- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

This study aimed to evaluate the inclusion of porcine mucosa hydrolysate (PMH) as a flavor stimulant in diets for juvenile tilapia. For this, 12 juvenile tilapia were used, distributed in 12 aquariums, where video recordings were performed to obtain data on attractiveness and palatability: (a) time of capture of the first pellet; (b) rejection of the pellets by the tilapia; (c) approach without ingestion; (d) percentage of ingestion; (e) time taken for the tilapia to consume all the pellets. Six treatments were evaluated in comparison with the control, namely without inclusion of PMH and from one to five percent of inclusion of PMH. The treatment with 1% inclusion presented the highest intake of pellets and, for the other variables, no differences were observed between the evaluated treatments, however, compared to the control, there was a greater decrease in the consumption of the treatment with 3% inclusion. Thus, the inclusion of 1% of PMH is suggested to improve the palatability of the ration offered.

Aquaculture is the production of organisms that present partial or total development in water, generating an effluent rich in nutrients. The use of artificial foods is common in production, but they are highly nutritious in nitrogen and phosphorus. Such nutrients are sources of energy for aquatic plants, such as macrophytes. The use of macrophytes for nutrient absorption is common in some treatment systems such as wetlands. The objective was to carry out a systemic review and meta-analysis of the efficiency of the use of floating macrophytes for the treatment of aquaculture effluent. The platforms used were Capes Journals, Scopus and Web of Science. From the articles found, data were collected from authors, year of publication, published scientific journal, macrophyte species, characteristics evaluated in the effluent and place of study. Means and standard deviations were used for statistical analysis, through the standardized mean difference (SMD), method for performing the meta-analysis. Only 24 articles were included in the systemic review, but only 9 articles were able to extract the necessary information to carry out the meta-analysis. Among the chemical properties, pH was the most measured, being present in 21 articles. The most common macrophyte genera were Eichhornia, Pistia, Lemna, Salvinia and Azolla. Only the meta-analysis of orthophosphate showed no statistical difference, while total nitrogen, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total inorganic nitrogen, total phosphorus and orthophosphate were significant. It can be seen that macrophytes have a greater affinity for certain nutrients. As plataformas utilizadas foram Periódicos Capes, Scopus e Web of Science.

The present study evaluated the hypothesis that the fish assemblage of Governador Pedro Viriato Parigot de Souza Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir (Capivari) is longitudinally structured, forming two or three distinct zones. Fish and abiotic variables were collected quarterly between January 2004 and October 2008 at three locations (dam, intermediate and backwater) along the reservoir. A total of 38,085 fishes were captured, which were summarized with non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS) and compared longitudinally with the permutational multiresponse procedure (MRPP). The occurrence of species distributed in each location was also analyzed. Next, the gradients of variation on fish assemblage structure associated with the abiotic variables were extracted under the linear restriction imposed by them, through the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The differences between pure and restricted gradients were evaluated using the Mantel test. The NMS analyses and the MRPP test showed that the pure gradients of fish assemblage structure were longitudinally differentiated, the backwater being different from the others, with a greater preference of species for this location. CCA analyses demonstrated influence of water transparency, pH and dissolved oxygen, so as NMS results. It was concluded that fish assemblage structure in Capivari reservoir presented a zonation pattern, forming two distinct zones in the longitudinal gradient, where was verified that the species has a greater preference for the riverine zone (backwater), mainly influenced by the lower values of water transparency and higher levels of pH and dissolved oxygen.

- Abstract
Landscape changes and hydrologic alterations associated with dam construction have greatly hindered reproductive success and the recruitment of migratory species. However, little is known about the flow conditions that are necessary for the reproductive success of migrators. We aimed to analyze one of the important migrants of the Paraná River, the curimba, Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836), to determine the minimum velocities necessary for egg drift and analyze the behavior of larvae at different flow velocities. Thus, we experimentally evaluated the behavior of eggs and larvae released in a drift simulator channel (DSC) under four flow velocities. Additionally, we investigate the swimming ability of larvae in relation to certain morphometric measures of their bodies. We also performed morphometry and calculations of larval body and fin proportions to determine which structures influence swimming ability. The results indicated that environments with flow velocities greater than 0.081 m s-1 were favorable for egg drift and increased the chances of successful transport of eggs to downstream areas. We also observed that soon after hatching, the larvae positioned themselves against the flow, indicating that they had a perception of position and orientation. The larvae were able to maintain and disperse against the flow within the channel 32h after hatching at all velocities, which was mainly due to the development of pectoral and caudal fins that were actively involved in the swimming process, as well as the reduction in the dimensions of the yolk sac, which reduced drag. Objective: This study sought to assess the influence of prone positioning on the stress of newborn premature infants through the measurement of the salivary cortisol concentration and the evaluation of physiological and behavioral responses before and after changes in body positioning. Methods: Saliva samples were collected from newborn infants at two different times: the first (corresponding to the baseline) after a period of 40 minutes during which the infants were not subjected to any manipulation and were placed in the lateral or supine position, and the second 30 minutes after placement in the prone position. Variables including heart rate, respiratory rate, peripheral oxygen saturation, and the Brazelton sleep score were recorded before, during, and at the end of the period in the prone position. Results: The sample comprised 16 newborn premature infants (56.3% male) with a gestational age between 26 and 36 weeks, postnatal age between 1 and 33 days, birth weight of 935 to 3,050g, and weight at the time of intervention of 870 to 2,890g. During the intervention, six participants breathed room air, while the remainder received oxygen therapy. The median salivary cortisol concentration was lower in the prone position compared to baseline (0.13 versus 0.20; p=0.003), as was the median Brazelton sleep score (p=0.02). The average respiratory rate was lower after the intervention (54.88±7.15 versus 60±7.59; p=0.0004). The remainder of the investigated variables did not exhibit significant variation. Conclusion: Prone positioning significantly reduced the salivary cortisol level, respiratory rate, and Brazelton sleep score, suggesting a correlation between prone positioning and reduction of stress in preterm infants.

The most important and, usually, the most difficult problem in fisheries sciences assessment is the relationship between stock and recruitment. The term ‘recruitment’ is referred in this study as the abundance of the earliest age at which a cohort can effectively be estimated. The process of recruitment is complex, and determined by density-dependent and density-independent factors. Usually, stock-recruitment is the empirical relationship between reproductive stock and the number of recruits produced. There are several suggestions to express the stock-recruitment relationship, and an example of such attempts is the models of Beverton and Holt, Ricker and Shepherd. These models were fitted by non-linear procedure to Serrasalmus marginatus and S. maculates populations from the Baía River. The aim of the study was to determine the best model for stock-recruitment relationship and the main mechanism related to it for both species. Competition appeared to be the limiting factor for recruitment. Shepherd (S. marginatus) and Ricker (S. maculates) were the models that presented the best fit Um dos problemas de maior relevância e complexidade na avaliação da biologia pesqueira é a relação entre estoque e recrutamento.

Plasticity is defined as a variation in the phenotypic expression of a genotype that occurs in response to special conditions that increase the capacity of an individual to survive and reproduce under those conditions. The present study tested the effect of different population densities on the submerged and free floating leaves of Salvinia herzogii. Individuals of this free-floating macrophyte were collected in the Paranapanema River and brought to the laboratory where they were conditioned in tanks with three different densities. A significant reduction in the leaves width that were under medium and low densities was observed. We inferred that S. herzogii was able to alter the morphology of the leaves in response to density, contemplating in an evolutionary strategy that increases the ability to compete for resources A plasticidade é definida como uma variação na expressão fenotípica de um genótipo que ocorre em resposta a condições especiais e que aumenta a capacidade do indivíduo de sobreviver e reproduzir sob essas condições.

The purpose of this dissertation was to construct predictive models based in panel data, a framework little considered in ecology. This analysis considers the functional relations between explanatory and response variables, controlling processes related to spatial and temporal dimensions of the data. It has the advantage over traditional methods employed in ecology because it allows the use of temporal data collected simultaneously in several locations. This leads to increase in degrees of freedom and in the amplitude of variation of considered variables, due to the use of habitats with distinct characteristics. Panel data analysis may also control autoregressive processes and heterogeneous variances among spatial units, favoring robust estimates of parameters even in the presence of these problems. Therefore, this analysis was used to build predictive models to describe the process of regulation of the guild piscivore and the population of P. lineatus in the upper Paraná River floodplain. In the first paper, the central focus was the prediction of the abundance of piscivores as function of flood intensity during the spawning period. This variable was chosen because it is possible to be manipulated, through changes in the operation of dams located upstream from the plain. However, several other factors may potentially affect abundances of this guild, such as prey availability, water temperature, pH, Secchi depth and electrical conductivity, as well as the closure of Porto Primavera Dam. All these variables were inserted in the model. In the second paper, a model was built to predict the abundance of Prochilodus lineatus. The abundance of this species is sharply decreasing in the Paraná River. The same variables considered in the first paper were also used here. However, it was added the abundance of piscivores to index predation on P. lineatus and the abundance of iliophagues to index competition with P. lineatus. In both papers, it was predict that long lasting floods (almost three months) with minimum water level of 450 cm in the fluviometric station of Porto São José, are necessary to maintain the integrity of the piscivore guild and the population of P. lineatus. 63 f

- Abstract
Among the animal protein production activities, world aquaculture has the highest growth rate, and is mainly practiced in ground-excavated ponds. However, with great productivity comes the concern about the increasing generation of effluents, mainly at the moment of fish removal, when high loads of organic matter and nutrients are released into the environment. Thus, this study evaluated the quality of effluents through the principal component analysis (PCA) in samples from nurseries of different sizes in four sampling scenarios. Analysis was performed during the process of fish removal in Nile Tilapia intensive fish farming sites at various properties in the Western region of Paraná State in Brazil. Twenty physical and chemical parameters were analyzed in each effluent sample using standard methods of effluent analysis. The results indicated that the concentrations of Suspended Solids (SS), Total Solids (TS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Total Phosphorus (TP) increased significantly at the end of the fish removal process, which caused a progressive deterioration in the effluent released into the environment. Hence, regulating water management during cultivation, as well as mitigating the effects of effluent generated in fish removal, is indispensable to maintain the legality, profitability, and sustainability of this sector. - Abstract
The biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems in developing countries faces several limitations, especially related to gathering resources. The present study aimed at comparing the responses of fish and benthic macroinvertebrates to environmental change, to identify which group best indicates the differences between reference and impacted streams in southern Brazil. We determined reference and impacted sites based on physical and chemical variables of the water. For the analysis and comparison of biological responses, we calculated 22 metrics and submitted them to a discriminant analysis. We selected from this analysis only six metrics, which showed that the two studied assemblages respond differently to environmental change. A larger number of metrics were selected for macroinvertebrates than for fish in the separate analysis. The metrics selected for macroinvertebrates in the pooled analysis (i.e., fish and macroinvertebrates together) were different from those selected in the separate analysis for macroinvertebrates alone. However, the metrics selected for fish in the pooled analysis were the same selected in the separate analysis for fish alone. The macroinvertebrate assemblage was more effective for distinguishing reference from impacted sites. We suggest the use of macroinvertebrates as bioindicators of Neotropical streams, especially in situations in which time and money are short. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background. We compare the incidence of delirium before and after extubation and identify the risk factors and possible predictors for the occurrence of delirium in this group of patients. Methods. Patients weaned frommechanical ventilation (MV) and extubated were included. The assessment of delirium was conducted using the confusion assessmentmethod for the ICU and completed twice per day until discharge fromthe intensive care unit. Results. Sixty-four patients were included in the study, 53.1% of whompresented with delirium. The risk factorsof deliriumwere age (P = 0.01), SOFAscore (P = 0.03), APACHEscore (P = 0.01), and a neurological cause of admission (P = 0.01). The majority of the patients began with delirium before or on the day of extubation. Hypoactive delirium was the most common form. Conclusion. Acute (traumatic or medical) neurological injuries were important risk factors in the development of delirium. During the weaning process, delirium developed predominantly before or on the same day of extubation and was generally hypoactive (more difficult to detect). Therefore, while planning early prevention strategies, attention must be focused on neurological patients who are receiving MV and possibly even on patients who are still under sedation. Thus, the present research had the general objective of elaborate a proposal for environmental zoning, together with biodiversity management programs. Its development of the proposal took place through three stages: i) the bibliographic review; ii) elaboration and organization of the comparative results on a time scale with images from the LANDASAT 5 satellites of the years 2011, 2016 and 2021, through vector and matrix data in the program of QGis georeferencing for land use and land cover; and iii) the proposal of environmental zoning together with biodiversity management programs such as the environment management program, sustainable rural and connectivity programs for areas of environmental importance, such as the feasibility of implementing fauna passages, since the Campos Gerais National Park, has two fragments due to PR 513 that is inserted within the limits of the CGNP. The insertion of a Mosaic of Conservation Units (UCs) of Conservation Units close to the CGNP, would collaborate for the insertion of other biodiversity conservation programs such as ecological corridors and the creation of Private Reserves of Natural Heritage (PRNH) of private areas close to the park that could compose the proposed Mosaic of Conservation Units. The results obtained show an intense variation in the use and cover of the soil in the last ten years, with the decrease of the soil cover of the mixed abrophilous forest and of the non-forest soil cover, strongly influenced by the development of anthropic activities of agricultural predominance.

The interviews were carried out in the ports of Piúma, from July 2017 to June 2018, totaling 163 questionnaires. Data collection focused on the six ports of greatest fishing activity distributed in the municipality. In this study we seek to describe the fishing gear practiced associating them with the captured species. The fishing gear recorded were pargueira, surface longline, midwater and bottom, gillnet, trawl and seine. Fishing gear aimed at target species proved to be very specific and always aimed at those of greater commercial value, with the exception of the bottom longline, which showed a similar capture rate for several species, making it difficult to identify a target species for this gear. fishing. The result of this study drew attention in relation to the capture of elasmobranch in a certain fishing gear, before this exposed data were analyzed referring to the effort and the capture of swordfish (Xiphias gladius), mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) and blue shark (Prionace glauca ), obtained from fishing landings by the artisanal mid-water longline fleet operating in Southeast Brazil. Comparing the percentage contribution of these species, it is observed that swordfish presented the highest contribution (55%). Mannequin was the second species with the highest representation in terms of total weight landed (24%). The blue shark presented 9% of contribution, together the sharks represented about 33% of the total captured. This high catch of sharks as incidental fishing may be related to the type of hook used by the fleet associated with the steel cable. In order for sustainable targeted fishing to occur, it is important that some attitudes are taken, the way in which the mid-water longline is used may need some adjustments in the form of action so that species in endangered status can recover without the pressure of fishing continues to happen implicitly.
