milky Way located in the second Galactic quadrant well below the Galactic plane. Since its discovery, its nature has been under discussion, whether it could be old perturbations of the Galactic disk or the remains of a disrupted former dwarf galaxy. In this study, we investigate the kinematics and chemical composition in 13 stars selected as TriAnd candidates from 2MASS photometry. The sample was observed using the GRACES high-resolution spectrograph attached to the Gemini North telescope. Based on radial velocities obtained from the spectra and the astrometric data from GAIA, three different kinematic criteria were used to classify our sample stars as belonging to the TriAnd overdensity. The TriAnd confirmed members in our sample span a range in metallicities, including two metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] $\sim$ -1.3 dex). We show that the adopted kinematical classification also chemically segregates TriAnd and non-TriAnd members of our sample, indicating a unique chemical pattern of the TriAnd stars. Our results indicate different chemical patterns for the [Na/Fe], [Al/Fe], [Ba/Fe], and [Eu/Fe] ratios in the TriAnd stars when compared to the chemical pattern of the local disk; the paucity of studies chemically characterizing the outer disk population of the Milky Way is the main obstacle in establishing that the TriAnd population is chemically similar to field stars in the outer disk. The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is imaging ~9300 deg^2 of the celestial sphere in twelve optical bands using a dedicated 0.8 m robotic telescope, the T80-South, at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile. The telescope is equipped with a 9.2k by 9.2k e2v detector with 10 um pixels, resulting in a field-of-view of 2 deg^2 with a plate scale of 0.55"/pixel. The survey consists of four main subfields, which include two non-contiguous fields at high Galactic latitudes (8000 deg^2 at |b| > 30 deg) and two areas of the Galactic plane and bulge (for an additional 1300 deg^2). S-PLUS uses the Javalambre 12-band magnitude system, which includes the 5 u, g, r, i, z broad-band filters and 7 narrow-band filters centered on prominent stellar spectral features: the Balmer jump/[OII], Ca H+K, H-delta, G-band, Mg b triplet, H-alpha, and the Ca triplet. S-PLUS delivers accurate photometric redshifts (delta_z/(1+z) = 0.02 or better) for galaxies with r < 20 AB mag and redshift < 0.5, thus producing a 3D map of the local Universe over a volume of more than 1 (Gpc/h)^3. The final S-PLUS catalogue will also enable the study of star formation and stellar populations in and around the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, as well as searches for quasars, variable sources, and low-metallicity stars. In this paper we introduce the main characteristics of the survey, illustrated with science verification data highlighting the unique capabilities of S-PLUS. We report the serendipitous discovery of a stellar stream in the constellation Pegasus in the south Galactic hemisphere. The stellar stream was detected using the SDSS Data Release 14 by means of a matched filter in the color--magnitude diagram that is optimised for a stellar population that is 8 Gyr old with [Fe/H] = $-$0.46 dex, and located at heliocentric distance of 18 kpc. The candidate stream is faint (turnoff point at $r_0 \sim$ 19.6), sparse and barely visible in SDSS photometry. It is also detected in the (shallower) Pan-STARRs data. The residual stellar density in the $(u-g)_0$, $(g-r)_0$ color--color diagram gives the same estimate for the age and [Fe/H] of this stellar population. The stream is located at a Galactic coordinates $(l,b) = (79.4,-24.6)$ and extends over 9$^\circ$ (2.5 kpc), with a width of 112 pc. 1I/'Oumuamua is the first interstellar object observed passing through the Solar System. Understanding the nature of these objects will provide crucial information about the formation and evolution of planetary systems, and the chemodynamical evolution of the Galaxy as a whole. We obtained the galactic orbital parameters of this object, considering 8 different models for the Galaxy, and compared it to those of stars of different ages from the Geneva-Copenhagen Survey (GCS). Assuming that the galactic orbital evolution of this object is similar to that of stars, we applied a Bayesian analyses and used the distribution of stellar velocities, as a function of age, to obtain a probability density function for the age of 'Oumuamua. We considered two models for the age-velocity dispersion relation (AVR): the traditional power law, fitted using data from the GCS; and a model that implements a second power law for younger ages, which we fitted using a sample of 153 Open Clusters (OCs). We find that the slope of the AVR is smaller for OCs than it is for field stars. Using these AVRs, we constrained an age range of 0.01-1.87 Gyr for 'Oumuamua and characterized a most likely age ranging between 0.20-0.45 Gyr, depending on the model used for the AVR. We have studied the chemical enrichment history of the interstellar medium through an analysis of the n-dimensional stellar abundances space. This work is a non-parametric analysis of the stellar chemical abundance space. The main goal is to study the stars from their organization within this abundance space. Within this space, we seek to find clusters (in a statistical sense), that is, stars likely to share similar chemo-evolutionary history, using two methods: the hierarchical clustering and the principal component analysis. We analysed some selected abundance surveys available in the literature. For each sample, we labelled the group of stars according to its average abundance curve. In all samples, we identify the existence of a main enrichment pattern of the stars, which we call chemical enrichment flow. This flow is set by the structured and well defined mean rate at which the abundances of the interstellar medium increase, resulting from the mixture of the material ejected from the stars and stellar mass loss and interstellar medium gas. One of the main results of our analysis is the identification of subgroups of stars with peculiar chemistry. These stars are situated in regions outside of the enrichment flow in the abundance space. These peculiar stars show a mismatch in the enrichment rate of a few elements, such as Mg, Si, Sc and V, when compared to the mean enrichment rate of the other elements of the same stars. We believe the existence of these groups of stars with peculiar chemistry may be related to the accretion of planetary material onto stellar surfaces or may be due to production of the same chemical element by different nucleosynthetic sites., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, accepted by MNRAS, author scientific names were changed

The outer Galactic halo is home to a number of substructures which still have an uncertain origin, but most likely are remnants of former interactions between the Galaxy and its former satellites. Triangulum-Andromeda (TriAnd) is one of these halo substructures, found as an overdensity of 2MASS M giants. We analyzed the region of Triangulum-Andromeda using photometric data from the Ninth Data Release of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR9). By comparing the observations with simulations from the TRILEGAL Galactic model, we were able to identify and map several scattered overdensities of main sequence stars that seem to be associated with TriAnd over a large area covering $\sim 500$ deg$^2$. One of these excesses may represent a new stellar overdensity. We have analyzed high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio optical spectra of nearby FGK stars with and without detected giant planets in order to homogeneously measure their photospheric parameters, mass, age, and the abundances of volatile (C, N, and O) and refractory (Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Ba) elements. Our sample contains 309 stars from the solar neighborhood (up to the distance of 100 pc), out of which 140 are dwarfs, 29 are subgiants, and 140 are giants. The photospheric parameters are derived from the equivalent widths of Fe I and Fe II lines. Masses and ages come from the interpolation in evolutionary tracks and isochrones on the HR diagram. The abundance determination is based on the equivalent widths of selected atomic lines of the refractory elements and on the spectral synthesis of C_2, CN, C I, O I, and Na I features. We apply a set of statistical methods to analyze the abundances derived for the three subsamples. Our results show that: i) giant stars systematically exhibit underabundance in [C/Fe] and overabundance in [N/Fe] and [Na/Fe] in comparison with dwarfs, a result that is normally attributed to evolution-induced mixing processes in the envelope of evolved stars; ii) for solar analogs only, the abundance trends with the condensation temperature of the elements are correlated with age and anticorrelated with the surface gravity, which is in agreement with recent studies; iii) as in the case of [Fe/H], dwarf stars with giant planets are systematically enriched in [X/H] for all the analyzed elements, except for O and Ba (the former due to limitations of statistics), confirming previous findings in the literature that not only iron has an important relation with the planetary formation; and iv) giant planet hosts are also significantly overabundant for the same metallicity when the elements from Mg to Cu are combined together., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, 8 tables

The modification of steel (AISI 316L and AISI 4140) surface morphology and underlying inter-crystalline grains strain due to Xe$^+$ ion bombardment are reported to affect nitrogen diffusion after a pulsed plasma nitriding process. The ion bombardment induces regular nanometric patterns and increases the roughness of the material surface. The strain induced by the noble gas bombardment is observed in depths which are orders of magnitude larger than the projectiles' stopping distance. The pre-bombarded samples show peculiar microstructures formed in the nitrided layers, modifying the in-depth hardness profile. Unlike the double nitrided layer normally obtained in austenitic stainless steel by pulsed plasma nitriding process, the Xe$^+$ pre-bombardment treatment leads to a single thick compact layer. In nitrided pre-bombarded AISI 4140 steel, the diffusion zone shows long iron nitride needle-shaped precipitates, while in non-pre-bombarded samples finer precipitates are distributed in the material., Comment: 17 Pages, 8 Figures, 2 Tables

The Galaxy is in continuous elemental evolution. Since new elements produced by dying stars are delivered to the interstellar medium, the formation of new enerations of stars and planetary systems is influenced by this metal enrichment. We aim to study the role of the metallicity on the gas phase chemistry of the interstellar medium. Using a system of coupled-ordinary differential equations to model the chemical reactions, we simulate the evolution of the abundance of molecules in the gas phase for different initial interstellar elemental compositions. These varying initial elemental compositions consider the change in the "elemental abundances" predicted by a self-consistent model of the elemental evolution of the Galaxy. As far as we are aware, this is the first attempt to combine elemental evolution of the Galaxy and chemical evolution of molecular clouds. The metallicity was found to have a strong effect on the overall gas phase composition. With decreasing metallicity, the number of long carbon chains was found to increase, the time-scale on which small molecular species are increases, and the main form of oxygen changed from O and CO to O2. We investigate the chemo-kinematic properties of the Milky Way disc by exploring the first year of data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), and compare our results to smaller optical high-resolution samples in the literature, as well as results from lower resolution surveys such as GCS, SEGUE and RAVE. We start by selecting a high-quality sample in terms of chemistry ($\sim$ 20.000 stars) and, after computing distances and orbital parameters for this sample, we employ a number of useful subsets to formulate constraints on Galactic chemical and chemodynamical evolution processes in the Solar neighbourhood and beyond (e.g., metallicity distributions -- MDFs, [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] diagrams, and abundance gradients). Our red giant sample spans distances as large as 10 kpc from the Sun. We find remarkable agreement between the recently published local (d $<$ 100 pc) high-resolution high-S/N HARPS sample and our local HQ sample (d $<$ 1 kpc). The local MDF peaks slightly below solar metallicity, and exhibits an extended tail towards [Fe/H] $= -$1, whereas a sharper cut-off is seen at larger metallicities. The APOGEE data also confirm the existence of a gap in the [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] abundance diagram. When expanding our sample to cover three different Galactocentric distance bins, we find the high-[$\alpha$/Fe] stars to be rare towards the outer zones, as previously suggested in the literature. For the gradients in [Fe/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe], measured over a range of 6 $ < $ R $ <$ 11 kpc in Galactocentric distance, we find a good agreement with the gradients traced by the GCS and RAVE dwarf samples. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) is a high-resolution infrared spectroscopic survey spanning all Galactic environments (i.e., bulge, disk, and halo), with the principal goal of constraining dynamical and chemical evolution models of the Milky Way. APOGEE takes advantage of the reduced effects of extinction at infrared wavelengths to observe the inner Galaxy and bulge at an unprecedented level of detail. The survey's broad spatial and wavelength coverage enables users of APOGEE data to address numerous Galactic structure and stellar populations issues. In this paper we describe the APOGEE targeting scheme and document its various target classes to provide the necessary background and reference information to analyze samples of APOGEE data with awareness of the imposed selection criteria and resulting sample properties. APOGEE's primary sample consists of ~100,000 red giant stars, selected to minimize observational biases in age and metallicity. We present the methodology and considerations that drive the selection of this sample and evaluate the accuracy, efficiency, and caveats of the selection and sampling algorithms. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has been in operation since 2000 April. This paper presents the tenth public data release (DR10) from its current incarnation, SDSS-III. This data release includes the first spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), along with spectroscopic data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) taken through 2012 July. The APOGEE instrument is a near-infrared R~22,500 300-fiber spectrograph covering 1.514--1.696 microns. The APOGEE survey is studying the chemical abundances and radial velocities of roughly 100,000 red giant star candidates in the bulge, bar, disk, and halo of the Milky Way. DR10 includes 178,397 spectra of 57,454 stars, each typically observed three or more times, from APOGEE. Derived quantities from these spectra (radial velocities, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities) are also included.DR10 also roughly doubles the number of BOSS spectra over those included in the ninth data release. We report on the discovery of a new Milky Way companion stellar system located at (RA, Dec) = (22h10m43.15s, +14:56:58.8). The discovery was made using the eighth data release of SDSS after applying an automated method to search for overdensities in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey footprint. Follow-up observations were performed using CFHT-MegaCam, which reveal that this system is comprised of an old stellar population, located at a distance of 31.9+1.0-1.6 kpc, with a half-light radius of r_h = 7.24+1.94-1.29 pc and a concentration parameter of c = 1.55. A systematic isochrone fit to its color-magnitude diagram resulted in log(age) = 10.07+0.05-0.03 and [Fe/H] = -1.58+0.08-0.13 . These quantities are typical of globular clusters in the MW halo. The newly found object is of low stellar mass, whose observed excess relative to the background is caused by 96 +/- 3 stars. The direct integration of its background decontaminated luminosity function leads to an absolute magnitude of MV = -1.21 +/- 0.66. The resulting surface brightness is uV = 25.9 mag/arcsec2 . Its position in the M_V vs. r_h diagram lies close to AM4 and Koposov 1, which are identified as star clusters. The object is most likely a very faint star cluster - one of the faintest and lowest mass systems yet identified., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

A comprehensive study of pulsed nitriding in AISI H13 tool steel at low temperature (400{\deg}C) is reported for several durations. X-ray diffraction results reveal that a nitrogen enriched compound (Epsilon-Fe2-3N, iron nitride) builds up on the surface within the first process hour despite the low process temperature. Beneath the surface, X-ray Wavelength Dispersive Spectroscopy (WDS) in a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) indicates relatively higher nitrogen concentrations (up to 12 at.%) within the diffusion layer while microscopic nitrides are not formed and existing carbides are not dissolved. Moreover, in the diffusion layer, nitrogen is found to be dispersed in the matrix and forming nanosized precipitates. The small coherent precipitates are observed by High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) while the presence of nitrogen is confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Hardness tests show that the material hardness increases linearly with the nitrogen concentration, reaching up to 14.5 GPa in the surface while the Young Modulus remains essentially unaffected. Indeed, the original steel microstructure is well preserved even in the nitrogen diffusion layer. Nitrogen profiles show a case depth of about ~43 microns after nine hours of nitriding process. These results indicate that pulsed plasma nitriding is highly efficient even at such low temperatures and that at this process temperature it is possible to form thick and hard nitrided layers with satisfactory mechanical properties. In this paper, we study the photoinduced switching of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center between two different charge states - negative (NV-) and neutral (NV0) at liquid helium temperature. The conversion of NV- to NV0 on a single defect is experimentally proven and its rate scales quadratically with power under resonant excitation. In addition, we found that resonant excitation of the neutral NV changes the charge state, recovering its negative configuration. This type of conversion significantly improves spectral stability of NV- defect and allows high fidelity initialization of the spin qubit. A possible mechanism for ionization and recovery of the NV- defect is discussed. This study provides better understanding of the charge dynamics of the NV center, which is relevant for quantum information processing based on NV defect in diamond., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report the abundances of C, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, Nd, and Sm in 25 solar-type stars in the solar neighbourhood, and their correlations with ages, kinematics, and orbital parameters. The spectroscopic analysis, based high resolution and high S/N ratio data, was differential to the Sun and applied to atomic line EWs and to C and C2 spectral synthesis. We performed a statistical study using a tree clustering analysis, searching for groups of stars sharing similar abundance patterns. We derived Teff, log(g), and [Fe/H] with errors of 30 K, 0.13 dex, and 0.05 dex, respectively. The average error in [X/Fe] is 0.06 dex. Ages were derived from theoretical HR diagrams and memberships in kinematical moving groups. We identified four stellar groups: with over-solar abundances (<[X/H]> = +0.26 dex), under-solar abundances (<[X/H]> = -0.24 dex), and intermediate values (<[X/H]> = -0.06 and +0.06 dex) but with distinct chemical patterns. Stars sharing solar metallicity, age, and Galactic orbit possibly have non-solar abundance, an effect either of chemical heterogeneity in their natal clouds or migration. A trend of [Cu/Fe] with [Ba/Fe] seems to exist, in agreement with previous claims in the literature, and maybe also of [Sm/Fe] with [Ba/Fe]. No such correlation involving C, Na, Mn, and Zn is observed. [Mg/Fe], [Sc/Fe], and [Ti/Fe] increase with age. [Mn/Fe] and [Cu/Fe] first increase towards younger stars up to the solar age, and then decrease, a result we interpret as possibly related to time-varying yields of SN Ia and the weak s-process. [Sr/Fe], [Y/Fe], [Sr/Mg], [Y/Mg], [Sr/Zn], and [Y/Zn] linearly increase towards younger stars. [Zr/Fe], [Ce/Fe], [Nd/Fe], [Ba/Mg], [Ba/Zn], and [Sr,Y,Ba/Sm] increase but only for stars younger than the Sun. We distinguish three mechanisms of doping graphene. Density functional theory is used to show that electronegative molecule like F4-TCNQ and electropositive metals like K dope graphene p- and n-type respectively. These dopants are expected to lead to a decrease in carrier mobility arising from Coulomb scattering but without any hysteresis effects. Secondly, a novel doping mechanism is exhibited by Au which dopes bilayer graphene but not single layer. Thirdly, electrochemical doping is effected by redox reactions and can result in p-doping by humid atmospheres and n-doping by NH3 and toluene., Comment: submitted to Physica Status Solidi

In this paper we present a re-analysis of the criteria used to characterize the Peimbert classes I, IIa, IIb, III and IV, through a statistical study of a large sample of planetary nebulae previously classified according to these groups. In the original classification, it is usual to find planetary nebulae that cannot be associated with a single type; these most likely have dubious classifications into two or three types. Statistical methods can greatly contribute in providing a better characterization of planetary nebulae groups. We use the Bayes Theorem to calculate the posterior probabilities for an object to be member of each of the types I, IIa, IIb, III and IV. This calculation is particularly important for planetary nebulae that are ambiguously classified in the traditional method. The posterior probabilities are defined from the probability density function of classificatory parameters of a well-defined sample, composed only by planetary nebulae unambiguously fitted into the Peimbert types. Because the probabilities depend on the available observational data, they are conditional probabilities, and, as new observational data are added to the sample, the classification of the nebula can be improved, to take into account this new information. This method differs from the original classificatory scheme, because it provides a quantitative result of the representativity of the object within its group. We studied the relationship between the average stellar abundance of several elements and the orbital evolution of stars in the neighbourhood of the Sun, using both observational data for 325 late-type dwarfs in a volume-complete sample and simulations of the orbital diffusion. Metallicities, ages, and initial position and velocities for the simulated stars are sampled from empirical distributions of these quantities in the Milky Way. We found that that there is a relationship between the average stellar abundance of Fe, Na, Si, Ca, Ni, and Ba and the mean orbital radius of stars currently passing through the solar neighbourhood. The greater the difference between the mean orbital radius and the solar Galactocentric distance, the more deficient the star is, on average, in these chemical species. The stars that take a longer time to come from their birthplaces to arrive in the present solar neighbourhood are more likely to be more metal-poor than those that were born here. This result is a direct, independent indication that a tightly defined Galactic age-metallicity relation exists., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in the A&A

In this paper, we investigate some chemokinematical properties of the Milky Way disk, by using a sample composed by 424 late-type dwarfs. We show that the velocity dispersion of a stellar group correlates with the age of this group, according to a law proportional to t^0.26, where t is the age of the stellar group. The temporal evolution of the vertex deviation is considered in detail. It is shown that the vertex deviation does not seem to depend strongly on the age of the stellar group. Previous studies in the literature seem to not have found it due to the use of statistical ages for stellar groups, rather than individual ages. The possibility to use the orbital parameters of a star to derive information about its birthplace is investigated, and we show that the mean galactocentric radius is likely to be the most reliable stellar birthplace indicator. However, this information cannot be presently used to derive radial evolutionary constraints, due to an intrinsic bias present in all samples constructed from nearby stars. An extensive discussion of the secular and stochastic heating mechanisms commonly invoked to explain the age-velocity dispersion relation is presented. We suggest that the age-velocity dispersion relation could reflect the gradual decrease in the turbulent velocity dispersion from which disk stars form, a suggestion originally made by Tinsley and Larson (1978) and supported by several more recent disk evolution calculations. We describe first results of a spectroscopic probe of selected fields from the Grid Giant Star Survey. Multifiber spectroscopy of several hundred stars in a strip of eleven fields along delta approximately -17^{circ}, in the range 12 <~ alpha <~ 17 hours, reveals a group of 8 giants that have kinematical characteristics differing from the main field population, but that as a group maintain coherent, smoothly varying distances and radial velocities with position across the fields. Moreover, these stars have roughly the same abundance, according to their MgH+Mgb absorption line strengths. Photometric parallaxes place these stars in a semi-loop structure, arcing in a contiguous distribution between 5.7 and 7.9 kpc from the Galactic center. The spatial, kinematical, and abundance coherence of these stars suggests that they are part of a diffuse stream of tidal debris, and one roughly consistent with a wrapped, leading tidal arm of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy., Comment: 8 pages including 4 figures. We have investigated a group of stars known to have low chromospheric ages, but high kinematical ages. Isochrone, chemical and lithium ages are estimated for them. The majority of stars in this group show lithium abundances much smaller than expected for their chromospheric ages, which is interpreted as an indication of their old age. Radial velocity measurements in the literature also show that they are not close binaries. The results suggest that they can be formed from the coalescence of short-period binaries. Coalescence rates, calculated taking into account several observational data and a maximum theoretical time scale for contact, in a short-period pair, predict a number of coalesced stars similar to what we have found in the solar neighbourhood., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

A chromospheric age distribution of 552 late-type dwarfs is transformed into a star formation history by the application of scale height corrections, stellar evolutionary corrections and volume corrections. We show that the disk of our Galaxy has experienced enhanced episodes of star formation at 0-1 Gyr, 2-5 Gyr and 7-9 Gyr ago, although the reality of the latter burst is still uncertain. The star sample birthsites are distributed over a very large range of distances because of orbital diffusion, and so give an estimate of the global star formation rate. These results are compared with the metal-enrichment rate, given by the age-metallicity relation, with the expected epochs of close encounters between our Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, and with previous determinations of the star formation history. Simulations are used to examine the age-dependent smearing of the star formation history due to age uncertainties, and the broadening of the recovered features, as well as to measure the probability level that the history derived to be produced by statistical fluctuations of a constant star formation history. The age-metallicity relation of the solar neighbourhood is studied using a sample of 552 late-type dwarfs. This sample was built from the intersection of photometric catalogues with chromospheric activity surveys of the Mount Wilson group. For these stars, metallicities were estimated from uvby data, and ages were calculated from their chromospheric emission levels using a new metallicity-dependent chromospheric activity-age relation developed by Rocha-Pinto & Maciel (1998). A careful estimate of the errors in the chromospheric age is made. The errors in the chromospheric indices are shown to include partially the effects of the stellar magnetic cycles, although a detailed treatment of this error is still beyond our knowledge. It is shown that the results are not affected by the presence of unresolved binaries in the sample. We derive an age-metallicity relation which confirms the mean trend found by previous workers. The mean metallicity shows a slow, steady increase with time, amounting at least 0.56 dex in 15 Gyr. The initial metallicity of the disk is around -0.70 dex, in agreement with the G dwarf metallicity distribution. According to our data, the intrinsic cosmic dispersion in metal abundances is around 0.13 dex, a factor of two smaller than that found by Edvardsson et al. (1993). We show that chromospheric ages are compatible with isochrone ages, within the expected errors, so that the difference in the scatter cannot be caused by the accuracy of our ages and metallicities. The consistency of the metallicity distributions of F, G and K dwarfs is studied. We present a new metallicity distribution for K dwarfs using metallicities determined from uvby photometry. There is a remarkable paucity of metal-poor K dwarfs in analogy with the G dwarf problem. We show that late-type dwarfs have consistent metallicity distributions. We also propose preliminary corrections to these distributions to take into account the contamination of the uvby indices due to the chromospheric activity in these stars, since around 30% of the nearby late-type dwarfs have active chromospheres. We consider the possibility that the metallicity distribution of cooler stars may be different from that of the hotter stars due to (i) metal-enhanced star formation and (ii) a metallicity bias in the catalogue of nearby stars. We conclude that these hypotheses are unlikely to produce important differences in the metallicity distributions of late-type dwarfs., Comment: Latex file, 11 pages, 10 figures. We show that there is a relationship between the age excess, defined as the difference between the stellar isochrone and chromospheric ages, and the metallicity as measured by the index [Fe/H] for late-type dwarfs. The chromospheric age tends to be lower than the isochrone age for metal-poor stars, and the opposite occurs for metal-rich objects. We suggest that this could be an effect of neglecting the metallicity dependence of the calibrated chromospheric emission-age relation. We propose a correction to account for this dependence. We also investigate the metallicity distributions of these stars, and show that there are distinct trends according to the chromospheric activity level. Inactive stars have a metallicity distribution which resembles the metallicity distribution of solar neighbourhood stars (Rocha-Pinto & Maciel 1996), while active stars appear to be concentrated in an activity strip on the log R'HK - [Fe/H] diagram. We provide some explanations for these trends, and show that the chromospheric emission-age relation probably has different slopes on the two sides of the Vaughan-Preston gap., Comment: text file (9 pages) plus 10 postscript figures.
