Abstract

The PSI Positron Production (P$^3$ or P-cubed) experiment is a demonstrator for a e+ source and capture system with potential to improve the state-of-the-art e+ yield by an order of magnitude. The experiment is driven by the FCC-ee injector study and will be hosted in the SwissFEL facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. This paper is an overview of the P$^3$ design at an advanced stage, with a particular emphasis on a novel e+ capture system and its associated beam dynamics. Additionally, a concept for the experiment diagnostics is presented, as well as the key points of the ongoing installation works.

2. Application of a PWFA to an X-ray FEL

Abstract

There is a growing demand for X-ray Free-electron lasers (FELs) in various science fields, in particular for those with short pulses, larger photon fluxes and shorter wavelengths. The level of X-ray power and the pulse energy depend on the amount of electron bunch energy. Increasing the latter will increase the power of the radiating X-rays. Using numerical simulations we explore the possibility of using a plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA) scheme to increase the electron beam energy of an existing FEL facility without significantly increasing the accelerator length. In this paper we use parameters of the SwissFEL beam. The simulations are carried out in 2D cylindrical symmetry using the code OSIRIS. Initial results show an energy gain of ~2 GeV after propagation of 0.5 m in the plasma with a relative energy spread of ~1%., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, 2nd European Advanced Accelerator Concepts Workshop

Abstract

The international FCC study group published in 2019 a Conceptual Design Report for an electron-positron collider with a centre-of-mass energy from 90 to 365 GeV with a beam currents of up to 1.4 A per beam. The high beam current of this collider create challenging requirements on the injection chain and all aspects of the linac need to be carefully reconsidered and revisited, including the injection time structure. The entire beam dynamics studies for the full linac, damping ring and transfer lines are major activities of the injector complex design. A key point is that any increase of positron production and capture efficiency reduces the cost and complexity of the driver linac, the heat and radiation load of the converter system, and increases the operational margin. In this paper we will give an overview of the status of the injector complex design and introduce the new layout that has been proposed by the study group working in the context of the CHART collaboration. The prototype of the novel X-band TDS, the Polarizable X-band (PolariX) TDS, was fabricated at PSI following the high-precision tuning-free production process developed for the C-band Linac of the SwissFEL project. Bead-pull RF measurements were also performed at PSI to verify, in particular, that the polarization of the dipole fields does not have any rotation along the structure. The high-power test was performed at CERN and now the TDS is at DESY and has been installed in FLASHForward, where the first streaking experience with beam will be accomplished. Abstract

A theoretical technique for determining the dispersion relation, the electromagnetic field components, and the quality factor of a dielectric-loaded nonperiodic corrugated waveguide is presented for the case of azimuthally symmetric TM waves. The Floquet theorem is used to express the field distribution in the vacuum region, while an eigenfunction expansion is employed in each dielectric region, with the appropriate boundary conditions applied at the interfaces, leading to an infinite system of equations. This system is solved numerically by truncation, while the convergence of the solution is examined with the number of spatial harmonics. Based on this formulation, a numerical code, called FISHBONE-TM, is developed and its results are compared with those obtained with an established code (CASCADE) based on the scattering-matrix method. A collaboration between DESY, PSI and CERN has been established with the aim of developing and building an advanced X-Band transverse deflector structure (TDS) with the new feature of providing variable polarization of the deflecting force. As this innovative CERN design requires very high manufacturing precision to guarantee highest azimuthal symmetry of the structure to avoid the deterioration of the polarization of the streaking field, the high-precision tuning-free assembly procedures developed at PSI for the SwissFEL C-band accelerating structures will be used for the manufacturing. Such a TDS will be installed downstream of the undulators of the soft X-ray beamline of SwissFEL and thanks to the variable polarization of the TDS, it will be possible to perform a complete characterization of the 6D phase-space. Abstract

The SwissFEL Injector Test Facility (SITF) has been equipped with numerous prototype diagnostics (BPMs, screen monitors, wire scanners, optical synchrotron radiation monitor, compression (THz) monitor, bunch arrival time monitor, EO spectral decoding monitor, charge and loss monitor) specifically designed for the low charge SwissFEL operation modes. The design of the diagnostics systems and recent measurement results will be presented.

The designed TDS has the new feature of providing variable polarization of the deflecting field**. The possibility of changing the orientation of the streaking field of the TDS to an arbitrary azimuthal angle allows for 3D characterization of the phase space using tomographic methods***. Moreover the complete 6D characterization of the beam phase space is possible by combining this technique with quadrupole scans and a dipole spectrometer. As this new cavity design requires very high manufacturing precision to guarantee highest azimuthal symmetry of the structure to avoid the deterioration of the polarization of the streaking field, the high precision tuning-free assembly procedures developed at PSI for the SwissFEL C-band accelerating structures will be used for the manufacturing****.
