International audience; Many studies have shown the impact of emotion on cognition (Damasio, 1994), however these influences remain ambiguous. The contradictions may be explained by a lack of experimental control (emotional induction, objective clues on emotional states...) but also by the existence of complex cross-influences between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a major substratum of executive functions (EFs) and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, an area strongly connected to the limbic system. This work aimed at gaining a more precise view of the links between emotion and EFs, utilizing an experimental protocol that used avatars for a well-controlled emotional induction, measurements of the autonomic nervous system activity as evidence of the emotional state (cardiovascular and pupillary responses) and a neuropsychological test battery (dynamic reasoning and deductive reasoning tasks) for the detection of EFs variations in response to emotion. The experimental data showed that positive emotion (joy) led to a performance decrease during both tasks, together with physiological variations. These counterintuitive results showed that positive mood can impair executive functioning in our tasks. In addition, our results highlighted the lack of learning effects on deductive performance.

Unlike professional pilots who are limited by the FAA's age rule, no age limit is defined in general aviation (GA). Some studies revealed significant aging issues on accident rates but these results are criticized. Our overall goal is to study how the effect of age on executive functions (EFs), high level cognitive abilities, impacts on the flying performance in GA pilots. This study relies on three components: EFs assessment, pilot characteristics (age, flight experience), and the navigation performance on a flight simulator. The results showed that contrary to age, reasoning, working memory (WM) and total flight experience were predictive of the flight performance. These results suggest that "cognitive age", derived in this study by the cognitive evaluation, is a better mean than "chronological age" consideration to predict the ability to pilot, in particular because of the inter-individual variability of aging impact and the beneficial effect of the flight experience.

The analysis of aeronautical accidents highlights the fact that some airline pilots demonstrate a trend to land whereas the approach is not well stabilized. This behavior seems to be the consequence of various factors, including financial issues. Our hypothesis is that financial constraints modulate the brain circuitry of emotion and reward, in particular via the interactions between two prefrontal structures: the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(DLPFC), main center of the executive functions (EFs), high level cognitive abilities, and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC), structure linked with the limbic system, major substratum of emotional processes. In our experiment, participants performed a simplified task of landing in which the level of uncertainty and the financial incentive were manipulated. A preliminary behavioral experiment (n = 12) was conducted. A similar second experiment using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is in progress and a case study only is reported here. The behavioral data showed that the participants made more risky decision to land in the financial incentive condition in comparison to the neutral condition, where no financial incentive was delivered. This was particularly true when the uncertainty was high. The functional neuroimaging results showed that the reasoning performed in neutral condition resulted in enhanced activity in DLPFC. On the contrary, under the influence of the financial incentive, VMPFC activity was increased. These results showed the effectiveness of the financial incentive to bias decision-making toward a more risky and less rational behavior from a safety point of view. Functional neuroimaging data showed a shift from cold to hot reasoning in presence of the financial incentive, suggesting that pilot erroneous trend to land could be explained by a temporary perturbation of the decision-making process due to the negative emotional consequences associated with the go-around.

This work aims at gaining a more precise view of the links between emotion and EFs thanks to an experimental protocol that uses Virtual Reality (avatars) for a controlled emotional conditioning, measurements of the autonomous nervous system (ANS) as evidence of the emotional variations and a neuropsychological test battery for the detection of EFs variations, especially reasoning. The battery’s major tasks consist in deductive reasoning and reasoning in dynamic situations. The experimental data show that positive conditioning leads to a performance decrease (in agreement with Phillips et al. (2002a)), together with physiological variations (cardiac and pupillary activity). Moreover negative conditioning leads to ineffective actions: more actions (Dynamic task), more quickly (Deductive task) with no performance variation. These results may have applications in neuropsychology, for the assessment and the rehabilitation of patients (Mateer et al. 2005) and in neuroergonomics in the field of complex working situations where emotions may cause accidents (e.g. potential source of air crashes, Dehais et al. 2003).

International audience; This work proposes a formal modelling of categorisation processes attempting at simulating the way information is categorised by neural populations in the human brain. The formalism mainly relies on a similarity-based approach to categorisation. It involves weighted rules that use inference and fusion techniques borrowed from fuzzy logic. The approach is illustrated by a simulation of the McGurck effect where the combination of contradictory auditory and visual stimuli creates an auditory perceptive illusion.

Induced emotions and impact on reasoning and decision-making : contribution of virtual reality and autonomous nervous system measurements

Modeling explicitly the links between cognitive functions and networks of cerebral areas is necessitated both by the understanding of the clinical outcomes of brain lesions and by the interpretation of activation data provided by functional neuroimaging techniques. At this global level of representation, the human brain can be considered as a dynamic biological system, that can be best modeled by a functional causal network. Our modeling approach is based on the anatomical connectivity of cerebral regions, the information processing within cerebral areas and the causal influences that connected regions exert on each other. The information processing within a region is implemented by a causal network of functional primitives that are the interpretation of integrated biological properties. We show with an example that this explicit modeling approach allows the formulation and the simulation of functional and physiological assumptions., La compréhension des conséquences cliniques de lésions cérébrales et l’interprétation de données d’activation fournies par les techniques de neuroimagerie fonctionnelle nécessitent la modélisation explicite des liens existant entre les fonctions cognitives et les réseaux d’aires. A ce niveau global de représentation, le cerveau humain peut être considéré comme un système dynamique biologique, qui peut être modélisé de manière optimale par un réseau causal fonctionnel. Notre approche de modélisation est basée sur la connectivité anatomique des régions cérébrales, sur le traitement de l’information à l’intérieur des aires cérébrales et sur les influences causales que les régions connectées exercent les unes sur les autres. Le traitement de l’information dans une région est implémenté par un réseau causal de primitives fonctionnelles qui sont l’interprétation de propriétés biologiques intégrées. Nous montrons avec un exemple que cette approche de modélisation explicite permet la formulation et la simulation d’hypothèses fonctionnelles et physiologiques.

National audience; La connaissance des liens entre structure cérébrale et fonctions cognitives est nécessaire à la compréhension des troubles comportementaux observés chez les patients souffrant de lésions focales ou diffuses. Chez l’être humain, l’étude de ces liens a été abordée par les observations cliniques et, plusrécemment par les études en activation qui permettent de mesurer, grâce aux techniques de neuro-imagerie fonctionnelle, l’activité cérébrale du sujet sain ou du patient, lors de la réalisation d’une tâche cognitive. Si de nombreux résultats suggèrent que le support neurologique des fonctions cognitives est constitué de réseaux à grande échelle d’aires corticales et de régions sous-corticales fonctionnellement interconnectées, l’existence d’une correspondance biunivoque entre les réseaux activés et les fonctions cognitives est controversée. Les informations sur la localisation de l’activité cérébrale et/ou sur la chronologie des événements cérébraux apportées par l’imagerie fonctionnelle cérébrale doivent donc être interprétées à l’aide de modèles des mécanismes de traitement et de propagation de l’information cérébrale dans les réseaux à grande échelle. Cette modélisation a été abordée par deux communautés scientifiques. L’interprétation des données d‘activation par les chercheurs en neuro-imagerie est fondée sur des techniques statistiques. Elle a évolué, au fil du temps, de la recherche d’une ségrégation fonctionnelle des régions activées (hypothèse localisationniste), à la détermination de leur connectivité fonctionnelle (leurs associations fonctionnelles) et à l’étude de leur connectivité effective (intégration du rôle des connexions anatomiques sur la propagation de l’activation). La seconde communauté, celle des spécialistes en neurosciences «computationnelles», a largement utilisé les modèles connexionnistes pour modéliser les liens entre structure cérébrale et fonctions cognitives. La fonction peut, dans ces modèles, émerger d’une architecture cognitivement fondée et dont les modules sont plaqués sur des structures cérébrales, ou, à l’opposé, être lecomportement global émergeant d’une architecture biologiquement plausible, représentant les mécanismes neurophysiologiques de populations neuronales très localisées. Le niveau d’interprétation requis par la neuro-imagerie fonctionnelle, a fait émerger unetroisième voie. Le cerveau y est considéré comme un réseau de régions fonctionnelles anatomiquement interconnectées, chaque région étant un centre de traitement de l’information. L’information cérébrale est définie comme l’abstraction du signal généré parl’activité des neurones constituant la région et le processus cognitif est l’interprétation explicite de la fonction émergeant de leur activité. La fonction cognitive naît de l’interaction des différentes régions, toutes anatomiquement et fonctionnellement différentes. Elle est contrainte par les connexions anatomiques et les processus de traitement de l’information inter et intra-régions. MITIC (Modélisation Intégrée du Traitement de l’Information Cérébrale) est l’approche développée à l’INSERM U455 pour ce niveau de modélisation. Elle propose le paradigme de connectivité causale, fondé sur des réseaux causaux fonctionnels propageant une information imprécise. En conclusion, nous montrerons comment cette approche, issue de l’Intelligence Artificielle, étend le concept de connectivité effective et comment elle est complémentaire des modèles connexionnistes

Classiquement, les interactions homme - système artificiel (IHSA) ont été étudiées par le seul intermédiaire des changements du comportement humain face à une variation du système. Si cette approche a permis de faire progresser les IHSA, surtout lorsque les observations débouchaient sur de la modélisation descriptive, un pan important de l'interaction reste néanmoins méconnu. En effet, alors que, par exemple dans l'aéronautique militaire, les contraintes physiologiques étaient prises en compte (ex : voile noir), les contraintes cognitives créées par le fonctionnement du cerveau étaient largement méconnues. Dans cette perspective, l'erreur humaine devient un "symptôme" des carences du système. Une approche originale et innovante pour traiter la problématique des interactions homme-système est d'utiliser les outils et les concepts des neurosciences intégratives et de la neuropsychologie. Les travaux de ces disciplines, basées sur l'étude du substrat des mécanismes cérébraux des fonctions cognitives, ont fait progresser les connaissances sur la compréhension des interactions de l'homme avec son environnement. Ces résultats scientifiques suscitent depuis peu l'intérêt pour les facteurs humains et ont donné très récemment naissance à un nouveau courant aux Etats-Unis : la neuroergonomie. C'est dans cette démarche de neuroergonomie que nous avons tenté de mieux comprendre la similarité de certains troubles des fonctions exécutives (FE), capacités cognitives de haut niveau, qui apparaissent chez le sujet diminué (pathologie neurologique, manque de sommeil, prise de certains médicaments etc.) et chez le pilote sain en situation dégradée. En effet, les erreurs de pilotage peuvent être, dans certains cas, attribuées à des perturbations temporaires des FE. Ces constatations plaident en faveur de l'hypothèse de mécanismes cérébraux communs suggérant l'existence d'un continuum cognitif (Pastor, 1999), des performances intellectuelles optimales à un fonctionnement très dégradé, proche de celui retrouvé dans la pathologie. Nous avons réalisé une première étude visant à comprendre l'influence du risque et de la récompense sur la prise de décision en aéronautique, en utilisant un protocole de neuroéconomie, des mesures psychophysiologiques et l'IRMf. Les résultats préliminaires de neuroimagerie indiquent que le passage de la prise de décision "à froid" vers la prise de décision "à chaud" se traduit par un basculement préfrontal dorsolateral (siège des FE) vers des activations préfrontales ventromédianes (aire connectée aux régions émotionnelles du cerveau). Ce basculement était accompagné d'une augmentation du rythme cardiaque, signe de l'effet émotionnel provoqué par la récompense. Nous avons également mené une étude afin de détecter les perturbations subtiles des FE au cours du vieillissement normal pour définir des indices prédictifs de la capacité à piloter dans l'aviation générale où aucune limite d'âge n'existe. Les résultats ont mis en évidence la grande vulnérabilité de certaines FE aux effets de l'âge et, par ailleurs, que les capacités de raisonnement, de mémoire de travail mais aussi l'expérience de vol et le niveau d'impulsivité trait étaient associés à la performance de pilotage et à l'erreur décisionnelle. Enfin, nous avons opérationnalisé nos résultats par des expérimentations réalisées en vol réel en employant des mesures oculométriques. L'étude a montré la fiabilité du système à collecter les prises d'informations visuelles des pilotes. La dilatation pupillaire semblait également pointer certains effets du stress et de la charge cognitive. Toutes ces recherches illustrent la capacité de la neuroergonomie à nourrir en retour les disciplines dont elle émerge, notamment les facteurs humains. Traditionally, the human-system interactions (HIS) have been studied through the modification of the human behavior in response to system variations. Although this approach has opened the way to great progresses in HIS framework, especially when observations led to descriptive modeling, an important part of the interaction remains unknown. Indeed, while, for instance in military aeronautics, the physiological constraints were taken into account (eg. grey-out), the cognitive constraints inherent to the brain functioning were largely unknown. In this perspective, human error becomes a symptom of the system deficiency. An innovative and original approach to cope with the problematic of the HIS is to use the tools and concepts of the integrative neurosciences and of the neuropsychology. These researches, based upon the study of the neural substrate of the cognitive mechanisms, have made the knowledge related to the man interaction with his environment grow. These scientific results arouse human factor interest and generated a new discipline in the USA: neuroergonomics. In this framework, we tried to better understand the similarity of some impairment of the executive functions (EFs) which are high level cognitive abilities that appear within the diminished subject (neurological pathology, sleep deprivation, effects of some medications etc.) and within the healthy pilot facing degraded conditions. Indeed, piloting errors may be, in some cases, attributed to temporary perturbations of the EFs. These findings plead in favor of the hypothesis of common cerebral mechanisms and suggest the existence of a cognitive continuum, spanning from optimal intellectual performances to a degraded functioning, as found in pathological subjects. We have performed a first study aiming at understanding the cross influences of the risk and the reward on decision making in aeronautics. This experiment has involved psychophysiological measure, neuroimaging tools (fMRI) and a neuroeconomics experimental protocol. The neuroimaging preliminary results point out that the shift from "cold" reasoning to "hot" reasoning has resulted in a transfer from dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (main center of the EFs) activations toward ventromedial prefrontal cortex (strongly connected to emotional brains areas) activations. This shift was associated with an increase heart rate, sign of the emotional impact of the reward. We have also conducted a research to assess the subtle perturbations of the EFs during normal aging so as to identify predictive clues of the ability to pilot in general aviation, where no age limit is defined. The results showed a stronger vulnerability of EFs to the aging effects and, besides, reasoning, working memory abilities and also flight experience and trait impulsivity were related to piloting performance and poor decision making. Finally, we have operationalized our results by experimentations carried out in real flight with oculometric means. The study revealed the feasibility of collecting visual information taking of pilots in real flight, and the pupil dilation indicated stress and mental load effects. All theses researches illustrate the capacity of neuroergonomics to grow beyond the disciplines from which it emerges, in particular human factors.

The understanding and the prediction of the clinical outcomes of focal or degenerative cerebral lesions, as well as the assessment of rehabilitation procedures, necessitate knowing the cerebral substratum of cognitive or sensorimotor functions. This is achieved by activation studies, where subjects are asked to perform a specific task while data of their brain functioning are obtained through functional neuroimaging techniques. Such studies, as well as animal experiments, have shown that sensorimotor or cognitive functions are the offspring of the activity of large-scale networks of anatomically connected cerebral regions. However, no one-to-one correspondence between activated networks and functions can be found. Furthermore, apparently conflicting activation data can only be explained by understanding how the activation of large-scale networks derives from cerebral information processing mechanisms. At this level, cerebral mechanisms are the synthesis of more basic neurobiological, neurophysiological or neuropsychological processes. They can only be approached with the help of explicit computational models, based on the knowledge of more basic processes. In this work, we aim at defining a new and flexible formalism allowing building such models, for a better interpretation of cerebral functional images. It is based on dynamic Bayesian networks, a causal, probabilistic and graphical modelling approach. The brain is viewed as a network of anatomically connected functional areas. Each area is a processing unit which is represented by a set of nodes in the dynamic Bayesian network. In the formalism, the information processed by one node is the abstraction of the cerebral activity in the corresponding neuronal population. We use a two-sided information representation dedicated to the representation of integrated cerebral information. It is made of a numerical value corresponding to the activation level, and a symbolic value representing the pattern of activated neurons. This work is a part of a project which is dedicated to the definition of an original causal approach for the modelling of cerebral information processing in large-scale networks and the interpretation of neuroimaging data. Causality allows us to express explicitly our hypotheses on cerebral mechanisms. Our contribution can be described in two points. In an artificial intelligence perspective, the use of labelled random variables in dynamic Bayesian networks allows us to define original non-supervised learning mechanisms. From the computational neuroscience viewpoint, we propose a new causal formalism, which is more adapted than formal neural networks to model cerebral processing at the global level of cerebral areas networks. Furthermore, our formalism is more biologically plausible than other causal approach like causal qualitative networks., La compréhension du fonctionnement cérébral passe par l'étude des relations entre les structures cérébrales et les fonctions cognitives qu'elles implémentent. Les études en activation, qui permettent d'obtenir, grâce aux techniques de neuroimagerie fonctionnelle, des données sur l'activité cérébrale pendant l'accomplissement d'une tâche cognitive, visent à étudier ces liens. Ces études, ainsi que de nombreux travaux chez l'animal, suggèrent que le support neurologique des fonctions cognitives est constitué de réseaux à grande échelle d'aires corticales et de régions sous-corticales interconnectées. Cependant, la mise en correspondance simple entre réseaux activés et tâche accomplie est insuffisante pour comprendre comment l'activation découle du traitement de l'information par le cerveau. De plus, le traitement cérébral est très complexe, et les mesures fournies par la neuroimagerie sont incomplètes, indirectes, et de natures différentes, ce qui complique grandement l'interprétation des données obtenues. Un outil de modélisation explicite des mécanismes de traitement et de propagation de l'information cérébrale dans les réseaux à grande échelle est nécessaire pour palier ces défauts et permettre l'interprétation des mesures de l'activité cérébrale en termes de traitement de l'information. Nous proposons ici un formalisme original répondant à ces objectifs et aux contraintes imposées par le système à modéliser, le cerveau. Il est basé sur une approche graphique causale et probabiliste, les réseaux bayésiens dynamiques, et sur une représentation duale de l'information. Nous considérons le cerveau comme un ensemble de régions fonctionnelles anatomiquement interconnectées, chaque région étant un centre de traitement de l'information qui peut être modélisé par un noeud du réseau bayésien. L'information manipulée dans le formalisme au niveau d'un noeud est l'abstraction du signal généré par l'activité de la population neuronale correspondante. Ceci nous conduit à représenter l'information cérébrale sous la forme d'un couple numérique/symbolique, permettant de tenir compte respectivement du niveau d'activation et de la configuration des neurones activés. Ce travail se situe dans le prolongement d'un projet visant à développer une approche causale originale pour la modélisation du traitement de l'information dans des réseaux cérébraux à grande échelle et l'interprétation des données de neuroimagerie. L'aspect causal permet d'exprimer explicitement des hypothèses sur le fonctionnement cérébral. Notre contribution est double. Au niveau de l'intelligence artificielle, l'utilisation de variables aléatoires labellisées dans des réseaux bayésiens dynamiques nous permet de définir des mécanismes d'apprentissage non-supervisés originaux. Sur le plan des neurosciences computationnelles, nous proposons un nouveau formalisme causal, plus adapté à la représentation du fonctionnement cérébral au niveau des réseaux d'aires que les réseaux de neurones formels, et présentant plus de plausibilité biologique que les autres approches causales, en particulier les réseaux causaux qualitatifs.

In the domain of neuroscience, activation studies use functional brain imaging techniques in order to provide measures of human brain activity during the performance of cognitive tasks. These studies highlight the fact that large-scale networks of cerebral areas are involved in the processing of specifics cognitive functions. On the one hand, the cerebral information processing complexity, and on the other, the incompleteness of the measurements, reduce the understanding of the links between the networked organisation and the realised cognitive function. These limitations arise the necessity of a formal modelling tool and computer simulation. Moreover, a clear understanding of the functional mechanisms can only be achieved through their explicit representation. From this viewpoint, we propose an original formalism based on causal graphs associated to a qualitative representation of the information. The causal graphs fulfil the need for a representation of the double organisation of the brain: structural et functional. We propose a hierarchical organisation of graphs, based on components. This organisation reduces the complexity and extends the reusability of the models. Moreover, we use a homogeneous formalism for the description of both structural and functional levels. To have an explicit representation of the cerebral information, we propose a qualitative abstraction of it, by a couple: (numeric interval, symbol). With this dual representation, we can deal with the magnitude and the category of the information, although the magnitude only can be observed with the different imaging tools. Based on this formalism, we propose the BIOCAEN simulator. At each sampling time, the simulation principle consists in the propagation of the influences through the causal graph. This mechanism allows to express the brain's automatic, stimulus-driven, processes, which are the source of the major part of the cerebral activity. In the field of the exploration of the human brain function, our contribution is to offer to the neuroscientists a formal tool for the expression of hypotheses on cerebral information propagation, at a high level of abstraction.. Furthermore, the BIOCAEN simulation of the models can give an validation of the expressed hypotheses by a confrontation of the simulation results and neuroimaging data., Des mesures de l'activité du cerveau humain peuvent être obtenues par diverses techniques d'imagerie neuro-fonctionnelle. Dans le domaine des neurosciences, les études menées grâce à ces nouvelles techniques sont appelées études d'activation. Elles mettent en évidence l'organisation en réseau des aires cérébrales mises en jeux lors de la réalisation de tâches cognitives particulières. La complexité du traitement de l'information cérébrale et l'incomplétude de l'observation rendent difficile l'interprétation de ce fonctionnement et rendent nécessaire la construction d'un outil de modélisation et de simulation. La nécessité de comprendre l'organisation fonctionnelle du cerveau humain, nous impose en plus de recourir à des formalismes permettant d'en avoir une représentation explicite. Dans cette optique, nous proposons un formalisme original, basé sur des graphes d'influences causales et une représentation qualitative de l'information. Les graphes d'influences sont tout à fait appropriés à la représentation de la double organisation du cerveau, en réseaux anatomiques (structurels) et fonctionnels. L'originalité de notre approche est double. D'une part, nous proposons une architecture hiérarchique fondée sur la notion de composant et qui permet de réduire la complexité des modèles tout en augmentant leur réutilisabilité. D'autre part, nous utilisons un formalisme unique pour décrire les niveaux structurels et fonctionnels cérébraux. La modélisation explicite de l'information cérébrale nous a conduit à proposer une représentation qualitative mixte, sous la forme de couples (intervalle, symbole). Ceci permet à la fois de prendre en compte l'amplitude de cette information, bruitée par les techniques d'imagerie, et sa catégorie. Nous proposons le simulateur BIOCAEN, fondé sur le formalisme ci-dessus. La simulation consiste en la propagation des influences à chaque instant d'une horloge discrète. Ce mécanisme permet de prendre en compte les processus automatiques qui constituent la majeure partie du fonctionnement cérébral. La contribution de notre travail à l'exploration du fonctionnement du cerveau humain réside dans la mise à disposition des chercheurs en neurosciences, d'un formalisme permettant d'exprimer explicitement, à un haut niveau d'abstraction, les hypothèses sur la propagation de l'information cérébrale et d'un simulateur permettant de les mettre en œuvre. Les hypothèses sont décrites dans des modèles où l'architecture causale offre un support à l'expression des réseaux anatomiques d'aires cérébrales, chacune d'entre elles étant représentée par un sous-réseau fonctionnel de processeurs d'information. La validation des hypothèses est réalisée par la confrontation des résultats de la simulation du modèle par BIOCAEN aux données de l'imagerie neuro-fonctionnelle.
