Abstract

Bonding characteristics of liquid boron at 2500K are studied by using high resolution Compton scattering. An excellent agreement is found between the measurements and the corresponding Car-Parinello molecular dynamics simulations. Covalent bond pairs are clearly shown to dominate in liquid boron along with the coexistence of diffuse pairs. Our study reveals the complex bonding pattern of liquid boron, and gives insight into the unusual properties of this high temperature liquid.

Abstract

Metallic liquid silicon at 1787K is investigated using x-ray Compton scattering. An excellent agreement is found between the measurements and the corresponding Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show persistence of covalent bonding in liquid silicon and provide support for the occurrence of theoretically predicted liquid-liquid phase transition in supercooled liquid states. The population of covalent bond pairs in liquid silicon is estimated to be 17% via a maximally-localized Wannier function analysis. Abstract

An electrostatic levitation (ESL) furnace was designed for the neutron diffraction study of condensed matter. This apparatus is composed of an electrostatic levitator, a neutron inlet path with Cd slit, a 160 deg window to detect scattered neutrons, a CO2 laser for sample heating, and an optical pyrometer for temperature measurements. A preliminary neutron diffraction experiment with this ESL was performed with polycrystalline alumina samples. The sample position could be controlled with an accuracy of +/- 0.1 mm. The observed Bragg peaks were in complete agreement with those derived from the lattice data of alumina obtained from the literature. 14. Density measurements of mould flux slags by electrostatic levitation method

Abstract

In the present work, the densities of a mould flux slag were measured as a function of temperature by electrostatic levitation (ESL) method. The density of a mould flux, as measured by ESL method decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The results obtained are compared with the value measured by the sessile drop method just above the melting point of the slag. The discrepancies are explained on the basis of the inherent merits and demerits of the two types of measurements. The experimental values of present work were also compared with the density data for other mould flux slags from Swedish plant practice, obtained by the sessile drop method as part of the present work as well as literature data. A thermodynamic model of molar volume, developed in the present group was used to predict the density of slags. The molar volume was described as a function of integral molar enthalpies of mixing. In the case of ternary systems corresponding to the mould flux slag, the calculated values are in reasonable agreement with the experimental values., QC 20100525

15. Value of direct catheter staining in the diagnosis of intravascular-catheter-related infection

Abstract

Ninety-nine intravascular catheters were evaluated by a semiquantitative culture and Gram and acridine orange direct stains. A diagnosis of catheter-related infection was determined by a retrospective review of clinical records. Compared with the culture method, direct examination of catheters lacked sensitivity. Surprisingly, for some patients, a positive stain for yeasts not recovered by culture was considered significant. The culture correlated with bacteremia but failed to predict infection in 42% of patients.
